Small businesses are the lifeblood of local communities from Flower Mound to Denton or Argyle and everywhere in between. The privilege of spotlighting those exceptionally brilliant stars in our community has been the passion of Murray Media Group for 10 wonderful years. We love our job: to discover local folks who perform their callings with enthusiasm, professionalism, and southern grace, and to introduce them to you so you can shop locally with confidence. We believe it's only right to give honor to whom honor is due, so this award is our way of thanking these businesses for their contributions that make Denton County such a beautiful, classy, family friendly place to live. Our "Best of Denton County" award is presented to these winners, and this prestigious logo is available for them to present in their advertising year round. If you've been around here long, you understand the honor bestowed upon these businesses by this award. As a local business ourselves that has been blessed with international success, now publishing over 5 million magazines, we believe in these folks and understand the importance of a strong, mutually supportive community. After all, every great company has
to start somewhere. According to one ambitious entrepreneur, "You need a lot of passion for what you're doing because it's so hard. Without passion, any rational person would give up." His name? Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of both Apple and Pixar: he understood the importance of rewarding a job well done. So do we. Our talented team of designers, photographers, sales reps, and copywriters have put together a beautiful magazine that will inspire you with all that our area has to offer. We are so thankful to each of them for using their talents so energetically to highlight these businesses for you. We really think you'll enjoy this issue: you can check it out and sign up for our newsletter at www.bestofdentoncounty.com. A Bank that juggles for you By Steve Gamel
In today’s world, it seems there is at least one giant financial institution on every street corner. In some instances, there are competing banks sitting in the same parking lot. Quite simply, customers have options. One bank continues to stand out while surrounded by its big-box competitors, not only with the products and services it provides, but as a bank that lives and breathes with the communities it serves. PointBank has been a staple in Denton County for more than 130 years and continues to buck the trend of the stodgy and impersonal styles that tend to dominate most too-big-to-fail banks. Sitting in one of the nine PointBank branches is a little different, where its president, Ray David Jr., is very much the Ring Master he is described to be -- energetic and eager to get the “show” going for his audience. Anyone who sees him at one of the many community events around town knows he is always “on”. “We pride ourselves on the fact that we have that personal touch, that we can provide the customer with what they need and cater to the needs of each customer,” said David, who has served as PointBank’s president since 2004. “I am always out meeting with customers or at community events. I think there are maybe four banks in Denton County where you can actually shake the hand of the president. www.BestofDentonCounty.com
As we move forward, everything we do must meet our culture of customer service.” For lack of a better phrase, so far so good. PointBank’s approach to treating every customer like its only customer has not only survived in an ever-changing financial environment -- it’s thrived. This year, PointBank finished as the leader in four categories in Best of Denton County. Voters awarded the bank top ranking in Commercial Banking, Personal Banking, Business Banking and Best Student Bank. “It’s a gauge of how we’re doing,” David said of being recognized by customers. “Our goal is to be exactly what each of these awards represent. When you win one of these awards, it lets you know you are on track. We do not take these awards lightly. We strive for this and are proud when recognized for it. We believe it to be a necessary element of a community bank. It’s not by accident that we win in these areas. We’ve shown we want to stay around as a community bank.” PointBank -- which has approximately $400 million in assets -- treats its customers like family because, well, PointBank is a family. The bank has 125 employees and nearly all shareholders are from Texas and live in Denton County. That leads to an intense desire to give back to each community in as many ways as possible. AGING By Steve Gamel with Rebecca Romanucci,RN, and Owner/Manager, of RSR Medical RSR MEDICAL LOOKS OUT FOR ITS CLIENTS AND ITS COMMUNITY
For Rebecca Romanucci, when attempting to age gracefully, less is definitely more. Rebecca started RSR Medical Skin Rejuvenation, LLC six years ago with the belief that a conservative approach to skincare rejuvenation is not only the safest way to treat people, but it is also what people want. A TWO-TIME BEST OF DENTON COUNTY WINNER When asked what Rebecca believes makes RSR Medical different, she responded, “We believe in aging… gracefully; slowing down the negative effects of the aging process,” Romanucci said. “As we age, we carry with us the results of every smile and fun under the sun event. We wear these like badges: lines, crinkles and wrinkles. But, we

Staff Sets Flower Mound's Envy Nails Apart Written by Mark Miller
Seemingly located on nearly every corner, there are a wealth of choices for people needing somewhere to go for manicures and pedicures. Best of Denton County voters said their favorite such place for 2014 is Envy Nails of Flower Mound, not to be confused with venues of similar name elsewhere. It's the original one that has been at the same location and in the same family since 1999. “We've been around for 15 years which is unusual,” said Thang Vu, who with wife Vanessa Nguyen co-owns Envy located in the same complex as Sprouts. “A lot of other places either close or change owners after two years or their staff turns over a lot.” The Envy Nails staff has stayed relatively the same for quite awhile including two employees who have been there for more than 10 years. Nguyen and Vu help ensure such continuity by offering benefits most other venues don't including being closed on major holidays. “The longer they've worked here, the better they will serve the customers,” said Vu, whose salon has 10 staffers. “At most places the people work long hours seven days a week. Ours don't work so many hours and only work five days a week.

Envy Nails serves up to thousands of customers annually, many of whom Nguyen and Vu know by name. They pride themselves on their relaxing atmosphere with soft music and no televisions.

"Nguyen and Vu also pride themselves on learning the latest trends and techniques from research and annual industry trade shows. " The couple opened Envy after owning a Carrollton dry cleaner for seven years after moving from Vietnam in 1991. When they first opened Envy, nail salons in the area were scarce and not as regulated as today.
“Sometimes people do nails because they want to look good and they want to feel good at the same time,” Nguyen said. “After work they want a place where they can hang out with their friends, relax, and feel good at the same time. It's not just about getting their nails done.”
Envy Nails has tried to be at the forefront of sanitation. Each pedicure customer is given a disposable Footsie Bath plastic liner.

Passion and Friendship,
A Winning Combination! Written by Kelly Murray
Salon Sage seemed like a dream to Shauna McCabe and Kendra Schmidt when they started doing hair 9 years ago. Having been friends for over 10 years, the two women turned their passion for making women feel beautiful and special into an award-winning salon. Shauna and Kendra help others by offering salon services that customers are truly satisfied with, something that they are passionate about. Thanks to their commitment to continuous learning Salon Sage won Best of Denton County for a secondstraight year. "It's very flattering," Shauna said. "Last year was amazing, and to be able to do it again is so exciting." One of the biggest reasons they're able to give their clients beautiful hair is their dedication to keeping up to date on current trends and fashions. Another key to their success is the enjoyment that they get from hair styling. "Going to work doesn't feel like work when you truly love what you do and you get to do it with your best friends every day while making new ones with all our clients." is how Shauna and Kendra explain it. It is easy for them to put their heart and soul into their work when it is something they are so passionate about.

The women take a welcoming, laid back approach to hair styling, something else that makes the Salon Sage unique. They make sure that anyone can enjoy time at their salon thanks to this relaxed attitude and their sincere desire to help each customer feel their best. This plays a big part as to why they are considered the best in Denton County for the second-straight year.
"One of the biggest reasons they're able to give their clients beautiful hair is their dedication to keeping up to date on current trends and fashions." Shauna and Kendra enjoy spending time with their husbands and children as well as staying active in their church when not at the salon working hard to make their customers feel special and beautiful. Changing Lives Is Just Part of What We Do Each year, 6-8 million cats and dogs enter animal shelters throughout the United States. Due to low adoption rates, most of these animals never find a forever home. Animal shelters are forced to cope with animal overpopulation through euthanasia. That’s where Texas Coalition for Animal Protection steps in to make a difference.
“The staff was very friendly and professional. The whole process was quick and simple. I will continue to use Texas Coalition for Animal Protection for my vet pet needs.” – Jessica O.
“The answer to stopping euthanasia and overpopulation starts with prevention” says TCAP Executive Director, Stacey Schumacher. The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) has been a leader in animal welfare since its formation in 2002. TCAP provides compassionate solutions to pet overpopulation and euthanasia. As a Denton-based non-profit, TCAP provides the lowest prices for preventative animal care throughout North Texas. In 2007, the Humane Society of the United States named TCAP as the "Most innovative approach to animal welfare in the nation."
TCAP currently operates standalone clinics in Denton, Fort Worth, Hurst, and Burleson, but chances are that TCAP is never far from your home with one of their travel “MASH”style clinics. “We understand that people have jobs and cannot always make the drive to one of our main clinics, so we make ourselves available throughout DFW at local animal shelters and community centers,” says Schumacher.
TCAP's skilled and caring veterinary team has spayed/neutered more than 209,000 North Texas animals and has vaccinated more than 335,000 animals against the deadly rabies virus. TCAP's ultimate goal is to substantially reduce animal overpopulation and euthanasia throughout North Texas, while promoting animal welfare. Spaying and neutering pets is the most effective way to reduce animal overpopulation and many problems that result from overpopulation such as malnutrition, abandonment, high euthanasia rates, and neglect.
In addition to providing an invaluable service to pet owners, the Texas Coalition for Animal Protection strives to provide its support to animal shelters and rescue organizations. “We truly value these institutions for their contribution to their communities. We want to be there to help make their rescued animals more adoptable and improve the number of animals they can help as a result” says Schumacher. TCAP’s Executive Director goes on to state that the combination of reducing animal overpopulation and increasing adoption rates can actually lower the cost of city-funded programs and in-turn lower the cost to North Texas taxpayers.
If you have a pet that you would like to get sterilized, scheduling an appointment is easy. You can call TCAP at 940-566-5551 or visit their website at www.texasforthem. org and click “Request Appointment”. Prices for sterilization begin as low as $35.00. Annual vaccinations for a dog or cat can be purchased for $25 on a walkin basis from 9 am – noon at all three main TCAP locations and 10 am – noon at all travel locations. North Texans can learn more by visiting TCAP’s website at www.texasforthem.org.

A Bank That les for You Jugg
greatest Show in town
James Pierson first planned to build a town in north Denton County in 1853 and Pilot Point’s first bank opened its doors 31 years later. It was 1884 and the bank, Pilot Point Bank, served as the forerunner according to records from the Pilot Point Chamber of Commerce. Pilot Point National Bank was chartered on July 13, 1892, 8 years after opening its doors as a non-chartered bank. On November 15, 1995, Pilot Point National Bank shortened its name and officially became PointBank. PointBank currently has nine branch locations throughout Denton County, with continuous plans for future expansion and growth.
Why Bank with a Community Bank? Our Strength We are here for you today — and tomorrow. We've been providing banking services since July, 1884. We have money to lend and a desire to see the businesses in our community grow and strengthen the local economy. Our Products and Services Technology combined with personal service is how we provide solutions.
In February 1987, PointBank opened its first branch office in Aubrey, Texas. Since that time, seven additional branches have opened in Argyle, Denton (two locations), Lake Cities, Lewisville, Little Elm and the newest location, Flower Mound.

The officers, directors, shareholders and employees of PointBank are proud of the record of service the bank has achieved over its long history.
Our People The entire PointBank family of staff is friendly, courteous and dedicated to helping our customers.
PointBank has been an independent, locally owned bank serving the Denton County community since 1884—over 130 years!
Expert bankers who are passionate about helping you grow your business and manage all of your family banking needs.
A.H. Gee was the first president of the bank, which was capitalized with $80,000. J.A.L. McFarland was named the bank’s first cashier. Other bank presidents through the years have been H.W. Gee, 1929-1938; J. Earl Selz, 1938-1963; Walter Ray, 1963-1976; Ralph Burton, 1976-1981; J. Raymond David, Sr., 1981-2004; and Ray David, Jr., 2004-present. Originally built in 1892, the building was remodeled in 1940. In 1965, the bank’s operations were moved to 324 South Washington Street in Pilot Point.

The Amazing Davids! Ring Master
Strong Man
Lion Tamer
Ray David, Jr., President
Jonathan David, EVP, Sr. Lending Officer
Raymond David, Chairman
The ringmaster is the most important, since he stagemanages the performance, introduces the various acts, and guides the audience through the entertainment experience. Likewise, Ray’s role as President requires that he manage the day to day and guide the Bank Executives as they “perform” their roles. Ensuring that the customers in the end have the best experience possible is always the goal.
www.BestofDentonCounty.com
The Strong Man would perform various feats of strength such as the bent press (not to be confused with the bench press, which did not exist at the time), supporting large amounts of weight held overhead at arm's length, steel bending, and chain breaking, etc. The strength in a bank lies with its lending capabilities, as senior lending officer, it is Jonathan who manages this for PointBank, leading a team with diverse loan products designed to strengthen our customer’s business.
Lion taming is the training and taming of lions, either for protection, or more commonly, entertainment, particularly in the circus. Raymond tames the PointBank bond and investment portfolio. Much like lion taming, investment taming requires focus and dedication, managing active risk, while keeping an eye on all movement and staying calm and patient.

Independence
is Twice as Nice for
Fellers
Insurance Agency By Mark Miller
Tommy Fellers knew enough of his father's construction and commercial concrete business to know it wouldn't be his life's calling. Five years working for someone else in the insurance industry also didn't cut it. “I always had a desire to own my own business and the challenges that go with that opportunity,” he said. So in 2000, he became an independent insurance agent and has been happy ever since. Customers of his Fellers Insurance Agency apparently agree by choosing it as winner in both the auto insurance and insurance agency categories of the 2014 Best of Denton County contest. It was the first time the agency was nominated in either category. “This says our customers think we treat them right,” Fellers said. “There's a lot of choices out there. This gives us credibility. It gives us

respect. Coming from our peers and customers it says these guys are who they say they are.” Being an independent insurance agent has plenty of advantages, according to Fellers. “When you are a captive agent, you work for one company,” Fellers said. “As an independent agency you work for your customers. You put the right program in place for the client and not necessarily the company. We like to think we have more options when others may have significant increases in their rates when life changes.”
“We have gained the trust of our clients,” Fellers said. “As a result, we receive referrals which help us build upon the cornerstones of our agency; quality coverage, superior value and personal service.”
"As an independent agency you work for your customers." In business since 2000 and at its current location on Main Street in Lewisville since 2012, the Fellers Insurance Agency handles policies for autos, home, boats, motorcycles, business and life. “Just about anything you see or come across daily, we can insure” said Fellers, who has lived all of his life in Denton County in Lewisville, Flower Mound and Highland Village. Fellers and his team of seven sales and account executives represent Safeco, Progressive, Travelers, Mercury, The Hartford, Liberty Mutual, Zurich, MetLife, Kemper, ASI Lloyds, Foremost and Republic Group. Fortunately for Fellers Insurance Agency, business has grown each year it's been in business.

Yet Remains Loyal to Local Roots
No matter how busy Kim Pollard gets or how successful her company becomes, she’ll always be that local girl who wanted nothing more than to dream big and help other women do the same. Pollard is the owner of Bookkeeper Girl, an online bookkeeping service located in Denton. She created it in 2008 with the idea of making bookkeeping affordable for small businesses. By using Intuit QuickBooks and tools like Skype, email and texting, she can still provide that ever-important personal touch for clients without the expense and time-drain of a faceto-face meeting.
As more clients jumped on board, Pollard realized she was on to something. Over the years, she went from a single office in Denton to remote offices in Dallas and Austin. But Pollard didn’t stop there. “The next logical step was to share my formula with other entrepreneurs who could help me expand this business model more quickly,” Pollard said. “I wanted Bookkeeper Girl to be the No. 1 provider of outsourced bookkeeping and payroll services nationwide.” So in September of this year, Pollard went national and announced a licensing model starting with seven new consultant locations in Abilene, Dallas (2), Denton, Illinois, Iowa and Kentucky. Essentially, she opened her business up to other talented bookkeepers across the country to come on board and allow her to brand them under the Bookkeeper Girl name in their respective cities.

Bookkeeper Girl Goes National,
“I have always had a vision of taking Bookkeeper Girl nationwide and growing it into America’s online bookkeeper,” Pollard said. “I’m able to make this vision a reality and help other entrepreneurs make their dreams a reality as well...all the while providing clients online, trusted, loyal bookkeeping services from East Coast to West Coast.” Pollard feels blessed that she has a successful business, and being a Best of Denton County winner further validates all of her efforts. When she’s not working, Pollard uses her company to help support the local community and the communities of her consultants, including collaborating with the local universities to create internships. She also provides free bookkeeping services to area non-profits and works with another Denton non-profit group, TechMill, to help kick-start a co-working space for local startup businesses. For Pollard, it’s really all in a day’s work.

Creating The Best
Client Experience Written By Steve Gamel
Meeting a customer’s needs from all angles typically is rewarded by repeat business, new referrals and community recognition. That client experience is crucial in the mortgage business, which is why Jim Mitzel and his team at Primary Residential Mortgage, Inc. want to be the best at it. Tucked away in a quaint office building just south of Justin Road off FM 2499 in Flower Mound, Primary Residential Mortgage stands out in a rapidly growing and competitive industry by staying true to its clients. Instead of solely touting various loan options and competitive pricing – which everyone seems to be able to provide – Mitzel has put together a staff of mortgage planners and client service staff who all call Denton County home and want to be your lender for life. “For us it’s all about putting the right people in the right spots because we strive so hard to provide a solid client experience,” Mitzel said. “Anyone can offer a mortgage. The reality is, how much is your client enjoying their experience? How well are you treating your referral partners? We want to take the stress away and make it as easy as possible.”

That down-to-earth mentality is paying off. Primary Residential Mortgage was named Best Mortgage Company in this year’s Best of Denton County awards while loan officer Beth Elston – a staple within the growing company – was named Best Mortgage Banker. Within Primary Residential Mortgage, which is a national company, Mitzel and Elston recently came in second and sixth, respectively, out of 1,000 loan officers in a customer satisfaction survey. On a more personal and local level, Mitzel pointed to an office wall adorned with thank you cards and letters from satisfied clients. “When we get a call from an excited client who found the perfect house and they want us to help them get into it, that’s rewarding,” Mitzel said. Mitzel and his team are heavily involved in the community and regularly help local women’s groups and animal rescue companies. Best of Denton County 2014

Longacre Construction, Celebrating
25 Years of Serving Our Community By Kelly Murray
Not too many businesses get the opportunity to celebrate 25 years of service in a community but the team at Longacre Construction is doing just that. They have built their thriving business by providing small-town friendliness and service, combined with a reputation for excellence and professional results. If you are looking for good old fashioned, hardworking, honest folks then Longacre Construction is just the company you are looking for. Longacre Construction has spent the last 25 years building a reputation for being a quality remodeling company that values relationships with its clientele and community. Anyone that welcomes them into their home when choosing a contractor can feel an immediate connection to their team. That is a great thing for clients, because Longacre prides itself on their team approach that provides their clients attentive guidance through every step of the project. This guidance offers a managed remodel process designed to give the customer peace of mind,
The Longacre team has a knack for producing a high quality product and building long lasting relationships within the community. The company and its employees not only enjoy working together in a supportive team environment, but they also love to give back to their community through extensive volunteerism and contributions. When asked about their community and philanthropic involvement, Dan responded, “We are blessed to have so many nonprofits in this community that naming just one would be a disservice.” This unpretentious attitude carries through everything that Dan and Carol do. Longtime employee Liesel Herrera remarks, “Dan and Carol have a hard time praising themselves.” Longacre Construction has a long list of satisfied clients and an extensive portfolio of completed projects, from residential kitchen remodels to commercial additions and everything in between. Despite all of this professional success, Longacre Construction insists that it’s their greatest passion to produce a satisfied client. “While we have received accolades from top remodeling magazines, as well as the associations and community organizations, we really take pride in the work that we do. The awards
we have received don’t compare to the satisfaction we get from our clients after a project is completed beyond their expectations.” When they aren’t busy serving the community, Dan and Carol are happiest watching their daughter play volleyball or relaxing with family and friends at the lake, and above all else want to be remembered as having been a good friend to others. Joking about each other, Dan can poke at Carol for being opinionated, and Carol follows right back by pointing out that Dan is overly detail-oriented. But as the sun sets on another weekend at the Lake, Dan and Carol are ready to head back to work to serve the community that they call home. “As a company, we are all very family oriented and dedicated to the Longacre name - what it stands for in the community as well as what it provides our families. If we can give our clients peace of mind during the remodeling process, and build our satisfied clientele, that’s why we come to work every day.”
from concept and original design, to budget and cost analysis, to day-to-day worksite management, to completion and cleanup. The company office recently relocated to 411 Harn, Lewisville, TX, and currently serves the Flower Mound, Highland Village, Coppell, Argyle, Dallas, Carrollton, Denton, and Lewisville areas. Information can also be found online at www.longacreconstruction.com, on Facebook, You are always welcome to give them a call at 972-436-6200. Dan Longacre, COO and founder of the company, began building this community focused construction business on his own in 1986. A true American entrepreneur, Dan was soon joined by Carol Longacre as the business began to grow. Carol’s contributions to the business helped to connect Longacre with other enterprises and trade associations in the area. That’s when Longacre Construction began building relationships with the community in earnest. With a reputation for quality, responsibility, excellence, and personal commitment, their continued growth comes as no surprise to those who know them well. A Bank That Juggles for You
. . . Continued from Page 11
Jonathan David, the youngest of the David family, has dove head on into the family business, utilizing his uncanny ability to work with numbers to provide unrivaled quality and growth in the bank’s loan department. Because of its size and dedication to the community, PointBank is able to offer a wide-array of loan options, including real estate, residential, farm, agricultural, aviation and personal options. Jonathan is the face of PointBank in that regard and can be found out and about visiting with local businesses face to face. The David family has served consumers in Denton County for more than 30 years. Raymond David Sr. became president of the bank in 1981 before handing the reigns over to Ray in 2004. All the while, Raymond has instilled faith and philanthropy into his sons and the bank as a whole. They openly express these values daily with their employees. In fact, every meeting at PointBank starts with thanks to the Lord, and each employee is encouraged to give back to the community with their time, talent and treasure. It is in hiring individuals who fit this culture that PointBank remains strong and a leading example in the community. Each year, PointBank employees, including the David family, hold themselves accountable by volunteering their time for a variety of charitable organizations. The bank also recently hosted its 24th annual golf tournament, where all net proceeds benefit local libraries. When it comes to products and services, Ray David prides himself on running a bank that has grown and adapted to its customers’ needs. For area entrepreneurs, that means having a bank willing to be there when they need loans to start, grow or even save their businesses. “Unlike bigger banks, we have the opportunity to get to know the person behind the business when working on their loans,” David said. So what are the differences between a community bank and a large bank? Mr. David provides this answer. “Consumers are needlessly paying higher fees and being denied loans by big banks that received billions in taxpayer bailout dollars,” David said. “We are letting them know that this can stop today by moving to locally-owned community banks that are financially strong and focused on the customer relationship, whether it be business or personal.” Community banks generally charge lower fees than those of large banks and are more likely to reinvest money back into the community and local economy. 42 | Best of Denton County | 2014 |
Financial & Real Estate
PointBank is also one of the only financial institutions to offer debit card rewards with local businesses. It’s a program where the customers earn points whenever they use their PointBank debit card to shop. They can earn even more points if they shop local with merchants who are also branded within the program. As customers earn gift cards, those gift cards go right back into helping local merchants. On top of that, the bank recently began offering Sponsorship debit cards for Marcus, Flower Mound, Lewisville, Liberty Christian, Argyle, Denton, Denton Ryan, Guyer, Lake Dallas, Pilot Point and Aubrey high schools. The mascot-branded cards are designed for both the bank and its customers to show off their school spirit. In so doing, PointBank donates $25 to the customer’s favorite school booster club upon the opening of a new checking account. “All of this is just another way for us to show how much we care about our clients and how in tune we are with Denton County residents and businesses,” David said. “We want to be different, and while we realize we aren’t for everyone out there, we are a popular option.” And that’s just what PointBank has going on RIGHT NOW. Ray David truly means it when he says he is constantly peering into the future. As the first bank in Denton County to have real-time online banking, followed by the first depository ATMs, PointBank has always led the way in banking technology. Last year, PointBank was the first community bank to have mobile deposit capture and, more recently, launched online account opening. David is looking at several more options to improve the customer experience. “We’re going to be forever innovative,” Ray said with a smile. And forever a Ring Master of c o m m u n i t y banking.

Strength Passion Discipline “He’s all heart,” is how clients, employees, peers and friends describe Jesse Leyva, owner of Jesse James Fit (JJF) in Flower Mound and Outlaw Bootcamp in Little Elm. When people think of personal training, nutritional consulting and supplemental counseling, they tend to think of big gym environments or bodybuilding. This isn’t the case with Jesse or his trainers. They transform lives with every client’s well-being a top priority. “Immediately after receiving the ‘all clear’ from my oncologist to return to normal activities, I walked into JJF and asked for help. I was weak after an 18-month battle with cancer. I barely had any muscle mass. I lost 25 pounds, had no balance due to side effects of chemotherapy and absolutely no endurance,” Karen, a client for nearly a year, said. Karen recalls how Jesse visited with her for more than an hour listening and talking about her fitness goals. “I simply stated with tears how I wanted to feel strong and healthy again. Jesse looked straight at me and said, ‘I can help you. We can do this together.’ I knew right away I was in the right place.” One year later, Karen firmly believes JJF has given her, her life back. “I can run with my small boys and am stronger than ever before, but there’s more to it. At JJF, everyone is family. I know the trainers and they know me. I have met so many other clients and know their goals. We support and celebrate together.” Today, Karen’s mom, a breast cancer survivor, is now a JJF client. Karen’s mom suffered many of the same side effects from chemotherapy and wanted to regain her strength. Her mom is now on the road to living a stronger and healthier life. “Our relationship has always been close. Fighting cancer together made it even stronger
and now we spend most of our conversations talking about our workouts, tips and tricks to stay on track,” said Karen. There are many more special stories of families who come together to train and learn how to make healthy choices at home, restaurants and while on the run. One family, the Kennemer family, has been training with Jesse for nearly 14 years. He’s watched this family grow up – literally. Now, the Kennemer’s weekly family night consists of the parents, their grown children and spouses working out together. From adults to young students, Jesse is part of each client’s life. Josh has been with JJF for four and a half years. Josh has made
"At JJ F, it’s about giving knowledge and empowering others.”
Jesse has a big heart and so do his trainers. While clients work with one particular trainer, all JJF trainers motivate and celebrate success together. Each trainer helps make the JJF family more loving and supportive. During the transformational process, clients may struggle at times and JJF trainers help them overcome their obstacles as a team. Transformational stories abound at JJF and at the heart of each one are the trainers. As Jesse and his trainers hear these stories, they get emotional. “It’s hearing these stories that make me a better person. At JJF, it’s about giving knowledge and empowering others.” At JJF, the tagline is “No Excuses,” because everyone is given the tools to succeed, but really the tagline should read, “We’re all heart.”
tremendous progress in strength training, but he mainly shares how Jesse is a mentor. “He has mentored me and helped me mature into a confident young man. Really, the whole JJF team has been there for me throughout the years and you know you are somewhere special each time you walk in the JJF door.” Recognizing strong supportive relationships is key to any client’s success. Jesse encourages spouses and children to work out together. “We can help anyone lose weight and get fit, but true transformation occurs when a client is supported by their spouse and friends. These key relationships are critical to the emotional and psychological aspect of living a strong and healthy life. Because this is critical, we focus on including spouses and friends to join them in this journey.”

Have your Kids
Taught by PROFESSIONALS by Steve Gamel
When Cory Legner bought D-BAT Lewisville in 2011, he still had a full-time job and merely saw the new opportunity as a way to invest in his son’s love for baseball. Before he knew it, Cory's own passion for the sport was reinvigorated – and three years later, he can’t imagine doing anything different. Legner has teamed with other baseball and softball instructors who, like him, have either played at the college level or higher. They provide a friendly and inviting atmosphere where kids of all ages can learn the fundamentals of baseball and softball to play at various levels including rec, select, high school and beyond. The fully
“Our backup plan became the full-time job, and we love it,” said Legner, who owns the academy with his wife, Jen. “It all started when our oldest son reached a point where he was done listening to Dad and needed further baseball instruction so we brought him here. He loved it, and so did we. We were fortunate to have an opportunity to purchase this location and look forward to what lies ahead. D-BAT stands for Developing Beliefs, Attitudes and Traditions. Pilates Instructor Michelle
A Winner By Mark Miller
Wherever She's Located The Marcus High School graduate began dance as a young girl at Ballet Conservatory of Lewisville and then went on to perform for several years with the Texas Ballet Theatre. After retiring from dance she went on to earn a bachelor's degree in entrepreneurial business at the University of North Texas. Michelle’s dream was of owning her own fitness-related business.
When asked of the business name the 31 year old said, “I wanted something that said precise and focused like ballet dancers.” Her growing clientele voted her their favorite Pilates instructor in the Best of Denton County contest for the second straight year. “It's exciting, definitely,” she said "I didn't know if I could win it again. I have a lot of respect for all of the finalists.” She is fully certified in the Stott Pilates method a contemporary, biomechanically safe version of the traditional methods developed in the early

Premier Prospects:
A hidden gem
By Steve Gamel
PremierProspectsSoftball.com • 825 E Business SH 121 Lewisville, TX 75067
0VER 6 ACRE COMPLEX! When Ron Vaughn first came up with the idea of Premier Prospects, his vision was to create a one-of-akind facility that placed softball and baseball on an equal playing field. Too many times, he said, softball players and/ or teams needing a place to practice or train individually are stuck trying to squeeze in wherever they can since most facilities are geared predominately toward baseball. Vaughn pursued his goal, putting Premier Prospects Softball & Baseball Academy on the map. “That was one of the main reasons behind it; oftentimes softball plays second fiddle” Vaughn said. “I wanted to give these baseball and softball players the best facility, or at least the most complete facility.” In just two short years, Premier Prospects has become a preferred training site for several state and nationally-ranked select softball and baseball teams/organizations, including American Freedom Fast pitch Softball,
Train with The Pros! www.BestofDentonCounty.com
Glory Adkins and the Dallas Mustangs select baseball organization. The business has grown so much that Vaughn is even starting a Premier Prospects select baseball club. And when he said he wanted a complete facility, he meant it. The bulk of Premier Prospects’ amenities include eight indoor and six outdoor batting cages of various lengths, one indoor pitching lane, two clay softball pitching lanes, a multi-use turf infield and two regular fields. And the best part is, there is still room to grow. The facility hosts children of all ages and does everything from general practice to lessons, select showcase camps and one-on-one training. There is a scouting tower that overlooks all three infields, a media room and a 170-foot dugout. On Dec. 6th and 7th, he’ll have Rudy Jaramillo -- a batting
coach most recently with the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs -- hosting a camp. Jaramillo is already at the facility 2-3 days per week. Vaughn tries to bring in only the best instructors in DFW, including Jaramillo and Ron “PaPa Jack” Jackson along with Michael “Rookie” Boughton, Bart Alfred, Calvin Jones and Matt Derner. In softball, instructors include Rone Robinson, Keith Allen, Tim Soefje, Kristen Smith, Amber Dodson, Lynn Snodgrass, Erin JayJohn and Shawn Lynch to name a few. “Everything, really, is designed to be multipurpose,” Vaughn said. “We are in the process of putting up four, forty-foot lighting banks so teams can practice after the sun goes down.” Vaughn loves being part of the community, and is excited to see Premier Prospects gain so much attention. The funny thing is, the facility doesn’t exactly stand out when you’re driving down Business 121 in Lewisville. Vaughn said people have been driving past him for years and never knew he was there. The good news is, once they stop in they never leave.

No ordinary Health Club What makes Strada Fitness different from large health clubs and other personal training studios? “Our edge comes from our commitment to the individual and our fully equipped exercise facility that is never crowded and allows you to train in the comfort of a private, appointment-only environment.” With their third straight year of Best of Denton County awards, Strada Fitness continues to deliver professional personal training in a private, family friendly atmosphere. This year’s honors go to: Best Sports Coaching to Jake Camp, Strada’s Pilates program with Best Pilates studio, and Best Student Fitness Center. “It’s always an honor to be recognized for the hard work and effort our trainers put into their clients and the community.“ said owner Chani Overstreet. The programs at Strada Fitness accommodate people of all ages, sizes and conditions; clients exercise in a non-intimidating environment and enjoy working out with an educated personal trainer by their side. The name Jake Camp rings a bell to many of our community. Having grown up here in the Flower Mound area, Jake’s caring and enthusiastic personality lead him right into the spotlight of Best of Denton County. “Jake’s ability to connect with his clients, young and old, is an incredible attribute to his success. His after school groups have a great time while Jake builds up their confidence and strength.” said Overstreet.
www.BestofDentonCounty.com
Best Pilates Studio, lead by Carolyn Leslie is an exciting achievement. “We built a private room specifically for the Pilates program here at Strada. Now clients can improve their practice in a quieter area of the studio.” What is Pilates? “Pilates is the power of finding strength from your center that then flows outward. It will literally, not figuratively, build your body from the inside out. Meaning, you will learn to engage your inner most abdominal muscles, your entire core, while continuously moving through space.” Carolyn applies her extensive athletic background and her 5 years of Pilates experience to her client’s movements. The advantages to Pilates are many, from pain relief to functional movement. “Many people seek out Pilates to relieve neck or back pain, then fall in love with the strong, yet gentle movements they find.” says Overstreet. Strada continues to offer nutritious food options from Cedars Wood fire Grill.
“It's hormone-free and all fresh ingredients,” Overstreet said. “We're always perfecting what we've always been doing and just building on it.” “We promote a healthy lifestyle. We educate our clients on the importance of eating organically, finding health through nutrition and losing weight through nutrition in a healthy way. We do not deprive people. We teach you how to eat nutritiously because our society in general is overfed and undernourished.” Perhaps the biggest keys to Strada’s success are the continuity of its staff as nearly everyone has been with Overstreet since inception. “We have a great cohesion among our team,” she said. “We're all on the same page. And I think that's the thing people talk about when they come here. It's a positive place. It's positive from our clients to our trainers to everybody. It's just a happy place.”

Best Interior Decorating Shop When Lisa McCarty closed the doors to her almost decade old arts and crafts store in the early 1990s, it was to start a nobler calling of raising a family. As a testament to how Lisa approaches all jobs, her kids are also successful. Her eldest son Cole is an intricate part of her new endeavor, Bella Designs. Beyond her many years of being a professional in the business, Cole’s degree in theatre design from the University of Evansville brings a unique perspective to Bella Designs. In addition, Cole has worked with some of the largest theater design firms in the entertainment industry. When Lisa was asked about her business approach she responded, “I am not going to sell someone a product simply because I need to make a sale. If I do not believe that it is something that the customer will love and enjoy, then I don’t want to encourage it.” She goes on to describe her design philosophy with “the design process can take some time, and if someone is looking for a cookie cutter design then that is something that they would not find a Bella Designs. In her two decades of raising her children Lisa noticed a need for her expertise in the design world in the areas around her home. This combined with her natural desire to design led her to bring Bella Designs for fruition. She defines her top design principles as “I believe strongly in the design principle of mixing the old and new. Not every piece in the landscape of a room should be an antique, but not everything should be brand new either.” Lisa says she designs in this manner because, “ When you mix pieces you love that have a history whether they be a family heirloom or a cool antique with great new pieces, it immediately starts wa conversation.” This desire has been honed in over two decades of being a wife and mother, as well as, as a design professional and is best summed by Lisa and her family’s philosophy of, “We want people to remember how wonderfully they facebook.com/BestofDentonCounty

She has long been a believer in the value of hard work and it is this kind of attitude that makes most of her customers the repeat kind. In fact, most state that she makes the process quite easy for them. She has enjoyed building a great team environment at Complete Interior Solutions. The only competition is about who can best take care of the client’s needs. It’s so refreshing to see everybody on the same page, working toward the same goal. As anybody who is successful in running their own firm knows, there is value in establishing a good name in the community. Paula has been a member of this area for more than 27 years, which has allowed her to build up a number of relationships with different families. She has even worked through the cycle of life with many of her clients. The most gratifying part of this entire process has been to watch the growth and development of the people and their families that continue to patronize her store. It is at this point in her life that Paula enjoys the teaching aspect the most. The next generation of leaders needs a good mentor and she has stepped up to fulfill that role admirably. Ms. Kratohvil has long since known about the value of relationships and their ability to foster a good working environment. Besides the aforementioned business, Paula has also been quite active in the community, garnering a number of awards and commendations, including Rotarian and Citizen of the year and Chamber
Ambassador of the year among others. She is probably the most proud of these accomplishments since they show that others value her efforts in the public eye. This is a direct result of her upbringing in the mountains of Alabama, a place that she calls “the most beautiful place in the world.” Outside of her business interests, Ms. Kratohvil has a number of interesting hobbies including watching football – especially the Cowboys and going out with her Razor in the mud. She has stated that some

For more than 35 years, Paula has enjoyed running this type of business. She has a stated goal of making the most of each and every day. Being a creative in Retail can take a lot of energy but Paula’s a people person wouldn’t have it any other way. This extends to her family time and the nonprofits n the community. Pediatric Dental World is Giving Kids and Parents
A Reason to Smile By Steve Gamel
A trip to the dentist should be a positive experience for a child. That credo is at the heart of what Dr. Jason Clapp and his wife, Dr. Jessica Bell, do at Pediatric Dental World and they’ve taken extra care to make sure their facility looks and feels like much more than a dental office. That may sound like a tall order, but one step into Pediatric Dental World and you realize this is not your typical dental office. After spending several years in a different location in Highland Village, Clapp and Bell opened a new state-of-the-art facility three years ago off FM 2499 just north of FM 407. The entire facility was designed from the ground up with both children and their parents in mind and represents a stark shift from your traditional dental office. “Our clients are aware we place huge emphasis
Clients are drawn in for a number of reasons -- which we will get to in a bit -- but the most obvious treat as they step in the door is the large patient area with a one-of-a-kind mural that includes hundreds of floating butterflies and a kids’ play area decked out with video games and touch-screen displays. Everything is bright and colorful including the furniture, the elaborate fish tanks and the vibrant artwork on the walls. When the kids are seen by the dentists, parents can choose to sit in the adult only room complete with WiFi and refreshments or

on continuing education for ourselves and our team members has helped tremendously in creating an environment that allows us to serve our patients at such a high level.” Amanda Shaw, the office manager for Pediatric Dental World, has been in the dental industry since 1993 and couldn’t agree more with her team’s everevolving approach to education in the workplace. “Our practice places a huge emphasis on continuing education,” she said. “We are up to date and always looking for ways to be better.” MAKING A DIFFERENCE AND DEDICATED TO THE COMMUNITY Dr. Clapp will tell you that he and his wife regularly seek out feedback on how their office is doing from their clients. “We can improve our services by listening to our clients when they make suggestions on what we can do better, along with continuing to do what they like about their experience in our office, Bell said.” “Our focus is to take care of kids, but to hear that we are making a difference in someone’s life or to hear that our patients look forward to coming to the dentist... it’s special. That makes me more passionate in what I do,” stated Clapp. Because Pediatric Dental World has become such a success, the team has more of an opportunity for community involvement. According to the company website, Pediatric Dental World proudly supports many elementary and middle schools in the area. They’re also heavily involved with the American Heart Association, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Cure Starts Now and Children’s Advocacy Center. “It’s great to be in Denton County,” Bell said. “We’re grateful to the community we work and live in and for the opportunity we have to give back.”

Rebecca Butler Overcomes Challenges
to Shine as Top Pediatrician Dr. Rebecca Butler knew that she always wanted to be a doctor. She always wanted to be the one who could fix things and make people feel better. A Lubbock, Texas native, Rebecca Butler received her undergraduate education, medical degree and completed her residency at Texas Tech University. All through school, she had the desire to give back to the community and do it through medicine. Because children are sick more often than adults and require love and comfort when they’re afraid, she knew that pediatrics was her passion and where she wanted to be. After completing her residency she moved to the DFW area in search of the perfect community to make her start. Dr. Butler and Office Manager Gus Farr opened Lantana Pediatrics in February 2012 just two months after making the move into the Lantana community themselves. Together they make Lantana Pediatrics a true “medical home” for the families they serve. “It’s just fun. I get to play with kids all day. Even when kids do not feel well they are generally happy and optimistic. Days full of making children smile is very rewarding. Gus and I could not be any happier with the place we have chosen to make our home,” Dr. Butler said. Lantana Pediatrics has been a blessing in many ways for Dr. Butler. Three short months after opening the office she was diagnosed with cancer. She said, “The new practice and the amazing people I had already met kept me going strong throughout my treatment. I truly believe being a patient myself has shown me the importance of compassion in medicine and allowed me to better recognize the needs of the families I care for.” Dr. Butler is now cancer free and Lantana Pediatrics is continuing to grow steadily due to referrals from her patients and families who have just voted her Best Pediatrician in the 2014 Best of Denton County contest. With the rate at which the practice area is growing, Dr. Butler and Gus look forward to meeting many more families in the near future and expanding the practice to continue providing a comfortable medical home for those in the area. Lantana Pediatrics provides acute care and wellness checkups for children of all ages, tackles challenging behavioral issues including ADHD, and offers allergy testing and immunotherapy for children and adults.

Tittles, S2S Functional Performance
Just Keeps on
Growing
Never in Meredith Tittle's wildest dreams could she imagine growing her business enough to already be outgrowing her fourth location in the Bartonville Town Center within 10 years. But that's exactly where the 1995 Marcus High School graduate and husband Matt find themselves with their successful physical therapy and training operation. Such growth hasn't gone unnoticed by her clients and others who voted her the Best Physical Therapist and their S2S Functional Performance as Best Physical Therapy Practice in the 2014 Best of Denton County contest. “I'm just super thankful for the opportunity,” she said. “I started it because I loved it and wanted to give to people and share the knowledge we had. I never thought it would support our whole family and my husband could come on board.

Meredith S. Tittle PT, MPT
I'm just grateful to be given the opportunities we've been given.” Meredith Tittle and S2S have won 3 years in a row by maintaining a strong internal culture and hiring additional personal therapists to meet a growing demand. It is their consistent devotion to clients that has led them to be voted best, year after year. “We're just growing that side of the practice,” she said. “We focused on growing the wellness side and it's rolling in steady! Now the physical therapy side is taking off, too.” Such growth allowed Matt, a quarterback at Marcus, Texas Tech University and the Arena Football League, to leave high school teaching and football coaching to join her in 2010. It's also allowed him to grow QB1 Premier, where he serves as a private coach, mentor, and tutor to aspiring quarterbacks. Additionally, he has more time with daughters Rylie, 9, and Sadie, 5. A former personal trainer, Matt teaches the TRX training system of functional training exercises developed by Navy Seals as a way to stay in shape and exercise while in confined spaces without equipment. “What differentiates us is the ability to take a person from the front line and truly get them back to what they are unable to do again whether it's an athlete who wants to get back into a sport where he was pre-injury or offer them TRX hard core classes,” Meredith said. Another way S2S bridges the gap between wellness and rehabilitation is having the entire staff trained in the Stotts Pilates system. In addition, four of the five staff therapists have been professional or semi-professional ballerinas. Whether you're there for physical therapy or trying to keep your body as fluid as it can be, S2S will be there to provide you with the best in the business.

Grassperson Maintains
Strong Local Ties By Steve Gamel
Brian Gasperson still has the first client contract he ever signed hanging in his office. The agreement was for Gasperson -- who was 12 at the time -- to mow the lawns of 10 foreclosed homes owned by the old Southern Savings & Loan Bank in Lewisville. His mom drew up the document, and it turned out to be a good deal for a local kid who originally wanted to make enough money to buy a new bicycle. “The bank signed it, I signed it and I got that bicycle,” he said. “It was such good money that me and a buddy would walk the street, hand out hand-drawn fliers, pull a wagon and do yards. That was our thing.” It’s safe to say Grassperson Lawn Care & Landscape was born on the principle of homegrown service done the right way, one lawn at a time. Gasperson’s business -- which he formally started with his brother, Wade, 14 years ago -- has become the lawn maintenance company of choice in Denton County. He has 45 employees and 15 trucks to help service his client base, which has grown every year.
It goes beyond that, though. Having worked in corporate America for many years as a partner for Outback Steakhouse, Gasperson learned that customers want someone who will listen to them and put their needs above everything else. “When I first started doing this, people were asking me to do everything,” Gasperson said. “So I figured out what was the most important thing for my customers and we got licensed to do it. I have guys who only trim shrubs or only handle chemical application. And they’ve all been here for a long time, so we know our customers. My concern, at the end of the day, is that we are results driven in the field. We take care of our customers.” Brian feels growing up in the area not only gives him a unique view of the community, but also adds a level of trust he feels no other company can match. “I was born and raised here and my family has been here since the 1940s,” he said. “I started this from nothing and I remember it taking me two hours to mow a house by myself. Here we are, though.”

Painting-Remodeling Company is the Right Choice! By Steve Gamel
Right Choice Painting & Construction has won another award for 2014 and this time it’s Denton County’s Best Painter. That makes the twelfth 2014 award for this local family owned and operated painting and remodeling company. Jeff Adkinson, together with his wife, Jan, literally started this painting and remodeling business from scratch just more than eight years ago. The Adkinsons pride themselves on a very simplistic business plan: Don’t leave the job until the customer is happy. As Jeff says, “it’s not rocket science. Do a good job and do it right the first time.” It’s
no wonder Right Choice Painting & Construction was voted Best of Denton County. This may be the company's first year to win a BODC award, but Right Choice Painting & Construction is no stranger to recognition. The company was voted Best Small Business in 2012 by the State of Texas. That same year, the Coppell Chamber of Commerce awarded it Business of the Year. Right Choice also has won several Reader’s Choice awards in multiple

these awards, they’re not a promotion for Right Choice. They are a way for us to say thank you for allowing us to work in your homes and we are truly appreciative.”
And it’s a family business; their daughter, Jordan is the Office Manager and their son-in-law, Kyle is the Director of Operations.

“We work hard, and we work a lot,” Jan said. “We’re very customer-service oriented. We go to great lengths to provide outstanding service to each and every one of our customers and that often times sets us apart from our competition.” Jeff said that while he started the business in Coppell, the amount of work he’s getting in Denton County has grown significantly since they moved to the area. They could have up to 30 jobs going at one time and employ anywhere from 4060 people.

Putting Customers’ Needs at The Forefront By Steve Gamel
Todd Mabray knew he was doing a great job taking care of his customers when the day came that one of those same clients jokingly refused to send him some referrals. “I remember asking if he’d be willing to refer some of his friends to us and he said, ‘I’m not going to refer you to any of my friends because then you will get too big and won’t have time to take care of me,’” Mabray said with a chuckle. “They love how attentive we are and it’s exciting to have customers think so highly of us. We run our business with a small business mentality, taking personal care of each and every customer. It works, and gives us a company to be proud of.” Not bad for a guy who, just over five years ago, wasn’t even in pest control. A long-time member of the service industry, Mabray said he was traveling too much and missed being around his family. One day, he called his brother-in-law out to help him with his own termite problem. It didn’t take long for Mabray to fall in love with the idea of starting something new. Over the past five years, Todd, his wife Jennifer and longtime friend Brandon Winfree have built Mayco Pest & Termite Control on the idea that top-notch customer service should always come before the dollar and cents side of the business. Together, they built a company that utilizes their combined strengths and experience, education and skill sets.

The plan has worked. This year marks their first Best of Denton County win. Anyone who welcomes Mayco into their home feels an immediate sense of connection and trust because each technician is not only properly trained on what to look for, but attentive to what the customers may be seeing. Mabray commented, “Our technicians attend
a weekly training to stay up-to-date on everything from customer service to bug and pest education.” “We want to know what type of issues people are having,” Winfree said. “We let them know ahead of time when we are coming and when we were there, if they happened to be at work. We call customers beforehand to see if there’s anything they need us to focus on. Building a relationship with each customer is a foundational goal we have put in place since the beginning.” More than just a general pest control company, Mayco handles everything from bed bugs to rodents and termites. And rather than simply treat the conditions, they go to the source of the problem and fix it. Bugs, pests and rodents have seasons of activity and sleep. Mayco takes the time to solve the problem in any season – dormant and active. “A company is only as good as their service,” Winfree says, “Our customers are very pleased and stay loyal to Mayco. Winning Best of Denton County is an honorable award we are really excited about! We can’t say thank you enough to all who continually think ‘Mayco’ when they see a bug and count on us to keep the bugs away.”

Just Part of Rainbow International Restoration's Success Rainbow International Restoration of Denton was voted the “Best Carpet Cleaning” business in the 2014 Best of Denton County awards; however, carpet cleaning is only one of many services this family-owned business provides to home and commercial owners in Denton County. Owners Tom and April Johnson, along with their certified mitigation team and technicians, specialize in residential and commercial restoration and full reconstruction for water, fire, mold, asbestos, odor, bio hazard and smoke damage. They also provide floor installations, tile and grout cleaning, upholstery cleaning, carpet cleaning and air duct cleaning. The family business began under the leadership of Tom and his father, Gordon Johnson, in May 2013. Together, they laid the foundation of the business based on their family values and the strong Code of Values and Standards of Excellence established by Rainbow International, a subsidiary of The Dwyer Group, Inc. After Tom’s father passed away unexpectedly, his wife, April, stepped into the role of business partner and marketing manager.

The Johnsons are committed to building their business based on their commitment to service excellence and customer satisfaction. This commitment led them to earn the respect of Denton County voters, and win the Best of Denton County award. “I was thrilled when we found out we were nominated for this honor,” said April. “I was humbled to even be nominated, but to win it was very touching. We don’t just take care of client’s homes in a disaster; we take care of people and families.” The Johnsons believe that when they go into a customer’s home or business, they have a moral and ethical obligation to treat them as they would want to be treated. “Clients have entrusted us to restore their home” said April. “We take this seriously, and want to assure them that their property is in the hands of capable experts.” “Rainbow Restoration of Denton is fully licensed and certified in disaster restoration.” April explained “We work directly with insurance companies and we are always ready to offer fast, reliable, help from basic carpet cleaning needs to expert restoration services.”

The Johnsons shared that they purchased the Rainbow franchise in order take control of their family’s future while building a business they could be proud of. The couple plans to teach their 3 sons: Thomas 11, Preston 9 and Casey 8, about the business and how important a code of values and standards of excellence are in the business world. Tom, a licensed mold and asbestos remediation expert who has worked nine years in restoration, leads the daily operations at Rainbow International of Denton. April, who previously taught pre-school, works alongside her husband as co-owner and marketing manager. Tom is a Cub Scout den leader and enjoys golf. April serves on two PTA boards, attends Rotary and is active in several women’s charity groups. “We want people to know we are their neighbor and using us supports a local family business. More importantly, we appreciate the value of their dollar and give each customer the highest quality service regardless of their financial circumstance.” said April. “We are passionate about what we do and enjoy being a part of this community where we use our business to serve by helping to restore value, stability and peace of mind.”

The SCIENCE of
Texas MUSIC Want to know how two highly skilled Texas scientist buddies developed a winning formula? (Ok, we admit “scientists” is a loose term to describe these two!)
One of the scientists is an award winning Texas singer-songwriter, Jon Christopher Davis, who is not only an incredible musician, but also an avid lover of the history of Texas music. He penned and recorded the song “Lone Star Attitude”. The other one, John “Sparky” Pearson, a Congress Junior High survivor, Denton High School Bronco, Baylor University undergraduate and the University of North Texas MBA graduate, knew they needed a place of community and love to conduct their experiment and test their hypothesis: “People will increase their love for Texas music history if they can learn about it while eating great food, drinking cold beer, laughing with family and friends, sitting in a super cool space, viewing the square from the rooftop, and listening to Texas artists perform live”. The search was on for the perfect laboratory and testing area to conduct their experiment and prove their hypothesis. That’s when they landed directly across from one of the greatest assets in Denton County, the iconic and historic courthouse in downtown Denton. Next step was to break out a big ol’ bowl of Texas Entrepreneurship that read “What the hell, we’re going to die anyway!” and began adding the highly explosive ingredients to begin the testing. They took the first items from the “Great Texas Music Elements Chart” which included “Wn”-Willie Nelson, “Tb”- T-Bone Walker, S-Selena, “Gj”- George Jones, “JJ”- Janis Joplin, “Ro”- Roy Orbison, “WJ”-Waylon Jennings, “BW”-Bob Wills, “RAG”-Scott Joplin, “FF”-Freddy Fender and last, but certainly not least “BH”- Buddy Holly and began to build the formula. Then they added a little faith in the mix, and out of the smoke rose a 6X24 oil

painting worthy of any museum called “The Great Texas Supper”! Next, they collected old and neglected musical instruments and formed them into the shape of Texas. This jewel is hanging right behind the downstairs bar for all to see. They adorned posters and pictures throughout the downstairs showing the diverse musical catalogue of artists from this great state. To make sure that there is no downtime from the opportunity to learn, they added in the restrooms something they call the “bathroom classroom” which tells unique stories about the beginnings of many of Texas’ famous musical artists. After that, they built a back stairway that has a giant star window and if you pause at the second landing you look up and you realize you are standing in the Texas flag! Finally, they built the most amazing rooftop experience in North Texas complete with a beer bottle chandelier, album covered bar top, open-air roll up doors, and a magical view that extends for miles.
arugula, and pickled red onion combo), and for vegetarians, the Bohemian is a delicious mix of a brown-rice-and-black-bean patty topped with pepper jack cheese, spinach, and tomato. They needed something more that would entice the guests to smile at every bite, so they whipped up the best and most addictive Parmesan cheese fries known to mankind. They didn’t stop there, they created home-made cobblers and even had their own Honey-Whiskey Ice Cream developed to top them. It had finally come time to start and complete the experiment, so they opened. People flocked in, and they were amazed. Everything that they had hoped for and more occurred, and the results were extremely clear as they finalized their conclusion: People DO increase their love for Texas music history when they can learn about it while eating great food, drinking cold beer, laughing with family and friends, sitting in a super cool space, viewing the square from the rooftop, and listening to Texas artists perform live”. The hypothesis has proven true!
They elevated the stage over the piano key painted staircase so the backdrop to any artist playing is the beautiful courthouse directly behind them. When that was done, they sat down with their chef to create the best from scratch food you’ll find at any burger joint in the world. They created burgers honoring great Texas musicians like the Chili Willie (chili, cheddar, onion, and serrano peppers) and The Stevie (blue cheese, bacon, and hot sauce). They then created “Not Burgers” to continue their experiment on creating a fantastic experience with things like the Norah (grilled lamb, feta cheese, and tomato). Tucked away in the Unicorn Lake area of Denton across I-35E from the Denton Regional Medical Center is a place that's only been open since June but is already winning its way into customers' hearts through their stomachs. Perhaps that's why the Rising Sun Cafe was voted Best New Restaurant in the 2014 Best of Denton County contest. Owned by 21-year-old Adam Ekleberry, it serves some of the best and most reasonably-priced breakfasts and lunches around. “We were very, very excited,” Ekleberry said when he learned his cafe had won. “Seeing return customers is validation enough. It takes one thing to go once. It takes another thing to come back.” Trained in pastry and bakery at the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Academy in North Dallas, Ekleberry scouted many locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for his first restaurant before an aunt's realtor friend pointed him to the area he eventually chose.

Going the

for Quality Food
Fresco’s Mexicana isn’t a typical Mexican restaurant. Owners David Mitchell, Reagan Redus and Larry Folk have been operating restaurants together for over 30 years, including 100 Don Pablo’s restaurants. The Metroplex currently enjoys three Fresco’s: one in Watauga, one in Burleson, and the newest and largest in Highland Village, opened in October of 2013. Each restaurant differs in size and décor but shares a commitment to providing guests with Mexican cuisine that remains true to its south-of-the-border roots. Mitchell, a chef by trade and at heart, loves the challenge of “keepin’ it real,” so he spends 8-10 days per year learning and working hands-on with Mexico’s most talented chefs, from the Baja to the Yucatan. For more than 20 years he has made this annual trek to better understand the history, the culture and the culinary techniques which he then translates into the recipes which make Fresco’s such a popular destination. “I’ve gone on many trips, but each one is important to me because it refreshes my creativity,” Mitchell says. “We go to the growing fields, the plantations, the markets, renowned restaurants and private kitchens. We prep and cook, prep and cook; it’s very intensive. Only the most knowledgeable chefs can keep up.” On every trip, these chefs seek out only the finest ingredients and prepare meals from scratch -- typically in someone’s home kitchen. Mitchell says he is constantly learning and will never settle for status quo. “The Mexican food arena is vast, so I’m basically going to the actual source. It’s important to me to learn from world-famous chefs to study the history of regional Mexican recipes and how they’ve evolved. Very few chefs have the time or passion to invest in an annual trip like this. I just want to feel confident in what we’re doing with our recipes at Fresco’s.” Fresco’s menu includes the Tex-Mex dishes familiar to everyone, made special by starting fresh every day with the finest ingredients available. In addition, the kitchen prepares authentic, classical Mexican fare to delight the palate of the connoisseur as well as the guest who has an appetite for something different. “There are definitely some typical Mexican ‘comfort foods’ on our menu, but even these ‘basics’ are a cut above the subdued version of the cuisine at other restaurants,” Mitchell says. “I start with the best ingredients and recipes so that our patrons can taste for themselves the delicious difference between Fresco’s and other Mexican restaurants. I want our food to be an amazing discovery for our guests.”

cuisine that uses ingredients difficult to source except at specific times of year.
Mitchell plans to add to it using the knowledge attained during his last sojourn in Mexico. “And there’s plenty to use,” he says.
“That’s what makes him so good,” attests partner Reagan Redus. “As a team, we all
have our part to play, and he (Mitchell) is fabulous with his food and has an incredible
passion for it. He took me on one of these trips with him in 2001 and after watching him
for a little while, I saw that he knew more than many of the other chefs. And I’ve got to tell you, this trip is no walk in the park. They work your butt off.”
With Mitchell in full control of the menu and advertising for Fresco’s, Redus has turned the
Highland Village location into the largest Fresco’s yet, including an expanded patio area with some
private cabanas and an enclosed room on the back end for parties and events. It’s a lively atmosphere with a full bar and live entertainment every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
All told, these additions will allow Fresco’s in Highland Village to serve between 500-550 people.
The restaurant sits on four acres of land, and 1 1/2 acres of that are still undeveloped. This creates opportunities to add additional amenities and to expand the parking lot, Redus says.
“There are plenty of options, that’s for sure, and we know that it will be stunning when it’s all done. It’s been a lot of fun putting this together and ultimately, it’s about creating overall an outstanding experience for our customers.”
All three partners are also always looking for ways to be more involved in the community. “We understand our place in the community. We plan to play a part in supporting all the folks that
keep the community running and thriving and will do everything we can to be of service,” Mitchell says. “We love what we do and who we are, and we are excited about helping the community to create a better today and tomorrow.”
With so much hard work and great ideas being put into action since its doors opened in October 2013, Fresco’s has already endeared itself to the community. They won Best of Denton County for Family Dining and finished in the top three for Best Mexican Food and Best Place to Meet People.
“That’s pretty good company to be in,” Mitchell says. “We’re ‘right there’ after only a year in business, and we still haven’t had a chance to get our food in front of a lot of people. Once we do, I think we’ll be converting some folks to Fresco’s.”

For the Love of to customers to see if they could get a few hits and all they received were home runs. To make a long story short Allen was able to go full time catering within 6 months and left his job while Henry kept the caterings rolling in until they had no choice but to find a retail space to take care of their catering needs (legally). Within 1 year of opening on October 30th, 2010 both Pam and Kathy were able to leave their full time jobs and make Fat Cow BBQ their full time occupation. To date they have had to expand the restaurant 2 additional times and have double digit % growth month over month since the last phase of construction which was in October 2012.
They arrived unconventionally‌ Henry Wall, P a m Lockett and Allen Lockett have an extensive coffee/ break room supply B to B background in sales, product delivery and customer service and Kathy Wall with a marketing background. Their coffee customers were continuously asking them if they knew of any good catering companies. This really got the wheels turning in Henry’s head knowing that Allen is one of the best pit masters and won many competitions years prior. Henry sent out a few catering emails

Pam spends her time with her grand children and is a magnificent country dancer which she wishes she had more time to do. Kathy spends most of her off time gardening, baking, working out and loving on their dogs Tiffany and Allen (named after their partner Allen). Henry grew up in Austin, Texas, Kathy in Plano, Texas, Pam in Mabank, Texas and Allen in El Paso, Texas. They won Best of Denton 2013 for BBQ and are the #1 rated restaurant (out of 209) in Lewisville on Trip Advisor, 4.5 Stars on Yelp and one of the highest on Urbanspoon and Google Places in all of North Texas.

For the last twenty years, many Texans and Southwesterners alike have been visiting Highland Village, Texas for some of the best Italian-American steakhouse cuisine around.
by Kelly Murray
and Staff
The restaurant formerly known as "The Grotto," has recently received a beautiful remodel and a new name; "BISTECCA – An Italian Steakhouse." But the food remains as it always has been and will be: top-notch steakhouse cuisine. Executive Chef Morris Salerno opened the "The Grotto" way back in 1994 as a New American adjunct, to his highly successful, "Salerno's" in Flower Mound, Texas, known for its delicious authentic Italian cuisine. Morris has always been known to produce good cooks out of his restaurants. In 2005, two of his cooks from "The Grotto" each won the "Iron Chef of The Southwest" competition, hosted by The Texas Chefs Association. The great Chef Salerno also won many awards himself, with Team USA in the World Master Chefs Society, in competitions in France, England, Ireland, Germany, Canada, Sweden, as well as Thailand. His restaurants are always known for the delicious dinners, but many people are quickly finding out how absolutely divine his desserts are too. "BISTECCA" was featured on the hit Spike TV reality show called "Hungry Investors." The restaurant staff showed their excellent abilities and ended up winning an investment from the show. From top-to-bottom, the "BISTECCA" staff is professional, as well as happy to be a part of the business. Consumer websites, such as OpenTable.com, have dozens upon dozens of raving customer reviews of "BISTECCA," showing that impressing the customer is still their number one priority. Perhaps the most integral part of the "BISTECCA" staff is their General Manager, Stacey Miller Mahieu. She is the heartbeat of the truly fantastic staff that makes this powerhouse restaurant operate so smoothly, even maintaining their very busy Facebook page. Many restaurants are quite inactive when it comes to social media, but "BISTECCA" has a beautiful Facebook page, keeping all patrons up-to-date on events and specials. This is truly ahead of what many establishments are doing. Stacey is known to provide excellent service to all "BISTECCA" patrons, making every individual's dining experience as unique and enjoyable as the next.

Supporting Families Through Challenging Times
Mission Moms began with one mother’s vision…to show love and support to families met with challenging times. To teach our children the importance of giving, serving within their communities and acting on the kindness within their hearts. Kathryn Flores, started Mission Moms in October 2012 after seeing their children’s (then 6 and 4 yrs) excitement about toys that would be available this Christmas. Commercials and magazines flooded their innocent souls and, as children do, want everything they see. As responsible parents, Joe and Kathryn have always tried to lead them along the path of helping others, but believe it takes action to make a lifelong impact. “It’s our obligation to groom two boys into men that will lead great families and make a difference in the lives of others,” Kathryn says. With the help of adored school counselors, the brainstorming began and Mission Moms was created. The group began by orchestrating ways to teach children about serving with kindness and appreciation for their blessings. Each mission is personal, for a specific cause, with a unique focus, helping extraordinary people. “I believe our area was hungry to help. There are so many fabulous causes and ways to give back, but seeing the needs here, in our backyard, was simply shocking. We hope our missions will energize area residents, businesses and organizations to begin reaching out to those that have met challenging circumstances and give them the kindness that we have been fortunate and blessed enough to experience. We believe we will provide the assistance needed to provide positive opportunities to help others that may otherwise go unnoticed to bigger charities. I am beyond humbled at such overwhelming reception that friends and their friends and relatives of friends have shown the families within our reach.” Mission Moms currently serves nearly 400 families in Denton County with several missions throughout each year. Blessings of the Backpacks, Thanksgiving meal, Christmas gifts, Prayer Rally for a young friend in our community, Valentines for class parties, Caps and Gowns for graduating seniors and Food and Books each week throughout summers. Additionally, the group serves many smaller, more personal needs on a family-by-family basis through the school counselors. All members and their children put a lot of heart and sweat into each mission and the group has big plans to change things systematically as well. “Every child should be able to experience the innocence and joy that adolescence brings. The challenges our families face are absolutely heart-wrenching and we will not stop and aim to help and do more every year!” 108 | Best of Denton County | 2014 |
Religious & Non-Profit
This this simple vision seems to be working… throughout Denton County, there are stories of gratitude from families receiving our gifts as well as equal stories from families giving and that their children are really understanding empathy paralleled with action and what their hands and hearts are capable of. Flores often uses the analogy of a mother’s fear of her children’s hands releasing hers and growing up way too fast. However, she says she’s learning when our children’s tight grip releases, it frees both hands to help someone else. That’s what Mission Moms is all about. TEACH. SERVE. ACT.

Best Cosmetic Dentist & Dental Implant Dentist
Dr. Titensor adds, "I would like to thank my patients for their continued trust and support in nominating me for these awards. It is an honor to serve the wonderful families of this community." "Our family has been coming to Dr. Titensor for 24 years now. We drive quite a way to come to his office, but he is worth it. We have been so happy with his expert care and have recommended him to many friends. My children, who live out of state, still wait until they can come home to have him take care of their teeth. He is a perfectionist when it comes to dental care and I recommend him highly." — Diane P.
