www.lewishickey.com Title: Mansfield Folkhouse Young People’s Centre £6.5m Redevelopment Location: Mansfield Architect: Lewis and Hickey

£6.5m restoration and extension of the Westfield Folkhouse building in Mansfield which has been used as a youth centre for most of the 20th century. The facility is managed by Nottinghamshire County Council which has contributed £1.5m towards the project with the remaining money coming from the Government’s myplace fund. Westfield Folkhouse is a Grade II listed building, formally a manor house. It was built in 1830 with late 19th century and 20th century additions. The project includes a 1,000m2 extension over two floors which replaced a smaller 1960s addition and houses rooms for multi-media gaming zones, music and dance, DJ booths, activities areas, café zones and offices. The new building has created a worldclass, state-of-the-art facility offering youth clubs and targeted projects for young people seven days a week. Extensive restoration of the main building, which was in a deteriorating state, is used for office space and meetings. The build was project managed by Nottinghamshire County Council, the lead architects were Lewis and Hickey (Nottingham office) and GF Tomlinsons was the lead construction contractor. Design overview The project team worked closely with English Heritage and the local Conservation Officers and with which it was decided that the new extension would not compromise the character and historic elements of the listing building. It was 0

agreed that the design of the building would not be a pastiche of the old building but would complement it’s colour palette whilst having a distinct identity of its own using modern materials such as glass, and aluminium and steelwork. The extension has been designed to be set back from the original building’s frontage, meaning visitors get the full impact of the historic building on the driveway approach to the building. Old building Much of the stonework was degrading due the inappropriate use of cement mortar. The stonework in selected areas was lightly cleaned using the Doff system to remove surface dirt and biological growth. Where old stonework was too damaged, Derbyshire grit stones from nearby Stancliffe Quarry at Matlock were used for replacements. Exterior stonework was repointed using lime mortar, interior walls re-plastered using lime plaster replicating their original finish and breathable Keim Ecosil paint was used on interior walls. Repairs to the Welsh blue slate roof were undertaken and the plus the installation of cast iron gutters. Reed plaster ceilings which were collapsing have been repaired and damaged cornicing was restored in situ using traditional techniques. Repair and, where necessary, replacement of sash windows were carried out using Ventrolla, a company specialising in this work. Cleaning of the internal stone staircase using the Doff system to remove paint. Relaying of entrance hall flagstones which had sunken areas. Minimal fixings were used to tie-in the new extension and the existing opening created for the former 1960s extension was used to minimise the impact to the historic fabric of the listed building. Archeologists from Nottingham Trent University surveyed the building to record any historic elements uncovered during the works for the benefit of future generations.

New building Steel structured with a Kalzip standing seam roof. The frontage used ashlar faced stone which blends with the colour of the stonework in the old building whilst giving the extension a more modern smooth finish.

Sustainable features Insulated adhering to BREEAM principles and using mixed-mode (natural and extract) ventilation designs. BIOMASS fuelled boilers. Rainwater harvesting, LED lighting where appropriate and timed sensors for lighting for energy efficiency.

Split faced stone work was introduced to the South and West elevations. Block walling with Sto render was used on the rest of the building to match the colour of the old stone. Self-cleaning glass was introduced to areas helping reduce maintenance whilst taking advantage of natural light where installed, including roof lights and bespoke glass pods to add design interest. Curved feature acoustic rafts which allow audio to be played throughout the building have been fitted and are colour coded to define spaces and act as a design feature.

Outside areas The land to the rear of the building was divided into two areas. The ‘urban’, more modern area includes graffiti walls, basketball court, ‘petanque’ ball court, an outdoor gym, walls for graffiti art, allotments, and areas for five-a-side football, volley ball, chess and boules. This area is situated behind a newly created wall made of locally sourced grit stone of a similar colour to the old building to preserve the character of the building. A calming, traditional area in the form of a sensory garden and landscaping was located adjacent to the nearby conservation area overlooking the side of the listed building.

Vibrant colours used throughout the building to give it a modern and interesting feel. Features include two DJ booths, a multi-media wall with TV and gaming units and a dance studio with a touch sensitive interactive wall. Toilets were designed to be large and colourful with graffiti panels on the doors in response to young people’s feedback that these areas tend to also serve as meeting areas. Large Makaton signage was used for young people with learning disabilities.

www.cartwrightpickard.com Title: London Metropolitan University Reveals A Spectrum Of Refurbished Facilities Location: London Architect: Cartwright Pickard Architects

Cartwright Pickard Architects (CPA) and Mace have recently overseen the completion of the refurbishment of four London Metropolitan University (LMU) facilities. Mace and CPA were commissioned under a single procurement by the university for their ambitious cross campus refurbishment project. The aim of the project was to update and modernise the Learning Centre, Tower, Central House and Grade II-listed Moorgate buildings. CPA’s design identified ways that areas that could be used more efficiently and introduced more informal learning spaces. Adaptability of the space was key to the designs, ensuring that the workspaces are easily modifiable to future learning needs. Additionally each site is accentuated by a colour scheme as defined by LMU, reiterated by the accompanying soft furnishings, to aid navigation for both students and visitors alike. Paul McAneary Architects Ltd has announced the completion of the project Tex Tonic House 1, a double-height penthouse apartment located in Victoria, London. The clients brief was to design two apartments on the top floor of the existing Central London post office and Phillips de Pury art action house in Victoria, London. The client expressed a wish for large volume ‘loft’ spaces and his desire for a contemporary design and functionality. Paul McAneary Architects’ proposal was for natural tectonics through numerous new details, and even developing a new material type - of cast timber bronze. The overall architectural language is modest and dramatic at the same time: mixed timber tectonics have been applied with an emphasis on their texture and intrinsic beauty. The amount of ‘vertical natural light’ flooding through the large skylights, walk on glass and the horizontal curtain walling maximise the exquisite effect of the natural grain and pattern of the timber ceiling, oak beams and floor as well as the bronze ‘timber texture’.

Derwent London’s Angel Building has been shortlisted for this year’s prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. The RIBA Stirling Prize, now in its 16th year, is awarded to the architects of the best new European building ‘built or designed in Britain’. It recognises the single building that has made the most significant contribution to architecture over the last 12 months and this is the third time Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), the architects of the Angel Building, have been shortlisted for this prestigious award. Buildings need to enter and win a RIBA Award for architectural excellence in order to be judged for the RIBA Stirling Prize. The RIBA Awards are announced in May each year and are judged by a regional Jury. A separate jury is then created to form the RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist. The winner is announced at the RIBA Stirling Prize Dinner, held in early October each year. The Angel Building is one of six shortlisted projects and the winning scheme will be announced on Saturday 1st October at Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham and will be broadcast on a special edition of BBC TWO’s The Culture Show on Sunday 2nd October. Completed in 2010, the Angel Building has been awarded the BCO award for Refurbished and Recycled Workspace, RIBA Award for Architecture, NLA New London Award and was commended at the Civic Trust Awards 2011. The Angel Building is all about improving radically on the thinking of the past, to provide the best possible office environment for today. A restrained piece of enlightened modern architecture by award-winning architects AHMM, it contains over 250,000 sq ft of exceptional office space. With a remarkable atrium, fine café, and exclusively-commissioned works of contemporary art, it also enjoys exceptional views from its enormous rooftop terraces. Above all, this is where the City meets the West End. The Angel Building is a new addition to this important intersection of London. Located in EC1, the building commands the heights midway between the financial hub of the City of London and the international rail interchange and development area of King’s Cross St. Pancras. With easy access to the West End, it’s at the heart of one of London’s liveliest historic urban villages, with a complete range of shops, restaurants, markets and excellent transport links right outside. The Angel Building brings a distinguished new dimension to the area. This is a building carefully made to greatly reduce its carbon footprint – in construction and in operation. It is highly efficient to run, as befits a Grade A office and retail building built for the second decade of the 21st century. The tangible and outstanding merits of this building were clear even at design and construction stage; in a period of economic downturn a key pre-let was achieved to Cancer Research UK, one of the UK’s leading and most active charities. And on the urban scale, it restores and enlivens the top end of Islington’s historic St John Street, leading down to Farringdon and Smithfield. It’s a good place to be.

Youngsters Bring Home The Cup For Dow! A young football team sponsored by STYROFOAM-A manufacturer Dow Building Solutions has brought back the winning trophy from this year’s Alandia International Cup tournament. The Alandia Cup is a junior football tournament held every year on the Finnish island of Aland. The Steve Beeks’ Soccer School - which trains on fields close to Dow Building Solutions’ UK headquarters in Staines - was the only side from the British Isles to be invited. The team won 4-0 in the final in front of 1,250 spectators at Finnish Premier League team IFK Mariehman’s Wiklöf Holding Arena, whilst Caden Genovesi, the team’s centre midfielder, won player of the tournament. They also broke a competition record by winning every single game and not dropping any points, a feat which has never been achieved before. To provide a practical insight into what sustainability means, the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) recently held its 6th Annual Technical Conference in Stratford, entitled “Achieving a Sustainable Business Future”. The conference focused on the responsible sourcing of aluminium products, the need to design products to last as long as possible, refurbishment where possible for extended life and finally the need to recycle at the highest recovery rates. An incentive scheme introduced to delegates was one currently being developed by the Government in co-operation with businesses, the ‘Green Deal’. Steadmans Meta-Slate® Approved On Historic Mill An historic flour mill in Fife has undergone major refurbishment incorporating the installation of an innovative slate-effect metal roofing system from Carlisle-based manufacturer Steadmans. Builders Face High Risk From Recommended SPF Factor Following a recent report from the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin (DTB), which challenges official guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) on sunscreen usage, Marley Eternit reveals that almost 90 percent of UK construction workers could be putting themselves at serious risk by using the wrong factor protection. Cassius Clay Tile Chosen For The UK’s Largest ‘Eco’ Housing Estate Sandtoft’s large-format Cassius clay roof tile has been chosen for a visionary, zero- carbon social housing development in West Yorkshire. The Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) development in Airedale, West Yorkshire, “Park Dale”, is the largest of its kind in the UK and being built by community regeneration specialist Keepmoat. Traditional construction methods and renewable energy sources are being used to achieve Level Six of the Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes. Manufactured using 100 per cent renewable electricity, Sandtoft’s Cassius clay tile in Antique Slate will appear on the roofs of all 91 homes on WDH’s £12 million estate, which is due to be completed in October 2011. “The Cassius will be used with photovoltaic panels, ensuring the roofs are as environmentally friendly as possible,” said Bret Gibbons, Contracts Manager for Keepmoat. “The fact the tile is manufactured locally and using green electricity is a real bonus for us as this helps to further reduce carbon emissions. In addition, using a clay tile will ensure that the roofs don’t fade, adding to the excellent quality of these unique homes.” Part-funded by the Homes and Community Agency (HCA), the WDH two, three and fourbedroom homes will use a combination of energy saving and carbon-reducing features, such as mechanical ventilation, heat recovery systems, and photovoltaic panels that enable the landlord to sell power back to the national grid. In addition, homes in the new neighbourhood will draw heat from its own “Eco Centre” - a district biomass heating system that will be powered by renewable wood pellets produced in Yorkshire. As the Cassius is made from clay, the tile offers similar aesthetic properties to natural slate. Look Again... This Is Single Ply Membrane At Its Innovative Best Brighton’s Metropole Hotel was the venue for the NFRC’s prestigious annual awards event. Single ply membrane manufacturer Renolit alongside Ilkeston based contractor, Advanced Roof & Wall, were voted outright winners in the Flat Roofing / Single Ply category for the technical competence jointly contributed to the the £21m Pods and Central Park funded by North Lincolnshire Council, Yorkshire Forward and Sport England.

The individual pod diameters extend from 20 up to 50 metres, with the largest covering an area close to 2000 square metres. The Renolit ALKORPLAN system has been deployed as a waterproof foundation beneath two cedar shingle covered domes, one sedum green roofed dome and an aluminium cladded dome. On the final dome, it has also been utilised in its own right combining with Renolit’s ALKORDESIGN profile to create an attractive geometric pattern.

The irony of the category was not lost on TV personality Penny Smith who presented the Renolit and Advanced team with their award, noting that this unique five domed design is anything but flat; comprising of five pods finished in a range of materials, collectively contributing to the development’s remit to blend into the park landscape.

Bilco Makes Its Mark On New Iconic London Landmark Health, safety and access issues have been important considerations during the design and construction of one of Europe’s tallest buildings – Heron Tower at 110 Bishopsgate in the heart of London. Roof hatch, smoke vent and access equipment supplier Bilco UK has played its part in providing essential materials and ensuring the construction work remained on course for completion. Bilco supplied four roof access hatches and two smoke vents. The D-50T hatches will provide access to the roof areas for cleaning and maintenance activities. The hatches have overlapping covers and a spring operated system which provides easy-to-operate access at all times. Two single leaf natural smoke vents were also supplied with associated equipment including control panels and smoke detectors. A Model Roof From Unilin Systems For The Model Home 2020 Project Structural insulated roof panels from Unilin Systems are playing a part in the future of zero carbon home design, having been chosen by VELUX for their CarbonLight Homes, part of the Model Home 2020 project. Overall 235mm thick, the sandwich panels featured 205mm of PIR foam between a 12mm top panel and 18mm bottom panel to meet the high standards requested by VELUX for the CarbonLight Homes. Such is the performance of the panels that Unilin Systems were one of the few panel manufacturers that could achieve the required U value of 0.11W/m2K.

The Bricklayers Arms in quaintly named Hogpits Bottom, in Flaunden, Hertfordshire, is certainly no ordinary country pub. Offering a stunning Anglo-French fusion menu in a delightful 18th century setting, it is listed in the Michelin and Good Pub guides, is Restaurant of the Year in the acclaimed Foodie Magazine, and was shortlisted for The Publican’s Freehouse of the Year 2011 award. Twice named Chef of the Year, its executive chef Claude Paillet himself trained with renowned Michelin 3-star restaurateur Pierre Gagnaire. So when owners Alvin and Sally Michaels were looking to upgrade the bar counters and back bar area at the Bricklayers, they didn’t want to settle for anything ordinary. They wanted a high class finish that was easy to maintain, which would blend into the cosy surroundings of a Grade II listed country pub and, most important of all, which could be installed in a single day, so as not to disrupt their busy lunchtime and evening trade more than absolutely necessary. The material they chose is a diamond-polished recycled glass Vetro Moretti agglomerate finish, by Granite Transformations, which fittingly for these licensed premises is actually made from used wine and beer bottles. The work was carried out by the Granite Transformations showroom in St Albans Road, Watford and franchise owner Frank Dalton explains that it was the material’s unique properties that made it possible to conform with the Michaels’ timescale: “Because it’s tough, yet lightweight enough to fit over the existing bar counters, we were able to complete the whole installation in under a day, complete with free-standing shelf units that were built off-site. With any heavier material, we’d have had to rip out the original woodwork, with lots of debris and demolition, meaning they would’ve lost valuable trading time.” Alvin Michaels is delighted with the refurbishment work and luxurious finish: “If we had put wood down, it would have needed days to settle, then treat and harden, as well as requiring regular varnishing and maintenance. With the Granite Transformations product, they measured up and templated the fittings one morning, then we closed the bar for a day and they installed the new counter tops and back bar fittings by the end of the afternoon. We were also carrying out refurbishment of the restaurant kitchen, so Frank and his team had to comply with our timescale, because we can have as many as 400 or 500 covers over a weekend.”

“It’s a very resilient product and we don’t have to maintain it at all,” says Alvin. “It looks good, the colour we chose blends in beautifully with the existing wood, and the finish introduces a modern, fashionable touch. The ‘green’ angle is appealing and it’s fitting that the material is made from recycled beer and wine bottles. Howe Green At The Centre Of Research Excellence The new building for the internationally renowned Business School and Centre of Research Excellence at the University of Exeter has been completed following an £18m investment. Howe Green’s 2500 and 5000 Series floor access covers and Tile-a-Door+ wall access panels were selected to provide the best possible solution for easy and reliable access to essential building services. The tiling contract was awarded to Arena Tiling Limited and took three months to complete. Timoleon Tailors Underfloor Heating Solution For Pollsters New Grade 2 Listed Timoleon has tailored an under-floor heating solution powered by renewable energy sources for a leading market research company’s new headquarters building. The project will feature one of the first installations of Timoleon’s Aether Dry “screed-less” system which provides an instant, fast track alternative to wet screeds and performs efficiently at flow temperatures as much as 10o C lower – making it a perfect partner for heat pumps. An air to water heat pump was used as the prime energy source for the new premises of Marketing Means at Ashburton in Devon. The windows, floors and ceiling are being insulated to current building regulations. Two of the external walls are also being insulated to the same high standard. Elsewhere, however, the original un-insulated stone has had to be retained giving rise to high heat losses in certain areas. To overcome this problem, while retaining a high COP for the heat pump, Timoleon devised an underfloor heating solution using a number of the company’s specially developed products. On the ground floor an Aether Dry system has been employed, with 100mm Timoleon FoilBoard topped by a floating floor of Screedboard 20. On the upper storey a Timoleon Toron system has been used to achieve maximum output in order to overcome the losses through the old stone walls. The Toron flooring system combines a floor deck with an under-floor heating system in a single, structurally loaded entity. Showroom Floor Transformed Using Ultra Tile And Ultra Floor Car dealers, the Chambers Group in Tamworth, is now open sporting a brand new showroom tiled floor; fitted by J B S (Tiling Contractors) Ltd., using Ultra Floor subfloor preparation products and Ultra Tile adhesive. Subfloor preparation was required to ensure adequate and protected installation of the tiles. Ultra Floor Prime IT AR, an acrylic polymer emulsion primer suited for use over porous substrates was applied first followed by Ultra Floor Level IT one HDB a single part concrete levelling compound. Ultra Floor Prime IT AR is easy to use and safe to apply, and boasts excellent surface penetration and a fast drying time. Ultra Floor Level IT one HDB has a working time of 20-30 minutes and will set within 2-3 hours. The product is protein and ammonia free, shrinkage compensated and polymer modified. Ultra Tile ProRapid RS was an ideal choice of adhesive for this project. The adhesive can be applied at a bed thickness of between 3-12mm on walls or floors. Sureclad Provides Retail Therapy At Trinity Walk Sureclad ceramic granite ventilated cladding supplied by Shackerley is one of the most prominent external wall finishes installed throughout Trinity Walk, a new and vibrant 46,450m2 shopping centre in the City of Wakefield. DLA, the masterplanners behind this major regeneration project development, specified Shackerley’s ceramic granite facade cladding for exterior elevations at the perimeter of the centre and for many of the store and cafe frontages within the mall. When the development was later acquired by a consortium comprising Sovereign Land, Shepherd Construction and AREA Property Partners, Leslie Jones Architecture was brought on board to enhance the scheme for the new owners. Looking afresh at the plans, the new architects decided that the overall design scheme needed to be ‘warmed up’. Lee Pope, project architect said, “The original scheme specified ceramic granite panels in Arctic White and whilst we were very happy with DLA’s choice of material, we thought that we could create a more welcoming atmosphere by bringing in warmer neutral colours to better reflect Wakefield’s urban landscape. “We found the colours we were looking for–

creamy beige, light grey, copper brown and charcoal – in the Sureclad ceramic granite collection and have used contrasting panels to create ‘picture frame’ effects around store frontages and signage zones and to add visual interest to plain elevations. As envisaged, the new colour palette has helped Trinity Walk to blend seamlessly into its city centre location.” All Shackerley’s facades were installed by national roofing and cladding specialist contractor, Roofdec, based in Rotherham. Director Norman Clarry said: “We’ve installed Sureclad facades before and know the system to be straightforward to install and very versatile. This was critical at Trinity Walk where we had a very tight schedule to adhere to, and a lot of interfaces between the ceramic granite facades and other cladding systems and materials to deal with.” “Everything was prefabricated off-site by Shackerley and delivered to site ‘installation-ready’ according to our priorities. The Harlow Gateway Leisure Centre regeneration initiative is providing local people with new and improved sports and leisure facilities. Listed in the London 2012 Olympic Pre-Games Training Camp Guide, Harlow is one of just 65 elite venues in the East of England and one of 600 across the UK, to feature in the guide. The building design incorporated two curved standing seam roofs intersecting above the main swimming pool. At the junction of the roofs, Saunders Architects designed a contemporary dual pitch feature skylight, running across the spine of the building and curved on both elevation and plan. Leadbitter, the main contractor, needed someone with a proven track record of designing, manuf acturing and installing complex glazing systems. Leadbitter Construction selected SkyLight Solutions to design, manufacture and install the glazing. SkyLight Solutions worked closely with Saunders Architects and Leadbitter to develop a completely bespoke facetted design that would hold the dynamic curvature of the glazed roof and also support the dimensional tolerances of the glulam framed building. With an amazing 326 indi vidual glass units, the curved roof is 76 metres in length and has a 4.2 metre span at the widest dimension and 3.8 metres high at the ridge. The design consisted of a Schüco FW60+ aluminium framework glazing system and pre-treated and finished with a Marine Grade Synthatec polyester powder coating. It was glazed with 6mm grey body tinted heat soaked tested, toughened, 16mm argon filled cavity with silicone edge seal, and 8.8mm clear laminated Pilkington Therm 4. The high performance framing and glazing prevents condensation build-up and maintains a controlled temperature inside the building at all times. Later this year the world will remember the terrible day ten years ago when terrorists flew fuel-laden airliners into New York’s iconic Twin Towers, and crashed two other airliners in Washington DC and Pennsylvania. It was a co-ordinated and horrific attack that brought war to Afghanistan and Iraq, costing countless more lives and which is still changing the face of the world. On 9/11 this year, a memorial to the dead will be finally opened, consisting of two pools, each nearly of one acre, set within the footprints of the Twin Towers, with the largest man-made waterfalls in the USA running down their sides. The names of the almost 3,000 people who died in New York, Pennsylvania, the Pentagon, and the February 1993 World Trade Center bombing will be inscribed around the edges. It will be a symbolic ceremony on 9/11, but an end of the beginning rather than the beginning of the end. Around the memorial, work on new megastructures will continue for some years. Completion of the centrepiece, One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, is scheduled for 2013 – although it’s risen to over 60 storeys, and growing by a storey a week. It is now part of the New York skyline. Some 2,500 construction workers are employed at Ground Zero, and not all of them above ground. Underground, there are transit links to complete and a cavernous memorial is taking shape. Above ground, an eight-acre landscaped Memorial Plaza is also planned to create a contemplative and quiet area away from the noise and bustle of the surrounding city. Tragically, it wasn’t the first time that an aeroplane had struck the New York skyline. That first happened in July1945 when a Mitchell B-25 bomber accidentally flew into the Empire State Building, killing 14 people. However, such was the structural overkill of the building that it sustained only relatively minor damage. Ironically, after 9/11, the Empire State Building once more took on the mantle of the city’s tallest building. The new Freedom Tower, which will take back the title, will have echoes of the Twin Towers. Its base is 200 ft square, the same footprint of the original towers, while its observation deck will be at 1,362 feet, the height of World Trade Center Tower Two, while its glass parapet will be at 1,368 feet, the height of World Trade Center Tower One. The key word is glass because the new architecture of the World Trade Center comprises 538,420 square feet of glass. That adds up to more than twelve acres, and a testament to the combined efforts of the glass industry over the intervening ten years to design glass and glazing systems of hitherto unimaginable strength. In urban areas, it’s estimated that between 80-85% of all secondary blast injuries are caused by flying glass. To put that into context, in New York on 9/11, 15,500 windows were damaged within a mile of Ground Zero – nearly 9,000 within half that distance. The Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities puts it more graphically: “When a terrorist bomb explodes in an urban area, it produces devastating effects, including structural and non-structural damage to buildings, injuries, and deaths. Numerous injuries in explosions result directly and indirectly from window glass failure.

“Direct glass-related injuries occur when glass shards flying and falling from fractured windows cause lacerations and abrasions. Secondary glassrelated injuries occur when the shock front of the blast wave passes into buildings through fenestrations vacated by fractured glazing.” The glass industry has learned many lessons in recent years, partly in response also to natural threats such as hurricanes, and has worked in partnership with engineers, architects and scientists to build better, stronger and safer glazing systems. Of course, no facade – of any material - could withstand an assault such as happened on 9/11. However, what the glass industry has managed to achieve are protective levels that would have impossible a decade ago. Companies like Wrightstyle have spent the intervening period better understanding adverse loading and the blast dynamics of different kinds of attack, then building and testing systems to withstand them. Our test regime, in Europe, the USA and the Far East tests both the glass and its framing system together in integrated units that we have also designed. That element of design compatibility is vital to the integrity of the overall system; and in an uncertain world compatibility is everything. In our biggest test, we subjected our structurally-glazed system to the equivalent of 500 kilos of TNT, acknowledged as an average-sized lorry bomb. The independent, and successful, test took place within a specialist and high-security RAF base in the north of England.

Our high-performance systems, not just for blast mitigation, can be found from Europe to the Middle- and Far East and from the USA to South Africa. We are involved in the London Olympics and were involved in the Athens Olympiad. In such a specialist area of design and supply, it’s a very small world. The real paradox is that, in an age of terrorism, architects are also looking to introduce more daylight into buildings and to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions – a new agenda for the glass industry where sustainability and environmental responsibility are also key design criteria.

In the building industry, it is rare to find a product which is unique. Equally, it is unusual to enjoy new technology which totally changes design and construction. That’s why new aerogel insulation (known as LumiraTM aerogel and previously called Nanogel® aerogel) is having such a global impact. Aerogel, particularly in the UK, mainland Europe and North America, in used by many different manufacturers of many different translucent cladding and rooflighting systems.

Daylighting, in the form of windows, glazed walls and rooflights, radically changes building envelope design and the ambience of interiors. It positively influences people, affects how they behave in their environment, changes their circadian rhythm and improves their well-being. In schools, for example, diffused daylighting in particular has a calming effect and marked influence on pupil learning and their behaviour. Obviously, the reason that this new insulation technology is so important is because architects and energy-conscious designers can now maximise large areas of daylighting while reducing heat loss. Importantly, well insulated daylighting will reduce energy consumption on heating, air-conditioning and artificial lighting. It means that rooflights can be up to many times more energy efficient as their predecessors. It means that when it is introduced inside the panels of translucent cladding and roofing systems a U value of up to 0.28 W.m2K is possible; this is as energy efficient as a solid wall and four times better than insulating glass units. Insulation in practice Globally, there are many buildings which incorporate Lumira aerogel. Projects in Europe include retail facilities, such as Carrefour, Tesco and Tegelmann’s climate market in Germany, through schools, leisure and healthcare projects, to commercial and industrial facilities, such as France’s High Speed Train workshop in Lyon.

What is LumiraTM aerogel? Sometimes called “frozen smoke”, aerogel is the lightest and best insulating solid in the world. Lumira aerogel is a hydrophobic aerogel produced as particles. Each particle consists largely of air, up to 95%, contained in a structure with pore sizes less than the mean free path of air molecules, which severely inhibits heat transfer through the material. Cabot produces Lumira aerogel in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located near Frankfurt, Germany where it began commercial production in 2003. Cabot certifies it has completed the EU REACH pre-registrations required for all Cabot aerogel products. The benefits of this insulation not only create healthier living, recreational and work spaces but help specifiers seek to meet or exceed stringent building codes, such as Part L in England and Wales and a similar standard in Scotland, Energieein-sparverordnung (EnEV) in Germany or Règlementation Technique in France. Convent at Louvain la Neuve, Belgium

An unusual application is the egg-chaped chapel attached to a new convent in Belgium, designed by architects Gery Despret and Benoit Gillon. Constructed largely in wood, with 7m high polycarbonate sheets to minimise weight, the cladding evenly diffuses natural daylight across the interior; at night artificial lighting gives the chapel an ethereal glow. The very high insulating performance has been achieved by filling the 25mm thick polycarbonate with the translucent aerogel. This provides a U value of 0.91 W/m2K, 55% light transmission and 24dB sound insulation. Supplementary heating is only required when the outside temperature is very low. Nearer home, there are UK systems which offer the option of including Lumira in polycarbonate roof lights and panelised glazing, in fibreglass diffused cladding and roofing and also within conventional double-glazing.

The Kalwall roof over a new extension at Turriff Academy in Scotland is an excellent example. Perhaps the most extreme example is the Halley V1 Research Station in Antarctica designed by UK architects Hugh Broughton with Faber Mausell. The central module, which accommodates most of the social areas, is lit with a large Okagel double-height, east facing glazing supplied by Okalux to give a U value of 0.3 – ie maximising and diffusing daylight while minimizing energy loss in the most extreme conditions on earth.

Another extreme example is Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska’s interior. Remote and with temperatures reaching -50, it is particularly interesting because, as with any military force, keeping thousands of cooped up personnel physically and mentally is critical. The result is a new 60,000sqm improved fitness centre which offers amenities such as an outsized exercise field of artificial turf, offices, restrooms, and a long elevated running track. The EU energy label rates an appliance on a scale from A, being the most efficient, to G, being the least efficient. These labels can also rate other elements, such as the water consumption and noise level of a washing machine. Additional ratings also come into play, as Start UK points out. For example, in the category of fridges and freezers, because most of today’s refrigerators score highly, the A to G scale has been extended to include A+, which is more efficient than A, and A++, being the most efficient. Washing machines are frequently described with three letters, such as AAB. The first letter concerns efficiency, as measured for a fully loaded 60 degree C cycle, while the second refers to wash performance and the third to spin performance.

When it comes to energy ratings and domestic appliances, builders need to be sure the appliances they are specifying and installing comply with current EU energy regulations. Knowing the current state of play in the ever changing energy minefield, and being able to advise customers on energy and cost savings, allows builders to offer an extra level of service and boost their own green credentials. Low energy housing is here to stay and will get even tougher as the Government moves to reduce the UK’s energy profile. There is no doubt that manufacturers will be encouraged to provide low energy/low water consumption products of ever increasing efficiency.

Appliances which carry the Energy Saving Recommended (ERC) label have been approved by the Energy Saving Trust. This means a product meets the ERC criteria of A+ and above for fridges, and AAA for washing machines. The EU’s Ecolabel scheme is voluntary and indicates environmentally friendly products. While the energy efficiency requirements for this scheme may not be the toughest, the rules for qualifying for an EU Ecolabel include the life cycle of an appliance, including recyclability potential and chemicals released during the manufacturing process. Windows, loft insulation, cars – EU energy ratings and regulations have applied to many product categories for several years. With domestic appliances now under scrutiny, builders must be aware of the energy ratings of the products they specify and install.

As a result, Beko makes major efforts to communicate to the building trade an understanding of the latest energy ratings and requirements. We continue to work closely with two major kitchen furniture manufacturers, Moores Furniture and Nolte Kuchen, both of whom already promote the benefits of low energy and sustainability.

Builders now have to meet some very stringent energy levels which ultimately contribute to positive planning consent being granted by Local Authorities. These energy code levels, which range from 3 to 6, award points for various energy savings throughout the fabric of a house and the additional items within it, such as household appliances.

With this in mind, during the next three months, national and regional builders will be contacted by the Beko Contract Sales Team who will present them with a Built In ‘Green’ brochure tailored to the demands of the code 3 to 6 requirements.

The most obvious categories, such as uPVC windows and loft insulation, have long been dealt with in terms of energy ratings. Now kitchen appliances are emerging as a new source of positive energy conservation. For manufacturers and their builder customers, offering A rated cooking units and A+ refrigeration and laundry products is fast becoming much more important than simply offering the lowest price.

What are the energy ratings? Start UK is a good source of information for builders looking to learn more about energy ratings. The organisation explains the three labelling schemes that rate a product according to its energy consumption: the EU energy label, which was first introduced in 1992, is a legal requirement; the Energy Saving Recommended label; and the EU Ecolabel.

What do these energy ratings mean? Since the A energy rating for refrigeration products was introduced 17 years ago, the rating for fridges and freezers has been divided into three categories: A, A+ and A++. In the case of refrigeration units rated A+ and A++, these appliances are at least 25% more efficient than basic A rated units, with some A++ units being up to 60% more efficient. For washing machines, washer-dryers, tumble dryers and dishwashers, the ratings which appear on the labels indicate washing, spinning and drying efficiency in terms of the energy required. Some appliances are also rated for noise levels: the lower the number, the quieter the appliance in operation. The future for energy ratings With effect from 20 June 2011, the EU energy label will be updated. This means that refrigeration units, washing machines and dishwashers will be graded according to three ratings: A+, A++ and A+++. The label will also indicate kWh, the amount of energy used by a given appliance in an hour. For ovens and tumble dryers, the new labels will not come into force until the end of this year or into 2012.

within a tight budget. Schools must be fit for purpose, yet designers must achieve ‘more for less’. Some element of standardisation and modular construction will enable these objectives to be achieved. Phased construction of the 13,000m2 school commenced in July last year, with the first phase already completed in September. A significant proportion of the design adopted MMC to accelerate construction times and enhance quality. The cross-laminated timber system adopted for the social hub of the college provided an efficient ‘all-in-one’ structural and substrate system that had the added benefit of enhancing the completed buildings’ air tightness – a key factor in low energy buildings.

TRADA Membership & Marketing Manager Rupert Scott explains why timber offers both sustainable as well as structural solutions for the built environment of the future. There is no doubt that the wood is much more part of the mainstream in architectural and engineering design today. In the UK, using wood has come much closer in practice to the situation elsewhere in Europe. A significant reason is the much greater awareness amongst specifiers of the environmental advantages of using wood, which besides being reflected in legislation, also resonates well with inherent concerns about designing sustainably. And structurally, timber is no longer restricted to housing and gridshell roofs, however breathtaking. With the advent of new, engineered timber products it can now compete with steel and concrete frame, and used alone or in conjunction with other materials, can inspire truly outstanding design. A good example is the Thomas Clarkson Community College (TCCC) in Wisbech, Cambs, a building which will form one of the case studies at TRADA’s In Touch with Timber conference within Timber Expo in September. In ‘Improving processes and performance’, examining developments in offsite and modern methods of construction (MMC), Director of Buildings & Design of structural engineers Ramboll, Simon Smith will focus on sustainable developments in education. Sustainability is a key theme of MMC and timber has advantages when considering environmental impact. The £32 million new build college, designed by Make architects, is a PFI Secondary School, procured under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) Framework. Although the James Review of Capital Investment was still under way when the project was started, TCCC has anticipated many of its recommendations. The challenge faced by government and the education sector is how to maintain quality

What makes ‘built off-site’ systems more efficient – and therefore more sustainable – is moving the bulk of the construction processes into well managed, factory conditions and performing minimum installation work on site. Timber composites overcome the dimensional limitations of sawn timber and can improve performance, structural properties and stability. Composites also optimise the use of material and correspondingly minimise waste. Examples of timber composites used extensively in structural applications, along with cross-laminated timber, are glue laminated timber (glulam), laminated veneer timber (LVL), laminated strand lumber (LSL), parallel strand timber (PSL), and oriented strand board (OSB). Composite forms also see timber working in combination with other materials in order to improve performance (Off-site and modern methods of timber construction – a sustainable approach): • Flitch beams - a timber-steel-timber sandwich configuration with enhanced strength and stiffness, which is particularly useful when depth and width of section is limited. • Timber-concrete composites – utilised primarily for floor slabs to improve fire resistance and acoustic separation, as well as enhancing strength and stiffness performance and the thermal mass of the building envelope. Novel use of cross-laminated timber & concrete composite construction (referred to as TimCrete) in the dance studios of TCCC enabled long spans to be produced whilst achieving the demanding vibration criteria for dance activities. • Structural insulated panels – a form of wall and roof construction with increased insulation and reduced cold bridging, acting compositely to perform structurally. And developments are taking place in areas other than product development. The shape of the industry in the UK is also changing, with new entrants into the sector who are pitched somewhere between the traditional supplier and the contractor. These specialist timber sub-contractors are taking the natural material and designing engineered timber systems. Then, by shouldering the technical burden and installing complete systems on site, they avoid delays and problems and ensure that timber is easy to specify and use to its full potential. • The latest product innovations in timber within the built environment will be showcased at Timber Expo 2011 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on the 27th & 28th September. Dricon Hits New Heights! Arch Timber Protection’s proven Dricon fire retardant treatment for timber will be protecting the refurbished Charles Inglis Clark (CIC) Memorial Hut, a climber’s facility on Ben Nevis. Ben Nevis is the tallest peak in the UK, and this could make the CIC hut the highest fire retardant project in the UK. The CIC hut was first built in the late 1920s and is owned by the Scottish Mountaineering Club. It is 685 m above sea level, below the cliffs on the north face, and is believed to be the only true mountain hut in the UK. This face is the main focus for snow and ice climbing, so the hut gets the heaviest use in the winter. “The hut is used by parties from the UK and all over the world,” says Andrew M James, Convener of the Huts Sub Committee. “Two years ago we built an extension which includes new living space and composting toilets and used a fire retardant on the internal wood linings that had to be applied by hand. This proved to be hard work, messy and not very cost-effective. The next stage of the project was to upgrade the interior of the original building, where a new wood lining over insulation to the timber frame will replace the original pitch pine lining. Once we were assured that it would meet the requirements of a single helicopter lift, less than 900 kg, we decided to use cladding pre-treated with Dricon fire retardant protection, to avoid the problems we had experienced with on site treatment”. With a date already booked for the work programme, to suit a low hut use period and better weather, Arch pulled out all the stops to prepare the treated timber in time. The project will use around 100 sq metres of 12 mm tongue and groove redwood internal timber cladding pre-treated with Dricon to meet Euroclass B standards and because of the access challenges to this remote site, all materials have to be airlifted in by helicopter. “Dricon is robust enough to protect the internal cladding from fire under the extreme conditions found in the winter on Ben Nevis and is the only BBAcertificated fire retardant treatment for timber, providing proven fire protection for interior applications such as this,” says Jacqui Hughes, Arch Timber Protection’s Fire Retardant Sales Manager. AL_A And AHEC To Transform V&A Museum Grand Entrance For The London Design Festival 2011 For the 2011 London Design Festival, landmark design installations by renowned British architects and designers will be seen across the city, and the American Hardwood Export Council has commissioned award-winning architects Amanda Levete Architects (AL_A) to design one of the most public. Now in its ninth year, the London Design Festival will be the largest and most significant yet, with an expected 180 partners and more than 250 events celebrating the world’s creative capital. For the third consecutive year, the London Design Festival will run a broad ranging programme of activity in residence at the Victoria & Albert Museum in west London, and together with Arup, AL_A has designed an installation around the V&A’s Grand Entrance. Entitled Timber Wave, the majestic three dimensional latticework spiral made from American red oak will span the height of the Museum doors in September and October, whilst Timber Expo is taking place in Coventry. Opening up long views along Cromwell Road, the installation takes the V&A out onto the street, and exuberantly celebrates the London Design Festival’s residency at the V&A. Repetition of motif is part of the didactic heritage of the V&A and this structure is born from that tradition. It creates its own balance and reflects the contemporary preoccupation with interconnectivity between disciplines. European Director of AHEC, David Venables praised the London Design Festival for challenging the thinking on design and use of materials. Since then, the timber has been processed from 25mm thick random width boards, down to form laminates, the foundation components for creating the shape of the ‘wave’. Timber Wave builds on a collection of installations supported and driven by the American Hardwood Export Council which demonstrate the performance, aesthetic and enduring qualities of American hardwood. For 2011, the red oak structure will completely transform the Museum’s Grand Entrance and is set to be a standout installation of the LDF programme. As part of Whitbread’s pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 26% before 2020, the remit for the new hotel was a saving of 70% on carbon emissions and 60% on water usage. Since ample car parking space is an essential for any hotel, the ground under the car park at the Burgess Hill Premier Inn seemed the ideal situation for ground probes to harness the heat permanently stored in the earth. Isoenergy therefore devised a planned system of ten boreholes in the parking area, all linked to a NIBE F1330 60kW heat pump. The F1330, designed specifically for multi-occupancy buildings, industrial premises and commercial premises such as hotels, is part of the latest generation of NIBE ground sourced pumps and, thanks to the unit’s two large scroll compressors, is designed to deliver four times the amount of energy input with absolutely minimal carbon emissions. It is already proving its worth at the Premier Inn not only taking care of central heating and cooling but also supplying 1,000 litres of hot water on demand. The water conserving methods used in the hotel’s building, furnishing and running – low-flow showerheads heads for instance, giving the feel of a conventional power shower but using far less water – also help to reduce hot water demand. Designer Air Curtains At Canary Wharf JS Air Curtains has designed and supplied eight vertical air curtain systems for The Park Pavilion complex in Canary Wharf. The six 3m and two 2.5m air curtains were supplied in brushed stainless steel and are positioned vertically at the sides of the entrance to the Park Pavilion complex and three of the interior doorways. As well as keeping the cold out in the winter, they can also keep the cool air conditioning in during the summer. Striking New Home Provides A Showcase For ICF Tech Sustainable Construction A new home in Somerset provides a model of light, open and sustainable design and a showcase for the benefits of ICF construction. Conceived by architect Simon Corbett, Pine Combe in Rowberrow is strikingly modern in its styling and features spans which only ICF-Tech could deliver. The initial concept for a five-bedroom, basemented family home involved extending and reconfiguring an existing 1800 sq ft bungalow on a site in School Lane in the picturesque village of Rowberrow, just 15 miles from Bristol. But with the backing of Sedgemoor Council the team opted to demolish the existing dwelling. This gave the architect and client the freedom to fulfil their vision for a family home with wide open internal and external spaces to match the open views which the plot commands. Even so, restrictions in the permissible scale of the new build – it could not exceed the ridge height of the existing bungalow – presented a challenge in creating the 3100 sq ft, five bedroom three bathroom configuration. The solution was to create a basement to provide the sleeping accommodation and to put the open plan living space on the upper, ground level floor. This brought into play two aspects of the project which help define its sustainable characteristics. ICF construction is increasingly widely accepted as a mainstream building method and is especially suitable for basemented buildings, because of its strength and its resistance to water ingress below ground level. ICF Tech, opened up other design possibilities which Simon turned distinctly to his advantage, maximising useable floor space and featuring a bottom cord-free exposed internal roof pitch to create the vista of openness and light. The levelling of the existing bungalow and the excavation involved in creating the basement area led to a potentially unsustainable situation in which significant amounts of rubble and quarried material would have to be removed from the site. In the event, only one single truckload of waste was removed from the site during the entire project. Instead, a three metre high gabion wall was created at the bottom of the steeply raked plot and backfilled with material from the basement excavation. With cadmium present in the ground in this area, eliminating the need to remove excavated material from the site was a major plus. Rubble from the demolition of the original bungalow was crushed on site and used as hardcore for tarmaced areas. Stone excavated to form the basement area was hand-worked on site then used as the natural stone cladding which is a feature of the new home, recessed pointed to create the dry stone appearance characteristic of the region. Using the ICF Tech system, developed by UK building systems company The Litchfield Group, gave the architect all the design freedom he required. The superstructure is constructed of ICFs and a GF steel beam network with beam and block floors. By vertically reinforcing the concrete ICF core from the

basement up to create vertical cantilevered walls above ground, the structure provides the strength to allow wide span widths across which a bottom cordfree exposed internal roof pitch was installed. In the main living space the angled ceiling, rising to 13 feet, combines with full height glazing to create an atrium effect. Says Simon Corbett: “The only alternative way of achieving this effect would have been to use steel framing which would have required complex junctions with other fabric and the risk of creating cold bridges. As Graeme Howorth, director of ICF Tech, points out ICFs also provide excellent U values which enable architects greater freedom in the use of other elements of house design whilst still adhering to sustainable requirements. The company has demonstrated in other schemes across the UK that ICF Tech walls are capable of achieving U-values of just 0.11 W/m2K, air infiltration of just 0.74 m3/m2/hr @ 50Pa and Y values of as low as 0.016 due to their excellent thermal bridging performance. Located in a conservation area, ‘Swiss Cottage’ is one of over 200 properties on the Estate, which is situated within the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just 15 miles north east of York. The design of the house was inspired by the Arts and Craft movement, which was developed in England during the second half of the 19th century.

Nigel Dyer, Sandtoft’s heritage services manager, added: “The roofers had to carefully draw the pattern onto a grid to enable our craftsmen to match the original tiles and fittings. Using our technical knowledge and specialist methods, we have produced authentic finished products which meet both the requirements of the local planners and the Castle Howard Estate.”

The steep-pitched roof features a distinctive geometric pattern and had to be entirely replaced as the tiles were severely weathered. Sandtoft’s Humber clay plain tiles in Natural Red and Antique Slate have been used on the main roof, plus an extensive number of arrow head feature tiles, also in Antique Slate. To meet the requirements of the local planning authority, the pattern had to be replicated using handmade tiles and ridges. Graham Dodds from Dodds Roofing Services, who was responsible for the reroofing, said: “We partnered with Sandtoft as it has extensive experience of working in conservation and restoration projects. The team advised us on the most appropriate products as well as the fixing specification. The decorative ridges and diamond shaped tiles were all handmade by Sandtoft’s skilled

Balcony Systems created a complex combination of curves in three axes to fulfil the architect’s demanding design for a photography enthusiast’s home office and studio in rural Yorkshire. Installed by Balcony’s sister company VBS, the curved fixed windows and three-pane sliding curved patio doors complement the curves of the circular building, built by contractors William Anelay Ltd of York. Featuring one fixed and two sliding panels, the doors when fully open provide a three metre-wide direct access to the garden. Their brown powder-coated frames replicate a bronze anodised finish to match the diamond-shaped pre-oxidised copper roof, supported by Borrowdale slate walls. Wildblood MacDonald Architects specified the unique design, with its sloping angular roof intersecting a curved face, for their client who wanted space and light to pursue his hobby. The stunning result is a ‘picture-perfect’ solution combining light-enhancing aesthetics with practical access and taking advantage of expansive countryside views. Balcony Systems’ Managing Director Effi Wolff personally took on the challenge of designing and producing such ‘non-standard’ and highly-unusual shapes, saying: “From a technical perspective, we were initially unsure whether we could achieve this as curving the aluminium frames required a combination of curves in three different axes. “It was quite a feat of engineering, so several test sections were made to check this in principle first before committing to the project. After much liaison with the VBS design team to confirm details, such as measurements and shapes, we achieved our ultimate goal. This was certainly no regular piece of aluminium joinery or glass bending!” Effi added: “We always enjoy a challenge and when architects or designers plan an unconventional shape like this, which has the

complexity of combining curved on plan windows with a sloping roof, we feel a great sense of achievement when we are able to fulfil the design envisaged and not revert to the safety of what has always been done. Architects are the ones that push design to its limits and I like to think that we are one of the companies that can realise the architects’ visions. “Installation on site went really smoothly thanks to the exactness of the design and manufacture. We are proud to have met this challenge and delivered a truly unique building for the client.” Project architects Philip Wright and James Maclean chose Balcony Systems for the company’s unique ability to meet the project’s demanding specification. “Balcony was literally the only company that could supply the curved elements, which are used to great effect on this bespoke building. Everyone is very satisfied with the result,” commented James. “Balcony Systems gave us good service, with flexibility and ease of communication throughout the project. It’s the first time we have used the company and it’s quite likely we will again,” he added. Yorkon Awarded £2.4m Contract At Lister Hospital, Stevenage Award-winning off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has been awarded a £2.4m construction contract at Lister Hospital in Stevenage – its second project at the hospital for East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The 24-module extension has just been craned into position using a 350 tonne crane. The operation took place over a weekend to further reduce any inconvenience to staff and patients. The project also includes extensive reconfiguration works to the existing laboratory suite, provision of stairs, lift, and an adjacent modular corridor. The roof-top extension was installed with partitions, mechanical and electrical services, windows and doors already in place to reduce time on site by around 50 per cent. Helifix Repair Techniques Avoid Disruption And Major Rebuilding

York Handmade Praised For “First-Class Job” In St Mary’s The York Handmade Brick Company, the leading independent brickmaker in the north of England, has provided 40,000 specially-made bricks and arches for an award-winning house in the heart of York. York Handmade, based at Forest Lane, Alne, near Easingwold, manufactured bespoke Old Clamp Blend bricks for 33 and 34 St Mary’s to fit in with the historic surroundings. The contract was worth £30,000 and the bricks helped the elegant town houses to win the New Residential category of the York Design Awards 2011. The houses are owned by Mr and Mrs Edward Waterson and Mr and Mrs Daniel Rose. David Armitage, the chairman of York Handmade, commented: “This was a hugely challenging and satisfying project. St Mary’s, which runs from Bootham down to the River Ouse, is steeped in history and is one of York’s most fascinating streets. “The original house on the site had been demolished, so we were starting from scratch. The aim was to ensure the two new houses fitted in seamlessly with the neighbouring houses in St Mary’s and we believe we have achieved that. They certainly don’t look out of place. As a company, we love working in York. This project came hard on the heels of our award-winning work on the new building for York St John on the corner of Gillygate and Lord Mayor’s Walk, in the shadow of the Bar Walls,” he added. The architects who worked on the project were Francis Johnson of Bridlington. Digby Harris of Francis Johnson commented: “The bricks that York Handmade supplied were first class. They matched the weathered bricks of the surrounding houses in St Mary’s perfectly and contributed to a very successful overall project”. A stone built cottage in Chipping Norton, over 150 years old, recently developed structural faults - the arch at the entrance to the archway on the right of the property was failing due to inadequate support. This led to distortion of the arch pier, and masonry cracking in the archway walls. The Helifix survey highlighted the front elevation as having inadequate lateral restraint which meant that outward movement had started to occur, causing further cracking. The floor joists at first and second floor levels ran parallel to front elevation with no physical tie in and only one structural cross wall existed at ground level. The Helifix repair scheme provided lateral restraint to the front elevation by installing HD BowTies through the brickwork and the sides of the first two floor joists, on both the first and second storeys, before bonding them into the masonry. By then bonding HeliBars into the mortar beds, at both first and second floor levels, full length masonry beams were created to assist in distributing the loads above the arch. BSRIA Measures Dust In The Desert BSRIA Instrument Solutions has supplied nine TSI DustTrak IIDRX aerosol monitors, and the means to power them, for use in assessing dust emissions from salt pans in the Sua Pan of the Kalahari Desert in North East Botswana. Regular watchers of Top Gear will probably remember the Sua Pan from the last series, when Clarkson’s Intrepid Trio crossed this bleakest of landscapes with great difficulty and the wreckage of another three old bangers and recognise some of the difficulties inherent in using rather more delicate equipment in such unfriendly desert conditions. The equipment is being used by Oxford University within part of a major research initiative that also involves use of meteorological masts and other gear to monitor wind stress, temperature gradients, soil moisture and atmospheric visibility among others things, for ultimate use in the prediction of climate change. With the TSI DustTraks BSRIA has supplied environmental enclosures, heatshields and the free-standing solar panels that are needed to recharge the machines’ batteries over the five months testing period.
