As Environmental Stewardship is one of the four developmental objectives for the school district, I have the distinct honour of working with many stakeholders groups to support this objective throughout the district. While I work with individual teachers and their classes, I also work with green teams, green and energy ambassadors, their sponsors, administration, district staff and various community partners. We collaboratively support environmental stewardship in the following eight focus areas:

Secondary Mentoring Program 2013-14
! Norma Jamieson, District Consultant Secondary, Learning Services Our secondary mentoring community is buzzing with energy and excitement! Mentors and mentees have collaborated on several challenging areas to explore including creating classroom community, embedding C21 technologies, finding life/work balance, differentiating instruction for all learners & motivating reluctant learners. The Secondary Mentoring Program is designed for teachers who are new to the profession as well as those transitioning within the profession as their assignments change. The voluntary program is non-evaluative and non-remedial. Criteria and responsibilities are identified for both mentors and mentees. Release time is provided for the implementation of three components: 1. Whole Group Mentoring Series planned and facilitated by mentors/consultants re building the skills and processes of learning-focused mentoring relationships in order to professionally discuss challenging areas of daily teaching practice; 2. One-to-One Mentor/Mentee Session(s) re working together on individual professional development goals through focused observations and reflective conversation regarding classroom practice; and 3. Mentor Training Workshop Series re developing capacity and building mentorship skills in supporting, creating challenge, and facilitating vision with mentees while mentors are experienc-

The development and growth of our enhanced district Secondary Mentoring Program 2013-14 (in conjunction with the Resource/ESL, Intermediate, and Primary Mentoring Programs) builds on the momentum of the pilot launched last year. With the ongoing commitment and support of the Richmond Teachers Association and the Richmond School District, our secondary mentoring model is responsive to the culture and needs of the district; is in tune with the new ministry-funded provincial mentoring initiative; and is sustainable through organization and funding in the long term. Our feedback confirms that benefits of mentoring significantly impact individual teachers, school communities, and district culture. After the excitement of our teacher-librarian mini-conference in September, (Theme: Creating Engagement in the Library”) where TLs came to the DRC for a day of workshops and in-service on the new resources we have available, I had the opportunity to get out to schools and bring Pro-D to individual staffs. Every year, we offer a series of “Lunch Bag Pro-D” sessions, hosted by individual teacher-librarians who invite me to their school to share some tips on using one of the many e-resources we have in the district. This term, our focus has been on using EBSCO magazines (specifically the “Scholastic News” series from 1- 6) to find articles for differentiating instruction. Teachers bring their lunch to the lab or library, and in about 20 minutes, we look at Scholastic News, how to find articles, how to link to them and talk about how they might be used. These magazines, searchable back to 1999 are a tremendous source of “atgrade-level” articles to supplement a text-
LEARNING SERVICES book, introduce a topic or to simply provide additional reading on a theme. Just imagine how having a (virtual) stack of gradeappropriate reading material at your fingertips whenever you need it! All of these resources, and more, are available via the school library catalog of every Richmond school. GRADES K THROUGH 7 TEACHERS, RESOURCE STAFF AND EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANTS ARE ALL INVOLVED IN THIS EXCITING EXPLORATION OF BEST PRACTICE. THE SCHOOL IS FOCUSSED ON PROMOTING MINDFUL TEACHING OF COMBINED GRADES, SUPPORTING STUDENT DIVERSITY, INFUSING THE USE OF MANIPULATIVES AND LANGUAGE INTO MATH LESSONS, EXPLORING ALTERNATE ASSESSMENT AND MEANINGFUL TASKS. OVER THE TERM, TEACHERS WILL CO-PLAN AND DELIVER LESSONS DESIGNED WITH ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS IN MIND. THIS FORM OF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING IS POWERFUL AND INTENSELY PERSONAL. HATS OFF TO THOSE TEACHERS WHO ARE PUTTING THEMSELVES “OUT THERE” PROFESSIONALLY.
