FOREWORD As we begin the final quarter of 2018, we are glad to inform you that the 3rd Chapter of the Chefs Delight™ Awards has commenced. This year we have close to 100 establishments that have been nominated to participate for the top Culinary and Bar & Mixology Awards. The programme will run for a minimum period of three months and culminate towards the Gala Awards Night. Many of you may not know this but the concept of this truly Kenyan initiative and awards programme, was born many years ago. As a chef by profession myself and an avid diner too, I and many of my colleagues in the industry saw the need to create a quality benchmark in the industry that would help our Kenyan restaurants and chefs achieve international status, that would one day put Kenya on the global map as a leading culinary destination. When I handed down this project to my teams, they came up with something truly phenomenal. For the very first time we were going to develop a quality enhancing awards programme that did not put a panel of judges at the centre of the grading process, rather and more effectively we would give you the diner, the paying customer, the ability to anonymously grade your ‘quality of dining experience’ and ‘quality of service received’ every time you dined in a restaurant. This would be the basis on which Restaurant & Chef teams would win awards because let’s face it who better to judge you than your paying customer. Over the years the programme has evolved, using the latest in technology. The customer feedback and review process that began through a manual system in 2012 to a mobile app in 2015 and now in 2018 to an online system based on a proprietary technology developed by our Google certified UK based partner. Customers will be able to access this online system using either their smart phones, tablets, laptop or even desktop to leave their feedback and reviews. This programme is a rigorous exercise and it would have been possible without support and participation of the Chefs Delight™ Awards nominated restaurants who are passionate about providing high quality of experience and service to their clients and value their customer’s feedback to constantly improve their standards. Secondly the customers who dine in these restaurants and provide their true opinion of their experience that allow their favourite restaurant to understand their needs through their valuable
feedback and finally our sponsors who have put their trust in the Chefs Delight™ programme by providing endorsement, supports and guidance, we appreciate them. Finally I encourage all restaurants to fully participate in the programme and any restaurant that have not been nominated and would like to participate, to get in touch with the organisers for next year. Furthermore we urge diners to leave your feedback every time you wine & dine at Chefs Delight™ nominated restaurants and provide a true opinion of your experience, as every time your experience may be different. Diner will get a chance to win fabulous prizes for leaving their opinion in our initiative “Vote & Win with Chefs Delight™” In the coming issues of the Go Places Magazine we will have a dedicate section for the Chefs Delight™ Awards. On behalf of myself and the Chefs Delight™ Awards Team, I wish all the readers an exciting season and Happy Wine & Dine experiences. ‘SOMAK CELEBRATES 50+ YEARS OF EXCELLENCE’ AN INTERVIEW WITH THE CHAIRMAN MR. SURESH SOFAT Mr. Sofat you are widely considered one of the very first, a pioneer if you will, in offering ‘East African Safari Experiences & Travel’ throughout the region. Where did your deeprooted passion for travel in Africa stem from? I would say my deep-rooted passion and love for travel first began when I joined the aviation industry with East African Airways, upon completion of my education. Soon thereafter my interest & enthusiasm for aviation led me to join the United Arab Airlines, popularly known as Egypt Air today. During this period the British government placed conditions on nationals living within Kenya, to either stay within the country or move back to the UK on 28th February 1968. The demand and need for affordable flights to and from the UK quickly grew, as most of the previous generations who had setup base in Kenya stayed, whilst the younger generations moved back to further their education and business interests. By this time I had a well-established network within the aviation industry, and aimed to provide a cost-effective solution for families to travel back and forth. This led to the formation of Somak, the pioneers of VFR travel (Visiting Friends & Relatives) in Kenya via chartered aircrafts. My constant fascination with the wilderness, safari experiences and the natural beauty of Kenya was something I also always wanted share with the world. Hence the Somak group was formed which includes Somak Safaris, Somak Travel & Somak Holidays; a perfect match.
8 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
Although your company needs little or no introduction amongst your industry peers, and virtually anyone who ‘actively’ buys travel experiences within the East African region… In your own words describe what the Somak group does? The Somak group is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning destination management company (DMC) & tour operator with over 50+ years of experience. We specialize in VFR travel and organizing a wide variety of holiday, leisure and corporate travel experiences including; tailor-made and packaged safaris, beach holidays, romantic excursions & honeymoons, school trips, group incentives and much more. We serve tens of thousands of travellers annually offering an extensive array of itineraries and accommodation facilities to suit every interest & budget, with a network that spans throughout East Africa, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa just to name a few. An entrepreneur in every sense of the word, your company has grown from strength-tostrength now handling in excess of 30,000+ leisure travellers coming into and travelling around the African continent each year. Tell us about some of your successes and hurdles you’ve faced along the way? We are humbled to have had numerous successes and continued growth year-on-year within the Somak group. With our superior knowledge about this exotic yet complicated continent, our ability to curate truly unforgettable travel experiences, our strong network & work ethic, and ofcourse our outstanding personalized guest services has led us to win countless international accolades & awards. However as with every industry, there are ups and downs that can’t be avoided. Some of these hurdles have included the Likoni clashes, post-election squirmishes in 2007, terror-related insecurities and being labelled as an Ebola high-risk zone by the international media (which we are definitely not) have all led to an unstable yet resilient tourism landscape.
To be successful within the tourism industry, whatever service you may offer, first and foremost you must love, appreciate and enjoy what you do.
Somak Safaris retains its stellar reputation as one of the very best DMC’s on the African continent, yet many in the travel industry say there has been a major shift in the way tour & travel businesses operate. Given the constantly changing landscapes of global travel in Africa, what is the best advice you would impart onto others within the same industry? To be successful within the tourism industry, whatever service you may offer, first and foremost you must love, appreciate and enjoy what you do. Remember you are working with people. Work with passion, commitment, honesty & integrity, and offer a quality and memorable range of experiences to your customers. They are the best judge of your services, and if they’re happy the word travels. In-turn through this process it all eventually comes full circle, and you will most definitely get more referrals and more businesses. A hearty congratulations, Somak is now celebrating 50+ Years of Excellence since its inception in 1968. How does that make you feel as the founder of the company, and what does it take in this day and age to run a global entity of such size and stature (as compared to 50 years ago)? As the Chairman and founders (with my beautiful wife Sadhana) of the company we are immensely proud of our teams, both past and present, for the hard work, determination, dedication, clear focus as a unit, and tenacity to be the very best in what we do. To your second question, to run a company of this size requires a strong company structure and great systems in place to be able to consistently deal with any type of enquiry, opportunity or eventuality.
What would you say are some of the most important characteristics that your HR teams, or you personally look out for, in potential employees looking to join the Somak group? Individuals who display clear understanding and overall view of the industry, have strong knowledge, a deep appreciation and are passionate about Kenya as a destination, its flora, fauna & wildlife, and are able to work as part of a team. We have cultivated a culture where we provide equal opportunity to both genders and every team member has the freedom to bring to the table new ideas and concepts. They must be honest, work with integrity and always be committed to ensuring our clientele are well looked after and enjoy themselves during their trips & excursions. As with all successful companies it is extremely important to put the right foundations, structures and individuals in place to allow for continuous growth throughout the organization. Name some of these individuals and the roles they play. The Somak Group is well-heeled with solid structures and systems in place, as well as the right individuals and teams to carry forth and ensure the continuous growth & development of our brand globally. I would like to pay special tribute to my sons Ash Sofat & Anil Sofat who are currently based at our UK offices, and Ms. Bushra Sultan our MD based here in Kenya. All business aside, what does Mr. Suresh Sofat like to do in his free time? In my free time I enjoy watching live tennis, cricket and football matches, and although many here may not know this I am a regular at the Lords Cricket Ground in London - where we also have an Executive Match Day Box.

FOREWORD Tourism is Kenya’s jewel. Kenya’s position as a leading tourism not only on the African continent, but also on the global scale continues to improve season after season. It is our desire as a destination to continuously monitor and adapt to the dynamic market needs in order to accord our visitors an unforgettable experience, as well as increase their visitation and stay in the country. Kenya is looking up to receiving more visitors in 2018 given reduced political activities and a conducive business environment prevailing after the general election last year. The positive outlook can already be seen in the past six months. In the 2017/18 financial year, combined arrivals for July to June closed at 1,488,370 compared to 1,393,568 in 2016/17, illustrating a growth of 6.8%. Our domestic segment recorded a growth of 1.1% as indicated in the domestic bed nights’ figure that closed at 3.67 million bed nights compared to 3.64 million in 2016/17. Tourism receipts for the period under review posted a 9.9% growth at Kshs117.6 Billion, up from KShs107 Billion recorded in 2016/17.
Finally, on behalf of myself and the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife, I wish you all an exciting October – November ahead. Come sample Magical Kenya and Let us Tembea Kenya together! HON. NAJIB BALALA, EGH, CABINET SECRETARY MINISTRY FOR TOURISM & WILDLIFE
We are optimistic that tourists will continue to visit Kenya as their preferred holiday or business destination, as we adopt more strategies aimed at realizing the full potential of the sector. In keeping with that aspiration, Kenya will this year showcase its authentic tourism offering to the world through an unprecedented week of tourism promotion -the inaugural Kenya Tourism Festival (KTF) 2018 scheduled to run from 27th September to 5th October 2018. This is in line with our strategic objective of enhancing visitor experience, as well as increasing their stay in the country. Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) 2018 is one of Africa’s premier tourism trade fairs, bringing on board hosted buyers from across the globe, including travel agents, tour operators, hoteliers and trade media from Kenya’s key tourism source markets such as Europe, Africa, Asia and Americas, among others.
REPUBLIC OF KENYA
MINISTRY OF TOURISM & WILDLIFE
We appreciate all exhibitors, hosted buyers, media representatives and trade in making MKTE 2018 a success as we collectively strive to take our tourism sector to greater heights!

FOREWORD Greetings and welcome to Magical Kenya, the land of exquisite safari, adventure and scenic natural beauty. With yet another exciting new season set to commence in October and November 2018, we are pleased to note that Kenya’s position as a leading tourism destination on the African continent continues to grow and our rich diverse attractions keep drawing in travellers from around the world. Our marketing efforts, in collaboration with the tourism private sector, have seen robust growth in arrivals, in particular from the emerging source markets in Africa and Asia. It is also very encouraging to see the continued positive contributions of the domestic market to the bed occupancies at the various hotels, resorts and lodges/ camps around the Country. With the launch in September of direct Flights from Nairobi to Mombasa by Silverstone Air, more Kenyans are heading to the coastal region and we anticipate higher numbers in domestic travel as the year continues. I am pleased to announce that tourism arrivals for the financial year July 2017/June 18 grew by 6.8% to record 1,488,370 visitors compared to 1,393,568 in July 2016/ June 17. Tourism receipts for the period July 2017/June 18 posted a 9.9% growth at Kshs 117.6 Billion, up from KSh.107 Billion recorded in July 2016/June 17. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has received positive feedback from numerous tourism stakeholders, including tour operators and hotel/lodge/camp operators reporting a steady growth in domestic travel in the period July 2017/June 18 over July 2016/June 17. This is encouraging performance for the sector. We are optimistic at recording greater numbers given the number of upcoming events being hosted in Kenya this year. These include the SKAL World Congress to be held in Mombasa from 17-21 October. The event will bring together over 300 delegates from across the globe. The Blue Economy Summit which will be held in Nairobi from 2628 November is expected to attract over 5000 delegates. Following the announcement between His Excellency the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, and the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has now achieved Last Point of Departure status. This allows JKIA to facilitate direct flights between Kenya and the USA. Kenya’s National Carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) will now fly directly to the USA from 28 October 2018, presenting new opportunities for Kenyans in Travel, Trade and Commerce sectors.

The largest East Africa tourism fair dubbed Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) 2018 is scheduled to take place in Nairobi from 3-5 October. This will be the 8th year that this event will be taking place. The fair organized by KTB brings together tourism professionals from Kenya and from over 35 countries that represent Kenya’s key tourism source markets. These markets include Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. The event will take place at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) in Nairobi. Finally, as KTB celebrates it 21st Anniversary this year, we are confident that through our continued partnerships and collaboration with all tourism stakeholders, our dynamic destination marketing activities will continue to raise the profile of Magical Kenya and thus lead to increased international tourism visitor arrivals as well as increased domestic tourism travel. On behalf of myself and the Kenya Tourism Board, I wish all the readers of Go Places an exciting new season of travel ahead. Enjoy the read. Jimi Kariuki Chairman, Kenyan Tourism Board

FOREWORD Greetings and Welcome to Magical Kenya!
Kenya is now the home of the Twin Migration, the destination that offers visitors a chance to see two naturally iconic and spectacular tourism attractions; the annual migration of the wildebeest into Maasai Mara and the annual migration of humpback whales into Watamu, Malindi. Whale watching as a tourism activity in Kenya received a boost in mid August when Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala launched the Twin Migration campaign to promote the wildebeest migration and the humpback whale migration. The humpback whale migration has now created a great opportunity for tourists coming to Kenya to have a whole new safari and coast experience. The natural phenomenon has added one more unique and unforgettable experience to Kenya’s coastal tourism circuit. Humpback whale watching along Kenya’s coast is now occupying a more prominent place in Kenya’s coastal tourism calendar. Kenya’s global profile rose even higher with the record breaking performance of Eliud Kipchoge who smashed the World Marathon record by 78 seconds in the Berlin Marathon 2018 to clock 2 hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds. Acclaimed as the greatest marathon runner yet, Kipchoge has dominated marathon racing since making his debut in Hamburg in 2013 after a successful track career that saw him win world gold and silver (2003, 2007) in the 5000m and Olympic silver and bronze (2008, 2004) over the same distance. Eliud, continues to carry the Kenyan flag with pride. We celebrate Eliud’s achievements! During the third quarter of 2018, several domestic airlines have launched daily flights connecting travelers from Kisumu to Nairobi and Mombasa. This has provided efficient, low-cost and convenient travel to the Kenyan Coast and to Western Kenya. This attests to the fact that domestic tourism is growing. During this time of the year when bed occupancy would usually oscillate between 40 and 50 percent, reports now show the rate go as high as 80 percent. The tourism private sector acknowledged the collective gains made over time. The greatest of these was that the country is experiencing the best season in tourism since 2012. This strongly affirmed the sector’s continued progress in reclaiming the number one position as a contributor to Kenya’s foreign currency earnings. The fourth and last quarter of the year looks even more exciting, starting off with the inaugural Kenya Tourism

Festival 2018 between September 27th and October 5th. Among the activities slated to take place during the Festival include the Chef’s Delights Awards, Africa Hotel Investment Forum 2018 (AHIF) from 2nd to 4th October, as well as the 8th Magical Kenya Tourism Expo 2018 (MKTE) from 3rd to 5th October with over 180 exhibitors from all across East and Central Africa. The festival will be a fusion of Kenya’s rich cultural heritage and technology which is a major driver of modern travel. We will showcase Kenya as an experiential destination. Please save the dates for this week-long experience. Between 17th and 21st October, Mombasa will host the 79th Skal World Congress 2018 that will bring over 500 delegates to the country. On 28th October, national carrier, Kenya Airways will take to the air with its first direct flight to the United States of America, Kenya’s top and best performing tourism source market. The direct flight will definitely be a major boost to Kenya’s tourism sector and the economy as a whole. I urge you to take hold of the exciting season ahead. As always, enjoy the read and live the magic of Kenya!
DR . BETTY RADIER CEO - KENYA TOURISM BOARD (KTB)
FOREWORD TIME FOR KENYA’S PRODUCTS TO EXCEL IN THE GLOBAL MARKETS Kenya has made great strides transforming its manufacturing sector. From time immemorial, the story of Kenya’s exports market space has been that of just a few key commodities that mainly comprise of raw agricultural products, against tones of imports entering the country’s borders from across the world. The result, a gaping trade deficit that stood at USD 11 billion in 2017, 33 per cent higher than in 2016. Imports rose by 20.49 per cent to USD17.5 billion during the same period in 2017, which continues to be a big threat to locally manufactured goods. The top export destinations for Kenya are the United States (USD 524M), the Netherlands (USD 467M), Uganda (USD441M), Pakistan (USD 394M) and the United Kingdom (USD 386M). It is a fact that Kenya is currently the largest exporter of apparels under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) with about KES 35 billion worth of exports as of 2017. But it is also a fact that the country is still way far behind in terms of overall streamlined local and global trade. There have been combined efforts by key stakeholders in local and international trade to maximize profitability for the country. The recently unveiled Export Development and Promotion Strategy as well as the Kenya National Africa Growth & Opportunity Act (AGOA) 2018-2023 Strategy during the 2nd Annual Kenya Trade Week by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives are some of the initiatives launched with hopes that they will cause a rapid annual growth in exports by an average of 25 per cent per year in the next four years. It is also vital to note that the Strategy focuses on other critical sectors (aside from agriculture), whose products have high export potential and which will enable the country achieve set targets. The particular sectors considered in the strategy include apparel, home décor and personal accessories, processed and specialty foods including nuts, flowers, coffee, tea and fresh fruits and vegetables.
The Board launched a “Made in Kenya” identity Mark to strengthen Kenya’s products globally as well as spur an export-driven manufacturing agenda as Kenya seeks to position itself as the industrial hub of Africa. The initiative is aimed at creating a strong brand proposition for Kenyan-made goods centered on quality and authenticity and an enhanced competitiveness for locally made products. The Mark is a signal to the world that Kenyan products come from the best minds, the best hands, and the best manufacturing capability on the continent of Africa. The Board therefore developed this Mark to enable consumers locally and abroad to identify a product as Kenyan and associate it with quality and authenticity; create a strong brand proposition for Kenyan-made products and services. The Mark will help in position Kenya as the industrial hub for Africa. This is part of the Brand Kenya Boards’ mandate of identifying and distinguishing local products, services and concepts, while promoting them to encourage economic transformation. The Made in Kenya Mark plays a key role in ensuring that as a country we are proud of what we generate, consume and take to the world. It is a new dawn for the local manufacturing industry, a chance for our authentic products to re-align and stand out on local, regional and global markets.
Ag. CEO, Brand Kenya Board Ms Floice Mukabana
But for Kenya to achieve its envisioned position on local and global markets and widen its footprints, more need to be done to enhance value proposition. Brand Kenya Board is among key stakeholders increasing value proposition for Kenyan products, as part of marketing (branding) and re-positioning Kenyan goods to the world.

COUNTRY ROADS… ANYONE? What comes to mind when you think of a Kenyan wildlife safari? Herds of African elephants, buffalos, lions and rhinos. Basically the big five. Right? Tonnes of wild animals leisurely patrolling the vast acres of open grasslands, shrub lands and densely forested areas of Kenya Wildlife Service Parks and Reserves. Large and small, animals are in their hundreds. Your job is to keep your senses alert, your camera handy ready to make merry and memories. Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks form the largest chunk of protected ecosystems in Kenya. Christened theatre of the wild, the unchartered Tsavo terrain will reward you with more than you had bargained for. From a tangle of the dense undergrowth of the semi-arid desert, dust red elephants leisurely take charge of the vast parks. Tsavo West National Park is famous for the man eater lions. The lions, to date carry a bizarre history long after they terrorized, maimed and killed construction workers of the KenyaUganda Railway in 1898. The history of the massive parks will linger for a long time to come. ‘Amboseli’ is a Maasai word meaning ‘Salty Dust’. The Maasai community largely live around the picturesque Amboseli National Park. Its abundance in wildlife and the snowcapped Mt. Kilimanjaro will turn any avid photographer into its ‘slave’. Perfect for a typical Kenyan safari, rope in all your buddies who love the outdoors and savor the wild in all her splendor. No need to be in so much hurry. Stay in the wild, explore and create lasting memories. Check in into the KWS self-catering bandas and guest houses. Perched in the heart of the expansive jungle, peace and quiet lives here. The quiet environment will afford you great times as you bond with your friends or family over barbeque in the wild. A vital catchment area for the spectacular Mzima Springs and the Tsavo and Galana Rivers, the ‘Green Hills of Africa’, Chyulu Hills National is a rugged wilderness still raw with volcanic eruptions that date back to hundreds of years. The remnant volcanic ash

enables trapping of rain water from the moistureladen winds. The rain soaks into the sponge-like ash and percolates down until it hits the impervious bedrock and begins an underground journey to Mzima Springs in Tsavo West National Park. Chyulu is also a vital dispersal area for animals that live in the Tsavo and Amboseli ecosystems. Lazily sprawling seamlessly and ebbing out into the horizon, the Chyulu hills await the hiking enthusiast. Great for the Kenyan camper who loves the outdoors in their dimensions, the cave explorer will have a time of his life exploring the Kisula lava tube caves, said to be one of the longest lava tube caves in the world. THE FLYING DOCTORS’ SOCIETY – GO PLACES™ RECOMMENDED CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION The Flying Doctors’ Society of Africa (FDSA) is a charitable organization set up in 1971 to raise funds to enhance medical outreach and access to medical emergency services in Africa. We offer short term (2 weeks to 2 months) and annual membership covering the whole of East Africa. As a member of FDSA you are entitled to free evacuation service in case of a life threatening emergency that would necessitate the use of the Flying Doctors to transport you to a medical facility in Nairobi. We channel all our unutilized membership subscriptions to support our Obstetric Fistula programme. Obstetric Fistula (or Vesico-Vaginal fistula –VVF) is a devastating condition that manifests itself as an abnormal communication between the urinary bladder and vagina, which leads to uncontrolled, continuous leakage of urine and/or faecal matter (for RVF cases). This year, we partnered with Yetu Initiative, a partnership project between the Aga Khan Foundation and USAID that is geared towards strengthening our local fundraising capacity as well as mobilization of fistula beneficiaries. Together with our partners; Safaricom Foundation and Freedom from Fistula Foundation, we have restored dignity to women and mothers in a number of counties in Kenya e.g Kisii, Embu and others. We strive to reduce the effects of an untreated fistula to the women such as stigma, discrimination, isolation, poverty, psychological disorder and family breakdown enabling the women to contribute to community’s growth. With us, its people that matter! NEWS BITS TEKWA CULTURAL ENTERPRISES GO PLACES™ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED INTERNATIONAL TOUR COMPANY Allow me to introduce myself: I am Therese Schaerer and originate from Zurich in Switzerland but I have lived in Kenya for the last 30 years. I hold a PhD in Nigerian History which shows my early interest in Africa, its History and its Cultures. Even before moving to Kenya I travelled widely on the African Continent (Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana). When I came to Nairobi in 1988 I joined the History Department of Kenyatta University. Later I taught at University of Nairobi as well as at the German School. During all these years I have explored most parts of beautiful Kenya and while I still love to go on a traditional game safari I – being a historian – have become fascinated with the rich but unfortunately little known historical and cultural aspects of this land. And it is these facets of Kenya I would like to introduce you – the readers of Go Places – to. It is a unique opportunity for me to show you, the travel enthusiasts, a very different Kenya, to talk to you about the great cultural variety this country holds and hopefully challenge you to join me in one of my cultural tours to East Turkana, Western Kenya and along the Swahili Coast. SKYWARD EXPRESS TO LAUNCH ITS 24HR CALL CENTRE AND NEW OFFICES Over the recent past, SKYWARD EXPRESS has witnessed tremendous growth in terms of passenger numbers and the acquisition of its new offices and hangar at Wilson Airport. This, we owe it to the fact that we enjoy the support of our customers, travel agents, and business partners. SKYWARD EXPRESS was the pioneer airline to offer schedule flights into Eldoret International Airport from Wilson Airport. Later, we opened up the Mombasa – Lamu route becoming the first airline to offer scheduled flights into Mombasa from Wilson Airport and the first to offer direct flights between Mombasa and Lamu. The coastal routes of Mombasa and Lamu have seen tremendous growth in seat capacity as well as reduced travel time for passengers connecting between the two islands over the past two years. Subject to regulatory approval, SKYWARD EXPRESS is committed to increasing its route base to the coastal and western destinations of Kenya in the near future. With this in mind, taking cognizance of the fact that there has been an increase in demand of our services, we are pleased to announce that, SKYWARD EXPRESS will offer 24hr operational support to customers in a bid to ensure increased customer satisfaction. CULTURAL TOURS TO WESTERN KENYA TEKWA’s tour to Western Kenya takes you through rolling tea plantations (Kericho), equatorial forests (Kakamega Forest), along the shores of the largest lake in Africa (Lake Victoria) and to the home of Barack Obama’s family (Alego/Kogelo). You also get a chance to interact with different ethnic groups, some of them of Bantu origin like the Luhya, others of Nilotic background like the Luo, the Kalenjin and the Teso. You will visit Thimlich Ohinga, a most impressive 15th century stone settlement, a smaller version of the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, which has acquired the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site only this year. A visit to Alego/Kogelo will take you to the Dr Auma Obama Foundation, where you will participate in the activities of the Sauti Kuu (Strong Voices) family. Due to excellent development of road infrastructure in recent years, travelling has become easy and you can get accommodation in good 3 – 4 star hotels. You will be accompanied by a professional tour guide who is specialized in African and Kenyan History. She has travelled through Kenya since the 1990s and she speaks English, German, French and Spanish.

CULTURAL TOURS TO NORTHERN KENYA
THE CRADLE OF MANKIND (EAST TURKANA) Most of Northern Kenya is arid country, scorched and roasting under the equatorial sun and it can go for months without rain. The mountains that rise from the deserts are however, often luxuriantly forested. Safaris in Northern Kenya tend to use these areas as more comfortable oasis refuge away from the shadeless plains. You will get in touch with people still following their traditions as pastoralists, fishermen or hunters and gatherers. Infrastructure is often poor, thus we use a Mercedes truck which is well equiped for the rough terrain. You will drive along the largest desert lake in the world (Lake Turkana), cross a salt desert (Chalbi desert), as well as stone and sand deserts and endless plains. To top this, you will move through that very same area where 3 million years ago our ancestors roamed around, namely the “Cradle of Mankind. Where available you will stay in 3 to 4 star lodges otherwise in simple but always clean bandas. No camping! If not in lodges our cook will take care of your meals. He will surprise you with his cooking skills even under not very favourable conditions. We have a professional tour guide specialized in African and Kenyan History. She has traveled to the North since the early 1990s and speaks English, German, French and Spanish.

The BIG CATS of East Africa There is only one law of the wild in East Africa’s game parks & reserves, the commanding law of the jungle as we know it, ‘only the fittest survive’… Predators rule and their unsuspecting prey, however big or small, are always on the look out and on constant alert, as one wrong move could mean certain death! East Africa’s BIG CATS primarily hunt on the vast savannahs where their prey is more easily available, but if you watch closely over the many watering holes and rivers, there also seems to be another underlining law - one of respect, as animals whether herbivore or carnivore, come together to peacefully quench their thirst (well apart from the crocodiles ofcourse…). Witnessing a kill on your safari game drives is a truly exhilarating experience and awakens your most innate of primal instincts, and is not so cruel if you think about it, because it would happen even if you weren’t there. Welcome to the law of the jungle, welcome to Africa, where the BIG CATS rule!! The Lion Popularly known as the ‘king of the wild’ the Simba or Lion is the largest of the big cats in Africa, with some males weighing upto 250kg!! They have a lifespan between 10 to 14 years in the wild and males are easily distinguishable from females by their beautiful manes. Lions are unusually social compared to other big cats, with a pride consisting of related females, offspring and a small number of males. Lions are apex predators but also expert scavengers too, where lionesses in the pride generally hunt. They are nocturnal animals that mostly sleep during the day and are active during the night.
The Leopard The African Leopard has relatively short legs as compared to the other big cats, a large elongated and muscular body and can weigh up to 100kg. Easily distinguishable from other cats by its rosette shaped spots (as compared to the single spots of a cheetah). Leopards are opportunistic hunters that have a broad diet, and strike in short bursts with lightning fast speed and great strength. They often carry their prey up trees to avoid other predators or scavengers.
72 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
The Cheetah The elegant and aerodynamic cheetah is characterized by its slender body, deep chest, spotted coat, small rounded head, black tearlike streaks on the face, long thin legs and a long spotted tail (no spots on the underbelly of the cheetah). Cheetah mainly prey upon antelopes and gazelles and can reach average speeds of upto 64km/h during their hunts.
The Serval Cat Also known as the wild cat, the Serval Cat is the smallest of the big cats with a body slightly larger than a domestic cat. It is characterized by a small head, large ears and a golden-yellow to buff coat spotted and striped in black. A solitary animal, servals have little social interaction during the mating season. They prey on rodents, small birds, frogs, insects and reptiles, and some types of grass.

La Dolce Vita Gets A Fresh New Look A tavola non s'invecchia is a popular Tuscan saying that means “you never grow old at the table”, and this inspirational quote couldn’t capture the dining experiences and ambience more beautifully, than at the newly refurbished and ever-popular La Dolce Vita Ristorante.
THE HISTORY La Dolce Vita was founded in 2001 by Master Chef Riccardo Fiora, an authentic Tuscan who moved to Kenya in the 90’s, bringing with him his passion, zeal, commitment and culinary astuteness for fresh authentic Italian cuisine. With his unwavering talent in the kitchen the restaurant soon began to get noticed, with revellers from all over the country lining up just to experience what the chef from Tuscany would put on the menu next. After his passing away, his heirs carry on the same family tradition today, having further reinforced La Dolce Vita’s standing as one of the most revered dining establishments in the region. Under the direction of their manager, chef and skilled culinary teams, Chef Ricardo’s memory lives on - bringing to the table the true authentic tastes & flavours of Italy right in the heart of Muthaiga (Nairobi).
THE AMBIENCE
76 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
La Dolce Vita’s décor symbolizes a fresh inviting new look coupled with warm & welcoming blue interiors, Italian tiling and white wash walls adorned with captivating pictures and paintings of Italy, and the Oscar-winning 1960 film La Dolce Vita (written and directed by Federico Fellini) to create a charming and alluring ambience like no other. Ideally located at the Muthaiga Shopping Centre, the award-winning eatery offers both bright and airy interiors and an elegant outdoor dining terrace too, ensuring guests a pleasurable experience whatever their mood.
THE MENU
The menus at La Dolce Vita impeccably capture the true spirit of Italy at every turn, offering a colourful play on both authentic and signature dishes, profound tastes & textures, and scintillating flavours like no other restaurant in the city. There are two menu types, the Main À La Carte Menu featuring an almost endless array of Starters (Recommended: Carpaccio di Bresaola, Classici crostini Toscani, Cozze e Vongole con Crostino all’Aglio), Pastas (Recommended: Tagliatelle Dolce Vita, Gnocchi di Patate alla Genovese, Tagliolini al Tartufo), Soups (Recommended: Crema di Verdure con Zoccoletti, Crema di Pomodoro, Pasta e Fagioli), Main Dishes (Recommended: Filetto di Cernia alla Mugnaia, Petto di Pollo alla Boscaiolam, Tagliata alle erbe aromatiche) and Desserts (Recommended: Millefoglie Dolce Vita, Crema Fiorentina con Lamponi, Fagottino al Cioccolato). Traverse the culinary landscapes of Italy with the restaurants’ outstanding Regional Menu which include the Tuscany, Liguria, Puglia, Lazio, Veneto & Sicilia regions. Enjoy! BOOK REVIEW
THE POWER OF BROKE
How Empty Pockets, a Tight Budget, and a Hunger for Success Can Become Your Greatest Competitive Advantage
GENRE: SELF-HELP BOOK Daymond John has been practicing the power of broke ever since he started selling his home-sewn t-shirts on the streets of Queens. With a $40 budget, Daymond had to strategize out-of-the-box ways to promote his products. Luckily, desperation breeds innovation, and so he hatched an idea for a creative campaign that eventually launched the FUBU brand into a $6 billion dollar global phenomenon. But it might not have happened if he hadn’t started out broke - with nothing but hope and a ferocious drive to succeed by any means possible. Here, the FUBU founder and star of ABC’s Shark Tank shows that, far from being a liability, broke can actually be your greatest competitive advantage as an entrepreneur. Why? Because starting a business from broke forces you to think more creatively. It forces you to use your resources more efficiently. It forces you to connect with your customers more authentically, and market your ideas more imaginatively. It forces you to be true to yourself, stay laser focused on your goals, and come up with those innovative solutions required to make a meaningful mark. Drawing his own experiences as an entrepreneur and branding consultant, peeks behind-the scenes from the set of Shark Tank, and stories of dozens of other entrepreneurs who have hustled their way to wealth, John shows how we can all leverage the power of broke to phenomenal success. You’ll meet: · Steve Aoki, the electronic dance music (EDM) deejay who managed to parlay a series of $100 gigs into becoming a global superstar who has redefined the music industry · Gigi Butler, a cleaning lady from Nashville who built cupcake empire on the back of a family recipe, her maxed out credit cards, and a heaping dose of faith · 11-year old Shark Tank guest Mo Bridges who stitched together a winning clothing line with just his grandma’s sewing machine, a stash of loose fabric, and his unique sartorial flair When your back is up against the wall, your bank account is empty, and creativity and passion are the only resources you can afford, success is your only option. Here you’ll learn how to tap into that Power of Broke to scrape, hustle, and dream your way to the top.
Daymond Garfield John born on February 23, 1969 is an American businessman, investor, television personality, author, and motivational speaker. He is best known as the founder, president, and CEO of FUBU, and appears as an investor on the ABC reality television series Shark Tank. Based in New York City, John is the founder of The Shark Group.

G LF FOR BEGINNERS
-By Rizwan CharaniaHead Teaching Professional & TPI Golf Fitness Coach at the RC Golf Academy
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHAFT FOR YOUR DRIVER The Driver is probably the most frequently upgraded club in your bag and definitely the most expensive. Yet we constantly spend huge amounts without really knowing what to buy. The shaft of your Driver is what I like to call “the Engine” as it determines the ball flight based on your swing speed. I am sure you don’t go out to buy a car without knowing all the specs first do you? These days, golf clubs (especially Drivers) are available with a number of shafts that will fit your swing speed and ball flight. A regular or stiff shaft is not just regular or stiff anymore, there are different variations to help you achieve the best possible combination to improve consistency.
ASK YOURSELF THESE 5 QUESTIONS BEFORE PURCHASING YOUR NEXT DRIVER: 1. What is my Swing speed? Generally, slower swing speeds require lighter more flexible shafts to assist with getting more power and flight. 2. What is the correct loft on the driver for me? Again, someone who swings slower may find it difficult to get the ball airborne so a Driver with 12 degrees or more loft would be ideal. 3. Is a driver better because it is more expensive? Definitely not. 4. What length of Shaft is correct for me? 5. How forgiving is the Driver? Most golf store websites will have a forgiveness rating. We will never hit the ball out the middle every time so it is important to look for a forgiving head design.

KENYA’S
RICH COASTAL HERITAGE
When we speak of holidays in Kenya, one of the most popular places to be visited is the Kenyan coast. Do you know your heritage sites at the coast? Read on to discover… FORT JESUS MUSEUM AND WORLD HERITAGE SITE The Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1593-1596 to the designs of Giovanni Battista Cairati to protect the port of Mombasa, is one of the most outstanding and well preserved examples of 16th Portuguese military fortification and a landmark in the history of this type of construction. The Fort’s layout and form reflected the Renaissance ideal that perfect proportions and geometric harmony are to be found in the human body. Visit the most popular historic site in Mombasa town and discover more about this old town’s history. MALINDI MUSEUM The building is a charming old double – storey structure with a roof terrace covered with roof tiles and is situated along the seafront, on
an excellent site, some few meters from Malindi jetty and Fish Market. It is a veranda building, a building type of the 19th century with features identical to the Malindi District Commissioner?s Building. The building was bought from the Bohra community for 2,000 English Pounds after a longer period of occupation by the Medical Department who had used the building to serve as the Malindi Native Civil Hospital. The exact date of construction is not known but when Thomas Alfree was buying the property from the Bohra community, as discussed in his undated autobiography, even the oldest Bohra who was then more than ninety years old could not remember when it was built.

MNARANI, KILIFI The site was first occupied in the early 14th century but the first mosque; the Great Mosque was not built until AD 1425. Enlargements were undertaken soon thereafter, followed by major reconstruction efforts later in the 15th century following the collapse of the earlier building. means in Swahili “the large house of the slave”. Within this area four mosques, a tomb and four houses have survived in recognizable condition. These houses include the House of the Cylinder, The House of the Kitchen, The House of the Many Pools, which had three phases, and the Great Mosque. The inhabitants of this town were mainly Muslims as evidence by a number of ruined mosques. GEDI RUINS Gedi ruins are the remains of a Swahili town, typical of most towns along the East African Coast. It traces its origin in the twelfth century but was rebuilt with new town walls in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This rebuilding is connected with the emigration of many citizens of Kilwa to Mombasa, Malindi and other places along the coast. With its numerous inhabitants, the town became wealthy and it reached its peak in the fifteenth century. This enormous wealth is evidenced by the presence of numerous ruins,
comprising of a conglomeration of mosques; a magnificent palace and houses all nestled in 45 acres ofprimeval forest. But in the first half of the seventeenth century the last families left the town.
UNDERWATER ARCHEOLOGY Kenya’s effort to preserve its underwater cultural heritage is gaining international recognition as key bilateral partners expressed interest to join in the preservation.
LAMU WORLD HERITAGE SITE Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, retaining its traditional functions. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors. Lamu has hosted major Muslim religious festivals since the 19th century, and has become a significant centre for the study of Islamic and Swahili cultures.
The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) has made strides with the successful design of a maritime archaeological program for the study of heritage as well as a database of all shipwrecks and other resources in the country.
OTHER HERITAGE SITES TO VISIT INCLUDE: • Lamu Fort • German Post Office • Swahili House • Takwa Ruins • Siyu Fort

Although the program is in its infancy, Kenya has benefited immensely from underwater archaeology hubs like China. Kenya has developed capacities in maritime and underwater cultural heritage through the training of archaeologists and establishment of an underwater artifact conservation lab.
