Cagle was announced Interim Head Coach for the women’s tennis team in December of 2013. Chris Cagle enters his third season with the Nittany Lions as the assistant coach to Jeff Zinn for the men’s tennis team. The men’s tennis team went 11-14 in his first year at Penn State. Cagle served one season as a volunteer assistant coach to Zinn at Wake Forest, where he played an active on-court role, helping the Demon Deacons reach the NCAA tournament. In 2011, Wake Forest posted a 14-12 record, notching his 11th straight winning season. The Demon Deacons won 10 matches against nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-0 win over No. 30 Wisconsin to open the season and a 4-0 victory against No. 46 Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Before joining the Demon Deacons, Cagle established himself as one of the top junior tennis coaches, coaching players to 10 national junior titles. He has also coached players in all four Junior Grand Slams, and twice coached a player in the main draw of a Grand Slam. In addition Cagle has coached and trained female players that have won NCAA Singles, Doubles and Team Championships including the MVP of a NCAA Championship team. Cagle, originally from Greensboro, N.C., played as a member of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington men’s tennis program from 1989-1993. He was the first two-time captain in North Carolina-Wilmington men’s tennis program history. In 2009 reached the No. 1 ranking in United States men’s 30s singles competition. Cagle became the chairman for Junior Competition for North Carolina Tennis, serves on the Southern Tennis Junior Competition Board, and the Winston-Salem Tennis, Inc. Board. He was the tournament director for the 2010 Boys’ 12 and Under National Clay Court Clay Court Championships. In 2010, Cagle received the Mary Milam Lifetime Achievement Award from North Carolina Tennis for his contributions to junior tennis. From 2004-06, Cagle served on the Cystic Fibrosis Tennis Auction Ball Committee. In 2006, he took the Co-Chair position for the auction ball, which raised over $100,000 to fight 4

Assistant coach Mike Fenwick is in his fourth season as an assistant coach. Fenwick came to Happy Valley after spending the 2009-10 season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Baylor men’s tennis team. In three seasons Fenwick has helped coach Penn State to some of their best seasons in program history. During the 2012-2013 season Fenwick helped lead the Nittany Lions to their best season since 2000-2001 when they made the NCAA Tournament. The Nittany Lions totaled a 14-8 record including victories over 10 teams in the Final ITA Team Poll. Fenwick was also named the ITA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year in only his third year with the program. The Nittany Lions started the season with 10 straight victories and had two players win postseason conference awards. Petra Januskova received her third straight All-Big Ten First Team Award and Jacqueline Zuhse was a Sportsmanship Award Honoree. Fenwick played a pivotal role in coaching Januskova and Chelsea Utting into one of the top pairs in the nation. The duo knocked off five nationally ranked pairs en route to the NCAA Doubles Tournament and became only the third Nittany Lions pair in program history make the tournament.

health, human performance and recreation department at Baylor and served as an instructor at the Waco Regional Tennis Center. Prior to his tenure at Baylor, Fenwick spent four years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Western Illinois. He helped guide the Leathernecks to the Summit League regular-season title in 2008, the program’s first regular-season conference title. Fenwick also had a hand in producing a Mid-Con Men’s Newcomer of the Year, a Mid-Con Men’s Player of the Year and 10 men’s and women’s all-conference selections while in Macomb. The WIU men also claimed the 2006 Mid-Con Tournament title and earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 2006. Fenwick graduated from Western Illinois University in 2006 with a degree in business management. He also earned his master’s degree from WIU in recreation, park and tourism administration in 2009. Fenwick played tennis at Quincy University in 2004-05 after spending time at Sauk Valley Community College (2002-03) and Illinois Valley Community College (2003-04). Fenwick’s brother, Chad, is the director of tennis/head men’s and women’s coach for Ashford University. Fenwick was a teaching tennis professional in his native Dixon, Ill. He has also worked summer tennis camps run by the Naval Academy and Pepperdine University.

During the fall Fenwick coached Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting to one of the most successful fall seasons in team history, seeing them compete in two invite-only Tournaments. Januskova and Utting competed in the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships and Januskova competed in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships featuring the top 32 players in the country. Januskova also took home the Singles Championship at the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament. Fenwick helped coach the Nittany Lions to a twelve-win season in 2011-12 where they knocked off four ranked opponents finishing the season ranked No. 51 in the nation. It was the first time the Nittany Lions found their way into the rankings since 2008. As a volunteer assistant coach, Fenwick helped the Baylor Bears to a No. 7 ranking in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll with a 24-7 record. PLAYER PROFILES

RETURNING PLAYERS The Penn State women’s tennis team returns eight players from its 2012-13 roster. Penn State is led by seniors Chelsea Utting, Marie-Frederique Bedard and Carmen Sandor. Utting had her best season as a Nittany Lion last year compiling a 17-13 singles record and a team-leading 21-10 doubles record en route to becoming a member of only the third Nittany Lions pair to reach the NCAA Doubles Tournament in program history. As a result of her never-give-up attitude and eagerness to learn, Bedard came back from injury and became an important factor for Penn State in the spring, winning six singles and three doubles matchs. According to Denny Wine, “the sky is the limit” for a player like Sandor. Last season Sandor set a career-high with 19 singles victories. She also tallied 13 doubles wins playing with five different partners and in all three doubles spots in the spring. The Nittany Lions also bring back five sophomores to mesh with the veteran leadership. Devan McCluskey is coming off of an impressive freshman season where she finished second on the team with 20 singles victories including eight in the fall which was the most for a freshman since 2008. Jacqueline Zuhse also impressed in her first collegiate season winning 16 singles and 11 doubles matches, playing her way into No. 3 singles after starting the season at No. 6. Katherine Whiteaway won 12 matches in her freshman year playing in various roles for the team. She started her spring season winning three of her first four doubles matches playing in the No. 2 spot. Emily Rivers and Lisa Petruzillo made their Nittany Lion debuts at the WMU Super Challenge. TALENTED NEWCOMERS The 2013-2014 Penn State team features five new members on its roster, including three freshman. Samantha Tutelman joins the Nittany Lions from New York where she won several USTA Junior Championships and was rated a top-50 recruit by TennisRecruiting.net. Melissa Minniti comes to Penn State from Gaithersburg, Maryland where she played four years of varsity tennis for Quince Orchard High School. She played No. 1 singles her final two seasons and captained her team to the state tournament her senior season where she also competed in the state’s singles tournament. Katia Blik comes to Happy Valley from Moscow, Russia. She attended Hampton School and the German School London. Penn State also brings in Taylor Shukow and Dasha Sapogova who will join the team in January at the start of the spring semester. Shukow hails from Boca Raton, Fla. where she trained at the Evert Tennis Academy with Chris and John Evert. Sapogova, a Minsk native, comes to Penn State having spent her last five years in Spain playing at School IPSE in Barcelona. BUILDING OFF OF THE FALL Several Nittany Lions made great strides during the 2013 Fall campaign. Senior Marie-Frederique Bedard led Penn State in singles victories with six during the fall including five 6

consecutive wins spanning two tournaments. At the Cissie Leary Invite in Philadelphia Bedard won all four back draw matches to take home the back draw title defeating Temple’s Yana Mavrina in the final. Senior Carmen Sandor led the Nittany Lions in doubles play, finishing with five victories on the fall. Teaming with Bedard at the Cissie Leary Invite, the duo won four consecutive matches en route to the back draw doubles title. It was Bedard’s second back draw final victory of the weekend. Senior Chelsea Utting saw limited action this fall dealing with minor injuries but earned two singles victories in Midland at the Racquet Club Invitational against top competition. In her first fall as a Nittany Lion, Samantha Tutelman got off to an impressive start finishing with five singles victories on the season. After dropping her first collegiate match she went on to win her next four advancing to the back draw championship against Blair Shankle of Baylor. She also competed at the Yale Invite winning one singles and one doubles match. Taking on a larger role this year, Katherine Whiteaway notched four singles victories and added three more in doubles matching her totals from the previous fall in three fewer matches. Whiteaway impressed at the Cissie Leary Invite winning three consecutive matches to earn a spot in the back draw final. Teaming with Sivan Krems of Princeton, she also won four matches advancing to the semifinals in the main draw. Devan McCluskey and Jacqueline Zuhse both brought home wins at the Racquet Club Invite to begin the fall. McCluskey won three consecutive matches in the back draw of singles while Zuhse advanced to the second round of main draws in both the singles and doubles tournamant. The Nittany Lions as a team finished the fall an even .500 in both singles and doubles competition. COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE As a member of the Big Ten, the Nittany Lions will continually face some of the toughest competition in the nation. Seven members of the Big Ten, not including Penn State, finished last season in the Top 75 of the ITA rankings. 13 of Penn State’s 23 opponents for the 2014 season finished the season in the ITA Top 75. Penn State will play nine of their scheduled 13 ranked teams away from University Park, Pa. RECRUITING Penn State continues its outlook on recruiting by finding athletes that are able to succeed on and off the court. “It is imperative that the coaching staff recruit players who have a strong desire to improve and develop their game to the next level,” said Denny Wine. “We are looking for studentathletes who love the challenges of the game and who expect growth in their game. The Penn State family focuses on the complete student-athlete. The Penn State tennis facilities are first-rate. In addition to the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center which houses four Decoturf courts, a state-of-the-art outdoor facility opened in September of 1998. The second-to-none facility was named the USTA Outstanding Tennis Facility Award in 1999, just one year after its opening.

Neither of the Sarni’s is a Penn State graduate, although they have been supporters of academic and athletic programs at the University and both have had children attend Penn State.

The Sarni Tennis Center is a $2.3 million facility that features seven lighted Plexi-cushion courts including a stadium court with seating for 1,000 fans; a team clubhouse with locker rooms, meeting and video rooms; and a racket stringing area. Plans are underway to purchase a major scoreboard to enhance the facility.

In addition to the gift from the Sarni family, approximately $500,000 in University funding went into the project, which will also provide for student use of the facility.

The addition of this wonderful factility now means that Penn State can enter bids to host major collegiates championships. State-of-the-art stadium lighting also allows for the Nittany Lions to schedule evening matches, host large tournaments and build a sense of excitement about Penn State tennis going into the future. Vincent and Sandra Sarni got the ball rolling for the facility with their gift of $675,000. Vincent Sarni, a retired chairman and chief executive officer of PPG Industries, and his wife are tennis enthusiasts.
