simplified? Oh, yes!
What does that mean? That less money is spent to wear better quality clothing, that you will always have something to wear for any occasion, and no longer will you have a full and unorderly closet but nothing to wear. With personalised ‘capsule’ collections, you can take an ecological approach, reducing the negative impacts of today’s consumerism and fast fashion, which is one of the planet’s greatest polluters.
6
MINIMALISM
T
hough designers such as Vivienne Westwood (“Buy less, choose well”), ‘mademoiselle’ Coco Chanel (“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance”) or Cristóbal Balenciaga (“Elegance is elimination”) made visionary statements decades ago, those guidelines have only in recent years become a well-rounded fashion philosophy. A fashion microtrend is now evident, with the launching of smaller ‘capsule’ and ‘cruise’ (sub)collections.
Simply the best
‘CAPSULE’ COLLECTIONS This term was coined in 1970s by Susie Faux, owner of London’s Wardrobe boutique. Her idea was to help the modern working woman always look stylish with minimum effort by creating ‘capsule’ collections by following 2 basic rules: 1) selecting pieces that could be worn in different ways (such as a camisole as a top under a blazer, a short, ruffled skirt that also works as a top, tights instead of nylons under a tunic …), 2) the selected pieces mutually complement and can be paired with one another. This way, a minimum amount of clothing can be turned into an impressive number of fashion combinations.
“
SIMPLICITY IS THE ULTIMATE FORM OF SOPHISTICATION”, CLAIMED THE GENIUS LEONARDO DA VINCI 7
The entire idea is based on the approach that a woman’s closet should be based on a maximum of about 20 pieces that form the backbone of good styling and that all work well together, regardless of personal preferences. Among the first to promote this philosophy was the queen of American minimalism, Donna Karan, who once said that every woman should have seven key basic pieces in her closet: camisole, tights, skirt, pants, blazer, cashmere sweater and a shawl. When we add shoes, bags, jewellery and other accessories, this creates the silhouette of our own personal ‘capsule’ collection, with pieces that are timeless classics that almost never go out of style. Once you have created a reliable foundation and the pieces function equally well in various dress-code situations (business meeting, coffee with friends, afternoon cocktail or evening outing), then you can shake things up with the occasional avantgarde or trendy article.
Less is more This philosophy is deeply connected to the ecologically acceptable and sustainable trend entitled ‘less is more’. With this approach, we can buy better quality clothing, instead of accumulating cheaper items in the closet. Many ‘mass brands’ and ‘streetstyle brands’ have imposed a dynamic of 52 microtrends at the annual level, with new goods available in shops each week. However, the constant purchase of new, cheap and lesser quality items could ultimately cost more than acquiring your own, sophisticated ‘capsule’ collection. Nor need we mention the ecological catastrophe such a megalomaniac approach implies.
MINIMALISM
Huffington Post published that an unbelievable 80 billion items of clothing are produced in the world each year. On the other hand, especially amongst younger generations, one-season trendy clothing and fashion accessories intended to be worn fewer than five times are tossed into the garbage on average just 35 days after purchase, to make room in the closet for new, ‘fresh’ clothing.
Basic instinct Another study went one step further to calculate mathematically that the ideal wardrobe should contain 37 ‘basic’ pieces, and even provided a specific list. The list included articles such as a light-coloured down jacket, cardigan, grey army jacket, blazer, midi-dress, dark jeans, black leather motorcycle jacket, ‘boyfriend’ white shirt, tunic, open-toed sandals, Converse, Birkenstocks, Chelsea boot, etc. The point was not to blindly follow the list, but instead to serve as inspiration and as a reminder of what should be in one’s ‘capsule’ collection, and as a shopping guide for which famous pieces work so well together, while never going out of style.
Slow fashion This gave rise to the development of the revolutionary mini-movement called ‘slow fashion’, which shares certain principles with the similar movement ‘slow food’. The principles of these two movements are virtually identical – selecting high quality items, ensuring their ‘consumption’ is environmentally friendly and abides by the rules of ‘fair play’, meaning affordable prices for consumers and just conditions of production and payment for producers. The term ‘slow fashion’ was coined in 2007 in an article comparing these two movements in The Ecologist by Kate Fletcher. She listed some of the characteristics of ‘slow fashion’ as the redesign of old clothes, buying from smaller, local producers, homemade and DIY clothing and jewellery, and buying longer-lasting clothing.
Sweet dreams are made of this Ultimately, capsule collections give us more time and energy for the important things in life, as less time and thought is given to what to wear and how to put together fashion combinations, shopping, and washing, maintaining and sorting clothing, shoes and closets, leaving us with more time and money to achieve our dreams.
MAKE UP: BE MORE WITH LESS The base of any good make-up look is trusty foundation, black mascara, red and neutral lipstick, shaded eye shadow and pale pink blush. The remainder of your beauty needs can be simply resolved with the super popular ‘beauty boxes’. These are palettes of different ‘mini’ products that have a number of comparative benefits, can be mixed and matched, and used for various purposes (e.g. creamy blush can also be applied as lipstick or eye shadow). One of the first mini perfume ‘capsule’ collection was created by Karl Lagerfeld, and today these are the trademark of numerous brands.

TODAY REUSING ITEMS PURCHASED A YEAR AGO, THOUGH IN A DIFFERENT WAY, SHOWS GOOD TASTE AND STYLE
5 RULES
to follow when creating your own ‘capsule’ collection:
1
Select two to three neutral colour tones for your base, such as black, grey, beige, navy, olive ... Accessories can be in shades of the base colours, while several larger, key pieces should be in more prominent shades, and best in the complementary pair of the base colour. Dark colours make you look thinner, while lighter colours widen the figure.
2
While shopping for clothing, pay attention to your body shape. Stylists advise that women with small breasts should choose shirts, tops and blouses with ruffles on the chest, while those with wide hips should wear pieces that widen the figure in the shoulders, such as blazers with shoulder pads, as this visually narrows the waist. Women with short legs should choose high-waisted skirts and pants to visually extend the legs.
3
Redheads look great in all shades of purple, while pale women look best in warm, golden tones.
Classic tailoring and patterns should dominate. Bell bottoms come in and out of fashion, while the pencil skirt will always be in. Polka dots, stripes, tartan and flower patters are fashion classics. A plain white T-shirt, silk blouse and pumps are pieces that you will likely never throw away.
5
4
Pay attention to fabrics. Thanks to new technology, elastic fabrics are now available that contour to the body, and fabrics can be washed at lower temperatures thus extending their lifespan. Non-iron fabrics can be packed in a suitcase without worrying of wrinkles.

Soon trendy clothing will no longer just be about cuts and styles, but about how much and which raw materials and energy have been consumed for us to wear them
D
o you know that it takes 250 litres of water to make one shirt?!! We may adore fashion, but unless we preserve the Earth, it’s unlikely that fashion will mean much in the battle for survival. The good news is that technologists responsible for the materials that thrill us every year with their lightness, colours and comfort, have already found great solutions.
Power of recycling There is tremendous potential in the fact that Americans throw away 16 million tonnes of fabrics each year, as recognized by Stacy Flynn, textile and apparel specialist. Just 16% of this amount is recycled, and this is an excellent base of new production, which was embraced by Levi’s immediately after the announcement of their 2030 fibre strategy. Their production uses 98% less water than cotton production, and releases 90% less carbon monoxide than polyester production, with better dying potential than those fabrics, and a 30% reduced impact on the environment. The start of mass production is planned for next year.
Cellulose is the new cotton Flynn is certain that denim lovers will love this material, which contains very long strands of cellulose, making it resilient, long-lasting and recyclable. Other companies too are starting to work on ecological innovations that will shift fashion in an environmentally friendly direction. Spinnova has developed a process that simply transforms cellulose into a textile fibre without the use of harmful chemicals. The idea to combine methods for paper production with those used by spiders to spin their webs first came to Juha Salmela, co-founder of Spinnova, after listening to a lecture about spiders.

FUTURE
Challenges of eco fashion Natural wood fibres obtained from renewable resources are the foundation of the Lenzing Group in taking responsibility for the future of the planet. The Tencel Luxe fibres are suitable for making fabrics with a luxurious appearance, silky surface and lovely drape. They can be mixed with wool and silk, with lasting colours that give designers the opportunity for even more daring expression. The EcoVero fibre from Lenzing, as a unique substitute for viscose fibres, are produced in an ecologically
NEW MATERIALS Due to the world’s growing population and the need to use land for food production, the textile industry is turning to new materials that do not require massive quantities of water and land. Hemp fibres are resilient, have antibacterial properties and are a natural air conditioning system. Stinging nettle fibres have similar qualities to hemp. The Taiwan company Singtex is using special technology to combine the fibres of ground coffee with fabric polymers that include UV protection, fast drying and natural anti-odour qualities.
suitable way, offering suitable information on the origin of the fibres themselves.
ION WASH IonTech uses the power of the natural ionisation process to remove impurities more effectively without high temperatures or additional chemicals. The detergent dissolves better in the water, allowing the cleaning solution to penetrate your laundry evenly. The result is 30% more stains removed, even at low temperatures. IonTech also prevents the deposit of limescale on the heater which prolongs the washing machine’s useful life. IonTech is a new feature, developed in Gorenje.
Designer’s view of the future Ethical and sustainable fashion was a hot topic at the most recent London Fashion Week. Stella McCartney has spoken out at Vogue’s Forces of Fashion to advocate new technologies and batting pollution caused by old-fashioned methods. Nonprofit organisations such as Sustainable Angle are supporting projects that contribute to reducing the impacts of the fashion industry on the environment.

Have you ever heard of the Sick Building Syndrome? In 1984, the World Health Organization (WHO) listed this syndrome as a cause of many health problems. The good news is that indoor air pollution can be resolved in a relatively elegant way. 12

I
ndoor air quality is affected by numerous factors, such as oxygen content in the air, humidity, share of harmful compounds, and unpleasant smells. In order to breathe in fresh and oxygen-rich air, we first need to regularly clean the rooms we spend our time in.
AIR PURIFYING PLANTS
Fragrant vacuuming Regularly change the bag or clean (and if needed disinfect) the integrated cannister in your vacuum cleaner. Add a few drops of lavender oil or a few sprigs of dried lavender in the vacuum bag, to remove unpleasant smells during vacuuming. An excellent solution is a steam cleaner, which removes up to 99% of germs and bacteria. It is important to retain an optimal air humidity level (50–60%). If the air is too dry or too humid, consider using an air conditioner to humidify or remove moisture from the air.
Some of the plants from the NASA list
ALOE VERA Excellent in removing harmful chemicals from the air, especially those from cleaning products or after painting your walls. If cared for properly (they love a lot of sun), they should not show any brown spots on the leaves, which is a sign that there are more harmful compounds in the air than the leaves can absorb.
Natural solutions Try essential oils in lamps. Ravensara is one of the most potent antiviral essential oils, and one of the strongest activators of the immune system, alongside the essential oils of rosemary, oregano, cinnamon, bay leaf, tea tree oil and eucalyptus. Add four to five drops into a fragrance lamp or spray bottle to enrich the air with their beneficial molecules.
Pay attention! There are also special devices that use filters and ionisers to purify the air. Benzene is a chemical compound found in numerous products that surround us (plastics, paints and lacquers), and it can cause headaches, fatigue, circulation problems …
SPATIFILUM Neutralises harmful toxic gases such as carbon monoxide. It needs a little light and a lot of water so it is ideal for the shady parts of a room. Take care that it is not in a draught, and that it is out of reach of pets, as this plant can be poisonous for animals.
AREKA PALM
A scent-free kitchen
Neutralises the negative effects of the most commonly appearing compounds in the home. One potted palm produces the optimum amount of oxygen for one person, so adapt the number of plants accordingly. It also adds moisture, so this is an ideal ecological replacement for an electric humidifier.
In order to eliminate unpleasant smells from the kitchen, be sure to use your range hood. Modern day range hoods are almost silent. Don’t forget to regularly ventilate all rooms and introduce plants to purify and oxygenate the air. NASA has proven that certain plant species can remove up to 87% of all air pollutants over a 24-hour cycle.

TO GET A COMBI
STEAM OVEN
STEAM
1
Steam cooking is one of the healthiest cooking methods. Heat is transferred to the food much faster, so instead of drying out the dish, the steam keeps it moist, more delicious and nutritious. Steaming preserves important minerals and vitamins, whilst making sure the food retains its full and intensive flavour, texture and colour. Furthermore, the food stays extremely juicy and tender. A delicious and hearty meal no longer requires a heap of herbs and spices or more than a few drops of oil. Instead, tasty food can be made without any fat at all, and the food can finally shine in all its glory of natural ingredients.
COMBINATION OF STEAM AND HOT AIR Combi steam ovens offer steam or hot air, or a combination of the two. Different dishes can be cooked at the same time without mixing aroma and flavour. This is perfect for those who like their dishes crisp. Steam doesn‘t dryout the roast or bread, giving them a perfect crunchy outside.
2 26
PERFECT CHOICE
Combi steam ovens have been around for nearly 30 years and are no longer just found in professional kitchens. Pricewise they’ve never been more affordable and homeowners are beginning to learn what chefs have long known - the beauty of steam cooking. They’re a great addition to any kitchen, so let’s see what the fuss is all about.
SOUS VIDE
3
Among other useful options, combined steam ovens support the low-temperature cooking method called sous vide, which means food is vacuum-sealed and then placed in a steam environment at low heat to preserve nutrients, minerals and vitamins, keeping the food heavenly moist. This French method is gaining popularity because of how simply it always delivers restaurant-grade food, at home. Sous vide is an excellent choice for all vegetables and meat, as they are always cooked to perfection, leaving them with an almost original flavour and tender texture. The sous vide technique makes it possible for steaks to be cooked evenly to the exact level of cooking desired, retaining their own moisture and not losing flavors or being overcooked.
“
NO LONGER JUST PART OF A PROFESSIONAL’S KITCHEN, COMBI STEAM OVENS MAKE A GREAT CHOICE FOR ANY KITCHEN
6
DISINFECTING A combi steam oven allows you to disinfect baby bottles and jam jars safely and with ease, so no worries there if you are really into food preservation or just a fresh parent looking for a little simplification.
7 4 8 * 5 REHEATING
If you are on a tight schedule and preparing meals in advance, you will be delighted by the fact that reheating food using steam preserves and restores moisture, making it taste just like freshly prepared. Steam gently rehydrates the food and brings it back to its delicious life.
DEFROSTING
Defrosting in a combi steam oven is simpler and quicker than defrosting at room temperature. Food will defrost gently and carefully without losing its taste or colour.
27
DOUGH PROOFING
You can also make bread at home, much more simply and easily in half the normal time. A combi steam oven is ideal for proofing dough. The required time is normally cut in half because of steam and even heat distribution. Homemade bread is something we all long for, but don’t have time to get around to it. This is your chance to start, because you know that there is nothing better than a warm loaf of freshly baked homemade bread and its divine aroma.
GORENJE COMBI STEAM OVEN
Technically this shouldn’t be here, but just to make your life simpler, we want to tell you that all seven points above are possible in Gorenje combi steam oven.
INTERIOR
K
itchen organization is dictated by the process of food preparation – from storage, washing up, processing and preparation of food items, to cooking. It is important to abide by the working triangle made up by the refrigerator, sink and stove. The sum of the distances between those three main work centres should not be greater than 6.6 m, as this is the zone where the most steps are made during meal preparation. Preparation of meals is in one direction, and cleaning and washing up after the meal is
in the other, so a good layout of elements facilitates and accelerates the process. The upper or hanging elements should be shallower than the lower ones, to enable unhindered work on the countertop. Drawers with a mechanism that enables them to be pulled out completely enables better visibility of the contents and accessibility through the entire depth of the drawer. The lower drawers should enable better visibility of contents, and their advantage is that they require less bending over. Installation of a built-in oven is recommended at a greater height, as this reduces the need for bending. Safety in the kitchen is exceptionally important, particularly in families with small children. For that purpose, kitchens are also available with rounded edges, rounded countertop corners, and ergonomically shaped handles. All high elements should be affixed to the wall to prevent them from falling over.
“
IN MORE AND MORE OPEN LAYOUT SPACES, KITCHEN MATERIALS ARE SELECTED TO MATCH OR ENHANCE THE REST OF THE FURNITURE COUNTERTOPS NOW AND THEN The selection of countertops is based on your cooking habits and frequency of use. If you decide for a wooden countertop, you can choose between smooth and textured surfaces for an elegant or rustic look. Cracks and knots in the materials were once considered flaws, but contemporary design treats them as desired aesthetic details.
NATURAL MATERIALS Granite is a natural material – a mixture of different types of crystals and rock that gives it exceptional hardness. It tolerates cleaning liquids as well. Natural materials (concrete, clay, mortar, chalk) give a designer look to any kitchen. There is increasing demand for quartz countertops (due to their resilience), and those with a metal finish.
28
HOW TO
design your kitchen Functionality and practicality – these are the two main characteristics of a well organized kitchen that meets the needs and way of life of the family, above all making things easier and saving time.
SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS Don’t design a kitchen that’s bigger than you need it to be. Incorporate efficient design drawers rather than cupboards below bench-top height as they are more efficient for space. Buy energy efficient appliances, choose eco-friendly flooring options such as cork and linoleum, use recycled countertops (recycled glass or sustainable wood). Replace non-stick cookware with stainless steel or cast iron, harsh cleaning solutions with the homemade ones, plastic utensils with reusable items, packaged foods with fresh food, kitchen lights with energy efficient bulbs (CFLs or LEDs).

WARM GLOW
OF A HOT TREND
An ‘industrial’ interior design style has shifted from public to private spaces, making bronze a ‘must have’ touch.
M
etal tones, especially shades of bronze, are leading the vintage trend in interior and exterior design. Bronze is an alloy of copper and it’s so on trend now, as a colour also in fashion, cosmetics, music and art. In addition to complete design solutions, such as bronze kitchens and bathrooms, this trend is most seen in details in this shade, which is just as common in a matt and shiny finish.
Fifty shades of copper The most desirable details are lamps in this colour, like standing lamps or hanging lamps, most of which feature
clean lines and design, but are very effective in space thanks to the smart designer investments in polished surfaces. This gives that desirable warm orange glow that fills the entire room with a pleasant, relaxing tone. Other bronze-coated items are also sought after, household appliances, coffee machines, metal spice boxes,
31
candle holders, vases, teapots, plates, cutlery and other details that stand out equally well on a light or dark background. Large, dominant bronze pieces have a very powerful effect in a room, such as retro refrigerators, bathtubs or sinks.
Social networks An endless source of inspiration for decorating the home in bronze details and other hot projects in this season’s trendiest colour can be found on social networks. Kitchens with copper or bronze handles, and even entire work surfaces are thrilling to see, as are tables,
chairs and armchairs with copper legs, and bathroom cabinets and mirrors with bronze trim. There are rows of copper lights on the ceiling and numerous other inspired designer solutions, such as the famous bronze lamps by Tom Dixon, a self-taught British designer specializing in lighting, furniture and accessories.

Let’s get messy! Bread and circuses in the kitchen!
A mess and the kitchen are often associated, but does that mess have anything to do with creativity? More than we think! The cook who adds something of their own into every recipe has a different understanding of how the play of ingredients will awaken the senses and stimulate the imagination. Even at the earliest ages, it develops the personality in different directions ‌ 32
KIDS IN ACTION
L
et’s be honest, a perfectly clean kitchen can only be found in home where there is rarely any cooking. Families with children are a whole different category, as young ones need diverse nutrition, and so there is a daily need to cook. Once the kids grab the wooden spoon, the kitchen becomes a battleground, classroom, workshop, source of inspiration and ideas. Don’t let cleaning the heart of the home get you down, because messy play, in the kitchen or elsewhere, gives your child the opportunity to try something new, and to explore.
Tasty games There are no right and wrong messy games, each has equal meaning in the child’s development. The culinary game that leaves behind an unthinkable mess in your kitchen can also be very tasty. Begin with the most basic of meals. Bread is the most basic, a beloved food for people around the world since the start of agriculture and the growing of the first cereals. The two main ingredients – flour and water – create a dough that becomes a tool in the child’s hands. Mixing develops the fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
How to make leopard bread Here’s what you need: • 380 g bread flour • 30 g sugar • 1/2 tsp fine salt • 7 g dry yeast • 150 ml milk (use cold milk from fridge) • 30 ml oil For brown patches • 15 g cocoa powder 1. In a stand mixer, add in bread flour, sugar, salt, yeast and milk, mix into dough using low speed, kneading untill smooth. Add in butter, then knead till dough is shiny and smooth. Remove 3/4 of plain dough, place in another clean bowl and set aside to proof till doubled in size. 2. Add the cocoa powder into the remaining plain dough and mix well. 3. Roll the dough into small balls. Use a rolling pin, take the chocolate dough and roll into flat oval shape. Then roll it up like a jelly roll. 4. Use a rolling pin, roll the plain dough out so that it is large enough and wrap around
chocolate dough, ensuring it’s fully. 5. Stack all dough randomly in the prepared loaf tin. Set aside to rise for about 1 hour. 6. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180 °C for 30 minutes. Once done, remove bread from the tin and cool before slicing. Then, admire and enjoy! It can be simplified! Prepare the leopard bread in the bread maker. 1. Put ingredients in the bread maker. Choose DOUGH. 2. Form the dough as described above. 3. Stack all dough randomly in the bread maker. Choose BAKE.
Smell, watch, touch! Even just weighing out ingredients or measuring the necessary quantities using a spoon and cup, adding, stirring, pouring will develop hand-eye coordination. Materials, in this case dough, give the child a chance to show its creativity, to plan and to think about different phases. Though you might have planned to bake a loaf of bread, it might turn into several buns of different shapes. Let the kids design the bread themselves, touching, smelling and observing the textures and colours. Even the smallest children know how important food is for people, they know it helps them grow and that if they eat well, they will be healthy. And that health opens the door to new games, as they can head out among their peers at preschools, where the fun is guaranteed! Even in the kitchen corner, which every preschool has for good reason.
WAKE UP TO THE SMELL OF FRESH BREAD Gorenje bread makers come out on top in terms of bread appearance, weight, size, and tenderness and texture of the crumb. In several tests, the quality in the baking process was confirmed. The simple controls suit complete beginners and seasoned bakers alike as it offers recipes with preset kneading, rising, and baking procedures. More demanding user can also fully adjust the baking programs to suit special wishes and needs according to your own recipe and use the appliance to bake favourite bread just the way you like it. And when you like it. The bread makers allow delaying the start of the baking process by up to 13 hours. This means you can wake up to the smell of freshly baked bread.

STIMULATING ACTIVITIES
KIDS &
fun chores learning and logical thinking The value of household chores has always been underestimated. This might be because the outcome of the work quickly disappears, and soon one needs to start all over again. This is also one of the reasons why men tend to avoid chores. However, this is an exercise ground that every parent should consider more carefully – as situations and activities that teach children and awaken their creative processes.
CHILDREN WHO PERFORM HOUSEHOLD CHORES WITH THEIR FATHERS OBTAIN MORE POSITIVE BENEFITS, ARE LESS WITHDRAWN AND MORE SOCIAL, ACCORDING TO A RECENT STUDY
2-3 • Range toys • Fill pet’s food dish • Put clothes in hamper • Wipe up spills • Dust • Pile books and magazines
TEACHING AND ENCOURAGING CREATIVE PROCESSES
A
stimulating environment in which children develop their own capabilities through their own activities without direct teaching was the principle developed by the Italian physician and teacher Marie Montesorri. Using those guidelines, household chores can be a game, and with just a few words, children can learn about the ties between cause and effect.
Sorting plastic plates onto one another is similar to playing with blocks or hideaway toys that can be placed one into another or can be used to build a tower. The dishes you have at home won’t give such a perfect form, but sorting them will enable children to reach a conclusion quickly. Too many dishes of the same size in the same pile will fall over. A true challenge and opportunity to learn more for future builders.
STIMULATING LOGIC AND RECOGNISING COLOUR AND SHAPES Sorting socks into pairs after washing is a great opportunity to stimulate logic and learn to recognize colours and shapes. Sorting cutlery (except knives) into the drawer helps children to understand the similarities and differences between objects.
THINKING ABOUT NUTRITIONAL QUALITY Holiday baking is a beloved tradition, but also an opportunity to teach and encourage creative processes, and should find its way into your family schedule more often. Grocery shopping is also a good way to stimulate learning and creativity. Choosing fruits and vegetables will stimulate the child to think about how they can create animal shapes out of individual pieces. For example, an eggplant could form the body of a hedgehog, while a potato and a carrot together resemble a giraffe. What is larger or smaller, heavier or lighter, can all be subjects of conversation at the grocery store. Situations can be used to discuss the quality and composition of foods, but within limit. Explain that fruits are loaded with vitamins that are healthy and make us feel better, which will stimulate the child to try different foods and to consider the importance of a healthy diet.
OPTIMAL Older kids can help to SORTING load the dishwasher. You can either discuss with the child about how to position the dishes to save space, or let the child come to their own best solution through trial and error. CONSERVING Explain to the RESOURCES child that good positioning is important to ensure that each dish will be properly washed, and to save water by washing as many pieces at once. Let children care for the plants in the household. By regularly watering and caring for plants, children will learn about the value of water for life and the need to conserve resources.

PROOFS OF QUALITY
With the Gorenje WaveActive new generation of appliances, all functions and programs in past generations positively evaluated by customers have been retained and improved, with numerous innovations added. Efficient inverter motors (Inverter PowerDrive) are built into the WaveActive appliances to achieve the best energy consumption levels, extend the lifespan of appliances and reduce noise. They come with a 10-year warranty. The WaveActive dryer has new Speed40 programme. It means your laundry can be dry in just 40 minutes. SteamRefresh is a 25 minute steam treatment perfect for wrinkle and odour removal.
ADDITIONAL STEAM TREATMENT REHYDRATE THE FIBRES, MAKING CLOTHES MUCH SMOOTHER AND LESS WRINKLED, THUS MINIMIZING OR EVEN ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR IRONING HOW IT WORKS IonTech charges the air in the dryer with negative ions that penetrate deep into the fabric to eliminate allergens, impurities and bacteria. SteamTech adds steam towards the end of the drying process, drying in a more natural way. Laundry comes out of the machine fresher and less creased. Fitted with sensor technology and a heat pump, the Gorenje WaveActive dryers ensure fast and environmentally efficient laundry drying. Heatpump driers are safe for drying all types of garments, even delicate ones.
38
A UNIQUE ADVANTAGE ... ... lies in the drum: Gorenje washers and dryers are the only ones in the world to feature the innovative and unique wave shape of the drum and ribs for gentle and efficient washing or drying of even the most sensitive laundry. Meanwhile, the larger drum allows more space for laundry to tumble, breathe and become softened. Gorenje washers come in 4 different depths to cover all the needs and the whole lineup was rewarded with the prestigious Red Dot award.
PROOFS OF QUALITY
DESIGN FOLLOWS ERGONOMY
THE NEWEST GORENJE WAVEACTIVE WASHING MACHINES AND DRYERS WON THE COVETED RED DOT DESIGN AWARDS FOR PRODUCT DESIGN
In the design of washers and dryers, the same elements are applied so that these two appliances have a harmonious and identical appearance. Modularity and logics of use are the main guiding principles in the machine construction. Ergonomics perfected in previous generations are used, with the door handle on the top side (pull to open system) to avoid unnecessary bending. The larger door enables better access to laundry. For those wondering why dryers mostly have a closed door, the answer lies in the larger space allocated to the filtration system.
HUMAN SIMPLICITY
DESIGN DEPARTMENT UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
Highlighted soft lines reflect excellent ergonomics. The slightly tilted control panel offers a better view of the technologically perfected user interface that allows users to simply select the optimum washing or drying program. Also, it offers a better view of the large intuitive touch screen that allows setting additional washing or drying parameters.
The design department is a special story. Here, imagination is mixed with reality, and sketches are revived. Each sketch has its own name and appliances are nicknamed, but designers kept them a secret ;-) However, this department is so creative, funny and innovative that you would want to live in it occasionally.

FANS OF FRESH LAUNDRY Spotlessly clean and gently dry clothes every time In terms of the consequent economic and social changes the introduction of the first washing machine was (and still is) more important than the internet revolution. Probably this is the biggest helper of all when it comes to the household chores. Households typically do 6 to 8 loads per week so it is important to choose a washing machine which is simple to use, gentle with your laundry and efficient with resources. Today’s washing machines and dryers are designed to perform better, using the latest technologies, for always perfect result. The uniquely wave-shaped and spacious drum is the most important for the sensitive treatment of garments. A new technology with the power of natural ionisation can remove impurities more effectively (up to 30%), with lower water temperature and less washing powder. It also prevents the deposit of limescale on the heater which prolongs the machine’s useful life. In the drying process ion technology considerably reduces creasing and maximizes freshness. Steam technology is another advantage of the latest washing machines, which significantly reduces wrinkles, outdoors and bacteria. Your garments will be thoroughly clean, less creased and softer. Your favourite clothes will also be smoother and wrinkle-free by adding an additional steam treatment at the end of the selected drying programme. IonTech / WaveActive / SteamTech

professional achievement Julie & Julia
With a real combination of passion and courage, anything is possible. We will learn this from this fun story about two women in love with cooking and writing, who built their careers in different time periods, but with the same intensive feelings. Julie is in search of something that will take her mind off her disappointing job, and so she challenges herself to cook all 524 recipes in the Julia Child cookbook in one year, and to write about her entire culinary experience in a blog. Child was living in France due to her husband’s work, and she was so thrilled about the French delicacies that she decided to invest a lot of courage and butter into mastering the techniques of one of the world’s best cuisines. Neither woman had an easy path, and it is most interesting that these are real people truly experiencing these ups and downs, with a lot of anxiety on the way to their professional accomplishments.

Dog lovers are usually social people, positive, loyal, caring and preferring to be outdoors as much as possible. Among most, you will observe an endless dose of tolerance, especially when they come home to find pillows that have “suddenly exploded” and half-missing cakes on the table. Dog owners love taking long walks in nature, they are less burdened by cleaning floors at home, and they have no problem asking for a doggy bag at a restaurant. They love routine and awaken in a good mood more often than others, ready to get the day off to a great start thanks to their morning walk ritual. All those who didn’t learn about the wonders of living with dogs until their adult life will tell you that their life was turned upside down – for the better!
Bird lovers are open to new experiences, full of understanding, and resolute in achieving their goals. Since they like their own independence and a lot of travelling, they appreciate the independence and intelligence of their own pets (which are simultaneously very social beings). Bird lovers usually have great sense of humour, and their chattery parrots might reveal some of their darkest secrets, simply by repeating certain keywords ;-)
It is easy to recognise a lover of exotic animals! They are true individuals, yearning for adventure. They are quick to take up new activities reserved for adventurous spirits, and love to find their way in unknown situations. They enjoy exploring the unknown. They are fearless and often think differently than others, which can give a strong surge to their creativity. Sleeping under the stars in out of the way places is a dream come true.

EXOTIC
Cats are patient creatures, sharp observers and experienced hunters. A lot of effort is required to win them over. They have a character similar to that of their owners, and both cherish their independence. They are usually a bit distant, like their pets. Cats, unlike dogs, will limit the amount of petting they allow. It is commonly thought that cat owners are very creative people, inclined to philosophy. They do not like big and sudden changes, and prefer a safe and familiar environment. They feel good in their own skin, and often enjoy time alone when they can do what they like best.

THE NEW CONNECTED NORMAL
Connections in life make everything nice
T
he family bond or friendly ties, it’s always nice to take your mind of everyday stress and enjoy the gatherings, the bonding and genuine connections. Gorenje is dedicated to developing digital solutions and services which form digital connections that simplify our ‘analogue’ everyday life. By introducing Gorenje ConnectLife, Gorenje is proving that what was not too long ago considered ‘a kitchen of the future’, is now rapidly becoming our much more simplified reality… with less time - and thought consuming chores and more time for things in life that matter. Gorenje presents ConnectLife with intuitive digital assistants and the Gorenje bot which is also one of the elements of the mobile app than can, among others, be used for remote control of connected Gorenje appliances. The seamlessly connected devices and services take the simplification of our household to the next level as they offer various content, tips, notifications, updates, reminders and even personalized services for users to enjoy. Our ‘new normal’ has ovens, hobs and automatically adjusting hoods, all remotely controlled directly via Gorenje ConnectLife mobile app or voice controlled via smart devices, such as
56
Amazon’s Alexa, Google Home and similar. With the right content just a swipe away, no cooking or baking skills means no worries because you can rely on the Gorenje digital assistant to guide you through the preparation phase before it takes the control over the baking process, oven programs and innovative features, while Gorenje hoods connect to and adjust their settings to what’s cooking on the Gorenje induction hob or in the oven. Refrigerators with AdaptTech functions for automatic temperature adjustments ensure perfectly chilled results everytime. Dirty cloths (there’ll be fewer thanks to Gorenje smart IQ Induction hob that adjusts and prevents over boiling and other potentially messy mishaps) will be perfectly washed in the new WaveActive washers with automatically adjusting optimal washing programme … and that’s to name just a few features of Gorenje appliances that memorize and adapt to users’ habits only to optimize the results, functionality, energy efficiency … thus optimizing the householdrunning processes and ensuring the best possible version of a life simplified. SPOILER ALERT: While Gorenje ConnectLife app takes the mind of a lot of things and tasks, we’ll still have to put away our door-delivered groceries by ourselves.
OPENING HER MIND
Be afraid, WOMAN WITH A PLAN? be very afraid! Even in completely dysfunctional families, such as Carmela and Tony Soprano, most families meet in the kitchen. My family is not in Tony’s line of “business”, but the atmosphere in the kitchen is “criminally” good. And that doesn’t happen all on its own.
H
allelujah, we can finally close the door to OUR bedroom, was the satisfied comment of my husband when we moved into an apartment large enough for each of our two sons to have their own room. Even though they had no problem “squeezing” into a smaller space.
Hurricane in the kitchen Regardless of the surface area of the flat, now in the triple digits of square metres, we all seem to “collide” within the 15 square metres of kitchen which, you can admit, is a little strange if you live with one adult and three little men. But our little men truly experience the kitchen as a gathering place: someone is always taking something out of the fridge, heating something in the microwave, mixing up something magical in the blender … Sometimes this traffic in the kitchen bothers me, but this quickly passes. Though the kitchen often looks as though it’s been hit by a hurricane (why lie – it looks like this most days), I’d much rather it looks like this and sounds like laughter, than that it is sterile and cold.
Winning mentality
“
Making the kitchen a true gathering place is no piece of cake - it takes a winning mentality. Though this term is most often used for grand sporting, scientific and business
TO TURN YOUR KITCHEN INTO A GATHERING PLACE YOU NEED A GREAT PLAN. AND A WINNING MENTALITY accomplishments, a winning mentality is just as important if you want to ensure your family functions. And that
57
takes a lot of effort and patience. The typical family map looks something like this: wife in the kitchen, husband in front of the television, kid in their rooms. Communication: zero. Mood: negative.
Magical? Not! I didn’t want my family to look like that. I love cooking, but didn’t want to do everything on my own. I also didn’t want my little men to think that we have a magical fairy with a magic wand working permanently in the kitchen. So I needed a plan! First I needed to “break”, sorry inspire :-), my husband. Because in children’s eyes, daddy is a synonym for fun, and mommy for boring housework. I started with baby steps. “Can you chop the onions and carrots for the meat sauce? Please? You do such a great job …” Of course he did, “since he does it so well”. Then he began assisting during baking (since he has a sweet tooth, I knew he would fall for this). Little by little, he began to take his first culinary steps, loading the dishwasher soon became fun (OK, sometimes I might have suggested a reward after the kids fall asleep), and he soon became proud of his marinades. Once daddy had “fallen”, the kids also became interested. Yes, flour and bread crumbs and everything is everywhere, but this is a small price to pay for a fun and creative atmosphere in the kitchen. It soon became a fun place to hang out, with never a boring moment. That is why our kitchen has never looked like one out of a catalogue, but it is still our favourite place in the flat. Because it is alive, and something is always happening, and this is where the team is. I also like to think that it has something to do with my cooking. OK, OUR cooking …
OPENING EGIDA HIS EGIDA MIND
MEN vs. CHORES
T
“
A recent survey by a leading brand of DIY equipment, found 76% OF MEN NEVER READ MANUALS. Really?
Despite the very different lifestyles we now live compared to a few decades ago, men still have five more hours of free time each week, because they do less chores around the house than women.
he surveys also show that these patterns of daily household living haven’t change much over time, and if anything men’s free time continues to grow whilst women’s free time flat-lines. It’s not just the amount of chores, it’s also about the type of chores. The surveys show there are three chores that men seem to excel at - taking the rubbish out, changing light bulbs and small DIY tasks – so called ‘manly chores’. Whereas women still take responsibility for doing the washing and ironing, vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom. Cooking and smaller cleaning tasks are more equally shared.
So what is it about men and chores? Myself, being a
modern metrosexual man, and one who might expect to be seen at the forefront of ‘chore equality’, the division of labor in our home remains stubbornly traditional. Why is this? I have three theories.
Time. In our home, we both work and have busy careers. We have interests, friends and family commitments. In fact there’s never enough time. We share the chores, at least in theory. In practice apparently I take twice as long to finish them and create more work for my partner than her doing it in the first place.
58
Skill. I love to cook but my skills
at clearing up afterwards are sorely lacking. I iron but there’s no way I’d be allowed to iron anything important (or belonging to her). I offer to vacuum and even to clean the bathroom, but like most women when questioned in these surveys, she prefers me not to take on such chores because she knows I wouldn’t do these jobs to the required standard (hers).
Denial. Home appliances get
smarter all the time. I even worry their IQ exceeds mine. I always choose mine carefully, ones with intelligent features but not too many buttons or things to mess up. I embrace simplicity, especially if the appliance looks cool. And like most men, I never read the manual. It’s a sense of denial, I believe I know how it works but even the simplest of appliances requires regular use and common sense, neither of which I have yet to achieve. So will this imbalance in chores between the sexes ever change? Well, according to research by the University of Amsterdam, it might. When you retire, for reasons I am yet to fathom, men suddenly start to do more hours of chores per week and women start to do less. And for those men who embrace their more feminine side, by choosing not just the more manly chores, the upside according to the same research is more satisfaction in the bedroom. Now where’s that vacuum?
MEN’S BEAUTY
The days of just finding a toothbrush, toothpaste and some deodorant in men’s wash bag are clearly over.
O
pen any man’s wash bag and chances are you’ll find some ‘beauty products’, maybe something for the skin or some beard balm (even though beards are so yesterday according to most trend-setting magazines). The days of just finding a toothbrush, toothpaste and some deodorant are clearly over.
THE FASTEST GROWING PRODUCTS ARE GROOMING PRODUCTS, FOR HAIR AND BEARDS AND SKINCARE PRODUCTS, ESPECIALLY FACEMASKS AND MOISTURIZERS.
Time FACE
For Dry Skin
For Oily Skin This recipe takes minutes and the facemask should be used weekly. Simple ingredients too: • ½ tsp of honey • 2 tbsp of natural yoghurt • 3 tbsp of ground oatmeal Mix all the ingredients in a bowl using a blender, to create a paste and apply to your face, preferably after a shower or bath so your face is pre-steamed. Avoid any sensitive areas around your eyes and lips. Leave on for 15 minutes then rinse off with cool water.
DIY. The good news is that you don’t have to fork out for expensive spa treatments or for those oh so trendy and expensive face sheet masks (apparently the male grooming product for 2018). You can make many male beauty and wellness products yourself, in the privacy of your own home. We’ve created two easy recipes, using everyday ingredients. Simple.
59
Coconut oil is the base for this mask, again with simple everyday ingredients: • 2 tbsp of virgin coconut oil • ¼ cup of raw honey • 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil Mix all the ingredients in a bowl using a blender. Apply to your face with a small cosmetic brush, avoiding any sensitive areas around the eyes and lips. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash off with warm water. Borrow some of your partner’s moisturizer to keep the glow (it’s up to you if you ask her first!).

Instead of predictable aromas of restaurant food, nothing is more exciting than trying new flavours at street food festivals all around the world.
T
he growing popularity of television culinary shows has increased the interest for (street) food (and drink) festivals. People have grown tired of the predictable aromas of restaurant food, and want to try new flavours prepared in traditional ways, and the best place to experience this is in their place of origin. The Cayman Cookout, Melbourne Food & Wine Festival and Tokyo Ramen Show are some of the best known events of this type, while the largest is still considered the Taste of Chicago. One of the wildest world gastro events is the Bugfest (in northern California) which features
dishes made from insects, while at the Monkey Buffet Festival in Lopburi (Thailand), 400 kg of food is provided for monkeys. Festivals often feature side events, such as competitions in making dishes for the Guinness Book of World Records, creation of clothing from food ingredients, such as chocolate dresses at the Salon du Chocolat in Paris and Ecuador, and different activities such as the cheese hunt, pancake race, tomato fight (La Tomatina in Spain), and more. Some of these events have grown to become national holidays in their native land.
You might even get an exotic recipe or two straight from the famous chefs with MICHELIN STARS who are often the headliners of these events. 60

OUR TOP CHOICES
The Prague Food Festival (Czech Republic) is held in the Royal Gardens of Prague Castle that were originally ancient vineyards. Try one of the many appetizers, soups, main courses, desserts and a specially designed festival menu. The Wildfoods Festival (Hokitika, New Zealand) is a true feast of different ingredients that you didn’t even know could be used, such as pigeon eggs or earthworms. For the less enthusiastic, there are always more conventional dishes such as frog legs and garlic snails.
Summer
Stragusto Food Festival in Trapani on the island of Sicily is a grand street festival featuring traditional Sicilian dishes and many other Italian delicacies. The Dumpling Festival (Hong Kong) is a part of the Dragon Boat Festival in the picturesque Victoria Harbour, and the menu features dishes made from hazelnuts, lotus flower, bamboo or banana stuffed with meat, eggs and vegetables. Between bites, find some time to watch the famous dragon boat races. To end the holidays, Gourmet Festival Düsseldorf offers the best of quality and diverse international food and drinks. The famous ‘Königs Alle’ invites you to try some new or your favorite tastes.

FOOD FESTS TRANSFORM INTO A PLACE OF INSPIRATION AND SOPHISTICATED COOKING ENTERTAINMENT
Autumn
The theme of this year’s Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival is “Breaking the New”, dedicated to presenting the new trends in Scandanavian cuisine that are taking the international culinary scene by storm. Another must visit destination for seafood lovers is the Spain Seafood Festival, held in a tiny fishing village (O Grove) virtually completely surrounded by the sea. If you’d like to see a 750 g truffle sold for EUR 98,000, then be sure to visit the Truffle Festival in Italy. At the Tüftentagen Festival on the island of Usedom (Germany), the humble potato in all its guises is in the spotlight. A few weeks later, local chefs astonish diners with the variety of dishes at the Rügen Kale Festival.
Winter
Manchester Beer & Cider Festival features more than 750 different types of beer and cider, accompanied by food inspired by these beverages. The Festival Maslenitsa is a traditional Russian holiday, and one of the best ways to celebrate the end of winter and beginning of spring. The main stars of this festival are thin golden crepes and sweet ‘sushki’ buns, that resemble and symbolise the sun, and are eaten all week long with jam, butter, fruit and even caviar.

The Danish concept of relaxation – hygge – has become well known world wide, and implies tucking into a blanket, a homey atmosphere, warm beverages, candles, lamps, woollen socks, delicious food and good company. Let’s get to know some of the other good habits that make people happy worldwide.
THE NETHERLANDS
Modelled after the Danish hygge, the Dutch have defined their NIKSEN – the enjoyment of not working. This word literally means “doing nothing”. It means putting the focus on POINTLESS ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOW, HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS AND LISTENING TO MUSIC. Niksen is not the same as mental relaxation, it is more a way to enjoy the pauses in life. Instead of preoccupying your thoughts to find ways to be more active and make better use of the day, niksen offers the brain a chance to rest and recharge.
In the MEDITERRANEAN, France and further south, people live MORE FOR THE MOMENT, enjoying food, wine, family and the good life. Around the “blue zones” in Sardinia and on the island of Ikaria in the Greek Aegean, tourists are trying to unlock “the secret” of why people live longer in these places. Well, ultimately they realize that Ikarians LIVE MOSTLY IN THE OPEN AIR. No one fiddles with digital gadgets and the internet is something you find in a cafe if you need it. Also, very popular is the Italian concept DOLCE FAR NIENTE. It literally means the essence of doing nothing and enjoying it. All that matters is living the moment and admire life in it’s simplicity.

Russian culture is non-individualistic and that’s why Russians maintain more friendships than the average Westerner. In this time of business, money and market relations, Russians have succeeded in preserving human relationships. They still understand that family and real friends are the most important - they make them happy.
In JAPAN, people have ikigai — convergence of the FOUR PRIMARY ELEMENTS: PASSION, MISSION, VOCATION AND PROFESSION. Basically, this means that if you mix and balance what you love, what you’re good at, what you can get paid for and what the world needs – you will find your reason for being.

In Slovenia, the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach and the culinary experiences are inseparably connected with the natural elements of Slovenian landscapes. Vines have been cultivated in the region for millennia, but today this is a land of boutique winemakers whose experimental varietals and techniques are producing outstanding results and attracting adventurous oenophiles.

Slovenia has the word LOVE in its name, so it is a true paradise for romantic experiences. It is full of hidden dream spots where you can enjoy your unforgettable moments. The most northerly wine road winds its way over the hills of Slovenske Gorice and occupies a region next to the border with Austria. There lies Špičnik, famous for its heart-shaped wine road among vineyards. It was put on the world map of most romantic attractions last year by wedding photos of the musician Luka Šulić, half of the world-famous duo 2Cellos. Wedding photographs also featured the famous Heart among vineyards, which went viral worldwide.

The oldest vine in the world Žametovka or Modra kavčina (Bleu de Cologne), confirmed at 400 years of age, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest vine in the world still producing fruit. The old vine was planted in Maribor at the end of the Middle Ages during the Turkish invasions. It witnessed – and survived – the battles that raged between the invaders and defenders of the city, for the Old Vine House of today was once part of the city wall. Visit the city and surroundings as the wine-growing tradition in the Maribor region is marked by exceptional white wines, which rank among the best in the world. You can take a trip down one of the wine roads in the vicinity and enjoy yourself, while getting to know age-old customs and traditions. Tourist farms and wineries are the perfect choice for those who enjoy superb wines and fine food. The major characteristic the tastes of Slovenian gastronomic areas have in common is that they are made from locally produced ingredients.
Get off the beaten track and visit one of the ten essential destinations in Europe this year Peppered with terracotta-tiled hamlets and gothic spires, and lined with grapevines stretching along gentle slopes, it would be easy to mistake the Vipava Valley for a rustic Tuscan idyll. But these fertile winelands, bounded by steep karst plateaus to the north and south, are still remarkably undiscovered – and they’re hiding in plain sight, just outside Ljubljana. However, Lonely Planet named it among ten top places to visit in 2018. The Vipava Valley charms visitors with its natural sights and excites them

with genuine culinary arts and wines, but the very best thing about the valley are its people. The locals gladly open the doors of their wine cellars and present in person a taste of their excellent wine. Many also offer homemade food, the hale and hearty dishes of their grandmothers. Each one comes with the suitable wine accompaniment. Once or twice a year, many of the local farms hold their traditional osmica event, an open door tasting of all their available vintages, dishes and products.
