TOURISM AND WILDLIFE CABINET SECRETARY Magical Kenya is delighted to host the 13th edition of the Magical Kenya Tourism Expo (MKTE) and the 3rd edition of the East African Regional Travel Expo (EARTE) in Nairobi. The East Africa Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE), now in its third cycle, represents the spirit of East African unity and our shared ambition as member states. The inaugural Regional Tourism Expo was hosted by the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) in October 2021 in Arusha, while the second edition was hosted by the Republic of Burundi in September 2022 in Bujumbura. The annual Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) on the other hand continues to be the region’s flagship travel trade fair that brings together domestic, regional, and international tour operators, travel agents, destination agencies and various other players in the tourism trade to network and facilitate tourism business The twin expos provide the regions tourism stakeholders an opportunity to connect and market their various offerings and experiences. Both expos have exponentially grown to attain continental status and our aim is to now move to the next level ad make them global. MKTE remains a crucial platform for the tourism trade, facilitating one-on-one interactions among industry players. Over the years, it has attracted international buyers from priority countries, contributing significantly to the development of our tourism industry and elevating the destination’s global profile. As we eagerly anticipate hosting these expos, it is essential to reflect on the past, extracting insights to build a more robust industry. The travel landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by global trends and influenced by factors such as the Covid-19 pandemic, which has prioritized health and safety for travelers.

To stay aligned with the changing needs of travelers and evolving dynamics, including conservation and sustainability, the industry must act swiftly, adapting strategies for tourism development. These expos provide a valuable platform for the tourism sector to discuss and share ideas, explore opportunities, and propel the industry to new heights. Beyond business transactions, the expos inspire investors and businesspeople to offer clients fresh, unique experiences, boost their enterprises, and gain a deeper understanding of destinations and products. They also provide a networking opportunity for investors to build partnerships across the continent. I extend my sincere appreciation to all participants, from exhibitors to buyers and media, for joining us in this year’s event. FOREWORD “The integration of the East African Community (EAC) offers diverse tourism opportunities”

PRINCIPAL SECRETARY, STATE DEPARTMENT FOR EAC, KENYA The East African Community is a tourism destination endowed with remarkable beauty ranging from pristine beaches, wildlife safaris, awe-inspiring lascapes, and a rich cultural tapestry. It is delightful that all EAC Partner States will be under one roof at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi - Kenya on 20th – 22nd November this year to showcase the expeditions we have to offer to the world while emphasizing the profound impact of East African Community (EAC) integration on regional tourism. The merging of the 13th Magical Kenya Tourism Expo (MKTE) and the 3rd East Africa Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) I believe unravels the story of a collective vision that transcends our borders, fostering unity and collaboration in a region that is blessed with unparalleled natural wonders. The integration of the East African Community offers diverse opportunities, including a visionary force shaping the destiny of East Africa as a premier tourist destination. With the diverse offerings bestowed in our nations, we bring expertise and knowledge to boost the regions tourism industry where the spirit of collaborations will propel us into a harmonious symphony of exploration. Tourism is one of the most significant sectors in all the economies of the EAC region. The sector contributes an average of about 17 percent to export earnings and its contribution to GDP is quite substantial at around 10 percent while contributing seven percent of employment in the region.

Despite the drop, there are signs of strong recovery in the region, and it is anticipated the pre-pandemic levels of performance could be achieved by 2024. With the consistent participation in these Expos, we are telling the world that we are ready to welcome them in our nations and offer multi-destination tourism packages. From the facilitation of cross-border travel to the promotion of joint marketing initiatives, the integration of the EAC serves as a beacon guiding travelers across a landscape rich in both geographical and cultural diversity. Further, the shared commitment to infrastructure development paves the way for seamless voyages, allowing visitors to traverse the region with ease and discover the myriad treasures held within each Partner State. Going into the future, I trust that these expos will continue to play a vital role in fostering economic growth, job creation, and cultural exchange while bolstering EAC as a regional tourism hub. The sector continues to register steady growth in all the EAC partner states with total international tourism arrivals increasing from 3.47 million to 6.95 million between 2006 and 2019. However, this growth trajectory was disrupted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which slumped 10

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER I take this opportunity on behalf of the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) to express great pleasure in hosting the 3rd edition of the East Africa Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) that is being hosted together with the 12th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE). This is the first year that Kenya is hosting EARTE and the board is encouraged by strong interest shown by sector players from the East Africa region. This speaks to our region’s shared interests in growth and seizing opportunities. The Expos come at an important time when we are all upping our efforts to restore the tourism industry, which had suffered due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The MKTE and EARTE expos are important to the industry they bring together domestic, regional, and international tour operators, travel agents, destination agencies, and various other players in the tourism trade to network and facilitate tourism business. We are encouraged by the great interest that the event has attracted as we expect participation from over 30 countries from across the globe. The expo will bring together over 280 exhibitors, over 100 hosted buyers, and 16 hosted media among other industry partners from some of Kenya’s key source markets in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The twin expo’s presents a great opportunity for the tourism industry players to interact with each other and get to learn about the various tourism offerings and products available in Magical Kenya.

The Expo’s will continue to be a useful platform for all of us in the tourism industry to discuss and share ideas, opportunities available to take the industry to the next level. I thank all our stakeholders in the tourism sector, including hotels, lodges, tour operators, airlines, and travel agents – Kenya Associates of Hotel Keepers and Caterers (KAHC), Tour Operators Society of Kenya (TOSK), Kenya Airways (KQ) among others for being part of the MKTE and EARTE journey. By collaborating, we have leveraged our strengths to foster improved tourism offerings and services and promote Kenya as a sought-after tourism destination.
