SD JR. SIMMENTAL FIELD DAY INFO
PLEASE NOTE: CONTESTANTS ONLY NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN TWO OF THE THREE CONTESTS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE SHOWMANSHIP BUCKLE. ALL THREE CONTEST SCORES WILL STILL COUNT FOR THE OVERALL WINNERS.
HERDSMAN QUIZ:
The Herdsman Quiz is a 25-question pencil and paper test. The questions will be based on cattle knowledge, the Simmental Breed, Simmental Association knowledge, and genetics/EPDs. Readers will be provided for contestants if needed.
PUBLIC SPEAKING:
Public Speaking is a speech that is between 3-7 minutes in length with two notecards allowed. BEGINNERS AND JUNIORS ARE ABLE TO CHOOSE TO PREPARE A SPEECH AHEAD OF TIME WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
- Why Simmental?
- What is your favorite cut of beef, and why?
- If you could shadow anyone in the beef industry, who would it be and why?
- Or any of the three topics the AJSA chooses for the National Classic (located on www.juniorsimmental.org )
SENIOR DIVISIONS WILL DRAW THREE TOPICS AND CHOOSE ONE TO PREPARE IN AN EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH (3-7 MINUTES IN LENGTH) PREP TIME IS 30 MINUTES. Reading materials will be provided for preparation. If a Beginner or Junior has not prepared a speech ahead of time they can utilize the extemporaneous topic process.
SALES TALK:
This contest requires the contestant to use their sales technique to sell their animal to a judge. Bring a printed photo, cellphone picture, or video on your phone or iPad of the animal you are selling. Official Registration Papers must be presented to the judge. A contestant may use the Updated BOLT EPDs from Herdbook Services for the animal being sold.
There are limitations to what can be brought into the contests. This will include, but not be limited to, business cards, sale catalogs, additional photos or registration papers, and any item displaying a farm or ranch logo. If a contestant brings in any of these materials, they will be subject to a 50% point deduction.
Remember to be creative - some kids sell their heifer, others sell the end product of a steer, and others sell embryos or cows. Any Simmental animal is allowed; it doesn’t have to be the animal you are showing that year.
SHOWMANSHIP:
We will follow the Spotlight age divisions. Please note that in order to be eligible for the Showmanship buckle and be a member of the Simmental Fitting Team at the State Fair, you will need to complete two of the t hree contests. For Seniors, this will include being eligible to be the Simmental Representative for the U-Fit-It contest.
POINTS:
Points are given to the top 5 in each contest (5 points for 1st down to 1 point for 5th). Contestants DO NOT get points for both Show and Showmanship. Whichever point count between the two is higher will be awarded (ex: contestant is a class winner and 5th overall Junior Showman- 5 points will be given as the show received more points than showmanship)
CONTEST TIMES:
Contests are to be completed between 1 pm and 5 pm on Friday. If accommodations must be made, then you need to communicate with Amber Blagg (605) 240-0028 ahead of Friday. The Herdsman Quiz can be taken on Thursday- watch for details on the South Dakota Junior Simmental Association Facebook page. This is the best way to know when and where contests will be held. Accommodations WILL NOT be made after 5:00 pm on Friday.
