“I’m studying physical education with a health minor, and I’m also involved in cross country, track and the low voices choir at Goshen,” says current student Diego Torres. “As I thought about it, I realized that Goshen was the best choice for me. Excellent music, great education and the opportunity to play sports, which I really wanted to do.” “Cross country and track have had a big impact on me. It’s a really good team aspect, and it’s great seeing from the older guys what it’s like to work hard and be a leader. I think the whole experience has shown me how close our team can be – we’re really supportive of each other.” Diego sang in the men’s choir in high school, so continuing this in college was a natural transition for him. “At Goshen we have Sauder Concert
Hall, which is one of the best concert halls in the country. Getting to sing there and see the community come out and watch our performances, and just seeing how much music at Goshen means to people; it’s been an awesome experience.” Diego explains how his involvement in music and sports at Goshen helps him to live in the moment. “When I’m at cross country, I’m not thinking about the homework I have to do; I’m just focusing on what I’m doing right now. And music is the same thing – sometimes I’ll be stressed about other things I have going on, but I try to stay in the moment and enjoy it, and give all my effort. I think just realizing what is important in that moment, and focusing on that, has been a great learning experience for me.”

Olivia Clemens is studying computer science and mathematics at Goshen, following a tradition that dates as far back as her grandparents. “I’m a legacy student. My grandfather went here, my parents met here and my brother graduated last year.” However, studying at Goshen wasn’t always her intention. “I didn’t want to go to the same college that my parents did. But I eventually visited and was like, wow. One of the reasons I chose Goshen is for the social atmosphere. It’s a small school and people are just so nice. There is less of an emphasis on social status and how you look, and more of a focus on your character as a person.” Olivia also enjoys the close-knit relationships that Goshen’s small size allows her to have with professors in the computer science program. “I email regularly with David and Jeanette (my professors), and I regularly go into their office to ask questions, do homework or just say hi.
Having a personal relationship with the professors has been really important, and they really help make connections for you.” Olivia spent a summer working at a web hosting company, Mennonite.net, as part of her studies. “My coworkers were other students from the computer science department. There’s a strong connection between local companies and the college – it was a really good experience.” Most of all, Olivia appreciates the holistic educational experience at Goshen College. “No matter what club or sport you are a part of, the communities are interconnected. There is so much more about my experience at Goshen than just the computer science department – it really rounds you out. Because of the liberal arts approach, I am a student with an education in many different things, but a focus in computer science.”

Students who engage in one of our many handson, real-world learning opportunities often say they learned a lot more about themselves and others than they ever could have imagined. “I took so much more from Nicaragua than I gave,” says recent graduate Clinton Stroble. “They taught me so much about how to be a good man. Being in a space where I wasn’t the dominant race, or language, or ideology – I was truly the minority in every way. I had to learn to move through a world that isn’t mine, and that is super powerful.” Clinton explains that this type of expanded perspective is more importnat now than ever. “No matter your political beliefs, I feel like some conversations are so difficult for a lot of people because they don’t spend time outside their bubble. It’s important to have a place where you feel safe, but you also have to step outside of that, and be consciously aware of the world around us and how other people see our lives. That’s what the trip really showed me.” Clinton studied peace, justice and conflict studies at Goshen, and now works alongside police and law
enforcement officers as a Community Supervision Officer for the state of Georgia; a role he says his Goshen education prepared him for perfectly. “It’s important to understand what people need, and then how to be able to give that to them. My degree has taught me to look past the words, and instead think about what people need from us. And what they need is to be heard, and for me to see them, and speak into their reality.” He also describes how his time in Nicaragua contributed to his ability to work with others who come from different backgrounds: “If I didn’t spend my time in Nicaragua, I wouldn’t be able to communicate with people who don’t look like me, think like me, live like me.” “Goshen did a really good job of challenging me. I appreciated every challenge they sent my way to become a better person, athlete and learner. You won’t be able to stay under the rug at Goshen College, but they’ll push you to grow – and that’s exactly the place you want to be.”
