SEASON PREVIEW SENIOR LEADERSHIP Seniors Lauren McCarthy and Sarah Lotto will provide veteran leadership for this year’s Nittany Lions. As they enter their fourth year in Happy Valley, McCarthy and Lotto are expected to aid in development of the team’s promising newcomers. McCarthy finished 12-17 overall last season in singles play. During her junior season, she had a four-match singles win streak against opponents from Lehigh, then-No. 64 Minnesota, then-No. 63 Iowa and Michigan State. McCarthy shined in doubles play, picking up eight No. 2 doubles victories on the year with partner Denisa Zobeideh. “Lauren is a tenacious fighter on the court,” said head coach Dawna Prevette. “You can always count on her to fight on the court. She stepped up for us last year into the #1 singles spot and finished the year playing the best tennis of her college career.” Lotto compiled a 6-10 singles record as a junior. She played primarily in the No. 1 doubles spot, where she compiled nine victories with partner Monika Mical. During fall play, Lotto and Mical were the champions of the Blue Flight at the Sergio Tacchini Invitational.

“Allie brings a lot of intangibles to our team,” Prevette said. “She’s mature and understands the big picture. She is always smiling and I admire her drive. It was exciting last season when she had an opportunity to fulﬁll her goal and represent PSU in a dual match.”

“Sarah has a great serve that it sets up her partner in doubles,” Prevette said. “We’re looking forward to see how she ﬁts into this years lineup.”

Prishlyak won 10 singles matches for the Nittany Lions last year, including an exciting 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 victory over Jackie Sperling of conference rival Minnesota. She also opened spring play with back-to-back doubles wins over Bucknell and Montana State.

RETURNING PLAYERS Joining the Class of 2010 are junior Denisa Zobeideh and sophomores Allie Hefter, Maria Prishlyak, Kristen Roth and Michaela Stracar.

“Maria has really developed her serve,” Prevette said. “Our goal for her this year is more about focusing and making smart decisions on the court.”

Zobeideh wrapped up the 2008-09 season with an 11-17 singles record. With the help of partner McCarthy, she compiled eight No. 2 doubles wins on the year. Zobeideh was also the Sergio Tacchini Invitational Doubles Flight D champion.

After walking onto the team in the fall, Roth won two singles matches. In doubles play, she picked up two victories with Zobeideh in the fall and a win over Lehigh in the spring with Hefter. Roth was recognized for her excellence in the classroom with the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award.

“Denisa is also an incredible ﬁghter,” Prevette said. “If she takes ownership of her game, the sky is the limit.”

“Kristin is extremely fun to coach, Prevette said. “She brings an extra positive energy to the court and she is a great example to others on the team.”

As a freshman, Hefter won her collegiate regular season debut with partner Kristen Roth in a tight 8-6 doubles victory over Lehigh. She also won fall singles matches against Jessica Margolis of Elon (6-2, 7-6) and Tara Brennan of Fairﬁeld (75, 6-1).

Stracar opened up her freshman season with a Silver Flight victory at the Yale Invitational. During the regular season, she edged Laryssa Ferreira of then-No. 66 Wichita State, 36, 6-1,10-4 and defeated Ruthie Furman of Lehigh in

“Michaela is serious about developing her game,” Prevette said. “She works extremely hard and with more match experience, she will be able to improve her skills even more.”

“Amy is a smart player,” Prevette aid. “She is a thinker on the court. One of her biggest strengths is her attitude and will. She understands the big picture and is willing to ﬁnd a way.”

TALENTED NEWCOMERS Freshmen Sarah Henderson, Petra Januskova and Amy Simidian round out the roster as the newest additions to the Nittany Lion lineup.

RECRUITING Prevette considers recruiting a top priority to continue a strong tradition for Penn State tennis. “It is imperative that the coaching staﬀ recruit players who have a strong desire to improve and develop their game to the next level,” said Prevette. “We are looking for student-athletes who love the challenges of the game and who expect growth in their game.”

During her junior career, Henderson played for St. Cuthbert’s College and was a member of the New Zealand Junior Federation Cup Team in 2006. Her high school team was National Champion in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Henderson’s three-year National Final record was 7-1 in singles and 9-0 in doubles. “Sarah has a ‘fire in the belly’ that is hard to teach,” said Prevette. “She loves to compete and she is open and willing to make developmental changes in her game.” A Canadian standout, Januskova has won three national titles in doubles. She represented Canada in the U14 World Junior Qualifiers in Mexico and in various tournaments in Europe and the United States. Januskova has finished in the top five in both singles and doubles every year since 2004. “Petra is extremely talented and she loves tennis,” Prevette said. “She is committed to development and is extremely coachable.” Simidian played her high school career at Henry P. Becton Regional high school in New Jersey. She won the state singles championship in 2008 and was a five-star recruit who was

Twelve of Penn State’s 21 regular season opponents were ranked in the ITA Top 75 at the conclusion of last season, including six Big Ten rivals. Northwestern, last year’s conference champion, ﬁnished the season ranked No. 2 in the country. “Competition in the Big Ten continues to strengthen,” Prevette said. “Many programs are bringing in better players and it is getting tougher. I love that! It is great for the conference.”

Third Season at Penn State 13-32

Head coach Dawna Prevette is in her third season guiding the Penn State women’s tennis team. In her first season at Penn State, the Nittany Lions compiled a record of 8-14, including three victories over ranked teams. Last year, the Lions went 5-18, including a conference upset over thenRegional High School Tournament from 2001-06. No. 63 Iowa. Prior to coming to Happy Valley, Prevette was an assistant coach at Baylor University where in addition to Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles, she helped the Bears to a berth in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. e Bears, who peaked at No. 6 in the national rankings, finished the season 13th in the ITA poll. Prevette coached two All-America singles players, including Zuzana Zemenova, who was a semifinalist in the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship. At Baylor, Prevette was heavily involved in player development, recruiting, travel, scheduling, fundraising and budgeting.

Prevette, who earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from North Texas in 2000, was a four-year letterwinner for the Mean Green and served as team captain in 1998 and 1999. Prevette was an all-conference performer in doubles in 1996 and was an active member of the North Texas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during her four years as a member of the women’s tennis squad. In her ﬁrst two seasons at North Texas, Prevette tallied a 12-15 record and then moved into the No. 1 singles spot for her junior and senior years. roughout her collegiate tennis career, she was the Big West Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and was named to the Raptor All-Eagle Academic Team. Prevette earned North Texas' Team Eagle award twice for best work ethic/team spirit.

Prior to joining the staﬀ at Baylor, Prevette was the head coach of the women’s tennis program at her alma mater North Texas for six seasons, accumulating the secondmost wins by any women’s tennis coach in North Texas history. e Mean Green posted the most wins in 17 years with 15 victories in the 2004 campaign. Q&A WITH COACH PREVETTE What does this year's senior class bring to the roster? Lauren [McCarthy] and Sarah [Lotto] have been a part of my system for two years. ey know what to expect and they know what is expected of them. ey are showing themselves to be leaders and mentors to the freshmen on and off the court. We Are!!! What are your goals for the team this year? e goal is always improvement. If you are not improving, what are you doing? We have specific goals for each player to enhance their own games within our system. If we do things right and have a positive attitude, the results will come.

Clark is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Nittany Lion women's tennis team. He came to Happy Valley after nearly a year as the program manager for junior competition and junior development at the United State Tennis Association's (USTA) Missouri Valley Section. In his role as the program manager for junior competition and junior development at the USTA Missouri Valley Section, Clark was responsible for overseeing and coordinating the junior competition circuit. Prior to his stint with the USTA, Clark was the director of junior development at Woodside Health and Tennis Club, where he oversaw all aspects of junior tennis instruction. He also interned for U.S. Representative Sam Graves of Missouri in Washington, D.C.

accolades in 2004. Clark was also on the 2005 University of Arkansas men's tennis team. As a high school player in Liberty, Missouri, Clark won the Missouri State Class 4A singles title in 2002 with a perfect 31-0 record. He was also voted the Kansas City Star Tennis Male Athlete of the Year in 2002 for the Kansas City Metro Area.

Clark was a member of the UMKC men's tennis team for three seasons, earning first team All Mid-Continent Conference honors in 2003 and second team all-league

Clark received his bachelor's degree in Psychology from UMKC in 2006.

What was the highlight of your first season? The highlight of the season had to be our two 4-3 wins over Big Ten opponents Iowa and Michigan State. Both matches came down to the last singles match and it doesn’t get anymore exciting than that in college tennis. I was really proud of how our team was able to find a way to win in both matches.

What are your goals for the team this year? My first goal for the team is improving each and every day. If the team is committed to improving every time they step out on the court, we will achieve a lot of great things this year. This team has the opportunity to really improve on last year’s results and I am really excited to see how high we can go.

What did you learn last year that you can carry into coaching this season? I learned that a lot of focus needs to be on looking at the big picture. Things don’t happen over night and everything is a process, so having confidence in your system and your players is vital in achieving success.

How would you describe Penn State? The atmosphere at Penn State is electric. I have never been at a school where there is so much support for athletics from the community. Penn State is a very unique school in that it combines a very high level of academics with a rich tradition and success in athletics. This combination is hard to find throughout the country.

SARNI TENNIS CENTER Penn State opened the new Sarni Tennis Center in September of 1998, and held their first night match against Bloomsburg in April, 1999. The Sarni Tennis Center is a $2.3 million facility that includes seven lighted courts, a stadium court with seating for 1,000 fans, a team clubhouse with locker rooms, meeting and video rooms and a racket stringing area. The Sarni Tennis Center received the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Outstanding Tennis Facility Award in 1999.

WHAT DOES SARNI MEAN FOR PENN STATE TENNIS? It means night matches under the stadium lights. Penn State can now schedule evening matches, which are a big crowd favorite. The stadium lighting is state-of-the-art. • It means tradition. Through a combination of display cases, banners, etc., the Sarni Center will proudly recognize the achievements of past players, NCAA qualifiers, All-Big Ten picks, Academic All-Americans and so on. • It means great visibility on campus. Located in the central part of campus and adjacent to the Bigler Sports Fields, Sarni will be a highly visible facility for the entire Penn State community. This will encourage the Penn State faculty, staff, and students as well as the Centre County community to catch the tennis fever by watching practices and attending matches. • To the players, it means “excitement.” Banners flying high above the stadium court, the beautiful Nittany Mountains and the Bryce Jordan Center as the backdrop and the majestic team clubhouse overlooking the courts ... what more could a player ask for in a practice and competition site! Sarni represents a big-time facility in a superb location. THE MAKING OF THE DREAM Vincent and Sandra Sarni started the ball rolling with their gift of

$675,000 to the construction of the $2.3 million facility. “The Sarni family its demonstrated extraordinary support of the University and the tennis program through this marvelous gift,” said Penn State athletic director Tim Curley. “Their gift enabled us to take this project from concept to reality.” Vincent Sarni, a retired chairman and chief executive officer of PPG Industries, and his wife are tennis enthusiasts. Neither of the Sarnis is a Penn State graduate, although both have been supporters of academic and athletic programs at the University and both have had children attend Penn State. In addition to the gift from the Sarni family approximately $500,000 in University funding went into the project, which will also provide for student use of the facility. THE PENN STATE INDOOR TENNIS CENTER e Penn State tennis team uses six outdoor Plexi-cushion courts and four indoor Decoturf courts. e indoor facility, one of the ﬁnest in the East, has four courts with an 800-seat elevated gallery, oﬃce, pro shop and locker rooms. e complex is used for matches and team and individual practices. With the availability of the indoor courts, the team does not lose valuable practice time or have matches cancelled or postponed.

ALUMNI WEEKEND ‘09 On September 4-5, 2009, 12 women’s tennis alumni and their families joined the Penn State women’s tennis team for the program’s ﬁrst annual alumni weekend. Festivities kicked oﬀ Friday night, as alums and their families were invited to watch the team practice, followed by a social and catered dinner at the Sarni Tennis Center. On Saturday, the group held a tailgate before the Penn State football team's season opener against Akron. Alumni in attendance included Candace Royer ('71), Sue Cray Bohn ('75), Linda Learmonth Groth ('85), Sue Whiteside ('83), Anne Beasley Cook ('81), Cherie Dow Baker, Carol Backentose Miller ('75), Carol Daniels ('82), Gail Ramsay ('80), Romi Walker Power ('87), Joan Nessler ('61) and Carol Zajac Wirth ('81). "It was great having everyone back at Penn State," said Coach Prevette. "It is important for us that they have a strong connection to the program. I am looking forward to bringing more alums back for future events."

Student-athletes are assigned an individual team counselor who provides advice on academics, academic planning, and career choices, as well as keeping them informed about NCAA, Big Ten and Penn State academic policies.

PENN STATE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FIRSTYEAR ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

Study enhancement sessions and two first-year seminar courses are required for all new incoming student-athletes. Upperclass student-athletes can participate in the Study Hall Program and utilize the most up to date computer lab technology available in one of four study spaces on campus. The Morgan Academic Support Center offers free tutoring assistance to all student-athletes. Additionally, group tutoring sessions are regularly offered.

The MASCSA Sue Paterno Mentoring Program is designed to help student-athletes on their road to success by assisting in the development of transferable study and time management skills.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE

This Program offers a variety of services to aid student-athletes in identifying their skills and interests and in making decisions regarding their choice of major. NAGLE CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM 1998 NCAA PROGRAM OF EXCELLENCE

MORGAN CENTER MISSION Central to the mission of Intercollegiate Athletics is the opportunity for student-athletes to experience a wellrounded educational program at The Pennsylvania State University. The mission of the Morgan Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes is to provide appropriate academic support services and University Faculty Senate, NCAA, and Big Ten Conference academic eligibility information to all student-athletes. These services and information should assist studentathletes in achieving their academic goals while participating in a demanding NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic program. These services also should ensure progress toward graduation through timely completion of degree requirements for baccalaureate and graduate programs.

The Nagle CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success)/Life Skills Program has been a model program and a consulting resource for the NCAA since its inception in 1989. The Life Skills Program was developed to better prepare studentathletes for the challenges of life beyond the athletic arena.

SPEAKERS BUREAU

The Speaker’s Bureau Program provides Penn State studentathletes with the opportunity to develop and utilize public presentation skills while giving back to the community.

PENN PAL PROGRAM

The “Penn” Pal Program enables student-athletes to correspond, on a monthly basis, with fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students in local school districts.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY A sport psychologist provides counseling and support to student-athletes in the areas of mental preparation strategies for training and competition, motivation and meaningful goal setting, visualization and performance planning, concentration and mental focusing, coping skill strategies for dealing with adversity, and, in general, issues pertaining to self-esteem development and student-athlete welfare.

ATHLETIC HONOR SOCIETY

The Athletic Honor Society, Spiritus Leonius (Spirit of the Lion), recognizes student-athletes for outstanding performance in athletics, academics, leadership, and community service.

SAAB

The Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) consists of one voting member and one or more alternates from each of Penn State’s 29 varsity athletic teams. SAAB meets monthly to discuss any new developments within the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and the University that affect all student-athletes at Penn State.

The Institute provides opportunities for student-athletes to assess their leadership styles and experiences, to develop and enhance their leadership skills, and to determine what public service leadership means to them.

SHADOW PROGRAM

The goal of the program is to give elementary and middle school students the opportunity to tour campus, visit college classes, and interact with student-athletes on a one-to-one basis.

THON

Dance Marathon, often referred to as THON, is the largest student-run philanthropy in the nation, raising more than $59 million for the Four Diamonds Fund and children’s cancer research since its inception in 1973.
