Sika Provides Top Grade Repair Solutions At Cambridge University Refurb In a conservation area at the University of Cambridge, global building product manufacturer Sika has supplied a comprehensive concrete repair and corrosion inhibitor system – fully compliant with BS EN 1504 standards – to return five ageing buildings to the highest standards of aesthetics, performance and weather resistance.

With all five buildings located within the conservation area, the repair system had to be completed with a sympathetic finish to the sensitive location. Approved to adhere to the area’s strict application requirements, two clear protective coatings – SikaGard 680S Cleargaze and SikaGard 700S – were applied to provide the final layer of weather protection.

Located on the western edge of Cambridge city centre, Sidgwick Site is home to several of the university’s arts and humanities faculties. Appointed to repair damaged concrete and protect the structural steel of five individual structures, contractor Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL) completed the 1,400m2 application within a 10 week works programme.

Offering expert specification advice and support, each product is manufactured and tested to the highest standards.

CRL applied Sika Monotop – a cementitious one-component system consisting of polymer modified mortars – to make primary repairs to the concrete frame. With good resistance to water and chloride penetration, the system provides long term protection to prevent future damage to the buildings’ concrete structure.

Wavin’s Aquacell Makes The Grade At New Primary School Built on greenbelt land prone to flooding, a new £5 million state-of-the-art primary school in Hull required an underground stormwater solution which would address surface water run-off. Used to create a large underground structure for the temporary storage of stormwater, the tried and tested AquaCell Core from Wavin, provided the ideal solution. Manufactured from virgin plastic for trafficked and deep applications, AquaCell Core was installed below an outdoor multi-use games area to create a storage tank for surface water prior to draining into the main sewerage system. Portakabin Delivers Interim Sixth Form Centre In Just Six Weeks Portakabin, the UK’s leading modular building specialist, has delivered an interim sixth form centre in just six weeks at a school in Cheshire after structural defects to an existing building meant alternative accommodation was urgently required. Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School needed high quality facilities to be fitted out over the school holidays and ready to use for 220 students by the start of the new term. The sixth form centre had to be completed in less than two months and this meant that the speed of the Portakabin hire solution was critical to ensure there was no disruption to teaching. Portakabin configured 15 steel-framed modules to meet the school’s exact requirements, which were installed to form three single-storey buildings. A spacious, open-plan sixth form study centre was constructed featuring a full-height glazed wall across the front elevation creating a bright and inspirational education environment. Two large double classroom buildings were sited adjacent to the study centre and the facilities include two multi-purpose classrooms and toilets, an art room, and café. A climate control system was also installed in each building to ensure a comfortable working environment for the staff and students. Portakabin provided a dedicated project manager for the scheme, and undertook all planning permissions, services and fitting out for the school. Site constraints meant that careful preparation was required in order to protect a shallow soak-away drain when the buildings were delivered. Despite the challenges, the project was delivered on time, on budget and to a tight timescale, providing the school with teaching and study facilities of the highest standard for use until the permanent building is repaired. Commenting on the project, Tony Halsall, Director of Business Services at the school, said, “At first it seemed an impossible task because we needed extensive high quality teaching and study facilities in a matter of weeks. For instance, in one area of the school the doors were coming from Scandinavia so the fixing centres weren’t standard and the operation of the handle was different. A Star-Tling Result For Orion Primary School The stars are shining at the new Orion Primary School in the London Borough of Barnet thanks to its exciting new Supacord carpet, supplied by UK-based fibre bonded carpet manufacturer Heckmondwike FB. As its motto is ‘recognising the star in everyone’, the school required the carpet to be incorporated with stars in several different colours throughout the corridor areas. The recent upgrade of the solid walls at Devoran School in Cornwall required a solution for the window openings with mimimum loss of space, but maintaining the low U-value required. Primary Conservation Ltd contacted the A. Proctor Group who recommended Spacetherm P (Spacetherm bonded to Plasterboard). Radmat And Thameside Roofing Delivers Textbook Refurbishment At London School Hauraton Channels Installed At Oldham Academy North Oldham Academy North, the latest Academy commissioned by Oldham Council, was handed over on time by main contractors Willmott Dixon ready for its official opening in April 2013. This £18.5 million E-ACT sponsored academy is a custom built facility on the former Newman College site in the Royston district of Oldham, Greater Manchester. The new Oldham Academy North, designed by architectural practice Aedas Architects, is a spacious and colourful three storey building set in sensitively landscaped grounds. With the site being quite flat, and the building surrounded by paved and asphalted surfaces, it was essential rainwater is drained effectively. A Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, 9mm slot gratings, was used by groundwork sub-contractor Westoak Construction to drain the paved playgrounds and asphalted car parks. The channels were also installed along parts the building’s façade and across entrance doors to facilitate drainage. The material, PA-GF used to make the FIBRETEC® grating, was especially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight. Complying with loading category Class C250 (BSEN 1433) the grating can easily take the weight of commercial delivery vehicles. The design is a real innovation as its non-corrosive material provides a visually appealing surface finish that retains its black colour. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled PE-PP. The six sizes offered are 160mm wide and range in height from 75mm to 201mm with the FIBRETEC® grating factory fitted on all models. satisfactorily with minimum disruption to the school, its teachers and pupils. Due to the large presence of asbestos-lined ceiling boards, all areas directly affected by the works needed daily air monitoring tests to ensure no presence of asbestos fibres where found.

Part of an £11.2m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme funded refurbishment, Kelmscott School required a reliable roofing system for the main school building and several language blocks. With over 900 pupils and the project starting prior to the 6 week summer holiday, it was vital that the 3,000m2 application caused minimal disruption and was also completed in time for the new term in September.

Installation of the roofing system first required Thameside Roofing to treat the existing metal roof surfaces before mechanically fixing Radmat’s timber faced EshaTherm PIR insulation board over the roof. The factory laminated 9mm plywood finish of the EshaTHerm PIR OSB Comp proving a smooth robust finish to complement the thermal performance improvements provided by the insulation.

Achieving the complex refurbishment programme within the required time period required the use of a variety of Esha Waterproofing Systems including selfadhesive EshaFlex 370 SA Black mineral reinforced bitumen membrane, EshaFlex 370 Black mineral reinforced bitumen membrane and EshaUniversal single layer POCB membrane – providing the perfect solution at Kelmscott School. Working closely with Radmat, Thameside Roofing completed the 12 week contract in just 8 weeks. Close liaison with the school proved paramount to the project’s success and early completion, with a substantial amount of planning and site co-ordination to ensure classrooms were vacated whilst roofing works took place without impacting on the school curriculum timetable. Careful planning was also required to install the roofing system safely and

To ensure the insulation board was protected by a durable long lasting roofing membrane Radmat specified EshaFlex 370 SA Black mineral, a self-adhesive SBS modified reinforced bitumen membrane for the main roof areas. Internal gutters were lined with EshaUniversal, a robust 3.2mm thick TPO modified single layer membrane without chippings to aid water flow. On completion of each phased segment of works, Thameside Roofing undertook the delicate operation of removing existing ceiling tiles from some 50 classrooms to allow the asbestos lining treatment to take place. On completion, the tiles were re-installed. Combining superb materials, high standards of workmanship and a 20 year insurance backed guarantee, Radmat and Thameside Roofing collaborated to extend the roofs’ life expectancies with a high quality refurbishment application that far exceeded the client’s expectations. Academies Save With Advice From Chartered Surveyors Delaney Marling Partnership (DMP) has undertaken fire reinstatement valuations for academy schools in Hull & East Riding of Yorkshire. DMP calculates the cost of each element involved in reinstating a school building in the event of a fire, according to guidance from RICS and the Insurance Industry Regulators. This valuation provides a school and its insurer with the correct level that the building should be insured for. In the past the method had been to calculate using a M2 costing however, when this was tested in a fire situation it was found to under estimate the cost to rebuild a property, leaving a gap in the insurance funding. Asset management plan DMP provided Beverley Grammar School in East Yorkshire with an asset management plan to highlight maintenance requirements over a 10 year period. In it a number of issues were discovered in the 100 year old library building and the asset survey identified that the main water storage tanks for the school’s heating system were sitting in the roof void in very poor condition. The presence of asbestos meant that the tanks had not been inspected for a number of years and the area was sealed off, leaving the school at risk from a number of issues that might have been detrimental under Health & Safety. However, following advice from DMP the school was able to bid for DfEE funding for a number of projects, one being the full library refurbishment. Nvelope Keeps New Student Housing Watertight In Plymouth NVELOPE, the rainscreen cladding support systems specialist, has supplied a new £19m student housing development in Plymouth with its NV6 system including brackets and NVELOPE carriers to provide secure installation of a façade which needs to withstand tough weathering conditions. With Plymouth thriving as a student town, more accommodation for the university was required. Built on a site that was previously the home of the Navy, Army and Air Force Institute, the Hoe Centre consists of 517 study bedrooms, management facilities, a landscaped courtyard and ground floor shops and restaurants. The brief required a modern and innovative structure which, whilst being practical and durable, is also capable of withstanding harsh coastal environment. A crucial criterion for the project was that the cladding had to be particularly watertight. To answer this demand, Roles Broderick, the cladding contractors for the project, specified brackets from NVELOPE.

Most people have a horror of germs on public toilet seats but, the seat is often one of the cleanest parts of the room. In fact, the floor is usually the dirtiest with tests carried out for ABC News revealed about 2 million bacteria per square inch. Green Screens Key To War On Air Pollution Says Staffordshire University Green screens will have a bigger and more instant impact on improving air quality than green roofs says Professor John Dover, Head of The Science Centre at Staffordshire University whose team have set up a study to investigate the value of green screens in rapidly mitigating pollution hotspots. The University, which has a dedicated Green Wall Centre, has been pioneering research since 2010 to understand how vertical greening of spaces can influence biodiversity and capture micro-pollutants thereby improving air quality, wellbeing and human health. This latest study into the value of particulate pollution mitigation by green screens and other hedging material will use the Science Centre’s environmental scanning electron microscope to quantify the ability of green screens to capture particulates and experimental screens will be installed in particulate hotspots in roads around Stoke-on-Trent to investigate the strategic placement of green screens Professor John Dover who is supervising the project said “While the potential for vegetation and ivy to be used as a trap for particulates has been revealed in previous studies, it is not the same as providing a practical solution for immediate air quality and management issues. Poor air quality is a serious issue particularly for people living and working in urban areas. Local authorities

Vent-Axia Donates Ventilation For Waste House Leading British ventilation manufacturer Vent-Axia is delighted to announce that it has donated ventilation equipment to the innovative Waste House project, which is launched today, Tuesday 10 June 2014, in an opening ceremony held at Brighton University. The Crawley-based firm was thrilled to supply a Sentinel Kinetic Plus Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) unit to Britain’s first house made almost entirely from thrown-away rubbish. Located in the grounds of the University of Brighton, approximately 85% of the building is made from discarded materials enabling the Waste House to achieve a negative carbon footprint. In addition, the Waste House leads the way in efficiency as one of the first buildings in the UK to gain an ‘A’ rated Energy Performance Certificate. Designed by University of Brighton lecturer and architect at BBM, Duncan Baker-Brown and built by main contractor Mears Group, the Waste House has vast local support including collaboration with the University of Brighton, the recycling organisation Freegle, Brighton and Hove City Council and City College. An exemplum of sustainable design and zero carbon living the Waste House is made from ‘rubbish’ and discarded building materials. The cavity walls are packed with materials otherwise destined for landfill – denim, VHS tapes, audio cassettes, floppy discs, remnant wallpaper, carpet tiles etc. Meanwhile, Gatwick Airport donated over 20,000 used toothbrushes provided in Business and First Class, now packed into the Waste House wall cavities. As the structure is highly-insulated and airtight, a MVHR system was specified to provide ventilation and heating. VentAxia therefore donated a Sentinel Kinetic Plus and in the true spirit of the project, it is an ex-test model. The inspiration for the Waste House was an earlier house designed for Channel Four’s Grand Designs series in 2008 by lecturer and architect Duncan BakerBrown, working with presenter Kevin McCloud who is a supporter of the Brighton project. Mr Baker-Brown said, “The purpose of the Waste House is to show that we can re-use materials in building so re-using Vent-Axia’s second-hand MVHR system is an important part of the picture. The unit was also a significant factor

Balfour Beatty And A Sustainable Cure For Guy’s Hospital

a 50/50 approach to the main user tower which involved cleaning and repairing concrete on its suspended, precast concrete balconies and overcladding the failing double glazed windows. This new facade will not only modernise the aesthetics of the towers but also provide environmental benefits according to Arup, with a potential saving of 18% of the tower’s total energy consumption.

Working at height surrounded by one of the busiest live hospitals in the UK was always going to be challenge but Balfour Beatty’s £26 million refurbishment of Guy’s Hospital in Southwark remains on track and will transform the appearance of the 142m high building. Key to the design is the long term efficiency and sustainability of the building, whilst being flexible enough if requirements change in the future.

But this is by no stretch a simple refurbishment with a staggering 8,000m2 of aluminium cladding panels installed in all elevations of the service tower and a further 5,300m2 of glazing units being installed in all elevations of the user tower. The glazing will use solar selective glass in order to minimise solar gain and optimise orientation. In total 34,500m2 of concrete is being cleaned and extensive concrete repairs carried out.

Built in 1974 and still the tallest hospital in Western Europe with two towers at 34 and 30 storeys, the concrete exterior of Guy’s Hospital was in need of a facelift having suffered from spalling which had exposed the steel reinforcement to further corrosion and its windows needed replacing. One option for client Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust was total demolition and rebuild but on a tight budget, the most feasible way to the secure the future of the hospital for the next 30 years and improve its environmental performance was a full refurbishment of the external façade, including new replacement windows and energy efficient aluminium cladding.

A high-performance thermal layer will also be applied to the outer face of the concrete columns behind the balconies and will be separated from the existing structure by a shallow void to minimise thermal bridging. “Repairing spalled concrete and installing new cladding systems directly to the structure was always going to be a challenge but when the work has to be carried out at height around a full functioning hospital without affecting staff, patients or the general public, it was particularly challenging,” commented John McCallion, Balfour Beatty Project Manager.

climbers provided direct access to the building face which enabled concrete repairs and the cladding system to be installed. “Repair work on the existing concrete included pulling 500 x 500 mm sections of concrete back to behind the existing reinforcement as far as 100 mm deep before being patch repaired,” added John McCallion. The challenging external refurbishment is further complicated by the level of work required inside the live environment of the hospital where the various teams have to work around the staff and patients with minimal disruption. Fully sealed floor to ceiling barriers were required to separate work zones so that finishes to window ledges could be completed while all materials were fabricated away from any work zone to minimise noise. Colours need to be neutral, with no patterns or ambiguous designs that can potentially upset patients, and finishes must be matt and muted. There also needs to be good contrast between floors and walls”. “But to make the space look less clinical and more welcoming we wanted to bring nature inside, by using natural-looking designs and products, wood effects, images of trees and flowers etc. And of course all the products need to be easy to clean and maintain long-term. German Floor Care Specialist, Dr. Schutz has teamed up with long term PRO Schutz Partner, Wolters Gebäude Property Management, to carry out a full floor refurbishment at Emmaus Nursing Home, Bonn, Germany. By applying Dr. Schutz PU Sealer and PU Design, the client benefitted from savings of over 60% in renovation costs

High traffic areas including the dining room and recreational areas were treated with Dr. Schutz hard-wearing sealer, PU AntiColor, for an easy to clean floor with a protective layer to keep from floor stains. The renovation was completed as each room received a coat of PU Sealer to protect against mechanical friction and chemicals and preserving the natural wood floor in the corridors.

Cologne-based Wolters Gebaude, specialists in room restoration and property management, were contracted to refurbish the PVC and linoleum floors in the Emmaus Nursing Home in Bonn. The floors were severely worn and dated from its conception in 1989.

Not only were these floors unsightly, but the time and costs required to maintain these floors were continuing to rise. The budget for a much needed floor replacement had been excluded and therefore a cost-effective refurbishment solution was required. The busy nursing home with a high volume of occupants meant it was imperative for minimum disruption whilst the entire building under-went its flooring revamp. The application at Emmauss Nursing Home was trifold, using different Dr. Schutz technologies as required. Contrary to classic, basic renovation, the flooring of the recreation room, utility room and lift were treated with Dr. Schutz TomCat EDGE to remove old layers of care products and prepare the surface for an optimal bonding layer. Dr. Schutz PU Design in RAL 9015 and RAL 9017 were applied to create a marble effect in accordance with future furnishings. It was vital for the renovation in the elevators to be as swift as possible. A developed UV Sealer by Dr. Schutz, now available in the UK, was applied on site. After the sealer was dried using UV machines, a complete flooring revamp had been achieved within a matter of hours and the lifts could return to full working use.

Within one day, the badly scratched and worn PVC floor had been completely renovated with the absence of noise, dirt and expensive floor replacement. First, some statistics There were 140 fire deaths in England between April and September last year, a 33% reduction on the same period ten years ago. Bridgewater House, Bristol In total, there was a UK reduction in reported fires of 69.5% between 1979 and 2007, although the cost of fire remains high. The Association of British Insurers estimated that in the first half of 2009, insurers paid out £639 million for fire damage - £3.6 million a day. On a worldwide scale, international fire statistics are collated by the World Fire Statistics Centre (WFSC), which estimates that costs due to fire add up to approximately 1% of global GDP – that’s €126 billion in Europe alone. In the industrialised world, fire deaths per 100,000 of population range from 0.02 in Singapore to 2.03 in Finland. The UK stands at 0.75. Beirut souks In other words, fire remains a potent threat, despite advances in building design and construction and the enforcement of strict building regulations. Essentially, fire safety in commercial buildings is down to three things: an alarm system to detect the danger, a sprinkler system to damp down the fire, and fireproof compartments to contain the fire at source and prevent it spreading. Taken together, those active and passive elements are designed to allow occupants to escape from the building, and provide safe access for the fire and rescue services. How those elements are applied depends on the size of the building, its complexity and its function. For example, an evacuation plan for a hospital or care home will be different to that of an office block, and require a different building safety approach. In other words, building safety also addresses the mobility, or otherwise, of its likely occupants. Whatever the building, compartmentation is fundamental to its safety, creating a series of protected fire zones to ensure that the fire is contained. For the glazed elements, the UK’s Glass and Glazing Federation has a specific guide on fire-resistant glazing. Fire is spread through three methods: convection, conduction and radiation, of which convection is the most dangerous. This is when smoke from the fire becomes trapped by the roof, spreading in all directions to form a deepening layer. Smoke, rather than fire, is often the real danger.Materials such as metal can absorb heat and transmit it to other rooms by conduction, where it can cause new fires to break out. Radiation transfers heat in the air, until it too sets off secondary fires, spreading the danger away from its original location.

The house building sector has helped the UK economy in recovering from recession and the initial pump priming emphasis has come from the Help to Buy initiative which has been both effective and timely. There is a massive pent up demand for homes supported by potential purchasers who may well be paying more for rents than repaying a mortgage. The majority of Help to Buy mortgages have been to first time buyers, increasing the demand for new homes. However, in the south east and London, the high house price inflation has been caused by shortage of supply. We have to realise house building is at a historic low. In 2013 121,000 houses were completed and this year it is predicted this will only increase to around 133,000. So when we consider that in 2007 we were completing 177,000 houses per year, we can see the recovery is only partly complete. While we have a partial recovery, both our customers and the wider construction industry would like to see steady growth which is both sustainable and predicable.

The Brick Industry has responded to the improved market conditions by increasing shifts and shortening maintenance shutdowns and has already begun reopening mothballed plants to cater for rising demand. The majority of brick factories were manufacturing bricks through the Christmas period for the first time in 5 years. Many brick factories are essential local employers often in rural locations of otherwise high unemployment. The steadily improving figures for house building have enabled production to be increased because of steadily rising demand benefitting the local communities.

SUSTAINABILITY IN VENTILATION: WHY IT MATTERS AND HOW TO ACHIEVE IT Ventilation at its most basic level can be as simple as opening a window to let the stale air out and the fresh air back in; however, the opportunities for opening windows in the UK are limited by weather conditions, heat loss and security. Up until quite recently, dwellings were designed to include only the most basic ventilation products, ranging from air bricks to window trickle vents and more latterly, simple extract systems. Unfortunately for just as long, properties have also suffered from the effects of condensation caused by inadequate means of ventilation.

mechanism. The filtered, pre-warmed air is then distributed around the home. According to the Zero Carbon Hub, in 2012 more than 24,000 MVHR units were installed in the UK and it seems that this is an increasing trend that will continue. There are many MVHR systems available today, but as with most things they vary in quality and effectiveness. The good news is that the best performing models are easy to identify by their heat exchange performance and Specific Fan Power, which are listed on the Product Characteristics Database (PCDB). Polypipe’s Silavent Green Line HRX2 currently tops the list with a heat exchange efficiency of up to 95%. Other key considerations when selecting an MVHR unit for maximum sustainability are the incorporation of a summer bypass facility which helps prevent homes from overheating during the warmer months and the type of fan built into the system. To comply with Building Regulations, specifying an MVHR or MEV unit with a low Specific Fan Power (SFP) – no higher than 1.5 Watts per litre per second (W/l/s) for MVHR or 0.7 W/(l/s) for MEV, is very important. A low SFP results in minimal energy usage and maximised air flow performance. Bathroom and kitchen fans also play a key role in most aspects of domestic ventilation, be they axial, centrifugal, wall or window mountable, or in-line versions. The SFP requirement for fans is set by Building Regulations but there are other considerations to take into account when looking for energy savings. One of these, and often overlooked, is the fan’s energy consumption when in standby mode.

Recent developments in the design and build of domestic properties have led towards ever more energy efficient homes, which aim for superior thermal performance and far greater levels of air tightness to minimise heat loss; thereby causing a subsequent increase in the use of balanced mechanical ventilation technologies. This adoption has also been reinforced by changes to Building Regulations Parts F and L, which are driving the need for good quality and sustainable ventilation solutions more than ever before. These ventilation systems and component parts must also be highly energy efficient if they are to play a part in reducing a property’s overall carbon footprint and ongoing energy usage. Clearly, opening a window or relying on an air brick is no longer an option, but then neither is using cheap, and by its nature, low quality mechanical ventilation appliances. So how do you ensure the equipment you specify/install provides a genuinely sustainable ventilation system that meets Building Regulations and NHBC guidelines, is SAP listed and enables you to comply with the Code for Sustainable Homes?

Domestic fans containing electronic controls, such as an overrun timer, can use anywhere between an extra 10-20% of the overall power used, when in standby. This actually means that despite a very low SFP, some fans will actually use more energy in standby mode over time. For example, a 6 Watt low energy fan running for a total of one hour per day consumes about 2kWh per year; astonishingly, on standby for the remainder of the day it uses a further 10kWh; therefore increasing the fan’s carbon consumption. Our own Silavent Green Line range of 100mm axial fans have been designed to use up to 70% less power when in standby mode than other low energy fans which, when combined with an SFP of 0.22 W/(l/s), makes them the most energy efficient range of axial fans available. But it’s not just equipment that makes a ventilation system sustainable. If you have gone to the trouble of identifying the most energy efficient and highest quality ventilation equipment, you must also ensure it is correctly installed.

You may think I am going to start with mechanical ventilation, but it’s ducting that’s my first port of call and that’s for good reason; no matter how sophisticated the chosen mechanical system is, if poor quality ducting is used, the benefits from the system are significantly reduced. Specify substandard ducting and it could mean anything between the ventilation system not meeting Building Regulations requirements to a room with an ugly stain in need of redecoration as a result of condensate leakage. The ducting must have exacting tolerances, i.e. a good fit of rigid extruded systems, such as Domus rigid duct. If the duct bows, or looks concave, or the wall thickness appears uneven, the tolerances will be too wide. If the duct doesn’t retain its shape, it can be difficult to fit together and result in air or condensate loss. Always opt for a duct system which has all the accessories you need to create the ventilation system as a whole and that has been designed to work in harmony as part of a system and finally, third party tested for end-to-end system performance.

Well engineered and designed ventilation duct systems maximise airflow, reduce air leakage and achieve greater system performance – vital in whole house ventilation systems. However, poor quality ventilation installations are in abundance; with grilles missing, duct sections not being sealed at joints, inappropriate use of low cost flexible duct, where rigid ducting should be used; and too many sharp bends in the duct system leading to reduced air flow. Due to such widespread poor installation practice which affects system efficiency – most notably the SFP – heavy penalties are applied to SAP calculations, the official method used to calculate the energy consumption in dwellings. Changes to Building Regulations Part F, Ventilation, directly addressed this by requiring a ‘qualified’ installer to commission new ventilation systems and submit a commissioning report to the Building Control Body (BCB). The Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) has also now stated that it will reduce SAP penalties if the systems are installed by a member of a registered Competent Person Scheme. The installation must meet the performance laid out in the original system design and an inspection checklist must be completed and submitted to Building Control. A check box in the SAP 2009 programme needs to be completed to enable improvement to the overall energy rating.

Alternatively, you might want to consider semi-rigid duct systems, such as the Domus Radial duct system, as an alternative to traditional ducting, especially for whole-house ventilation where space can be an issue. Traditional duct systems are based upon a branch design, with duct to rooms running off a main trunk connected to a Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) or Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) unit. A Radial system works differently in that each room vent is served by twin or single Ø75mm semi-rigid duct which connects to a distribution manifold, therefore providing a more even air flow. The manifold(s) is then connected to the mechanical appliance. For MEV and MVHR applications, the system benefits from less air leakage and improved air flow and a greater degree of room to room acoustic separation. It is vital to insulate ducting in colder areas such as loft spaces, to remove the possibility of condensation forming and to maintain thermal efficiency. As recommended by the NHBC, insulating duct in warm spaces with a solution which needs to include an integral vapour barrier in certain applications is also equally important, Unfortunately some existing duct insulating products are unable to meet current Building Regulations which specify a minimum standard equivalent to a material of ≤0.04W/ (m.K) at 25mm thickness. In order to do so it’s essential to use an insulation system such as patent accepted Domus Thermal, which is an engineered interlocking EPS (expanded polystyrene) system which exceeds the equivalent requirement at just 20mm thickness. The chosen insulation system must fit snugly around the duct and fittings with no air gaps and should be easy to install and secure once on.

However, existing training schemes have made limited progress according to the Zero Carbon Trust Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality (VIAQ) Task Group and members are calling on the Department of Communities and Local Government to consider mandatory competency requirements for MVHR installations so that standards can be improved. Working closely with the VIAQ Task Group, the NHBC has introduced a new chapter in their 2014 specification document, dedicated entirely to MVHR and is ikely to be taken very seriously by developers and builders alike. With all new homes expecting to reach zero carbon from 2016, which requires six points under the Code for Sustainable Homes and most new homes coming in at just three points, developers and builders have a considerable task ahead of them. MVHR and MEV systems are playing a role in this and are becoming ever more popular as a relatively low cost way of moving towards the zero carbon goal. But simply fitting any MVHR or MEV system isn’t good enough and fitting one poorly is no better. Take the time to research the most energy efficient, well designed and well made ventilation system and ensure it is designed, installed and commissioned competently, for a highly sustainable, long lasting, energy efficient ventilation solution.

The latest NHBC guidelines reinforce current Building Regulation requirements for not only ducting passing through cold spaces but also for insulating ducting between an MVHR appliance and the external terminals even when installed within the heated/insulated areas of the property, to avoid condensate forming on the outside of these colder ducts. Which now brings me on nicely to MVHR systems; MVHR systems work on the principle of extracting and re-using waste heat, such as that found in a bathroom or kitchen. MVHR systems efficiently pre-warm and filter fresh air drawn into the building with waste stale air using a heat exchanger; more than 95% of waste heat can be recovered by this

SIX STEPS TO SMOKE ALARM SPECIFICATION

Steve Browning, marketing manager at Trend Control Systems, examines why it is that people treat energy use in the workplace differently to their own homes, and what measures can be put in place to combat this problem.

The first to introduce an online smoke alarm specification tool back in 2011, Aico has launched its next generation Smoke Alarm Specification Selector for producing robust pre-written Smoke, Heat and MultiSensor alarm specifications. Neil Perdell, National Technical Manager at Aico Ltd. provides an overview of how you can create a bespoke specification for most domestic properties in six easy steps.

If further proof was required of the need for human beings to address their behaviour regarding energy use it came in a 2013 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which stated that scientists are 95 per cent certain that we are the ‘dominant cause’ of global warming since the 1950s.

Step 1: Property Type - The first stage in creating a smoke alarm specification is to identify your property type(s). The Selector lets you choose single, two to three or over four storeys; or if it is an HMO either single to two storeys or a property over three storeys. Larger properties may require a different type of alarm system than a standard domestic mains powered (Grade D) system, but the Selector will highlight if this is the case. The Selector then lets you modify the property specification to add even more detail to the layout and features, such as a loft conversion, solar power (a potential fire hazard as the associated electrical equipment is often installed in loft spaces) or an open plan layout as these will affect the alarm specification.

This probably won’t come as much of a surprise. However, the good news is that through greater awareness of the effects of CO2, combined with the financial implications of rising utility bills, individuals are more willing and able than ever to use energy wisely. This is definitely the case when it comes to the domestic sector but in workplaces throughout the nation energy is being wasted on a truly colossal scale. The question is, why are so many people prepared to treat energy use at work differently? According to research conducted by Trend Controls through its energy audits, 39 per cent of energy is wasted within the workplace. Perhaps of greater concern is that half of this figure can be directly attributed to poor behaviour, such as leaving lights on after vacating a room, the use of individual fan heaters and windows that are left open with the radiators turned on. People wouldn’t do this at home, so why do it in the workplace? To help establish a culture of energy efficiency, it is important to look at the causes of certain behaviour. For instance, if fan heaters are being used, it could be because certain parts of a building are not as warm as they should be. Making sure that a building has a comfortable temperature and good level of air quality is imperative in reducing activities that can lead to energy waste. In the vast majority of cases, individuals engage in this kind of behaviour as a result of a poorly installed, operated and maintained building services infrastructure that is controlled by an equally inefficient Building Energy Management System (BEMS). When a BEMS is first commissioned it is configured around existing building layouts and occupancy patterns. These elements can change over time and incorrectly configured time clocks and setpoints; conflicting heating and cooling technology; incorrectly calibrated control loops, valves, actuators and sensors; and the addition or relocation of equipment will have a highly detrimental effect on comfort conditions. A typical example is electrical equipment, such as a photocopier, being placed near a temperature sensor. This increases the temperature around the sensor, which will then call for cool air to reduce it. The cool airflow will affect adjacent controlled zones and people will feel colder and use fan heaters to warm up. This ‘heating fighting cooling’ scenario is all too common but one of the easiest problems to address. While this explanation is not intended to justify or excuse bad behaviour – opening a window when the heating is on makes no sense whichever way you look at it – it does explain certain actions. People are often so far removed from the BEMS that they feel powerless to make the type of ‘sensible’ adjustments that could reduce waste. Giving local control back to stakeholders is important and it’s something that BEMS manufacturers like Trend recognise. Its IQ®View8 display makes energy management as simple and accessible as possible. It has a full colour touchscreen display that provides a self-configuring user interface to a BEMS and its intuitive operation means that users can access and act upon energy management information instantly. If sited in a prominent location like the canteen, staff can view and adjust operating times, monitor alarms and make modifications to controller parameters. IQ®View8 has the ability to display schematics that provide real time information such as temperature, humidity and setpoints from the system – allowing users to directly adapt their environment and avoid taking alternative action. What’s more, it can also reset everything to a pre-defined state at a certain point in time. With a growing number of companies taking their corporate social responsibilities (CSR) seriously, those that want to increase stakeholder engagement can also use their BEMS to demonstrate their commitment to CO2 reduction and show the impact of their energy saving measures. Having a prominent visual reminder about energy use also reminds employees that their actions have environmental consequences and should, therefore, in turn encourage better behaviour. One way of doing this is through products such as Trend’s EnergyEYE, a software application that can be shown on a large format monitor. Often located in reception areas and other similar high traffic locations, it provides a view of a building’s energy performance and presents a continually updated record of its consumption and carbon emissions – showing at a glance whether they are on, below or above performance targets. Wasting energy is like pouring money down the drain and with much of a building’s energy consumption influenced by its occupants, their actions play a large part in dealing with this issue. The first step is to minimise the likelihood of bad human behaviour by optimising a BEMS and ensuring that the building services infrastructure is working correctly. The second is to provide employees with the necessary tools to control the conditions that they have to work in. This will require effort but the results will be well worth the hard work. www.trendcontrols.com

Step 2: Level of Protection - Once you have identified your property type, it’s time to choose the level of protection required. This will generally be dependent on a risk assessment of the property and its occupants, with smokers and the infirm, for example, requiring a higher level of protection. To cater for this the Selector lets you choose from High (Category LD1) through to Minimum (Category LD3) protection. For those unsure, Aico recommends Medium protection (Category LD2) for the majority of installtions. The level of protection required will dictate the number of rooms to be protected with an alarm, as laid out in BS 5839-6:2013 (the standard for domestic smoke alarm installations). Step 3: Alarm Power / Back-Up - Before you go on to decide what type of alarm sensors you need, you must determine the alarms’ power source. There are three options: Grade D mains powered alarms with rechargeable Lithium battery back-up (recommended by Aico), Grade D mains powered with alkaline battery back-up and Grade F battery powered alarms only. Mains powered alarms with rechargeable Lithium back-up will always be superior as they don’t suffer from the major issue of batteries requiring replacement and/or being removed by tenants. Stage 4: Alarm Sensor Type - The initial decision to be made at this stage is between ‘standard’ alarms (Optical, Ionisation and Heat) or the more advanced Aico Multi-Sensor alarm (in conjunction with a heat alarm in the kitchen and garage if applicable). Optical and Ionisation alarms both detect smoke, albeit in different ways making them suitable for different fire types and therefore different locations. Optical alarms are most effective at detecting smouldering fires with large particles, such as produced by burning furniture, and are less likely to react to the type of invisible smoke produced by cooking fumes, so are recommended for circulation spaces such as hallways close to kitchens and landings. However, they can react to steam, so should not be located too close to bathrooms. Ionisation alarms are less likely to false alarm from dense tobacco smoke, excessive dust and insect ingress and are sensitive to fast flaming fires. However, they are also sensitive to cooking fumes, so shouldn’t be used anywhere near a kitchen. Heat alarms don’t detect smoke at all, but instead react to temperatures of 58ºC or over. A Heat alarm should only be used in a kitchen or garage, and only as part of a fire alarm system that also includes interconnected smoke alarms. However for the ultimate protection, Aico recommends the Multi-Sensor. as this provides the best response to all different fire types. This alarm combines optical and heat sensors and has built-in intelligence which enables it to not only monitor the signals from both sensors, but also to interpret them. This allows it to detect all different fire types, from fast flaming through to slow smouldering, and provide the best possible protection to tenants. Stage 5: Alarm Interconnection - Under Building Regulations and BS 5839-6:2013, smoke alarms should be interconnected within a property; it provides an earlier warning for residents and the best chance of escape. You can choose to do this by traditional hard wiring or by using wireless interconnection technology such as Aico’s RadioLINK Professional. Bauder’s photovoltaic (PV) system installation at Tintern Abbey led to the company’s second success of the night, having also been shortlisted in the same category for its work on the Awel-y-Mor Primary School, a project that features Bauder’s bitumen, single ply, green roof and PV systems. Roof areas totalling 630m² were fitted with 57 state-of-the-art PV Modules on Tintern Abbey Gift Shop, enabling it to generate at least 14.05 Megawatt Hours of solar power each year. Due to the abbey’s historical significance it was important that the PV system did not to create a distraction from the building itself; and the low profile of the photovoltaic modules, which are set at a 10° angle, made sure this was not an issue. The Bauder team worked closely with the client throughout the project ensuring the new roof complimented what is a site of great national importance to the Welsh community. Once again, the search is underway to find the best brickwork in action for the 2014 Brick Awards, organised by the Brick Development Association. The Awards are one of the top design and construction awards in the country and show just what brick – the UK’s most popular cladding material – can achieve. Last year’s winners included the Ortus , a learning facility in London, Carmelite Monastry in Liverpool and the Britten – Pears Archive in Suffolk. Entrants are judged on a wide range of architectural design factors including demonstrating the building fabric’s sustainability credentials and the aesthetical choice, blend and bond of brick. The judges are also seeking attention to structural and aesthetical brick detailing, the buildings contribution to its context and quality of craftsmanship. 17 prestigious trophies are up for grabs. A new category was introduced last year – the BDA Chairman’s Award. This award is outside the judging panel and is in recognition of a project which fulfils a need that the Chairman considers important. The Awards are open to anyone, whether they are architects/ designers, building owners, developers, housebuilders, contractors or brick manufacturers. The only stipulation is that the project – unless it’s featured in the Worldwide category – must feature clay bricks or pavers made by BDA members. Double Win For Bauder At National Roofing Awards 2014 Flat roofing specialist Bauder was recognised at this year’s National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) annual awards, winning two of the top prizes on offer for its work on Fulham Jetty and the Tintern Abbey Gift Shop. The award winners were announced on May 16th at the Hilton Metropole in London, an event co-hosted by TV Presenter and Interior Designer Linda Barker and NFRC Chief Executive Ray Horwood. Now in its ninth year, the Roofing Awards are an industry-wide competition that celebrates outstanding standards of workmanship and safety within the roofing industry. This year the level of competition was higher than ever before with the NFRC receiving almost 300 project entries for the eleven award categories available. A wide range of criteria are taken into consideration by the judging panel when determining category winners including: degree of difficulty, aesthetics, problemsolving and environmental qualities. Bauder took home both awards for sustainable roofs at the ceremony winning the Green Roofs category for Fulham Jetty and the Solar category for Tintern Abbey Gift Shop. The Fulham Jetty project involved the ecological enhancement of a 1,000m² abandoned jetty located on the River Thames in London. The roof of the new building swoops down to become a continuum with the deck and is covered with a green habitat to provide three distinct environments for wildlife, one on the flat roof, one on the slope and the third on the jetty deck. So changing its IT culture is no small challenge – but it is one that the Council has stepped up to, with a refreshing ability to test and adopt new ideas. At the heart of the change is the server architecture that underpins all activity, and a move to a central Council File Plan with all data held on a single central drive. So a move away from personal email folders in Outlook is implicit. Aico Alarms And Control Switch Fitted By Scottish Council West Lothian Council is fitting Aico Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms, with its unique Alarm Control Switch, across all 13,500 of its properties. The council is fitting Aico 160RC Series mains powered Smoke and Heat alarms and Aico’s new Ei208WRF cost-effective Lithium battery powered CO alarms. The alarms are interconnected using Aico’s proven RadioLINK Professional wireless interconnection technology. When one alarm is triggered, all the alarms interconnected on the system will sound. If the alarms sound, it is important to be able to tell whether a fire or CO leak has been detected so that appropriate action can be taken. Manor House Exercises Good Judgement With Cantifix Selection This rural manor house in Oxfordshire was renovated and extended in 2013 to include a swimming pool room and gym room - both of which benefit from extensive use of sleek, frameless glazing. The Circadian Paradigmn The circadian rhythm holds a large influence over human performance. Being a little over twenty-four hours long, the circadian clock is reset by information from our environment with a major factor being light information. Indeed very recent concerns have been aired in the press about the effect of technology “blue light” from mobile devices and computers adversely disrupting sleeping patterns and ultimately affecting health. That is not to say that blue light is the enemy though Studies have shown that as a major part of natural sunlight, blue light has been shown to have positive influences over the synapses in the brain, stimulating and strengthening them helping to handle emotional challenges and regulate mood. Applying the principal that there is reduced sunlight in winter would indicate that by possibly boosting blue light exposure in the indoor environment during this time may significantly boost mood and work response. Overall the effect would be to produce a consistent level of mood and productivity across the year by aligning the environmental lighting. Bio-adaptive lighting The ability to control human bio-rhythms and physiological responses through controllable lighting is a truly exciting concept and one that is fast gaining adoption across many areas of life, especially in the teaching environment. Studies in the Netherlands showed the positive effects that light of different colour temperatures

had on pupils concentration levels. A study in Hamburg demonstrated the direct effects of controllable lighting with reading speed increasing 35% and an acute decrease in errors and a positive increase in concentration. The ability to give teachers control over the lighting enables them to dynamically adjust the environment to match the class mood. Lighting states can be divided into scenes to target a particular response such as an energy boosting setting with a cool “blue rich” white light, another for focusing attention with bright white light and another using a red toned white to create an aura of calm. Lighting The Way The Golborne Road Railway Bridge is an iconic Victorian iron bridge in London’s Kensington and Chelsea. Recently, its illumination has been upgraded using Roblon fibre optics and lighting fittings supplied by Light Projects. Designed and specified by Urban Eye, specialists in using light and specialist surface finishes to transform urban areas, a stunning mix of decorative and task lighting has been installed to provide a safe well-lit road and walkways. This also creates a visual spectacle when seen from all angles, while light spill and glare to the surrounding areas are minimised. The scheme was developed in conjunction with Network Rail and Kensington & Chelsea Council. Exterior mounted Roblon LED fibre optics with Beespot end points are used together with a blue linear LED system which highlights the graceful sweeping curve of the trusses. Trief Kerbs Deliver Enhanced Safety For Major Overhaul Of Manchester Transport Network Trief vehicle containment kerbs from Brett Landscaping have been specified to provide protection on bridges as part of Manchester’s major Metrolink project. The proven quality of Trief – the only product of its type to be independently tested to the BS EN 1317-2 standard for road restraint systems – was instrumental in Brett Landscaping being chosen for use within Phase 3 of Metrolink, Manchester’s light rail system. This project has seen the creation of around 60km of new tram lines to connect the city to outlying areas including Oldham. As part of this process, nearly 80 bridges have been refurbished, repaired or strengthened to provide a low-maintenance system with a minimum 50 year structural design life. Safety was a critical element of the bridge design, with enhanced containment required to protect against the risk of vehicles crashing onto bridge parapets and potentially onto the tram lines below. While standard crash barriers have been used where appropriate, there were a number of bridges in the Oldham area with relatively narrow road access, where such barriers would be unduly intrusive. Delivery partner Parsons Brinckerhoff helped the client Transport for Greater Manchester to review alternative containment methods and identified that safety containment kerbs represented an acceptable solution. “With road speeds across these bridges being no greater than 30mph, we could calculate the level of risk accordingly, and safety kerbs fitted the bill,” explains the company’s Mungo Stacy. Even so, selecting a suitable containment kerbing system still required extensive research to find a well-engineered safety kerb that was proven to deliver the required standard of safety – and the unique credentials of Trief made it particularly attractive to the Metrolink team. While the Trief system has delivered a high level of vehicle and pedestrian safety since its launch in 1963, Brett Landscaping was not content to trust to past

achievements and set out to prove the credentials of the system by becoming the first kerb manufacturer to test its vehicle containment kerb against the rigours of the latest BS EN 1317-2 standard for road restraint systems. The best-selling Trief GST2A Kerb was therefore tested by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) at their globally renowned test centre in Crowthorne. Not only did Trief become the first of its type to pass the rigorous BS EN 1317-2 standard for Road Restraint Systems, it did so with the highest available A rating for impact severity, whilst the containment level was determined as N1. This proved decisive for Metrolink. “The fact that Brett Landscaping had successfully sought compliance with BS EN 1317-2, combined with its common usage by local highway authorities across Britain, ensured that Trief had the ideal credentials for this project,” confirms Mike Hann of Jacobs, who designed the bridge solution. The 400mm-high Trief containment kerb, which has been installed between carriageway and footway at 18 bridges, works in three ways. In the first instance, it provides an obvious visual deterrent. Secondly, if the vehicle deviates from the carriageway, the 25mm upstand provides an initial physical warning to the driver that their vehicle is leaving the carriageway. Finally, if the driver does not take the necessary action, the Trief Kerb’s unique profile passively prevents the vehicle from mounting the kerb and guides it back onto the carriageway, without propelling it into other lanes of traffic. Groundworks were completed by principal contractor MPT (a consortium of Laing O'Rourke, Volker Rail and Thales), who were impressed by the quality of the Trief solution from Brett Landscaping. Bailey Streetcene were approached to supply street furniture City park, a high quality, six acre public space in the heart of Bradford. City Park’s 4000m2 mirror pool features more than 100 fountains, including the tallest in any UK city at 30m (100ft), laser light projectors and mist effects. This unique feature reflects and showcases the Grade 1-listed City Hall and sets Bradford apart. City Park, and the mirror pool in particular, is an adaptable environment which is capable of holding events such as carnivals, markets, theatre productions, screenings and community festivals. It was mocked in its earliest days, as a dotty dream, an architect’s fancy or just the “puddle in the park”. But after nine years of arguments and scrabbling for money, the Yorkshire city of Bradford has pulled it off: a vast mirror pool splashed by 107 fountains now glistens beside the Victorian city hall. The largest water feature in any UK city, the £24.4m pleasure ground’s cycle starts with low-lying steam at dawn – an urban Scotch mist – then sees three shallow sunken bowls slowly fill with water until dusk when an underwater light show begins. Camera-controlled lasers also plays tricks with visitors after dark, lassoing them with loops of light as they stroll around an area as big as three full-sized football pitches. Other features include “walking on water” – a narrow causeway across the flooded area – children’s fountains that throw balls of water at one another, and a central jet with a maximum reach – reserved for special events and dubbed the Bradford Burst – of 30 metres. Welcome waterworks Praise received from passing tourists will delight Bradford’s cabinet member for regeneration, Labour councillor David Green, and the council’s Strategic Director, Barra Mac Ruarí, who have overseen the plan’s implementation. The lake has changed shape from Alsop Architects’ original teardrop – “It virtually lapped at the walls of City Hall and we weren’t sure about that,” says Green – but the scale and ambition are a match for Bradford’s grand 19th-century “Woolopolis” heyday. Those historical watery achievements included Europe’s largest sewage works with a three-mile disposal tunnel big enough to take an opening procession of locally made Jowett cars carrying the lord mayor and aldermen.

In the same spirit, pre-launch VIP visitors for the new water feature have been ushered into the urban lake’s underground workings – six kilometres of piping and a tank like a Byzantine cistern in Istanbul. “We have got to think big and be bold because that is the way to bring in business and visitors,” says Mac Ruarí. The pool and its sinuous park, which has London plane, larch and Scots pines planted instead of dinky blossom trees, won all-party support on independent estimates that it would bring £80m a year to Bradford. Officially called the City Park, it connects the Victorian centre of Bradford with the National Media Museum, the Alhambra theatre and the university, whose buildings and parkland run up a gentle valley to the west. Attention now turns to attracting new businesses to finance a cluster of proposed office blocks beside the pool, and the long-awaited completion of a Westfield shopping mall on the other side of city hall. The recession stalled work there when only the foundations had been laid, leaving a desolate empty space nicknamed the Hole in the Heart, marginally improved in the last two years by a temporary minipark. Breeding success Other challenges include converting the derelict Odeon cinema, which overlooks the mirror pool, into offices with Homes and Community Agency funding, and talking up the image of Bradford as more than Leeds’ has-been, poor relation. Gideon Seymour, who runs an art gallery between a cafe and a restaurant by the pool, says: “Each success breeds more, and the pool and fountains are the biggest success so far.” To enhance the public’s experience of this striking feature, Bailey Streetscene was approached to provide the street furniture surrounding the pool. The high quality feel of this scheme required high class design and material finishes to the products selected which Bailey Streetscene was able to supply. Schöck Isokorb For Landmark Social Justice Centre A former factory building in Vauxhall, next to the Oval in south London, is being redeveloped as a new landmark Social Justice Centre. Known as The Foundry, the Centre will provide a highly accessible and energy efficient base for organisations working in social justice and human rights. The project, designed by London architects 00:/ for Ethical Property, involves extensive refurbishment of the existing building with the installation of new lifts and services throughout; and the construction of a new two-storey extension that will act as the public frontage of the building on Oval Way. The development has a welcoming highly transparent entrance space with a glazed front façade and public seating to attract passers-by. It is anticipated that the building will be home for up to 40 organisations, providing flexible office facilities, a conference hall, meeting rooms, a public cafeteria and exhibition space. A rooftop garden even features planters, intensive green roof spaces, picnic areas and beehives The new build element of the works involves the extensive use of an exposed concrete structure and this will act as a heat sink for the building, which will achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. A feature of the design is a continuous external canopy structure at all three floor levels and the prevention of thermal bridging at the connectivity points was an important consideration. It is the Isokorb type K thermal break from Schöck that has been incorporated to solve the problem. Not only does it provide an efficient thermal break between the varied connection profile and the concrete structure, it also transfers bending moment, stress and shear forces and reduces thermal losses to a minimum by virtue of its innovative technology (HTE

module compression bearings). In addition, plastic jackets on the concrete pressure bearings provide trouble-free movement and flush-mounted pressure bearings facilitate easy installation on site. The extensive Schöck Isokorb range allows connections to be made between concrete-to-concrete, concrete-to-steel and steel-to-steel; with one of the modular connection types even allowing the retro-fitting of balconies in certain situations. The Isokorb range also provides BBA Certification, LABC Registration and it comfortably exceeds the requirements of BRE IP1/06 and Part L of the Building Regulations where the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (fRSI), must be greater than, or equal to, 0.50 for commercial buildings. A stipulation comfortably exceeded by incorporating the Schöck product into the design. There is also compliance with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2009, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings, and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. Here, the lambda values of the Schöck Isokorb enables energy loss through balconies, canopies and other cantilever parts of the building to be reduced by as much as 84% to 91%. Structural Timber – The Solution To The Sustainable Construction Demand With the government’s commitment to the lowering of CO₂ emissions in construction, together with numerous announcements that all new homes will be zero carbon rated by 2020, thermal insulation and lower air leakage requirements will increase dramatically. There are now two targets to meet for houses - as well as the Target Emission Rate (TER) at 6% reduction in CO₂ for residential and 9% for commercial, dwellings also needs to meet a Target Fabric Energy Efficiency (TFEE) measured in kWh/m2/year. For architects and specifiers this improvement is attainable by adopting the tried and tested ‘fabric first’ principles, especially when the structural timber provider is integrated early enough in the project process to allow efficient and effective design. But how do professionals ensure design translates to the ‘as built’ performance across the commercial development sectors? Selecting the appropriate structural timber system to deliver the correct performance specification within budget is no mean feat and with so many new engineered timber systems coming to market, keeping abreast of industry innovations can be time consuming. Timber Frame and Panel Solutions have vastly improved since the original ‘stick built’ frames and now single and twin closed frame panel systems are widely manufactured, with more sophisticated systems coming to market using factory fitted windows and cladding solutions. The complete panel is manufactured to exacting standards thereby eliminating the margin for error in the onsite assembly process - ensuring airtightness and the delivery of U-values as low as 0.09 to 0.14 W/m2K using a standard 270mm deep panel. Structural Insulated Panel Systems (SIPS ) are an advanced method of construction, offering superior insulation, structural strength and airtightness. SIP systems are used in floors, walls and roofs and have been developed around composite (or sandwich) panel techniques, creating a product with excellent structural and thermal characteristics. SIPS consist of two parallel faces - usually Oriented Strand Board, sandwiching a rigid core of Polyurethane (PU) foam or Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), making them lightweight, quick to erect and free from problems of compression shrinkage and cold bridging. SIPS deliver U-values as low as 0.08 to 0.14 W/m2K using standard panels ranging from 100m to 200mm deep.

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) – an engineered timber panel more commonly used in larger commercial construction and is particularly favoured for educational, leisure and retail buildings. CLT is a structural two-way spanning timber panel that can be used to form walls, roof and floor panels as well as shear walls. It is produced by laminating and finger jointing soft wood timber lamellas at 90° to the layer below, this can encompass between 3 and 27 layers. CLT is extremely stable, making it optimum solution for medium rise housing, as it has little shrinkage or movement post construction. It has proven multi-storey capability, up to 9 floors in the UK and a structural capacity beyond this. Typical walls for 5-6 storey construction are often in the region of 100-140mm thick. The benefits in construction are numerous - from reduced loading on foundations and infrastructure services, to impressive thermal, acoustic and airtightness performance over more traditional materials. All of these structural timber systems, as offsite construction solutions, offer speed of build, strength as a core structural component and importantly sustainability – having the ability to meet and even exceed Building Regulations and if the brief demands, in some cases deliver Passiv Standards. The choice of structural systems and the variations within the manufacturer’s portfolios are vast – requiring a focused approach to keep up with the latest innovations. FIVE - A sensational Collection By OKAY Studio Made From Five American Hardwoods Is Now Open At The SCIN Gallery For Clerkenwell Design Week The American Hardwood Export Council has collaborated with five teams from design collective OKAY Studio to produce a mix of innovative designs for Clerkenwell Design Week 2014. The project celebrates the fifth edition of Clerkenwell Design Week and demonstrates the versatility of five American hardwood species. Mathias Hahn, Liliana Ovalle, Ed Swan, Andrew Haythornthwaite and Peter Marigold (collaborating for this project), and partnership Hunting & Narud, each approached the project with their own unique style and the result is a diverse collection of fresh and invigorating pieces culminating in the exhibition, ‘FIVE’. The exhibition design itself is the brainchild of Andrew Haythornthwaite and is open at The SCIN Gallery, on Old Street. In February, the design teams were presented with the five timbers - American ash, cherry, hard maple, red oak and tulipwood and asked to present a design inspired by these timbers and the number five. Demonstrating OKAY Studio’s creative flair, the designs are unique and inspired, studying the beauty, texture, colour and performance of American hardwoods through sculptures, furniture and tableware. Kent-based maker, Adam Kershaw, has been integral to the project, offering guidance during the design process, and eventually making three of the five projects - Apex Tables, Shift Series and Claroscuro. The fabrication of Tulou and Runcible was outsourced. Renowned for his craftsmanship and skill with wood, he comments, ‘Working with OKAY Studio has been an extremely refreshing experience; their

perception of materials is intuitive and untainted by tradition and practicality, resulting in challenging and innovative designs. It was interesting to work with timber species that are not commonly specified by clients, yet are the most abundant and versatile timbers in the U.S. hardwood forest and have the potential to make a much greater contribution to 21st century product design. It’s important that we share this knowledge with designers.’ The material was provided by Morgan Timber based in Rochester. David Venables, European Director of the American Hardwood Export Council comments, ‘The vast temperate hardwood forests of the Eastern United States provide an abundance and diversity of timber species. Given current furniture fashion you may be forgiven for thinking our forests are all about white oak and walnut. This is not the case; white oak is not the most abundant oak species and walnut is less than 1% of the standing hardwood trees in the forests. ‘The five species we selected for this project (ash, maple, red oak, tulipwood and cherry), account for over 50% of the resource. Establishing a balance between market demand and the dynamic of the forest is essential to achieve true sustainability. I love the enthusiasm that OKAY Studio brought to this project and hope we have inspired them to use these sustainable hardwoods in future product design.’ Enquiry No 74

Castle Has A 20 Year Secret Built by Henry VIII between 1539-1540, Walmer Castle (Kent) was to serve a purpose as an artillery fortress, guarding England from the threat of French and Spanish invasions. The castle has since enjoyed the attention of locals and tourists alike, and have received the honour of welcoming Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, within its walls. A threat of a different kind to the castle however, still remained, that of the risk of a fire destroying this important part of our heritage. Over 20 years ago, the Envirograf® technical team was contacted, to offer fire protective coatings for the wooden panels on the walls within the living quarters of the residency. RIEFA Lightweight Living Roofs Riefa boards are a new type of green roof substrate. They are a hi-tech fibre board made from organically grown and sustainable natural resources, including rye flour and tree bark. The manufacturing process is essentially the same as baking: the ingredients are mixed in dough bins and then baked in second- life biscuit ovens. Riefa boards are primarily used as an insulation board in the manufacture of doors and as a sound insulation in partition walls. The dimensions of the boards in their dry condition are 18mm thick and 2400 x 1200 mm, and they only weigh 1kg. This makes them very easy to transport and distribute across the roof. The Riefa organic fibre roof-growing medium is made and produced in a demonstrably sustainable way, it is the light, fits neatly into place, its low depth profile doing away with the need for expensive alterations to parapets. Easily installed over tired or redundant roof covers, a simple rubber membrane overlay eliminates the need for expensive removal and removes the need for the disposal of hazardous oil-based systems. Contractors do not need specialist skills to install the Riefa system. It fits seamlessly onto sloping, pitched or shaped roofs of all kinds. Green Roof Waterproofing Is A Walk In The Parkside For Kemper Kemper System, has helped ensure Telford Homes’ Parkside Quarter development reflects the greenery of its location on the Isle of Dogs by providing the waterproofing membrane for the scheme’s green roofs. Designed by David Wood Architects, the Parkside Quarter development includes a five-story block with 64 apartments for sale, a further 17 apartments in a four-storey block for let by EastendHomes housing association and five apartments in a four-storey block for shared-ownership. Green roofs have been specified for all three blocks, connecting the buildings to the acres of park land that lie adjacent to the scheme. Roofing contractor, Cawston Roofing, used Kemper System’s cold liquid-applied Kemperol V210 waterproofing membrane to waterproof the concrete deck and provide an ideal base for the inverted roof insulation and green roof elements of the project. Kemper System’s EP primer was used to seal the concrete substrate and provide the ideal key for the liquid waterproofing membrane to bond to. Once cured, the installation team then applied the Kemperol V210 resin to the primed substrate, completing the roofs one section at a time. The Kemperol V210 resin saturates a polyester reinforcement fleece and cures to form a tough and durable, monolithic, seamless membrane with no laminations. It remains permanently flexible to cope with building movement; has a BBA certified service life in excess of 25 years and is completely root resistant. Insulation was installed directly on top of the Kemperol V210 membrane followed by a 25ml deep attenuation layer, which enables rainwater to be stored to irrigate the green roof planting while allowing any excess water to drain off the roof. Sustainable Restoration Respects The Architectural Heritage Of The Turin-Ceres Railway Line In Italy, the Turin Transport Group (GTT) has undertaken an important renovation project, in conjunction with the infrastructure management body Infratrasporti. To, to restore several railway buildings within the province of Turin. This sensitive project involved the removal of asbestos fibre cement roofing in six regional stations. The recently completed project substituted the original roof structures with sustainable solutions offering superior energy efficiency, including DuPont™ Tyvek®, an advanced breather membrane that is unique in the market due to its high-quality single layer construction. To, was responsible for preserving the historic, aesthetic and architectural value of the buildings, while assuring a sustainable and energy efficient renovation. Initially the refit involved only the elimination of the asbestos elements, but the architect ultimately decided on a more radical intervention to the entire roof systems.

Furthermore, the membrane is extremely resistant to damage, thus protecting the structure both during the construction phase and optimising energy performance for the long term. DuPont™ Tyvek® is consists primarily of high density polyethylene (HDPE) polymer without the use of plasticizers or restricted chemicals as listed in European Directives, therefore making no hazardous emissions. Its application to the station buildings of the Torino-Ceres railway line is fully aligned with the key objectives of sustainability, low environmental impact, and respect for the architectural heritage guiding the entire project. To preserve the architectural characteristics of the buildings, the restoration included the repair of original decorative timber elements and paneling, as well as the replacement of obsolete roof tiles with aesthetically identical alternatives made from asbestos-free, ecologically sound materials. Such measures contributed to full approval from the regional governing bodies that regulate the preservation of heritage environments.

Huge investment in rail infrastructure and station upgrades generates significant noise levels both from the construction works and day to day operations. Noise Mitigation: Acoustically, windows are often the weakest point in a building with most single glazed windows reducing noise by just 25-30dB - less if they are ill fitting. Even modern double glazed windows only achieve 30-35dB. Set against potential external noise levels of 70-80dB, significant additional insulation is required to meet best practice guidelines from the World Health Organisation of 30dB for bedrooms or living rooms and 35dB for meeting rooms. Secondary Glazing offers a very practical solution. A fully independent tailor made window system is set 100mm or more from the existing window and the sizeable air gap decouples the two panes of glass to reduce resonance. High performance frame seals will limit airborne sound. Noise reduction in the range 40-45dB is achievable using standard glazing materials and up to 50dB with heavier acoustic laminates. Selectaglaze has recently cooperated with English Heritage on a programme of research including the Bolsover Test House where a secondary window glazed with Pilkington’s Spacia sealed units recorded a centre of pane U-value of 0.8. The use of this technology, in conjunction with air tightness measures and mechanical ventilation using heat recovery, could allow a refurbished listed building to get close to EnerPHit standards. Window Styles: Secondary glazing is available in a wide range of styles including horizontal sliding, balanced vertical sliding, hinged and fixed. Located in the historic Eyre Square, the focal point of Galway, is Dunnes Stores. The Georgian facade of the building required extensive repair and refurbishment to the render which was suffering with a high degree of cracking. Repairs to the render were carried out using Betofix RM. This advanced cementitious repair mortar is designed to be easy to use and fast curing, which allows it to be applied and built up in several layers within a short period of time prior to application of the coating system. Lanes On Board With Sewer Relining Expertise For Tram Route Lanes Group has been commissioned to reline sewer pipes along the route of a tramline being constructed in Nottingham. Wilo Keeps Water At Bay From Underground Stations For many years, Wilo UK has been supplying submersible pumps to customers across Europe. Network Rail has a number of stations that are underground and below the level of rivers that flow close to the rail tracks. To keep them safe and operational, a constant flow of water is required to be pumped away from the stations and away from tracks. Mersey Rail in the north west is one such application. Sika played an important role in the construction of a carbon neutral subterranean eco dwelling in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Northumberland. This ambitious project was the brainchild of a retired couple who embarked on an adventure to build a ‘Green House’ in the garden of their existing home. Sika Concrete Repair System Specified For Forth Road Bridge For a structure which was built using 39,000 tonnes of steel, 125,000 cubic metres of concrete and has a main span of 1006 metres, the Forth Road Bridge is a feat of engineering. But with 65,000 vehicles using it every day and traffic loading significantly higher than expected by engineers who designed the structure in the 1950’s, it was time to replace the bridge bearings and repair the bridge piers on the approach viaducts. Appointed by main contractor Balfour Beatty to bring the structure up to 21st century specifications, specialist contractor Freyssinet Makers turned to Sika for a long term, reliable and industry-proven concrete repair solution. Spanning the Firth of Forth in Scotland, the £13.6m project for the Forth Estuary Transport Authority involved the replacement and refurbishment of the steel bearings on the north and south approach viaducts of the bridge, together with associated concrete repairs to the approach piers and strengthening to the steel box superstructure. “The steel bearings sit on top of the approach viaducts and allow the deck to move and accommodate changes in temperature and traffic load,” commented Graham Stanford, Business Manager for Freyssinet Structural Repairs and CCSL Ltd. “During inspections and monitoring, the existing bearings were exhibiting little or no movement but were showing varying amounts of corrosion. Consequently the surrounding concrete and grout was beginning to show considerable wear and tear.” Prior to the replacement of the bearings, action was required to repair the concrete pier tops with Sika’s unrivalled range of high performance repair mortars once again proving ideal to re-strengthen the approach viaduct piers and protect this iconic bridge for many years to come. Approached early in the design process, Sika worked closely with the consulting engineers Atkins and main contractor Balfour Beatty to advise material selection and properties required for a performance-based specification. Significant structures in their own right, the two approach viaducts at 252 metres and 438 metres on the north and south sides respectively, required around 100

tonnes of concrete repair products with Sika’s Armocrete, a cementitious free flowing micro-concrete repair system, used for all pier repairs and Sika Amorex L2 High Flow, a rapid strength grout used under the large bridge bearing plates. “Extensive flow trials were carried out on a specific test rig set up by Balfour Beatty and Atkins to prove the flowability and strength of these products,” commented Ronnie Turner of Sika. “Once testing was done Atkins signed off the specification and both were poured under gravity and allowed to cure while the bridge was still live and being used.” The fact that the concrete piers were adjacent to the communities either side also meant that the works had to be completed with minimal disruption and containment to keep dust down. Hydro-demolition was used to remove deteriorated concrete in the pier head, leaving a perfect bonding surface for the concrete repair material.
