FOREWORD As this fantastic tourism year comes to a close and another exciting one commences in 2020, we take a look back at some of our successful accomplishments as a tourism fraternity. We also acknowledge numerous activities, activations, and events that have and continue to put Kenya on the global map as a leading tourism destination. I recently launched the National Convention Bureau (NCB) at the Ministry’s boardroom. This was done after the recent appointment of Ms. Jacinta Nzioka as the National Coordinator of the Bureau. The NCB is a state agency charged with promoting Kenya as a preferred destination for business events, and its primary purpose is to increase the number of events, conferences, and meetings held in Kenya. The Sector is expected to grow revenues into the destination through its backward linkage to other areas such as transport, hospitality, agriculture, financial services, among others. Through this Bureau, we expect an increase in international conferences and business meetings in the future. In a bid to boost the tourism sector and encourage local tourism, the National Treasury and the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife established the Tourism Promotion Fund. This fund is aimed at providing funds to support the development, promotion, and branding of the tourism sector. It is also expected to fund tourism implementing agencies: State Agencies, Ministries, and State Department implementing tourism development, promotion, and branding projects and programs. These agencies shall be expected to apply for funds, and the funding is issued as per guidelines of the body. We are excited to promote the Western tourism circuit, which includes places such as Kisumu, Kakamega, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Homa Bay, Kericho, Kisii, Migori, Nandi, Nyamira, Siaya, Trans Nzoia, and Vihiga. This promotion will change the narrative that Kenya only has safari and beach destinations. Kisumu is also set to host the 2021 Africities summit. This will be a significant boost to the economy of Kenya, and this will show that Western Kenya is ready for the surge of tourists visiting the region. Mama Ngina Waterfront was officially opened during the Mashujaa day celebration in October. The seaside public park has been transformed into an integrated urban tourist attraction site. This transformation includes landscaping and paving the waterfront with concrete blocks, construction of an amphitheatre, the Kilindini Cultural Centre, ablution blocks, and two main gates. Tourists visiting the park will attend cultural exhibitions,

shop, dine at al fresco restaurants and cafes or relax at the expansive site. During the 9th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo, Kenya attracted 139 new buyers. It is an indication of the growing interest of the destination by people in the tourism business across the world. Finally, we must also acknowledge the constant efforts made by crucial tourism partners who have and proudly stand with us to showcase Kenya as a world-class destination. Go Places™ is one such partner, and they have worked to shine a light on our incredible destinations, hospitality, and service on various platforms. On behalf of myself and the Ministry of Tourism Kenya, I wish all the readers an exciting festive season ahead, a fabulous Christmas and a prosperous 2020. Enjoy the read and Tembea Kenya. HON. FOREWORD KENYA CONTINUES TO CEMENT HER POSITION AS A SAFARI DESTINATION As we usher in the festive season, we have every reason to celebrate that the destination has continued to build and project our brand positively. Last month, Kenya continued to cement herself as the global safari destination champion after scooping the prestigious 2019 World leading safari destination by World Travel Awards (WTA) event held on 28/11/2019 in Muscat, Oman. Kenya topped as a home to World leading Safari lodge destination won by Mahali Mzuri, crowning the consistency the destination has had in this category having previously won the award five times in the last seven years; 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

KTB will continue to identify tourism market needs and trends so as to advise tourism stakeholders accordingly to ensure that we scale our tourism to even greater heights.

In the Africa category, Kenya won Africa’s leading destination award as well as the leading destination management company while Nairobi was voted Africa’s leading business travel destination.

As we usher in the festive season with these positive narratives about the destination, it is also important to note that hoteliers have already reported good bookings especially from the domestic market.

Kenya’s tourism marketing agency Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) was voted Africa’s leading tourist board while the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) was voted Africa’s leading meeting conference destination.

The domestic segment has continued to cushion the sector during low seasons and its performance is on the increase with the current performance showing a 9.03 % growth.

Diani won Africa’s leading beach destination while Kenya Airways received the Africa leading Business and Economy class airline award. These good tidings are a testament to the fact that tourists and business people across the globe prefer Kenya to other destinations because of its diverse products and experience offerings.

Domestic bed nights for the year 2018 were estimated at 3,974,243, up from 3,645,243 compared to 2017 data. As I conclude, let me take this to thank all our partners both in the public and private sector for their dedication and unwavering contribution to position Kenya as a world class destination.

The increased preference by visitors into the country is proof that Kenya’s travel and hospitality industry is definitely on the right track.

Positive narratives on destination through platforms such as Go Places is our clarion call to every one as we encourage our visitors to travel Kenya and Live the Magic!

These global awards re-affirm Kenya’s potential to compete with other destination to offer diverse preference and choices to meet the expectation of a visitor.

DR . BETTY RADIER CEO - KENYA TOURISM BOARD (KTB)

Most importantly I want to thank our visitors who have continually patronized our products and experiences, making Kenya their destination of choice. As a destination marketing agency KTB will continue in its mandate to market Kenya at Local, National, Regional and international levels as a premier tourist destination;

FOREWORD Greetings and welcome to another exciting season As we approach the close of 2019 and usher in a new year, the tourism industry, yet again, has risen-up and managed to stay on track. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) wish to thank the Kenya Government, the Kenya tourism private sector, the Counties, our overseas suppliers and our media partners for the continued confidence in and support for the sector. The MagicalKenya Travel Expo (MKTE) 2019 held in October is one of the destination marketing activities carried out to ensure that we work towards achieving our goals and to continue to raise Kenya’s brand equity as a leading tourism destination. MKTE continues to be the leading ‘tourism –only’ travel trade expo in this region, attracting travel professionals and media from Africa, Europe, North America, Asia and the Asia Pacific region. It provides product and service providers with an important platform to showcase what they have to offer directly to the hosted buyers. It also gives us an opportunity to engage with the visiting and local media and share with them the MagicalKenya story. KTB recently attended the Internationale Tourismus Borse Asia (ITB Asia) in Singapore in a bid to boost Asia tourism to Kenya. The number of tourists visiting Kenya from the Asian market has been growing, but we are keen to see these grow even more. We project that the numbers will rise by 2025 based on the estimated 90 million households in Asia expected to become part of the global travelling class. We also expect to see an increase in arrivals from the India market based on the launch of direct flights between Mumbai and Nairobi by Air India on 27 November 2019. Kenya will therefore be accessible from India on our national carrier, Kenya Airways (KQ), and Air India. We will continue to position ourselves in the Asian markets to ensure that we gain from the projected growth in outbound travel. We will continue to diversify our tourism portfolio to suit new tourist frontiers. Kenya tourist arrivals in 2018 hit the 2 million mark, earning over 157 billion from the sector. This accounts for over 15 per-cent of total exports. Travel and tourism in Kenya have grown by 5.6 per cent to contribute Ksh790 billion and 1.1 million jobs to the Kenyan economy. It has surpassed

16 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

the average global growth rate of 3.9 per cent and the Sub-Saharan Africa average growth rate of 3.3 per cent. We are confident that we will close the year with good travel and tourism numbers. On behalf of the Kenya Tourism Board, I would like to wish all Go Places™ readers a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. During this festive period, make sure that you go out and fully experience the unmatched splendour of MagicalKenya. I wish all readers an enjoyable read as they continue to discover the beauty of our country.

Jimi Kariuki Chairman, Kenyan Tourism Board

FOREWORD Optimism, resilience for Brand Kenya as the year comes to an end It is all celebration galore for the Kenya brand as we come to the end of the year. The year has been fruitful and the country has indeed made positive strides in several sectors of development and the future looks bright. On the exports front, Kenya exported goods worth Sh11.13 billion to China in 2018, up from Sh9.9 billion in 2017 according to the Economic Survey 2019 released by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. The Report also shows that Kenya’s economy expanded by 6.3 percent in 2018, the highest since 8.4 percent in 2010, beating majority of projections which ranged between 5.8 and 6.1 percent, mainly due to increased agricultural production. The data also shows that the value of horticultural exports increased from Sh113.3 billion in 2017 to Sh124.3 billion in 2018 due to an increase in exports of cut flowers and avocados. Kenya also became the first African nation to export avocados to the Asian nation which has a market of over 1.4 billion people. This was as a result of a trade deal signed when President Kenyatta met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing earlier in the year. Once the trade deal is fully implemented, it is estimated that the Chinese market will absorb over 40 percent of Kenya’s avocado produce, making it one of the largest importers of the fruit. Other famous export destinations of Kenyan avocado include Europe and the US.

On the sporting front, Kenya’s fortunes have continued to shine too on the global front. Who can forget last month’s famous INEOS 159 in Vienna, where Kenya’s greatest marathoner of all time Eliud Kipchoge brought the world to a standstill by becoming the first man on earth to run a full marathon under 2 hours? This alone meant a lot for Kenya in terms of country positioning in the global arena. Kenya also walks tall globally with all the major marathon titles under its belt. This includes the 2019 Chicago Marathon where Kenya’s Brigid Kosgey (Women) and Lawrence Cherono (Men) are the current record title holders. The country also scooped 2nd position globally in the recently concluded IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha. All these are strong country pluses worth celebrations. It is a pointer to the country’s economic resilience amid common developmental challenges.

For Kenya, this means growth in the export markets and diversification of export products from the initial tea, coffee and flowers.

As Brand.KE (Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency), which is a merger between Exports Promotion Council and Brand Kenya Board, we endeavor to collaborate more with other agencies to contribute significantly to the country’s overall Vision 2030.

The country has also performed well on the ease of doing business index based on the latest annual World Bank rating. The 2020 Ease of Doing Business Report, which ranks 190 countries globally, indicated that Kenya improved by 5 places from last year’s 61 to position 56.

MR. PETER K. BIWOTT, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Brand.KE

The Report ranked Kenya as among countries that delivered the highest number of reforms, making it the third most competitive economy in Africa after Mauritius (13th) and Rwanda (38). Some of the reforms include enacting several laws such as the Companies Act, the Insolvency Act, Business Registration Act, Movable Property Act and automation of various processes. What does this mean for the country? More investments, more trade, more opportunities for wealth creation, and a stronger country brand that is globally competitive.

VIEWS FROM THE HILLS OF SHIMBA THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Beyond the serene sandy beaches of Mombasa, elephants and sable antelopes leisurely patrol the gently rolling and one of the largest coastal rain forest of Shimba Hills National Reserve in Kwale County. This reserve has the last breeding herd of the rare sable antelope in Kenya. The vanishing rain forest antelopes are on the priority list of nationally endangered species in Kenya and the organization is keen on seeing that a national conservation strategy is developed to guide all efforts to conserve the species for posterity. Sable antelopes are highly matriarchal in their social structure and congregate in herds of 15 to 20 individuals and the most dominant female in the herd becomes their leader. Other than fascination by all the wildlife teeming the hills and valleys of the picturesque Shimba Hills National Park, are you the adrenaline filled outdoor adventure junkie? Always on the go, up for some adventure? Worry not, we got you this long holiday season! Immerse your senses in the quiet of nature as you flex your muscles hiking on the trails of nature on the hills of Shimba. A pair of binoculars and a great camera will come in handy because tens of birds and butterflies will color your trail. Take a minute, identify a couple of those and make memories as you tread on. A wide variety of birds are recorded during the spring migration. There are more than 600 elephants in the park and a fenced elephant corridor links the park to the elephant sanctuary at Mwaluganje Forest. The sanctuary was established to reduce human wildlife conflicts and shares a boundary with Shimba Hills National Reserve thus providing the elephants with a migration corridor.

Not a problem. Self-catering accommodation in the KWS’s Sable Cottages located right in the heart of the National Reserve will play host to you and your adventure buddies. Great times for friends or family bonding live here. If you want it a bit wild, why not opt for camping or picnicking? Camping is an exceptional way of experiencing the African moorlands, savannah, bush, forest and mountainous terrains. A night under the stars in the comfort of your tent sounds unpractical and far-fetched but it’s actually doable. Deep in the wild, clean crisp air hangs around, a great ambience, the peace and quiet of the environment is just stunning. If you had this combination, would you still ask for more? The croak, trumpet, growl and bellow of a myriad wild animals will most definitely lull you to sleep but we doubt you will have a moment of shut eye because here, the wild never sleeps. We hope you feel delighted, awed and above all mind blown by the Shimba Hills experience. See you on the hills! As we come to the end of this busy and fruitful year 2019, we as National Museums of Kenya would like to thank all Go Places readers for their continued support. We have succeeded in encouraging the local people to experience our natural and cultural heritage by visiting our museums, sites and monuments that are spread across the country. In this issue, we feature more interesting facts about our sites across the country. We highlight the Sacred Mijikenda Kayas. The Kayas are forested or wooded sites situated in the Coastal plains and hills of Kenya regarded as sacred by the coastal Mijikenda community. The Sacred Mijikenda Kayas became the fourth in Kenya to make to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This year saw remarkable achievements including the restoration of the Fort Jesus National Monument sea wall that had been washed away by the sea waves. We are extremely thankful to our parent Ministry and the National Government for extending funding towards the completion of this project. We would like to remind you to pen down all the Museums in the country, Sites and

NEWS BITS AERO CLUB OF EAST AFRICA THE HOME TO AVIATION IN KENYA SINCE 1927 The Aero Club of Kenya was founded on 31 July 1927 by 24 pilots and enthusiasts. In March 1928, under its first President, Lt. Col. A.C.E. Marsh, the Club became the official representative of the Royal Aero Club and on 18 May 1928 its name was changed to the Aero Club of East Africa. That same year the Club was called upon to advise the Kenya Government on the site selection of the new Nairobi Aerodrome (now Wilson Airport) to replace the old Ngong Landing Field at Dagoretti. The ground was levelled and was first used on 19 February 1929 by an RAF flight of four Fairey III F’s on their way to Cape Town from Cairo. The Clubhouse was built, and Lord Wakefield, a wealthy patron, sent over a Gipsy Moth from England. Membership had grown to 209 and, by 1933, 25 of the members had earned their flying licences. The thirties were glory years, not only because the Club played an important role in opening up the country, but also because its members took their place amongst the world’s aviation pioneers: Beryl Markham, the first person to fly across the Atlantic from East to West; Tom Campbell Black, who won the London to Melbourne Air Race in 1934. Transforming Lives Through Travel

Travel With Sinja

T

he feeling of making a positive impact as a volunteer in Africa and exploring the continent inspired me so much that I found an opportunity through my university to go for an internship to Ghana. My plan was scheduled, but during the preparation, I started having a few doubts. Questions like would I manage or if it was the right decision to travel that far as a young lady. Such questions filled me with fear, and I became anxious about my upcoming journey. However, I was curious at the same time. A sense of calmness settled within me when I realised that other students had gone before me to participate in

the same internship. My first international flight had a lot of mishaps. In Strasbourg, I missed my flight to Accra, Ghana. I lost all my bags that had all my personal belongings in Amsterdam, and this further fuelled my fear.

if people would understand me with my broken English. I was going to be in Kenya for six months, and I feared the thought of being lonely. I would be away from all the things that were familiar to me, and I would miss my family. Being in Kenya was a dream for me, so I took that leap of faith and travelled alone. I signed up for a volunteer program where I had someone taking care of all my needs and questions.

Travelling to Ghana changed me completely. I experienced a free African lifestyle, a free spirit and mentality in Ghana, which I had never known before. The internship was over, but back home in Germany, I knew wanted to explore the continent further. It was tough for me to focus on my studies just to continue with my “normal lifestyle. I even ended my seven-year relationship because I knew my future would be somewhere in Africa. The same week after finalising my exams at university, I started my next adventure: six months in Kenya as a solo female traveller.

I was in Kenya for only two months, and at that point, I knew I would be extending my stay. I eventually started the organisation, Jiamini CBO, to safeguard rights of vulnerable children in Kenya. I did not have any professional background in social work or community development, so setting up the organisation challenged me. I wanted to make a difference in the community I had grown to love, and with the help of a local team and our fundraising team in Germany, we managed to start operations. We now run a daycare centre in Thika, Kenya that caters to more than 20 orphans.

Language was the most significant issue when I travelled to Kenya, and I started to wonder

Germany stopped feeling like

home to me, and Kenya was calling me. This was a different realisation, but I started looking for ways to settle in Kenya. I believed I could make a positive impact in Kenya and change the lives of many vulnerable children and especially my own. Nothing could hold me back, and I decided to take that risk once again. After moving to Kenya, running a non-profitable organisation for orphans, falling in love with a Kenyan, getting married and divorced in 1 year, I needed a change of scenery. I moved to Nairobi, and this was a significant change for me as a foreigner. I was starting over in a city that I wasn’t familiar with, and the scariest part was that I had no income. My aim for being on the continent was to make a difference; this brought Travel with Sinja to life. It was not easy, and it took time, but after a few weeks of daily meditation and listening to motivational speeches, I could see a positive change in my life. I started eating healthier, taking better care of myself, only surrounding myself with people I love, and who inspire me. I even travelled for a 10-day silent meditation experience in South Africa for one specific method of meditation where you learn on how to purify and calm your mind. Meditation and mindfulness taught me how to be aware

of your senses and how to be grateful for ever y single moment in this life. Mindfulness opened my mind, body and soul to live in the moment and to be in the now. What I realised is that many visitors come to Kenya to relax and re-energise themselves and to take a holiday they truly deser ve. But the reality looks different. Instead of rejuvenating, their mind is busy day and night thinking about their job, their kids or family they have left at home or things they have to do before the day ends.

MIJIKENDA KAYAS

64 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

T

he Mijikenda Kaya Forests comprise of 11 separate forest sites spread over some 200km along the Coast, containing the remains of numerous fortified villages, known as Kayas of the Mijikenda people. The Sacred Mijikenda Kayas were inscribed on the UNECSO World Heritage List in 2008 becoming the fourth Kenyan site to grace the World Heritage List. The 10 sites inscribed are: • •

• • • • •

Kaya Giriama (Fungo) The Rabai Kayas (Mudzimu vya, Bomu and Fimboni) Kaya Kambe Kaya Jibana Kaya Ribe Kaya Kauma The Duruma Kayas (Gandini Mtswakara)

The Kayas are forested or wooded sites situated in the Coastal plains and hills of Kenya regarded as sacred by the coastal Mijikenda community. They are residual areas of once extensive and diverse lowland forest and are small in size, ranging in area from 10 ha to 400 hectares. To date, over 50 Kayas have been identified in the contiguous districts of Kwale, Msambweni, Kinango, Kaloleni, Kilifi and Malindi. The Mijikenda people are dominant ethnic community in the coastal region south of the Tana who speak closely related Bantu dialects. They are A- Giriama, A-Digo, A- Chonyi, A-Ribe, A-Kambe, A- Kauma, A-Jibana.

The Sacred Mijikenda Kayas are an outstanding and unique example of how the collective attitudes and beliefs of a rural society have shaped or sculpted a landscape over time in response to prevailing needs. The Kayas are a living legacy of the people’s history, culture and religion. Because of the forests’ protected status, they are repositories of biodiversity, and a home to rare species of plants and animals. THE ORAL HISTORY Mijikenda oral history relates that the ancestors of the Mijikenda, who were then one people, lived in a place called Singwaya, believed to be north of Tana River and south of Juba River in Somalia. However, due to conflicts with other communities, they migrated south in waves into the present Kenya coastal region by early 16th Century onwards.

They established themselves in fortified villages within forests, known as Kayas. ‘Kaya’ in fact means ‘home’ in most Mijikenda dialects. Within the forest, the Mijikenda placed the powerful ‘fingo’ or talisman which they brought from Singwaya as protection for the community. The sites were inhabited for many generations but gradually people began to leave the forest villages especially in the 19th Century as conditions became more secure. Kenya has a total of seven (7) World Heritage Sites namely; Lamu town for its unique culture, Mt. Kenya for its undisturbed natural look, Sibiloi National Park in the Rift Valley for both cultural and natural significance, Fort Jesus National Monument and Thimlich Ohinga Archaeological site.

What You Should Know About

REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS If this is your first time buying an investment property, you might want to get a professional legal opinion. There’s a lot of paperwork involved in real estate transactions. And it could be difficult for anyone, whether beginner or experienced, to go through them and understand all the legal terms.

66 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

The real estate market can be somewhat unpredictable across the globe. That uncertainty can make one skeptical or excited because one is never sure what they will get. Learning the things that could go wrong during a real estate transaction is vital because it will ensure that you do not make the same mistake again in your future purchases. Paperwork is the backbone of any real estate transaction, especially if it is done professionally, and there are a lot of things that could wrong in this sector. Misprints or misspelling in this aspect could take hours or days to rectify. Therefore, upon getting your document, you need to go through it with a fine-tooth comb with a lawyer if it is possible before the deadline for the resubmission. It may seem like a minute thing, but putting your signature on a document with errors could end up costing you your property in the future. You should also be very careful if the seller or the buyer is unable to produce the required paperwork. You might not look into the fine details then end up with extra fees that you had not anticipated, only sign a document when you fully understand the terms and conditions. During your real estate transaction, do your due diligence to avoid getting falsified information; this applies to both the buyer and the seller. Finding out after the sale has been made that the person you were dealing with shared falsified details is frustrating. They might even disappear by the time you realize it. Before committing, do background checks and see the reviews that the person you want to do business with is truthful. This applies to online real estate transactions, as well. It is easy to note when someone is dodgy hence trust your gut as well. To avoid being in a situation where over three people have bought the same parcel of land from someone who isn’t even the owner of the property.

For the buyer finding out that the seller misrepresented facts about the property that you intended to purchase something like house defects could also be a big issue. Even if you are doing your transaction online, insist on viewing the property physically to ensure that you are not being duped. Pictures only tell half the story. If you choose to get the property without seeing it first, it will be a long dance before you can get out of the agreement once you put your stamp of approval. The seller might also face some issues with the buyer, and this is usually about financing. If you depend on the bank to do your real estate transactions and they cause a delay in disseminating the funds to the seller, it will be a big issue if the seller has done his part. Find an alternative mode of payment as you inquire with the bank to find the cause of the delay. Indecisiveness is also a big issue when it comes to real estate transactions, and this affects both the buyer and the seller. Both parties might decide to change their mind at the last minute and opt out of the deal. The seller might decide that you are not the person they would like to sell their property to, or the buyer might decide that they do not want to buy from you. This is tough, but you have to brave through it. During a business transaction, you are never sure whether the client will invest in what you have to offer, but you keep making your pitch. This same concept applies to real estate transactions. Just remember that it pays to be informed as you go about your purchases.

GETTING OUT OF THOSE GREENSIDE TRAPS

GOLF FOR BEGINNERS

When golfers try to help the ball out, they hang back on the right foot and straighten the left leg. That causes them to hit too far behind the ball or skull it on the upswing. Two things that will definitely help would be:

1. Set up with the ball position in line with your front foot and keep the knees soft. (Pictured below). This will encourage good posture and weight distribution.

By Rizwan Charania Head Teaching Professional & TPI Golf Fitness Coach at the RC Golf Academy

2. Move towards the target when hitting the ball to ensure the club arrives with speed. Here's an exercise for grooving the basic motion out of green side bunkers. With or without a club, take your setup in a bunker, hold a golf ball in your right hand and toss the ball towards the ag. You'll see you have to turn your body through, otherwise your right hand won't reach far enough to get the ball to travel the correct line or distance. (pictured below)

Chimamanda Ngozi

Adichie is a Nigerian writer. In 2008, she was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant. Adichie has been described as “the most prominent” of a “procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone authors who is succeeding in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature. Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus (2003), was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction and was awarded the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book in 2005.

T

his is Chimamanda’s fourth book and it discusses race in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The story is told through the eyes of young lovers Ifemelu and Obinze. They leave Nigeria to explore other opportunities outside the country.

“I have natural kinky hair. Worn in cornrows, Afros, braids. No, it’s not political. No, I am not an artist or poet or singer. Not an earth mother either. I just don’t want relaxers in my hair...By the way, can we ban Afro wigs at Halloween? Afro is not a costume, for God’s sake.”

Ifemelu goes to pursue her post-graduate education in Philadelphia and years later Obinze goes to Britain to also pursue his education but ends up becoming an illegal immigrant. Adichie shows the predicaments of Africans in the Diaspora but she also talks about areas of the Nigerian culture that need to be reevaluated. Adichie highlights the difference between cultures, she points out peoples’ pity when they realize you are from Africa. “Ifemelu wanted, suddenly and desperately, to be from the country of people who gave and not those who received, to be one of those who had and could, therefore, bask in the grace of having given, to be among those who could afford copious pity and empathy.”

New York Times accredits Adichie for balancing high literary intentions with broad social critique. Americanah will be gracing your screens soon with Lupita Ny’ongo as one of the stars. This is a book of great impact and importance in different communities.

Adichie is not afraid to bring up certain controversial issues, those that others keep silent about. She explores the ideals different people have when it comes to natural hair.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian writer.

ATHLETICS NEWS HISTORY MADE AS ELIUD KIPCHOGE BECOMES FIRST HUMAN TO BREAK THE TWO-HOUR MARATHON BARRIER Eliud Kipchoge is among five finalists for the Male World Athlete 2019 award. The Kenyan, 35, became the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours at in the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria in October. Kipchoge’s 1:59:40 marathon time is not recognised as the official world record because it was not in open competition and he used a team of rotating pacemakers. The Olympic champion, who holds the official marathon world record of 2:01:39 and is a four-time London Marathon winner, compared the feat to be the first man on the moon. “This shows no-one is limited,” said Kipchoge. With a leading pace car beaming green lasers on to the road to indicate the required pace of 2:50 per kilometre, Kipchoge never went slower than 2:52. To break the mark, he had to run 100m in 17.08 seconds 422 times in a row at a speed of 21.1kph (13.1 mph). Kipchoge was assisted by a team of 42 pacemakers, including Olympic 1500m champion Matthew Centrowitz, Olympic 5,000m silver medallist Paul Chelimo and the Ingebrigtsen brothers Jakob, Filip and Henrik. They rotated in and out, running in formation around Kipchoge, with former 1500m and 5,000m world champion Bernard Lagat anchoring the final leg. The attempt was funded by petrochemicals company INEOS - owned by Britain’s richest man, Sir Jim Ratcliffe - which also sponsors the cycling team of the same name.

The Greek, making his debut at the event aged just 21, is the youngest winner of the season-ending championships since Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt in 2001 and claims prize money of just over £2m. The Greek is only the seventh man to win the season finale on his first appearance and the sixth-youngest winner in history. “Things were great this year, and I beat some top-ranked players this gave me confidence, and I’ve won matches in Grand Slams and Masters 1000s. I think I can do well in the Slams.” Tsitsipas said.

RUGBY WORLD CUP (RUGBY)

South Africa broke English hearts with a ruthless display of power rugby to seize their third Rugby World Cup. Those were iconic moments for a nation besotted with rugby. When Siya Kolisi lifted the William Webb Ellis trophy aloft as the first black man to captain the Springboks, they will have the final part of a triptych that will endure forever in the country’s collective memory. “The country has gone through some bad times, and we have over the last two years, but our challenge is to make South African rugby strong for the next six or seven years” South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus.

Tommy Fleetwood beat Marcus Kinhult in a play-off to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City in South Africa. It was the 28-year-old’s first victory since January 2018 and moved him up to second in the Race to Dubai. Fleetwood’s 65 was three shots better than anyone else on Sunday and in the play-off, he produced a magnificent up-and-down to ensure his par beat Kinhult’s bogey to take home the most significant monetary prize on the European Tour - $2.5m (KES 250m). He is now second behind Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger in the Race to Dubai standings, with only one event to go - the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
