Penn State Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour selected Alexandra Anghelescu (On-guhl-S-coo) as the 11th head coach of the women’s tennis program, as announced on July 1, 2019. A former professional on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, Anghelescu spent the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach with the Nittany Lions. Anghelescu helped lead the Nittany Lions to 11 wins during the 2019 spring season, the team’s most dual-match victories since 2015. The Nittany Lions reached a team ranking of No. 49 in spring 2019, their first top-50 ranking since the 2016 season. Penn State also knocked off then-No. 48 VCU for its first win over a ranked opponent since 2015. Anghelescu has also helped develop stronger spring and fall schedules during her time in Happy Valley under former coach Chris Cagle, in addition to working with the budget, structuring practice, and as a liaison with the Morgan Academic Center. Prior to matriculating to Penn State, Anghelescu played and coached at two Atlantic Coast Conference institutions. Anghelescu served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina during the 2017-18 season. She helped the Tar Heels win the ITA National Indoor Championship, the 2018 ACC Tournament and earn the nation’s No. 1 ranking for 10 consecutive weeks. North Carolina finished the 2017-18 season with five AllAmericans, had five players take part in the NCAA Individual Championships and had a doubles squad advance to the NCAA semifinals. Prior to joining the Tar Heels’ staff, Anghelescu served as a certified Tennis Professional working with junior players of all levels at Life Time Fitness in Alpharetta, Georgia, in addition to serving as a 2018 USTA National Spring Team Championships Coach. She also worked with the USTA Southern Section High Performance Camp as a Selected Coach.

Anghelescu spent her collegiate playing days at Georgia and Georgia Tech. She achieved an ITA top 10 ranking in doubles at Georgia Tech, helping the Yellow Jackets to a consistent top 15 national ranking and round of 16 appearances at the ITA National Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships. A native of John’s Creek, Georgia, Anghelescu reached a high ranking of No. 935 as a professional on the WTA Tour in singles action and No. 957 in WTA doubles. Her top win in juniors was a victory over 2017 U.S. Open Champion Sloane Stephens. Anghelescu graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgia Tech in 2014.

First Season at Penn State

Ronit Yurovsky joins the Nittany Lions for her first season in 2019-20. A former professional on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, Yurovsky brings experience as both a championship-winning player and coach in the Big Ten. Yurovsky spent the 2018-19 season on staff with the Michigan women’s tennis team. Yurovsky helped guide the Wolverines to a sweep of the Big Ten championship and Big Ten Tournament title, as well as a trip to the NCAA Super Regionals. A former Michigan student-athlete herself, Yurovsky aided the Wolverine coaching staff in conducting team practices, on-court workouts, and individual skill-specific instruction. Yurovsky earned All-America laurels and four All-Big Ten honors as a player at Michigan from 2012-16, leading the Wolverines to three Big Ten championships during her time in the Maize and Blue. She graduated third in singles wins (117) with an all-time winning percentage of .755. She was one of two Wolverines in program history to make four NCAA Singles Championship appearances and ended each of her four seasons ranked in the top 50. Yurovsky earned All-Big Ten honors in all four seasons and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2013. She also picked up ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year honors in 2013 and capped her career being named the 2016 ITA Midwest Region Senior of the Year. Michigan advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in each of her four years and reached the Elite Eight in 2016 during her senior season. Yurovsky was Michigan’s Big Ten Female Sportsmanship honoree in 2016. Prior to returning to her alma mater in a coaching role, Yurovsky spent two years as a professional on the WTA Tour. She holds a career singles ranking of 357 and career doubles ranking of 276. A native of New Kensington, Pa., Yurovsky graduated from Michigan in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management.

SEASON PREVIEW RETURNING PLAYERS The Penn State women’s tennis team returns eight players from its 2018-19 roster and is looking to build upon last year’s four-win improvement. Senior captains Samantha Smith and Shannon Hanley highlight the returning crop and they will be joined by three juniors and three sophomores to round out the roster.
FALL REVIEW Penn State is coming off of a busy fall season. Junior Olivia Rohrbacher led the charge in both singles and doubles with six wins in each. As a pair, the tandem of Samantha Smith and Hanna Wikberg found success in doubles, leading the Nittany Lions with three fall victories. Junior Gabby O’Gorman made a deep run in the ITA Regionals advancing all the way to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Natasha Subhash of Virginia, 6-3, 6-2. The team will look to capitalize on having an experienced roster. Samantha Smith, Olivia Rohrbacher, and Sydney Weinberg all look to carry their momentum from the fall into the spring after finishing tournment play with back to back victories. The team will look to start the spring strong using a six match homestand early in the season to its advantage. COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE Penn State’s spring schedule will feature 11 Big Ten matches and 10 non-conference matchups. The Nittany Lions will open the spring facing six nonconference opponents before gearing up for their first Big Ten opponent, Indiana. After a trip to Indiana, the Penn State will have a fourgame homestand with matches against Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, and Temple. Following the stay at home, the Nittany Lions will face four consecutive Big Ten oponents on the road with visits to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa. Penn State will conclude the regular season with two final Big Ten matches at home against Rutgers and Maryland.

2019 FALL: Played in two tournaments, including five singles and five doubles matches. Accumulated two singles win and one doubles win over Liberty with partner Hanna Wikberg. 2018-19 SPRING SEASON- JUNIOR: Played in 18 singles and 20 doubles matches. Accumulated eight singles wins including a Big 10 victory over Iowa. Hanley and Samantha Smith totaled eight doubles wins with a conference victory over Purdue.
Drexel University and College of William and Mary. Recorded a singles win against No. 8 Montana Moore of No. 1 Tyler JC 6-2, 6-3. Defeated Christina Makarova of No. 10 Duke University 6-3, 0-6, 1-0. JUNIOR CAREER: Ranked No. 56 nationally and holds a No. 3 rank in the state of Maryland. Shannon also holds achievements in the USTA Mid-Atlantic Region with a rank of No. 2 in girls 18 singles, two National Open doubles titles, singles and doubles champion of Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) her freshman, junior, and senior years, and was a team member of Washington Posts First team All-Met Spring, 2015. Hanley was undefeated in all four years of her high school play in singles action. She was a member of the National Honors Society, a Student Ambassador member, and a member of her Student Government at her high school.
2018 FALL: Competed in two tournaments throughout the fall season, including four singles matches and five doubles matches. Made it to the round of 16 in doubles at ITA Regionals with partner Samantha Smith. 2017-18 SPRING SEASON- SOPHOMORE: Played in 21 singles matches in the spring and 16 doubles matches.Singles matches were highlighted by a win over Mary Ann Rompf of Wisconsin, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, to secure a 4-3 victory over the Badgers. Hanley and Samantha Smith capped off spring doubles by securing a win over No. 48 Daniela Novak and Sasha Belaya of Illinois, 7-6 (7-5). 2017 FALL: Saw action in three tournaments. Had eight singles matches, winning four. Singles wins were highlighted at the UNCW Invitational where she picked up three wins. Paired with Bennett Dunn in doubles to post a winning record of 4-3, good for second most doubles wins as a pair on the team. 2016-17 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Hanley recorded 36 singles matches and 26 doubles matches throughout the season. Had four Big Ten singles wins against Wisconsin, Nebraska, Maryland and Purdue. Had three Big Ten doubles wins against Minnesota, Iowa and Purdue. 2016 FALL: Made 15 singles and seven doubles appearances. 2019 FALL: Participated in four tournaments, including ten singles and 12 doubles matches. Finished with four singles and four doubles wins. Moved into Penn State’s top five in all-time singles victories, surpassing Sasha Abraham’s 58. Smith and Hanna Wikberg led the team in doubles wins as a pair with three.
2016 FALL: Made 7 doubles appearances and competed in 14 singles matches. Advanced to the Cissie Leary Invitational and defeated Natalia Perry of College of William and Mary 6-1, 6-2. Defeated Rebecca Smaller of #10 Duke University 6-4, 7-5 at the Kitty Harrison Invitational. Possessed a six singles match winning streak from September 30 till October 15. JUNIOR CAREER: Ranked No. 54 in the nation in the Senior Recruiting Class. Holds multiple tennis achievements including three time High School State Team Championships and four time Individual Doubles State Championships. Smith has been selected to represent North Carolina at the Southern Junior Cup for five years in a row, and holds two southern Winter Closed singles championships. Served as President of DECA and is a member of the National Honors Society.
2018-19 SPRING SEASON- JUNIOR: Appeared in 19 singles and 22 doubles matches. Concluded spring with 12 singles wins. Led team with seven singles wins against conference foes. Smith and Shannon Hanley finished with eight doubles wins including a conference victory over Purdue… Finished season tied for seventh on Penn State’s all-time singles wins list with 55 career victories. 2018 FALL: Competed in team-high 16 singles matches and 11 doubles matches. Smith won 11 singles matches, a team-high. At ITA Regionals Smith knocked off three opponents en route to a quarterfinal finish in singles. In doubles at ITA Regionals, Smith paired up with Shannon Hanley to advance to the round of 16. 2017-18 SPRING SEASON- SOPHOMORE: Competed in 20 singles matches and 16 doubles matches, led the team in singles wins. Posted a 5-6 record in Big Ten singles matches and had a 4-4 mark in doubles matches. Singles wins were highlighted by a victory over No. 110 Asuka Kawai, 6-4, 6-2. Smith and Shannon Hanley posted a 7-6 (7-5) victory over No. 48 Daniela Novak and Sasha Belaya in doubles play. 2017 FALL: Appeared in three tournaments, seeing six singles matches and five doubles matches. JUNIOR CAREER: O’Gorman holds achievements as the winner of the Monte Carlo Junior Open in 2014 and runner up at Australian Grass Court Championships at Mildura. O’Gorman was a three-time New South Wales Pizzey Cup National Champion and was a captain in 2016. Additionally, she was a three-time Australian Merit Team member.

2017 FALL: Did not compete. JUNIOR CAREER: Ranked as high as No. 20 in the US for her recruiting class, Rohrbacher holds a 146-5 record in high school, along with being a three-time captain. She holds multiple achievements including the 2015 New Balance High School National Champion, 2016 North West Ohio Tennis Association player of the year, four-time conference MVP and champion and four-time sectional and district champion. Rohrbacher was also an OHSAA silver and gold Racket Award Winner.

2018-19 SPRING SEASON- SOPHOMORE: Played in 22 singles and 22 doubles matches. Led team with a total of 13 singles wins highlighted by a win over Northwestern. Svarre and Chelsea Sawyer ended the season with 12 doubles victories over six Big Ten rivals.
2018-19 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Competed in two singles matches and one doubles match. Won both singles matches against Towson and Norfolk State. Earned a doubles win over Norfolk State.

Svarre’s doubles play was highlighted at ITA Regionals when she and Olivia Rohrbacher racked up four wins to advance to the quarterfinals. With eight doubles wins Svarre is tied for second most doubles wins on the team.

2017-18 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Competed in 21 singles matches and 14 doubles matches in the spring. Took on four nationally ranked opponents. Recorded a win at No. 1 singles against Indiana, defeating Madison Appel, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 5-3, retired in Big Ten singles action. 2017 FALL: Appeared in 13 singles matches, which was the most on the team. Had 10 doubles appearances over her four tournaments, with the second most doubles wins on the team with five. Picked up the most doubles wins of any pair with partner Hanna Wikberg, with five. Advanced to the round of 16 doubles at ITA Regionals, falling to the tournament’s No. 1 seed, with partner Wikberg.
JUNIOR CAREER: Hirsch was a three-star recruit that ranked as high as No. 203 in her recruiting class. In high school, she attained All-State accolades in 2016 and 2017, placed third in Ohio doubles in 2016 and 2017 and was a team finalist in the state of Ohio in 2015 and 2016. Hirsch was the Cincinnati Enquirer Division II Singles player of the Year in 2016 and 2017. She was also a recipient of the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award and Suzie Vokkell Award. 2019 FALL: Played in four tournaments, including 11 singles and ten doubles matches. Tied for second on the team with five singles victories. Earned two doubles wins over Liberty and Purdue.

2018-19 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Played in five singles and three doubles matches. Finished with singles wins over Towson and Cornell. Ryan won one doubles match against Cornell paired with Frederikke Svarre.
2018-19 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Appeared in three singles and one doubles match. Won all three singles matches against Towson, Marshall, and Norfolk State. Received a doubles win over Norfolk State.
2018 FALL: Appeared in 11 singles and 12 doubles matches. Tied for the second most doubles wins on the team with eight. Made it to the quarterfinals in her flight at the Hokie Fall Invite. Partnering with Olivia Rohrbacher, the duo tied for a team-high five doubles wins. Ryan teamed up with Sydney Weinberg at ITA Regionals where the duo made it to the round of 32.
2018 FALL: Competed in four tournaments, seeing action in 12 singles matches and eight doubles matches. Weinberg made it to the finals at the Cissie Leary Invitational in flight B singles. At the Cissie Leary Invitational, Weinberg had three wins that all went to a third set before falling in the finals to Penn’s Mimi Levine, 6-1, 6-2. When playing in three-set matches, Weinberg was a perfect 5-0. Weinberg teamed up with Olivia Ryan to make it to the round of 32 in doubles, at ITA Regionals.
JUNIOR CAREER: Ryan was ranked No. 8 in Australia for the 18 and under age group, and ranked as high as No. 2 in Victoria for her age group. She was also ranked No. 78 in Australia for Women’s Open age group. Ryan owns two Australian Adult Singles Titles and six Australian Doubles Titles. Additionally, Ryan was the captain of the Victoria state team in 2016. 2019 FALL: Competed in three tournaments, including ten singles and eight doubles matches. JUNIOR CAREER: Weinberg was a four-star recruit and ranked as high as No. 124 in her recruiting class. She trained at the MAC Tennis Academy, a USTA Regional Training Center. In her junior career, Weinberg was consistently ranked in the top five of the New England Section. Weinberg was a member of the 2017 New England National Team and a member of the New England Zone Team from age 11 on. She also received the USTA New England Sportsman of the year award in 2016.
