In 2002, her mother-in-law suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed. Kim and Patrick Nguyen relocated their family to Texas to care for his ailing mother. Patrick became primary caretaker for his elderly parent while Kim worked in a Denton nail salon for a year before the couple discovered a vacant space (“…very small and cozy…”) they could lease. here’s a bumper sticker popular among Texans transplanted from other places that reads, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as quickly as I could.”

That could be the slogan of Kim Nguyen. She and her husband Patrick own Bella Nail Salon and Spa, with locations in Denton and Flower Mound. They have won the Best of Denton County Award for Best Nail Salon 4 years in a row . Kim Nguyen was born in Vietnam and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she studied cosmetology and became a hair stylist in the midnineties. She won multiple awards for creativity and styling and her career may have continued on this path if not for fate.

She credits the encouragement and support of her loyal clients with giving her the courage to move forward and open a nail salon. It was a bold step for the Nguyens, who worked seven days a week in the beginning—taking their children with them—to make the salon successful. “We were nervous, scared and worried about how we would pay for everything,” she explains. “There were days we sat for many hours waiting for someone to come in.”

for the benefit of her clients. The goal to satisfy clients and earn their trust is what drives her. “I enjoy finding answers, styles, solutions and designs to share with my clients. To see them happy— that’s what makes me happy,” she says. Her generosity of spirit extends to the Bella staff. She considers them part of her extended family and says she feels blessed to have them working with her as a team. A thriving business means a seven-day-a-week work schedule is no longer necessary for the Nguyens, who now take off Sundays and Mondays. This is when they spend time together with their three children, Christian, Vincent and Grace. “On Sunday morning we go to church together, and after church we do fun things together as a family,” says Kim.

The petite Nguyen engendered such loyalty among her clients that their word-of-mouth praise for her talent brought in new customers. Gradually, the salon grew and became an established Denton business. The Flower Mound salon was opened in 2009. By 2012, they had outgrown the original "small and cozy" space in Denton and relocated that salon to its current, more spacious quarters.

Nguyen also spends time doing volunteer work at her children’s school. Love of children is a constant in her life and doing what she can to help kids in need is also one of her passions.

The success of Bella salons can be largely attributed to Kim Nguyen’s love for her work and the way she keeps up with trends in the beauty industry

“Not one day goes by that I don’t thank God for blessing me with a beautiful first family and also my second family—my staff and my awesome clients.”

Kim Nguyen feels honored by the Best of Denton County award and shares the credit with her husband Patrick and their family, as well as the staff and clients she calls her “second family.”

hen Shauna McCabe and Kendra Schmidt started doing hair 8 years ago, Salon Sage seemed like a pipe dream to them. But the two women, who have been friends for over 10 years, turned their passion for making women feel special and beautiful into an awardwinning salon. Shauna and Kendra combine their love for their craft and their love for helping others to offer salon services that truly satisfy customers. Salon Sage recently won Best of Denton County, which can be attributed in part to their commitment to continuous learning. Staying up to date on current trends and fashion helps them give their clients what they want—-fun and beautiful hair!

The enjoyment hair styling brings them is also key to their success. Shauna and Kendra explain, “Going to work doesn’t feel like work and you truly love what you do and you get to do it with your best friends every day while making new ones with all our clients. Why would you ever give that up?” A clear source of strength in the business model is the faith and friendship Shauna and Kendra share. They are longtime friends who embarked on this journey together, they attend the same church, and they volunteer together. “God’s timing brought us here,” they explain. “We truly feel like it’s a miracle-a gift that we’ve gotten here.” Something that makes Salon Sage special is the welcoming, laid back approach the women take. Their relaxed attitude and sincere desire to help each customer feel their best creates a

Beauty comfortable environment anyone can enjoy. It is no wonder they are considered the best in Denton County.

"The enjoyment hair styling brings them is also key to their success." When Shauna and Kendra are not at the salon working hard to help their customers feel beautiful and special, they are spending time with their husbands and children and staying active in their church. While Kendra grew up right here in DFW, Shauna is from Tennessee. She has quickly adopted DFW as her home through simply saying “Texas is better!” Ultimately, Salon Sage is their dream come true. It is the place where they have the privilege to help women feel important, confident and beautiful!

What About

The Wright Firm

I

t has been a decade since identical twin brothers Patrick and Paul Wright combined their talents to establish a law firm that has recently been voted the Best Law Firm in Denton County.

The firm has built a commendable reputation as the Texan brothers – identical in birth date only – have expanded their legal practice to provide representation for North Texas clients in Denton, Dallas, Tarrant and Collin counties. The partners and their associates and staff offer a broad spectrum of business, family, probate, bankruptcy, estate planning, tax and criminal law services. The Wright brothers are ready to tackle almost any legal issue, and they reflect their Texas heritage in their dedication to their profession. Early in his career, Patrick served as the City Attorney for both the cities of Krum and Hackberry, Texas, and as City Prosecutor in Corinth, Texas in addition to maintaining an active family law caseload. Patrick earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at the University of North Texas and his law degree from South Texas College of Law. Paul chose a career in accounting in the beginning, graduating at the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Master of Science in Taxation, before working in the tax department at BDO Seidman. Paul then also attended South Texas College of Law to earn his law degree. While at South Texas, Paul served as Assistant Editor of the South Texas Law Review and is published in the area of tax law. Paul is also a Certified Public Accountant and practiced in public accounting representing business, fiduciary and individual

clients with tax planning and compliance issues before entering law and ultimately establishing The Wright Firm, LLP in Dallas in 2002. Patrick joined The Wright Firm, LLP in 2003, and the brothers became partners. Patrick and Paul owe a large part of their success to the guidance of their parents who were supportive of their respective individual goals and who urged the young men to be active in their communities, to work earnestly without regard for personal shortcomings, and to be outspoken about the things that matter. Attending Jesuit College Preparatory School in Dallas, the Wright brothers credit the Jesuit principles and superior educational environment for much of their success, too. Both men are also hugely grateful to supportive wives and families who understand the passion the twins have for their profession, their business, and the work that keeps them away from home some nights. Each of the founding partners have their particular strengths. Patrick is a board certified family law specialist who loves the excitement of the courtroom and in honing his skills as a trial lawyer both in family law and personal injury. Patrick has recently been accepted to the Million and Multi-million Dollar Advocate Forum which is one of the most prestigious groups of trial lawyers in the United States. Fewer than 1% of U.S. lawyers are members of this forum. Paul is focused on estate planning, probate and tax law and he also applies his talents at fiduciary and probate litigation. Both Paul and Patrick have been named SuperLawyers by their peers. Like all good SuperLawyers, Patrick and Paul have assembled an extraordinary team of attorneys and staff who each have unique specialties that allow them to serve their clients and the community.

of their priorities. The men share as much time as possible with their families, but both are dedicated to provide their clients with whatever it takes to achieve the best possible outcome in any legal situation. One of Patrick’s clients described his courtroom demeanor as “shocking and awesome”. Likewise Paul’s clients describe his knowledge of both establishing complex tax and estate planning structures as well as deconstructing them as in a divorce situation as nothing short of being a “legal brain surgeon.” It should also be noted that both men are voracious readers. Paul and Patrick are a force to be reckoned with in their respective areas of expertise, and they intend to keep working hard for their clients, and staying on top of all pertinent legal issues to maintain their leading position among North Texas legal firms. They have garnered personal rewards of excellence as judged by their peers, but their outlook is to continue advocating for their clients first and foremost while providing them with superior legal service. The challenges of ever more complex laws and regulations ensure that the public will have to rely on qualified legal representation even more in the future. The Wrights are ready for that inevitability and they invite anyone seeking legal representation to visit their website at www.thewrightlawyers.com to discover more about the firm and their services.

Patrick and his wife Sheri have two children whose sporting events occupy their weekends. Paul and his wife Rachel have three children who are also active in a wide range of sports. Both men put their role as a husband and father at the top

"...Patrick’s clients described his courtroom demeanor as 'shocking and awesome'."

Best Animal Non Profit www.TexasForThem.org 940-566-5551

“The answer to stopping euthanasia and overpopulation starts with prevention” says TCAP Executive Director, Stacey Schumacher. The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) has been a leader in animal welfare since its formation in 2002. TCAP provides compassionate solutions to pet overpopulation and euthanasia. As a Dentonbased non-profit, TCAP provides the lowest prices for preventative animal care throughout North Texas. In 2007, the Humane Society of the United States named TCAP as the "Most innovative approach to animal welfare in the nation."

“The staff was very friendly and professional. The whole process was quick and simple. I will continue to use Texas Coalition for Animal Protection for my vet pet needs.” – Jessica O. TCAP's skilled and caring veterinary team has spayed/neutered more than 171,600 North Texas animals and has vaccinated more than 259,500 animals against the deadly rabies virus. TCAP's ultimate goal is to substantially reduce animal overpopulation and euthanasia throughout North Texas, while promoting animal welfare. Spaying and neutering pets is the most effective

way to reduce animal overpopulation and many problems that result from overpopulation such as malnutrition, abandonment, high euthanasia rates, and neglect. TCAP currently operates standalone clinics in Denton, Fort Worth, and Burleson, but chances are that TCAP is never far from your home with one of their travel “MASH”-style clinics. “We understand that people have jobs and cannot always make the drive to one of our main clinics, so we make ourselves available throughout DFW at local animal shelters and community centers,” says Schumacher.

TCAP 713 Sunset St Denton, TX High Quality & Affordable Spay & Neutering Services

In addition to providing an invaluable service to pet owners, the Texas Coalition for Animal Protection strives to provide its support to animal shelters and rescue organizations. “We truly value these institutions for their contribution to their communities. We want to be there to help make their rescued animals more adoptable and improve the number of animals they can help as a result” says Schumacher. TCAP’s Executive Director goes on to state that the combination of reducing animal overpopulation and increasing adoption rates can actually lower the cost of cityfunded programs and in-turn lower the cost to North Texas taxpayers.

If you have a pet that you would like to get sterilized, scheduling an appointment is easy. You can call TCAP at 940-566-5551 or visit their website at www.texasforthem.org and click “Request Appointment”. Prices for sterilization begin as low as $35. Annual vaccinations for a dog or cat can be purchased for $25 on a walk-in basis from 9 am – noon at all three main TCAP locations and 10 am – noon at all travel locations. North Texans can learn more by visiting TCAP’s website at www.texasforthem.org.

Have your Kids get

Taught by Pros W

hen Cory Legner walked in to D-BAT Lewisville to help his son harness his baseball skills, he didn’t realize the wholesale change that would take place in his life.

Cory was offered the chance to partner with Mike McGowan and make his love of baseball and helping young adults a full time career. And now that he’s doing it, he’ll never be the same. In an interview with Cory, co-owner of D-BAT Lewisville, he shares with us his inspiration for joining the facility and how his background has enlightened their mission to hone the talent and love of baseball and softball in the young adults under their tutelage. D-BAT Lewisville is the culmination of Cory’s passion when it comes to baseball. Whether he was playing or coaching others, Cory has always had a hand in the sport. You would think that being part owner of D-BAT Lewisville would fulfill that desire to engage and share his love of baseball, but it hasn’t. Even in his free time, he says, you can often find him at the ballpark with his “wife Jen and [their] two boys enjoying the opportunity to see them play and enjoy the same game [he] did when 26 | Best of Denton County | 2013 |

[he] was their age.” Now with D-BAT Lewisville he gets to impart his wisdom and love of the game to other kids as well. At D-BAT Lewisville, Cory tells us he has teamed up with his partner to provide “an atmosphere for boys and girls to learn the fundamentals of baseball and softball.” “Seeing [his customers] grow as athletes and young adults and the successes they achieve” is one of the most exciting parts of what he does. Their business would not be able to provide these achievements without D-BAT Lewisville’s instructors who, Cory says “recognize that each customer is unique and they tailor their instruction to those needs.” Giving “clients the skills to be successful at any level” is D-BAT’s ultimate goal. From his own words Cory makes it clear that he has found his niche in the atmosphere he and his partner have created at D-BAT Lewisville. There he and his exceptional instructors are able to develop the skills of the younger generation and relish in their achievements. Sharing in the successes of the young adults that come into their facility on a daily basis is one of the great joys of being an owner in this business. “Knowing what we are in business to do and the impact our instructors have on our client’s enjoyment and respect for the game, I’m

certain I could never fully give that up,” he says. And while Cory is humble about the lasting impression D-BAT Lewisville has made for itself, he hopes “people think of [us] as a business that instilled the respect and enjoyment for the game. That same respect and enjoyment that we all had as young aspiring ball player[s]. Hopefully we’ve had a part in continuing to pass that on to future generations.”

From Sole to Soul

Physical Therapy

& Wellness M

eredith Tittle has come full circle on a journey that just delights her.

Meredith is the owner and operator of S2S Functional Performance, a physical therapy and functional performance training center. While Meredith found inspiration from many sources, she is happy to bring her experience and training to the area she originated from, Denton County. As Meredith states, "What a blessing to come home!" Meredith follows in her mother's footsteps as a physical therapy expert, and she benefited from her mentoring. Meredith has been an active athlete since childhood and from an early age knew that she wanted to apply her athletic gifts, intelligence, creative mind and education for the benefit of others. While she considered a career as a physician and took courses at Baylor to prepare for medical school, eventually she opted for physical therapy school to make the most of her skills and attributes. While completing her Master's in Physical Therapy from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center , she plunged into Pilates with enthusiasm. Interestingly, Pilates had not reached the level of popularity that it enjoys today, and Meredith used the program to describe an example

www.BestofDentonCounty.com

of an alternative therapy to complete an assignment in school. Since then, pilates research has abounded and the method is introduced now as customary in most PT school curriculum. After becoming a licensed PT, Meredith completed her Pilates certification through Stott Pilates. This method uses a contemporary adaptation that focuses on maintaining the natural curvature of the spine. She taught Pilates classes in a PT clinic while she prepared to launch her own studio. She opened her own clinic in The Bartonville Town Center in 2004 with the dedication to help each client achieve and exceed his or her fitness goals. "We have worked with professional athletes, students, moms, business men, retired grandmas, infants and weekend warriors. We have enabled them to reach beyond their goals. Meaning restored for them a quality of life that enables them to feel good and do more," states Meredith. Meredith puts her passion for fitness and rehabilitation into S2S Functional Performance. The clinic offers a selection of packages designed to help anyone achieve his or her fitness goal. The goal can be participating in sports, wrestling with the kids, or relief from hours at a desk job. In addition, the clinic offers an "on the road" workout package for those who travel extensively and may miss time at the studio. What is functional performance? Meredith explains, "Functional performance is training that simulates the activities an individual performs on a daily basis. For example, weight lifting can put excess stress on your

joints. Functional training will prepare you to meet the demands of activities that require core stability, balance and proprioception. It is functional because they are performed dynamically in several planes of motion, preparing our brains and musculoskeletal system to respond efficiently every day and to feel good doing them. We have developed our own method of S2S Hard Core, TRX Suspension Training and Stott Pilates. "All three are safe, fast and metabolic. More information can be found on the S2S website. S2S started as Sole to Soul, A Professional Pilates Studio. Sole to Soul defines Meredith's view of life and work. She supports programs that assist those in need such as Naomi's Village and Children's Advocacy Center. Whether it is working or playing, Meredith Tittle believes in giving life all she has!

Jesse James Fit 1001 Cross Timbers Rd. | Suite 1200 Flower Mound, TX (972) 355-2639 | www.JesseJamesFit.com As someone who has been in the fitness industry for close to two decades, Jesse James has a thorough understanding of what it takes to help individuals take control of their health and wellbeing. Growing up in Los Angeles opened up a lot of doors for Jesse, but the passion for building a career in health began when moving to Texas more than 20 years ago. At that point, Jesse started a new life and began pursuing those things that one can only dream about. Jesse believes in making a difference in the lives of others, which is why he works so hard at everything he does. Regardless of whether he has to work 14 hours per day or only a few, he takes pride in seeing the faces of his clients and coworkers. It really is all about making a difference to all those who are looking to improve their health. People need to be driven to succeed and we are dedicated to helping them reach their goals. The staff that you will find at Jesse James Fit is exceptional. Everyone is here to work with you and make sure that you receive the satisfaction you deserve. You won’t find a team that is more dedicated to helping you get where you want to be than the ones right here. After owning gyms for a number of years, Jesse decided he needed to make a change in the manner in which training was handled for individuals around the area. Over the past

The Personal Approach to

Your Health

10 to 12 years, Jesse had a number of different clients that needed his help. However, the dues for gyms were troubling and larger gyms didn’t provide the environment that he wanted for all of his clients. He desired an accepting, inviting place where people were able to work together and achieve their goals, regardless of what they might be. A personal approach to training was the key to success.

"You won't find a team that is more dedicated to helping you get where you want to be." Jesse is well-known for the quality of service that he provides, as well as his consistency. Even though the world of fitness might be changing all the time, that doesn’t mean it has to be that way for everyone. Jumping into a fad diet or extreme exercise regime isn’t always the best choice. Bringing people to a workout that is ideal for their specific needs is where it all begins. You should never have to settle for less than what you deserve. Overcoming obstacles that stand in the way will help you become the person you want to be. Many people have some type of issue underneath that makes it difficult to achieve their fitness goals and they don’t always realize it until such time as someone else draws attention to it.

Beyond working with individuals, Jesse also works with families to bring the whole group together. Grandparents work out with their grandchildren and create an amazing dynamic that many people don’t realize is possible. Once you find your grandparent lifting more weight than what you do, you will quickly become motivated to get your levels at more than your counterparts. Even though weight loss might be a specialty here, a large number of individuals have come to Jesse for help. Jesse has contributed to the success and scholarships of many professional athletes and high school athletes, as well as building selfesteem and confidence in clients. His goal is to fill in the gaps and complete the lives of those who come into his establishment. Providing you with support and encouragement is where it’s at with Jesse James Fit. Seeing the hard work pay off for all of those who come into the establishment is what drives Jesse to continue working with people around the region. The joy comes in being able to help others who need assistance in getting and staying fit and healthy. Family is important to Jesse, which is why he spends time with them on the weekend sharing stories and previous time together. Spending time driving around in the Jeep and viewing everything in the world around him is where Jesse spends his time away from work with his loved ones. Beyond training others, he trains himself as well. He believes in practising what he teaches others to do. As the winner of the Best Personal Trainer and the Best Weightloss Center, as well as Best Boss Ever, Jesse understands what it takes to succeed. Unleash your inner potential with one of the bests in the industry today. 2013 | Best of Denton County | 31

Improving Your Life with

Pilates O

ver the past two years, Michelle Lawyer has developed a reputation throughout the Denton community as a top-notch Pilates instructor. What many don’t know is that before she joined the staff at Strada Fitness & Wellness Center in Flower Mound, Michelle was a professional dancer. She credits her 20-plus years as a dancer – highlighted by a four-year stint in the Corps de Ballet with the Texas Ballet Theater in Fort Worth – for developing her passion for fitness, and for helping her clients overcome, and prevent, injuries. Michelle excels in finding solutions for her clients from postural imbalance to functional movements. Some of her clients develop accompanying depression because of their physical limitations. The positive attitude and energy she provides is a welcome respite for these individuals; and she has a well-established, repeat clientele as a result. Many of Michelle’s clients come in for exercise or relief from joint pain in the knees or shoulders. The STOTT Pilates-trained instructor works closely with them to strengthen their bodies and create muscle

www.BestofDentonCounty.com

balance in a gentle way that leads to lasting pain relief. Many of her clients claim that her programs lighten them emotionally while providing physical benefits. Frequently, they tell Michelle that their Pilates workouts have given them a more positive outlook on life, along with additional energy. “I’m a sponge for knowledge,” she states. “I am constantly learning, training and progressing.” Michelle recently introduced the Total Barre™ Program to the line-up of services now offered at Strada Fitness. This individualized training uses elements from Pilates, dance and ballet to improve flexibility, posture, strength and fitness. “I researched all the programs I could find before settling on the Total Barre approach, which I think is the best of them all,” she said. “It combines everything I’ve loved doing my entire life while providing a fun way to get fit and to sculpt the beautiful, lean body most women want.” Michelle’s passion for helping people and improving the quality of their lives reaches beyond the gym. She recently established the Pink Ribbon program in the Flower Mound area. The program is a Pilates-based exercise method designed specifically for breast cancer survivors. This cuttingedge system improves the quality of life of these individuals by targeting the muscles most

affected by the surgeries required to address the cancer. “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement,” is Michelle’s favorite quote. When she is not at Strada Fitness working with her clients, Michelle enjoys working out and being with friends and family. The Flower Mound native and Marcus High School alumnus graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Texas.

Paula Kratohvil

From Her Heart

To Your Home P

aula Kratohvil comes from a long line of business professionals all the way back to her grandmother who worked as a tailor for many years.

It is this kind of background that set her up to run her own business: Complete Interior Solutions. She has long been a believer in the value of hard work and it is this kind of attitude that makes most of her customers the repeat kind. In fact, most state that she makes the process quite easy for them. As anybody who is successful in running their own firm knows, there is value in establishing a good name in the community. Paula has been a member of this area for more than 26 years, which has allowed her to build up a number of relationships with different families. She has even worked through the cycle of life for many people. The most gratifying part of this entire process has been to watch the growth and development of the people that have continued to patronize her store. It is at this point in her life that Paula enjoys the teaching aspect the most. The next generation of leaders needs a good mentor and she has stepped up to fulfill that role admirably. Ms. Kratohvil has long since known about the value of relationships and their ability to foster a good working environment. Besides the aforementioned business, Paula has also been quite active in the community, garnering a number of awards and commendations, including Rotarian Citizen of the year and Ambassador of the year among others. She is probably the most proud of these accomplishments since they show

that others value her efforts in the public eye. This is a direct result of her upbringing in the mountains of Alabama, a place that she calls “the most beautiful place in the world.” Outside of her business interests, Ms. Kratohvil has a number of interesting hobbies including watching football – especially the Cowboys and going out with her Razor in the mud. She has stated that some people might find that particular fact quite surprising.

"...most gratifying part of this entire process has been to watch the growth and development of the people that have continued to patronize her store." For more than 35 years, Paula has enjoyed running this type of business. She has a stated goal of making the most of each and every day. Being a people person takes a lot of energy, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. This extends to her family time and the nonprofits in the community. Her legacy will be as one who made a difference.

M

uch has changed since Orthopedic Associates started serving our community over 35 years ago.

Founded in 1976 by 2 orthopedic surgeons, Orthopedic Associates has grown to nine boardcertified physicians providing comprehensive orthopedic care. With expertise spanning the full spectrum of orthopedic subspecialties and pain management, they were voted Best of Denton County in Orthopedics for the fourth year in a row. With an impressive new office at 5000 Long Prairie Road in Flower Mound, Orthopedic Associates offers orthopedic care for sportsrelated injuries, fractures, arthritis, spinal disorders, and other musculoskeletal injuries and conditions in patients ranging in age from infants to seniors. Additionally, they provide non-surgical orthopedic care, including pain management and electrodiagnostic medicine. The office building also houses specialized physical therapy and advanced technologies including high-definition digital imaging and open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To round out the full-breadth of orthopedic care for their patients in a single location, Orthopedic Associates, in partnership with Texas Health Resources and Surgical Care Affiliates, recently opened the Texas Health Orthopedic Surgery Center (THOSC), a fullservice orthopedic outpatient surgical center. THOSC is the first surgery center established in Flower Mound , and it is specifically designed around the care of the orthopedic patient. “We are proud to have partnered with Orthopedic Associates for this state-of-theart, 15,000-square-foot orthopedic outpatient

surgical center in Flower Mound,” said Jenny Bloebaum, THOSC administrator. “From the expansive size of the four well-equipped operating rooms to the specially-selected surgical teams with extensive orthopedic expertise, the center is geared to meeting the unique needs of the orthopedic patient. The facility provides full outpatient surgical services, including minimally invasive and arthroscopic procedures utilizing the latest cutting-edge equipment. The OA physicians — along with our dedicated team of registered nurses, certified surgical technologists, and board-certified anesthesiologists — work together to provide outstanding patient care.” One thing that hasn’t changed is Orthopedic Associates’ commitment to providing quality orthopedic care to the community. The OA physicians — Dr. Santhya Bhandari, Dr. Jeffery Cantrell, Dr. Danny Corbitt, Dr. Kent Dickson, Dr. J. David Evanich, Dr. Brady Giesler, Dr. James Heerwagen, Dr. Manuj Singhal, and Dr. Michael Willenborg — have deep ties to the area. Orthopedic Associates sponsors high school sports programs, local youth sports teams, and many area charities. In addition to helping patients in the office, you will likely see the doctors on the sidelines of local games. They serve as team physicians for Lewisville, Flower Mound, Marcus, Argyle, The Colony, Lake Dallas, and Liberty Christian high schools, as well as help provide coverage for the University of North Texas and Texas Women's University. “In addition to thanking everyone for voting for us again this year for Best of Denton County, we would like to thank the community for all of their support. In October, we had an external electrical issue that has temporarily

It is just one more reason we are proud to be a part of this community.” written by: Meghan Evanich

Where Smiles are

a Specialty D

r. Pomerance’s specialty, in and out of the office, is smiles. As a successful Denton dentist, Dr. Pomerance is committed to improving his patients’ lives by saving their teeth and creating attractive smiles. “I am most passionate about helping patients who have given up on their dental health and think nothing can be done except to remove their teeth,” he said. “It is gratifying to witness the dramatic difference a healthy dentition and a beautiful smile make on someone's outlook.” Dr. Pomerance has also touched the lives of many people through his efforts on behalf of animal welfare and involvement in the Kiwanis Club’s Children’s Clinic in Denton. The Clinic provides free medical and dental care and prescriptions for children who don’t otherwise qualify for assistance. Dr. Pomerance, a member of the Denton Kiwanis Noon Club since he moved to the city, has been Clinic Chairman for 18 years. “I am proud to be part of an organization of citizens, business people and professionals who care so much about Denton and its children,” he said. In addition to personally treating children in his office referred to him by the Clinic, he volunteers for the many fundraisers that support the clinic. His passion for animal welfare comes naturally, as evidenced by his love for his rescue puppies. Championing the needs of creatures who can't speak for themselves, Dr. Pomerance works tirelessly to promote dog and cat adoption, and, whenever possible, he enjoys melding his interests in dentistry and animal rescue. In recognition of these important contributions to the community, Kiwanis International bestowed on Dr. Pomerance the Hickson Award, its highest honor.

Dr. Pomerance grew up in Detroit, Mich., and is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he completed his undergraduate and dental studies. “While I was in school, I often worked with my dad, a pharmacist, but I realized I wanted to do something different,” Dr. Pomerance explained. “I liked working with my hands, enjoyed working with people on a one-to-one basis and excelled in science, so my interest turned to dentistry.” Dr. Pomerance’s record of academic excellence at the University of Michigan (ranking fifth in a class of 150) earned him a prestigious general practice residency at a New York hospital. Out of 800 applicants, only five dentists, including him, were selected. Dr. Pomerance worked in New York City after his residency, and then relocated to Los Angeles in 1980. He was in practice there for 15 years. About 20 years ago, friends in Texas invited him to visit, and that’s when he discovered Denton. “I loved it,” he recalls. “I actually packed up and moved within weeks to begin my new life here in 1995.”

"He and his staff of caring employees strive to make patients feel at ease." Dr. Pomerance said he came to Denton because he wanted to live and work in a smaller town environment with colleges close by that mirrored his own educational experiences. Dr. Pomerance, who described Denton as “just what a city should be,” is impressed by the community’s appreciation for the arts and admirable support of organizations that take care of its citizens. Dr. Pomerance, who has been a dentist since 1977, attributes his success to his commitment to lifelong learning. He and his staff of caring

employees strive to make patients feel at ease. “Over the years, I have worked on patients with the full gamut of dental issues,” Dr. Pomerance said. “Each patient receives my complete attention and expertise.” Dr. Pomerance performs all types of dental procedures, including braces, whitening, root canals, fillings, crowns and extractions. Dr. Pomerance brings his personal touch to ensure that each patient experiences the best possible outcome. “I have a passion for every aspect of dentistry,” he said. “I am always looking for new techniques, equipment and procedures to make my patients’ smiles more attractive and their mouths healthier.”

• Enhance comfort while chewing • Improve overall oral and psychological health • Improve overall appearance and regain confidence for smiling, talking, and eating.

Am I A Candidate for Durathin Veneers? You may not need implants, but you may want a spiffing-up for worn, chipped or discolored teeth, or for teeth that need more presence due to small size, or spaces left by old extractions. Since many veneers used in such procedures unduly disturb the natural tooth surface, you'll want to consider ultrathin porcelain DURAthin veneers. Titensor Dental uses this type of veneer to help maintain your tooth structural integrity and make your smile look as good as new with minimal or no drilling on your natural teeth. Check out pain free DURAthins at www.DurathinVeneers.com.

Peace-Of-Mind Dental Warranty —Protection That Follows Your Smiles Nationwide The American Dental Association recognizes over 157,000 dental practices. But how many stand behind their work —in writing? Many people require repeated work on the same teeth; and dental insurance rarely covers replacement of broken crowns, or other damage to recent replacements. Dr. Titensor started Dental Warranty Corporation, a national third party warranty company, because he wanted his patients to have the peace of mind in writing that their dental work is covered. This warranty backs up several procedures with a written guarantee of "No Fault Coverage". If anything —decay, biting on a hard object, auto accident damages, recent work, and repair costs are covered to the value of original treatment. Better yet, Dental Warranty coverage "Follows Your Smile!" If you have moved and cannot return to your original practitioner, Dental Warranty Corp (www.mydentalwarranty.com) honors your warranty elsewhere, and will even help you find a new dentist!

Of coarse, not all dental procedures are as complicated as implants or veneers. But some patients dread even a basic filling or cleaning. You may want to consider sedation dentistry if you have problems with one or more of the following: • Serious fear of dental work, or bad past experiences • Fear of needles • Aversion to "dental" smells and tastes • Severe embarrassment regarding your teeth • Difficulty getting numb on local anesthetic • Severe gag reflex • Sensitive teeth • Any other physical condition that interferes with dental work • Particularly complex dental problems • Time constraints • Dental treatment scheduled in close conjunction with other medical procedures or out-of-country travel Our friendly team will discuss your concerns and recommend one of the three types of sedation —oral, IV, N2O— available to you.

A Few of Our Other Services As a full-service practice Titensor Dental also offers: • Invisalign® Clear Braces for straightening your teeth • ZOOM® Smile Whitening • Secured dentures you can feel confident in • Oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea • Oral cancer exams • TMJ Treatments

Taking the Whole-Patient

Approach in

Dentistry

D

r. Jacquelyn Stanfield looks beyond her patients’ teeth to provide appropriate, optimum dental care

Did you know that one of the side effects of chronic kidney disease can be slow healing and excessive bleeding? Or that some anticonvulsant medications can cause an overgrowth of gum tissue? A patient’s overall health and any medications that are being taken can significantly affect that patient’s dental health. Flower Mound dentist Dr. Jacquelyn Stanfield and her VIP Dental Care staff are passionate about taking the whole-patient approach in dentistry. Dr. Stanfield recognizes that the best dental care is not one-size-fits-all but rather an individualized, customized dental care plan for each patient based on that patient’s needs. She’s careful to take into consideration the medical history as well as any long-term goals, perhaps fears, and questions that the patient may have expressed during a consultation or treatment appointment, allowing her to arrive at the best treatment practices for that specific patient. VIP Dental Care patients appreciate this whole-patient approach which goes hand-in-hand with Dr. Stanfield’s compassionate nature. Working with People, Not Machines Dr. Stanfield initially headed out into the workaday world with a Bachelor of Science degree from the

www.BestofDentonCounty.com

University of Texas. While working with computers she realized over time that something was missing. “I wrote a game for an IBM PC and it dawned on me, ‘This is not right for me. This is not enough for me.’ I definitely preferred working with people and not machines,” recalls Dr. Stanfield. As luck would have it, call it serendipity, some of Dr. Stanfield’s clients were orthodontists. Their work and their capacity to make a difference in their patients’ lives struck a chord with Dr. Stanfield. She decided to enter Baylor College of Dentistry, finishing her DDS degree in 1989 and opening her VIP Dental Care practice next to Baskin-Robbins in Flower Mound. Ten years later, she built her current location just down the road, easily distinguishable by the bright red awning. Keeping Pace Dr. Stanfield was the first dentist in the area to utilize the 3D CAD/CAM technology of CEREC® to make beautiful, natural-looking ceramic crowns and inlays in one appointment. She also uses the Identafi® oral cancer screening tool, which employs different colors of light to detect abnormal tissue, and has done extensive study in the potential elimination of future cavities by keeping a patient’s oral pH balanced. Having achieved the Invisalign® Preferred Provider status, Dr. Stanfield has enjoyed watching along with her Invisalign patients the attractive transformation that straight, healthy teeth can provide.

Dr. Stanfield’s patients will first tell you about her genuine concern for their comfort. What sets VIP Dental Care Apart? Dr. Stanfield will tell you, “My experience, continuing education, use of the latest technology, and my staff’s attention to detail are what set us apart. All of these things go into making our patients comfortable while attending to their

optimum dental health on a very individualized basis.” But Dr. Stanfield’s patients will first tell you about her genuine concern for their comfort. Yes, the latest technology and all of the other aspects are indeed important but it’s Dr. Stanfield’s compassion that means so much to them. And that compassion shines through as Dr. Stanfield states, “I love dentistry but it’s my patients that make my career so rewarding. They are my friends and I’m very blessed.” Best of Denton County 2013

Meet The Ultimate

Experts of The Backyard C

olby Coward has been in the customer service industry for 23 years, and in the construction industry for 12. According to him, the path that brought him to this company was a matter of “opportunity knocking at an unexpected time.”

“I came upon the company when I first moved to the Dallas area,” Colby explains. “Ended up working as a project manager for a few years followed by a stint as a General Manager, and when there was an opportunity to have ownership of the final product, I jumped.” Colby says he is proud that the company is known as “experts of the backyard,” and that they are the company that listens to homeowners when creating outdoor living areas. He says his biggest strength is creating the vision for the customer. According to Colby, he has worked with many customers, and in the current year alone, have installed many outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, firepits, retaining walls and pool coping.

In addition, the company has installed custom, iron and pool fences, along with walkways, patio covers and arbors. Colby says they do everything in a yard except install the pool and the landscaping. When asked what he is most passionate about, Colby responded with an unexpected answer. “First would be the competition,” he said. “I love going out and competing for the customer’s business. Second, would be the look on the customer’s face when the job is complete and they say we exceeded their expectations. Third is knowing that we have created a quality product that will be used for the coming years. I

"...the company that listens to homeowners when creating outdoor living areas." like to say that we are rebuilding the Dallas-Fort Worth area one job at a time.” In addition to his business, Colby discussed other areas of his life that are important. Colby says that he is passionate about his family, the Auburn Tigers and all sports, especially those where his children participate. When asked about where he can be found on a weekend, he responded that he is in the service industry, which means he works around the customer’s schedule. It is not unusual to find him working late most days and on Saturdays. “When I do get time off, it is nice to just relax and hide the cell phone,” he said, laughing. Colby grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado, an area he says is beautiful, but that he needed to spread his wings. He has had the privilege of traveling through his career in professional sports and through the construction industry.

He supports the Guns and Hoses Program as it supports police and fire departments, which he says need to be applauded for their service in the community. Colby says the only things he would not be able to give up would be football and hockey. “The only thing I can think of would be price,” Colby said, when asked why a customer would not want to work with his company. “You can always find a cheaper price and you can always find a higher price. To me it’s about quality and value. We also offer a 10-year warranty.” Colby also warned that looks can be deceiving in his business. He suggests researching any company before paying them any money, as each week he hears of someone who paid for service that they never received. “You have to protect you, your family, your home and your money,” Colby says. “I recommend the services of both Angie’s List and the Better Business Bureau. Take advantage of these services and get the quality you deserve.”

A Friendly Approach to

Painting Your Home C

lark Pittman was working for a large software development company in 2000, applying his knowledge and skills in the high technology field.

The work entailed a lot of travel – and way too much time away from home and his young family. Searching for a career that would provide a richer, fuller home life, Clark discussed his aspirations with a friend, Steve Long, who had founded Carnival Custom Painting a decade before. After some deliberation, Pittman became the first franchisee of the business and has been successfully spreading his business, one paint job at a time, in the area since then. He painted his first house in Flower Mound in 2000, and is known today for many quality painting projects in and around Flower Mound, Frisco, Lewisville and surrounding communities. Clark has a knack for being able to put his customers at ease. He knows his clients can be disturbed to see a large army of painters come into their homes, so he meets with his customers to explain how the painting project will proceed. Pittman says he helps to “manage expectations - that is probably the most important thing I do for my customers.” He is an attentive manager, visiting each project several times each day to check progress and communicate with the homeowners. It is not unusual that a customer may have second thoughts after selecting a paint color. Once a wall is covered, people sometimes see a color differently in their minds, so they want to make color changes. Clark understands this can happen and says, “I’m there to intercept that and keep the project moving. The last thing I want is for a customer to settle for a color they don’t love.” Close communications with the homeowner allows him to be flexible and keep costs down when changes are made early in the project. “We just want our customers to be delighted when we’re all done,” Pittman says. He shares 66 | Best of Denton County | 2013 |

the visions of his customers and strives to complete each project on time and within budget expectations. “We like to under-promise and over-perform,” he says. Clark and his team at Carnival Custom Painting deal with every job as if it is the only one they have. He believes painting a house is a relatively inexpensive change that can have a dramatic impact, not only in the appearance of the home, but also on how each family is affected by the renovation of their home. “It’s gratifying to see families experience this; to view their homes in a whole new light,” Pittman says. He is passionate about his business, especially working one-on-one with his customers. Glowing testimonials from his customers attest to his commitment to excellence. At home with his wife, Dina, Clark is perfectly content to work on home projects, tend the garden, or harvest honey from the honey bee hives on his Denton County acreage. They have chickens, a boxer, and regular visits from indigenous deer and wild turkeys. Lucky neighbors and friends are treated to the sweet nectar of the bees when Pittman collects the honey in July. The quasi-rural location reminds him of his Yukon, Oklahoma roots, but life is a little faster these days. He doesn’t go anywhere without his cell phone so he can stay in touch with his customers at all times.

I would rather be the one contractor that did what they said they would do and completed the project as expected and went away with no issues.” On the other hand, he might be remembered for his joyful exuberance. Clark remarked, “On numerous occasions, I’ve ridden a dirt bike while wearing a kilt. Ask to see the pictures sometime.” facebook.com/BestofDentonCounty

The Company That Cares

About Your Lawn

G

rassperson Lawncare & Landscape established itself in 1999 as a small company devoted to helping those in the D/FW Metroplex with their landscaping needs.

From its humble beginnings, the company has grown into a major landscaping business serving the North Dallas Metroplex and Denton County. As a licensed and bonded company, Grassperson is willing and able to help their customers properly care for any type of lawn or landscaping need. Brian Gasperson, the owner of Grassperson Lawncare & Landscape, began working outdoors when he was just eight years old. Although he began mowing lawns for family and neighbors living nearby, Gasperson quickly gained a reputation in the community for his dedication to his work. Even at such a young age, his attention to detail and concern for his customers’ satisfaction did not go unnoticed. After just one year of mowing for friends and family, the young Gasperson signed a contract with the North Texas Bank to maintain the yards of foreclosed homes until a potential buyer could be found. Gasperson later attended college and spent time working his way up from a kitchen cook to a Managing Partner with Outback Steakhouse. However, after many years in the restaurant www.BestofDentonCounty.com

business, he quickly discovered that landscaping was his passion. Gasperson left the corporate world to start his own lawn care business. The experiences and lessons learned while working for the corporation will not be forgotten. As he says, "I owe a tremendous amount of my success to the business systems and professional mind set that Outback taught me.” Working for a large corporation in the service industry, Gasperson learned that customers want someone who listens to them and takes their wishes into consideration. While other business owners might take a hands-off approach, he believes in getting his hands dirty. Customers are often surprised to find that he remembers their names and their homes even months after initially meeting with them. When asked about his customers, Gasperson says, "I love growing personal relationships with our customers. I strive to know every single name, address, and something about each and every one of them." His commitment to customer service is clear in every aspect of the business. Other companies might promise low prices to customers and later go above and beyond that initial estimate, but Grassperson Lawncare & Landscape remains honest with its’ customers from the very beginning. Gasperson says, "I believe that if someone is paying you for a service and trusting you with their business, it’s important to get it right!" He believes in providing customers with exactly what they want

and exceeding their expectations in the process. This philosophy has obviously served him well over the years. Born and raised in Denton County, Gasperson feels that growing up in the area gave him a unique view of the community that his business now serves. He has a personal connection with many of the schools and local organizations even today. Gasperson feels that business and community go hand in hand and says, "I try to support any organization that our current customers are involved in. We try to give back to the community as much as we possibly can to help support the kids in the local market."

"...commitment to their customers on both a personal and professional level..."

When not working in the field, Gasperson enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He loves watching his kids’ sporting activities, wake surfing, playing fantasy football, and eating Mexican food. Gasperson and his family are regulars at many of the local Mexican food restaurants where he enjoys running into customers on a weekly basis. He says, “I enjoy talking with customers and getting to know them and their families outside of business.” It is clear that Grassperson Lawncare & Landscape’s commitment to their customers on both a personal and professional level has led them to becoming one of the top landscaping companies in the area.

Anyone that welcomes them into their home when choosing a contractor can feel an immediate connection to their team. That is a great thing for clients, because Longacre prides itself on their team approach that provides their clients attentive guidance through every step of the project. This guidance offers a managed remodel process designed to give the customer peace of mind, from

That’s when Longacre Construction began building relationships with the community in earnest.

“We are very family oriented & dedicated to the Longacre name what it stands for in the community as well as what it provides families.” With a reputation for quality, responsibility, excellence, and personal commitment, their continued growth comes as no surprise to those who know them well. The modest duo approach their customers like family. Once they’ve committed to doing a job, the customer can sit back and let Longacre Construction push the project through. The Longacre team has a knack for producing a high quality product and building long lasting relationships within the community. The company

and its employees not only enjoy working together in a supportive team environment, but they also love to give back to their community through extensive volunteerism and contributions. When asked about their community and philanthropic involvement, Dan responded, “We are blessed to have so many nonprofits in this community that naming just one would be a disservice.” This unpretentious attitude carries through everything that Dan and Carol do. Long-time employee Liesel Herrera remarks, “Dan and Carol have a hard time praising themselves.” Longacre Construction has a long list of satisfied clients and an extensive portfolio of completed projects, from residential kitchen remodels to commercial additions and everything in between. Despite all of this professional success, Longacre Construction insists that it’s their greatest passion to produce a satisfied client. “While we have received accolades from top remodeling magazines, as well as the associations and community organizations, we really take pride in the work that we do. The awards we have received don’t compare to the satisfaction we get from our clients after a project is completed beyond their expectations.” When they aren’t busy serving the community, Dan and Carol are happiest watching their daughter play volleyball or relaxing with family and friends at the lake, and want to be remembered as having been a good friend to others. Joking about each other, Dan can poke at Carol for being opinionated, and Carol follows right back by pointing out that Dan is overly detail-oriented. But as the sun sets on the Lake, Dan and Carol are ready to head back to work to serve the community that they call home.

Within 1 year of opening on October 30th, 2010 both Pam and Kathy were able to leave their full time jobs and make Fat Cow BBQ their full time occupation. To date they have had to expand the restaurant 2 additional times and have double digit % growth month over month since the last phase of construction which was in October 2012. They are most passionate about serving amazing BBQ with old school customer service. The Fat Cow menu is small but they put a lot of love in every product that is served and that's what made the biggest difference compared to most restaurants. Their customers always feel welcome and feel they are right at home as soon as they walk in the door. Fat Cow also does everything possible to contribute to the community and charities which makes this business even more rewarding.

When they are not working you can usually find Henry and Allen on the golf course or on the boat at Lake Lewisville drinking a cold beer, brainstorming on how they can make this business even more successful. Pam spends her time with her grand children and is a magnificent country dancer which she wishes she had more time to do. Kathy spends most of her off time gardening, baking, working out and loving on their dogs Tiffany and Allen (named after their partner Allen). Henry grew up in Austin, Texas, Kathy in Plano, Texas, Pam in Mabank, Texas and Allen in El Paso, Texas. They want to be remembered as 4 great friends who decided to go into business together to fulfill a dream, without the benefit of a business plan, formal culinary training, or even a college degree. orris began his culinary career in the 1970s at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas, Texas. Salerno is familiar with success.

At the age of 27, he joined the prestigious Lowes Anatole Hotel in Dallas. Salerno said every working chef’s dream is to open their own restaurant. He followed his own words and opened not just one restaurant, but three: Salerno Restaurant in Flower Mound (1985-present), Gibbs Station in Coppell (1989-1999), and The Grotto in Highland Village (1994-present). In 1989 and 1991, Morris earned “Dallas Chef of The Year” by the Texas Chef Association. The Dallas Times Herald picked him as one of the “Top Ten Young Chefs of Dallas”. Morris has participated in and judged many Culinary Art Shows in the Southwest. In 2005, Morris and two of his cooks from The Grotto won “Iron Chef of The Southwest” and took home the only gold medal in the competition hosted by the Texas Chefs Association. Morris Salerno has been a competing chef

He also served as the past President of the Epicurean World Master Chefs Society. Last year, Morris fulfilled a lifelong dream and competed in the International Culinary Olympics in Germany. He and his team competed against 50 other teams and walked away with a Bronze medal! He draws from his traditional Italian family to make his restaurants a success. The Awardwinning, charismatic owner-chef Morris Salerno opened the Grotto in 1994 as a New American adjunct of his Italian staple Salerno’s. Both were in areas just beginning to blossom with development and now both serve notable food in established, decidedly upscale neighborhoods. The Grotto in particular has earned a reputation as a destination restaurant. You might call Morris Salerno a symbol of the American dream.

Baked with Love

ost people love delicious baked goods, but it seems like there are only a few oldfashioned bakeries around today. Taking the time to bake at home is something few people can really enjoy doing, and fewer do it well enough to share their masterpieces with others. This is where Cara Vasquez fits in extremely well. Cara has been a pastry chef for well over a decade and has owned her own bakery for the last two and a half years. Having her own bakery lets her not only produce the traditional confections, but Cara has a wonderful knack for developing her own special flavors, many of which you'd never expect to taste in a baked good. Her bakery, The Flour Shop, always has many distinct and special flavors that help form her special signature as a top-notch and award-winning baker. Cara is always creating new flavors, which are always a pleasant, and sweet, surprise for her many happy customers. Cara also enjoys many other things besides baking, and spends as much time as she can helping out with area non-profits. Cara states: “I am a huge animal lover so I try to give back to animal shelters when I can. We also do as much as possible for the women's shelter and Children's Advocacy Center. I think it's important to educate people on abuse and bullying whether it's a human or animal

and would love to be more involved in getting their message out. Cara loves horses in particular and is interested in helping with Spirit Horse in the near future. Cara and the staff at The Flour Shop have had the pleasure of winning different awards, namely the Best of Denton County for both 2012 and 2013, and also the Best Bakery in Flower Mound from Living Magazine. Cara and her husband were recently at the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation Event in early September, happily combining her passion for baking with her love of community. Cara spends her few hours of free time with her family and friends, making special time for her husband so they can enjoy date nights together. Cara is a very down-to-earth person who loves spending time with those she cares about. “I love my family and I don't know how I got so lucky. I love my friends...we call each other family. I love my staff past and present. I am surrounded by the most loyal, kind, inspiring, supportive, accepting and loving group of people. I hope that they feel the same about me,” she says, acknowledging the support she has enjoyed throughout the years.

"...always a pleasant, and sweet, surprise for her many happy customers." The Flour Shop is located at 1401 Shoal Creek in Highland Village, and customers are always welcome to share their comments with Cara and her staff. Picking up delicious baked goods or ordering a spectacular wedding cake is all within The Flour Shop's ability, and from their Facebook page, they already have many customers who are not only happily pleased but also wanting more of Cara's yummy baked goods. If you haven't had the pleasure of visiting The Flour Shop, you don't know what you're missing out on.

f you’ve been to any of our community fund raisers or charity auctions, you’ve no doubt seen or enjoyed some of the “fruits of labor” of Erika Spretz and Edible Arrangements of Flower Mound.

As the founder and owner, Erika is always ready to provide a donation, ranging from her signature chocolate covered strawberries to her popular gift certificates. While the support comes from her naturally generous heart, it also reflects her background in marketing and accounting that she received from Texas A & M University.

Fruits of Their Labor

The founding of her store at 3634 Long Prairie Road came in 2009 after an intense period of searching. Erika wanted to find just the right way to use the skills she had acquired while finding a way to be flexible and balanced for her family responsibilities. Yielding to her entrepreneurial urges, she decided to start her own business. After looking at a number of alternatives, she ended up behind her fruit-oriented counter because of a series of encounters with the numerals 111. When her son, ten at the time, suggested checking the Bible, Genesis 1:11 caught their eyes – where it tells of God creating fruit. She was certain that this was the business to be in after that confirmation! She has shown a real knack for her chosen specialty. She says that it gives her great joy to spread cheer throughout the community year round with the store’s artfully created and deliciously healthy fruit arrangements. Doesn’t matter what the occasion is… Holidays, Birthdays, Thank-you, Get Well, etc…the recipient is always so happy when it arrives!

Edible Arrangements 3634 Long Prairie Rd. Ste. 116 Flower Mound, Texas 75022 (972) 539-7800

Part of her secret is dealing with each customer personally. “I love to have time to work at the counter and greet our wonderful customers,” she states enthusiastically. “The real pleasures of what we do come from the personal interaction and our ability to make people smile. Whenever I can, I like to go out around the counter and shake hands with everyone that comes in…sometimes I even give them a hug!”

Restaurant & Food Services

In addition to happily supporting many of the local organizations and charities, Erika is especially involved in sponsoring the Flower Mound High School Football team, Cheerleaders and Rosettes each year. She has demonstrated her natural marketing instincts by developing a number of creative fundraisers and sponsorship ideas. Among the favorites that have benefited many local groups are the fundraiser certificates for boxes of chocolate covered strawberries or apples where a portion of every box sold is returned to the organization, and the “Fruit of the Future” Scholarship that is awarded to a few lucky seniors each year at the varsity football games. Erika has seemingly found the secret to balancing a successful business with a growing family. What she loves most is spending time with her husband Chad of 17 years, and their three children, Matthew(14), Ashley(12) and Emily(7). A typical Flower Mound family, they spend their share of time running between sporting events and dance, eating out, going to movies, and partaking of many of our community’s events. Somehow, she also finds time to volunteer at Valley Creek Church and be active with the popular Soul Sisters Women’s Group. Erika is also quick to share that she is able to meet these heavy demands with a cheerful spirit because of her Christian values. She has relied on God and her faith through the entire process, and always wants to be someone who is known to “Let Her Light Shine!”

Delicious and Nutritious

Pizza

I

f you want mouthwatering pizza with a hometown feel, Palio’s Pizza Café is the place to be.

Palio’s owner, Joey Schneider, says, “Our business is known for the personal service. We try very hard to have a Mom and Pop feel when you step in. We do our best to remember your orders before you even place them.” While Palio’s target customer is the pizza lover with exceptional taste, Palio’s offers more than just pizzas. Palio’s offers five different salads, seven sandwiches, nine pasta dishes, six desserts and four sides. They also have 22 different pizza options, including The Scorcher, the Hawaiian Sunrise and Frank’s Buffalo Chicken Pizza. With gluten-free dough and vegetarian options available, Palio’s menu is also allergy friendly. Schneider says, “We try our hardest to provide food for all dietary requirements. I have only been stumped once in 13 years by not being able to meet someone’s food allergies.” Not only is Palio’s menu diverse, but it is actually healthy. There are no preservatives in the food www.BestofDentonCounty.com

and everything is prepared fresh multiple times a day. Their thin crust pizzas are also loaded with toppings, which make their pizzas more of a balanced meal than competitors’ pizzas. It is clear that Schneider is passionate about serving people great tasting pizza that is great for them too. Owner Joey Schneider has been working for Palio’s since June 2001, when he worked with the creator of the Palio concept, Harry Awad, to build stores, train employees and market the company. Then in January 2009, Joey Schneider and his business partner TJ Hanley opened their own Palio’s in Denton. At only 28, Joey Schneider has already accomplished a great deal. He says, “My business partner and I move at a million miles an hour. In less than 5 years we have opened 4 locations...I love to be busy all the time.” Schneider is definitely busy. He regularly logs between 70 and 100 hours a week at work, and he has worked in literally every single position at Palio’s, from manager to audit to owner.

1716 S. Loop 228 Suite 110 Denton, Texas 76205 You Can Order Your Pizza Online

everything he does is ultimately for his family. He says, “I strive to show my children that with hard work and determination, you can be successful. Nothing that is worth while is given to you in this world. It must be worked hard for.” Palio’s is not just about pizza; Schneider also works hard to give back to the community. He works with local chamber members, businesses, schools and churches. He gives out free vouches for auctions, donates proceeds to charity and feeds entire organizations for free. While he would never turn anyone away, his heart especially goes out to volunteer activities that help the needy or children as well as local churches and organizations that help large groups of people.

"...offers five different salads, seven sandwiches, nine pasta dishes, six desserts and four sides."

It comes as no surprise that Palio’s has won several awards and honors over the years. Palio’s was voted “Tastiest Italian in North Texas” five times by Taste of North Texas. They were named one of the “Top 5 Best Pizzas in Dallas” by WFAA A-list. They were named “Best of Denton 2012” by the Denton Award Program and “Best of the Best Pizza” by the Denton Record Chronicle two years in a row. Palio’s has also won numerous Grapevine awards and they have been featured on several news programs, on HGTV and in several newspapers as well.

Schneider is not all work and no play, however. On the rare mornings he is not working, he can be found spending time with the people who matter most to him: his wife and two boys. While some may consider him a work-a-holic, he says that

If you have not stopped by one of Palio’s 23 independently owned and operated locations, there is no time like the present. Grab a pizza and say hi to Joey and you will be wondering why you waited so long to try Palio’s! 2013 | Best of Denton County | 81

Local Coffee with a

Global Impact

I

n the sprawl of Highland Village there's a new place for locals to settle in with a cup of coffee and a book.

Roots Coffeehouse is owned and operated by a local couple, Jay and Melanie McWhorter. They, along with original North Richland Hills Roots Coffeehouse owners, Matt and Janice Townsend, are no strangers to the coffee business, but when they began to dream about opening Roots in Highland Village, they knew they wanted it to be more than a coffee shop. "We wanted it to have an artisan feel," Melanie said, "and a way for people to understand and honor the process of coffee." For most of us coffee is a wake-me-up or a quick stop at our local shop in the morning, but for Roots it's much more about the holistic nature of coffee. From farmers and harvesters, roasters and packagers, baristas and customers, the process of making one cup of coffee is worth a farmer's entire day of labor.

82 | Best of Denton County | 2013 |

The folks at Roots may want their customers to understand the global effects of coffee—but not at the expense of the coffee itself. "We have a honey vanilla latte made from local honey from Round Rock HoneyFarmers with a dash of vanilla that is very popular with our customers. We also have a Cortado,as well as slow bar options such as Chemex, French Press and Hario V60 pour over. We also offer sandwiches, fresh pastries from La Spiga, Chocolate from Dude Sweet Chocolate, and homemade granola from Grapevine Grains." "We want to do things locally that honor things globally," says Melanie, "whether it is providing a great product from our farmers, to create more business for them, or whether it's supporting a community initiative like partnering with area non-profits." In an effort to do this, Roots carries mugs and pottery made by artisans in Cameroon. They're also partnering with local businesses and organizations to see an end to poverty, humantrafficking, and global water needs.

Restaurant & Food Services

The atmosphere at Roots is calm and peaceful. With interior design and custom art done by a local artist, Dustin Wekesser, to handcrafted furniture throughout the shop to live music on Friday nights, from its inception Roots has been a community project. "Community is important to us. We want Roots to be a place where people can come in, rest, talk, enjoy one another and coffee." They must be succeeding, because even though it's only been open a few weeks, it already feels like Highland Village's very own living room. Meet the Warrior Mother Behind Adventure Kids Playcare

M

ichelle Rae gazes out onto a toddler play area, a smile creasing her lips. "I run a tight ship," she explains. Michelle owns and operates an award-winning daycare called Adventure Kids Playcare, which is fastly becoming a fixture in Denton County. Adventure Kids has cultivated a sterling reputation for no-nonsense safety, reliability, and cleanliness--all values that hit close to home for Michelle. For her, Adventure Kids is about allowing parents to deposit the most precious thing in their lives into a fun, worry-free environment, so that those parents then have the freedom to become fullyactualized participants within the community and within their families: "I feel passionate that parents have the opportunity to take time for themselves and nurture their marriages because they know their children are safe and having fun with us. I think happy parents and/or a strong marriage are some of the greatest gifts parents can

give their children. As much as I love to be around my children all of the time, I find that I am a much more patient and loving mom when I have taken time for myself. Also, I know that my children will leave someday. I pray that my husband and I model for them what a loving and respectful relationship looks and feels like. I also want our marriage to last beyond my children's childhood, so nurturing is important to me."

whose parents were charged with abuse and neglect. I loved that job, I had a passion for helping children, and I always knew I was on the right side!"

The business is a service to the area that meshes well with Michelle's other ongoing commitments to the community. There is Children's Ministries at Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church, where she and her husband have been members for over 12 years. There is CCA, or Christian Community Action. There is even the CACDC, or Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County. Each acronym is more of an intriguing mouthful than the last. And each helps paint a picture of a woman devoted to the idea that children truly are our most precious asset, one in constant need of our support and nurture.

"When we came to Texas, I prayed for a job that would allow me to be the kind of mother I wanted to be. That meant a job that would not keep me away from my family for 60+ hours a week. I wanted a job where my children could be with me. One night, strapped for a sitter, I took a neighbor's advice and tried Adventure Kids Playcare in Parker Square. My son, Kaleb, loved it. We noticed that they were offering franchises, and the rest as they say is history."

Michelle Rae has been at this for seven fulfilling years, but life before Adventure Kids had its fair share of challenges. "I have always known I wanted to work with children," she ruminates. But articulating that passion in her career was not automatic. After flirting with the ideas of teaching or being a pediatrician, Michelle settled on law. In time, she developed a thriving practice while in New Jersey, serving the public sector. "A visit to our county courthouse demonstrated to me that I wanted to work for people who could not pay. I represented people who had HIV and AIDS and lived in poverty. We assisted them in all areas – permanency planning for their children; wills, housing law, family law, etc. I represented children in foster care and those

When Michelle's husband was transferred to Texas, the charm of The Lone Star State grabbed hold of their hearts, and they knew they were here to stay. Her introduction to Adventure Kids happened quite by accident:

History indeed. As Winston Churchill once said, "History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it." And if this tireless children's advocate and community devotee has her say, so will she.

Potential

Before Kumon, I worked as a Senior Retirement Specialist for a financial company. Staying home after leaving the corporate world, I was very certain about the fact that I would like to own a business that dealt with education and kids. It was my passion and my belief in the Kumon method that led to my decision to this business in 2007. I am the franchise owner/ Director of the center where my team and I motivate the kids to become independent learners. When a child enrolls at Highland Village Kumon., we like to know the complete child, the family and the expectation. When the child starts to drift away from the subject, I like to discover the cause of their reluctance to do their work, whether it is motivation, difficulty level, or just not being challenged enough. My passion is the level of involvement I have with my students. With parental involvement added-in, it makes my day when we can all step back and see the results and success the child has achieved. My satisfaction level is at its peak when I see the light that sparkles in a kid’s eyes when they realize their potential. They feel confident and have a goal. I feel I have arrived where I want to be as a coach. I have been classified as an “elite” instructor from the time I completed my one year of certification training with Kumon. I always tell my staff that the day I run my Kumon as a business is the day I make profit but show loss as a coach. The love for kids and my belief in the Kumon Program is what makes our center profitable and different from the rest. You will usually find me at the Kumon center. Just in case you missed me, you can find me at my local gym trying to make sure I am living my life to my

fullest potential, too. My loved ones have shown me the strengths I have inside me to fulfill my dreams and I want to make sure I do. Exercise and healthy diet is the key to today’s lifestyle. My love for kids also took me into another direction in life -- for helping those who are special but are dealing with a life-threatening medical condition. I started granting wishes to kids as a Wish Granter for Make-A-Wish foundation 7 years ago, and this is my second year as the Volunteer Chair for Wish Night Gala that takes place in May of 2014. I am a firm believer that each child has his/her own potential, that educators leave a lasting impression on the child. I would like them to remember me as the instructor who showed them how to believe in themselves and the potential each one of them has inside. With each new student, I realize I have a long

way to go to reach that goal, but this journey will be made up of many children and many success stories in the end. Success in my profession can come only due the support and team effort from my staff. I feel that they share the same passion I have to help the kids achieve their best. Success comes with hard work from the students, sincerity of my staff and my belief in the Kumon program.

heryl Close began her career in education first as a teacher then leading up to central office administrator and leadership coach.

In 2008, she realized the position of principal had become so demanding that talented campus administrators would benefit from a new and different kind of support as they grew into leadership roles. She collaborated with a colleague and created a coaching based leadership development program. This led to the creation of her consulting company, Close Coaching & Consulting, LLC in 2011. Today, she devotes her professional time to coaching and consulting with individuals and teams to become the best leaders of tomorrow. Cheryl’s clients know her to be someone who is patient and has unwavering belief in their ability to outperform expectations. They rely on her talent for listening and understanding, crucial skills for a coach to cultivate. Her clients rate her services as better than expected. One client wrote, “Cheryl is supportive, kind and most importantly, nonjudgmental. She will lead you to clarity in any situation. Cheryl separates the noise from the core function of your job, which allows you to clearly see the forest, not just the trees.” 94 | Best of Denton County | 2013 |

Cheryl has provided leadership coaching to a wide variety of people: business professionals, people in life transition, new school principals, central office administrators and other community and non-profit leaders. She empowers them to reach their leadership goals resulting in improved performance. She will work with her clients on all aspects of leadership: vision, mission, goal setting, prioritizing, communication, conflict management, time management, organization, public relations, team building, supervising and motivation. She will accept a limited number of clients to coach on personal issues such as parenting, changing careers, finding life balance or overcoming a significant personal event.

"Cheryl is supportive, kind and most importantly, non-judgemental." She is truly passionate about the power of coaching. At its core, it assumes the best of others, and it manifests a belief in another person’s abilities. Repeatedly, she has experienced how powerful it can be when someone makes a decision, implements it and experiences the results. The leader’s confidence grows and the next step is taken. She does not focus on presenting her solutions to the client's problems. Instead, she is a thinking partner who asks questions, explores ideas, facilitates solutions and holds the client accountable in their particular growth areas. Cheryl finds it extremely rewarding to watch her clients grow, achieve and make a difference in the world. When she is not working, Cheryl spends time with her husband, Van, and other family members. She has an increasing number of nieces and

nephews whom she enjoys watching as they grow and develop. She is a voracious reader, and she loves thrillers. She enjoys sewing, embroidery, knitting, painting, drawing, photography, camping and writing. She has two dogs, Sugar, a 6 year old Maltese, and Smoochie, a 15 year old rescued Bichon. Cheryl was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, but moved to Dallas, TX at the age of nine. She has lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area ever since with the exception of a couple of years in other areas of Texas. She loves living in Denton County and appreciates the people, culture and recreation. Cheryl promotes volunteerism. While she was principal of Donald Elementary in Flower Mound, she created a volunteer program in which members logged more than 20,000 hours in one year. She supports many wonderful non-profits including Christian Community Action (CCA), animal rescue, Friends of the Family, the library and places for children in crisis. As a community project, Cheryl and a group of friends made pajama pants for children in need in the Denton area. She is a member of the International Coaching Federation and the North Texas Chapter of ICF and has won the Prism award for Coaching Excellence as well as the No Child Left Behind National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. She has completed all of the requirements as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC), and she has received this distinguished coaching credential from the International Coaching Federation through Coaching for Results in July 2012.
