THE INSIDE LINE

STAYINGDATE You may have heard the term “Out of sight, out of mind.” This is particularly true when it comes to racing. Drivers that are pursuing a career in motorsports need to be in the face of team owners, potential sponsors, and anyone and everyone involved in motorsports. It may be that the driver is not actually competing at an event, but simply being there and talking to people makes a world of difference. An important aspect to also remember is you never know who you are talking to. Case in point was when I was pursuing a career in racing. Back in the 90’s I was at the Long Beach Grand Prix working for a Toyota Atlantic team (as they were called back then) and this was my first race with the team so I did not know anyone. I ended up talking to a lady and we had a friendly but short conversation. I really did not try to talk to her longer because I kept thinking to myself, “Who is this woman? She is wasting my time.” Come to find out later she was Peggy Haas the owner of the championship winning Lynx Atlantic team and the heir to the Levi Strauss Empire. Patricio Jourdain goes into more detail in this month’s issue about the act of being present and in front of people. A must read for driver’s wanting to pursue motorsports for a living. Kory (our “Mom at the Track”) touches on the sport of karting and motorsports as a whole as well. If you are a racing fan and follow the news on NASCAR and IndyCar, even Formula 1, you may have read about the declining numbers in television viewership and race attendance. The way we keep motorsports from disappearing into oblivion is to start at the ground level. This means karting. Kory touches on this fact and what she deals with on a consistent basis. Bottom line is we need to expose karting to the general public to attract them into the sport. How we do this is an entirely different subject. This brings us to Tom Kutsher, the owner of SKUSA and ProKart. GoRacing Magazine had an exclusive interview with Tom at the recent Lake Elsinore event in California. Tom was gracious enough to give us his time and opened up about many issues. Interesting read and highly recommended. 6

We also had our first product test of a new data acquisition system called RaceCloud. With Tyler Brooks driving is Kosmic Rotax we were able to run RaceCloud through its paces. I can tell you we were both highly impressed with this system. RaceCloud includes telemetry where your tuner can watch what the driver is doing on the track in real time. Read about it starting on page 40. In the coming issues you will see an interview with Phil Giebler, write ups from Sabre’ Cook as she talks about her international experience of traveling and racing in the European CIK-FIA KZ2 Super Cup event in Sarno, Italy, SKUSA Super Nationals, and about our travels to the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Spain.

FROM THE

PADDOCK “Dear GoRacing Magazine, I just wanted to thank you for a great experience with your magazine. I began my first time subscription over the summer, and ended up being the winner of the camera! After submitting a picture of myself in my newly purchased cart with my new camera, I was a little disappointed the picture wasn’t featured in your next issue, although my name was. My home track was looking forward to the picture since I had it taken in front of their banner, and I was looking forward to bragging rights! I decided to send you an email asking if it would be possible to run the picture in your next issue fully understanding it likely wouldn’t happen as I’m sure your layouts are planned well in advance. Imagine my shock and thrill when I received my magazine yesterday and there it was, my picture, larger than I could have imagined! You guys made my day, and I’m sure my home track will be glad to hand out many copies as well! Keep up the good work!” – David L Davis, Royal Palm Beach, FL via email

We caught this driver “with his pants down” reading the September issue of GoRacing Magazine. Can you guess who it is?

Indy Tests PARKER KLIGERMAN TO TEST AT IMS FOR SCHMIDT PETERSON MOTORSPORTS Parker Kligerman announced today that he will drive an Indy Lights car for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports during the Mazda Road to Indy “Chris Griffis Memorial Test” at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Mazda Road to Indy (MRTI) is one of the most successful driver development programs in the world, providing a unique, scholarship-funded path to reach the Verizon IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500. Kligerman is no stranger to the world of open-wheel racing. At 15 years old, he proved his prowess by winning all three of the races he entered at the prestigious Skip Barber Racing Series. In 2006, the Westport, Connecticut native won 11 of 14 races and earned the Formula TR Pro Series 1600 title. He then had a successful stint in USAC midget racing before eventually racing stock cars. When Kligerman’s 2014 race team ceased operation early in the season, the 24-year-old, NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie was undeterred. He spent the last few months focusing on the growth of his company, Nootelligence, in addition to joining the NBC Sports anchor team as an analyst and hosting a weekly podcast. Following the success that Kligerman has achieved so far in a variety of motorsports disciplines, the Indy Lights test will allow him to use his open-wheel racing experience to explore new opportunities for the next phase of his racing career. “Ever since I drove a go-kart for the first time, my quest was to advance to the top levels of open-wheel racing,” said Kligerman. “After winning an open-wheel championship in 2006, I found myself on a different path; driving stock cars. spent five years in the top three NASCAR divisions, but unfortunate circumstances rerouted my path earlier this year. “I’ve always looked for opportunities that can further my career, so I want to thank Sam [Schmidt] and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports for this opportunity in Indy Lights to test an open-wheel car for the first time in eight years. Although it will be a challenge, I’m looking forward to having fun and working with a championship-caliber, open-wheel team.” Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team owner Sam Schmidt commented, “We have watched the exodus of many drivers from IndyCar to NASCAR over the years... Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Danica Patrick, the list goes on. Kurt Busch competing in the Indy 500 this year was awesome and I believe he showed the world what is possible.” “I have watched Parker ascend the NASCAR ranks over the years where he has shown speed and maturity, both qualities at the top of our list when evaluating new drivers.” “In this test, we will be looking for how Parker adapts to the much lighter and less horsepower characteristics of the Indy Lights car, as well as how quickly he learns road course techniques. Given that the change in equipment and type of circuit are so radical, we don’t have huge expectations for a really fast time. What we will be looking for is how well he listens and if there is the potential for him to be successful in open wheel going forward. We are very excited to see what happens.”

Tour Details FLORIDA WINTER TOUR CLASS STRUCTURE, DATES AND LOCATIONS ANNOUNCED Words: MAXSpeed Group After the recent announcement of the acquisition of the Formula Kart Productions Florida Winter Tour (FWT), the MAXSpeed Group is pleased to announce the dates and locations for the 2015 edition of the popular and competitive series as well as some big changes to the Formula Kart weekend class structure. The upcoming season will feature the back-to-back weekends, making stops at beloved FWT tracks Homestead Karting, Orlando Kart Center and Ocala Gran Prix. Big changes will come on the first weekend of the double weekend format as MAXSpeed Entertainment will take over the Rok Cup USA program and offer only Rok Classes on the Formula Kart weekend. “MAXSpeed Entertainment is proud to lock down three solid facilities for the 2015 FWT program,” explains Garett Potter, MAXSpeed Group’s newly appointed Director of Race Promotion. “These three locations have been staples in the FWT program in previous years and we are excited to continue to work with the track owners and operators to help elevate the playing field. We have also made some major changes to the class structure on the Formula Kart weekend to try and improve on Bill Wright’s efforts to grow the program by removing the TaG platform divisions and adding Rok Cup USA classes.” Potter continued, “The team at MAXSpeed have worked diligently to put together the best program possible for the karters. Combining forces to work with OTK Srl. and the Rok Cup program, we feel that we have the best platform in place to offer the competitors and teams of the 2015 Florida Winter Tour.” Kicking off the 2015 Florida Winter Tour down south, karters will travel to the Homestead Karting facility for the opening rounds of the program before making the trek back north throughout Florida. Homestead Karting is just 45 minutes south of the exciting city of Miami and always provides a great racing environment. The track design may be simple but has deep braking zones and provides some excellent wheel-to-wheel racing. The second stop of the tour will take place at the popular Orlando Kart Center (OKC) in Orlando, Florida. OKC has seen improvements week in and week out to their facility and is now one of the most spectator friendly tracks that the United States has to offer. Located only minutes from downtown Orlando and Disney World, OKC is

a family friendly track. With a fast and technical layout OKC will allow divers to showcase their abilities and kart setup, as the series passes the halfway mark. Last but not least on the Florida Winter Tour calendar will make a return visit to the picturesque Ocala Gran Prix. As a strong supporter of the Florida Winter Tour for numerous seasons, the staple facility will once again return to the calendar as Jorge Arellano and his crew always put on a great show. Mixing it up for 2015, the Florida Winter Tour will swap the track direction while still utilizing the existing layout as competitors will now race counter clockwise for the third and final event weekends. Potter added, “After our acquisition of the FWT, our goal is to take this program and breathe new life into it, with the solid team MAXSpeed has put together over the past few years. We plan to work with and support our partners to make this the best program in the country.” With the support of several companies within the karting industry, MAXSpeed Entertainment will have an event kick-off gathering for all teams and competitors each and every race weekend. Taking place on the Friday evening at the conclusion of the day’s on track activities, MAXSpeed Entertainment will host a ‘Team and Competitor Social Hour’ with food and drinks for all as thank you for participation in the Florida Winter Tour. Summer Success CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN AND PODIUM FINSIHES AT CALIFORNIA PROKART CHALLENGE FOR CRG USA DRIVERS Words | Photos: ProMedia Motorsports PR The CRG-USA operation continued its support of CRG drivers through August and into September, still achieving top results with every event. The growing race team closed out the 2014 Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge with three championships in the Stock Moto categories to end the month of August, and began September with podium results and top-five performances at the recent California ProKart Challenge event. Over the August 29-31 weekend, the Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge held its final two rounds of 2014 at the Grand Junction Motor Speedway in western Colorado. S1 Pro Stock Moto driver Sabré Cook wrapped up the series Championship, while Lindsey Brewer used her double win weekend to advance to the top of the standings, earning her first series championship, Rob Vanderen sat out the final round as he already had the S4 championship locked up with two rounds to go. All drivers were aboard their SwedeTech powered Stock Moto CRG packages. The following weekend, the CRG-USA hauler traveled to Lake Elsinore, California for the first time, as the California ProKart Challenge held its first-ever event outside the Lake Elsinore Diamond Stadium. The temporary circuit was a replica of the SKUSA SuperNationals XVIII layout, giving the CRG-USA drivers a great baseline for the upcoming November spectacular. Darren Elliott led the squad with a clean sweep of the S4 Master Stock Moto division. With support from CRG-USA and MRC, Elliott was at the front of the field in every on-track session for his fourth feature win of the series. Robert Marks posted his best result in his third start of the series this year. Marks was a solid fourth place finisher, while Juan Garcia and Victor Jimenez finished close behind in sixth and seventh to give CRG-USA four drivers within the top-10. Darrell Tunnell came up just short, placing 11th in his fourth start this year. Two CRG-USA drivers landed on the podium in the competitive S1 Pro Stock Moto division. SwedeTech powered Sabré Cook and Jimmy McNeil ran in the top-five all day. In the second heat race, the duo moved into second and third, holding the positions through the 20-lap main event. Cook scored the runner-up result in her first series start of the year while McNeil, a winner at Round One, stood on the podium for a second time in four starts with a third place result. S2 driver Lindsay Brewer made her first 14

series start, gaining some valuable experience for the upcoming SuperNationals, finishing ninth. SKUSA Pro Tour championship leader TaG Master driver Billy Cleavelin struggled early, but improved his pace throughout the day until contact in the main event took him out of contention. Expect Billy to be up front at the Streets of Lancaster and the SuperNationals, where he is a former winner of both events. CRG-USA will return to California once again in just two weeks, in support of CRG drivers at the California ProKart Challenge finale, the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix on September 2628. CRG-USA is primed with great opportunities for drivers to be part of the growing race team or businesses looking to promote the world-championship CRG brand as part of the dealer network. CRG-USA is an official race team for SwedeTech Racing Engines, AiM Sports, and Sniper. Anyone interested in joining the team should contact Stacey Cook at 855.TEAMCRG or via email stacey@crg-usa.com. Forward Thinking MAX AND JOS CATCH UP WITH THE VERSTAPPEN INFO PAGE Words | Photos: Stefan Meens A week after joining the Red Bull Junior Team on August 12, it was announced that Max Verstappen will drive the 2015 Formula 1 season for Scuderia Toro Rosso, Infiniti Red Bull’s sister team. Needless to say, Verstappen junior’s life has been turned upside down. Both Max and his father Jos chatted to the Verstappen Info Page revealing how they experienced the last weeks and what is in store for Max’ in the foreseeable future. Max kicks off the interview: “It’s been a busy couple of weeks. I’ve been traveling a lot and I’m constantly on the move. The media attention is huge and I’m often interviewed. I guess it’s part of it. Formula 1 has always been my dream so it doesn’t bother me at all.” In the wake of becoming a Scuderia Toro Rosso driver, both praise and criticism have been uttered in response to Max’ promotion. “If you’re announced as the youngest ever F1 driver, I guess criticism is to be expected, so I prepared myself for it. To be honest, I don’t care as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We’ll see what happens next year.” So far, Max is delighted with his new team and the Dutchman is looking forward to his rookie season. “Toro Rosso has battled for points in the last few years so I’ll try score as many points as I can”, says the youngest ever driver. “During the Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps I’ve been with the team all weekend. They received me really well and the Toro Rosso folks are all very nice. It’s important that a team want do everything they can to prepare you and have confidence in you as a driver. That’s been the case at Toro Rosso and I’m looking forward to give it my all next year.” The last couple of months proved to be very intense and busy. With the next F1 season starting in March 2015, the next six months will be pretty hectic as well. Father and mentor Jos explains: “Max knows what he has to do ahead of the new season and the strategy is for him to focus on the racing. We’ll help him deal with all the stuff off track which is important, especially if you’ve seen the amount of media attention during the Grand Prix at Spa. Therefore, we’ll switch to a quieter media profile in the wake of the VKV City Racing event, so Max can focus on the tasks set out for him. He’ll have to prepare physically, spend time in the simulator, do track tests, obtain a super license, get a seat fitted etc.” For the foreseeable Formula 1 related future, the plans are still GO Racing Magazine

open. Jos: “First of all, we’ll have Max drive a one-year old car. After that we’ll plan other activities, such as Friday practice. It’s not sure if he’ll participate in them; that’s a decision we’ll leave to the team.” Formula 1 cars are physically tough due to the high g-forces generated. Nevertheless, Jos is confident Max will be ready. “The steering in an F1 car isn’t that heavy or tough. It’s mainly his neck muscles that need to be trained. But with six months to the first race, he’ll be physically ready.” Jos will be present at all the race weekends and meetings. During them, father and son will make decisions together. Verstappen senior is therefore confident Max is ready for F1. “If you know him personally and see what he’s done in such a short career, it’s apparent he’s ready but he has to take this chance and get plenty of mileage under his belt. In terms of driving and dealing with the press, I think he is up to it.” When he lines up on the Australian Grand Prix grid in March 2015, Max will be seventeen years old. Most of his peers will be at school. The Dutchman might not be in the classroom but there is no escaping from school. “I’ve still got a year to go and I’m being taught via online lessons. They’re every Tuesday and so far it’s going well and it’s important to me to finish secondary school”, concludes Max. GO

World Champs AT THE WORLD CIK-FIA KF & KFJ CHAMPS IN ANUNAY-LES-BOIS (F) THE NEW CHAMPIONS ARE NORRIS (GB-FA KART-VORTEX KF) AND AHMED (GB-FA KART-VORTEX KFJ Words | Photos: press@wskarting.com The new World Champions in Aunay Les Bois. The big day for Lando Norris and Enaam Ahmed has finally arrived: they are the new World Champions of kart racing and their names are now on the list of winners of CIK-FIA titles. On the French circuit of Aunay-les-Bois, in Basse-Normandie, the two Brits brought two more world titles under the Union Jack flag, after the victory of Ahmed himself and of his fellow countryman Callum Ilott (KF) in the CIK-FIA European Championship in their categories. Today’s races were disturbed by the rain, which was expected on the previous days but had never arrived. Frequent showers made the asphalt wet today, obliging teams to operate sudden tyre changes. In this difficult scenario, the skills of the two Champions and of all the drivers who took part in the battle for the top positions emerged and allowed fans to enjoy a great racing show even through the Internet, through the live streaming available on www.cikfiachampionship.com and www.cikfia.tv. Lando Norris grabs the World Title. There was Lando Norris (FA Kart-Vortex-Dunlop) on the highest step of the podium of Aunay-les-Bois. It was a result which almost surprised the paddock, because Norris was always among the best drivers throughout the weekend, but never at the top. On the contrary, especially during the initial phase of the event, the best performance was achieved by the Danish Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic-Vortex-Dunlop). Norris was second after the qualifying heats, and he kept the position also in the Prefinal, this time behind his fellow countryman Tom Joyner (Zanardi-Parilla-Dunlop). The Final, too, seemed favourable to another protagonist: the Indian Jehan Daruvala (FA Kart-Vortex-Dunlop). Thanks to a great start from the third row, Daruvala led the race for a long time, until Norris decided to lay his card on the table and, from the second position he had occupied since the beginning of the race, attacked and overtook Daruvala. Norris outpaced the rest of the pack and didn’t leave any

possibility to his rivals. The battle continued for the other top positions, with a last surprise which took place on the last lap, when the Russian Nikita Mazepin (Tony Kart-Vortex-Dunlop) grabbed the second place overtaking Daruvala. Superb fourth place for Calum Ilott, who beat in fifth position the Dutch Martijn van Leeuwen (both on Zanardi-Parilla-Dunlop) during the last laps, after an outstanding recovery started form the 16th row of the grid. Enaam Ahmed wins the race to the KFJ crown. The perfect weekend for Enaam Ahmed (FA Kart-Vortex-Vega): he is the new World Champion after being on top of the KFJ throughout the weekend, from qualifying until the end. The Londoner had several opponents: the first one was the German Mick Junior (Tony KartVortex-Vega), who was beaten only by Ahmed in the series of heats he took part in. Ahmed, this morning, won Prefinal 1 with a remarkable lead over the Russian Sergey Travnikov (DR-TMVega), while in Prefinal 2, characterized by frequent showers, the English Daniel Ticktum (Zanardi-Parilla-Vega) won beating the Belgian Benjamin Lessennes (Kosmic-Parilla-Vega) and becoming the most dangerous rival for Ahmed. Unfortunately, Ticktum did not have a lucky first lap at the start of the Final and dropped back to the last positions. Lessennes grabbed the second position but was obliged to pull over at half race because of an issue with his spark plug. Mick Junior, who had to close the gap after the fourth place achieved in the Prefinal, found himself in second position, even though he didn’t stand any chance to reach Ahemd. Also the Venezuelan Mauricio Baiz (Kosmic-Parilla-Vega) took advantage of the situation and scored the third position after an outstanding recovery which started from the 14th row and after a rather troublesome weekend. Behind the Indian Kush Maini (Exprit-Vortex-Vega), 4th, and the Swedish Anton Haaga (KosmicLKE-Vega), 5th, the sixth place was eventually scored by Ticktum.

Baker’s Dozen TWELVE FINALSITS ANNOUNCED FOR MAZDA ROAD TO INDY USF2000 TEST Words: MAXSpeed Group The Mazda Road to Indy added another rung to its already impressive ladder following an announcement in late June that Andersen Promotions and the Mazda Road to Indy had formed an alliance with the MAXSpeed Group and the United States Rotax Max Challenge program. Less than three months after the initial announcement, the partnership today unveiled the twelve finalists into the Mazda Road to Indy and MAXSpeed Group Driver Advancement Program who will vie for an opportunity to test in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda. “We are very pleased to have such a strong partnership with GO Racing Magazine

Andersen Promotions and the Mazda Road to Indy,” expressed Richard Boisclair, President of the MAXSpeed Group. “Together we are taking Rotaxians up the ladder and trying to help them fulfill their dreams of competing in the open-wheel motorsports world. The twelve finalists into this first-ever program are well-deserved and will represent Rotax, karting and the Mazda Road to Indy program very well.” Following the completion of a Driver Advancement Program application, the candidates were narrowed down to a group of 12 based on selection criteria. The competitors who have been chosen will now enter a final interview process with Verizon IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe, Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires champion Gabby Chaves, US karting legend Alan Rudolph, and three-time Rotax Grand Finals champion and four-time Euro MAX champion Ben Cooper who will select the four winners. The candidates are Oliver Askew, 17, of Tequesta, Fla.; Christian Brooks, 14, of Santa Clarita, Calif.; Sabre Cook, 19, of Grand Junction, Colo.; Jake Craig, 14, of Mission Viejo, Calif.; Trenton Estep, 14, of San Antonio, Texas; Kyle Kirkwood, 15, of Jupiter, Fla.; Michael McCarthy, 15, of Clearwater, Fla.; Christian Munoz, 15, of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; Ryan Norberg, 15, of Orlando, Fla.; Enzo Prevost, 15, of Novato, Calif.; Gavin Reichelt, 15, of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; and Austin Versteeg, 15, of Sandy, Utah. “We are excited to enter the interview process to select the winners of our inaugural program with the MAXSpeed Group and introduce these talented up-and-coming karters to USF2000,” said Michelle Kish, COO of Andersen Promotions. “It was difficult enough to narrow the initial field down to 12, so I don’t envy our judges in selecting the final four.” The video conference interview process will begin immediately with all interviews being completed by September 29, 2014. The winners will be announced on Monday, October 13, just prior to the annual Rotax Pan American Challenge in Mooresville, N.C. From there, the four winners will take part in a USF2000 test under the watchful eye of Andersen Promotions and members of the Mazda Road to Indy staff. “We would like to thank all of the competitors who submitted their resumes for the Driver Advancement Program, and congratulate those selected for interviews,” added Boisclair.

Red Carpet YOUNG CAMBRAN RACER TO GET RED CARPET TREATMENT Words: Ian McDuff Despite being in his first year of competitive motorsport, 6 year old kart racer Caleb McDuff, from Cambran, has been nominated for not one, but two prestigious awards for sporting achievement. Caleb is profoundly deaf and his ambition is to become the world’s first deaf Grand Prix driver. This year has seen Caleb and father Ian travelling all across the UK to compete in the Bambino Kart Championship. Despite his inexperience and competing against drivers a couple of years older than him, Caleb has shown remarkable commitment and determination as he has consistently recorded quicker times around the challenging circuits that make up the Tour. Now his efforts have been recognised with the young racer being nominated firstly for Young Player of the Year at the Deaf Sports Personality of the Year Awards which will be presented at a special ceremony at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on Saturday November 29th. Soon after finding out about this nomination, Caleb also learnt that he had been nominated for a Young Guns Award by web based motorsport radio station, Downforce UK Radio. Speaking about the nominations, Ian said “Caleb is over the moon with the news and I am really pleased and proud of him because I know how hard he has worked this season to get so far. We also have to thank everyone who has supported Caleb to enable him to get to this point.” Before he does the rounds of the award ceremonies, however, Caleb still has the matter of completing his racing season to concentrate on. The penultimate round of the Bambino series takes place at the Bayford Meadows circuit in Kent on September 28/29 while for dad, Ian, there is also the prospect of the 2015 season to think about. “It can be a bit like a treadmill”, he explains, “Although there are still two rounds of this year’s championship to go I am already busy talking to potential sponsors about next year. This year has been a learning year for both Caleb and me and we want to kick on from that in 2015. The key thing is that Caleb has fun doing what he is doing but at the same time I want to give him the best opportunity he can have to be successful.” You can contact Ian for more information about Caleb and the team, Silence Racing by e-mailing Ian.mcduff@frenchautosolutions.net.

Back In It SMKA BACK IN ACTION Words: Carrie Skaufel There is nothing like the smell of kart engine exhaust on a cool coastal foggy morning. The friendly members and families of the Santa Maria Karting Association (SMKA) are spoiled by the mild climate and great racing in the Santa Maria Valley. In contrast to the many kart tracks that have closed over the past decade, the Santa Maria Karting Association has overcome many challenges to keep its renowned kart track open and is now seeing a positive trend in membership growth.

benefit of open access to track anytime they like (except during scheduled events). This enables members the freedom to enjoy the track anytime their schedule allows. SMKA hosts monthly club races, along with regular open practice days for non-members and rental karts for new potential karters to try. SMKA has hosted numerous regional and national level events during their long history. Within the last couple years, organizations such as the Vintage Kart Club of America and M1GP have found the SMKA track to be popular with their racers and have added it to their schedules.

SMKA, a non-profit organization, was established in 1959 and is one of the oldest continuously operated karting clubs in the United States. SMKA’s current track is located on property of the Santa Maria Public Airport. Due to FAA regulations at the time, SMKA’s track was closed for nearly two years (20112012). With the assistance of the Santa Maria Airport and a local congresswoman, SMKA was able to secure a long-term lease and is working hard to build the sport of karting on the Central Coast.

In addition, the PRD Pan American Crown of Racing will be held at the Santa Maria kart track July 3rd – 5th 2015. This event is expected to attract top karters from many countries to compete for their part of the $20,000+ in cash and prizes. Santa Maria and the surrounding areas are very popular during the July 4th holiday due to the great weather and numerous activities the area has to offer. Racers and their families will be able to combine a “mini vacation” and a top level karting event into one. SMKA will be hosting a free practice day for all PRD enthusiasts on October 11th 2014 (9:00 AM – 4:00PM). The free practice is open to all PRD, Comer 80, Honda Kid Kart and Mini Rok competitors. A $10 pit pass fee applies for all drivers and non-drivers. Free camping is available on October 11th.

The 7/10 mile Santa Maria kart track can be configured into 15 different challenging courses. SMKA members have the

CARS

Getting places with hard work and determination Words | Photos: Patricio Jourdain To be part of racing, you have to be involved in racing! So, how many times are young race drivers sitting in the couch waiting for an F1 team to call and hire them? This happens often, right? Most likely nobody is getting that phone call, so drivers have to make sure they are doing all that it takes to be around racing and to be

involved in the world of motorsports. By saying this I mean that the more a driver is involved in the sport, the more opportunities will become available to have a career as a race car driver or at least find a job in the industry. So guys, get off the couch and start pursuing your dream, attend as many races

and events as you can during the season, and not only show up, but get ready to mingle with everyone there. Remember, you never know who will be your next boss or your next sponsor. Make sure people remember your name, who you are, and what you are looking for, this way when an opportunity comes about, those you met in the past will know you are out there and something might come up for you. The activity and your results on track are very important for you to find a ride, but it isn’t always the most essential part of racing. Never forget about your actions off the track: your personality, education, and principals. These might take you further than you think. Race teams now-a-days are not only looking for drivers that are fast and can win races, but they are looking for drivers that they can market to their sponsors so that a partnership may be as successful and profitable as possible. When you are around racing, there are multiple things that you can do and be involved in while you are not in the race car. Make sure you get involved in as many of these as you can. This can be from working on the cars or karts, helping a team with their marketing, or even helping out at your local track as a flag marshal. All of these activities will prepare you and aid your future in the sport. Whether you have the luck to be a pro driver, or are involved in some other activity around motor racing, at the end of the day all of these efforts will pay off eventually. These efforts will require a lot of sacrifice, especially if you are in your younger years. For example, if you are a teenager, you will probably have to spend more time at the track than you would with your friends. You may even have to travel and be away from home while looking for your dream. You may have to spend your savings on a plane ticket to go to a race that you might not even be part of, instead of spending it on a trip with friends. Although after all of this is said, do not forget that a balanced and steady life is very much needed, so make smart choices and work hard to get where you want to go.

MOM

MOM at the

TRACK A Mother’s Perspective Words: Kory Zimmermann All kids dream about what they might be when they grow up; a doctor, maybe an astronaut, a dancer or professional football player. Some dream about becoming a race car driver! If you walk thru the busy paddock on a race weekend and ask any of the cadet drivers “what do you want to do when you grow up?” a majority of them will respond with an enthusiastic, “I want to race cars!” Most likely that is the reason they are at the track in the first place, right? As parents we want to provide our children with the access, tools and opportunity to make those dreams a reality. I know there are many kids out there with dreams of becoming a race car driver but have never even had an opportunity to get started in the sport, heck I know adults that wanted to be a professional race car driver; they (or their parents) just never knew where to start. How are we, as a sport, introducing kids to karting and racing? All other forms of sports are common in households and schools whether it be soccer, football, baseball, basketball. The sports just mentioned are also all played in schools or thru community organizations. Now believe me, I understand kids can’t “play” go-karting at recess like other traditional sports. But I have seen first-hand the kids on the tricycles, creating a “track” and “racing” on the black top, mimicking their favorite driver. In the spring and fall I see the banners go up around our town, letting everyone know that it’s time for little-league, softball or popwarner football sign-ups. There are a lot of missed opportunities to bring new drivers to the sport of karting, many people keep it amongst themselves as if karting is some secret society. When I think about these things, I start to wonder. Is this why the sport is so expensive, people are so bent on keeping it to themselves that they are ruining the sport for everyone else? If

24

GO

you only have a handful of people show up for an event, (the event itself a relatively fixed cost) could the cost to participate be reduced when more people show up? If manufacturers only sell a relatively low number of chassis’ or motors each year, the cost is most likely more. Could they reduce costs if there was more demand for their product? Has the sport hurt itself to the point that it has made it almost cost prohibitive for a middle class family to afford to complete, the sad truth is yes. I read an article (it was actually included in the August issue of GoRacing Magazine) where Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton’s father said that if Lewis was getting into karting today, they would not be able to afford it. So how do we help this sport grow? Or I guess the question is do we even want the sport to grow here in the United States? Do we want the professional seats to go to the Europeans and other foreign drivers? I have a feeling sooner or later even NASCAR might start sourcing talent from Europe due to the lack of qualified American drivers. Where do we start? One thing I truly believe in is getting the sport of karting into the hands and minds of the general public. Personally, I know there are times when talking about extracurricular activities and sports with other parents and even some family members about the sport my son “plays” they look at me like I have three heads. Or they shake their head in agreement and say “oh he goes to that indoor karting place, I have heard those places are a lot of fun. My kids are always begging to go there!” I’ll admit I often times bite my tongue, force a smile and say, “no what he does is a bit different than that, he actually races a purpose built kart with a 125cc motor (like a motorcycle engine) and competes at different outdoor tracks here in Southern California against other kids in his category.” I will usually then show them a picture, because yes, I am a Mom and I will take any opportunity to brag about my kids. Sometimes they nod their head with that glazed look in their eyes. Other times a Dad will say, “that looks really cool, I used to ride motocross as a kid and I bet my son would totally dig driving something like that!” I explain to them like any sport, it is a financial commitment and time commitment but that time spent at the racetrack with your child, other families and competitors is priceless. There are people in the karting industry that (I believe) are dedicated to getting the sport in front of more people and growing the sport as a whole. As a racing community we need to continue to support that. I challenge each of you reading this magazine right now to share our sport with someone that you might not have otherwise shared it with. Maybe you know a Dad who is looking for a way to spend more time with his kids, or you hear about parents complaining about how much time their kids spend “glued” to their video games. Invite them out to the next event to help cheer on your child or you if you are the one racing, you might just have helped a new racer discover his dream!

TOM KUTSCHER OF SKUSA

AT THE PROKART CHALLENGE EVENT IN LAKE ELSINORE, CA GoRacing Magazine

I

n the world of American kart racing, Superkarts! USA is the outright leader in the shifterkart category and a dedicated supporter of TaG sprint competition, presenting both regional and national events that all lead up to the program’s crown jewel, the annual SuperNationals.

As a privately-owned karting organization that is steadily expanding its reach, SKUSA is certainly stretching out its Southern California headquarters. SKUSA is owned by Tom and Patti Kutscher, but got its start on the East Coast in the mid-1990s. Now in its 17th year of existence, SKUSA was started in 1994 by motorsports announcer Ken Getchell, who was a big fan of the high-powered shifter karts that were being introduced to the American motorsports community. GoRacing Magazine sat down with Tom to talk about the past, present and future of karting. GoRacing Magazine: Tom, thank you for

34

GO

sitting down with us today and taking some time out of your busy schedule here at the ProKart Challenge event at Lake Elsinore, tell us; how did the Lake Elsinore event come about? Tom Kutscher This event actually came about after brainstorming with Troy McCall at HPD. Troy uses this facility for drifting events and it was discussed at one point to showcase a motorsports weekend; of karting, drifting events, something cool and exciting to bring to the local community, but I was concerned with space. It might be a viable option in the future to provide an extreme motorsports weekend; highlighting karting, drifting, motorcycles and to get karting out to the general public. GRM: Rumor has it that the track layout is a replica of the SuperNationals XVIII track layout coming up in November. TK: That is not a rumor the track configuration this weekend is the same track layout that will be at the November SuperNationals event. GRM: Changing gears a bit, can you tell our readers a little bit about your background? Many know you as the face of SKUSA SuperKarts! USA and ProKart Challenge, but you yourself used to race, right? TK: Ya, I got involved in karting a little later in life. Growing up, we didn’t have the money to go karting. When I made my own money, I looked into offshore racing and even vintage auto racing but what really caught my eye was shifter karts, I was up at the old Amago track and drove a shifter kart and was hooked! I raced for a few years, opened Extreme Karting in Anaheim in the late 90’s because I wasn’t happy with the level of service available in the karting community at that time, and I sold Extreme Karting in 2005/2006 to focus on growing the sport. I am fortunate as a promoter that I know the karting business from the prospective of a driver, an importer, the retail side. Seeing and hearing what was missing in karting I hoped to be able (thru SKUSA SuperKarts! USA and ProKart) to help fill that need. Talking to drivers and having their support, and growing the karting community with focus on the shifter and TaG classes. GRM: What sets your series apart from others?

TK: When we first started out, we ran shifter classes, then the TaG classes were getting more popular, and it was all adults. We didn’t do hour and a half barbeques; that kind of stuff you can do away from the track at home. Our events are about racing; we start at 7:30AM and you can tell your wife you will be home at this time and more often than not we’ll have you out of here at that time. We don’t do lunch breaks, our day runs non-stop. What I want people to do at the end of the day, is have a great day with a lot of racing. By the time your day is over you might have logged over 70 laps. Many people don’t realize the per lap cost and that by running this format, it is a great value. Today we are running 8 classes and we run as many laps and give drivers the maximum racing. There is some competitive drivers and racing going on this level of karting isn’t for every karter. That is why I think it is fantastic that there is the club racing to choose from. There is definitely room for both; I don’t believe someone just getting started in karting should come to us first. They should race at the local/club level and hone their skills; when they are ready to advance to the next level they can come check out our events. GRM: SuperNats, how did that come about? It is probably one of the biggest karting events in the world. TK: It is the biggest karting event in the word! In fact we were sitting with some TV execs here yesterday and they were asking about it. The fact that they knew about it and flew out here wanting to know more about the event and how we have over 40 countries represented, along with top racing professionals (AJ Allmendinger, Will Power) calling to make sure they secure their spot, that is really exciting. With over 400 entries in the 1st twenty-four hours that registration went live, we are looking to field about 520 entries this year. Our operation is a pretty well-oiled machine. We employ approximately 90 people for the SuperNationals!, and rotate them in 3 shifts. We hand pick out staff, they aren’t the local riff-raff, 95% of our staff come back year after year. They fly in from different regions around the country and not only are they good at what they do, they love doing it. I am lucky to have the phenomenal staff that we do. SuperKarts! has been around GO Racing Magazine

for almost 25 years, I received a phone call asking if I wanted to buy it, I had started ProKart in 2005 and SuperKarts! USA needed new energy involved. The driver in me bought SuperKarts! USA, because I used to race SKUSA events and it was that passion and enthusiasm that I wanted to bring back. By no means was it easy, the first event in 2006, we forgot the track entry and exit; everyone on pre-grid looked at each other “how do we get on track” then once on track, “where do we exit”. Every single event is a tremendous amount of work and a lot of people don’t recognize that. It’s easy to sit behind a computer screen and bash an event or spew a bunch of negativity about something you know nothing about, or maybe you raced 15, 20 years ago and think you still know what is going on. The people that come to an event; participate, spectate or work an event know what it takes. My goal is to continue to bring the racing to the people so they can feel it, smell it, and experience it firsthand. If we continue to hide our sport in Perris, Riverside, Button Willow, Santa Rosa, etc. karting is going to die. Club racing basically steals driver “A” from one club to another club. It isn’t generating new blood, the general public isn’t flocking to GO Racing Magazine

club races to see what karting is all about; and that is why we run events like Lancaster, Modesto and this weekend Lake Elsinore. GRM: Is this the last year running the SuperNationals at the Rio? TK: It hasn’t been decided yet but the contract is up with the Rio this year. We are exploring other options, but one thing is for sure is that it will remain in Las Vegas. The SuperNationals event is the second largest customer for the Rio next to the World Poker Tournament. GRM: If you could create the “Perfect World” in karting what would it look like? TK: One thing I would like to make clear is that for me karting is a business, just because it might be a hobby for one person doesn’t mean it is my hobby. There is nothing wrong with selling a great product and being able to feed my family, isn’t that what we all want? The bonus in that is I love what I do, my family is involved right alongside me and we live and breathe karting 12 plus hours a day. To answer your question, I would love to see unity and consistency. Being able to throw your kart in the back of your pick up and maybe you are going to drive and visit

family in another state but while you are there, there is a race going on that weekend and you get in a race while you are there. The new cadet Honda motor is great for the sport; it is cost effective and low maintenance. Talking and working with clubs from entry level to professional levels and “weeds out” the bad apples. If a driver is going to misbehave at one club, they aren’t going to be welcome at another club and that will hopefully bring recognition to the driver that “hey I just got banned for 6 months, I can’t go to the SuperNationals”. This is a work in progress and will be a slow process but ultimately make the program simpler. GRM: What we have seen in the sport, from our parent company K1 Speed and sister company K1 RaceGear, is that there are people racing at the indoor centers and have success in the Racing Leagues, they want to get involved in outdoor karting and are overwhelmed with confusion. All of the different series, chassis’ and engine configurations. There doesn’t seem to be a clear, concise road map to hand to a new driver in the sport; often times that confusion turns them away. TK: Exactly, and you are right is it confusing GO

and we need to make it simple. A great place to start is at the club level. In Southern California LAKC is an excellent club to get involved with, Apex in Perris has a great program that really focuses on the kids and getting them and the parents up to speed. From there racers can move to ProKart and hone their skills even more. After a couple of years in ProKart, drivers can see where they measure up against other drivers in the country and join the ProTour, running with the best from around the United States and compete in the SuperNationals! If you podium at the SuperNationals! you are one badass driver. Another thing we need to do to help the sport and attract new drivers is control costs. An example might be mandating tire rules, making drivers run the same set of tires over a race weekend. Some drivers might complain that this slows them down, but it evens the playing field and lowers the overall race cost. If I can add one thing, it would be for the naysayers to come out to a race, come see what we are all about. Come out and see what karting is all about. There needs to be more positivity about the sport and even within the sport itself. Karting is a great family pastime, people come to the track in their trailer or motorhome, they’ve got the family dog with this and they have a great day of racing. Some of the kids that hit the track mean serious business. After their session, they go back to their trailer and are hi-fiving each other, playing around until their next session is called up. The corner workers, the people that are standing on track the whole day, give them a hi-five at the end of the day, thank them for what they do, because it is definitely a passion. If people continue to breed negativity, create confusion, increase costs, the sport will never grow. GO Racing Magazine

SPOTLIGHT DATA AQUISITION AS WE KNOW IT IS ABOUT TO CHANGE WITH THE NEW SYSTEM FROM RACECLOUD

is on the race track, in real time. K1 RaceGear, the North American importer of RaceCloud, was provided a prototype to test and learn the “ins and outs of this new system, before it is scheduled for release in early November 2014.

RaceCloud is the first data acquisition company to bring live telemetry to karting. So now, along with the race suits and helmets and the large transporters comes a system that your race engineer/ tuner/mechanic/relative, can monitor the many parameters while the driver

On a recent Sunday at the Apex Kart Track in Southern California, K1 RaceGear’s Tyler Brooks and Richard Zimmermann began the thorough testing of this exciting new product. Tyler, a well-qualified driver, who finished third at the Rotax Grand Nationals this past June, brought out his podium finishing kart to do the testing. Tyler along with his dad, Robert Brooks, were able to install the RaceCloud system in the same amount of time as the most widely used system on the market. With the entire system coming in at about 3 pounds, you are guaranteed not to add too much additional weight to your kart. Robert easily mounted the system using the brackets supplied with the system and by bolting it to the driver faring supports.

arters have always strived to be more like Indy Car or Formula 1 drivers and teams. Everything from the fancy and colorful suits and helmets, to the large transporters pulling into the paddock of a local club event; karting is the mini F1. Same goes for the data acquisition systems found on almost every kart on the track. For the most part these data systems are a data logging system in which the data is captured and stored on the device then downloaded onto a computer for later analysis. Data acquisition as we know it is about to change with the new system from RaceCloud.

No holes were drilled into the driver fairing as they were not required. In less than an hour the RaceCloud system was fully installed with its own weather station and we were now ready to fire it up. Since the system defaulted to metric, we quickly changed all of the parameters to standard for easier reading. First, we needed to calibrate the motion sensor. This was easily done by finding a flat area and after a few seconds, it was complete. With the system calibrated we returned to the main screen and the RaceCloud dash automatically located our position and knew we were at Apex. RaceCloud has over a thousand tracks and their coordinates already programed so the GPS will automatically find the track you are at. If you are at an unknown track or temporary circuit, the people at RaceCloud make it very simple to create your own track. So simple you think that it is trick. After we see Apex on the dash, Tyler heads on track to try out the RaceCloud system. 44

In the pits Arie Zimmermann, my son and a Junior Rotax driver, is in charge of the iPad. We notice that we can see RPM, speed, water temp, G-forces, steering angle, and weather, but no laps. The session is one entire lap. Tyler comes in after just a few laps and tells us he sees the same thing. Come to find out, that “unknown” is next to Apex on the dash and below that is another track called Apex so we choose this one for the next session. As Tyler heads back out on track we now see the lap times on the iPad. The difference in laps are also shown on the iPad and we can see if Tyler is getting quicker or if he slowing down. As Tyler pulls in he tells us that while on track, he configured the dash to show lap difference rather than best lap and also choose to show speed rather than RPM. “At the top of the dash is an RPM graph so there is no need to show RPM twice,” Tyler remarked. Also he confirmed that the LED lights on the top of the dash were working. They turn green in a series of succession depending on how much faster your lap or sector time was over the previous lap. For example if you are a tenth or under quicker the center LED light turns green, if you are a tenth to two tenths quicker two LED lights turn green. This is great for a quick reference in the driver’s peripheral vision when there is no time to look at the actual time. The same is true for the LED lights when you are slower, the light(s) turn red. All of the days test runs were done during GO Racing Magazine

extreme daylight; so I asked Tyler if the dash had a reflection or if he had a hard time seeing the numbers while in the bright sunshine. Since the dash is set up very similar to the Mercedes Formula 1 team’s dash on their steering wheel, he had no problem what so ever. In fact the characters and background are reversible for ease of reading during night races. On the next run, Tyler and I talk about setting split times. RaceCloud enables the driver to manually set the spilt points on the track so you end up having three sectors (or more if you would like) on the track, again much like Formula 1. Having three sectors on the track proved invaluable for Tyler as you can easily see if the changes made to the kart are working only in certain areas. Also as a driver you can compare laps and sector times, RPM, MPH, etc. to figure out what you can do to better your time. For a second opinion we had Arie head on track in Tyler’s kart. Even though this was Arie’s first time in a Senior Rotax and nowhere near fitting in Tyler’s seat, Arie was able to see the advantages of RaceCloud while on track. RaceCloud has so much information that the only problem we see is that you will not have enough time to both analyze the data between sessions and work on the kart. The most efficient method will be for your tuner to watch your telemetry live and have a plan before the driver comes into the pits at the end of the session. This is what we did while Tyler was on track although our sole purpose of the track day was to test the new RaceCloud data acquisition system. All of the changes

made to the karts set up are easily stored on the iPad for the next session on track. The driver can then analyze the data while his tuner is working on the kart. Then of course after the day is over both the tuner and driver can sit down and really review the data to figure out the best options for the next day or event. In conclusion, from a drivers and tuners perspective; this is the best system currently on the market. If you want to be like the “big boys” than this is the closest you are going to get. If you have someone watching your data as you are on track then this will prove to save time in between sessions by reducing the debrief session. Even if you are not in competitive national racing, your wife, husband, brother, aunt, dog, etc. can log in at home and watch your data from across the country or from other side of the globe. In fact while we were testing, the RaceCloud engineers logged on and could see our data live all the way from Europe. The set-up is simple, reading the data is simple, scrolling through the dash is simple and using the iPad data is simple. For Tyler Brooks who has raced everything and everywhere for the last 20 years to say RaceCloud is the best system he has ever encountered, says something about how good RaceCloud actually is. K1 RaceGear, the official importer of RaceCloud is now accepting preorders. Systems will be available in November 2014. Please call 760-2680710 or 888-514-3277 to be one of the first karters to use telemetry. GO
