28th year at Penn State 11 National Championships Emmanuil G. Kaidanov (kigh-DAN-off) is a fencing master and head coach of the men's and women's fencing teams at Penn State. Kaidanov immigrated to the United States in 1979 from the Soviet Union, where he had competed as a world-class fencer and served as a coach. He was a candidate for the U.S.S.R. National team in saber from 1958 to 1964. Kaidanov has been a fencing coach for over 40 years and is in his 28th year at Penn State. He won his 600th career dual meet during the 2004-05 season and reached his 700th victory last season. Kaidanov led Penn State to its 11th NCAA team title in 2009, placing the Lions firmly at the top of the NCAA fencing world. In the decade of the '90's, his teams won back–to– back NCAA combined titles in 1990 and 1991 and finished second in 1992, 1993 and 1994. Penn State won a record six straight titles from 1995 to 2000. Penn State started the new decade in style with its sixth straight national championship (2000). After a second place finish in 2001, Penn State reclaimed the NCAA title with a superb effort in 2002. The Lions were runners-up in 2003, 2004 and 2006 before claiming the team title in 2007. After a fourth place finish in 2008, Penn State claimed another title in 2009.

During Kaidanov's tenure, the men's team has finished in the top three 24 out of 27 seasons, while the women's squad has improved from 10th place in 1986 to first place six times in the '90s. For these accomplishments, Kaidanov was honored as the 1990, 1991 NCAA and 1996 USFCA Coach-of-the-Year. He shared this honor with his assistant coach, Wes Glon.

The 2007 national champion in the foil, she took 2008 off to represent the United States in the Beijing Olympics. Last year, Willette made it two-for-two in national crowns, winning the foil title once again. This year, voted team captain, Willette will look to help guide the Penn State fencing team in its defense of its 2009 team title.

Lion Career

2008-09: Returning after an Olympic red-shirt, Willette stormed her way to a 28-4 regular season record before claiming yet another Mid-Atlantic/South Regional title. Looking to equal her performance as a true freshman at NCAAs, Willette thrilled the home crowd on Penn State’s own campus with an NCAA title-winning performance in March of 2009 to become a twotime NCAA national champion in the foil. 2007-08: Willette was red-shirted to compete in the World Fencing Championships.

2006-07: Doris Willette parlayed outstanding youth credentials into a perfect 33-0 run through the dual meet season as a true freshman in 2006-07. She then stormed the field at Regionals to claim the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Crown and was unstoppable at the 2007 NCAA Championships, claiming the individual women’s foil crown in her first trip to the tournament. The freshman All-American posted dual match records of 13-0, 14-0, 5-0 and 1-0. Willette was Penn State’s first freshman national champion since Katarzyna Trzopek won the epee title as a freshman in 2003.

High School/Junior Career

Willette was a member of the U.S. Junior World Team in both 2005 and 2006. She was a finalist each year and, on the way to the finals in 2006, she downed the current World Cup holder from Slovenia. She was a member of the U.S. Senior team at the 2006 World Championships as well.

Chinman was voted team captain by his teammates and will use his extensive experience to help Penn State in its defense of last year’s NCAA team title (the 11th in school history).

Lion Career

2008-09: Chinman was a rare two-weapon standout for Penn State last year, combining to post a 34-9 record in both the foil and the epee. His 16-6 mark in the foil led to a third place finish at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships. But two weeks after regionals, Chinman stormed his way to this third All-America medal and his first NCAA National championship.

2007-08: Chinman marked a 34-4 overall record in dual meet action. His .895 win percentage last year tied for the team lead with James Moody. 2006-07: Chinman posted a superb 26-7 record in duals, grabbing the starting spot in January and blazing to the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional title. His championship there earned him a spot in the NCAA tournament, where he placed fifth to become an All-American as a freshman. Chinman posted dual match records of 11-3, 11-2 and 5-2.

1985-89 4X All-American 1989 NCAA Champ 1996 Olympian Chiropractor

“Penn State gives you the opportunity to express yourself as an individual, as well as a team member, and, as an outsider looking in, that tends to be impressive.”

JANA ANGELAKIS

1980-85 4X All-American 3X U.S. Champ ‘80&’84 Olympian Fitness Specialist

“Having the opportunity to work with Coach Kaidanov put fencing in a different light for me. The experience of being on a team and to contribute to someone else’s fencing made Penn State a positive experience for me.”

ADAM FELDMAN

1983-87 3X All-American 1986 NCAA Champ Physician

“The challenges and successes I encountered competing at Penn State helped me to grow both mentally and physically”

Coaching History BETH ALPIN 1968-85

In 1926, the Penn State men’s fencing program was launched by Dr. Paul Schweitzer, the school’s first coach.

Replacing Schweitzer after eight years at the helm of the program was Nels Walke. He guided the team for three years (1934-36) and compiled a 6-3 record. Harry Krutter took over in 1937 and coached until 1941, while compiling a 1915 mark.

From 1942-51, H. Arthur Meyer was the head coach. Meyer’s teams won 13 of 38 meets before the program was temporarily discontinued. The men’s program returned in 1962 under the leadership of Dick Klima, who coached the Lions for 12 years. Klima’s teams were 42-34 during his tenure.

DICK KLIMA 1962-73

The men’s program returned to Eastern prominence during the reign of Maxwell “Mac” Garret, who coached from 1973-82. Garret raised the level of fencing at Penn State, leading the Lions to a 113-21 mark. The women’s program was instituted in 1964-65 under co-coaches Barbara Hoepner and Dorothy Moody.

In 1968, coaching great Mary Beth Alphin took over the women’s program. No one could have predicted that 17 years later, her teams would have an overall record of 249-31-1 and capture national championships in 1980, 1981, and 1983. Emmanuil Kaidanov assumed responsibility for the men’s team in 1982 and the women’s squad in the fall of 1985, following Alphin’s retirement. Kaidanov has continued the tradition established by previous Lion mentors such as Klima, Garret, and Alphin.

MAXWELL GARRET 1973-82

It is hard to discount the success Kaidanov has enjoyed. In his 26 years at Penn State, the men have a 356-24 dual meet record. The women have improved to 343-32 in Kaidanov’s 23 years as head coach. After a 15th-place finish at the 1983 NCAA Championships, Kaidanov’s men’s teams evolved into an annual contender for the national title with one fifth-place showing,, one fourth-place finish, three third places, two seconds, and the combined men’s and women’s NCAA crown in 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2007. After a 10th-place showing in 1986, the Lady Lions demonstrated steady improvement, culminated by finishing first three times, second once, and third once in the 90s before the combined competition began.

The State College Area

L

ocated among mountains and valleys in the exact geographic center of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Centre County thrives on its ability to blend education with industry, technology, historic shopping districts and farming communities.

The heart of the Centre Region is State College, a community featuring the best that life has to offer, in education, commerce, culture and recreation.

This mixture of the cosmopolitan and pastoral works so well that to many the Centre Region is known as “Happy Valley." The region is frequently ranked near the top of the charts by Money magazine’s “Best Places To Live" and Rand McNally’s “Retirement Places Rated Guide." In the late 1980’s, Psychology Today called State College the least stressful place in the United States.

Centre County is home to The Pennsylvania State University, one of the finest teaching and research institutions in the land. Penn State’s impact is great, from the touring Broadway shows that visit campus to two recent additions: the Penn State Research Park and the 15,261-seat Bryce Jordan Center. The ebb-and-flow of students and activity in State College creates a vital downtown that always is bustling, but this is especially so during home football weekends in the fall and the nationally-acclaimed Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts every July. Escape isn’t far away. Less than 20 minutes from campus are quiet towns and villages with charms of their very own, as well as mountains, lakes and roaring streams and brooks.
