The year 2017 is a big year for Canada, and it’s a big year for the Ottawa Chamber. The Chamber turns 160 in June, and we’re working to make this a year to remember for Ottawa business.

Although much has changed in 160 years, one thing has never wavered: the Ottawa Chamber’s commitment to being the guardian of Ottawa business interests and providing the leadership necessary to enhance economic prosperity and wealth creation. To stay current with the needs of our members, we are modernizing our membership model.

Following extensive consultation, we’ve heard our members loud and clear: Our members want membership levels that reflect value.

As a result, we have rejuvenated our membership categories to reflect the benefits offered, instead of employee head counts. Now we are asking the Ottawa business community to give us their support by joining the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce.

Building on a rich history that helped create the modern-day Winterlude celebrations and the Tulip Festival, the Ottawa Chamber is focused on delivering unparalleled value for the local business community. We advocate to ensure that Ottawa attracts top talent; builds modern infrastructure that reflects the growth of our community; develops a culture of entrepreneurship and business creation for economic growth; and works to reduce the cumulative regulatory burden faced by businesses.

En juin, celle-ci aura 160 ans, et nous travaillons ferme à faire de 2017 une année dont on se souviendra dans le milieu des affaires d’Ottawa.

Bien que beaucoup de choses aient changé en 160 ans, il en est une qui jamais n’a vacillé : l’engagement de la chambre d’Ottawa à demeurer la gardienne des intérêts commerciaux d’Ottawa, en offrant le leadership nécessaire pour rehausser la prospérité et la création de richesse. Afin de rester à l’écoute des besoins de nos membres, nous sommes en train de moderniser notre modèle d’adhésion.

Après de nombreuses consultations, nous avons entendu et compris nos membres : ils veulent des niveaux d’adhésion qui reflètent la valeur. Par conséquent, nous avons renouvelé nos catégories d’adhésion en fonction des avantages offerts, plutôt que du nombre d’employés. Nous demandons maintenant au milieu des affaires d’Ottawa de nous apporter son soutien en joignant les rangs de la Chambre de commerce d’Ottawa.

Capital Celebrating Capital WHEN THE TEAM

behind Capital magazine was preparing this third issue, we were struck by the parallels between the stories we read about Ottawa’s growth, and our own story as a fledgling publication.

Capital emerged from an observation that something was missing in the city’s business and editorial space. The idea gained steam in a series of enthusiastic conversations between the right people, at the right moment.

The discussions—like much of our city’s history— were cautiously vibrant; after all, we live in a world where print isn’t revered the way it used to be. But they ultimately closed with a resounding: “Yes, let’s do this!” Capital magazine was an idea whose time had come, just like Ottawa is gaining recognition as a city that matters.

Emphasizing engagement and creativity, like the millennials we spoke to for “A Matter of Perspective”, Capital is finding new ways to define what a print magazine can offer. By combining our print publication with a strong digital presence and hosting networking events in our community, we are extending our platform to other places where the business community is active.

Is it enough for a new magazine to thrive? Only time will tell, but we can continue looking for ways to innovate. Like the business leaders we spoke to for “CEO Talk,” we can nurture ideas.

If things don’t work, we can adjust—like the ByWard market is doing in our “Facelift” story.

What’s the take-away message? That finding success comes from the drive to believe, invest, innovate, and celebrate. It’s working for Ottawa, and it’s working for Capital too. As this city’s business community bustles with activity in 2017 and beyond, so will the Capital team. I’m proud to be part of both.

Célébration de Capital LORSQUE L’ÉQUIPE du magazine Capital prépa-

rait ce troisième numéro, nous avons été frappés de voir les parallèles entre les histoires que nous lisions à propos de la croissance d’Ottawa et notre propre histoire de publication nouvelle née.

Capital est issu d’une observation qu’il manquait quelque chose au monde des affaires et à l’espace éditorial d’Ottawa. L’idée a pris une vitesse de croisière intéressante dans une série de conversations enthousiastes entre les bonnes personnes, au bon moment. Les discussions, à l’instar d’une bonne partie de l’histoire de notre ville, étaient prudemment dynamiques; après tout, nous vivons dans un monde où l’imprimé n’est plus vénéré comme avant. Mais ces discussions se sont en fin de compte soldées par un retentissant : « Allons-y, faisons-le! » Le magazine Capital était une idée dont le temps était venu, comme Ottawa gagne de la reconnaissance à titre de ville qui compte.

Mettant l’accent sur l’engagement et la créativité, comme ceux de la génération du millénaire à qui nous avons parlé pour « Une question de perspective », Capital découvre de nouveaux moyens de définir ce qu’une revue imprimée peut offrir. En combinant notre publication papier avec une forte présence numérique et en animant des activités de réseautage dans notre communauté, nous étendons notre plateforme à d’autres lieux où le milieu des affaires est actif.

Mais est-ce suffisant pour qu’un nouveau magazine se démarque et prospère? Seul le temps le dira, mais nous pouvons continuer à rechercher des moyens d’innover. Comme les chefs d’entreprise interviewés pour « Causerie de PDG », nous pouvons nourrir des idées. Et si les choses ne fonctionnent pas, nous pouvons nous ajuster, comme le fait le marché By dans notre article sur le renouveau d’Ottawa.

Quel est le message à retenir? Que trouver le succès découle de l’impulsion de croire, d’investir, d’innover et de célébrer. Ça fonctionne pour Ottawa, et ça fonctionne aussi pour Capital. Tout comme le milieu des affaires de cette ville bourdonnera d’activité en 2017 et au-delà, il en sera de même pour l’équipe de Capital. OTTAWA MAY BE the small-

est of the world’s G7 capitals, and perhaps the least known.

But with Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations underway, the timing couldn’t be better for a coming-of-age party. Mayor Jim Watson expects that 2017 will see not only a boost in tourism, but also enough international media coverage to keep us in the spotlight.

The world-famous travel gurus at Lonely Planet recently listed Canada as a destination of choice, and Ottawa as a top city to visit. Other publications

regularly “discover” us—such as the Chicago Tribune, which recently featured Ottawa on the front page of its travel section.

Mayor Watson sees a direct connection between this flattering attention, and the amount of money being spent on the city—“about $10 million of public and private investment in construction,” he says. He calls the new infrastructure “an incredible renaissance” that not only draws people to visit, but keeps them coming back.

The evolution has been slow but steady, and the results are

starting to show. For one thing, demographic numbers suggest that there’s plenty to be proud of.

Ottawa has a well-educated work force, and the average household income is higher than it is in larger metropolitan centres, such as Toronto. “I’m sure many other world-class cities would be envious of what our population brings to the table,” says Cindy VanBuskirk, general manager of the Rideau Centre.

“Our demographics are very attractive, whether you’re looking to locate a business here, or wanting to invest.”

The Rideau Centre is owned by retail property giant Cadillac Fairview, which just invested $360 million to redevelop Ottawa’s downtown shopping mecca. And as VanBuskirk points out, that doesn’t happen “in markets that aren’t performing well, or that don’t have the potential to grow.” If all the forward-looking plans that are currently underway come to fruition, she says, “including the redevelopment of Lebreton Flats, Zibi by Windmill, the NAC, Arts Court, and the LRT, I can’t think of anything we might be lacking.”

But many other G7 capital cities also have shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and transit.

What gives Ottawa its unique identity is its distinctive northern landscape, says Dr. Mark Kristmanson, CEO of the National Capital Commission (NCC).

A recent study calculated that NCC lands represent a natural capital value of $5 billion— an asset that, combined with all of Ottawa’s others, contribute to the region’s long-term competitiveness, says Kristmanson.

“We need to protect green assets, and recognize their longterm value.”

The NCC’s Plan for Canada’s Capital, to be published this spring, identifies 17 milestone projects that chart a course

towards Canada’s bicentennial in 2067. “These ideas are drawn from extensive nationwide public input,” says Kristmanson; and their vision is of “a smart, sustainable and inclusive capital.”

métropolitains comme Toronto. « Je suis certaine qu’un grand nombre d’autres villes de renommée mondiale seraient envieuses de ce que notre population a à offrir », indique Cindy VanBuskirk, directrice générale du Centre Rideau. « Nos données démographiques sont très attrayantes, que vous cherchiez à vous établir en affaires ici ou à investir. » Le Centre Rideau est la propriété du géant des centres commerciaux Cadillac Fairview, qui vient tout juste d’investir 360 millions de dollars pour redévelopper l’eldorado du magasinage du centre-ville d’Ottawa. Et comme le fait remarquer Mme VanBuskirk, cela n’arrive pas dans les marchés qui ne fonctionnent pas bien ou qui n’ont pas un grand potentiel de croissance. Mais de nombreuses autres capitales du G7 offrent, elles aussi, magasinage, restaurants fins, divertissements et transport collectif. In part, Mayor Watson says, this is because we don’t have

the kind of marketing budget that other big cities have.

Despite this, he’s very optimistic about the future. “We’re firing on all cylinders,” he says.

“It’s just a great time to be living in Ottawa.”

Ottawa is truly a four-season destination—even in the winter, some people skate to work on the canal! It’s a safe, clean, and friendly city; and because it’s the nation’s capital, with the government here, it’s economically stable.

The town is full of educated people who are good earners— that’s why we have a great arts and restaurant scene.

like the $2.1-billion Light Rail Transit (LRT) system’s Confederation Line to the more prosaic combined sewage storage tunnel, the City of Ottawa has initiated some major infrastructure improvements in recent years.

The projects are plentiful and expensive: The city’s net debt has doubled since 2010 to fund them. But they are also necessary. “People used to say that Ottawa was the big little city, but now we’re turning into a little big city,” says John Smit, the

Many of the infrastructure projects come from the city’s “Building a Liveable Ottawa 2031” consultation process, which stressed that denser communities generally have fewer health problems than communities designed for cars. Still, health benefits are not the only advantage; denser spaces also cost less. The 2013 Transportation Master Plan, for instance, calculates the cost of

carrying one person one kilometre by different modes (taking into account the costs to government, users, and society of collisions and pollution; but excluding user time). Cars cost $0.716 per km, public transit $0.592, and cycling $0.159.

Predictably, the automobile is the most expensive form of transportation.

John Moser, the City’s general manager of planning and growth management, hopes to see the use of cars decline to 50 percent once the Confederation Line opens. “The city has put a lot of effort into increasing walking and cycling,” Moser says, noting that the city has been following this strategy for years—at least the last two turns of council.

“Yes, we will still be able to drive. But we want to make it easier for people to not use

their cars—to make it easier for them to use transit,” he adds.

Once the Confederation Line opens in 2018, getting downtown from points east and west will be much more convenient.

Although the Building a Liveable Ottawa strategy is relatively new, the construction of an LRT line has been decades in the making. “The old bus rapid transit system was built with a view that it would be transformed to a rail transportation system, says Smit. “Now that we’re approaching a million people, it’s time.”

The city projects that Ottawa’s population will grow

30 percent by 2031, and that by 2048, the LRT project will have saved $1.5 billion in time, $1.1 billion in vehicle operating costs, and $400 million through accident avoidance. That being the case, Smit says, the LRT will significantly support the city’s overall economic growth.

In fact, the LRT may already be boosting growth: So far, some $900 million of the $2.1billion project is being paid to local firms and subcontractors. The city is also working to attract development around the Confederation Line stations, by altering zoning to promote increased density.

This is especially evident around LeBreton Flats, which will be served by the Confederation Line. Planned in consultation with the Algonquin community in the area, it will have an aboriginal theme. The location will also improve transit connections with Gatineau.

One of the natural highlights of the neighbourhood is the spectacular Chaudière Falls, which has been inaccessible to the public for many years. That will change with the arrival of the neighbouring Zibi development, a sustainably designed multi-use community of condos, town homes, parks, and commercial and retail spaces. In summer 2017 a lighting display is planned to showcase the falls, as part of Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations.

But for decades, the area has been run down.

“We hope to re-stitch this area into centre of the downtown, to bring it back into the fabric of the city,” says Smit.

“The Chaudière Falls is an iconic feature, and we want people to see what it’s all about.”

La Ville travaille également à attirer le développement autour des stations de la ligne de la Confédération, en modifiant le zonage afin de promouvoir une densité accrue.

C’est le cas autour des plaines LeBreton, qui seront desservies par cette ligne. Planifié en consultation avec la communauté algonquine de la région, l’arrondissement arborera un thème autochtone. Et ce secteur servira aussi à améliorer les correspondances de transports avec Gatineau.

L’un des attraits naturels est la spectaculaire chute des Chaudières, site fermé au public depuis des années. La situation va changer avec l’arrivée dans ce lieu laissé à l’abandon depuis des années du lotissement Zibi, une communauté multi-usage de condos, maisons de ville, parcs et commerces de détail de conception durable. À l’été 2017, à l’occasion 150e anniversaire, un éclairage décoratif illuminera les chutes. « Nous espérons raccrocher cette zone au centre-ville, pour la réintégrer au tissu de la ville, dit M. Smit. Cette chute est un attrait emblématique, et nous voulons que les gens puissent voir de quoi il s’agit. »

expected to bring an additional 1.75 million tourists to Ottawa, setting the stage for 2017 to be a banner year in more ways than one.

“All indicators are that 2017 is going to knock the socks off any previous year in Ottawa,” says Michael Crockatt, president and CEO of Ottawa Tourism.

Seven to eight million tourists typically visit Ottawa every year. In fact, tourism is one of the key economic sectors driving this city’s growth. “It is good for job creation, for tax generation, and supporting all the fantastic attractions that exist here,” says Crockatt.

But over and above the usual level of activity, Canada’s milestone birthday will kick the tourism sector into overdrive.

Extra visitors who come for the sequicentennial are predicted to generate more than $320 million in direct consumer spending.

The 2017 celebrations are also expected to create an additional 3,000 jobs directly and indirectly.

Guy Laflamme, executive director of Ottawa 2017, hopes that “the halo effect of 2017” will allow many of those jobs to remain for the long term.

“We feel we will be able to sustain those results, because of all the visibility we will generate nationally and internationally,” he says.

Laflamme says Ottawa 2017, which is an independent, notfor-profit organization, will generate $40 million worth of new celebration-related activities.

The organization received a

combination of federal, provincial and municipal funding, as well as funding from the private sector, with key partners including CIBC, Bell, Minto, Gowlings WLG, Stantec, Northern Micro, Roots, and Porter Airlines.

Laflamme credits the partnership with CIBC as key to securing the support of so many other businesses. “Once they came on board all other partners starting confirming their participation as a result of the credibility they brought,” he says.

In major sporting events alone, Ottawa welcomed the Davis Cup tennis match in early February, and will host the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open LPGA golf tournament at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club in August, and Grey Cup festivities at TD Place in November.

In March, the Red Bull Crashed Ice event, which combines skiing and skating in a high-speed race, will showcase

Les célébrations de 2017 devraient aussi créer, directement et indirectement, 3 000 emplois de plus.

Wooing visitors to Ottawa can be a challenge, since we’re located between the tourism powerhouses of Toronto and Montreal. But unlike those urban sprawls, Ottawa’s chief charm is its easy access to outdoor adventure.

“Ottawa is a metropolis, but it’s also the only G7 capital where you can go whitewater rafting in the city,” says Michael Crockatt, president and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. Even in the heart of downtown, he points out, people are only minutes away from being able to paddle a canoe on the Rideau Canal, or to go hiking, skiing, or mountain biking in the Gatineau Hills. These things, Crockatt says, are “what most differentiates us from other cities.”

And while Ottawa’s nightlife may not quite rival those of the biggest cities, we’re far from being a small town. Another big draw here is our national museums, which “tell the story of Canada—this is the place where we do that,” says Crockatt.

How best to spread the word about the city’s many attractions?

Like all marketing activities, promoting tourism can no longer be done with just the traditional methods. In the modern era, Crockatt says, the use of social media is key to success.

“Instead of just telling people what’s great about Ottawa, we want to help cultivate the conversations that people have among their own social networks,” he says. In his view, everybody who visits the city and has a great time can essentially act as “an advocate for our community, an extension of our marketing team.”

Ce sont ces choses, dit Crockatt, « qui nous différencient le plus des autres villes ».

Et bien que la vie nocturne d’Ottawa ne puisse pas tout à fait rivaliser avec celle des grandes métropoles, nous sommes loin de nous classer parmi les petites villes. Nos musées nationaux constituent un autre pôle important, « ils racontent l’histoire du Canada… c’est l’endroit où nous le faisons », mentionne M. Crockatt.

La meilleure manière de passer le mot à propos des nombreuses attractions de la ville? Comme toute activité de marketing, la promotion du tourisme ne peut plus compter que sur les moyens traditionnels. Dans notre ère moderne, souligne M. Crockatt, le recours aux médias sociaux est la clé du succès. « Au lieu de simplement dire aux gens ce qui est extraordinaire à Ottawa, nous désirons contribuer à cultiver les conversations que les gens entretiennent dans leurs propres réseaux sociaux », ajoute-t-il.

Selon lui, toute personne qui visite la ville et qui a aimé son expérience peut essentiellement agir à titre de « partisan de notre communauté, d’extension de notre équipe de marketing ».

the Ice Cross Downhill World Championship—a 300-metre skate race along artificial ice that will extend down the Rideau Canal locks from the lower terrace of the Chateau Laurier hotel to the edge of the Ottawa River.

Also in March, a four-day celebration of the 125th anniversary of the iconic Stanley Cup trophy will start with an event at Rideau Hall, then move to the Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne Park, the oldest building still standing where a Stanley Cup playoff was held.

On the cultural front, an ambient light and sound show is planned near Chaudière Falls, as a tribute to the culture of First Nations Canadians.

Through the summer months, Inspiration Village will be established in the ByWard Market, featuring 20 to 30 modified sea shipping containers that will honour each Canadian province and territory. As well, a touring exhibit, called “Odawa—150 Years of Indigenous Perspectives,” will highlight the Indigenous perspective of local history, communities and experiences through traditional and contemporary arts, crafts, and demonstrations.

This year will also feature the opening of the new Canadian History Hall at the Canadian Museum of History, a new Canada Goose Arctic Gallery at the Canadian Museum of Nature, and a newly revamped Canada Science and Technology Museum.

“In any other city, in any other year, a brand new national museum would be the only tourism story. But here it’s just one of so many great things that are coming to Ottawa,” says Crockatt.

Mais ici, ce n’est qu’une des si nombreuses attractions qui passent par Ottawa », conclut M. Crockatt.

But one of the city’s largest tourist attractions is facing a critical junction, as stakeholders question whether the ByWard Market revitalization is doing enough to keep the historic market competitive, especially as other Ottawa neighbourhoods gain traction.

A close-up look at restoring the outer face of an iconic landmark

Ottawa is in the midst of an unprecedented parliamentary shuffle, but this time it’s architectural, not political.

Behind the walls of scaffolding that currently surround the West Block of Parliament Hill, workers like Philippe Smith are labouring to return one of Ottawa’s most iconic buildings to its original lustre. It’s as complicated as parliamentary business can get: Instead of shuffling cabinet posts, Smith is replacing the roughly 2,000 exterior stones that have deteriorated beyond repair.

Co-founder of Ottawa’s Smith & Barber Sculpture Atelier, Smith—who was honoured with a Forty Under 40 award by the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and the Ottawa Business Journal in 2015—is one of few Canadians entitled to call himself a stonemason. The Government of Canada hired his firm in 2012 to begin the long and complex task of replacing crumbled rock with new—replicating each individual stone’s unique shape and variations. The goal is to return the buildings to their original like-new condition. It’s a very public task—Parliament Hill is the centrepiece of Ottawa’s downtown landscape, and more than 300,000 visitors tour the buildings every year.

Built in 1865, the West Block was unique in bringing elements of Gothic architecture—more typically found in churches—to the civic space. The shape of the building, with its arches, gargoyles, and ornamentation, is an example of the Victorian High Gothic style; but with a distinctly Canadian twist.

“Most Gothic work in Europe was rubbed and polished smooth; but on the Parliament buildings, the tooling is quite rough,” says

Smith, who completed his training in Europe after learning stone-cutting and carving at Algonquin College. “When you look at the stones, you can see the individual marks of each mason.” Once you know what to look for, Smith says, you can even tell whether the mason was right-handed or left-handed.

The distinctive stone used for the restoration is Berea sandstone, which comes from a quarry outside Cleveland, Ohio, that contains vast deposits of the prized substance. Even Canada’s government has to order Berea stone years in advance; and it “scoops up all the best quality,” Smith says.

The original architect, Smith explains, wanted the building “to match the ruggedness of the Canadian natural surroundings. If you look at the corner stones, called quoins, you might think they’re all the same. But look closely, and you’ll see they’re all different—like snowflakes, or the leaves on a tree.”

The work is intricate and long-term.

Work on the Centre Block is expected to start in 2018, which means that the postcard image of the Peace Tower that people most associate with Ottawa will be hidden from public view. With group tours of Centre Block often booked two years in advance, tour operators face some uncertainty when it comes to future bookings. This concern has tourism officials advocating for a stylized covering, using realistic imagery that would showcase the building’s beauty.

“Our desire would be to see a trompe l’oeil used at the Centre Block, so that the experience of seeing the grandeur of Parliament Hill can be retained during the renovation period,” says Catherine Frechette, senior director of destination development at Ottawa Tourism. “There’s a responsibility to our visitors and to generations of school children who would otherwise not get a sense of what their Parliament looks like.”

C’est une affaire parlementaire aussi complexe qu’elle puisse l’être : au lieu de réorganiser des cabinets, M. Smith s’affaire à remplacer les quelque 2 000 pierres extérieures qui se sont détériorées jusqu’à un point de non-retour.

Cofondateur de Smith & Barber – Sculpture Atelier, Philippe Smith, qui a reçu un prix « Forty Under 40 » de la Chambre de commerce d’Ottawa et du Ottawa Business Journal en 2015, est l’un des rares Canadiens autorisés à se faire appeler tailleur de pierres.

Le gouvernement du Canada a retenu les services de son entreprise en 2012 pour commencer la longue et complexe tâche de remplacer les pierres qui s’effritaient par des pierres neuves, en reproduisant la forme unique et les variations de chacune individuellement. L’objectif étant de ramener les immeubles à leur état neuf d’origine.

C’est une tâche très publique — la Colline du Parlement étant au centre du paysage du centre-ville d’Ottawa et attirant plus de 300 000 visiteurs chaque année.

Construit en 1865, l’édifice de l’Ouest apportait à l’époque aux lieux municipaux des éléments de l’architecture gothique, que l’on retrouvait plus généralement dans les églises. La forme de l’édifice, avec ses arches, ses gargouilles et ses ornements, est un exemple du style néo-gothique de l’apogée victorienne, mais avec une touche distinctement canadienne.

« La plupart des ouvrages gothiques d’Europe étaient polis pour obtenir une finition lisse, mais sur les bâtiments du parlement, le façonnage est plutôt brut », indique M. Smith, qui a terminé sa formation en Europe, après avoir appris la taille et le modelage de la pierre au collège Algonquin. « Lorsque vous regardez attentivement les pierres, vous pouvez y voir les marques individuelles de chaque maçon. Une fois que vous savez ce que vous cherchez, ajoute Philippe Smith, vous arrivez même à savoir si le maçon était gaucher ou droitier. » La pierre distinctive qui sert à la remise en état est du grès de Berea provenant d’une carrière près de Cleveland en Ohio et contenant de vastes dépôts de la précieuse substance. Même le gouvernement du Canada doit commander la pierre de Berea des années d’avance; et il « récolte la meilleure qualité », ajoute M. Smith.

L’architecte qui a conçu ces édifices, explique M. Smith, désirait que le bâtiment « reflète l’aspect rude de l’environnement naturel canadien. Si vous regardez les pierres de coin, que l’on appelle les pierres angulaires, vous pouvez penser de prime abord qu’elles sont toutes pareilles. Mais en y regardant de plus près, vous verrez qu’elles sont toutes différentes, comme les flocons de neige, ou les feuilles d’un arbre. » Le travail est finement ouvragé et exige beaucoup de temps. Les travaux de l’édifice du Centre devraient commencer en 2018, ce qui signifie que l’image de carte postale de la tour de la Paix, que les gens associent le plus à Ottawa, sera dissimulée à la vue du public.

Alors que les visites guidées de l’édifice du Centre sont souvent organisées jusqu’à deux années d’avance, les voyagistes voient l’avenir des réservations avec un soupçon d’incertitude. Les responsables touristiques préconisent donc un échafaudage stylisé se servant d’images réalistes qui reproduiraient la beauté de l’édifice. « Nous aimerions que l’on utilise sur l’édifice du Centre un trompe-l’œil, de manière à préserver l’expérience de grandeur de la Colline du Parlement pendant les rénovations », indique Catherine Frechette, directrice du développement de la destination à Tourisme Ottawa. « C’est une responsabilité que nous avons envers nos visiteurs et les générations d’écoliers qui, autrement, ne sauront pas à quoi ressemble le Parlement. »

a partner in the swanky Moscow Tea Room.

Schad is enthusiastic about the area’s history, museums, and its wealth of upscale galleries, restaurants, and retail. But he worries that the market isn’t getting the attention it needs.

And Schad says that while he’s “a big believer in the great world-class events we’re hosting in 2017,” he was disappointed that nothing was planned in the market for the Winterlude festival—one of Ottawa’s signature events.

And Schad doesn’t mince his words about who’s responsible.

“For the last 20 years, the market has been mismanaged, underfunded, and neglected by the city,” he says. Aside from its huge draw as a trendy place to visit, the area also “produces $1.3 million in parking revenue every year—and we don’t see any of it, not even a dollar for Christmas lights.”

Et Andre Schad ne mâche pas ses mots quand vient le temps de désigner qui en est responsable. « Au cours des 20 dernières années, la Ville a mal géré, sous-financé et négligé

Schad, who sits on the ByWard Market Business Improvement Association, also says the market needs a greater diversity of merchants. “There were 17 retailers on Clarence Street at one point, but now there are 17 restaurants,” he says.” Too many restaurants in the market means that the balance is gone and the lunch business is divided between hundreds of establishments.”

Shannon Kenney, the City of Ottawa’s program manager for licensing, markets, and events, says that some changes are being made. The revitalization plan involves creating a public seating space in front of the main Market Square building.

“Right now, there’s nowhere to sit if you buy a snack,” says Kenney. The construction—complete with greenery, benches, and a landmark heritage clock—should be completed before the market season starts in the spring.

The city has also created a new governance model for market vendors: Instead of being

managed by the city, in the future they’ll be managed by a stand-alone corporation that’s at arm’s length.

“Right now, the market is so highly regulated that it’s difficult to do pilot projects, or measure the success of initiatives,” Kenney says. But the corporation will be free of that bureaucracy, which will “allow them to try new things. We’re hoping this new model will help create more synergies.”

One aspect of the revitalization that has some vendors worried is a proposed shuffle of booths, storefronts, and spaces in the market building.

Henri Groulx, president of the ByWard Market Standholders Association, says that the plan to physically relocate some sellers has made many apprehensive about how the move will affect their bottom lines.

For instance, some merchants who used to sell from the coveted spots at the front of the building are being moved to new quarters. “People on William Street

La Ville a aussi créé un nouveau modèle de gouvernance pour les commerçants du marché : au lieu d’être gérés par la Ville, ils seront désormais gérés par une société distincte sans lien de dépendance. « En ce moment, le marché est tellement réglementé qu’il est difficile d’effectuer des projets pilotes ou de mesurer le succès des initiatives », indique Mme Kenney. Mais la société sera exempte de cette bureaucratie, ce qui « lui permettra d’essayer de nouvelles choses.

Nous espérons que ce nouveau modèle contribuera à créer davantage de synergies. » La réorganisation proposée des kiosques, devantures et espaces locatifs dans le bâtiment du marché est l’un des aspects de la revitalisation qui préoccupe certains des commerçants.

“For many vendors, this is their livelihood—some have been doing it for 40 years,” he points out. “Losing their spot would be comparable to losing a job.” Trying to look on the bright side, he adds: “This could be a good thing, because more of the vendors will be spread out. But we won’t know until next year.”

Most people agree, though, that the critical thing is to keep the spirit of the ByWard Market alive. Kenney points out that one aspect of the revitalization is to create a destination for locals— not just for tourists getting dropped off by a bus.

And in fact, locals are the people best placed to know that the market vibe can’t be found anywhere else in the city. “We’re here because of the diversity and energy,” says Trefor Munn-Venn, co-leader of Rhapsody Strategies, a business coaching and consultation company located above Zak’s Diner, half a block north of the market building. “Any time of day or night you can look out the window and see photo shoots, Wookies and Jedis promoting events, and major politicians passing through.”

That kind of energy, Munn-Venn believes, “is very important for us and our clients.” And he’s optimistic about the positive effect the new Light Rail Transit system will have when it’s able to bring visitors downtown in 2018. “When you simplify people’s transportation habits and give them easier options, they make different choices,” he says. “That easy access will be a real benefit to this area.”

est-growing demographic groups today, a natural target of marketers and brands whose goal is to engage and connect with them. They’re also a force to be reckoned with in the workplace. Whether climbing corporate ladders or launching their own businesses, millennials have the power to transform cultures, practices, and policies.

Some critics view “Generation Me” in unflattering terms, describing millennials as entitled, lazy, and lacking in life experience. But Lindsay Doyle, a consultant at Summa Strategies, disagrees. “The younger generation of professionals in Ottawa are some of the hardest-working people I know,” she says. Their approach to business emphasizes social media, consumer engagement, creative graphics, and branding. Doyle, who specializes in consumer issues and stakeholder relations, says that “they want their products and services to be different—they believe they have a unique story to tell.”

One such millennial is Amanda Ruddy of Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, who was recently promoted to the major events team. “I work with a team of about 130

Bluesfest succeeds by building from the ground up

The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kanye West have headlined. The Tragically Hip have performed at least six times. More than 300,000 people attend the festival every year, more than a third of them from out of town.

By any measure, Ottawa Bluesfest is a major hit.

Its reputation, locally and beyond, is such that it now generates some $30 million a year for Ottawa hotels, bars, restaurants, and businesses, and more than half of Ottawa residents have attended a Bluesfest event in the past five years.

One obvious reason for its success is the awesome music it brings to town. The Bluesfest lineup is a complex mix of genres, bands, and artists, designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes and ages. “We look at the programming as a multidemographic exercise,” says Mark Monahan, the festival’s executive director. “We have to have youth, we have to have vintage or nostalgia, and everything in between.”

Keeping Bluesfest fresh and relevant, and constantly broadening and improving it, is a challenge the organizers are more than equal to.

Young people are enlisted to an advisory group to help organizers keep up with what’s popular. Staff also visit other youth festivals, such as Bonnaroo and Coachella, “to see what others are doing,” Monahan says.

Bluesfest—which turns 24 this summer—is about more than just the music, though. It’s a local institution, one that’s adept at engaging the local community and giving back to it: More than 4,000 volunteers help run the festival every year.

And the Westboro-based Bluesfest School of Music and Art reaches out to more than 5,000 children in Ottawa classrooms. That educational outreach has created not just awareness in the community, Monahan says, but also “a keen interest in supporting the festival, and participating ... it really contributes to the vibrancy of the community.”

The lineup for Bluesfest 2017 will be announced in March. It’s a good bet that music-lovers all across Ontario are eagerly awaiting the news about “one of the great things that happen in Ottawa,” Monahan says.

Des jeunes font partie d’un groupe consultatif qui les aide à rester au fait de ce qui est populaire. Le personnel se rend aussi à d’autres festivals de jeunes, comme Bonnaroo et Coachella, « pour voir ce que font les autres », dit M. Monahan.

Mais le Bluesfest, qui fêtera ses 24 ans cet été, c’est bien plus que la musique. C’est une institution locale, très douée pour faire participer la collectivité et pour donner au suivant : plus de 4 000 bénévoles contribuent à la bonne marche du festival chaque année.

Et l’école Bluesfest School of Music and Art établie à Westboro tend la main à plus de 5 000 enfants des salles de classe d’Ottawa. L’action éducative n’a pas seulement sensibilisé la collectivité, ajoute M. Monahan, mais elle a aussi soulevé un réel intérêt à appuyer le festival et à y participer … « cela contribue vraiment à l’ambiance dans la collectivité ».

Et il y a fort à parier que les amateurs de musique de partout en Ontario attendent impatiemment des nouvelles de « l’une des choses géniales qui se passent à Ottawa », indique Mark Monahan.

November 2017, expects that the year of Canada’s 150th birthday will boost the city’s profile even further. “There are so many sporting, cultural, and social events taking place,” she says—not to mention all the restaurants, craft brewers, festivals, and concerts that local merchants and organizers have to offer. “We have a lot of creative ways to spread the word about the value of coming to Ottawa,” Ruddy says.

Millennials appreciate the city’s charms—and, Doyle says, “they demand more from it.”

She’s been in Ottawa for eight years, and feels that the place “looks and feels dramatically different today from when I moved here. I look forward to seeing it in another eight years.”

Malgré qu’il ait été promu de l’université après au même moment où la récession a sévi, il a été en mesure de trouver du travail presque immédiatement. « J’ai approché les employeurs avant-gardistes parce que je voulais travailler pour des entreprises qui étaient prêtes à saisir les occasions, dit-il. Ottawa offre tellement de possibilités aux personnes qui sont à l’aise dans des environnements adaptables. » Bryan Vaughan a une carrière formidable, et il considère que cette ville offre une excellente qualité de vie. « Ottawa est en train de se débarrasser de sa réputation de “ville où le plaisir a oublié de s’arrêter”, dit-il. Nous avons beaucoup à offrir, sur le plan social et culturel. »

Amanda Ruddy, dont le travail consiste à préparer Ottawa à accueillir le 105e festival de la Coupe Grey en novembre 2017, s’attend à ce que le 150e anniversaire du Canada propulse le profil de la ville encore plus loin. « Il y aura tellement d’événements sportifs, culturels et sociaux qui auront lieu », souligne-t-elle (sans mentionner tous les restaurants, les microbrasseries, les festivals et les concerts que les marchands et organisateurs locaux ont à offrir). « Nous avons beaucoup de moyens créatifs de passer le mot quant à la valeur et la pertinence de venir à Ottawa », ajoute Amanda Ruddy.

Les gens de la génération du millénaire apprécient les charmes de la ville et, souligne Mme Doyle, « ils en exigent davantage ». Elle est à Ottawa depuis huit ans et a le sentiment que l’endroit a considérablement changé depuis qu’elle y a emménagé. Et elle a bien hâte de voir ce qu’il sera devenu dans huit autres années.

“I pursued forward-thinking employers because I wanted to work for companies that were prepared for opportunities,” he says. “Ottawa has so many opportunities for people who thrive in agile environments.” Although Vaughan has a great career, he sees this city as offering a great quality of life.

construction worker, musician, poet—and a movie star who won an academy award. Chief Dan George of the TsleilWaututh Nation in North Vancouver died in 1981, but he left us some advice that’s badly needed in the world today.

The heart never knows the colour of the skin.

If you fell in love with someone’s voice or personality without ever seeing them, their physical appearance would be meaningless. To bring nations and people together, Chief Dan George always emphasized the heart. If we only come together physically, he said, the walls will be as high as mountains.

Nothing belongs to you, so you must share.

Do we really ever own anything, or are we just borrowing? Our home is a temporary residence and our money will one day be in the hands of someone else.

All that we claim to own is not truly owned, but just used while we are here. Chief Dan George believed that all things—including the earth itself, are of benefit to all people. Think “share” instead of “own.”

What you do not know, you will fear. What one fears, one destroys.

We do indeed want to destroy that which we fear. The wars that rage across our planet every day, and every human conflict, possess fear at the core. The solution, said Chief Dan George, is understanding.

Chief Dan George did not begin his acting career until he was in his 60s. He first spent 30 years as a logger, until a large load of lumber fell on top of him, and then he thought acting would be less dangerous. He became a Hollywood legend, starring with Dustin Hoffman in the movie “Little Big Man” in 1970, but he continued to live in the tiny house he built on his B.C. reserve.

Nous désirons, en effet, détruire ce que nous craignons. Les guerres qui font rage chaque jour sur notre planète et tous les conflits humains sont animés par la peur. La solution, dit le chef Dan George, c’est la compréhension. Nous devons parler, écouter et apprendre à dissiper la peur.

Si vous parlez avec les animaux, et eux avec vous, disait-il, vous apprendrez à vous connaître l’un l’autre.

Le chef Dan George n’a commencé sa carrière d’acteur que lorsqu’il avait dans les 60 ans.
