Dear Goshen College community and friends, What a privilege it is for me to reflect on the last academic year and consider the many ways that your generosity has continued to shape the educational opportunities and experiences of our students. Consider a few highlights of the significant changes and accomplishments that we celebrated in the 2017-18 academic year — my first as president — here on campus:

We hired Dr. Ann Vendrely as our new vice president for academic affairs and academic dean.
•
Academically, we added a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program in partnership with Eastern Mennonite University, as well as a sport management major, a game development minor and a new Marine Biology Semester.
•
We welcomed our largest incoming class since 2009, enrolling a total of 215 first-year students, a 16 percent increase from last year’s class. Continuing our commitment to environmental stewardship, we had our lowest year of energy consumption in over 25 years. We received the 2018 Partners for Clean Air award from the Michiana Area Council of Governments (MACOG). And we were so pleased to partner with College Mennonite Church to jointly install the first solar panels on campus: a 924-panel solar array, completely offsetting the ChurchChapel building’s electric bill. We recognized four of our outstanding alumni with alumni awards during Homecoming Weekend: Sheri Hartzler ’73 of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Philip Thomas ’87 of Goshen; Nicole Cober Bauman ’08 of Elkhart,
As well during Homecoming Weekend, we dedicated the Aschliman Peace Arts Collection in the basement of the Good Library in honor of Kathryn Aschliman, professor emerita of education. We celebrated several anniversaries: 50 years of the Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center and 20 years of the Campus Center for Young Children — created in partnership with College Mennonite Church. And, last, but not least, I was so very grateful to take office at the beginning of November and for the wonderful inauguration week in February. What good memories still linger!
I want you to know that all gifts — large and small — make a difference, whether to a specific project, to our annual operating or to fund needed scholarships in perpetuity. Goshen College Giving Clubs The combined giving power of GC giving club members is truly phenomenal, whether they join the Builders at a minimum gift of $1 a day or the President’s Circle at $25,000 per year or more. Together, the members of these giving clubs provided $1,256,611 in unrestricted giving for the fiscal year 2017-18. The tradition of giving clubs took root at Goshen College in the 1960s, when a group of donors decided to begin giving $1,000 annually to the Goshen College Fund. Five separate clubs now support the GC Fund. These “unrestricted” gifts support every student and department on campus and allow the college to respond to needs as they arise. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of all these friends and alumni.
