Studio Projects


CRUISE TERMINAL COMPLEX | MUMBAI The Bachelors Thesis project involves An international transport complex comprising of a luxury hotel , a shopping mall and a cruise terminal. Manueline architecture was studied in depth and features of the same were used as design elements in the design.

LIBRARY COMPLEX | ANTWERP The scheme aims to understand the prevailing Colonial college in Belgium formerly under the university of Antwerp . Parametric techniques have been used in order to design the knitting pattern of the facade.

SKYSCRAPER | MUMBAI The project targets at Redefining the Skyline of Mumbai. Standing at 320m height , Twist aims to be the highest tower to be designed for Mumbai till date.

FACADE REDESIGN | DELFT The project involved deep scrutiny of an existing building’s facade in Delft to understand the climatic problems faced by the operators. The project primarily includes a redesign proposal for the same.


The Scallop Complex houses an International Cruise terminal , a luxury hotel and a shopping complex. Inspired from a Scallop Shell , meticulous reading and research was done on Manueline architecture. Elements of the sea were studied in depth and the design is inspired from the waves and the shells of the ocean.

The terminal is split over three levels and 2 mezzanines. Each floor is split into two - the departures and arrival. Each section of passengers ( economy , business and first class ) embark and disembark from each floor respectively. The final floor houses the control room.

Antwerp Library Complex “Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.� - Walter Croknite Pixel is a state of the art library proposed at campus middelheim , Antwerp as a redesign to the underused , present colonial college. Startlingly the campus at middelheim houses a very tiny library compared to its counterparts in and around Antwerp. The prevailing building is a to-be hundred year old edifice which is currently a make shift office and a storage space. Pixel is inspired from a simple arc, yes it is as simple as it sounds ! A curve was sketched on paper and the project was developed from it. The curve is parallel to the existing road and this curve was translated into a facade so that the passer-by get a sense of movement and dynamism in the structure when they speed past this edifice . The facade is designed with an interlocking pattern creating a set of quadrangles at a perspective. This is fitted with smart glass ( The glass at a flick of a switch can turn from opaque to transparent). Hence the pixel has a new facade every single day.

A concept of surprise was added to the curve , a path is derived. The building is a story by itself , a person goes from the beginning through to the end. Just like how the route of a novel is defined , the path which the user takes while using this building was defined. The concept and the story together is used to derive the frame of the building. The finishing touch was added by tapering the building on the z axis making all the walls of the building sloping outwards. A concept of surprise was added to

Technological advances allow for the construction of super-tall buildings. However the design element is important too to ensure that the vertical neighborhood allows people to live, work and enjoy leisure activities in convenience. The brief required the construction of. An iconic mixed-use, high rise development in the outskirts of Chennai. The Objective- to create a dynamic urban community and evolve cohesion of the social activities

The tower stands at a height of 320m with the spire literally piercing the clouds. The skyscraper houses almost 500 units of residential accommodation along with a million square feet of retail and office spaces .

Undulate 2.0 – A facade redesign of the EWI building , Delft , The Netherlands provides solutions for many concerns in the buildings such as insulation problems and circulation of air. In addition to this production of wind energy using blade-less wind mills is incorporated in the design. Existing problems in the building can be attributed to the single layer of glass that separates the outside from the inside. The ewicon is a very interesting pre-fab element designed by an architect (meccanoo architects). The ewicon could be the future of wind energy technology. Another interesting element in the design is the multi layered pipes which heat up the air by conduction. The fans that are used to suck the fresh air inside and the used air outside is powered by the EWICON. Undulated surfaces on the proposed facade helps in tunneling the wind into the ewicon.

The curved facade on the out side is the spine behind the concept of the redesign. Hence The choice of choosing a curved glass section or choosing multiple straight sections at an angle were the options on table. Choosing a curved section for the glass had many setbacks such as economic reasons ,transportability and size of the sections. Another problem which surfaced with the curvilinear sections were that there was a requirement according to the design that the panels should be partially openable to bring in fresh air during summer for circulation.

Hence the choice of using prefabricated same sized panels aligned at different angles to create the curve was investigated deeper. Mullions of 50mm square sections are used on both the facades. Aluminium was chosen over steel for many reasons such as weight , rusting and fabrication. A Heated floor plate as shown in fig 5.6 has been used in the box facades so as to heat up the up rising air. This structure is stroked with concrete on the outside and is perforated by nature.

A prefabricated double glass facade has been incorporated in the design for extra insulation. The prefabricated element has two layers of 12 mm toughened glass . An inert gas is filled in between the glass pieces so as to increase the insulating capabilities by leaps and bounds. There is also a desiccant placed at the joinery so as to absorb the moisture created during

frost. The Ewicon proposed to be placed would weigh in and around hundred kilograms each. This would be riveted on to the cantilevered floor plate. The inner facade is also replaced with a double glazing prefabricated unit. The exposed part of the cantilevered facade has been amply insulated so that during the worst of winters , there is no cold which enters the building through conduction.

OFFICE | KOLKATTA A dedication to the ‘wheel barrow’ , a lowly creation without which many of the marvels would have remained on the drawing boards of architects.

Residential Complex | India A glass intensive residential complex in the heart of south India to promote usage of different types of glass produced by SAINT GOBAIN .Mimicking the building style of a bee-hive , Amorpha stands tall in the skyline of a growing city.

Like a maze that leads back to the beginning , a formless hate that envelops mankind and forces him to take weapons on his brothers The Klein is an example of a non-orientable surface; informally, it is a surface in which notions of left and right cannot be consistently defined. Other related non-orientable objects include the Möbius strip and the real projective plane. Whereas a Möbius strip is a surface with boundary, a Klein has no boundary (for comparison, a sphere is an orientable surface with no boundary).

THE WORLD INSIDE Klein houses a miniature model of the structure made of reflective stainless steel in the inner most ring. A peace memorial by function , Klein aims to be one of its kind portraying a new world all together inside the concrete edifice. Located in a bustling street , Klein offers a totally peaceful environment for the users.

Frozen in movement , An edifice in steel and glass The objective of the design was to create a steel intensive office complex of 5 floors. The secondary objective was to create an iconic design to stand out in the skyline of a city. The interior was designed to be a column free floor plate to enhance working area. It can be stated with little doubt that the wheel barrow has contributed as much as the best equipment used in building the greatest monuments of the world. Inspired from the wheel-barrow , the form aims to be unique and interesting. NATIONAL LEVEL COMPETITION 1ST PLACE NOVEMBER 2012

414 tonnes of steel would go into making this iconic office complex. Inspired and named after the lowly wheel barrow but for which most of the architects plans would have remained unbuilt.

The barrows stands tall in the banks of the river ‘hoogly’in kolkatta.The water front location influenced the design with addition of elements of manueline architecture.

Should a building look the same from any point of view? To the tenant entering for the first time and standing at the gate, to a viewer from a speeding car, from the circular windows of landing planes , and perhaps to a satellite view on Google earth. Do they all have to see the matching spectacle. “Architecture can’t fully represent the chaos and turmoil that are part of the human personality, but you need to put some of that turmoil into the architecture, or it isn’t real.” NATIONAL LEVEL JURY COMMENDATION

THE BEEHIVE is Nature’s finest example of chaos and order appearing together. The construction of the beehive is one of the most exquisite and unique work of art. In the midst of the chaos, the bees are able to bring about an order and elegance to their hectic lifestyle and existence. In short, AMORPHA is the celebration of functionality in a seemingly dysfunctional environment.

AMORPHA has an external frame work of anodised steel. There exists a gap between the frame and the glass covering the structure. To a visitor This design gives a vastly different visual experience to people from different positions. An asset which many condominiums cannot offer. To a resident AMORPHA promises a generous and spectacular view of either the poolside or the lake, from all the apartments. At AMORPHA, life is more than living the dream. Infact, life itself, is completely redefined.

Over the centuries man developed and consequently learnt to develop the materials available in the world around him to his advantage. This progression in the history of mankind can be seen through The Stone age, the Bronze age, the Iron age. The history of creating glass can be traced back to 3500 BC in Mesopotamia. But of late, glass has been redefined visually and substantially with the aid of technology. There is glass that can stop a bullet, there is glass that can allow men to stand right over the Grand Canyon, there is glass that can change from opaque to clear in seconds, a glass that allows the penetration of light, but no heat. Different types of glass can be used for floors walls roofs balconies etc. Glass has become an architect’s delight in saving space, money, or energy. Significant use of glass in the design of AMORPHA makes it the ideal place to live. With AMORPHA, we have recreated the class and elegance of a luxury hotel in a residential tower.

The practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle is important in design. The AMORPHA has been designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on the natural environment. The buildings are with specialty glasses to reduce thermal impact of the sun while maintaining daylighting. On-site generation of renewable energy through solar power is an important feature. The roof area of 24,000 square feet is stacked with photo-voltaic arrays producing power. Photo-voltaic panels using ‘SGG ALBARINO’ extra-clear patterned glass are fitted on several surfaces. The power of the sun is harnessed to heat water for the bathrooms and kitchens using evacuated glass tube collectors. In addition Grey water from the toilets are used for lawns. Composting units recycle organic wastes from kitchens. Local trees are planted to absorb the carbon-Di-oxide generated by activities.

VERTICAL CITIES Mumbai ASIA Every year a one square kilometer territory will be the subject of the competition. This area, to house 100,000 people living and working, sets the stage for tremendous research and investigation into urban density, verticality, domesticity, work, food, infrastructure, nature, ecology, structure, and program - their holistic integration and the quest for visionary paradigm will be the challenges of this urban and architectural invention. This new environment will have a full slate of live-work-play provisions, with the residential component making up to 50% of the total floor space. In the fourth of this series of competitions, the competition site will be located in Mumbai, India with the theme “Everyone Connects�. INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION 2ND PRIZE JULY 2014
