PEGULA ICE ARENA HOME OF PENN STATE HOCKEY Pegula Ice Arena, which broke ground in early February 2012, features two ice surfaces: a main rink, home to Penn State’s varsity hockey programs, and a community rink. The main arena seats 5,782 fans, including a 1,000-seat student section. The two-sheet facility is home to the Nittany Lions beginning with the 2013-14 season. The building hosts a 5,000-square foot weight room, hydrotherapy training room, steam room, team lounge and locker room area. When visitors come to Hockey Valley, they will experience some of the best amenities college hockey has to offer. Pegula Ice Arena has an interactive history of Penn State Hockey, as well as concession stands, suites, loge boxes and club seats. In addition, the arena’s ability to house state-ofthe-art media and broadcasting facilities will allow it to host National Hockey League and American Hockey League games, bringing hockey’s best to Hockey Valley. The Centre County community will also be able to take advantage of the community rink, which will be open approximately 360 days per year for public use. The rink will seat 300 fans, feature eight locker rooms and host local youth hockey, university recreation and skating programs. The facility was brought to fruition by an initial $88 million donation—the largest in University history—from Terry and Kim Pegula, who, through their gift, helped Penn State realize its goal of Division I hockey. At the ceremonial groundbreaking on April 20, 2012, the Pegulas added $14 million to the project to lift the total donation to $102 million. Pegula Ice Arena is located on University Drive near Curtin Road across from the Bryce Jordan Center. The Penn State men’s team officially opens the building on Oct. 10 against Army before the women host Union on Oct. 18.
“Pegula Ice Arena is a world-class facility in every respect. It makes the student-athlete experience even more amazing, while giving fans a great game day experience.” Josh Brandwene Penn State Head Coach

ASSISTANT COACHES GINA KEARNS
CASEY MCCULLION
ASSISTANT COACH Second Year BOSTON UNIVERSITY ‘09
ASSISTANT COACH Second Year HOLY CROSS ‘07
Instrumental to Penn State’s recruiting and offensive efforts, Gina Kearns enters her second season as assistant coach in 2013-14. Kearns guided freshman winger Shannon Yoxheimer to an AllCollege Hockey America Rookie Team honor. Yoxheimer tallied 14 goals, 17 assists and 31 points during Penn State’s inaugural campaign. Kearns, a former Boston University standout, was introduced as assistant coach on June 21, 2011. “I am incredibly excited to have Gina in the Penn State hockey family,” head coach Josh Brandwene said. “Gina’s experience as a player in the first four years of a brand new college program, her oustanding leadership ability and coaching experience make her a terrific member of the staff. She is a fantastic role model for the women in our program.” Prior to Penn State, Kearns spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Neumann University, where she helped lead the team to a 16-7-4 record in 2010-11. At Boston University, the Norwood, Pa. native was a member of the university’s first NCAA Division I team. She became the program’s all-time leading scorer as she notched 52 goals and 50 assists during her four-year career. Kearns was the first Terrier to tally more than 50 goals and 100 points and is the only three-year captain in school history. Kearns led the Princeton Tiger Lilies to a bronze medal at the 2005 USA Hockey U-19 Nationals. She played boys’ ice hockey at Interboro High School, where she was a senior captain, and totaled 121 points in 51 games, including 81 goals. Kearns and her fiancee, Bill McLaughlin, reside in State College.
Entering her second season as assistant coach in 2013-14, Casey McCullion is vital to the Nittany Lion effort in goal as well as recruiting. A former Holy Cross starting goaltender and New England prep school coach, McCullion joined the Penn State coaching staff as an assistant coach on June 4, 2012. McCullion tutored Penn State goaltender Nicole Paniccia through an amazing inaugural campaign as the junior saved 1,028 shots, which ranked second in NCAA Division I. In addition to Paniccia, McCullion oversaw the growth of freshman stopper Celine Whitlinger, who posted a .938 save percentage, making 377 saves in 10 appearances. McCullion came to Penn State with four years of coaching experience at the New England prep school level. From 2008-10, she worked alongside head coach Josh Brandwene at Kingswood Oxford (Conn.) as an assistant coach for goaltending. McCullion was then elevated to head coach for the 2010-11 season when Brandwene took over the boys’ program. Prior to working at Kingswood Oxford, she served as an assistant coach at Deerfield Academy (Mass.) in 2007-08. A highly successful goaltending coach, McCullion instructed three netminders who participated in USA Hockey Select Player Development Camps. While at Deerfield she worked closely with Shenae Lundberg, who captured the gold medal at the 2011 world championship with the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team. McCullion has also worked as a coach for the Ed Snider Youth Foundation and served as a goaltending instructor at Wyvern Hockey Academy. A four-year letterwinner at Holy Cross, McCullion earned the Rev. Francis J. Hart Memorial Award for commitment, leadership and performance. The former goaltender and 2007 graduate was also tabbed an ECAC East All-Academic Team member from 2005-07.

Prior to Utica, Dawes spent his freshman year, 200809, at Vermont as a student video coordinator and director of hockey operations. SAME LIONS, #newden
PENN STATE PREVIEW The Nittany Lion women’s hockey team heads into year two with 98.6 percent of its team scoring intact and all three of its shot-stoppers returning to the fold. If last year’s inaugural season was about defying the odds, this season is about taking advantage of the opportunities given by a $90 million, state-of-the-art Pegula Ice Arena, the sparkling home of Penn State Hockey.
GOALTENDING
Penn State’s greatest strength starts in net with the dynamic duo of Nicole Paniccia and Celine Whitlinger. The Nittany Lions will again rely on strong goaltending to keep them in games against more experienced teams. Paniccia made 1,028 stops in her junior campaign to rank second in Division I, averaging 38.1 saves per game. Whitligner appeared in 10 games and stopped nearly 94 percent of the shots on goal, averaging 37.7 saves per game. Brooke Meyer returns for her sophomore season and provides depth at the position as she didn’t allow a goal in 47 minutes of play in 2012-13.
DEFENSE
Powered by the always-aggressive Jordin Pardoski, the Nittany Lion defense returns seven of eight from a year ago. In that group of seven, Pardoski, Paige Jahnke, Jeanette Bateman and Lindsay Reihl appeared in all 35 games last year. Pardoski led all defenders with 10 points and 40 penalty minutes, while Jahnke helped on eight goals. Sarah Wilkie (Ashby, Mass.) saw significant time in 27 games, while Stephanie Walkom proved solid down the stretch, earning ice time and the team’s most improved player award. Madison Smiddy looks to reprise her 201213 campaign when she tallied seven points in 15 games with a plus-three rating. Joining the fold is freshman Kelly Seward who is the tallest Nittany Lion blueliner at 5-9.
OFFENSE
Led by 2012-13 All-CHA Rookie Team honoree Shannon Yoxheimer, the Penn State offense returns 68 of 69 goals scored. Yoxheimer led the team in goals (14), assists (17), points (31), game-winning goals (3) and shots (169). Joining the prolific Yoxheimer are linemates Taylor Gross and Jess Desorcie, who sported 22and 18-point campaigns, respectively. Hannah Hoenshell and Jill Holdcroft add a scoring punch as the fourth- and fifth-best point getters last season. Hoenshell netted nine goals including the program’s first hat trick last season, while Holdcroft was deadly on the power play, slotting home six tallies on the advantage en route to her 10 goals, which ranked second on the team. Adding vital offensive depth are the likes of Emily Laurenzi, Birdie Shaw, Jenna Welch, Micayla Catanzariti and Kendra Rasmussen who combined for 17 goals, 18 assists and 35 points. Rounding out the returning forward group are Tess Weaver, Darby Kern, Katie Murphy and Cara Mendelson. Weaver notched three points in 29 games, while Kern, the tallest player on the team at 5-11, earned a regular spot in the lineup midway through last season. Three anticipated freshmen forwards— Amy Petersen, Laura Bowman and Sarah Nielsen—will look to earn ice time this season. Petersen and Bowman teamed up for the past three Minnesota high school titles, while Nielsen led her Edina team to the finals twice.
site of the program’s first game and win on the ice, on Oct. 4-5 and at Quinnipiac (Oct. 11-12). Penn State returns to Hockey Valley to open Pegula Ice Arena with an eight-game home stand against Union (Oct. 18-19), New Hampshire (Oct. 26-27), Robert Morris (Oct. 31-Nov. 1) and Syracuse (Nov. 9-10) will be the first women’s opponents on the Pegula ice. A four-game road trip brings Penn State to CHA foes RIT (Nov. 15-16) and Lindenwood (Nov. 22-23) before the final home game of the fall semester against Maine (Nov. 30). Penn State’s two games at NCAA Frozen Four semifinalist Mercyhurst (Dec. 6-7) close out the semester slate. In the new year, Penn State travels to traditional Big Ten rival Ohio State (Jan. 3-4), which represents PSU’s first games against a WCHA foe. A home series with Colgate (Jan. 10-11) precedes trips to Syracuse (Jan. 24-25) and Princeton (Jan. 28). Penn State’s regular season home schedule is capped with six straight against CHA teams: RIT (Jan. 31-Feb. 1), Lindenwood (Feb. 8-9) and Mercyhurst (Feb. 15-16). PSU’s 2013-14 regular season concludes at Robert Morris (Feb. 21-22). The CHA Tournament will follow the same format as last season’s with all six teams qualifying. The top two teams will receive byes into the semifinals hosted by the No. 1 seed, while the bottom four teams will play a best-of-three series from Feb. 28 to March 2. The semifinals and final will take place March 7-8.
SCHEDULE
Season two brings a revamped schedule that raises the bar for the Nittany Lion program. Along with the 20-game College Hockey America schedule, Penn State will play 14 nonconference games entirely comprised of fullfledged Division I squads in prestigious conferences like Hockey East, ECAC and WCHA. The opening four games on the road see the Lions revisit Vermont’s Gutterson Fieldhouse,

COLLEGE HOCKEY AMERICA HISTORY
Penn State —along with Lindenwood and RIT—ushered in a new era of collegiate women’s hockey when the three new teams competed in College Hockey America (CHA) during the 2012-13 season. Now the league boasts six schools: charter member Mercyhurst College, Robert Morris University (joined 2005), Syracuse University (joined 2008), Lindenwood University, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Penn State University. For the second straight season, each school will play the other five schools four times (two home, two away) for a total of 20 CHA matchups. The 2014 CHA tournament will run from Feb. 28-March 8 (see bracket lower right). The six-team tournament format allows the CHA stability for the long haul and for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. On the current track, the CHA champion will be eligible for an automatic bid during for the 2014-15 season. The CHA represents all three of Pennsylvania’s Division I teams (Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, Penn State), while stretching north to New York (RIT, Syracuse) and west to Missouri (Lindenwood). Mercyhurst has ruled the roost winning the regular-season CHA title in every campaign for 11 straight years. The only blip in its dominance is RMU’s 2012 tournament title.

PRESIDENT P
RODNEY ERICKSON PENN STATE PRESIDENT MINNESOTA ‘68 (B.A.), ‘70 (M.A.) WASHINGTON ‘73 (Ph.D.)
Rodney A. Erickson assumed responsibilities as the 17th President of The Pennsylvania State University on Nov. 9, 2011. Previously, Erickson served as Penn State’s executive vice president and provost since July 1, 1999. As provost, he was chief academic officer of the University, responsible for administration of the University’s resident instruction, research and continuing education, and for the general welfare of the faculty and students. As executive vice president, Erickson served as the chief executive officer in the president’s absence and was centrally involved in most aspects of University operations. Erickson is deeply committed to Penn State and to fulfilling the University’s mission of excellence in education, groundbreaking research, creative activity and service to those in Pennsylvania, the nation and the world. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of academia, business, and government to advance education and create new knowledge to benefit the community at large. He is a highly respected academic leader, and he has chaired numerous task forces and special committees, including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, which is the academic arm of the Big Ten universities. Erickson is a former Fulbright Research Scholar in the United Kingdom and a Simon Senior Fellow at the University of Manchester. His research has focused on the spatial dimensions of urban and regional economies, international trade, and economic development policies. Erickson holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Minnesota, and was awarded a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Washington in 1973. He began his academic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining the faculty at Penn State in 1977. He was promoted to professor in both geography and business administration in 1984. He was named dean of the Graduate School in July 1995 and, in March 1997, he assumed the additional responsibilities of vice president for research. Among his other administrative assignments at Penn State, Erickson served as head of the Department of Geography in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and as director of the Center for Regional Business Analysis and associate director of the Division of Research in the Smeal College of Business. Erickson formerly chaired the meetings of the Academic Leadership Council, which provides advice and counsel to the president on academic matters. ulty Senate and Senate Council. He has been the leader of many University task forces in recent years, including the Task Force on Tuition, the University Cost Savings Task Force, the University Strategic Planning Council, and the Academic Program and Administrative Services Review Core Council, which was the group charged with identifying millions of dollars in permanent cost savings and nontuition revenue sources for the University for the coming years. President Erickson was named an Honorary Alumnus by the Penn State Alumni Association in 2010 for his contributions to improving the academic stature of the University and enhancing the success of students.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS AD
DAVE JOYNER DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS PENN STATE ‘72 (B.A.) PENN STATE ‘76 (M.D.)
David M. Joyner was named Penn State’s Director of Athletics on Jan. 21, 2013. He had served as the Acting Director of Athletics since Nov. 16, 2011. A two-sport All-American and Academic All-American at Penn State, Joyner earned his B.S. in 1972 and his M.D. from Penn State’s College of Medicine in 1976. “Dave Joyner has provided outstanding leadership in Intercollegiate Athletics, as evidenced by the strong academic performance of our athletes and the top 10 finish in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings,” said Penn State President Rodney Erickson. “I look forward to continuing to work with Dave to further the success of our student-athletes and the Penn State athletics program.” Joyner oversees an athletic department with more than 800 student-athletes and 300 staff members that expanded to 31 varsity sports in 2012-13 with the launch of NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey. Penn State’s 31 sports are tied for third-highest in the nation among Football Bowl Subdivision institutions. Joyner’s mantra for Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics is IAC—Integrity, Academics and Championships—and the 2012-13 academic year provided a substantial list of accomplishments in all three core areas. In his first full year as Athletic Director, he provided the leadership for one of the most successful years in Penn State’s glorious history of student-athlete academic and athletic success. Penn State student-athletes captured a school-record 11 conference championships in 2012-13, including a record eight Big Ten titles, the most of any conference institution. Twenty-one of 31 teams were represented in their respective NCAA Championship, with the wrestling team capturing a third consecutive national title. A Penn State-record eight head coaches were selected Big Ten Coach-of-the-Year in 2012-13, including football coach Bill O’Brien. Joyner led the search that identified and hired O’Brien in January 2012. Penn State was No. 6 in the final 2012-13 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, its highest finish in 10 years. A school-record 296 Penn State studentathletes earned Academic All-Big Ten ac-
colades during the 2012-13 academic year, crushing the previous record of 261. Six Penn State student-athletes attained Capital One/ CoSIDA Academic All-America® accolades in 2012-13, including three first-team honorees. Six teams compiled perfect multi-year NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores of 1,000 and the average multi-year APR score for Penn State’s varsity teams was 984, easily above the Division I average of 974. In 2003, as chairman of the Penn State Athletic Campaign Committee, he led a fiveyear effort to raise $130 million for the athletic department, far surpassing the campaign’s $100 million goal. During the same period, as a member of the Executive Committee of the University’s Leadership Gifts Committee, he helped achieve the University’s goal to raise $745 million. He also has been a member of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Capital Campaign Committee. A member of the Penn State Board of Trustees from 2000 until the date of his appointment with Intercollegiate Athletics, Joyner was honored in 1992 as a Distinguished Alumnus of Penn State. He currently is a member of the board of directors of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Joyner’s work with the U.S. Olympic Committee includes service as head physician to the United States’ teams at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games, the 1991 World University Games and the 1989 United States Olympic Festival. He is a past chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Society. Joyner served as the chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Committee and the vice-chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Anti-Doping Committee. He currently is a member of the medical commission of the Pan American Sports Organization. An offensive tackle from 1969-71, Joyner earned first-team All-America honors his senior season and was a team co-captain. He was instrumental in helping the Nittany Lions compile a cumulative 29-4 record, including an 11-0 mark in 1969, with victories in the 1970 Orange and 1972 Cotton bowls. Joyner also was a standout wrestler from 1970-72, gaining All-America honors by finishing as the
NCAA runner-up at heavyweight in 1971. Joyner was named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1971 and is one of a select group of individuals who have been inducted into the CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica Hall of Fame, which honors “those with the highest standards in college academics, athletics and in life beyond athletics.” Joyner also received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship as a Penn State student-athlete and was selected for the prestigious NCAA Silver Anniversary Award in 1997. Joyner was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1993. He earned his bachelor’s degree in science in 1972 and his M.D. from Penn State’s College of Medicine in 1976. Following residencies in general and orthopedic surgery at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and a stint in the World Football League, Joyner began a medical career with a sports medicine emphasis. Joyner’s sons, Andy and Matt, also played football while graduating from Penn State.
