PEGULA ICE ARENA HOME OF PENN STATE HOCKEY

Pegula Ice Arena, which opened on September 9, 2013, features two ice surfaces: a main rink, home to Penn State’s varsity hockey programs, and a community rink. The main arena seats 5,704 fans, including a 1,000-seat student section. The two-sheet facility is home to the Nittany Lions. The building hosts a 5,000-square foot weight room, hydrotherapy training room, steam room, team lounge and locker room area. It has the best of amenities for student-athletes and coaches alike. When visitors come to Hockey Valley, they will experience some of the best amenities college hockey has to offer. Pegula Ice Arena has an interactive history of Penn State Hockey, as well as concession stands, suites, loge boxes and club seats. Additionally, the arena’s ability to house stateof-the-art media and broadcasting facilities allows it to host National Hockey League and American Hockey League games, bringing hockey’s best to Hockey Valley. September 26, 2016, served as the first NHL event inside the Pegula Ice Arena as the Buffalo Sabres hosted the Minnesota Wild in an exhibition game. The Centre County community is also able to take advantage of the community rink, which will be open nearly 360 days per year for public use. The rink seats 300 fans and features eight locker rooms in order to host local youth hockey, university recreation and skating programs

INTERVIEW POLICIES Head coach Josh Brandwene is accessible for media interviews, which must be made by contacting the Strategic Communications office. Practices are open to the public, but members of the media must inform the Strategic Communications staff at least 24 hours in advance of attendance.

Final results and any post-game notes will be distributed approximately 15 minutes after the conclusion of the game.

The first varsity head coach of Penn State women’s ice hockey, Josh Brandwene enters his fifth year at the helm of the program in 2016-17. After tallying their highest College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament seed in program history (third), the 2015-16 season came to a close for the Nittany Lions in a 3-2 triple overtime loss in the CHA Semifinal round to No. 2 seed Syracuse – the eighth-longest game in NCAA women’s hockey history. During the 2015-16 season, the Nittany Lions captured their third win in program history over a ranked opponent (5-3 No. 7/8 Boston University Oct. 9), received votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll (Oct. 20) for the first time in program history and recorded a five-game unbeaten streak – the longest in team history. In the Penn State record books, the 2015-16 Nittany Lions eclipsed 900 shots on goal for the first time as a program (924) and set program-bests in save percentage (.931), goals against average (1.81) and shutouts (six). In the classroom, the Nittany Lions maintained their program’s perfect 1.000 APR, improved the team GPA to 3.40, and had a record 17 student-athletes make dean’s list in the spring of 2016. Individually, Laura Bowman became the first women’s hockey student-athlete to receive Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District At-Large First Team honors. The 2014-15 season featured the Nittany Lions' best season in program history, posting the finest record in school history at 17-16-4 and earning its highest CHA Tournament seed at No. 4. Penn State earned its first wins over a ranked opponent (No. 6 Mercyhurst) and its first conference series sweep against the Lakers. The most improved team in the NCAA from the 2013-14 campaign, the Blue and White set program marks for wins (17), power play goals (23) and shorthanded goals (3) during the year. After setting the program’s single-season record for goals (16) and shorthanded goals (2), Laura Bowman, December’s CHA Player of the Month, picked up Penn State’s first All-CHA Second Team selection, alongside All-CHA Rookie Team honors for goalie Hannah Ehresmann and defenseman Bella Sutton. In 2013-14, a freshman recruited by Brandwene, Bowman, earned All-CHA Rookie Team by leading the Nittany Lions in scoring with 10 goals. Penn State’s second season featured a more challenging schedule that featured seven opponents who finished with winning records. During Penn State’s historic first season, Brandwene orchestrated a season-opening win at Vermont and guided the team through a tough College Hockey America conference season. Under his tutelage, Penn State freshman Shannon Yoxheimer earned a spot on the All-CHA Rookie Team. Brandwene was named the first head coach of the Penn State women’s ice hockey team on May 31, 2011. Brandwene, a Penn State alumnus, brings more than 20 years of coaching and administrative experience at the international, collegiate, and prep school levels to Happy Valley. Brandwene’s previous coaching experience included a stint as the Team USA’s men’s ice hockey assistant coach at the 2003 World University Games. He also served as head boys’ coach at top New England prep program Northfield Mount Hermon School (Mass.) in 2004-07, and head girls’ coach at the Kingsford Oxford School (Conn.) in 2007-10. During his two-year tenure with the Kingsford Oxford girls’ team, Brandwene successfully rebuilt the program and led the New England Division II prep school team to a runner-up finish at the Canterbury Invitational Tournament and four victories over Division I prep programs. He was then asked to take over the boys’ program in the 2010-11 season prior to arriving at Penn State. Brandwene’s prep school coaching was preceded by a 10-year stint leading three different American College Hockey Association (ACHA) men’s programs, beginning with a two-year stint as head coach at West Virginia (1994-96). He led the program to its first bid to the national tournament and the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season championship in its first season in the league. Brandwene then left the Mountaineers to become the head coach and director of youth hockey programs at Delaware. During his seven-year stay (1996-2003), he led the team to three straight ECHA titles and seven consecutive national tournament appearances. In 2001, Delaware advanced to the national championship game and appeared in the semifinals two years later. After serving as an assistant coach for Team USA at the World University Games, Brandwene spent the 2003-04 season at the University of Michigan Dearborn. He led the program to a 20-win season and collected the 200th win of his ACHA coaching career. Brandwene began his coaching career immediately after graduating from Penn State in 1991 when he became the head coach at Farmington High School (Conn.). In three seasons (1991-94), Brandwene led the program to its first state tournament berth in five years and a trip to the semifinals in his second season. In addition to coaching, Brandwene served as ACHA president from 1997-2004. Under his watch, the organization’s membership more than tripled to 278 teams. A women’s division was also formed in 2000 and a third men’s division was added in 1999. Brandwene was elected to the ACHA Hall of Fame in 2009, the Penn State Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996 and the University of Delaware Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005. A standout defenseman for Penn State’s club hockey team, Brandwene was a member of the 1990 ACHA National Championship team. He earned both team and league MVP honors and garnered first-team All-Tournament recognition as a senior. Brandwene graduated as the program’s all-time leader in points among defensemen. Brandwene and his wife, Leona, also a Penn State graduate, have a daughter, Sophie.

Dean Jackson enters his first year as an assistant coach with the Penn State women's hockey program in 2016-17. Jackson joined the Nittany Lions after serving as the head coach of the Elmira College womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hockey program for the past four seasons.

Lisa Marshall enters her first year as an assistant coach with the Penn State women's hockey program in 2016-17. Prior to Penn State, Marshall was an assistant coach for two seasons with the RIT Tigers.

Jackson took over the women's hockey program at Elmira College in 2012-13 and led the Soaring Eagles to their third NCAA title in program history with a record of 24-5-1. His team ranked first in the nation in scoring defense, second in penalty kill, and fourth in scoring offense. Jackson became the first NCAA women's ice hockey coach, in any division, to lead a team to a national championship without a single All-American selection.

At RIT, Marshall assisted in all aspects of the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hockey program, including recruiting, on-ice preparation and goalie coach. During her first season on staff (2014-15), the Tigers captured their second-straight College Hockey America (CHA) title and advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in program history.

For his efforts in 2012-13, Jackson was named the D3HOCKEY.COM National Coach of the Year, CaptainU National Coach of the Year, and was a finalist for the American Hockey Coaches Association (ACHA) Division III Coach of the Year award. The Soaring Eagles then advanced to their second-straight NCAA Tournament in 2013-14 and finished the season with an overall record of 21-6-1. That season he coached the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Defensive Player of the Year as well as three American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) All-Americans. During the 2014-15 season, Coach Jackson led the Soaring Eagles to a program-best 26 wins (26-3-1). Elmira also posted a perfect 18-0-0 mark in ECAC West Conference games, the first flawless conference record by an ECAC West team since 2005-06. It also marked the first time in ECAC West history that a conference team had won 18 league games since the conference expanded to 10 teams. The 2015-16 season was yet another successful year for Jackson and his program returned to the NCAA Final Four for the second consecutive season. However, the Soaring Eagles fell 4-3 in overtime in the semifinals against No. 3 UW-River Falls. Elmira ended the season on a high note with a 4-1 win over Middlebury in the NCAA Third-Place Game. At the conclusion of the season Jackson was a STX/AHCA Division III National Coach of the Year Finalist. As the head coach at Elmira, Coach Jackson posted a record of 9419-4 and made four straight NCAA appearances. The Soaring Eagles made the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four seasons, including a third-place finish (2015-16), a second-place finish (2014-15) and a NCAA title (2012-13).

During the Tigers run to the NCAA Division I Tournament in the 2014-15 season, senior goaltender Ali Binnington went 5-0-0 over a five-game stretch en route to the CHA Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. Including the 2014-15 regular season finale and the CHA Tournament, Binnington started all five contests, made 157 saves, tallied a save percentage of .981, recorded a goals against average of 0.56, allowed only three goals and posted two shutouts. A native of Powhatan, Virginia, Marshall started her collegiate career at Wayne State University before transferring to Elmira College for her sophomore season, when Wayne State discontinued its program. At Elmira, Marshall excelled between the pipes, recording a 32-8-1 record with a 1.22 goals against average and .947 save percentage and 23 shutouts in three seasons, helping lead the Soaring Eagles to the 2013 Division III Championship. Marshall garnered All-USCHO.com third team national honors and was an All-ECAC West second team selection during her senior season. She finished her senior year with a record of 16-5-1, posted a 1.26 goals against average and a .951 save percentage in 22 games to go along with six shutouts. For three seasons, Marshall played at the United States Under-18 Developmental camps (2007, 2008, and 2010), in Lake Placid and Rochester. Marshall received a bachelor's degree in English literature with an associate's degree in business administration from Elmira in 2014. She was a two-year member of Elmira's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and also served as a student worker in the athletics and sports medicine offices.

Jackson graduated from Elmira College in 2003 with a B.S. in business administration with a specialization in marketing.

COLLEGE HOCKEY AMERICA HISTORY

Penn State—along with Lindenwood and RIT— ushered in a new era of collegiate women’s hockey when the three new teams competed in College Hockey America (CHA) during the 2012-13 season. Now the league boasts six schools: charter member Mercyhurst College, Robert Morris University (joined 2005), Syracuse University (joined 2008), Lindenwood University, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Penn State University. The 2016-17 season is the third year in which the CHA Tournament winner will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. For the fifth-straight season, each school will play the other five schools four times (two home, two away) for a total of 20 CHA match-ups. The 2017 CHA Tournament will run from March 2-4. The six-team tournament format takes place at the HARBORCENTER in Buffalo, N.Y. The CHA First Round is March 2 with the 3-6 and 4-5 matchups. The No. 1 seed will play the lowest-seed remaining in the tournament during the CHA semifinal round. The CHA represents all three of Pennsylvania’s Division I teams (Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, Penn State), while stretching north to New York (RIT, Syracuse) and west to Missouri (Lindenwood). Mercyhurst has ruled the roost winning the regular-season CHA title in every campaign for 14 straight years. The only blips in its dominance have come in the past five seasons as Robert Morris (2012) and RIT (2014 & ’15) captured tournament titles.

PENN STATE UNIVERSITY A LAND GRANT INSTITUTION Penn State’s historic mission of teaching, research, and public service — launched under the most modest of circumstances more than 150 years ago — now reaches into virtually all parts of Pennsylvania. Consider, for example, that the University now has 24 campuses across the Commonwealth, putting a Penn State education within practical reach of nearly every Pennsylvanian. In fact, nearly 75 percent of Penn State’s undergraduates are Pennsylvania residents. Penn State is Pennsylvania’s largest nongovernmental employer and has employees and expenditures in every one of its 67 counties. The University generates a total economic impact across the Commonwealth that surpasses $8.5 billion annually. Part of that impact is derived from Penn State’s research program, which brings more than $500 million in federal funds to Pennsylvania each year, and an additional $100 million from private industry. Penn State’s outreach and online programs — ranging from 4H to Cooperative Extension, from summer camps to public broadcasting — provide educational and service programs to more than a million Pennsylvania households annually. The University’s presence throughout Pennsylvania today contrasts sharply with its humble beginnings. Chartered as a college of scientific agriculture, the institution was located in rural Centre County after James Irvin, a partner in the Centre Furnace iron works (remains of which can be seen today along East College Avenue), offered to donate 200 acres of farmland for a campus. Founding President Evan Pugh wanted the fledging institution to embody a new approach to higher education that blended classical studies with subjects that had practical value. He joined similar visionaries in other states in convincing Congress to pass the Morrill Land-Grant Act in 1862. The act gave individual states tracts of federal land to sell; the proceeds supported colleges

that agreed to include engineering, science and the liberal arts as well as agriculture in their course of studies. In 1863, the Pennsylvania legislature designated Penn State the Commonwealth’s sole land-grant institution. The lawmakers in effect bestowed on the privately incorporated college a public character. In return for state support, the institution assumed obligations of teaching, research and service that are normally associated with publicly owned land-grant universities in other states. By the 1890s Penn State was making its mark. It ranked among the nation’s 10 largest undergraduate engineering schools, a distinction it still holds. It established one of the nation’s first collegiate agricultural experiment stations, and Professor Whitman Jordan’s pioneering research on using fertilizers for soil enrichment had global impact on crop yields. Penn State in 1871 became one of the first land-grant schools in the Northeast to admit women, graduated its first international student in 1890, and its first African-American student in 1905. In the early 1900s, President Edwin E. Sparks supported a number of efforts to “carry the college to the people,” as he liked to say. Technical institutes were established in various locations statewide for engineering education, beginning with an evening school in Allentown in 1910. In 1912, Penn State helped create a system of county agents in agriculture and home economics. Today, the Penn State World Campus, with its “anywhere, anytime” learning through the Internet, builds on that outreach tradition. But undergraduate education remained foremost. Enrollment surpassed 5,000 students by 1936, including those attending several undergraduate centers that were created for students who, in the depths of the Great Depression, could not afford to leave their hometowns to get a college education. The centers offered the first year of baccalaureate studies and were the predecessors of today’s statewide system of campuses. Thanks to

this innovative approach to higher education, Penn State in the 1930s became Pennsylvania’s largest single source of baccalaureate degrees, a distinction it holds to this day. Following World War II, Penn State underwent unprecedented expansion, first to meet the needs of returning military veterans and later to accommodate the Baby Boom generation. Total enrollment at all Penn State campuses climbed to 40,000 by 1970. The University also emerged on the national scene as a research powerhouse in fields as diverse as dairy science, acoustics, psychology, and diesel engineering. The expansion of research went hand in hand with a steady increase in the number of graduate students. The University awarded its first graduate degree — a master’s degree in scientific agriculture — in 1862, and the Graduate School was established in 1922. But overall graduate enrollment remained modest until the 1950s, then swelled steadily. In the past ten years alone, Penn State had awarded more than 30,000 master’s, doctoral, and other advanced degrees. The University Park campus is Penn State’s administrative and research hub. In addition, there are 19 primarily undergraduate campuses; Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, including the College of Medicine; the Pennsylvania College of Technology; the Penn State Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle campus; the Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies; and the Penn State World Campus. To date, Penn State has awarded nearly 750,000 degrees, hallmarks of an educational experience second to none in quality. In addition, Penn State alumni — including 327,000 in Pennsylvania alone — have job- and social-networking opportunities that no other college or university in the Commonwealth can surpass.

Penn State’s athletic symbol, chosen by the student body in 1906, is the mountain lion which once roamed central Pennsylvania. H.D. “Joe” Mason, a member of the Class of 1907, conducted a one-man campaign to choose a school mascot after seeing the Princeton tiger on a trip with the Penn State baseball team to that New Jersey campus. A student publication sponsored the campaign to select a mascot and Penn State is believed to be the first college to adopt the lion as a mascot. Since Penn State is located in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nittany, the lion was designated as a Nittany Lion. In regional folklore, Nittany (or Nita-Nee) was a valorous Indian princess in whose honor the Great Spirit caused Mount Nittany to be formed. A later namesake, daughter of chief O-Ko-Cho, who lived near the mouth of Penn’s Creek, fell in love with Malachi Boyer, a trader. The tearful maiden and her lost lover became legend and her name was given to the stately mountain.

LION SHRINE

Penn State’s Nittany Lion shrine was dedicated on Oct. 24, 1942, during Homecoming Weekend. Animal sculptor Heinz Warneke and stonecutter Joseph Garatti molded a 13-ton block of Indiana limestone into the most recognizable symbol of Penn State. The shrine was chosen from six models submitted by Warneke. The shrine is a gift of the Class of 1940 and rests in a natural setting of trees near Recreation Building. The site was chosen because of its accessibility, the surrounding trees and the fact that the sculpture would not be dwarfed by nearby buildings.

BLUE & WHITE

Penn State’s student-athletes are instantly identified by their blue and white uniforms — but those weren’t the original school colors. A three-member committee representing the sophomore, junior and senior classes was appointed in October of 1887 to develop color options from which the student body would select the school’s official colors. Dark pink and black was the unanimous choice of the student body after considering the color combinations presented by the committee. Soon many students and the baseball team were sporting pink and black striped blazers and caps. However, problems arose when the pink faded to white after several weeks of exposure to the sun. The students then opted for blue, rather than black, and white. The official announcement of the new choice was made on March 18, 1890.

ERIC J. BARRON PENN STATE PRESIDENT FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY ‘72 (B.S.) UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI ‘76 (M.S.), ‘80 (Ph.D.)

Eric J. Barron, former dean at Penn State and former president of Florida State University, began his presidency at Penn State on May 12, 2014. Succeeding former President Rodney Erickson, who had served since 2011, Dr. Barron was named the 18th President of Penn State by the University’s Board of Trustees February 17, 2014. Dr. Barron returned to Penn State from the helm at Florida State, bringing with him nearly 35 years of leadership experience in academic administration, education, research, and public service, and a track record as a talented manager of fiscal policy within large and complex institutions. Dr. Barron led Florida State to two consecutive U.S. News and World Report rankings as the nation’s “most efficiently operated” institution of higher education. Dr. Barron served as dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and founding director of the Earth System Science Center during his previous years at Penn State. Dr. Barron earned a bachelor of science degree in geology at Florida State in 1973 before moving on to the University of Miami, where he earned master’s and doctoral degrees in oceanography, in 1976 and 1980, respectively. Dr. Barron spent 20 years of his career at Penn State, serving as dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences from 2002 to 2006, and as founding director of the Earth System Science Center, one of the first major initiatives focused on the total study of Earth as a system, from 1986 to 2002. He also had a simultaneous appointment as director of the Earth and Mineral Sciences Environment Institute from 1998 to 2002. In 1999, he was named Distinguished Professor of Geosciences at Penn State, and during his tenure as director, Industry Week magazine ranked him among “50 R&D Stars to Watch.” An accomplished scientist with a long background in atmospheric research, Dr. Barron served as director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) from 2008 to 2010 and as dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin from 2006 to 2008. Early in his career he was a postdoctoral research fellow and scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, a federal research center focusing on atmospheric and related science issues. Dr. Barron originally worked at NCAR as a postdoctoral fellow (1981–85), and served for one year on the faculty at the University of Miami before joining Penn State. Dr. Barron has lent his scientific expertise to many national committees and federal organizations. Over the decades, Dr. Barron has lent his significant expertise in the areas of atmospheric science and the 62 62

geosciences to many national committees and federal organizations, including contributions as chair of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) science advisory board and nearly 20 years of service as the chair of multiple National Research Council committees and boards. Throughout his career he has earned numerous accolades and awards, including Penn State’s Wilson Award for Excellence in Teaching (1999); the National Aeronautic and Space Administration’s (NASA) Distinguished Public Service Medal (2003); and the Bridge Builders Leadership Award from the Martin Luther King Foundation of Florida (2012). Dr. Barron is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society, the Geological Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has authored more than 125 peer-reviewed papers in geology, oceanography, and climate issues.

SANDY BARBOUR DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY ‘81 (B.A.) MASSACHUSETTS ‘83 (M.S.); NORTHWESTERN ‘91 (M.B.A.)

Sandy Barbour began her leadership of the Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics program on August 18, 2014. President Eric J. Barron named Barbour the Nittany Lions’ ninth Director of Athletics on July 26, 2014 after serving 10 years as Director of Athletics at the University of California. Barbour brings to Penn State more than 30 years of varied experiences as a collegiate administrator and coach, with a demonstrated record of championships, academic success, innovation, facility modernization and revenue growth. Barbour directs Penn State’s 31-sport, broad-based program that supports approximately 850 student-athletes and an Intercollegiate Athletics staff of more than 300.

Serving as the Director of Athletics at Cal since 2004, Barbour guided the Golden Bears through one of the most successful periods in school history. Under her direction, the athletic department became one of the consistently elite programs in the country. Barbour’s 10-year term as AD was the longest tenure for the department since men’s and women’s athletics merged into a single entity in 1992. During her tenure overseeing Cal’s 30-sport program, the Golden Bears won 20 team national championships, 97 individual national titles, finished in the top 10 in the annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings six times, including a program-best third in 2011, and reached record levels in ticket sales, sponsorships and fundraising. Cal student-athletes continued their high academic achievement in 2013-14, with numerous programs earning public recognition from the NCAA on the Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate metrics with 100 percent scores. New coach Sonny Dykes led a resurgence in the football program’s academic achievement with a 969 APR score, 18 points higher than the Division I football average, and a record-setting program GPA. Under Barbour’s leadership, the average grade-point average for Cal’s 30 teams was nearly 3.0 and the women’s golf team achieved the highest team GPA in Cal’s recorded history when it posted a 3.54 GPA during the fall 2013 semester. More than 175 student-athletes annually earned academic all-conference notice, and 17 teams received national recognition for their NCAA Academic Progress Rates over the last five years. Prior to moving to Berkeley, Barbour was the deputy director of athletics at Notre Dame, serving as the university’s senior athletic administrator from July 2002 to September 2004. She previously held an associate athletic director position there starting in 2000. Barbour’s career in intercollegiate athletic administration spans more than 30

years, beginning as a field hockey assistant coach and lacrosse administrative assistant at the University of Massachusetts in 1981. She has since served as assistant athletic director at Northwestern and in 1991 was recruited to Tulane as an associate athletic director. In 1996, Barbour was appointed Tulane’s director of athletics at age 36, and during her three years overseeing the program, Green Wave teams won 12 conference championships. In her first year in the position, the school captured four conference titles, a feat never before accomplished in Tulane history. She also hired Tommy Bowden as head football coach during her first year. Bowden proceeded in 1997 to post the Green Wave’s first winning season (7-4) in 16 years, and then directed the school to a 12-0 record, a Conference USA championship and a No. 7 national ranking the following season as the 1998 Liberty Bowl champions. Born Dec. 2, 1959, in Annapolis, Md., Barbour grew up in a military family. Her father was a career aviator in the U.S. Navy, and her family lived in various U.S. locations as well as in Western Europe during her childhood. Barbour graduated cum laude in 1981 with a B.S. degree in physical education from Wake Forest, where she was a fouryear letterwinner and served as captain of the field hockey team. She also played two varsity seasons of women’s basketball. Barbour earned advanced degrees at both Massachusetts (an M.S. in sports management in 1983) and Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management (an M.B.A. in 1991). Between master’s programs, Barbour served as assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Northwestern from 1982-84.
