Editor’s Letter: Is it just me or does it seem like it takes longer and longer for football season to get here? The good news is that it is here! Every year at this time, every team has a shot at the Championship. Whether you are an Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson or any other fan, your team has a chance. As they say...that’s why they play the games. Some prognasitcators want to go ahead and give the trophy to Alabama again. While others are drinking the Urban Myer Koolaid. I guess we have to wait till January to find out just who can endure the obstacles and hoist that Sears trophy. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy our magazine. Welcome to the Southern Football Guide. This is the second edition of SFG in a digital format. This digital magazine will give you a quick glance at every team in the SEC and the ACC. We tried to pack as much information about those teams in one page as we could. We also want to be a reference guide for all college and NFL schedules all the way to the Bowl schedules at the end of the year. Plus, a Fantasy League section. Heisman Candidates 1. Teddy Bridgewater: QB, JR (Louisville)
After a stunning Sugar Bowl victory over Florida, Bridgewater will have plenty of momentum to vault up the Heisman boards with a strong season.
2. Tajh Boyd: QB, SR (Clemson)
Clemson figures to be one of the most prolific offenses in the nation; Boyd is the figurehead of the offense and if the team can put itself in the national championship race, Boyd will undoubtedly be in the Heisman race.
3. Jadeveon Clowney: DE, JR (South Carolina)
Clowney is the most intriguing player on this list and undoubtedly the most talented. Clowney has a chance to go down as the best defensive player in college history.
4. Kevin Hogan: QB, SO (Stanford)
Hogan is one of the dark horses in this Heisman race. Andrew Luck’s replacement came on strong last season and will look to ride that momentum in 2013.
5. Brett Hundley: QB, SO (UCLA)
Last season UCLA looked like a team on the rise, their quarterback is looking to lead the team to bigger and better things while collecting some hardware along the way.
6. Johnny Manziel: QB, SO (Texas A&M)
“Johnny Football” enters 2013 as the first freshman to ever win the Heisman award. He has proven that he is good enough to win, but can he repeat that performance amid distractions?
7. Marcus Mariota: QB, SO (Oregon)
Mariota is the perfect quarterback for the high-octane Oregon offense. Last season Mariota totaled 38 touchdowns, if he can build on that performance he should be a favorite to win.
8. A.J. McCarron: QB, SR (Alabama)
The quarterback of the Crimson Tide has been vital to the team’s success. McCarron should have little trouble being in the spotlight this season, and strong performances will go a long way in the voter’s eyes.
9. Braxton Miller: QB, JR (Ohio State)
Head coach Urban Meyer is big on Braxton Miller. If Miller can play up to his potential, and learn from Meyer, he could run away with this award.
10. Lache Seastrunk: RB, JR (Baylor)
Seastrunk has already declared that he will win the Heisman Trophy in 2013. He has the ability to contend for this award, but will need to elevate his game to make his prediction come true.

2012 Chick-fil-A Kick Off Game
The Chick-fil-A Kick Off Game and Chick-fil-A Bowl have matched up ACC and SEC teams for many years. Whether it is the start or the end of the season, the argument over who has the strongest conference rages on. While the ACC and SEC traditionally share the same part of the country, the southeast, each conference has spread to new horizons in recent years. However, the two “super conferences” share a long history and a rivalry due to their proximity. While the SEC blossomed into a football-first conference, the ACC morphed into a basketball behemoth in the early days in the conference. Duke, North Carolina, Maryland and Clemson each had glory days in football prior to the formation of the ACC in 1953, but the strength of the league became basketball in the 50s and 60s when coaching legends like Everett Case, Vic Bubas, Frank McGuire and Dean Smith captured the imaginations of fans from the Carolinas to the Chesapeake Bay. Meanwhile, in the Deep South, the SEC was turning itself into a football-mad conference where every school expected success and eventually had success, in the early days of the league. Started in 1933 with members formerly in the Southern Conference, the SEC formed itself from powerful football programs like Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Georgia Tech and Auburn. While each conference seemed to have its focus pretty much set on one sport, each league also had its exceptions. Kentucky turned into the top hoops program in the nation under the reign of Adolf Rupp in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Meanwhile, Clemson focused itself on football and eventually won it all in 1981 while systematically dominating the league on the gridiron. Many say that dynasties increase the popularity of sport, and that point has been both proven and disproven in the SEC. Kentucky’s basketball prowess seemingly intimidated the rest of
the league into submission prior to the 80s as the Wildcats won the conference nearly every year and were the only member to consistently make noise in the NCAA tournament. Alabama, meanwhile, dominated the conference with multiple dynastic runs in different decades on the gridiron. While the Crimson Tide seemed to raise the bar for the league occasionally, the other members caught up quickly to claim success of their own. The ACC has been following several steps behind Duke and North Carolina since the 80s in hoops, and with a few exceptions, have mostly fallen short of either matching the two giants in success or dragging them down to the level of the rest of the conference. Most in ACC country, despite the additions of Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Pittsburgh, will readily admit the SEC is the better football league. Those admissions are generally followed with pointed comments about academics and alleged rule-breaking. SEC fans, with perhaps one Big Blue exception, would admit that the ACC is the better basketball league, especially with Syracuse and next year’s addition, Louisville, in the mix. And while ACC fans make their own brand of excuses about SEC football superiority, SEC fans will plead apathy when confronted with a basketball argument. Outside of the Bluegrass State and possibly new-addition Missouri, SEC types just don’t flock to basketball games. But in the Southeast, college sports fans have the best of both worlds with SEC football and ACC hoops to follow.
CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT By: Will McFadden
Conference realignment has been a hot button issue in college football as of late. With teams such as Pittsburgh and Syracuse leaving the, now broken up, Big East in favor of the ACC, and Texas A&M joining Missouri in a jump to the SEC, the college football landscape is changing. The motives behind these moves are largely about money and the national spotlight. Many athletic directors will claim that their decisions are based upon academics, and athletics, with finances not at the forefront of their mind. The moves that have been made recently however, show otherwise. The ACC just landed a new television deal with ESPN that will guarantee each team an additional four million dollars per season. That deal likely would not have happened without Pittsburgh and Syracuse bolstering the conference. If money truly is the driving force behind conference realignment, and with more money being thrown into college football, it seems likely that there will be a day when we will see as few as four mega-conferences.
Although the ACC just received two more members, the conference is still on the verge of collapse. It is well known that Florida State is not happy with the new conference deal and believes that the conference could have received much more. As a result of these negative feelings, the Seminoles have been rumored to be in contact with the Big 12 about a possible realignment. The Big 12 is currently in contract talks for a new television deal that would pay about three million more per year than the current ACC deal. Chances are, due to numbers, that the Big 12 would want to absorb another team into the conference, likely from the ACC. Teams that have been linked to a possible transfer are Miami, Clemson, and Virginia Tech. If the ACC loses FSU and another one of those teams, it would go from being a relatively strong conference, to one that is very shaky.
Another conference, the SEC, is set to receive its own network very soon. Due to the recent success that the SEC has enjoyed, becoming one of the most dominating conferences in any sport, it will receive a contract extension on its original deal with ESPN. The original deal, which was signed in 2008, guaranteed the SEC 2.25 billion dollars over 15 years. The new deal will be a 20 year long agreement that will carry a substantial financial boost. With a new television contract that will increase national exposure and financial benefits, it is likely that many teams will clamor to join the SEC. This new deal is only one example of how money has ingrained itself into the college football landscape. If Conference realignment continues at a rate that has been similar to that of recent years, the only conferences that will remain stable are the ones that have many marquee teams with a lot of national recognition. The conferences that come to mind are the SEC, Pac 12, Big 12 and Big Ten. Each
of those conferences has enough appeal to draw in teams looking to get a piece of the ever growing pie. As conferences absorb more teams, it is likely that more money will continue to be thrown at that conference thus creating a cycle that draws more teams in. One interesting possibility, if it does eventually come down to four conferences, is that of a new playoff. It would be interesting to see a playoff that pits the top two teams from each conference against each other in an eight team playoff. Whether it is popular or not, the conferences are changing. Rivalries will be lost, traditions will be broken, and football may change; all of this is being done in pursuit of the almighty dollar. In a world that is seeing increased popularity in football and increased revenue in the sport, this change may be happening in the not too distant future.

It’s a fond farewell to the BCS formula, which caused about as much stress to the NCAA as Barry Switzer and Jerry Tarkanian combined. The 2013 season will be the last under the system, which used a series of polls and rankings to determine the two teams that should play for the national title. Critics hated the plan from the start, asking why college football would go away from a bowl system, but not to a true playoff system. Traditionalists complained about not being able to guarantee a Big Ten and Pac-12 matchup in the Rose Bowl each year or the Cotton Bowl having the best team from Texas (or Arkansas) facing a giant from another region. Playoff advocates continued to point to the archaic nature of college football and how stubborn university presidents failed to pass a playoff system that would no doubt bring millions more dollars to their schools and provide a “true” national champion to the sport. In 2014, that will all change, as a four-team playoff will replace the BCS. It will essentially consist of two semifinals, to be played in separate locations on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, while the final will be contested the second Monday of January, with the first coming on Jan. 12, 2015. Semifinal sites are still up for grabs, but the Rose, Orange and Sugar Bowls will be three of them. The Chick-fil-a, Cotton and Fiesta are the favorites to be named the other three semifinal sites, which will rotate. Those bowls will host major bowl games not in the semifinals in years in which they do not host a semifinal. The first final will be played at either Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas or Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Rose and Sugar are the 2014 semifinals sites.

OFFENSE: Boston College has been in steady decline
over recent seasons. After finishing an abysmal 2-10 last season, Coach Frank Spaziani is out and new head coach Steve Addazio is in. He will need to do some serious motivating to get this offense clicking again, and his players will need to rise to the occasion. Senior quarterback Chase Rettig has been a good but not great quarterback over his past three seasons at BC. Senior running back Andre Williams, who showed massive potential as a freshman but never really developed, will now be the featured back. Top receivers Alex Amidon and Johnathan Coleman will return for their senior seasons and will lead the receiving corps. Amidon had over a thousand yards receiving last season and appears to be the Eagles greatest offensive threat heading into the 2013 season. Senior Ian White, who missed the last three games of 2012, will return to lead an offensive line that gave up 36 sacks.
DEFENSE: Boston College has been known for hav-
ing great production out of its linebackers, with alumni that include Luke Kuechly and Mark Herzlich. This season should be no different as the linebacker position is far and away the best defensive unit. Seniors Steele Divitto and Kevin Pierre-Louis will be the leaders of this defense and the primary playmakers. After missing significant time over the past two seasons, senior defensive tackle Kaleb Ramsey will slide into his starting position to strengthen up the interior. On the outside is Kasim Edebali; the senior defensive end had 7.5 tackles for loss last season and 59 tackles total. Junior safety Al Louis-Jean will return after missing all of last season. Louis-Jean is a playmaker who can provide leadership and a strong presence for this defensive backfield. OFFENSE: The Clemson offense has the potential to
be one of the top offenses in the nation in 2013. Quarterback Tajh Boyd passed for nearly 4,000 yards last year and accounted for 46 of the Tiger’s touchdowns (36 passing, 10 rushing). Returning alongside him will be a potential All-American receiver in Sammy Watkins. After the loss of senior running back Andre Ellington, the Tigers will rely on a mix of backs to carry the load for the ground game. At the head of that pack heading out of spring is Roderick McDowell. He is an experienced running back who should able to soften the loss of the electrifying Ellington. The offensive line will return four starters from last season where they gave up over 2 sacks per game. This group figures to be more experienced this season and will be led by first team All-ACC tackle Brandon Thomas. If the line can keep Tajh Boyd on his feet, the offense has the ability to blow games wide open.
DEFENSE: If Clemson is going to be in the mix for the national championship game it will be the defense, not the offense that will get them there. Under Coach Brent Venables the defense made some improvement over last season and it culminated in the victory over LSU in the bowl game. After recording 8 sacks last season, junior defensive end Vic Beasley will now be the premier pass rusher on the team. Behind him will be a linebacker corps that is merely serviceable. Senior Quandon Christian will start at the strongside linebacker position and will be playing opposite junior Stephone Anthony. The secondary may be the weak link of this defense as it had no player record more than one interception. Sophomore Travis Blanks will be the primary playmaker in the secondary and has the potential to be the best safety in the league. Apart from Blanks however, Clemson will hope that others can step up and that some young players will earn starting roles for this team. 2013 SCHEDULE

OFFENSE: This season will be a season of growth and
transition for the Florida State offense. Redshirt freshman Jameis Winston looks like a superstar in the making and had an excellent spring. He is athletic, has a great arm, and is poised beyond his years. Also in the mix is sophomore Jacob Coker. He is the only quarterback on the roster with actual game experience at the collegiate level. Whomever starts at quarterback this season, they will have a pair of good runningbacks behind them. Juniors Devonta Freeman and James Wilder Jr. will be returning this season after finishing second and third in rushing respectively. Returning at wide receiver for the Seminoles is junior Rashad Greene. Greene is a lightning quick receiver who is a threat all over the field; he not only caught six touchdowns, but he also ran for one and returned punts for two more. The offensive line will be the strength of the offense as they return four starters including converted defensive lineman Cameron Erving.
DEFENSE: Florida State lost defensive coordinator
Mark Stoops to the job at Kentucky. Replacing him is a very good coordinator in his own right, Jeremy Pruitt. Pruitt will have a talented group to work with beginning with the defensive line. Leading this group will be junior noseguard Timmy Jernigan. Jernigan is a big player, just under 300 pounds, who plays with a great motor and a very quick burst. The linebacker corps will be led by outstanding senior Christian Jones who decided to come back for a final season in Tallahassee. The strongest unit however, is the secondary. Cornerback Lamarcus Joyner decided to forgo the draft in order to return for his senior season. After making First Team All-ACC as a strong safety last season, Joyner will slide to the outside to help replace departed corner, Xavier Rhodes. Also starting at corner will be Nick Waisome. NEWCOMERS OL Wilson Bell, Bell has the ability to play both tackle and guard. If he improves his footwork he could play on Sundays. OFFENSE: Injuries destroyed Maryland’s offense last
season, especially at the quarterback position. At one point the Terrapins were down to their fifth string quarterback and as a result the offense never truly manifested. Senior CJ Brown will likely be the starter entering the 2013 season and he will hopefully stay healthy and bring continuity at the position. Junior Deon Long and Stefon Diggs could become one of the best receiver tandems in the ACC. Deon Long, a JUCO All-American last season, will start his first year for Maryland. While Long will undoubtedly bring some excitement to the Maryland fan base, it is Stefon Diggs that will return as the star receiver. Diggs did a little bit of everything for the Terrapins last year, catching 54 balls for 848 yards and 6 touchdowns. Maryland will also return a pair of sophomore running backs in Brandon Ross and Wes Brown. The offensive line may be an area of weakness for Maryland this season.
DEFENSE: The defense will be entering its second season
under defensive coordinator Brian Stewart. Although they may not yet have the personnel to run the 3-4 well, the players that they currently have should be more comfortable entering the 2013 season. Returning for the Terrapins will be Darius Kilgo at nosegaurd, who produced 40 tackles and 5 for a loss last season. Kilgo will be surrounded by young raw talent on the line who will struggle early on but should improve vastly as the season goes on. The two inside linebackers for Maryland will be back. Juniors, L.A. Goree and Cole Farrand will look to lead from the inside out. Farrand was responsible for 78 tackles last season and 6 for a loss. The secondary will return the most experience, but could be worse of this season without a strong pass rush. Senior cornerback Dexter McDougle will start at one corner while junior Jeremiah Johnson will start opposite him.

OFFENSE: This will be a season of transition for the Wolfpack offense. Former Coach Tom O’Brien’s conservative attack will be replaced with new coach, Dave Doeren’s, faster approach with more read options and no huddles. Coming into summer there was a quarterback battle that has yet to be resolved. Junior transfer Pete Thomas seems to have a slight lead over sophomore Manny Stocker. Also in competition are the two running backs, junior Tony Creecy and sophomore Shadrach Thornton. Thornton rushed for more yards last season with 694 compared with Creecy’s 476. Junior receiver Bryan Underwood and senior Quintin Payton are one of the best duos in the ACC. Underwood, who uses his incredible burst and speed, had 44 catches for 620 yards and 10 touchdowns last season to establish himself as the go-to guy. Payton, while not as fast, uses his size to outmaneuver defenders. The offensive line only returns two starters from a year ago, when it wasn’t all that good even with veterans.
DEFENSE: Just like the offense, the defense will be
facing a transition season as well. New coordinator Dave Huxtable will be bringing in new terminology and a new energy to this Wolfpack defense. The Pack has a strong pass rush headlined by senior defensive end Darryl CatoBishop. Cato-Bishop finished last season with 10.5 tackles for a loss to go along with a team high 6.5 sacks. At the other end position is junior Art Norman. Norman is smaller and faster that Cato-Bishop and as a situational player last season he tallied 5.5 sacks. The hope is that senior D.J. Green can become a leader from the strongside position and build upon the year he had in 2011. Opposite Green is junior Brandon Pittman. Pittman is undersized but makes up for it with athleticism and good fundamentals. The secondary returns only one player from last season, but he is a good one. OFFENSE: The most important thing for the Syracuse coaching staff this offseason will be to pick a starting quarterback heading into the season. Terrell Hunt impressed coaches during the spring, but transfer Drew Allen will bring more competition come August. Whoever is behind center, the offense will most likely flow through the running backs. Junior Jerome Smith and senior Prince Tyson-Gulley form a very talented duo. Smith is a hard runner who is punishing in between the tackles and Tyson-Gulley is lightning quick and can take it to the house every time. The two complement each other very well. Stepping up as the number one receiver will be Jarrod West. West saw plenty of action last season catching 43 balls for 588 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he has never been the top receiver. The offensive line will return four starters but must figure out how to replace first round pick, Justin Pugh, at left tackle.
DEFENSE: The Orange will be led by a new defensive
coordinator this season, but the philosophy will likely be the same. The defensive line will be in transition for the second year in a row, but senior defensive tackle, Jay Bromley will look to provide consistency. Last season, Bromley had 39 tackles, 5.5 for a loss and 2.5 sacks from the nose tackle position. Returning at linebacker, and also providing experience, will be senior Marquis Spruill. Entering his fourth year as a starter, Spruill will provide leadership and motivation to the younger players around him. The secondary will lose AllBig East strong safety Shamarko Thomas, but stepping into his shoes will be sophomore Durrell Eskridge. Eskridge is raw but has the size, speed and ability to turn into a productive defender. At cornerback will be senior Keon Lyn who led the defense with 3 interceptions and 7 pass breakups.

OFFENSE: The offense for Wake Forest was abysmal
last season ranking 117th nationally. Returning for his final year at quarterback is Tanner Price. The senior regressed a little last season as he was constantly under duress due to inconsistent line play. This season the coaching staff would like to utilize the running game more and create more yards on the ground. Running back Josh Harris is a great back who has the ability to carry a team, unfortunately he is not on the field often enough as he has a big history of injuries. Harris rushed for 608 yards last season with 5 scores despite being constantly injured. Returning at wide receiver is Michael Campanaro; the senior receiver caught 79 passes for 763 yards and 6 touchdowns. The offensive line figures to be a weak spot again for the Demon Deacons in 2013. The line has experience, but they are just not talented enough to win in the trenches.
DEFENSE: The Wake Forest defense will return 8
starters and that experience should help improve the numbers from 2012. Returning on the defensive line is Nikita Whitlock, a non-prototypical tackle who has performed well above expectations. Despite his size Whitlock has become one of the best tackles in the ACC. Last season he had 51 tackles 5.5 for a loss and 3 sacks, all while dealing with injuries. Also along the line is senior defensive end Zach Thompson. Thompson became Wake Forest’s best pass rusher after totaling 52 tackles and 4 sacks. At linebacker senior Justin Jackson can give other teams headaches. The secondary was not a strength for the team last year, but will return most of its starters from last season. Junior corner Kevin Johnson played at a very high level last year recording 15 pass breakups, 3 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles. Starting at free safety will be senior A.J. OFFENSE: Junior Anthony Boone will be the most
recent quarterback to take the helm for the Blue Devils. Although Boone has played sparingly he has amassed an impressing 6-0 record in his six starts for Duke. Accompanying Boone in the backfield will be a trio of talented runningbacks. Senior Juwan Thompson, junior Josh Snead, and sophomore Jela Duncan will be the three ball carriers for the Blue Devils this season. Although Duke will lose its superstar receiver in Connor Vernon, the number one receiver from last season, Jamison Crowder, will return. Crowder, who surpassed 1,000 yards last season as a sophomore, is lightning quick and is only beginning to reach his potential. Tight end Braxton Deaver, who missed all last season, will be back for the Blue Devils. The offensive line will return four starters from last season which include guard Dave Harding and tackle Perry Simmons, both of whom were honorable All-ACC mentions last year.
DEFENSE: Duke ranked 105th nationally in total
defense last season and is only bringing back five starters. Returning for a sixth season of eligibility will be defensive end Kenny Anunike. Anunike has nine sacks over his past sixteen games and, when he is healthy, is by far the Blue Devils’ best pass rusher. Alongside him will be returning senior defensive tackle Sydney Sarmiento. Sarmiento has started 36 games for Duke and, at 300 pounds, will be able to plug the middle for the defensive line. During most of the season, Duke will only use two linebackers on defense. Junior Kelby Brown who is coming off of an injury in 2012 is expected to take one of those starting spots. Returning in the secondary is First Team AllACC defensive back Ross Cockrell. OFFENSE: The offense for Georgia Tech under head
coach Paul Johnson has always been fairly predictable. They are an excellent running team and the triple option will give defensive coordinators fits, but their passing game is almost non-existent. Although sophomore quarterback Vad Lee, who has a stronger arm than previous quarterback Tevin Washington, will be starting, but he lacks any strong receivers. Junior Darren Waller will be the veteran for a young receiving corps and he had just over 100 yards receiving last season. Junior Zach Laskey and senior David Sims will be the primary ball carriers for the Yellow Jackets. These two rushed for just under 700 yards a piece last season and, although Sims looks the be the starter on the depth chart coming out of spring, Laskey will get a fairly equal amount of carries. Georgia Tech returns a veteran laden offensive line that will be able to open up holes for this running attack and control the line of scrimmage.
DEFENSE: Over the past few seasons the Georgia
Tech defense has been weak. Former defensive coordinator Al Groh was fired midway through last season. He is replaced by Ted Roof this year who is coming over from Penn State after serving as their defensive coordinator last season. Senior defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu racked up an impressive 10 sacks last season to go along with 69 tackles. Behind the line will be a good linebacker corps led by senior Brandon Watts. Watts recorded 77 tackles and 2 sacks in 2012. Alongside Watts will be sophomore Jabari Hunt-Days. In his first season as a Yellow Jacket, Hunt-Days recorded 84 tackles to go along with 1 interception. The secondary should be in good shape with seniors Jemea Thomas and Isaiah Johnson returning. Thomas had 86 tackles and 4 interceptions last season and Johnson pitched in with 87 tackles of his own. OFFENSE: The Miami Hurricanes could very well have
one of the most explosive offenses on the east coast in 2013. Senior quarterback Stephen Morris is a stud after passing for over 3,000 yards and tossing 21 touchdowns last season. Behind him will be sophomore running back Duke Johnson. Johnson had a breakout season as a freshman and rushed for 947 yards and 10 touchdowns. The wide receiver corps returns a lot of depth and a lot of competition for the top spot. Junior Phillip Dorsett will battle sophomore Herb Waters for the starting spot across from senior Allen Hurns. While the skill positions are very strong for Miami, it is the offensive line that is the true weapon for this offense. With all five starters coming back and all of them pro prospects, Miami should have no problem winning in the trenches. Sophomore Ereck Flowers, while the youngest on the line, has the chance to become the best of the bunch at left tackle.
DEFENSE: After years of Miami football being associ-
ated with strong defense, the Hurricanes looked bad in 2012. Junior defensive end Anthony Chickillo is poised to have a monster season. If he can improve on his numbers from last season, 45 tackles, 6.5 for loss and 4 sacks, it will go a long way towards improving this defense. Defensive tackle Curtis Porter is hoping that he can stay healthy during his senior season. When he is healthy, Porter is one of the best in the ACC at his position, however he has played in only 16 games since 2009. Junior linebacker Denzel Perryman may be the best player on Miami’s defense. Missing three games due to injury, Perryman was still able to tally 64 tackles, good for second most on the team. Heels averaged over 40 points a game. Fedora’s no huddle attacking offense shattered school records last season and look poised to continue the trend in 2013. Senior quarterback Bryn Renner is super accurate and passed for 3,356 yards, 28 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions last year. Senior running back A.J. Blue is a hard runner who runs north and south as well as hard between the tackles. Last season Blue ran for 433 yards and 10 touchdowns. Sophomore receiver Quinshad Davis busted onto the scene last season as a freshman catching 61 balls for 776 yards and 5 touchdowns. He has a fantastic work ethic and looks to become one of the best receivers in the league as a sophomore. The offensive line lost three starters including first round pick Jonathan Cooper, but returns senior left tackle James Hurst as well as a slew of capable backups turned starters.
DEFENSE: The North Carolina coaching staff decided to
employ a 4-2-5 defensive scheme, and with a lack of strong linebackers this year, that may come back to haunt them. Junior linebacker Travis Hughes may be that player. Hughes, may have plenty of raw talent, has not developed as quickly as many had hoped. One player who has reached his potential is senior defensive end Kareem Martin. Martin, a Second Team All-ACC selection last year, will become more of a leader on the defensive line and look to improve upon the 4 sacks that he posted in 2012. Junior Tim Scott will start at one corner position while senior Jabari Price gets the start at the other. Scott is a playmaker with the ball in the air, intercepting four balls last season, although he does sometimes get burned by pump fakes. The best of all of them is senior free safety Tre Boston. He decided to forgo the NFL Draft and return for a final season at Chapel Hill. Boston led the team in tackles with 86 and shared the lead in interceptions with 4. 2013 SCHEDULE

OFFENSE: There will be many new faces on the Pitt
offense in 2013. After transferring from both Rutgers and Arizona, senior Tom Savage will get the start at quarterback. Savage is big and strong, drawing comparisons to Joe Flacco. With the departure of Rushel Shell to UCLA, Isaac Bennett will now be the starting running back. The junior is an every down back who is quick and tough, with nice hands. Returning at wide receiver is possibly the best player on the offense, Devin Street. The senior caught 73 balls for 975 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. Tight end J.P. Holtz will be another strong target as he looks to build on a very solid rookie season. The offensive line has been shuffled around this offseason in a desperate attempt to improve from last year; it will be a work in progress all season.
DEFENSE: Another defensive coordinator will be
leading a defense that returns 9 starters from last season. Matt House has been promoted internally and, while he won’t change anything, he must get used to being the lead man. Returning on the line is lighting quick defensive tackle Aaron Donald. The senior made 64 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks last season. At linebacker will be senior Shane Gordon. Gordon can be injury prone, but when he is on the field he is consistent and talented. The secondary will be the strength of this defense. Senior free safety Jason Hendricks will look to build on an incredible junior year in which he racked up 90 tackles and 6 interceptions. OFFENSE: Virginia is looking to become a much more
traditional offense after failing to score often last season. A new quarterback will take the helm for the Cavaliers and while he has yet to be named, all signs indicate that sophomore David Watford will be the man come fall. Regardless of who is at quarterback, Virginia is looking to become a better running team and will focus on that in 2013. Junior running back Kevin Parks has been a good role player the past two seasons, but will now step into a starting role. Last season, Parks rushed for 713 yards and 5 touchdowns and proved that he is more than capable of becoming a workhorse for Virginia. The receivers for the Cavaliers were without a true No. 1 guy until the emergence of explosive playmaker, Darius Jennings. Jennings finished his sophomore season with 45 catches for 545 yards and 5 touchdowns. The offensive line is rather ordinary with the exception of left tackle Morgan Moses.
DEFENSE: In his first season as defensive coordina-
tor, Jon Tenuta looks to bring a much more aggressive style of play to the Cavaliers. Unfortunately it does not seem like he has much to work with in terms of talent. Eli Harold, a sophomore defensive end, has plenty of upside after being a 5 star recruit. Harold could have a breakout year in his first as a starter. Junior linebacker Henry Coley is a strong and physical linebacker who can beat others to the point of attack. Before being suspended last season Coley made 40 tackles and 4.5 for a loss. The strength of this defense is by far the secondary. With all four starters returning, the defense will be stingy through the air in 2013. Demetrious Nicholson, a junior cornerback, broke up 15 passes last season and recorded 56 tackles. OFFENSE: Virginia Tech’s offense last season lacked
any real signs of being dangerous. Quarterback Logan Thomas was erratic with the football and there was no true No. 1 running back. Thomas will return to lead the Hokies in his senior season. After passing for just under 3,000 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions the potential is noticeable. In 2013, it seems that the Hokies will employ a committee approach to running the football. Sophomore J.C. Coleman finished last season with 492 yards and 2 touchdowns on 109 carries. Alongside Coleman will be redshirt freshman Trey Edmunds. The Hokies will count on young receivers to step up and make plays. Senior D.J. Coles missed all of last season with an injury but is a big receiver who can move very well and create separation. The offensive line, while strong on the interior, will be welcoming two new tackles into the rotation which may cause them to struggle early on.
DEFENSE: The defense for Virginia Tech has always been very good under long time head coach Frank Beamer and this year will be no different. Senior defensive end James Gayle is a great playmaker along the defensive line and has the ability to change a game in a single play. Last season, Gayle recorded 43 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, 5 sacks, and an amazing 27 quarterback hurries. The defensive MVP of this team is senior linebacker Jack Tyler. Last season Tyler racked up an incredible 119 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. The strength of this team may very well be the secondary. Senior corner Antone Exum is recovering from an ACL injury that occurred during a basketball game in February. Nevertheless, when Exum gets healthy he is a fantastic corner who has great size and, as evidenced by his 5 interceptions a year ago, has great instincts around the ball. 2013 SCHEDULE

OFFENSE: After a surprising 11-2 season last year,
which culminated in a Sugar Bowl loss to Louisville, Will Muschamp’s Gators are looking to contend for a berth in the National Championship Game. In order to reach that goal, the offense must take a step forward from last season. Quarterback Jeff Driskel has yet to show that he can put the team on his back and carry them to a win. The bread and butter of a Muschamp offense has always been the running game. With the departure of Mike Gillislee the door is open for sophomore running back Matt Jones. Jones is a physical type of runner who can pound it between the tackles to wear down defenses. Junior Quinton Dunbar led the receivers in yards last season with 383 yards and 36 catches. The offensive line is returning intact for the most part. Sophomore D.J. Humphries, who saw substantial playing time as a freshman, will move into the starting left tackle position this season.
DEFENSE: The Gators’ defense, one of the best in
the nation last year, will not rebuild this season, but reload. After losing three starters along the defensive line, senior Dominique Easley will be the veteran among young but talented linemen. Jonathan Bullard, a sophomore defensive end, has massive potential after posting 27 tackles in limited playing time last season. Another star in the making is fellow sophomore Dante Fowler Jr. Fowler Jr. will be making the start at linebacker this season after racking up 30 tackles as a true freshman last year. Last year’s strength of the team was the defensive secondary and that should be no different this season. Despite losing three key players for various reasons, Florida will return two talented defensive backs and have many young players ready to step in and make plays. Juniors Marcus Roberson and Loucheiz Purifoy will return to their corner positions for a secondary that ranked among the best in the league last season. 2013 SCHEDULE

OFFENSE: Georgia will boast one of the top offenses
in the SEC, if not the nation, this season. Returning for his final season is quarterback Aaron Murray, who is on pace to shatter career records for quarterbacks in the SEC. Behind Murray is one of the top running back tandems in the nation. Todd Gurley finished with over 1,300 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns last season and Keith Marshall finished with over 700 yards despite having half the carries of Gurley. Gurley has a rare combination of size and speed that will give defenses fits. Junior Malcolm Mitchell, who spent time at corner last season due to injuries, is back full time at wideout and has the speed to burn people deep. Michael Bennett who suffered a season ending injury last year is a tough receiver who makes the hard catches and will provide good route running underneath. The offensive line will return all five starters from last season making this a complete offensive unit.
DEFENSE: As good as the offense is for the Bulldogs
entering this season, the defense is a giant question mark. Coming into last season the defense was vying to be one of the best in the country and while this year won’t be a rebuilding season for the defense, it will be inexperienced. Senior defensive end Garrison Smith will get the start for the Bulldogs along the defensive line and will be the veteran for a young but talented group. One player who has a chance to reach their caliber is sophomore linebacker Jordan Jenkins. Returning at linebacker will be junior Amarlo Herrera, who has been a good player for the Bulldogs during his career in Athens registering 70 tackles last season. Damian Swann, a junior who saw forced time due to injuries last season, will start at corner this year. At the safety positions are two highly touted recruits over the past two offseasons. OFFENSE: Under new head coach Bob Stoops and
new coordinator Neal Brown, the Wildcats will look to have a much more aggressive offense approach. However, the personnel that is currently in place may slow down the transition. No clear cut quarterback has come forth and there is a battle taking place between sophomores Jalen Whitlow and Maxwell Smith. Both of these quarterbacks saw playing time and both were adequate when behind center with Whitlow completing 54% for 801 yards and 3 TD’s and Smith completing 55% for 819 yards and 4 TD’s. Returning seniors Raymond Sanders and Jonathan George are two playmakers in the backfield. Both are strong runners that are athletic and quick enough to bounce it outside. There are not many talented receivers on this team, but one that may step up this season is junior Demarco Robinson. The offensive line will return three starters including left tackle Darrian Miller who is big and athletic.
DEFENSE: The defense has a chance to be very good
in Bob Stoop’s first season. Known for his ability to create tenacious defenses, Stoops will have plenty of athletes to work with in 2013. On the defensive line, junior Alvin Dupree is a nightmare in the offensive backfield. The 6-4 defensive end compiled 6.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss to go along with 91 tackles. Returning at linebacker is senior Avery Williamson. Williamson led the team with 135 tackles last season which was also good enough to be second in the SEC. Opposite him will be the ultra athletic junior Miles Simpson. Simpson, a converted running back, is very quick at the outside linebacker position and will be able to chase down ball carriers and receivers alike. If there is a weak spot in this defense it will be in the secondary where there are no primary playmakers. OFFENSE: Quarterback James Franklin never lived
up to the expectations people had for him last year due to injuries. This year the senior looks ready to go and his shoulder is giving him no problems. Another player returning from injury, and one that will provide a big boost, is running back Henry Josey. When healthy Josey was an explosive workhorse for the Tigers, but the injury was so severe many wondered if he would ever play again. If Josey cannot play then the starting duties will fall to fellow junior Marcus Murphy. The Tigers will return a solid wide receiver corps headlined by sophomore and major recruit Dorial Green-Beckham. While GreenBeckham was considered a failure in his first season for Missouri, he displayed flashes of his incredible athleticism which made him the number one wide receiver out of high school. The offensive line will return four starters from last season and should be good in pass protection to give Franklin plenty of time to distribute.
DEFENSE: The defense for the Tigers has a good
amount of talent returning for the 2013 season. While they are losing Sheldon Richardson along the line, they are returning a pair of talented defensive ends. Junior Kony Ealy had 37 tackles and 10 for a loss last season at the end position and fellow defensive end, Michael Sam, contributed 4.5 sacks. Behind them will be a good crop of returning linebackers highlighted by senior Andrew Wilson. Wilson led the team with 79 tackles last season and is making the transition to middle linebacker this season. Donovan Bonner will start at the strong side position after posting 39 tackles in five starts last year. The secondary will start four upperclassmen, three seniors and one junior. Senior cornerback E.J. Gaines posted 74 tackles last season. OFFENSE: Under Steve Spurrier South Carolina has
experienced never before seen success. The offense, despite losing elite running back Marcus Lattimore, should be able to continue those winning ways in 2013. Senior quarterback Connor Shaw is both a talented runner and passer who has proven that he can lead South Carolina to key wins. Also rotating in at quarterback is junior Dylan Thompson, a better passer. Together they form a very talented quarterback rotation. Running back Mike Davis is a stout back who can pound it in between the tackles for tough yards, but also has a great burst to bounce it outside and take it deep. The receiving corps is talented and deep but none of them have proven they can be consistent playmakers. Bruce Ellington may be the best of the bunch. The offensive line is big and returning experienced players, but they have issues in pass protection. These issues are only exacerbated with a running quarterback leading the offense. DEFENSE:The conversation about the South Carolina defense in 2013 will begin and end with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The Heisman Trophy contender will be on everyone’s radar week in and week out. Clowney registered 13 sacks last season but was also surprisingly stout against the run, recording 54 tackles. Playing on the line with Clowney will be fellow junior Kelcy Quarles. The defensive tackle is a bit undersized for that position but makes up for it with elite quickness. The linebacker position could be an area of weakness for this team in 2013. Sophomore Kaiwan Lewis had a promising spring and has the coaching staff excited. The secondary for this team will be solid again this coming season. Strong safety Brison Williams will be ready for his first time starting. The junior is not elite when it comes to defending passes, but he can hit as hard as any linebacker and will be an asset against the run. WR Pharoh Cooper, Cooper has a sturdy frame, and did a little bit of everything in high school; he can become a very good receiver. OFFENSE: The offense for Tennessee seems poised
to go through a down year unless a number of people step up. Tyler Bray made the wrong call in going pro after last season and as a result the Vols are left with a quarterback battle coming out of spring. Junior Justin Worley seems the most logical fit, and has been given every opportunity to win the job outright, but he struggled in the games he played in last season. Battling Worley is redshirt freshman Nathan Peterman. Tennessee may choose to rely heavily on the running game in 2013. Rajion Neal will be the starting running back his senior season. Last season he ran for 708 yards and 5 touchdowns, adding 4 more receiving touchdowns. Tennessee is looking for anyone to contribute at wide receiver. Junior Vincent Dallas is the hope to become the new number one receiver due to his size and speed. The offensive line progressed nicely over the course of last season and has now turned into a strength.
DEFENSE: As good as the offense was for Tennessee
last year the defense was equally bad. Finishing last in overall defense in 2012 there is nowhere to go but up for the Volunteers. The pieces are all there, it is just up to them to make plays and produce on the field. Along the defensive line Maurice Couch will plug up the middle. With 38 stops and 4 tackles for a loss last season Couch is just scratching his potential. At 6-2 299 pounds, the senior has massive upside for this team. While the defense struggled last season it was certainly not due to the play of A.J. Johnson. The junior linebacker tallied 138 tackles and 8.5 tackles for a loss. Johnson is quickly becoming one of the best linebackers in the SEC and he will need to become a leader for this defense. Also returning from an ACL injury is strong safety Brian Randolph. OFFENSE: Vanderbilt has consistently improved under
head coach James Franklin’s tenure. No longer a doormat, the Commodores have begun to attract playmakers to the program. Gone is quarterback Jordan Rodgers leaving a quarterback battle heading into the fall. Senior Austyn Carta-Samuels, a Wyoming transfer, has a slight lead but has yet to take control of the starting spot. He is being pushed hard by redshirt freshman Patton Robinette. A running back committee will be the primary mode of ground game for the Commodores in 2013. Senior Wesley Tate is a strong runner who also has good hands and can contribute in the receiving game. Tate rushed for 376 yards and 8 touchdowns last season. Brian Kimbrow will also receive his share of carries this year. Wide receiver Jordan Matthews decided to pass up the NFL and return for one final season in Nashville. Matthews had an incredible season in 2012 amassing 1,323 yards on 94 catches and 8 touchdowns. The offensive line will return four starters and will be excellent in the run game.
DEFENSE: The Vanderbilt defense has improved
greatly over the past few seasons, and ended last season ranked 18th nationally in points per game. Along the defensive line, senior Walker May will be a standout at the end position. May recorded 41 tackles, 3 sacks and 10.5 tackles for a loss last season. Senior Chase Garnham is a star at linebacker after recording a team high 7 sacks and 84 tackles with 12.5 tackles for a loss. Alongside Garnham is fellow senior Karl Butler. Butler added 51 tackles, 2 sacks and 11.5 tackles for a loss and should only improve with more experience. The secondary was a strength for this team last season and with three returning starters, it should be even better this year. Kenny Ladler, a senior free safety, led the team with 90 tackles last season while also picking the ball off twice. Returning at corner is Andre Hal. The senior received All-SEC recognition after breaking up 14 balls and intercepting two. 2013 SCHEDULE

OFFENSE: The Crimson Tide will have one of the
strongest offenses that they’ve had in years come fall, with returning senior, and Heisman Trophy candidate, A.J. McCarron leading the way. McCarron threw for just under 3,000 yards last season while owning a 67.2 completion percentage and tossing 30 touchdowns to only 3 interceptions. Returning with McCarron is talented sophomore running back T.J. Yeldon who rushed for over 1,100 yards as a freshman. Another sophomore, wide receiver Amari Cooper, will return as Alabama’s leading receiver. Cooper had 59 catches for exactly 1,000 yards last season. Alabama will return only two members of the offensive line, but a good spring gives little doubt that they will be able to protect McCarron and pave the way for T.J. Yeldon. This offense has the chance to put up very high numbers on opposing defenses this season.
DEFENSE: Alabama’s defense this season will be
as strong as its linebackers make it. Last season’s leading tackler, C.J. Mosley, will return to take on a full time role at the inside linebacker position. The front seven will be his to command and will be surrounded by other returning linebackers Trey Depriest and Adrian Hubbard. Incoming freshman defensive ends Dalvin Tomlinson and Jonathan Allen could make a big impact early. With the loss of Dee Milliner, the Crimson Tide are hoping that sophomore corner Geno Smith can make a big impact starting across from senior Deion Belue. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has one safety spot locked down after a very good season last year, but the other safety position remains up in the air. OFFENSE: Even with Tyler Wilson leading the way
last season, it was clear that without Bobby Petrino the offense took a step back. This season new head coach Bret Bielema, who came over from Wisconson, and new offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will look to reverse that trend. Sophomore quarterback Brandon Allen won the starting job in the spring as he proved to be more accurate and confident than he was last season. Mekale McKay, a sophomore, had the most targets last season of any player returning, and seniors Javontee Herndon and Julian Horton must find a way to become leaders and playmakers for this young corps. The offensive line will be anchored by returning center Travis Swanson. The senior will be working alongside players who have all started before and that experience should help the young skill players make plays.
DEFENSE: Coming over with Coach Bielema from
Wisconsin is defensive coordinator Chris Ash. His primary focus will be on a secondary which had no more than five pass break ups from any one player. The secondary will be lead by safeties Rohan Gaines and Eric Bennett, both of whom will need to play a more aggressive style of football. The linebacker corps is relatively inexperienced compared to last year. They will be playing behind a defensive line that could be one of the best in the country. Returning defensive ends Chris Smith and Trey Flowers are two excellent pass rushers that do a very good job against the run as well. Defensive Tackles Bryan Jones and Robert Thomas will also return making the defensive front four easily the best defensive unit on the team. OFFENSE: This will be the first season as Auburn’s
head coach for Gus Malzahn. Many of Auburn’s players were recruited for his offensive scheme meaning the offense should be much better than the abysmal unit last year. Tre Mason, Auburn’s leading rusher last season, will return this year to fuel the running game. JUCO transfer, Cameron Artis-Payne, will also receive his share of the carries and will be a big complement to the speedy Mason. Neither Kiehl Frazier nor Jonathan Wallace wowed coaches last season when they split time at quarterback. Ideally JUCO transfer Nick Marshall would have a strong enough showing in workouts to win the job outright. Auburn lost both Emory Blake and Philip Lutzenkirchen the team’s leading receivers. Quan Bray and Trovon Reed will need to step up their play and become leaders for the team’s younger receivers. Due to strong recruiting over the years, the offensive line will be able to hold its own against the defensive lines of the SEC. DEFENSE: Auburn had a tough time with its defense during the Gene Chizik. New defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson will look to turn that around and bring some fire back to the defense. He will employ a 4-2-5 defense which should work well against spread offenses, but he will also make changes and work with a 4-3 and a 3-4 against pro-style offenses. Cassanova McKinzy and Demetruce McNeal, who were both four star recruits, will anchor the defense. McNeal will return after being the second leading tackler last season for the Tigers, and he will be joined by Jermaine Whitehead who finished third in tackles last season. The defensive backfield will need to be much better than the past few years and is the biggest question mark. Justin Garrett could have an impact as a hybrid linebacker / safety. OFFENSE: If ever there is a season for LSU to take
a step back, it will be 2013. Senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger has been inconsistent over the course of his career, at times he has been remarkable, and at other times he is merely average. With Jeremy Hill possibly sidelined for legal issues, the ball carrying duties will fall to senior Alfred Blue. Blue suffered a season ending knee injury last year, and while he has maintained that he is 100%, the staff may try to bring him along slowly. Also splitting time at running back will be Kenny Hilliard. Sophomore receiver Jarvis Landry will be a big piece of this offense in 2013. Landry brings some attitude to this team and is fearless no matter who he is facing. Opposite Landry will be the agile Odell Beckham Jr. The offensive line is a wild card heading into this season. This line will need to find some cohesiveness in practice in order to keep Mettenberger upright.
DEFENSE: Coming into 2013, the LSU defense
must replace 7 starters. Losing such stars as Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo will put the Tigers in a tough spot defensively but there are plenty of athletes on the roster to help soften the blow. Defensive tackle Anthony Johnson had a 30 tackle season last year and recorded 10 tackles for a loss while seeing less time and having a bit of a down season. The linebackers will have plenty of competition as individual positioning within the linebackers does not seem to matter to the coaches, the best athlete will play. Junior Lamin Barrow had a very good season for the Tigers last year in which he posted 104 tackles. The defensive backfield is a little more solidified. After taking his lumps as a freshman, Jalen Mills will start for the Tigers at corner after earning freshman All-American honors last season. OFFENSE: Hugh Freeze is entering his second
year as head coach of the Rebels and it would seem that he has put together an offense that can be very competitive in the SEC. After shuffling around quarterbacks last year, Bo Wallace stepped forward and proved that he can be a player this team can rely on. The junior quarterback threw for 2,994 yards while tossing 22 touchdowns to 17 picks. The running backs on the Ole Miss roster can absolutely fly. Senior Jeff Scott, who runs a sub 4.4 40, rushed for 846 yards last season with 6 touchdowns. The Rebels will return all of the top targets from a year ago which includes number one receiver, junior Donte Moncrief. Moncrief tied the school record with 10 touchdown catches last season while also recording 979 receiving yards. The offensive line will return four starters and left guard Aaron Morris stands above the rest.
DEFENSE: A big part of why Ole Miss is changing
as a football program and becoming more competitive in the SEC is their defense. Last season their defense featured a strong pass rush and very good linebacker play, this season should be no different. All 11 starters are returning for the Rebels in 2013. Junior defensive end CJ Johnson is a talented pass rusher who can get to the quarterback quickly. Johnson totaled a team high 6.5 sacks to go along with 8 tackles for a loss. The big freshman on campus will be defensive end Robert Nkemdiche. Robert’s brother, Denzel, is already a proven SEC linebacker and was the star of last year’s defense. Denzel Nkemdiche recorded 82 tackles, 3 picks, 3 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 10 tackles for a loss in his freshman season. The secondary will be the weakest part of the defense, but even the defensive backfield has some playmakers. OFFENSE: Mississippi State’s offense was able to
roll over its weaker opponents but faltered against the tough teams from the SEC West. Senior quarterback Tyler Russell had a breakout year for the Bulldogs last season. He will have a good tailback in Ladarius Perkins to help support him as they manuver the brutal SEC defenses. Perkins rushed for over 1,000 yards last season in his first as the Bulldogs featured back. Out wide will be a group of untested receivers. The Bulldogs will need to replace all of their top targets from a year ago, but there is hope that standout return man, Jameon Lewis, will be able to become a standout receiver. The offensive line will be returning four starters and will be nearly impenetrable in pass protection. Senior Gabe Jackson is an All-American candidate at left guard and is on every NFL team’s scouting list entering 2013.
DEFENSE: On paper the defense has a tremendous
amount of athletes, but last season they failed to develop any kind of consistent pass rush. Sack leader, Preston Smith, returns as a junior after posting 4.5 sacks in 2012. Sophomore Benardrick McKinney will start at middle linebacker for the Bulldogs and he has all of the ability to become a big time player. Last season he was second on the team with 102 tackles while also recording a sack and 4.5 tackles for a loss. The secondary should be good this season despite losing two talented corners in Jonathan Banks and Darius Slay. Those losses should be mitigated however by the return of senior free safety Nickoe Whitley. Whitley is a fast safety with incredible range, finishing with 88 tackles and 3 picks last season. JUCO transfer Justin Cox will step in immediately at corner and provide a big impact. OFFENSE: Last season was better for Texas A&M
than anyone could have ever expected. This season has the potential to be even better for the offense. After a Heisman winning season in which Manziel did a little bit of everything, he may do a bit more delegating as a sophomore. With a talented group of running backs behind him, Manziel may not need to run as often. Senior running back Ben Malena finished the season with 808 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns to rank second on the team behind Manziel. Returning at wide receiver is breakout sophomore Mike Evans. Evans put together a fantastic season last year compiling 82 catches for 1,105 yards and 5 scores. With the size to bully opposing defenders and the speed to break away, Evans will be one of the best receivers in the nation. The line gets a huge boost with the return of Jake Matthews, a player who could have gone in the first round of the draft this year.
DEFENSE: The defense for Texas A&M doesn’t
need to be lights out, it just needs to keep the team in games and let the offense win it. That being said, this team is loaded with athletes who will look to make game changing plays for this team. Junior Tyrell Taylor will take over at the “Rush” end position. Taylor is very quick with an explosive first step; he has the ability to get by defenders and should put up big numbers this season. Linebacker Steven Jenkins is in position to have a very good senior season after posting 79 tackles with 2 sacks last season despite missing time. The secondary improved last season compared to its final season in the Big 12. Deshazor Everett will start at one corner position. Everett recorded 56 tackles and 2 interceptions last season and will be asked to defend the number one receiver. TAILGATING TIME Gordos Fajita Nachos! Serves: 6-8 Ingredients: 1 ½ lbs flank steak, or 1 lb any flavor GORDO’S Cheese Dip 1 bag of tortilla chips Marinade: 1/4 cup fresh lime juice ¼ cup minced fresh cilantro 2 T. olive oil 2 T. Running Backs
1. Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay: Despite losing Greg Jennings in the offseason, Rodgers is poised to lead the stat sheet again in 2013. Using both his legs and accurate passing Rodgers can light up defenses; nobody is better than Aaron Rodgers at quarterback right now.
1. Adrian Peterson. Minnesota: The number one fantasy player entering 2013 is Adrian Peterson. Peterson was close to breaking the all-time rushing record last season and will likely put up similar numbers this year. Peterson is squarely in his prime and figures to be the top fantasy player at year’s end.
2. Drew Brees. New Orleans: With Sean Peyton back as head coach Drew Brees is sure to have a monster season. Brees has his top receivers returning and a healthy Jimmy Graham will go a long way to ensuring that Brees will stay atop the fantasy boards this fall.
2. Arian Foster. Houston: If Foster can stay healthy he will be a top back this fall. Foster can run it in between the tackles and has the speed to bounce it outside when needed. Foster has had injury problems in the past but when he is healthy he is an outstanding receiver and runner.
3. Peyton Manning. Denver: Manning returned to form last season proving to everyone that his neck was healthy enough to dominate. This season Manning will have more weapons around him than ever before including Wes Welker. Expect high point totals from Manning.
3. Ray Rice. Baltimore: With the departure of Anquan Boldin this offseason, the door is open for Rice to receive more touches. Rice is a talented pass catcher who is utilized underneath frequently. He is often a strong runner who will benefit from an improved offensive line.
4. Tom Brady. New England: Tom Brady is undoubtedly still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He will be hurt this year, fantasy-wise, by a lack of talent around him. Losing Wes Welker hurt and without his top two tight ends, Brady does not have enough options to be a top fantasy quarterback.
4. Marshawn Lynch. Seattle: Marshawn Lynch has always been a strong runner despite teams stacking the box against them. Now with Russell Wilson under center teams can no longer afford to sell out against the run. Translation: a stellar fantasy season from Lynch.
5. Matthew Stafford. Detroit: Any quarterback that has Calvin Johnson to throw to will put up big fantasy numbers. The only knock on Stafford is that he has a tendency to get hurt during the course of a season. If Stafford can remain healthy he will be a top fantasy quarterback.
5. Doug Martin. Tampa Bay: Martin was one of the top running backs in the league last season as a rookie. Tampa Bay’s offensive line is one of the best in the league in the run game and Martin surely benefits. With a year under his belt look for Martin to establish himself as a star in 2013.
6. Cam Newton. Carolina: Cam Newton continues to improve into a winning quarterback, but he is already a great fantasy option. The read option offense allows Newton to use his legs to pick up yardage; Steve Smith is still a great number one option and the receivers have been upgraded this offseason. 7. Matt Ryan. Atlanta: Matt Ryan has huge potential in 2013 as a fantasy quarterback. Any player who has Julio Jones, Roddy White, and Tony Gonzalez to throw to will not be wanting for options. Take into account that new running back Steven Jackson has great hands out of the backfield and Ryan could put up massive numbers. 8. Colin Kaepernick. San Francisco: It has yet to be seen what Kaepernick can do with a full season, but if his play last year is any indication he could be special. A duel-threat quarterback is always a plus in fantasy football. Kaepernick is not only fast, he is a talented player who has weapons all around him. 9. Robert Griffin III. Washington: Assuming his knee is 100% healthy RGIII is a great fantasy option. Another duel-threat quarterback, RGIII is not only a terrific runner, but a first rate passer as well. His numbers could potentially take a hit as Alfred Morris is turning into one of the top backs in the league, but he should be able to get his share of points. 10. Eli Manning. New York: Eli always can be counted on to put up big numbers. If his receivers can manage to stay healthy he could be in the top 5. Hakeem Nicks, arguably the team’s best receiver, has yet to play a full season since entering the league. Victor Cruz just signed a contract extension and will make up the other half of a great tandem.
6. C.J. Spiller. Buffalo: Spiller is Buffalo’s top offensive weapon this year. Fred Jackson is gone from the team making this C.J. Spiller’s backfield. While E.J. Manuel is learning the offense at quarterback expect Spiller to get a lot of touches early on. 7. Alfred Morris. Washington: Coming from nowhere Alfred Morris had a fantastic rookie campaign last season. Morris is a great runner and a deft pass catcher out of the backfield. With RGIII’s knee in question, Morris will likely get the ball often in the first couple of months. 8. Jamaal Charles. Kansas City: Jamaal Charles is a great running back who has been bogged down by an impotent offense. The lightning quick Charles is often facing 8 or 9 men in the box because of the recent string of bad quarterbacks. 9. LeSean McCoy. Philadelphia: New head coach Chip Kelly loves to utilize the running game in his high octane offense. That is great news for LeSean McCoy who has put up very high numbers in spite of former head coach, Andy Reid’s refusal to run the football. McCoy is a great runner and a very good pass catcher out of the backfield. 10. Chris Johnson. Tennessee: Although he has had a few down seasons, Tennessee has spent a lot of money this offseason fortifying the offensive line. With a better line in front of him Johnson may be able to become a top running back again. He certainly is still one of the fastest players in the game. 11. Trent Richardson. Cleveland: The lone bright spot on the Browns offense last season was Richardson. Although he has yet to live up to his potential, Richardson is still a very good running back who should only continue to grow.
FANTASY 12. Steven Jackson. Atlanta: Jackson has been extremely consistent during his time in the NFL. He has posted 8 straight 1,000 rush seasons in a row and is now joining an offense that will give him plenty of room to operate. With great receivers playing in Atlanta, don’t expect Jackson to face many 8 man boxes. 13. Stevan Ridley. New England: Ridley came on in a big way last season for the Patriots. With almost no other offensive talent, aside from Tom Brady, around him Ridley is likely to have another big year. The Patriots have been without a top back for a while and seem fine with giving Ridley his touches. 14. Frank Gore. San Francisco: Frank Gore has been a top fantasy running back for a long time. With a much better offense around him now, teams can no longer focus on only stopping the run. Gore will likely benefit from the play of quarterback, Collin Kaepernick. 15. Matt Forte. Chicago: Forte experienced a bit of a down season as far as pass catching is concerned. With a lack of other receiving options, Jay Cutler will look towards Forte more often in a check down role. Because a lot of Forte’s value comes from his ability as a receiver this is good news.
Wide Receivers 1. Calvin Johnson. Detroit: Without a doubt Calvin Johnson is the top receiver in the NFL. A year after breaking Jerry Rice’s receiving record he is showing no signs of slowing down. Johnson has the size to battle defenders and the speed to run right by them. As long as Matthew Stafford stays healthy Johnson will continue to put up high numbers. 2. Dez Bryant. Dallas: Dez Bryant came on in a huge way in the second half of last season. It seems as though the receiver is finally reaching his massive potential. Gun slinging Tony Romo will have no issues getting him the football and if Bryant can stay on the field he will have a great fantasy season. 3. A.J. Green. Cincinnati: No receiver is as fluid as Green is in his route running. Green has the ability to stretch the field deep or break away from defenders in his cuts. Entering his third season Green has already established himself as one of the best in the game; an emerging running game will only benefit Green this season. 4. Brandon Marshall. Chicago: Playing with Jay Cutler again last season, Brandon Marshall put up monster numbers. Marshall caught 118 balls for 1,508 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has shown no signs of slowing down and he is clearly Cutler’s go to receiver.
being on the field. 7. Demaryius Thomas. Denver: The top receiver in a Peyton Manning lead offense is sure to put up big numbers. Although the addition of Wes Welker will take away from the number of catches Thomas may have, he will likely be open more often and have bigger plays. 8. Vincent Jackson. Tampa Bay: Jackson had huge numbers in his first season with the Buccaneers, 72 catches for 1,384 yards and 8 touchdowns. Despite inconsistent quarterback play, Jackson still figures to be one of the top receivers in the NFL this fall. 9. Larry Fitzgerald. Arizona: Fitzgerald had a rare down year last season but that was more due to poor quarterback play than regression by the receiver. Carson Palmer will be behind center for the Cardinals this season and that alone should help Fitzgerald. Still a top receiver, Fitzgerald just needs a quarterback who can get him the ball. 10. Victor Cruz. New York: Signing a contract extension this offseason, Victor Cruz is in his prime. The receiver has become a favorite target of Eli Manning and is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. Fellow receiver Hakeem Nicks is very talented as well and will help keep double teams off of Cruz. 11. Andre Johnson. Houston: Johnson is a massive receiver who has no trouble shrugging off defenders. Unfortunately Johnson seems to be losing a step in terms of straight away speed and will need to rely more on route running. With a competent quarterback in Matt Schaub, Johnson should have no problem producing numbers. 12. Wes Welker. Denver: It’s not often that a receiver can leave Tom Brady and go to another hall of fame quarterback, but that was the case for Welker who is now catching passes from Peyton Manning. Welker and Manning seem like the perfect fit and Welker, although he has lost a step, seems poised for a big season. 13. Randall Cobb. Green Bay: A budding young receiver, Cobb will likely take over Greg Jennings’ role as the top receiver on the Packers’ offense. Cobb has a strong receiving corps around him to ensure that he won’t face any double teams this season.
5. Julio Jones. Atlanta: Julio Jones is an emerging superstar at the receiver position. Playing in one of the most potent offenses will only help his numbers. With Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez on the field defenses can’t focus solely on Jones. Jones is a burner who can torch defenses deep and has a large frame to compete for balls.
14. Marques Colston. New Orleans: Colston has quietly been a great receiver since he has come into the league. Playing in a pass happy offense led by Drew Brees certainly has benefitted the receiver. Colston hasn’t shown signs of slowing down and will likely improve on last season now that Sean Peyton is back.
6. Roddy White. Atlanta: The other receiver in the talented Atlanta duo, Roddy White, is Matt Ryan’s favorite target. While Julio Jones is younger and more athletic, Roddy White has learned to find the open spot and settle in it. Just as Jones will benefit from Roddy White, White will benefit from Julio Jones
15. Hakeem Nicks. New York: Nicks is a high-risk high-reward player. When he is healthy he is one of the top receivers in the NFL. The problem is he has yet to play a full season since he has come into the league. Nicks can stretch the field and has tremendous hands; he will put up plenty of points while healthy.
FANTASY Tight Ends 1. Jimmy Graham. New Orleans: Graham was dealing with injuries all last season yet still had a fantastic year. Entering 2013 Graham is fully healthy and ready to turn into the explosive playmaker he was in 2011. Graham is a top red zone target and also creates a mismatch with almost any linebacker or safety. 2. Tony Gonzalez. Atlanta: Tony Gonzalez continues to defy all logic and looks to be as good as ever. A first-ballet Hall of Famer, Gonzalez is a key piece in the Atlanta offense. Gonzalez is in peak physical condition and uses his veteran savvy to find the holes in the defense. Gonzalez is a favorite red zone target of Matt Ryan. 3. Rob Gronkowski. New England: If Gronkowski wasn’t going to miss time this season he would be the number one tight end. As it is Gronkowski will likely miss the first 4-5 games of the 2013 season. When healthy, Gronkowski is an elite tight end who creates mismatches all over the field and has a knack for finding the end zone. 4. Jason Witten. Dallas: Although Witten is getting older he has still found ways to be productive. One of Tony Romo’s favorite targets, Witten is one of the best check down options in the league. Witten has sure hands and is very good at running after the catch. 5. Vernon Davis. San Francisco: Davis is still a physical specimen at the tight end position. Davis can create mismatches against linebackers and stretch the middle of the field. Davis is a good red zone presence for Collin Kaepernick. 6. Owen Daniels. Houston: One of the favorite targets of Matt Schaub, Owen Daniels battled injuries last season but enters 2013 healthy. A savvy router runner, Daniels knows how to find the soft spot in a zone defense and turn it into a big gain. 7. Kyle Rudolph. Minnesota: Rudolph had an astounding 9 touchdowns last season, a number that is sure to come down in 2013. Rudolph is a favorite target of Christian Ponder and figures to get a good share of looks in the red zone this season. 8. Greg Olsen. Carolina: Olsen has benefited from the lack of receiving options in Carolina and essentially served as the number two receiver for Cam Newton. Olsen is large and fast enough the beat middle linebackers down the field.
Kickers
1. Stephen Gostkowski. New England: Playing in New England Gostkowski will see plenty of extra point opportunities and the offense is often in field goal range. Last season he was 11 for 15 on attempts from 40 or more yards, but the real value is the amount of extra points Gostkowski will attempt in a season. 2. Matt Bryant. Atlanta: Another kicker who will get a tremendous amount of extra points is Matt Bryant. Atlanta has one of the top offenses in the NFL couple that with Matt Bryant’s strong leg and he will often be within his range. Bryant hit all 5 of his attempts from over 50 yards last season.
3. Blair Walsh. Minnesota: Walsh set an NFL record last season by hitting on all 10 of his kicks from over 50 yards. As a rookie Walsh took the NFL by storm and with an offense that can be stagnant and a great dome environment, Walsh looks poised to have another great kicking season. 4. Justin Tucker. Baltimore: The rookie was very impressive for Baltimore last season sending them to the AFC Championship with a clutch overtime kick. With a great offense in Baltimore kicks should be plentiful for Tucker again in 2013. 5. Matt Prater. Denver: Prater benefits greatly from playing in the thin air in Denver. For his career Prater is 75 percent on kicks from 50 yards or greater, the best in NFL history. With a strong offense led by Peyton Manning, Prater should be in field goal range often.
Defenses
1. Seattle: Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett have been added to a defensive line that will get Chris Clemons back from injury this season. A strong pass rush coupled with the league’s best secondary will make points very hard to come by when playing the Seahawks. 2. San Francisco: San Francisco has the most potent pass rush in the NFL. Aldon Smith posted 19.5 sacks last season to threaten Michael Strahan’s NFL record. Justin Smith is a strong pass rusher in his own right on the other side. Patrick Willis is still the leader of this defense and will lead a strong linebacker corps that is very stout against the run. 3. Houston: With Brian Cushing back from injury this season, Houston will have a very talented defense in 2013. J.J. Watt is one of the premier pass rushers in the NFL and gives opposing quarterbacks very little time with the football. The signing of Ed Reed will give the secondary a big boost. 4. Denver: The loss of Elvis Dumervil will certainly hurt the team, but he was not the only playmaker on the Denver Defense. Von Miller is one of the best young linebackers and excels at rushing the quarterback. The team sacked the passer a league-high 52 times last season, and the secondary received a boost with the signing of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. 5. Chicago: The Bears have a very solid overall defense. Julius Peppers is still performing at a very high level after recording 11.5 sacks last season. Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings lead a very good secondary. And Lance Briggs will become the leader at the linebacker position now that Brian Urlacher is gone.
