Le printemps à nos portes

Spring is the perfect time to step back, assess your life, and make adjustments in the direction you want to be headed. With the long-awaited arrival of warmer weather, I am always eager to reconnect with the sunshine and soil.

Le printemps est le meilleur moment pour prendre un peu de recul, évaluer votre vie et faire les ajustements nécessaires quant à la direction que vous voulez prendre. Avec l’arrivée de températures plus clémentes longuement attendues, j’ai toujours hâte de prendre contact avec le soleil et le sol.

Cet attrait vers l’extérieur est un thème très puissant tout au long de ce numéro. Chacun des projets que nous présentons dans ces pages met l’accent sur la construction durable ainsi que l’utilisation du bois et d’autres matières naturelles. Et tous sont situés à Vancouver, dans mon coin de pays.

Dans le design, il y a toujours un aspect de renouveau — une recherche constante de nouvelles idées et d’innovation pour atteindre les objectifs des clients, et bien souvent ayant pour but de surpasser leurs attentes.

Dans ce numéro, nous présentons une petite boutique qui transforme notre manière de penser au commerce de détail de luxe, et une organisation qui s’investit à inspirer un changement positif pour ses employés, l’environnement et la fabrication intelligente de ses produits. Le design des nouveaux quartiers généraux de MEC est un réel reflet de l’harmonisation importante de la stratégie du milieu de travail et de la structure organisationnelle. Ce n’est un secret pour personne que le design est un élément d’influence pour motiver le changement. Nous explorons davantage ce principe et ses effets sur les employés dans notre article sur la gestion du changement.

That draw to the outdoors is a strong theme throughout this issue. Each of the projects we feature within these pages places emphasis on green building, and the use of wood and other natural materials. All of them are located in Vancouver, in my neck of the woods.

There is always an aspect of renewal in design – a constant search for ideas and innovation to meet client objectives, and often with the goal of surpassing their expectations.

In this issue, we look at a small boutique that transforms the way we think about luxury retail design, and at an organization invested in inspiring positive change for its employees, the environment and the smart manufacturing of its products. The design of MEC’s new corporate office is a clear reflection of the important alignment of workplace strategy and organizational structure. It’s no secret that design is influential in motivating change. We explore this principle and its effect on employees further in our story on change management.

hen I was completing my undergraduate degree in fine arts at the University of Guelph, I remember my professors would encourage me to take advantage of my youth. “Try to see and do as much as possible,” they’d say. “Ten years from now you simply won’t have the time or energy.” Ironically, now that I’m approaching my mid-thirties, my schedule is much fuller than it ever was as an eager, twenty-something student. Looking back, I wish I had taken their advice a little more seriously.

I think that there is an organic relationship that exists between fine arts and interior design. So following graduation, I began to look for a job within the design

field. I eventually found a role at Hudson Kruse Design, a residential firm in Toronto, where I work in administration and business management.

As I signed paycheques for the interior designers, I would simultaneously eavesdrop on their

e me rappelle que lorsque je terminais mes études de premier cycle en beaux-arts à l’Université de Guelph, mes professeurs m’encourageaient à profiter de ma jeunesse. « Essaie de voir et de faire le plus de choses possible, me disaient-ils. Car dans dix ans, tu n’en auras simplement plus le temps ou l’énergie. » Ironiquement, alors que j’approche la mi-trentaine, mon horaire est plus chargé qu’il ne l’était lorsque j’étais une étudiante avide de connaissances au début de la vingtaine.

Mais rétrospectivement, je souhaiterais avoir pris leurs conseils un peu plus au sérieux.

Je crois qu’il existe une relation symbiotique entre les beaux-arts et le design d’intérieur. C’est pourquoi, après avoir été promue, j’ai commencé à chercher du travail dans le domaine du design. J’ai fini par trouver ma place chez Hudson Kruse Design, une agence de design résidentiel de Toronto, où je travaille en tant qu’administratrice et directrice des opérations.

Tandis que je signais les chèques de paie des designers d’intérieur, je tendais l’oreille lors

de leurs consultations de design.

Agissant en quelque sorte comme un détective privé, en recueillant des renseignements, je repensais à ma passion secrète, le design d’intérieur, et je me suis demandé : Est-ce réellement une chose que je veux faire? Et après huit années de tâches à titre d’agent double, j’ai décidé que la réponse était oui, que je devais foncer! Et, avec le soutien de mon mari, je me suis inscrite au programme de design d’intérieur en ligne de l’académie du design de l’institut de technologie RCC.

design consultations. Acting as a secret detective of sorts, collecting intel, I reported back to my inner passion, interior design, and I asked myself: “is this really something I want to do?” After eight years of double agent duty I decided that the answer was yes, go for it! And with the support of my husband, I enrolled in the online interior design program at The Academy of Design at the RCC Institute of Technology.

Now, with a healthy streak of grey hair and a preference for staying home on Friday nights, I find myself back in the role of a student.

I’m finding that being back at school is a rewarding challenge, and my experience to date is about juggling and balancing time.

When I was working on my bachelor’s degree, my priorities were making it to class on time, maintaining reasonable grades, and keeping up with an over-active social life. This time around, there’s a lot more on my to-do list: career, family, housework, personal wellness, finances, homework, and the list goes on… It also feels more critical than it did a decade ago. I have become a regimented, schedule-building drill sergeant (the difference being that I am still friendly and pleasant to interact with).

Although it’s undeniably difficult, it’s also completely manageable. Sometimes even the

Lorsque j’étudiais pour obtenir mon baccalauréat, mes priorités étaient d’arriver aux cours à l’heure, d’obtenir des notes raisonnables et de composer avec une vie sociale plutôt active. Cette fois, cependant, il y a bien plus de points sur ma liste de choses à faire : carrière, famille, tâches domestiques, bien-être personnel, finances, travaux scolaires et la liste continue de s’allonger… Et je ressens aussi davantage l’urgence de la finalité qu’une décennie plus tôt. Je suis devenue un sergent de régiment à cheval sur l’horaire (à la seule différence que je continue d’être aimable avec les autres).

Et bien que cela soit indéniablement difficile, c’est néanmoins tout à fait gérable. Parfois, même les questions les plus insignifiantes comme « Qu’est-ce qu’on mange pour souper? » peuvent faire s’effondrer ma pile de priorités.

La planification est la clé de ma réussite.

J’adore obtenir de bonnes notes, envoyer mon relevé à mes parents par courriel (oui, oui, même

Planning ahead is the key to my success. I love getting good grades, emailing my transcripts to my parents (yes, even at 33), and learning about something that has morphed into much more than an interest in all things design.

With a bit of practise I’ve developed a rhythm for myself, and I’ve found that the online forum allows for some time management wiggle room. Of course there are still deadlines and exams, but lectures and learning are done on my time, and in my pyjamas.

I’m a self-declared ‘nerdy

keener,’ so I’ve taken on some extracurricular activities to bolster my education. I volunteer with IDC, I write about design on my school’s blog, and on dobbernationloves.com. I also hold a position on The Academy’s Dean’s Council because, if you’re going to take the plunge, you might as well go all in!

I have two years left until I graduate, but with each passing semester I am that much closer to being able to call myself an interior designer. And although I don’t have the energy of a 20-year-old, I do have the responsibility of a 30-year-old, which I think will manifest in a much more successful grade point average. I am proof that it is doable, and that’s gratifying.

Il me reste encore deux années avant de terminer mes études, mais avec chaque semestre qui passe, je m’approche du moment où je pourrai porter le titre de designer d’intérieur. Et bien que je n’aie plus l’énergie des jeunes dans la vingtaine, j’ai le sens des responsabilités qui vient avec la trentaine, ce qui, je crois, se traduira par une meilleure moyenne générale. Je suis la preuve vivante que c’est faisable, et c’est très gratifiant.

6 Get involved. Volunteering some of your time in your provincial or national association will ultimately serve you and your voice as an interior designer in the future. They are a great resource for students.

7 Pat yourself on the back.

At the end of each term I look back at the work I managed to complete and feel a strong sense of satisfaction.

8 Make sure you have a decent laptop. (I learned this the hard way!)

You will need to schedule personal time. Making room for some “me” time will keep you from turning into a monster. This is important.

10 And last, I leave you with some cheesy motivational advice: there is no age limit on learning. Don’t be afraid to strive for more.

de cours qui vous convient et qui convient à votre situation.

6 Impliquez-vous. Faire un peu de bénévolat dans votre association provinciale ou nationale finira par vous servir dans votre future carrière de designer d’intérieur. Le travail bénévole constitue une excellente ressource pour les étudiants.

7 Accordez-vous un bon mot d’encouragement. À la fin de chaque semestre, je fais le point sur le travail que j’ai réussi à accomplir et j’en ressens beaucoup de satisfaction.

8 Assurez-vous d’avoir un ordinateur portatif convenable.

(Je l’ai appris à la dure!)

9 Vous allez aussi devoir prévoir du temps pour vous à votre horaire. Faire de la place pour du temps « à vous » vous empêchera de vous changer en monstre. C’est important.

10 Et enfin, je vous laisse sur ce petit conseil motivationnel un peu ringard : il n’y a pas de limite d’âge pour retourner apprendre sur les bancs de l’école. N’ayez donc crainte d’aspirer à de plus grandes choses.

y nature, co-ops are collaborative environments, so the 120,000 squarefoot space that spans five levels for this consumer’s collective needed to follow suit. The results are befitting: a bright and vibrant interior that promotes interaction, fosters activity, and is a showcase for some of the best practices in responsible building design.

Founded in 1971, the retailer that sells outdoor recreation gear and clothing exclusively to its collective has since expanded to 3.9 million members, with 18 stores in six provinces and more on the way. MEC’s new Vancouver headquarters is home to 400 employees.

The interiors were kept bright and open to allow natural light to flow through the space. Colour was injected in a variety of spaces and in bold, colourful seating that adds the vibrancy and energy that’s reflective of MEC’s culture.

Wood elements like the white-washed wood ceilings and floors, and the timber structural systems bring warmth; large expanses of glass allow the space to still feel open and airy.

The project’s lead interior designer and an associate at Proscenium Architecture + Interiors, Kerri Shinkewski, IDIBC, IDC, created a space for

Fondée en 1971, cette coop de vente au détail qui fournit de l’équipement et des vêtements de plein air exclusivement à son collectif a depuis atteint 3,9 millions de membres, est dotée de 18 magasins dans six provinces, et compte en ouvrir d’autres sous peu. Les nouveaux quartiers généraux de MEC de Vancouver accueillent 400 employés.

On a décidé de garder les intérieurs ouverts et clairs pour permettre à la lumière naturelle d’inonder les lieux. Here are some of the ways her design reflects the company’s health, well-being, and sustainability philosophies.

ACTIVITY

The brand’s goal is to inspire Canadians to be active outdoors, and they’ve started at home. In late 2009, Shinkewski and her team helped MEC with the site selection process. The location of the new facility was picked in large part for its proximity to rapid transit and bike routes.

With secure bike parking for 128 and a locker room with showers, employees are encouraged to bike to work. “Staff keeps active throughout the workday with in-house spinning and yoga classes, a multipurpose gym room, and a curved bouldering wall,” says Shinkewski.

WELLNESS

A narrow floor plate and an extensive use of glazing and sun control were instrumental in providing natural lighting to work spaces – an important component of the lighting strategy. Exterior sunshades and motorized blinds offer glare control, while operable windows allow staff to access fresh air at their desks.

Noise control and privacy are a concern in an open office environment. Shinkewski and her team carefully arranged departments so there is little to no need for people to walk through other departments.

Interaction is maintained through interspersed, open meeting areas. Collaboration within departments is facilitated with furniture tailored to each department’s needs, but can also be reconfigured as needed.

A rooftop patio and garden space features fruit trees and planter boxes for growing seasonal produce.

GREEN INNOVATION

Reducing the building’s environmental footprint was one of the main drivers of the design. Through the use of green technology and sustainable materials, the building was designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

“The building’s high-performing wood construction was selected for its renewability,” says Shinkewski. “And with more than 1 million board feet of lumber used, it’s the largest use of wood in a contemporary building in Vancouver.”

The building’s advanced lighting and air-control systems make MEC 70% more energy efficient than a conventional office building.

INNOVATION VERTE Réduire l’empreinte écologique du bâtiment a été l’un des principaux facteurs d’entraînement du design. Grâce à l’utilisation de technologies écologiques et de matériaux durables, l’édifice a été conçu de manière à obtenir la certification LEED Platine. « On a choisi la construction en bois à haute performance en raison de son caractère renouvelable, indique Mme Shinkewski. Et avec plus d’un million de pieds-planche, cela constitue la plus grande utilisation de bois dans un édifice contemporain à Vancouver. » Les systèmes d’éclairage et de contrôle de l’air rendent l’édifice de MEC 70 % plus écoénergétique qu’un immeuble de bureaux classique.

odern, pretty and sophisticated – perhaps much like the young, trend-conscious women who shop the boutique – describes this feminine and playful approach to luxury retail design.

Located in an upscale Vancouver shopping mall, Blubird’s new flagship was developed to grow the brand and allow for additional future locations. Box Interior Design principal, H. Jay Brooks, IDIBC, IDC, created just that: a boutique that could compete against well-established, luxury chain stores for premium leases.

Simple lines and gentle colours adorn the space, and the brand’s signature blue colour is used strategically throughout as a subtle branding element. Velvet-wrapped hang rails, bronze fixtures and backlit drapery are some of the custom features of the 2,150 square-foot space, inclusive of ‘back of the house’ storage.

Soft white walls and bleached oak shelving create a confident yet discrete environment.

“The materials we selected have a European influence to reflect the origins of the merchandise,” says Brooks. For whimsy and lightness, the palette is enhanced with polished brass, crystal, and clear acrylic.

Brooks and his team recently won a prestigious provincial award of excellence for Blubird’s design. Here are some of the challenges they encountered along the way and how they were solved.

PROBLEM How do you minimize the ‘bowling alley effect’ of a long and narrow tenant space?

SOLUTION Separate zones create defined

spaces within the boutique. A shop-in-shop cosmetics section close to the cash desk is one zone, while a custom metal and acrylic dividing screen acts as storage and clearly defines another. The 20-foot-long bowling alley was transformed into a ‘runway’ storage bunk.

“It’s essential that the customer has enough room to easily flow through the space. This ‘buffer space’ also encourages them to explore the full depth of the store with a sense of discovery,” says Brooks. “The design must support the sales process, allowing the staff to sell a merchandise story to clientele, rather than just one garment at a time.”

PROBLEM How do you showcase multiple clothing, beauty, and accessory lines in such a small space?

SOLUTION The displays were designed with

just enough space between them to honour the high-end merchandise, but with enough density to make the space fun and youthful. “We approached material selection with the idea that they needed to be quiet and form the backdrop to the colourful and expressive merchandise,” says Brooks. He calls it “curated clutter”, where the merchandise is organized so that it imparts the tone and quality of the goods.

Modular hang rails line the perimeter of the space. Open brass and mirror shelves are used for folded garments, while oak shelving holds jeans. The illuminated cases for beauty products and freestanding jewellery vitrines add visual interest.

Une section de cosmétiques de type « boutique dans une boutique » près du comptoir-caisse devient l’une de ces zones, avec son écran sur mesure en métal et en acrylique qui sert de rangement tout en définissant une autre zone.

On a transformé l’allée de quilles de 20 pieds de longueur en « piste de défilé » sous laquelle se logent aussi des bacs d’entreposage. « Il est essentiel que les clientes aient suffisamment de place pour se mouvoir aisément dans les lieux. Cet “espace tampon” les encourage également à aller à la découverte de la totalité du magasin, indique M. Brooks. SOLUTION Les designers ont conçu les présentoirs en prévoyant tout juste suffisamment d’espace entre eux pour respecter le caractère haut de gamme de la marchandise, mais avec la densité voulue pour que les lieux projettent une image jeune et plaisante. « Notre approche du choix des matériaux a suivi l’idée voulant que ceux-ci se devaient d’être suffisamment effacés pour servir d’écrin à la marchandise colorée et expressive », rapporte H. Jay Brooks. C’est ce qu’il appelle « un désordre organisé », où la marchandise est présentée de telle manière qu’elle permette au ton et à la qualité des articles de se démarquer.

PROBLEM How do you enhance the idea of shopping as a social experience?

SOLUTION At the back of the store is a

glamorous ‘boudoir’ dressing room. Generous private rooms with a glossy white crocodile wallcovering open onto a lounge, where friends can gather. A three-way mirror, metallic leather ottoman, and whimsical tassel ceiling lights round out the space. “Feature garments are hung symmetrically on the dressing room walls to add to the feeling of being in a dreamy, private dressing room, and encourage impulse shopping – these garments fly off the shelves!” says Brooks.

PROBLEM Blubird is located in a shopping mall. How do you encourage passersby to visit the store?

SOLUTION Bright white walls allow the

merchandise to stand out, and uplifting music creates a vibrant atmosphere that encourages people to come inside.

Various lighting techniques create an energizing feel. Adjustable LED lamps are used on the sales floor, linear LED showcase lights illuminate merchandise, backlit mirrors in the dressing rooms make customers look great, and signature tassel pendants add a soft glow.

hange is universal in human nature. We evolve and we grow, and we are never static. In the corporate world, financial fluxes, real estate developments, technological advances, and organizational restructuring may all create the need for change. And sometimes that need means hiring a professional to help facilitate the process.

To some degree, interior designers deal with change on every workplace project. The company’s needs and wants are evaluated and a new environment is shaped based on those desired functions. It’s also pretty common for organizations to use office relocation as a time to implement change.

Ottawa-based workplace strategist Meredith Thatcher believes interior designers and change management consultants should

While both types of professionals are skilled at taking a leader’s vision and turning it into reality, each process takes a different course of action, with a unified end goal: successful organizational change. Here’s a look at how these change management processes intersect.

Shauna Pringle, IDIBC, IDC, and Associate Interior Designer at SSDG Interiors in Vancouver would agree. “It’s important to keep employees informed and engaged,” she says. “People fear the unknown, and when information is withheld or not properly communicated, underground rumours can start replacing the truth.”

Dedicated ‘change managers’ from within an organization can help curb rumours and keep people moving forward. With consistent messaging and a clear demonstration of the changes, enthusiasm is generated about the new direction. This can ease the transition for employees who are not yet onboard.

Meredith Thatcher outlines three phases in her process to help manage a transition, the first being preparation, where she assesses an organization’s readiness by conducting initial interviews. “The existing system needs to be challenged to make room for the new way of operating,” she says.

Once the team is aligned, Thatcher creates a strategy,

or framework – her second phase. “I do a lot of coaching during this time,” she says. “In order to make change successful, people need to understand how the changes will affect them.” Focus groups, videos, surveys, competitions, and authentic conversations can aid employees in feeling that they’ve participated and contributed to the process.

“Once engaged, employees will start to believe in the new direction.” Thatcher’s third and final stage is delivering and reinforcing the program. Here she works closely with the leadership to ensure the changes are consistently incorporated into daily operations.

Golder Associates, an international engineering firm, had outgrown their Vancouver office and were spread over three buildings. With the goal of housing everyone under one roof, and for a work environment that promoted greater collaboration and interaction among teams, they moved to a new 135,000 square-foot space.

Not surprisingly, thoughtful workplace design can be a powerful tool for supporting organizational strategies.

An early survey conducted by Pringle and her team revealed that staff were concerned about the reduction in the number of private offices. “As more organizations move to open spaces, we’re commonly challenged to maintain

Ce n’est une surprise pour personne qu’un aménagement des lieux de travail bien conçu puisse se révéler être un puissant outil pour appuyer les stratégies organisationnelles.

Un sondage préliminaire mené par Mme Pringle et son équipe a révélé que les membres du personnel s’inquiétaient de la réduction du nombre de bureaux privés. « Comme de plus en plus d’entreprises se tournent vers des bureaux à aires ouvertes, nous sommes souvent confrontés au défi de préserver les espaces ouverts tout en prévoyant des lieux pour le travail où il faut de la concentration », souligne Mme Pringle.

Une autre préoccupation soulevée par les employés était la quantité de lumière naturelle pénétrant à l’intérieur de l’édifice. En redistribuant les bureaux privés dans la partie intérieure, on a pu maximiser la lumière naturelle aux postes de travail. « Lorsque les employés sont heureux, ils sont plus engagés envers leur travail et lorsqu’ils sont plus engagés, cela signifie que la productivité augmente, ajoute-t-elle. C’est une situation gagnant-gagnant. »

Her approach often includes the use of quiet workrooms, or zones, and keeping workstations off main traffic patterns.

Another concern expressed by the employees was the amount of inflow of natural light. By re-allocating the private offices to the interior of the space, access to natural light was maximized at the workstations. “When the staff is happy, they are more engaged, and a more engaged staff can mean an increase in productivity,” she says. “It’s a win, win.”

JADIS FRÉQUENTÉ PAR LES COLS BLEUS DE PASSAGE, le rez-dechaussée de l’hôtel historique National Hotel de Calgary a depuis été transformé en restaurant sophistiqué qui rend hommage à son passé coloré.

L’hôtel, qui a été inauguré en 1908, s’était délabré et est demeuré inoccupé pendant de nombreuses années. En 2010, il a subi une rénovation complète de structure où le revêtement de briques jaunes et les fenêtres ont été les seuls éléments préservés de ce bâtiment de style édouardien. À l’intérieur, Sarah Ward de Sarah Ward Interiors a conçu deux espaces distincts qui s’unissent pour devenir l’un des lieux de rencontres sociales les plus courus d’Inglewood : le restaurant The Nash et le Off Cut Bar. The Nash est un reflet chaleureux et invitant de l’élégance et de l’hospitalité hôtelières. Le hall d’entrée assure un accueil grandiose avec son plancher de mosaïque, un énorme lustre victorien en laiton et une cloison de verre miroitante. La salle à manger est éclatante et vous attire à l’intérieur en vous faisant passer devant le comptoir de rôtisserie jusqu’à la cuisine ouverte et revêtue de marbre. Une carte surdimensionnée de Calgary dessinée à la main sert de point d’ancrage à la pièce. Les chaises tapissées de lin tissé et les tables faites de bois de récupération ajoutent une touche décontractée à l’endroit alors que les appareils d’éclairage en cristal conçus sur mesure procurent un sentiment d’opulence.

En contraste, le Off Cut Bar tire son inspiration de l’époque de la prohibition — racines plus sombres de cette collectivité. Le bar est situé le long de ce qui est connu comme l’« allée du whisky » qui a servi d’inspiration à Sarah Ward quant au choix des matériaux. The hotel, which opened in 1908, fell into disrepair and sat vacant for many years. In 2010, it underwent a full structural renovation where the yellow brick cladding and windows were the only preserved elements of the Edwardian-style building. Inside, Sarah Ward of Sarah Ward Interiors designed two distinct spaces that unite to become one of Inglewood’s most talked-about gathering spots: The Nash and Off Cut Bar. The Nash is warm and inviting, reflective of elegant hotel hospitality. The entrance lobby provides a grand welcome with its custom mosaic tile floor, a large Victorian brass pendant light and a gleaming glass partition wall. The dining room is bright and draws you in, past the rotisserie bar to the open, marble-clad kitchen. An oversized hand-drawn map of Calgary anchors the room. Chairs upholstered in woven linen and reclaimed wood tables add a casual feel, while custom crystal light fixtures add opulence.

By contrast, Off Cut Bar takes its cues from the prohibition era – the community’s shadier roots. The bar is located along what was known as “whiskey row,” which served as Ward’s inspiration for the materials used. Fumed JO H N GAUC HE R

and height of the vast ceilings. Previously tucked away, the bar was moved forward and made more central, allowing patrons to take in the stunning views of Vancouver’s busy harbour and North Shore Mountains.

To achieve the restaurant’s lounge-like atmosphere, dark and dramatic materials were used. Blackened and aged wood floors, black and gold walls and sculptural wood lighting work together to balance the abundance of natural light. Rich charcoals, hazy greys, and mauves with metallic accents add to the restaurant’s moody feel and keep the scenery at the forefront.

Banquette seating was added to provide intimate niches, and a new private dining room is dual-purposed to host private events and serve as a meeting room. A feature chef’s table is also multi-functional by turning into a breakfast buffet for hotel guests.

The lounge, with its oversized armchairs and fireplace makes for a relaxed, homey setting – not typical of a hotel restaurant.

ARC’s brighter and more open concept space now matches the elegance and style of the rest of this upscale downtown hotel and yet is distinguished enough to stand out for Vancouverites and visitors alike.

toute la longueur du restaurant et la hauteur des vastes plafonds. Précédemment en retrait, le bar a été déplacé vers l’avant pour prendre une place plus centrale d’où les clients peuvent admirer les vues magnifiques sur le port animé de Vancouver et sur les montagnes North Shore qui surplombent la ville.

Pour conférer une atmosphère de bar-salon au restaurant, on a eu recours à des matériaux foncés et d’aspect théâtral.

Des planchers en bois noirci et vieilli, des murs revêtus de noir et de doré, et des appareils d’éclairage sculpturaux en bois s’unissent pour équilibrer l’abondance de lumière naturelle. Des gris anthracite ou fumée intenses et des mauves aux accents métallisés contribuent à l’atmosphère feutrée, tout en laissant la vedette au décor naturel.

On a ajouté des banquettes pour créer des alcôves intimes, et une nouvelle salle à manger privée sert en double emploi à accueillir des événements ou comme salle de réunion. Et la table de chef est elle aussi multifonctionnelle en se transformant en buffet de petit déjeuner pour les clients de l’hôtel.

Le bar-salon, avec son foyer et ses fauteuils surdimensionnés, fait place à un environnement décontracté et douillet, ce qui est inusité pour un restaurant d’hôtel.

Le concept plus lumineux et plus ouvert d’ARC concorde désormais avec l’élégance et le style du reste de cet hôtel haut de gamme du centre-ville tout en se distinguant pour les Vancouvérois et les visiteurs.
