Fangshan Stone, originated in the area of Beijing, is typical and unique to landscape making in Beijing, especially north western Beijing, where the site locates. Therefore, the changes of the utilization of Fangshan Stone could well represent the transition of the relationship between human being and the nature. The former could be devided into FOUR historical period according to ways of utilization, each responcing to a perticular stage of the latter featured by social productivity and view of nature. The site, right north to the Old Summer Palace, and once a component of the Royal Garden System in north western Beijing, tells the story about Fangshan Stone and historical vicissitudes because of its spacial characteristics. It is linear and filled with construction waste and weeds. In the design of the park, people will experience a sequence through the history responsing to this transition, with changing vegetation, pavement and processing of Fangshan Stone. A Story of Stone 2
Sections
The sections focus on the spacial sequence which aims to create a sense of going through the history. Four major open spaces appear alternatived with dense and closed woods, with some secondary open spaces in the interim. 3

Masterplan
The park is designed into a layered system, as a result intimately connected to the juxtposed park, which is currently under construction, as if they were integrated. In the meantime, visitors will experience a strong feeling of travelling through different layers when they enter the park at its north end, as they usually do. Ginkgo woods are specially arranged in order to imply the advent of the path of wastes which symbolizes the power of nature, while amazing roses appear at the end of each cession of the path of wastes as a prelude for a square of moment, the symbolization of labour power as well as the counterpart of a given historical period. Foodscape is a project located right outside the previous old beijing city wall, now known as the Second Ring Road of Beijing. The fresh food market, Xinmin Market, which locates in the site, serves the major source of fresh food for residents who lives in central Beijing. Thanks to its low price and freshness of food, the site has become the destination for old Beijinger to socialize with each other. Although young people usually avoids this place due to the noise and chaos of the environment, and absence of attractive activities, many of them turn to it in search of the sense of living when they feel upset and depressed. A number of young people take photos of lively views of old Beijingers to inspire their social groups to take an optimistic attitude for life. Inspired by the phenomena mentioned above, this project aims to create a multi-functional place that benefits both groups of the old and the young.
