2013-14 Nittany lions 2013-14 Season PREVIEW • The Nittany Lions’ second NCAA Division I season will coincide with the first year of the Big Ten. • Penn State will open Pegula Ice Arena, a $90 million, stateof-the-art facility, for the 2013-14 season. The Nittany Lions will open the arena against Army on Friday, Oct. 11 during the University’s Homecoming weekend. • Only a second-year program, the Nittany Lions boast four NHL draft picks — Max Gardiner (St. Louis Blues), Patrick Koudys (Washington Capitals), Eamon McAdam (New York Islanders), Mike Williamson (Vancouver Canucks) — on the 2013-14 roster. • Penn State returns 18 letterwinners and welcomes nine newcomers, including two transfers with NCAA experience, to the 2013-14 squad. • Nearly 94 percent of Penn State’s scoring from a season ago returns, including the team’s top 13 scorers. Leading point and goal scorers Casey Bailey (14-13--27) and David Glen (16-9--25) both return to the team as sophomores. • Six of the team’s eight defensemen return, while Matthew Skoff (9-8-0, 2.48 GAA, .921 sv%) and PJ Musico (4-6-0, 3.22, .899) will reprise their roles between the Nittany Lion pipes. • The roster breakdown includes one senior, eight juniors, 11 sophomores and seven freshmen. The average height is just below 6-foot-1 and the average weight is 192. • The Nittany Lions will play at least 19 games against teams that have reached the NCAA Frozen Four since 2009. In all, Penn State will play a 34-game regular season, including 18 games at Pegula Ice Arena. • The Nittany Lions will play a 20-game league schedule that starts with a two-game road series at Wisconsin (Dec. 6-7). Penn State will host Minnesota in its Big Ten home opener Jan. 12-13. • Penn State will return to the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff at the Wells Fargo Center against Vermont (Oct. 26) and the Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center (Dec. 27-28. • In all, Penn State will battle five teams that qualified for the 2013 NCAA tournament, as well as out-of-conference opponents from Atlantic Hockey, ECAC Hockey and Hockey East. The Nittany Lions may also face the WCHA’s Bowling Green Falcons at the Three Rivers Classic.

Pegula Ice Arena’s media workroom is located near the southeast corner of the facility’s event level. Food, beverages and game notes will be available prior to the start of the game. The arena’s press box is located on the concourse level at the top of Section 119. Additional press seating will be available at the top of Sections 118 and 120. Wireless internet is available within the arena.

Please include your name, affiliation, cell phone and e-mail address on all requests. All credentials can be picked up at the Pegula Ice Arena media entrance, which is located along the south side of the building.

INTERVIEW POLICIES All interviews with student-athletes and coaches must be arranged through the athletic communications office. Studentathletes should not be contacted directly and have been instructed not to grant requests unless facilitated through athletic communications. Student-athlete interviews will take place either before or after practice. Interviews conducted before practice must be completed no later than 20 minutes prior to the start of practice. Interviews for student-athletes and coaches must be arranged through Matt Caracappa. Postgame press conferences will be held in the Pegula Ice Arena media room/auditorium. Head coach Guy Gadowsky and select student-athletes will be available after the 10-minute cool down period. Postgame interviews with the visiting team head coach and student-athletes should be arranged through the visiting team athletic communications contact.

RADIO/TV Radio/TV wishing to broadcast or tape a game must contact Matt Caracappa. Phone and internet lines will only be available to the home and visiting teams’ official radio. The home and visiting radio broadcast areas are located in the press box. TV cameras can set up in the SRO sections near Sections 101 and 112.

PHOTOGRAPHERS Photographers wishing to shoot at Pegula Ice Arena must also request credentials. Photography portals are available in the southeast and southwest corners, which are accessible from the event level.

Guy Gadowsky, who has more than a decade of collegiate head coaching experience, was named head coach of the Penn State men’s hockey team on April 24, 2011. In 2012-13, Gadowsky led the Nittany Lions to a 13-14-0 record during their inaugural NCAA Division I season. He guided the squad to several marquee victories, including wins against three future Big Ten teams (Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin). Under his direction, Penn State also topped Vermont in front of the largest crowd to watch a college hockey game in an NHL arena (19,529). The Nittany Lions, who competed as an independent in 2012-13, will join the Big Ten for its first season of play in 2013-14. Before coming to Happy Valley, Gadowsky served as Princeton’s bench boss for seven seasons. In his first five years as head coach, the Tigers improved their win total in each season. In 2008-09, Princeton captured a program-record 22 victories and earned its second straight NCAA tournament appearance. During the 2007-08 campaign, Gadowsky, who inherited a program that had a won a combined eight games in the two seasons prior to his arrival, guided Princeton to both the ECAC Hockey tournament and Ivy League crowns. The team earned its first NCAA tournament berth since 1998, and Gadowsky garnered ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year honors and was a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, presented to Division I hockey’s top coach. He was also named Inside College Hockey Coach of the Year. While at Princeton, Gadowsky had more than 20 players go on to sign professional contracts, with Kevin Westgarth playing for the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings in 2011-12. Jubinville (2008) and Zane Kalemba (2009) each won the award in their junior seasons. Prior to Princeton, Gadowsky spent five seasons as head coach of Alaska (1999-2004), where he inherited a team that had not won more than 14 games in the previous five seasons since joining the CCHA. After two rebuilding seasons, Gadowsky led the Nanooks, who were ranked 11th nationally at the end of the season, to their only 20-win campaign since joining the CCHA. He followed that up with 15 wins in 2002-03 and 16 victories his last season. In addition, Alaska twice hosted the first round of the CCHA playoffs in a three-year span, a feat never accomplished prior to Gadowsky’s arrival. During his tenure with the Nanooks, his teams set school records for team grade-point average, wins and game attendance. During Penn State’s transition to the varsity level, Gadowsky spent the 2011-12 season as head coach of the University’s club team. Before joining the collegiate ranks, Gadowsky spent three

He led the squad to the playoffs in each season and left the team as the winningest coach in franchise history. In his first season, Gadowsky posted a 38-win campaign as he garnered WCHL Coach of the Year accolades. The Edmonton, Alta., native played collegiately at Colorado College from 1985-89, serving as team captain as a senior, while also earning the team’s Rodman Award, given for outstanding leadership and sportsmanship. The three-time WCHA AllAcademic Team member collected 46 points in 134 career games. Upon graduation, Gadowsky embarked on a seven-year professional career that included stops with the ECHL’s Richmond Renegades, the IHL’s San Diego Gulls and the AHL’s St. John’s Maple Leafs and Prince Edward Island Senators. Gadowsky saved his best season for last as he totaled 52 goals and 29 assists for the Fresno Falcons in 1995-96. He earned league MVP and first-team all-star recognition. In addition, Gadowsky spent a portion of the 1993-94 season competing with the Canadian National Team and also played professionally in Austria, The Netherlands and Sweden. Gadowsky and his wife, Melissa, have two sons, Mac and Magnus, and a daughter, Mia.

Hockey staff Keith Fisher Assistant Coach Second Season St. Cloud State ‘00

Keith Fisher, who was named one of Penn State’s assistant coaches on May 4, 2011, helped lead the Nittany Lions to a 1314-0 record during their inaugural NCAA Division I season. Fisher helped guide Penn State to several marquee victories, including wins against three future Big Ten opponents (Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin). The Nittany Lions, who competed as an independent in 2012-13, will join the Big Ten for its first season in 2013-14. Fisher joined the Penn State staff after a six-year stint at Princeton (2005-11). With the Tigers, he helped lead the team to a pair of NCAA tournament berths (2008, 2009) and the 2008 ECAC Hockey title. Prior to his time at Princeton, Fisher spent five years with the USHL’s Omaha Lancers’ coaching staff, helping the team to the Clark Cup championship in 2001 and Anderson Cup regularseason championships in both 2002 and 2005. In Omaha, he served as the team’s recruiting coordinator and academic advisor, in addition to other responsibilities of on-ice coaching, video breakdown and game analysis. Fisher helped coach and recruit NHL first-round draft picks Keith Ballard and Nick Petrecki, seven current NHL players, including Matt Carle and Paul Stastny, and USHL Goaltender of the Year and USA Hockey Junior Player of the Year Jeff Lerg. Fisher helped develop 54 NCAA Division I scholarship players and 12 NHL draft picks. A native of the Zim, Minn., Fisher has coached at Minnesota Hockey Camps for more than a decade. His coaching career began in the Minnesota public school system as a coach of both football and baseball at Cherry High School. Prior to his arrival in Omaha, Fisher served two seasons with St. Cloud State University’s hockey program as an undergraduate assistant. Fisher served as associate coach for Team USHL at the USHL Prospects/All-Star game during his final season in Omaha. Hockey Select Festivals. A graduate of St. Cloud State University, Fisher earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. Matt Lindsay, who joined the Nittany Lion staff on May 4, 2011, helped lead the Nittany Lions to a 13-14-0 record during their inaugural NCAA Division I season. He joined Robert Morris’ staff following one season as a volunteer assistant coach at Colorado College, where he handled video, pre-scouting and onice responsibilities. Before Colorado College, Lindsay served three seasons (2002-05) as an assistant coach at Hobart College and one season (200102) in the same capacity at Utica College. Lindsay, who graduated from Williams College in 2001, earned the William E. McCormick “Coaches” Award as a senior. The award is presented to a member of the hockey team who best exemplifies leadership, loyalty, a selfless devotion to the team, a youthful delight in the game of hockey and, above all, a strong commitment to community service.

Bill Downey, who served as the director of hockey operations at Harvard in 2010-11, joined Penn State in the same capacity on June 17, 2011.

Strength & conditioning veteran Robert McLean was named Penn State Hockey’s head strength & conditioning coach on July 17, 2012.

A former professional hockey player and coach, Downey joined the Harvard staff after two years as an assistant coach with Penn State’s club hockey team. With Penn State, Downey was active in recruiting and served as an assistant director of the Penn State Ice Hockey Camps. He also was part of the advisory board that helped with the preparation for Penn State’s launch of NCAA hockey.

McLean, who came to Penn State with more than nine years of NHL experience, most served as the head strength & conditioning coach for the Colorado Avalanche for two seasons (2010-12).

During the 2007-08 season, Downey was an assistant coach for the Reading Royals of the ECHL, assisting in running practice, video analysis, opponent scouting and player development. At the same time, he served as hockey director for Team Comcast and Flyers Skate Zone in Pennsauken, N.J., where he oversaw all hockey programs, clinics and camps and promoted the game in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey. Downey also served as an Atlantic scout for the USHL’s Chicago Steel in 2007 and, since 2007, has been involved in the USA Hockey Coaching Education Program. He has organized and instructed at clinics for individuals seeking USA Hockey coaching certification. As a player, Downey spent parts of four seasons playing for the Johnstown Chiefs, Wheeling Nailers and Reading Royals of the ECHL. He was invited to the 2004-05 Pittsburgh Penguins training camp and also attended the training camp of the Penguins’ AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. As a player at Penn State, Downey earned ACHA All-America status and helped the team win three straight national championships (2001-03). He was also a member of Team USA for the 2003 World University Games in Tarvisio, Italy. A 2004 graduate, Downey earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. He is a member of the American Hockey Coaches Association and is a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach. Downey and his wife, Amy, have a daughter, Natalie. 16 2013-14 // PENN STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

Prior to Colorado, McLean was the head strength & conditioning specialist for BRS Sports for two years and also worked as a strength & conditioning specialist with High Performance Specialists from 1999-2000. McLean also served on the equipment staffs for the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche and New Jersey Devils in 1996 and 2000, respectively. He holds certification as a strength and conditioning specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. McLean and his wife, Christy, reside in State College with her son, Drake.

Justin Rogers Athletic Trainer Second Season Michigan State ‘09 Justin Rogers will enter his second season as the Penn State men’s hockey team’s athletic trainer in 2013-14. Rogers came to Penn State after spending the two years as a graduate assistant football athletic trainer with the University of Nebraska. Prior to working with Nebraska, Rogers worked on the Chicago Bears athletic training staff during the 2009 season. A 2009 Michigan State graduate, he worked as an athletic training student for the men’s hockey team and also provided services to other sports programs at the school.

Head Equipment Manager Second Season Western Michigan ‘98 Adam Sheehan was named Penn State Hockey’s head equipment manager on July 17, 2012. A fixture in NHL locker rooms for 13 years, Sheehan served four seasons (200812) as an assistant equipment manager with the Detroit Red Wings. In addition to his time with Detroit, Sheehan spent two stints as an equipment assistant with the Phoenix Coyotes (1998-2003, 2005-08) and also served in the same capacity with the Carolina Hurricanes during the 2003-04 campaign.

hockey staff Joe Battista Associate Athletic Director, Ice Arena & Hockey Development

Longtime Penn State Athletics and University Development employee Joe Battista assumed a pivotal role with Penn State as the Associate Athletic Director for Ice Arena & Hockey Development in September 2010. Battista was instrumental in facilitating the largest gift in the University’s history, an $88 million donation for a multi-purpose ice facility and Division I men’s ice hockey team, which came through the generosity of Terry and Kim Pegula. A longtime head coach of Penn State’s men’s club hockey team and former Executive Director of the Nittany Lion Club, Battista most recently served as the Director of Major Gifts for the Smeal College of Business, a position he accepted in March 2009. During his tenure, Battista was awarded the 2009 Ridge Riley Lions’ Pride Award in the Division of Development and Alumni Relations. In his first development position, Battista served as the Executive Director of the Nittany Lion Club from 2006-09. While with the Nittany Lion Club, Battista helped grow the club to a then-record 23,000 members. Under his guidance, the annual giving to support the Intercollegiate Athletic Department also increased to record levels. Prior to his appointment with the Nittany Lion Club, Battista was the head coach of the Penn State Icers for 19 years (1987-2006), bringing six ACHA national titles to Happy Valley. His teams played in 10 straight national championship games, and he graduated 97 percent of the participating student-athletes during that time.

From 1982-85, Battista was an Assistant to the Marketing Director for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and was also head coach of the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins at that time. In 1983, he was the co-founder of the Amateur Penguins Hockey organization, which to this day fields competitive teams in six age groups, and created the position of Director of Amateur Hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins, serving as its first Director. A USA Hockey Master Level Coach, he was a USA Hockey Player Development and Coaching Certification instructor for 20 years. In 2003, he coached Team USA at the World University Games in Tarvisio, Italy. Battista has been inducted into numerous halls of fame for his athletic accomplishments and contributions to hockey, including the ACHA Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, the Penn Hills Sports Hall of Fame and the Penn State Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. A Pittsburgh native, Battista is a 1983 graduate of the Smeal College of Business with a degree in marketing. He captained the hockey team while an undergraduate and was President of the Hockey Management Association. Battista and his wife, Heidi (Penn State BS Geology ‘81, EPC MS’83), live in State College with their three children, Brianna, Jonathon and Ryan.

Battista received ACHA Division I Coach of the Year honors in 1999-2000 and 2001-02, and won more than 500 games as a head coach. In 1991, Battista was a co-founder of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), which has since grown to a membership of close to 500 Universities and Colleges in five divisions. He is also a past president of the association. Battista also coached at Kent State University (1985-86) as a graduate assistant before moving to Culver (Ind.) Military Academy the following year (1986-87).

2013-14 Inaugural Season • The Nittany Lions faced three future Big Ten opponents - Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin - in 2012-13 and secured at least one victory in each series. • Each Big Ten team will play 20 league games, including 10 home contests, in 2013-14. The Nittany Lions will open Big Ten play at Wisconsin Dec. 6 and host Minnesota in their home opener Jan. 12. • Big Ten schools have won a combined 23 national championships, more than any other conference. • The Big Ten Hockey Conference is the only BCS conference to sponsor men’s hockey. • With six member institutions, the Big Ten’s tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Hockey Championship.

In the Classroom Academic achievements Penn State in the NCAA • A school-record of 296 Nittany Lion student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2012-13, shattering the previous record of 261. • A record 68 Nittany Lion student-athletes earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award in 2012-13 for earning a GPA of 3.7 or higher during the most recent academic year. • The NCAA’s annual study of institutions nationwide in October 2012 revealed that Penn State student-athletes at the University Park campus earned a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 88 percent compared to an 80 percent average for all Division I institutions. The 88 percent figure was third-highest among Big Ten Conference institutions. • The NCAA four-year federal graduation rate average for University Park student-athletes was 78 percent, significantly higher than the national average of 64 percent. Hockey In Happy Valley EARLY YEARS

Although Penn State will enter its second NCAA Division I season in 2013-14, hockey played an important role in Happy Valley dating back to the late 1890s. From that time until the early 1900s, many of Penn State’s 300 students played pickup hockey games on flooded outdoor rinks. From 1906-09, students primarily from the Pittsburgh area organized a hockey team with the intent to seek official approval for an intercollegiate varsity team by the University’s Athletic Association, which oversaw all Penn State sports. On Christmas night in 1909, the first Penn State hockey team, led by captain Herb Baetz, played its first-ever intercollegiate game against Carnegie Tech at the Duquesne Gardens in Pittsburgh. Less than a week later, Penn State’s first team took to Duquesne Gardens once more, this time facing Pittsburgh and dropping a hard-fought match, 2-1. Following their second game, Baetz and the rest of the team hoped it proved to the University that hockey would be a viable sport at Penn State. On Jan. 21, however, the University officially rejected the bid. Penn State students would fight to make hockey a varsity sport for a better part of the next two decades. Unfortunately, it seemed like more often than not an attempt to find a suitable outdoor arena, including a location at Old Beaver Field in the early 1920s near where Osmond Laboratory is today, almost always led to the plan’s downfall. Nevertheless, in the winter of 1938, the path toward varsity hockey was resurrected as eight members of the Sigma Phi fraternity formed an independent hockey team. On Feb. 12, the new Penn State hockey team played an exhibition game against Lakemont, an independent amateur team, in Altoona, Pa., with Al Hook, a physical education professor, serving as team coach. Ten days later, the squad suited up for its first intercollegiate game against Pittsburgh at the Duquesne Gardens, losing 4-0. 74 2013-14 // PENN STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

The team remained at the club level for another two seasons. Prior to the start of the 1938-39 campaign, Dr. Carl P. Schott, Dean of the School of Physical Education and Athletics, approved appropriations of $100 for the team. Dr. Arthur F. Davis, who also coached the first four seasons of varsity hockey at Penn State, was named the team’s head coach. In the beginning of the season, the team was forced to practice indoors at the Armory building or outside on the pond at Whipple Dam, and played three games. Although Penn State garnered much success during its first two seasons and varsity hockey seemed poised to stay at Happy Valley, the United States’ involvement in World War II, combined with the lack of availability of ice on campus, had a devastating effect on the viability of Penn State Hockey.

Ravaged by the war, Coach Davis and Penn State prepared for the 1943-44 season with only three members from the previous year’s squad after losing most of its members to military and civilian enrollment. Although the team only played two games against Cornell and Army, in addition to a pair of practice sessions against the Hershey Jr. Cubs and Army Air Corps, plans once again were put into place for a new rink near Beaver Field. The plan never came to fruition.

Coach Davis was steadfast in keeping hockey at the varsity level, telling the University’s student newspaper, The Penn State Collegian, “Ice Hockey will be continued, whether other collegiate competition is scheduled or not. If no other teams will accept bids, hockey will continue even if we have to resort to intrasquad contests.” With many teams dropping the sport, Penn State only played four games during the 1942-43 season, including just two collegiate contests. Along with hockey, cross country, swimming, gymnastics, tennis and golf all were dropped for the remainder of the war. In the winter of 1946, following two

seasons of dormancy, hockey made its return for one final season. James O’Hora, a new addition to the football coaching staff, was selected to lead Penn State for the 1946-47 season. The Nittany Lions were scheduled to play seven games, but four contests were cancelled due to warm weather. In its three contests against Colgate, Army and Georgetown, Penn State was defeated in each game. Following the season, the Athletic Association dropped hockey once more, citing limited facilities.

CLUB YEARS

It took almost 30 years for hockey to make its return to Penn State. Following a petition that included more than 3,000 signatures from the local community, Penn State hockey returned at the club level for the 1971-72 season. Through the course of the next 41 years, Penn State built arguably the most successful club program in the nation. Larry Hendry served as the team’s first coach and, during the early 1970s, teams were comprised of undergraduates, graduate students and faculty members before more stringent eligibility rules were put into place. During their return to campus, the Penn State Icers called three different arenas home. From 1971-78, the team played at the original Ice Pavilion, which opened in 1955, and was located near the current location of the Lasch Football Building. Following two and a half seasons (197881) travelling to Mechanicsburg and playing on an outdoor rink, the Greenberg Ice Pavilion, which served as the home of Penn State’s NCAA team in 2012-13, opened in January 1981.

Max Gardiner had the honor of taking Penn State’s first faceoff at the NCAA Division I level.

The Icers compiled a staggering 956-29552 record during its 41 years as a club program. In total, Penn State captured seven American Collegiate Hockey Association national championships (1984, 1990, 1998, 2000-03) and appeared in the national championship game a remarkable 10 straight seasons. Hockey in Happy Valley Perhaps the most influential person during that era was Associate Athletic Director Joe Battista, who served as head coach for 19 years (1987-2006) and recorded a 512-120-27 mark. His teams captured six national titles and played in 10 straight title games, and he graduated 97 percent of the participating student-athletes during that time. Battista was also an instrumental figure in facilitating the largest gift in University history, an $88 million donation from Terry and Kim Pegula in September 2010, which established an NCAA Division I men’s hockey program. Two Icers – Alon Eizenman (2000) and Neal Price (2002) – were named ACHA Player of the Year, while Penn State boasted 23 ACHA First Team AllAmericans and, since 1995, 62 ACHA Academic All-Americans. In addition, 10 student-athletes continued their careers in the American Hockey League, ECHL or Europe. Eizenman was also one of three people with Penn State ties inducted into the ACHA Hall of Fame, along with builders Josh Brandwene, a former Icers defenseman and head coach of Penn State’s women’s ice hockey team, and Battista.

NCAA DIVISION I ERA

On Sept. 17, 2010, a new chapter of Penn State Hockey began with the aforementioned gift from Terry and Kim Pegula. Since that time, the Pegulas have contributed $102 million to the arena and hockey program. Following the establishment of the hockey program, the Big Ten announced the recommendation to create a hockey conference for its six member schools that now sponsored men’s hockey. Beginning in the 2013-14 season, Penn State will join Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin for the conference’s first season of play. With the announcement of varsity hockey returning to Penn State, University leadership turned toward hiring its first NCAA Division I head coach, and that search came to an end with the appointment of 12-year NCAA head 76 2013-14 // PENN STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

The Nittany Lions will move into the $90 million, state-of-the-art Pegula Ice Arena beginning in the 2013-14 season. coaching veteran Guy Gadowsky, who rebuilt programs at both Princeton and Alaska. Gadowsky quickly worked to assemble his staff, bringing his assistant coaches at Princeton – Keith Fisher and Matt Lindsay – to Happy Valley. He rounded out the staff with the selection of Bill Downey, a Penn State alumnus and former member of the club hockey team, as director of hockey operations. On Sept. 5, 2011, the bench boss then announced the team’s first four members and NCAA Division I transfers – Taylor Holstrom, Nate Jensen, Bryce Johnson, Justin Kirchhevel – and, two months later, Penn State’s first NCAA recruiting class was unveiled. In February 2012, construction began on Pegula Ice Arena, which will serve as home to the Penn State men’s hockey team beginning in the 2013-14 season. The 2012-13 season brought many highlights to Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions finished their inaugural NCAA Division I season with a 13-14-0 record and defeated several marquee opponents, including Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin.

With a new era of Penn State Hockey, the program established many firsts. Anchorage, Alaska, native Casey Bailey scored the team’s first goal at the NCAA level in the team’s first game against American International College Oct. 12, while forward and Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., native David Glen tallied the first game-winning goal. Goaltender PJ Musico had the honor of securing the program’s first win in an overtime victory against AIC Oct. 13. The 2013-14 campaign will bring continued excitement to the State College community as Penn State begins play in the Big Ten and the state-of-the-art Pegula Ice Arena. Penn State will begin its second season at home against Army Oct. 11 and plays its first Big Ten game in Madison, Wis., versus Wisconsin Dec. 6.

Penn State University

Since admitting its first students in 1859, Penn State has

awarded more than 730,000 degrees, hallmarks of an educational experience second to none in quality. In addition, Penn State alumni — including nearly 320,000 in Pennsylvania alone — have job- and social-networking opportunities that no other college or university in the Commonwealth can surpass. The University’s beginnings were humble. Chartered as a college of scientific agriculture, the institution was located in rural Centre County after James Irvin, a partner in the Centre Furnace iron works (remains of which can be seen today along East College Avenue), offered to donate 200 acres of farmland for a campus. Founding President Evan Pugh wanted Penn State to embody a new approach to higher education that blended classical studies with subjects that had practical value. He joined similar visionaries in other states in convincing Congress to pass the Morrill Land-Grant Act in 1862. The act gave individual states tracts of federal land to sell; the proceeds supported colleges that agreed to include engineering, science and the liberal arts as well as agriculture in their course of studies. In 1863, the Pennsylvania legislature designated Penn State the Commonwealth’s sole land-grant institution. The lawmakers in effect bestowed on the privately incorporated college a public character. In return for state support, the institution assumed

obligations of teaching, research and service that are normally associated with publicly owned land-grant universities in other states. By the 1890s Penn State was making its mark. It ranked among the nation’s 10 largest undergraduate engineering schools, a distinction it still holds. It established one of the nation’s first collegiate agricultural experiment stations, and Professor Whitman Jordan’s pioneering research on using fertilizers for soil enrichment had global impact on crop yields. President George Atherton invigorated the liberal arts, and recruited Professor of English Fred Pattee to teach the nation’s first course in American literature, heretofore considered an unworthy stepchild of English literature. Penn State in 1871 became one of the first landgrant schools in the Northeast to admit women, graduated its first international student in 1890, and its first African-American student in 1905. In the early 1900s, President Edwin E. Sparks supported a number of efforts to “carry the college to the people,” as he liked to say. Technical institutes were established in various locations statewide for engineering education, beginning with an evening school in Allentown in 1910. In 1912, Penn State helped create a system of county agents in agriculture and home economics. Today’s World Campus, with its “anywhere, anytime” learning through the Internet, builds on that outreach tradition.

But undergraduate education remained foremost. As enrollment surpassed 5,000 students in 1936, Penn State became Pennsylvania’s largest source of baccalaureate degrees. Also in the 1930s, a state-wide system of undergraduate centers was created for students who, in the depths of the Great Depression, could not afford to leave their hometowns to get a college education. The centers offered the first year of baccalaureate studies and were the predecessors of today’s system of 19 primarily undergraduate campuses located throughout the Commonwealth. Following World War II, Penn State underwent unprecedented expansion, first to meet the needs of returning military veterans and later to accommodate the Baby Boom generation. Total enrollment at all Penn State campuses climbed to 40,000 by 1970. The University also emerged on the national scene as a research powerhouse. Research first garnered international attention in fields as diverse as dairy science, acoustics, psychology, and diesel engineering. The expansion of research activities went hand in hand with a steady increase in the number of graduate students. The University awarded its first graduate degree — a master’s degree in scientific agriculture — in 1862, and the Graduate School was established in 1922. But overall graduate enrollment remained modest until the 1950s, then swelled

steadily. By 2013, Penn State had awarded nearly 30,000 master’s, doctoral, and other advanced degrees. Undergraduates, too, benefited from a greater emphasis on research, as they had opportunities to work alongside worldrenowned faculty in laboratories and in the field, thus enriching their educational experience in ways typically unavailable to undergraduates at smaller institutions. Annual research expenditures now exceed $800 million, including about $500 million in federal research funds that Penn State brings to Pennsylvania, and $110 million in support from business in industry. The University’s research enterprise generates nearly $9 billion in total economic impact across the Commonwealth each year. Penn State currently enrolls approximately 96,000 students on 25 campuses: the research and administrative hub at University Park; 19 primarily undergraduate campuses; Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, including the College of Medicine; the Pennsylvania College of Technology; the Penn State Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle campus; the Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies; and the Penn State World Campus.

Penn State university Rodney A. Erickson President Rodney A. Erickson assumed responsibilities as the 17th President of The Pennsylvania State University on November 9, 2011. Previously, Erickson served as Penn State’s executive vice president and provost since July 1, 1999. As provost, he was chief academic officer of the University, responsible for administration of the University’s resident instruction, research and continuing education, and for the general welfare of the faculty and students. As executive vice president, Erickson served as the chief executive officer in the president’s absence and was centrally involved in most aspects of University operations. Erickson is deeply committed to Penn State and to fulfilling the University’s mission of excellence in education, groundbreaking research, creative activity and service to those in Pennsylvania, the nation and the world. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of academia, business, and government to advance education and create new knowledge to benefit the community at large. He is a highly respected academic leader, and he has chaired numerous task forces and special committees, including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, which is the academic arm of the Big Ten universities. Erickson is a former Fulbright Research Scholar in the United Kingdom and a Simon Senior Fellow at the University of Manchester. His research has focused on the spatial dimensions of urban and regional economies, international trade, and economic development policies.

Leadership Council, which provides advice and counsel to the president on academic matters. He also chaired the Facilities Resources Committee, and was a member of the President’s Council, as well as an ex-officio member of the University Faculty Senate and Senate Council. He has been the leader of many University task forces in recent years, including the Task Force on Tuition, the University Cost Savings Task Force, the University Strategic Planning Council, and the Academic Program and Administrative Services Review Core Council, which was the group charged with identifying millions of dollars in permanent cost savings and nontuition revenue sources for the University for the coming years. President Erickson was named an Honorary Alumnus by the Penn State Alumni Association in 2010 for his contributions to improving the academic stature of the University and enhancing the success of students.

Erickson holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Minnesota, and was awarded a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Washington in 1973. He began his academic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining the faculty at Penn State in 1977. He was promoted to professor in both geography and business administration in 1984. He was named dean of the Graduate School in July 1995 and, in March 1997, he assumed the additional responsibilities of vice president for research. Among his other administrative assignments at Penn State, Erickson served as head of the Department of Geography in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and as director of the Center for Regional Business Analysis and associate director of the Division of Research in the Smeal College of Business. Penn State University Dave Joyner Athletic Director David M. Joyner was named Penn State’s Director of Athletics on January 21, 2013. He had served as the Acting Director of Athletics since November 16, 2011. A two-sport All-American and Academic All-American at Penn State, Joyner is a former sports medicine physician and health care and business consultant who provides a strong background in department budget, facilities, fundraising and personnel management. Joyner oversees an athletic department with more than 800 student-athletes and 300 staff members that expanded to 31 varsity sports in 2012-13 with the launch of NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey. Penn State’s 31 sports are tied for third-highest in the nation among Football Bowl Subdivision institutions. Joyner’s mantra for Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics is IAC — Integrity, Academics and Championships — and the 2012-13 academic year provided a substantial list of accomplishments in all three core areas. In his first full year as Athletic Director, he provided the leadership for one of the most successful years in Penn State’s glorious history of student-athlete academic and athletic success. Penn State student-athletes captured a school-record 11 conference championships in 2012-13, including a record eight Big Ten titles, the most of any conference institution. Twenty-one of 31 teams were represented in their respective NCAA Championship, with the wrestling team capturing a third consecutive national title. A Penn State-record eight head coaches were selected Big Ten Coach-of-theYear in 2012-13, including football coach Bill O’Brien. Joyner led the search that identified and hired O’Brien in January 2012. Penn State was No. 6 in the final 2012-13 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, its highest finish in 10 years. A school-record 296 Penn State studentathletes earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades during the 2012-13 academic year, crushing the previous record of 261. Seven Penn State student-athletes

attained Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America® accolades in 2012-13, including three first-team honorees. Six teams compiled perfect multi-year NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores of 1,000 and the average multi-year APR score for Penn State’s varsity teams was 984, easily above the Division I average of 974. Founder, Chairman and CEO of Joyner Sports Medicine Institute (JSI) from 1992-98, he developed and managed 19 physical therapy centers and 350 employees in eight states to deliver state-of-the-art training and rehabilitation services honed by U.S. Olympic and Elite Medical Team experience and leadership.

Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Committee and the vice-chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Anti-Doping Committee. He currently is a member of the medical commission of the Pan American Sports Organization. Joyner served on the Pennsylvania Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and has served as Chairman of USA Football’s Football and Wellness Committee and has been an emeritus member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Closely involved with numerous campus initiatives, Joyner has served as a member of the Penn State Libraries Development Advisory Board, co-chairman of the Paterno Libraries Endowment, chairman of the external advisory board for the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence and the Schreyer Honors College.

An offensive tackle from 1969-71, Joyner earned first-team All-America honors his senior season and was a team co-captain. He was instrumental in helping the Nittany Lions compile a cumulative 29-4 record, including an 11-0 mark in 1969, with victories in the 1970 Orange and 1972 Cotton bowls. Joyner also was a standout wrestler from 1970-72, gaining All-America honors by finishing as the NCAA runner-up at heavyweight in 1971.

In 2003, as chairman of the Penn State Athletic Campaign Committee, he led a five-year effort to raise $130 million for the athletic department, far surpassing the campaign’s $100 million goal. During the same period, as a member of the Executive Committee of the University’s Leadership Gifts Committee, he helped achieve the University’s goal to raise $745 million. He also has been a member of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Capital Campaign Committee.

Joyner was named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1971 and is one of a select group of individuals who have been inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame, which honors “those with the highest standards in college academics, athletics and in life beyond athletics.” Joyner also received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship as a Penn State student-athlete and was selected for the prestigious NCAA Silver Anniversary Award in 1997.

A member of the Penn State Board of Trustees from 2000 until the date of his appointment with Intercollegiate Athletics, Joyner was honored in 1992 as a Distinguished Alumnus of Penn State. He currently is a member of the board of directors of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Joyner was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1993.

Joyner’s work with the U.S. Olympic Committee includes service as head physician to the United States’ teams at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games, the 1991 World University Games and the 1989 United States Olympic Festival. He is a past chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Society. Joyner served as the chairman of the U.S.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in science in 1972 and his M.D. from Penn State’s College of Medicine in 1976. Following residencies in general and orthopedic surgery at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and a stint in the World Football League, Joyner began a medical career with a sports medicine emphasis. Penn State Athletics 2012-13 Athletic Highlights * Penn State was No. 6 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, earning a school-record 1,100 points. The Nittany Lions earned their ninth Top-10 finish in the Directors’ Cup survey and their highest finish since placing No. 5 in 2002-03. Penn State is among only nine schools to finish in the Directors’ Cup Top 25 all 20 years. * The Nittany Lions earned a school-record 11 conference championships, including a record eight Big Ten titles. In addition to the Big Ten champions (see below), the men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball teams also won or shared their conference championships. * The Nittany Lions earned a school-record eight Big Ten championships, the most of any institution. Penn State’s Big Ten champions: women’s basketball, field hockey (regular season and tournament), men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s outdoor track and field, women’s volleyball and wrestling. * Penn State has won 81 Big Ten regular season or tournament titles all-time, including 13 in the past two years. The 1993-94 academic year was Penn State’s first full year in the Big Ten. * A total of 21 Penn State programs (out of 31) participated in their respective NCAA Championship in 2012-13 either as a team or by individuals. * Penn State has won 12 NCAA Championships since March 2007 (in five sports), tied with USC for most in the nation during the past six years. Penn State has won 23 NCAA Championships since 1993-94, its first full year in the Big Ten Conference, more than double every other Big Ten institution. The Nittany Lions have won 69 national championships all-time. * Penn State captured five fall Big Ten titles for the first time since 2005. The Nittany Lions were conference champs in women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, field hockey (regular season and tournament) and men’s soccer. * A school-record eight Penn State coaches were selected Big Ten Coach of the Year. * A school-record 296 Penn State student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades during the 2012-13 academic year.
