Poem Christ’s Nativity AWAKE, glad heart! get up and Sing, It is the Birth-day of thy King, Awake! awake! The Sun doth shake Light from his locks, and all the way Breathing Perfumes, doth spice the day. Awake, awake! hark, how the wood rings, Winds whisper, and the busy springs A concert make; Awake! awake! Man is their high-priest, and should rise To offer up the sacrifice. I would I were some Bird, or Star, Fluttering in woods, or lifted far Above this Inn And Road of sin! Then either Star, or Bird, should be Shining, or singing still to thee. I would I had in my best part Fit Rooms for thee! or that my heart Were so clean as Thy manger was!

But I am all filth, and obscene, Yet, if thou wilt, thou canst make clean. Sweet Jesu! Will then; Let no more This Leper haunt, and soil thy door, Cure him, Ease him O release him! And let once more by mystic birth The Lord of life be born on Earth. Silent Night | Melody with text | Bass I | 10.24.16

peace,
Cold are the people winter of life, We tremble in shadows this cold endless night, Frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping, Flowers that will echo the sunrise, Fire of hope is our only warmth, Weary, its flame will be dying soon. Voice in the distance, call in the night, On wind you enfold us, you speak of the light, Gentle on the ear you whisper softly, Rumors of a dawn so embracing, Breathless love awaits darkened souls, Soon will we know of the morning. Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright. Round yon Virgin Mother and Child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Spirit among us, shine like the star, Your light that guides shepherds and kings from afar Shimmer in the sky so empty, lonely, Rising in the warmth of your Son’s love, Star unknowing of night and day, Spirit we wait for your loving Son.
Scripture Reading Isaiah 9:2-7 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. 4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, PAGE 5

Scripture Reading Luke 1 Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat 46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” Mary Did You Know? Performed in 2016
Mark Lowry and Buddy Green arr. Craig Courtney Choirs and Orchestra
Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know that your baby boy would someday walk on water? Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters? PAGE 7
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new? This child that you delivered will soon deliver you. Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man? Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with His hand? Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod? When you kissed your little baby, then you kissed the face of God. Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary did you know? The blind will see, the deaf will hear, The dead will live again: the lame will leap, the dumb will speak the praises of the Lamb. Mary, did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation? Mary, did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations? Did you know that your baby boy was heaven’s perfect Lamb? This sleeping child you’re holding, is the great, the great I AM! Mary did you know? When the Stars Shone Down
Steven Aldridge College Choir and Men’s Choir
O night when stars shone down, the Lord of Heav’n was born. While the shepherds abiding heard the song heaven was singing: Adoramus te, glorificamus te, Rex Gloria! O night when stars shone down, the Son of God was born. Angel choirs filled the sky o’er Bethlehem. The heavens were singing: Adoramus te, glorificamus te, Rex Gloria! O glorious Lord of Light, O Light of our dark night, born to the world that night when stars shone down, While heaven was singing: Adoramus! Glorificamus! Rex Gloria!

Three Christmas Poems Shepherd’s Song at Christmas Look there at the star! I, among the least, Will arise and take A journey to the East. But what shall I bring As a present for the King? What shall I bring to the Manger? I will bring a song, A song that I will sing, In the Manger. Watch out for my flocks, Do not let them stray. I am going on a journey Far, far away. But what shall I bring As a present for the Child? What shall I bring to the Manger? I will bring a lamb, Gentle, meek, and mild, A lamb for the Child In the Manger. I’m just a shepherd boy, Very poor I am— But I know there is A King in Bethlehem. What shall I bring As a present just for Him? What shall I bring to the Manger? I will bring my heart And give my heart to Him. I will bring my heart To the Manger.

Bring a Torch
Traditional French Carol arr. David Shipps Symphonic Band
Scripture Reading Luke 2 The Birth of Jesus In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. 4
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 8
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
13
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” 14
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” 15
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. 16

A La Nanita Nana Performed in 2019
Traditional Spanish Carol arr. Christopher Azzara Trebles and Orchestra
A la nanita nana, nanita e-a, My little Jesus sweetly sleeps, o bless him, o bless him. Little flowing fountain, sparkling and musical, Nightingale of the woods, crying as you sing, Hush while the cradle’s swaying, swaying and swinging, A la nanita nana, nanita e-a, My little Jesus sweetly sleeps, o bless him, o bless him Joy to the World
arr. Mark Patterson Children’s Choir
Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and heav’n and nature sing. Joy to the world, the Savior reigns! Let us our songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hill and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love, And wonders of his love, And wonders, wonders of his love.
PAGE 11
Scripture Reading Matthew 1: 18-23 18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 20
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). 22

Each of the department’s degree programs combines a performance-oriented, nationally accredited education with real-world experience, graduating young adults who possess not only exceptional skill and knowledge, but also the experience required to have a crucial impact within their communities. A part of the Division of Fine Arts at Gordon College and one of only 19 schools in New England fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Department of Music offers undergraduate degrees (B.M., B.A.) in which students may specialize in performance, music education or liberal arts. Upon successful completion of all program requirements, music education graduates are eligible for licensure in 48 states through the NASDTEC Interstate Contract. An innovative summers-only Master of Music Education degree combines intense research and classroom study with concrete improvement in teaching ability and technique. Over 120 students in these programs benefit from the expertise of 35 full-time and part-time faculty and instructors, many of whom are recognized leaders in their fields. Numerous community music initiatives in the summer season and throughout the academic year bring the joy of music to the local community. The Gordon Symphonic Band and other College performing ensembles incorporate community members in a truly intergenerational approach to music-making. There are also varied programs at Gordon which instill a love of music in local children, whether it’s singing in the Children’s Choir, spending time on campus during popular music camps, making music with a parent in an early childhood music class, or learning how to play an instrument for the first time in private lessons.
