Glon 32nd year at Penn State

Now entering his 32nd season with the Nittany and Lady Lions, Head Coach Wieslaw (Wes) R. Glon, joined the Penn State fencing program as an assistant coach in 1985. Since being on staff, Glon has been an integral part of Penn State’s fencing achievements, which include thirteen combined Men’s and Women’s NCAA Championships and nine second place finishes. Glon took the reins as Interim Head Coach in August 2013 and quickly set about the task of leading Penn State to its 13th NCAA Championship, an NCAA record. Glon led the Nittany Lion men’s team to a 22-3 overall record while the women compiled a 16-10 mark. He then led Penn State to the NCAA title as eight Nittany Lion fencers earned All-America honors, including then-sophomore Kaito Streets, who won the NCAA men’s sabre individual title. Glon was named 2014 Coach of the Year at Penn State and 2014 Coach of the Year by the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) for his efforts. He was permanently appointed to the Head Coach position in July 2014. At the time, Glon said: “It is an honor to be named the head coach of the most successful fencing program in the country. I will strive to continue the tradition of success and integrity that the Penn State fencing program is known for nationally. I look forward to the challenges ahead and to the opportunity to continue Penn State’s legacy of success.” In 2015, Glon led the men’s team to a 17-5 record while the women ended their season with a 15-8 mark. At the NCAA championship, the team finished in second place, with seven Nittany Lion fencers earning All-America honors. True freshman Andrew Mackiewicz became the newest NCAA men’s sabre individual champion.

HEAD COACH WES GLON

honors in sabre six times, between 1975 and 1981, and was bronze medalist at the 1979 World University Games in Mexico City. Glon earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in physical education from the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw. In addition to fencing, his academic interests have included track and field, soccer, physical therapy and sports medicine. From 1977-81, Glon was assistant professor of physical education at the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw. He left Poland in 1981, and for two years lived in Vienna, Austria where he assisted with coaching the Austrian National Team. He immigrated to the United States in 1983 and served two years as the assistant men’s coach at William & Mary College where he worked with the saber team. Since immigrating to the U.S., he has become very active in the fencing community. He is the founder of three fencing clubs in Richmond,Va and in the State College, Pa area. He is also the founder of the Central Pa Fencing Scholastic League with a number of elementary and middle school programs. Coach Glon is one of the top fencing officials in the world in all three weapons. He is involved with the United States Fencing Association and has served for the last four years on its Board of Directors as Elite Coach Director. Glon is also on the Collegiate Mid-Atlantic / South Regional Fencing Committee, which he has chaired in the past. Fencing Master Glon has coached many U.S. national teams, including teams for the Junior and Senior World Championships (1989-1998), the Pan American Games (1991), and the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. In recent years, Wes Glon has been involved with the U.S. National Team in different capacities: as Coach, Team Captain and Chef de Mission. Over the years, many of his athletes have represented the U.S. on the international arena and have won top honors in their respective weapons. In 2013, he was named Team Captain for both the Men’s and Women’s National Teams and has lead them to be a dominating power house in the fencing world. Glon is married and has two daughters. One of his daughters, Nicole, was the women’s captain on the 2014 Nittany Lions fencing team and helped lead Penn State to the NCAA crown.

In 2016, the men’s team finished with a 22-6 record and the women’s team an 18-10 record. At the NCAA championship, the team finished in sixth place, with sophomore Andrew Mackiewicz winning his second title in sabre and Jessie Radanovich her first in epee. All together six Nittany Lions fencers earned All-American honors. A native of Poland, Glon was a very accomplished fencer on the Polish National Team, representing his country at many international competitions. Abashidze

Coach George “Gia” Abashidze is returning for his eighth year as assistant coach and brings a long list of collegiate and international coaching experience with him. A former member of the USSR’s National Foil Team, Abashidze’s team competed in numerous international tournaments, with Abashidze winning his nation’s foil crown. Before coming to the United States, Abashidze coached the Georgian National Team. Abashidze came to the United States and coached club fencing in Portland, Ore. before taking an assistant coaching position at Ohio State. While in Columbus, Abashidze helped Ohio State’s foilists win five NCAA individual titles. Among his athletes are Monique DeBruin, David Willette, Olympian Daniel Gomez and Individual World Champion Miles Chamley-Watson. Abashidze also coached 2008 Olympians Hanna Thompson and Doris Willette, who won the team foil Silver Medal. Abashidze and his wife, Ia, have three children (Guram,who fenced at Penn State; Anna and Sophia). The Abashidzes reside in State College.

Sintchinov

Coach Sintchinov is joining the Nittany Lions for his third year as assistant coach. Sintchinov has an extensive fencing resume and has been a professional coach since 1976. He also has the recognition of being a Master of Sport in Fencing. During his international coaching tenure, Sintchinov was the head coach of the Belarus, Egypt and Tunisia National Teams. In 1991, Sintchinov was named Honored Coach of Belarus for his time with the team. He also served as the head coach of the 2000 Egypt Olympic Team. Sintchinov was a sought-after private and club coach from 20042011 before making the move into collegiate coaching, joining the Ohio State Staff in 2011. Sintchinov spent three years in Columbus as an assistant coach, helping guide the program to the 2012 NCAA Championships. Sintchinov studied at the Belarussian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport, specializing in coaching and teaching.

Johanna Picard Hall is in her fourth season as assistant coach. A native of France, Hall received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Penn State. She fenced foil for the Nittany Lions from 1984 to 1988 and was team captain her junior and senior years. While on the team, she compiled a 160-37 record, finishing her career with an 81% winning percentage. Her senior year, she placed 4th at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals and 19th at the NCAA Championships. In addition to coaching, Hall assists Head Coach Glon with the administrative duties of the team and focuses her efforts on compliance, recruiting, alumni relations and community outreach. Hall and her husband, Ken, have three sons and one daughter. They live in Boalsburg, PA. 6

All-American 2014, 2015,2016 2016 Women’s Epee NCAA National Champion AS A JUNIOR IN 2015-16: Radanovich started her third season as a Nittany Lion strong, going undefeated for ten matches. Radanovich finished the season with a record of 62-11. Radanovich competed at the Mid-Atlantic/ Southern Regionals where she placed third. Radanovich went on to compete at the NCAA Championships where she came in first place. Radanovich was the 2016 Women’s Epee NCAA National Champion. AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2014-15: Radanovich started out her second season as a Nittany Lion strong, with five of her first six contests ending in undefeated wins. Radanovich continued to find success throughout the season, tallying up 12 undefeated duels. Radanovich finished the season with a record of 45-8, which qualified her for the 2015 NCAA Championships. Radanovich competed hard in the championships and secured 5th place in the women’s epee event. Radanovich was a 2015 All-American. AS A FRESHMAN IN 2013-14: Radanovich had a stellar first year as a Nittany Lion. She was a stand-out fencer on the team besides the fact that it was her freshman year. She went 51-24 in the regular season and went undefeated in 10 of her duals. She qualified to compete at Regionals finishing 4th and qualified herself for NCAA National Championships. At the Championships, she went on to the final four where she ultimately finished tied for 3rd.

Mackiewicz ended the regular season with a record of 25-7 qualifying him to compete at the Mid-Atlantic/ Southern Regionals where he came out on top with first place. At the NCAA Championships Mackiewicz took home first place and the title of 2016 NCAA Men’s Sabre Champion. AS A FRESHMAN IN 2014-15: Mackiewicz was a force to be reckoned with his first season as a Nittany Lion. In just his first three starts, Mackiewicz went 3-0. By the end of the season, Mackiewicz would tally nine total shutout performances. Mackiewicz ended the regular season with a stellar 32-8 record, propelling him into the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regionals. Mackiewicz placed first at Regionals, qualifying him for the NCAA Championships. At the Championships, Mackiewicz was virtually unstoppable, taking home first place and securing the title of 2015 NCAA Men’s Sabre Champion. HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Andrew Mackiewicz comes to Penn State from Westwood, Mass. He previously fenced for Zeta Fencing Club under head coach Zoran Tulum. Mackiewicz is majoring in marketing.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Jessie Radanovich previously fenced for FFA and LAIFC club teams under head coaches Vladamir Ostatnigrosh and Gago Demirchian. Radanovich is currently a kinesiology major at Penn State. Radanovich chose Penn State for its great fencing program.

O’Neill-Lyublinsky went on to compete in the Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regionals where she placed 2nd, qualifying her for the NCAA Championships where she finished in 20th place. AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2014-15: O’Neill-Lyublinsky had another stellar year with the Nittany Lions in 2014-15, ending the year with a winning record of 43-14. Throughout the season O’Neill-Lyublinsky tallied nine shutout performances and celebrated an eight match win streak. AS A FRESHMAN IN 2013-14: O’Neill-Lyublinsky saw plenty of action in her freshman year. She went 48-27 in the regular season. Her hard work qualified her Regionals where she placed 7th. She went on to compete at the NCAA National Championships where she placed 13th overall. HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Jessica O’Neill-Lyubinsky is from North Salem,New York. She participated in club fencing at the Fencing Academy of West Chester. O’Neil-Lyubinsky intends on majoring in psychology or premed.

While Tang struggled the second half of the season, he put up a fair performance with many bouts decided by a single point. Tang picked up another undefeated duel against Harvard to combine for four undefeated performances and finished the season with a 24-30 record. In the post-season, Tang took first place at the Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regionals and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Tang placed 19th at the NCAA Championships.
