PUBLIC LIBRARY
“Rethinking libraries as learning and community center”
Libraries are gateways to knowledge and culture and offer countless learning opportunities that can fuel economic, social, and cultural development. “Living room of the city”- Rethinking the role of libraries that offer both services of the conventional library and the ones enhanced by digital technology. The objective of the design is to create a fluid interaction between the library and its surroundings. The site shown is located in New Town, Kolkata, and is one of the fastest emerging cities of India’s latest and fast-growing planned new cities. Situated in an urban context, it caters to a wide range of individuals and its proximity to the airport and metro allows it to have a wide presence and influence on the city.

Library
The key mission is to provide a setting for encounters, meetings, and events along with the collections. Encouraging the users to be active, rather than passively receiving information. The library has to be a versatile, flexible, and adaptable public space.
Experience Hub
The design challenge was the changing content of library activities. To attract visitors, a well-functioning library must provide experiences. Four programmatic clusters were to be designed for their unique purpose, flexibility, circulation, structure, and connection to the urban context.

The Plaza is designed to cater to different communities surrounding the site. The concept of “Adda - An informal gathering/meeting point in Kolkata” is brought in to connect different age groups. The functions of the library and hubs are connected to the plaza to create a vibrant and social space that is inclusive to all.

The building’s terrace-shaped design responds to the urban context. At the same time, the planes, each housing a pedagogic discipline meet the elevators and escalators dynamically placed in the heart of the library. The atrium plays an important role not only in the routing through the library but also provide natural light. The library’s glass facade visually connects the plaza to the interior and together with two large ground floor entrances at both sides of the buildings and enabling a fluid interaction of the library with its surroundings. Perforated aluminum cladding is provided on the longer sides of the building as sunscreen.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SCHOOL Inspired by 21st-century learning principles, the Business Management School was designed as an incubator for business experiments, workshop-based learning, and unplanned synergies between students. The site, which is situated in the city center, generated a need for “individuality” through an organization around an axial scheme, thus providing a comprehensive and clear reading and at the same time a diversity of ambiances. The design demonstrates a scale similar to a public building on the outside and the inside explores the interactive nature of space by creating a humane scale apt for an engaged student community. The volume is punctured by voids, creating a rhythmic play of light and shadows which allows the building to respire.
