Located at Chengannur, Kerala, a residence for a family of five. Client's major requirement was to incoporate modernism. Boxes were played around to create a welcoming elevation along with use of jali such that there is admission of ample light into all parts of the house, illuminating the interiors to be as bright as the exterior, thereby creating a seamless experience of enjoying the various spaces and the respective moods that the spaces induce. Use of white and greys to highlight adds as a unique feature of the house.

PUBLIC LIBRARY

“Rethinking libraries as learning and community center”

Libraries are gateways to knowledge and culture and offer countless learning opportunities that can fuel economic, social, and cultural development. “Living room of the city”- Rethinking the role of libraries that offer both services of the conventional library and the ones enhanced by digital technology. The objective of the design is to create a fluid interaction between the library and its surroundings. The site shown is located in New Town, Kolkata, and is one of the fastest emerging cities of India’s latest and fast-growing planned new cities. Situated in an urban context, it caters to a wide range of individuals and its proximity to the airport and metro allows it to have a wide presence and influence on the city.

The design challenge was the changing content of library activities. To attract visitors, a well-functioning library must provide experiences. Four programmatic clusters were to be designed for their unique purpose, flexibility, circulation, structure, and connection to the urban context.

MET

The key mission is to provide a setting for encounters, meetings, and events along with the collections. Encouraging the users to be active, rather than passively receiving information. The library has to be a versatile, flexible, and adaptable public space.

The Plaza is designed to cater to different communities surrounding the site. The concept of “Adda - An informal gathering/meeting point in Kolkata” is brought in to connect different age groups. PUBLIC LIBRARY LIBRARY AND INNOVATION HUB The building’s terrace-shaped design responds to the urban context. At the same time, the planes, each housing a pedagogic discipline meet the elevators and escalators dynamically placed in the heart of the library. The atrium plays an important role not only in the routing through the library but also provide natural light. The library’s glass facade visually connects the plaza to the interior and together with two large ground floor entrances at both sides of the buildings and enabling a fluid interaction of the library with its surroundings. Perforated aluminum cladding is provided on the longer sides of the building as sunscreen.

The multifarious interior spaces merge into each other in an open plan, opening up carefully designed views. The library and innovation hub is designed to offer a unique experience on each floor such as glimpses of balconies, waffle ceilings, atria, and outdoor gardens. Across the six levels, a person will find 2,00,000 books, unique reading spaces, and study areas. Hubs for collaborations, media, gaming rooms are also provided.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SCHOOL Inspired by 21st-century learning principles, the Business Management School was designed as an incubator for business experiments, workshop-based learning, and unplanned synergies between students. The site, which is situated in the city center, generated a need for “individuality” through an organization around an axial scheme, thus providing a comprehensive and clear reading and at the same time a diversity of ambiances. The design demonstrates a scale similar to a public building on the outside and the inside explores the interactive nature of space by creating a humane scale apt for an engaged student community. The volume is punctured by voids, creating a rhythmic play of light and shadows which allows the building to respire.

Crossflow of natural ventilation and shading allows for outdoor and indoor comfort

Shield from solar radiation - A combination of horizontal and vertical shading devices are designed to reduce direct heat gain

Courtyards and atriums with skylights are designed which maintain indoor comfort through stack effect

Well lit corridors and classrooms limit the use of artificial lighting

Deciduous trees for landscape

Terracotta rain-screen cladding is designed for the facades. It uses terracotta panels which is low heat-absorbing material and the presence of a ventilated gap in the cladding system helps in thermal insulation

Permeable paving for pedestrian path enable infiltration of stormwater runoff

INTERPRETATION CENTRE The Interpretation Center situated in Vallakkadavu Trivandrum, Kerala aims at conveying the history, culture, and ecological importance to people, especially children. The center is designed to cater to both young and adults. The plot is situated in the town core, on a location with high visibility, and inserted in an urban park system that stimulates and evokes the importance of the place. The Center is designed along with a public square to connect the neighborhood. The square establishes a new type of space for people, creating spaces that work day to day for individuals, and which are capable of being programmed in many ways for events of many different sizes.
