HEAD COACH CHRIS CAGLE Cagle’s first season as Head Coach of the women’s tennis program was no easy test as the team battled their way around injuries throughout the duration of the spring.Starting freshman at the top two spots in singles for the majority of the dual season, Cagle led Dasha Sapogova to All-Big Ten Second Team honors after winning 15 matches despite only competing in the spring. The 15 wins are the most by a freshman since Lauren Holzberg had 16 in 2006. Cagle coached the Nittany Lions to their first win over Nebraska in program history when the team rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to knock of the Huskers 4-3, with Sapogova taking the clinching match at No. 1 singles in three sets.The Nittany Lions got off to a quick start under the tutelage of Cagle winning their first three matches of the season over a two-day span. His first conference win came against Wisconsin at home when Katherine Whiteaway knocked off Sydney Rider in a grueling three-set match to break the tie and give the Nittany Lions a 4-3 victory.Cagle spent three years as the assistant coach to Jeff Zinn’s men’s team, who went 11-14 in his first year at Penn State and saw the duo of Jason Lee and Russell Bader selected to compete in the NCAA Doubles Tournament.

Cagle became the chairman for Junior Competition for North Carolina Tennis, served on the Southern Tennis Junior Competition Board, and the Winston-Salem Tennis, Inc. Board. He was the tournament director for the 2010 Boys’ 12 and Under National Clay Court Clay Court Championships. In 2010, Cagle received the Mary Milam Lifetime Achievement Award from North Carolina Tennis for his contributions to junior tennis. From 2004-06, Cagle served on the Cystic Fibrosis Tennis Auction Ball Committee. In 2006, he took the Co-Chair position for the auction ball, which raised over $100,000 to fight Cystic Fibrosis that year. Cagle resides in State College with his wife, Maria, and their 15-year-old son, Drew.

During his second season with the men’s team, the Nittany Lions finished 8-17. After Cagle’s third and final season with the mens team, the Nittany Lions held a program high ranking of No. 16 in the nation and finished at No.24. Cagle served one season as a volunteer assistant coach to Zinn at Wake Forest, where he played an active on-court role, helping the Demon Deacons reach the NCAA tournament. In 2011, Wake Forest posted a 14-12 record, notching their11th straight winning season. The Demon Deacons won 10 matches against nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-0 win over No. 30 Wisconsin to open the season and a 4-0 victory against No. 46 Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Before joining the Demon Deacons, Cagle established himself as one of the top junior tennis coaches, coaching players to 10 national junior titles. He has also coached players in all four Junior Grand Slams, and twice coached a player in the main draw of a Grand Slam. In addition, Cagle has coached and trained female players that have won NCAA Singles, Doubles and Team Championships including the MVP of a NCAA Championship team. Cagle, originally from Greensboro, N.C., played as a member of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington men’s tennis program from 1989-1993. He was the first two-time captain in North Carolina-Wilmington men’s tennis program history. In 2009, he reached the No. 1 ranking in United States men’s 30s singles competition.

ASSISTANT COACH ALEXANDRA ANGHELESCU Alexandra

Former Atlantic Coast Conference standout Alex Anghelescu joined the Penn State Women’s Tennis family as an assistant coach in June 2018. Anghelescu comes to Happy Valley after both playing and coaching at two ACC schools. Anghelescu most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina. This past season, the Tar Heels won the ITA National Indoor Championships, the 2018 ACC Tournament, were ranked No. 1 in the nation for 10 straight weeks, finished the season with five All-Americans, had five players take part in the NCAA Individual Championships and had a doubles squad advance to the NCAA semifinals. Prior to joining the Tar Heels staff, Anghelescu served as a certified Tennis Professional working with junior players of all levels at Life Time Fitness in Alpharetta, Ga., and was 2018 USTA National Spring Team Championships Coach as well. She also worked with the USTA Southern Section High Performance Camp as a Selected Coach. Anghelescu spent her collegiate playing days at both Georgia and Georgia Tech. She achieved an ITA top ten ranking in doubles while at Georgia Tech, helping the team to a consistent top 15 national ranking and a national round of 16 appearances at both the ITA National Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships. Anghelescu also reached the round of 16 as an individual in the NCAA Championships. She reached a career high of No. 935 on the WTA Tour as a professional in singles action and a No. 957 ranking as a pro on the WTA Tour in doubles. Her top win in juniors was a victory over U.S. Open Champion Sloane Stephens.

SEASON PREVIEW RETURNING PLAYERS The Penn State women’s tennis team returns six players from its 2017-18 roster is looking to improve upon previous seasons. Junior captains Samantha Smith and Shannon Hanley will be leading the team this spring as the Nittany Lions look to incorporate four newcomers to the squad.

NEW ADDITIONS Penn State has four new additions to the team with three freshman and a sophomore transfer joining the team. Chelsea Sawyer joins the team from the University of Tennessee and freshman Gracey Hirsch, Olivia Ryan and Sydney Weinberg will be competing in their first collegiate seasons. Sawyer hails from Clemmons, N.C. where she was ranked No. 27 in her recruiting class. While at Tennessee she competed in the NCAA tournament in doubles. Hirsch hails from Cincinnati, Ohio where she received All-State accolades in 2016 and 2017. Additionally, she was the Cincinnati Enquirer Division II Singles Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017. Ryan is from Victoria, Australia where she was the No. 8 ranked singles player in Australia for the 18 under age group. While competing in Australia she garnered two Australian Adult Singles titles and Six Australian Adult Doubles Titles. Weinberg is a Winchester, Mass. native who was a fourstar recruit in high school. She was named the USTA New England Sportsman of the year in 2016.

FALL REVIEW The Penn State women’s tennis team is preparing for the spring season after coming off of a competitive fall season. Junior Samantha Smith led the team with 11 singles wins and sophomore Olivia Rohrbacher had a team-high nine doubles wins. Sophomore Chelsea Sawyer reached the finals at the Hokie Fall Invite before falling to Liberty’s Lara Soares, 6-0, 0-6, 7-5. The four freshman displayed a lot of energy in the fall highlighted by Sydney Weinberg reaching the finals at the Cissie Leary Invitational. The experience from the returners was also shown throughout the fall season. Sophomore classmates Rohrbacher and Frederikke Svarre reached the quarterfinals as a doubles duo at ITA Regionals. The team will look to start the spring strong using a six match homestand early in the season to its advantage. COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE Looking into the spring schedule, the Nittany Lions have 12 Big Ten matches and 11 non-conference matches. The Nittany Lions will begin the spring with six nonconference home matches before hitting the road to take on their first Big Ten opponent, Rutgers. After a brief visit to Rutgers the team will return home to face Cornell before traveling to Huntington, W.Va. to take on Furman and Marshall. They will then travel to Big Ten opponent Iowa and Columbia. Over spring break the team will take on VCU at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. After playing VCU the squad will get into the meat of the Big Ten season where they will finish off the season with 10 Big Ten matches.

Shannon Hanley Junior Kensington, Md.

2018 FALL: Competed in two tournaments throughout the fall season, including four singles matches and five doubles matches. Made it to the round of 16 in doubles at ITA Regionals with partner Samantha Smith.

JUNIOR CAREER: Ranked No. 56 nationally and holds a No. 3 rank in the state of Maryland. Shannon also holds achievements in the USTA Mid-Atlantic Region with a rank of No. 2 in girls 18 singles, two National Open doubles titles, singles and doubles champion of Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) her freshman, junior, and senior years, and was a team member of Washington Posts First team All-Met Spring, 2015. Hanley was undefeated in all four years of her high school play in singles action. She was a member of the National Honors Society, a Student Ambassador member, and a member of her Student Government at her high school.

2017-18 SPRING SEASON- SOPHOMORE: Played in 21 singles matches in the spring and 16 doubles matches. Singles matches were highlighted by a win over Mary Ann Rompf of Wisconsin, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, to secure a 4-3 victory over the Badgers. Hanley and Samantha Smith capped off spring doubles by securing a win over No. 48 Daniela Novak and Sasha Belaya of Illinois, 7-6 (7-5). 2017 FALL: Saw action in three tournaments. Had eight singles matches, winning four. Singles wins were highlighted at the UNCW Invitational where she picked up three wins. Paired with Bennett Dunn in doubles to post a winning record of 4-3, good for second most doubles wins as a pair on the team. 2016-17 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Hanley recorded 36 singles matches and 26 doubles matches throughout the season. Had four Big Ten singles wins against Wisconsin, Nebraska, Maryland and Purdue. Had three Big Ten doubles wins against Minnesota, Iowa and Purdue. 2016 FALL: Made 15 singles and seven doubles appearances. Picked up doubles wins with partner Samantha Smith against Drexel University and College of William and Mary. Recorded a singles win against No. 8 Montana Moore of No. 1 Tyler JC 6-2, 6-3. Defeated Christina Makarova of No. 10 Duke University 6-3, 0-6, 1-0.

JUNIOR CAREER: Ranked No. 54 in the nation in the Senior Recruiting Class. Holds multiple tennis achievements including three time High School State Team Championships and four time Individual Doubles State Championships. Smith has been selected to represent North Carolina at the Southern Junior Cup for five years in a row, and holds two southern Winter Closed singles championships. Served as President of DECA and is a member of the National Honors Society.

2018 FALL: Competed in team-high 16 singles matches and 11 doubles matches. Smith won 11 singles matches, a team-high. At ITA Regionals Smith knocked off three opponents en route to a quarterfinal finish in singles. In doubles at ITA Regionals, Smith paired up with Shannon Hanley to advance to the round of 16. 2017-18 SPRING SEASON- SOPHOMORE: Competed in 20 singles matches and 16 doubles matches…led the team in singles wins… posted a 5-6 record in Big Ten singles matches and had a 4-4 mark in doubles matches… singles wins were highlighted by a victory over No. 110 Asuka Kawai, 6-4, 6-2… Smith and Shannon Hanley posted a 7-6 (7-5) victory over No. 48 Daniela Novak and Sasha Belaya in doubles play. 2017 FALL: Appeared in three tournaments, seeing six singles matches and five doubles matches. Posted a winning doubles record, going 3-2 overall. Picked up doubles wins with two different partners including Hanna Wikberg and Gabby O’Gorman. 2018 FALL: Appeared in four tournaments, racking up 13 singles and 11 doubles appearances. In her first tournament of the fall season at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, O’Gorman advanced to the quarterfinals, falling to the eventual champion, Tyler Junior College’s Anna Brogan, 6-2, 6-3. O’Gorman and Chelsea Sawyer are tied for a team-high five doubles wins as a pair.

2018 FALL: Competed in 11 singles and a team-high 14 doubles matches across four tournaments. Paired with three different doubles partners in the fall, Rohrbacher owns the highest number of doubles wins on the team with nine overall. At ITA Regionals, Rohrbacher and Frederikke Svarre advanced to quarterfinals in the doubles main draw. When paired with Olivia Ryan, the duo tied for most wins as a doubles duo with five.

2017-18 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Competed in 19 singles matches and 16 doubles matches in the spring. Went 5-6 in No. 1 singles and went 4-5 in doubles conference matches. Defeated teams on two top-50 ranked squads in No. 25 UCF and No. 50 Purdue in doubles.

2017-18 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Competed in seven singles matches and 10 doubles matches in the spring. Went 1-2 in Big Ten singles matches and 2-2 in conference doubles matches. Clinched a match win over Towson, 4-3, with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win against Alexa Martinez on court No. 5.

2017 FALL: Had a team-high five singles wins in the fall. Tied for second most singles appearances on the team with 10. Went 5-5 in singles and 4-4 in doubles over three tournaments. Took Meible Chi, ranked T100, of Duke, to the tiebreaker losing in a close 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 match.

Sawyer’s singles play was highlighted at the Hokie Fall Invite where she rattled off three straight-set wins to make the finals. In finals, she fell in a tight three-set match to Liberty’s Lara Soares, 6-0, 0-6, 7-5. In doubles, Sawyer paired up with Gabby O’Gorman to tie for a team-high five wins.

2018 FALL: Appeared in 13 singles matches and 12 doubles matches across four tournaments. Svarre’s doubles play was highlighted at ITA Regionals when she and Olivia Rohrbacher racked up four wins to advance to the quarterfinals. With eight doubles wins Svarre is tied for second most doubles wins on the team.

PRIOR TO PENN STATE: Joins the team as a sophomore after playing her freshman year at the University of Tennessee. At Tennessee, she went 12-4 in singles matches. In doubles, Sawyer competed in SEC regular season matches, SEC tournament matches and in the NCAA tournament. Sawyer was a five-star recruit in high school, ranking as high as No. 27 in her recruiting class. In the summer of 2018, Sawyer won her singles and doubles draws at the Oracle ITA Summer Circuit powered by UTR at Middle Tennessee State.

2017-18 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Competed in 21 singles matches and 14 doubles matches in the spring…took on four nationally ranked opponents… recorded a win at No. 1 singles against Indiana, defeating Madison Appel, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 5-3, retired in Big Ten singles action. 2017 FALL: Appeared in 13 singles matches, which was the most on the team. Had 10 doubles appearances over her four tournaments, with the second most doubles wins on the team with five. Picked up the most doubles wins of any pair with partner Hanna Wikberg, with five. Advanced to the round of 16 doubles at ITA Regionals, falling to the tournament’s No. 1 seed, with partner Wikberg. JUNIOR CAREER: Holds many achievements including earning her first two WTA ranking points in 2015 and earned her third WTA ranking point this year, also appeared on the world-ranking list. Svarre is also the 2014, 18U Danish Junior Champion in singles and the 2015, 18U Danish Junior Champion in singles and mixed doubles.

2018 FALL: Did not compete. 2017-18 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Competed in 14 singles and eight doubles matches in the spring…went 3-6 in conference play in singles, picking up wins against Wisconsin, Purdue and Indiana… went 1-1 in conference doubles, with a win against Illinois…clinched a match win against Navy, 4-3, with her victory on court No. 6, against Claudia Mackenzie, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. 2017 FALL: Appeared in 10 singles matches, tying for second most singles appearances on the team, over four tournaments. Saw action in a team-high 11 doubles matches posting a winning record of 6-5. Had the most doubles wins as a pair with Frederikke Svarre, with five. Advanced to the round of 16 in doubles at ITA Regionals with partner Svarre, only falling to the tournament’s No. 1 seed.

2018 FALL: Appeared in three tournaments, seeing action in 11 singles matches and five doubles matches. Hirsch made it to the semifinals in the Service Flight, at the Hokie Fall Invite, picking up two wins. JUNIOR CAREER: Hirsch was a three-star recruit that ranked as high as No. 203 in her recruiting class. In high school, she attained All-State accolades in 2016 and 2017, placed third in Ohio doubles in 2016 and 2017 and was a team finalist in the state of Ohio in 2015 and 2016. Hirsch was the Cincinnati Enquirer Division II Singles player of the Year in 2016 and 2017. She was also a recipient of the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award and Suzie Vokkell Award. Both awards highlight sportsmanship, character and integrity.

JUNIOR CAREER: Ranked as one of the top players in Sweden consistently as a junior player, Wikberg holds achievements as semifinalist in the SALK Open Tournament, Sweden’s biggest tournament, in singles and doubles in 2014, she was a semifinalist in Swedish Nationals in singles and runner-up in doubles. In 2015 and 2016, she won two ITF G4 doubles titles and was a two-time doubles quarterfinalist in ITF Futures Women’s Tournaments.

Olivia Ryan Freshman Victoria, Australia Major: Division of Undergraduate Studies

2018 FALL: Appeared in 11 singles and 12 doubles matches. Tied for the second most doubles wins on the team with eight. Made it to the quarterfinals in her flight at the Hokie Fall Invite. Partnering with Olivia Rohrbacher, the duo tied for a team-high five doubles wins. Ryan teamed up with Sydney Weinberg at ITA Regionals where the duo made it to the round of 32. JUNIOR CAREER: Ryan was ranked No. 8 in Australia for the 18 and under age group, and ranked as high as No. 2 in Victoria for her age group. She was also ranked No. 78 in Australia for Women’s Open age group. Ryan owns two Australian Adult Singles Titles and six Australian Doubles Titles. Additionally, Ryan was the captain of the Victoria state team in 2016.

Sydney Weinberg Freshman Winchester, Mass. Major: Division of Undergraduate Studies

2018 FALL: Competed in four tournaments, seeing action in 12 singles matches and eight doubles matches. Weinberg made it to the finals at the Cissie Leary Invitational in flight B singles. At the Cissie Leary Invitational, Weinberg had three wins that all went to a third set before falling in the finals to Penn’s Mimi Levine, 6-1, 6-2. When playing in three-set matches, Weinberg was a perfect 5-0. Weinberg teamed up with Olivia Ryan to make it to the round of 32 in doubles, at ITA Regionals. JUNIOR CAREER: Weinberg was a four-star recruit and ranked as high as No. 124 in her recruiting class. She trained at the MAC Tennis Academy, a USTA Regional Training Center. In her junior career, Weinberg was consistently ranked in the top five of the New England Section. Weinberg was a member of the 2017 New England National Team and a member of the New England Zone Team from age 11 on. She also received the USTA New England Sportsman of the year award in 2016.
