Dear Goshen Parks Patron, I have been enjoying Goshen’s parks since I was growing up. It is so exciting to see how our Parks & Recreation Department has expanded in both number of parks and number of programs. I have come to the point in my life where I am especially enjoying watching my children utilize the fantastic parks and more that I grew up with in Goshen. Superintendent Tanya Heyde and staff are working hard at expanding and maintaining our parks throughout this community.

You are undoubtedly aware of the serious flooding in Goshen in February 2018. The combination of heavy snowmelt and torrential rains resulted in unprecedented flooding in the Maple City. Particularly hard–hit were many of our parks, as often they are situated at lower elevations.

I am grateful for the dedication and perseverance of the Goshen Parks staff and other City employees who worked diligently to repair the damage and restore our parks to the condition they were in prior to the flooding.

This is all part of the continuing effort to enhance our community’s quality of life. Please come out and experience your parks this spring and summer. You will quickly realize why my family loves them, and you will learn just one of the many reasons why I am proud to call Goshen home.

Dear Goshen Resident, I am pleased to invite you to explore the 2019 Goshen Parks & Recreation Activity Guide—again in both English and Spanish. This edition covers the rest of the year instead of only six months. The park staff and I are eager to offer an impressive lineup of fun, enriching and quality-of-life experiences for all ages.

The Park Department now offers live, online reservations of park facilities and registration for park programs. Please visit our website (www.goshenindiana.org/parks-rec) to utilize this new system. You also may continue to call 5342901 to register and to make reservations.

Due to the 2018 flooding, we in the Park Department recently moved to our new location at 524 East Jackson Street. The new building is one block south of East Plymouth Avenue on South Ninth Street, just past Water Tower Park. We are now settled into the new space and invite you to pay us a visit!

We take great pride in offering quality programs and maintaining the best parks, facilities and programs possible. It is our privilege to continue to serve the citizens of this wonderful community, and we hope visitors to the Maple City take a few moments to see how these resources can enrich their lives too.

Comfort Stations Most park restroom facilities are open to the public from April 15 to October 15, from 8 am to 9 pm. The restrooms at Abshire Cabin and at the warming house in Shanklin Park, however, remain open year-round.

Splash Parks Walnut Park Splash Pad, on Goshen’s north side at East Oakridge Avenue between 5th and 6th streets, and Rieth Park Splash Pad, on Goshen’s south side on 13th Street between Iowa and Illinois streets, will function daily May 27– August 31 from 12 noon to 8 pm (weather permitting).

Dedication Program Donations and dedications of trees, plants, flowers, park benches and picnic tables are all welcomed for the Goshen parks. Park Department staff provides planting and

perpetual care or replacement of plants. Fees cover the cost of the contribution and plaques. Please contact the Goshen Park Department, for available species and current prices, at 534-2901.

Adopt-A-Park Individuals, families, clubs and businesses are encouraged to Adopt-A-Park and help with maintenance, litter pickup and plant preservation. For more information, contact the Goshen Park Department at 534-2901.

Vandalism Vandalism in our parks can be a concern, as well as have a negative impact on our budget. It isn’t possible for us to be in the parks at all times, so a few extra “eyes” to notify us about vandalism is very helpful. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Bird Walks School Programs Schedule a field trip to the Rieth Interpretive Center for your school group, club, scouts, home school, church group, seniors group or whomever. Primary Purpose The Rieth Interpretive Center’s primary purpose is education, with a focus on interpreting the natural, cultural, and industrial heritage of our community. Through its programs and its use opportunities, the Center exemplifies the concept of reconciliation between humanity and environment. The Center provides universal access to all of its educational opportunities.

Hours: Open to the public on Tuesday–Thursday, 10 am–4 pm, and open Fridays and Mondays by appointment for programs, activities and events. Located at Millrace Park, 410 West Plymouth Avenue.

Goshen Parks Forestry: Trees

Rieth Interpretive Center Canopy Goal for 2045

The City of Goshen is working to officially adopt an Urban Tree Canopy Goal of “45 by ‘45”—45% canopy cover by 2045. This will roughly double the amount of shade created by our trees (measured at 22% in 2013). Why? The quality of life we enjoy in Goshen is positively affected by the presence of living trees. As climate patterns continue to shift, trees will become more and more important for keeping Goshen a comfortable place to live.

Trees create a surprising variety of benefits for our community: environmental, economic, social and aesthetic. Residents from across Goshen have come together to help explain how these benefits affect our city’s well-being in four short videos, which can be viewed at https://goshenindiana.org/forestry.

In order to achieve our goal of “45 by ‘45,” we will need to plant about 2,000 trees a year until 2045. This means most of us will need to learn about planting and caring for trees and appreciating their benefits. The Goshen Forestry Division and Goshen Tree Board are launching the Goshen Tree Canopy Goal at the City’s annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 26, 2019.

In addition to Trees for Goshen, a local non-profit whose mission is to make this goal financially accessible to all of Goshen’s residents (https://www. treesforgoshen.org/), we are looking for sponsors to support this launch and ongoing project with donations for promotional materials. are a vital part of Goshen’s life and infrastructure. Trees provide everyone with some invaluable services—and they do these services more cheaply and efficiently than human designs. People need trees!

The City of Goshen has two tree programs, which it offers through the Goshen Parks & Recreation Department, to help residents care for our “urban forest.”

1. The City will split the cost of tree maintenance, including trimming and removal, 50/50, for trees that are in the City’s right of way. The city forester can help determine right of way.

2. The City will split the cost of planting a new, 2-inch diameter, 10- to 15-foot-tall tree if planted in the right of way. Resident portion is $80, which includes planting.

The city forester will be glad to consult.

Volunteer Opportunities and Support In addition, there are various volunteer opportunities in the public woods of Goshen. Invasive plant species removal, trail maintenance, tree planting and trash cleanup are some of the major ongoing projects within Goshen’s urban forest.

The Municipal Tree Nursery is one of the sites for volunteer work. While there is sweat involved in all these efforts, there is also a lot of fun, and especially the opportunity to be outside, learning about the wide world of trees! Contact the forester at 537-0986 to arrange volunteer projects.

Goshen now has 21.3 miles of pedestrian/bike paths and trails? The Maple City Greenway consists of 17 a network of various bicycle and pedestrian trails throughout Goshen that link homes, parks, schools, the library and the downtown area. Thirteen of these trails are described below (also see maps at right).

Shanklin Pool Whether your summer fun includes water slides, diving boards, lap swims, open swims, swim lessons, pool parties or just sunbathing, Shanklin Pool is your summer hot spot! Our concession stand is open during public swim hours with a full menu. The pool is open daily May 25–August 4, Saturdays and Sundays through August 25. Opening and closing dates are weather-dependent.

Organizations must schedule group visits with the pool manager in advance; call 533-7616 or the Park Office at 534-2901. A Federal Tax ID Number must be presented prior to the visit in order to receive the group rate. Otherwise, the full admission price will be charged—no exceptions. At least one adult per 10 youths is required.

Swim Lessons Red Cross-Certified Beginner to Advanced Swim Lessons

Swim lessons are offered under the instruction of certified instructors and their assistants. Classes follow the American Red Cross standards, focusing on levels of water exploration, primary skills, stroke readiness and stroke development.

Class space is limited, so please register early to ensure availability. Adult lessons and specific stroke training are available upon request; call 533-7616. Beginner lessons are for ages 5+ and are $55 per session.

Aquaman, rated PG 13 When: Saturday, June 15 at 8 pm Fee: $3 per person Guests can float with the aid of water noodles (not provided), relax on the floatables (not provided) or lounge on the poolside chairs while you enjoy a popular familyfriendly movie. No need to register. Doors will open at 7:30 pm. Pool rules will apply to all patrons.

Please note: The diving board and slide will be closed during and after the movie. NO OPEN SWIM DURING THE MOVIE. Pool capacity is limited to the first 200 guests. Dive-in movies are not available for rental or private events. The concession stand will be open during the movie.

Red Cross-Certified Parent and Child Swim Lessons Our skilled instructors provide a fun learning environment for toddlers while they explore the pool. Swim diapers are required and may be purchased at the pool. During Class A, a parent will accompany the child in the water. During Class B, a parent will accompany 3-year-old children for the first few classes to assist in transition. Fee is $55 per session.

Water Aerobics This water exercise class has something for everyone and is suitable for all fitness levels. The class includes a morning stretch, thermal warm-up aerobic training, as well as strength, core training, flexibility and balance. Because the water creates more resistance than land, this workout is efficient and easy on the joints, and participants get a great workout without sweating. Various water levels are used to create variety and to alleviate the need to swim. Your instructor has 25 years of experience and is trained by the Aquatic Exercise Association, an internationally acclaimed organization with the highest standards. She believes that exercise and fitness are crucial to each individual’s physical, psychological and emotional health.

You may register at the Goshen Park Department Office or at class with your instructor, but please call ahead to ensure class is meeting at the regularly scheduled time. Register for the entire summer session for $80, or take advantage of dropping in anytime throughout the session and pay our drop-in rate of $6 per class. For group rates, call Kim at 5342901.

Dance Programs Dance attire varies by instructor and by the different forms of dance. At registration, please request a copy of the dance attire requirements for your class. Dancers must be the minimum required age by August 1 of the session year.

Creative Dance

A class for students ages 4 and 5. It will cover dance warmups, stretching and beginning technique for Jazz, Ballet and Modern. This class is great for children who are aspiring gymnasts, budding ballerinas or for those who simply love to move with music.

Modern/Ballet Students ages 5–7 will learn age-adjusted ballet and modern dance technique. Your child will learn proper body alignment and develop flexibility, coordination and grace. Your child will also experience applying their own movement thoughts to the art of improvisation. Classes will

facilitate the joy of dance and appreciation for beauty, as well as build well-balanced, healthy respect and discipline.

The difficulty level will increase with Beginning Modern II and Intermediate Modern.

Youth Programs In our program, we teach cheerleading and pompom techniques, jumps, stunts, cheers, chants, dance steps and voice projection. Coaches choreograph a competition routine, which all students learn and practice throughout the session in preparation for our Cheer Competition. Drawing and Donuts: Create Your Own Canvas Art! Join us on Saturday, April 27 from 9 to 11 am at Rieth Interpretive Center for a morning of fun, family and art. Your family “pair” will collaborate to complete a masterpiece for you to display in your home or give as a gift. The family pair consists of one parent/adult, and one child (ages 4–7). The class will consist of step-by-step instruction and guidance from our artist for you to complete a masterpiece to take home.

All supplies to complete your artwork will be provided with the exception of a smock or apron. And, of course, donuts will be served! Preregistration is required and is being accepted at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office through April 26. Fee for the class is $40 per pair.

During these “digs” the junior paleontologists will experience the wonder of excavating fossils, piecing them together and learning about the mysteries of our living past. Program registration includes skeleton, hammer, chisel and fact sheet.

Each dig has different subjects, so enjoy the programs with all new materials and learn the similarities and differences among the featured creatures each session. Program meets on Saturdays, 9 am–12 noon, at Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 West Plymouth Avenue. For ages 4+ (ages 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult). Fee is $20 per program.

Little Monets, Ages 5–8 Have your children ever painted with their toes, looked for shapes in the clouds, or made their own play-dough?

We often want our children to grow up so quickly that we forget to encourage them to keep their imagination strong and alive. Around ages 5–6 is when we really begin to see children’s art become more realistic, so this makes it the ideal time to encourage them with new skills around art and their creativity. In this four-week course, your child will draw and paint successfully with the right mix of individualized instruction, encouragement and motivation. We always expect the children to clean up their “creative area” after they’re done; sometimes this takes a bit of time at the end of class.

Our hope is that your child will leave each session saying, “Mommy, I saw a dolphin in the clouds,” or “Daddy, it’s OK if I only draw a circle, as long as I make it the best circle ever!” Class will meet at Rieth Interpretive Center Thursdays, 5:30–6:30 pm, April 11, 18, 25 and May 2. Fee for this class is $60 for the four-week session.

I Try Sailing This nautical program is a free introductory sailing clinic for youths ages 8–15. Come see what it takes to sail and discover a new interest! This is a great introduction to our Sailing Camp (right) being offered June 17–21. The I Try Sailing clinic will meet at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, on Saturday, June 8 from 11 am to 2 pm. Students must be able to swim. Equipment and materials provided. Sailing Camp This camp is focused on introducing youths ages 8–15 to the sport of sailing. The camp teaches a new skill base consisting of nautical terminology, parts of a sailboat, knot tying and teamwork. Plus, there is water sailing time.

This camp empowers boys and girls to do great things on their own. The camp will offer students meaningful opportunities for building self-confidence and self-discovery while cultivating an appreciation of our natural resources.

It brings young people to the outdoors, connecting them with nature to measure wind speed and direction and to be aware of weather conditions. Camp meets Monday, June 17–Friday, June 21 at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East. Pre-registration is required at the Goshen Park Office through June 14. Cost of the camp is $110. Discovery Day Camp Discovery Day Camp is a fun and exciting summertime camp for children ages 5–12. The camp begins June 3 and will be staffed through August 2 (or according to the Goshen Community Schools calendar). Camp opens at 7 am and closes at 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. This is a full-time summer camp; just one week of vacation is allowed to every camper. Each of the nine weeks of camp has its own theme, during which campers participate in games, activities and off-campus field trips related to that week’s theme.

All Discovery Day Campers enjoy the Shanklin Pool on a regular basis. The schedule also incorporates some of the Park Department’s summer activities into Discovery Day Camp, including Soccer Camp, Art Camp and the Kids’ & Teens’ TryAthlon. All summer activities are designed for the introductory level and introduce campers to new activities or expand their existing interests, all the while experiencing new life skills.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Ever wonder what it’s like to take a breath underwater?

Or what it’s like to be a fish? Find out at Shanklin Pool on Saturday, May 25 and Saturday, July 6 from 8 to 10 am. Join dive instructor Greg Stone and other master divers who will be on hand to let you experience the underwater world. All equipment will be provided. Bring your swimsuit and towel, and be ready to get wet. This one-day introduction to scuba (which stands for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) is just $5! Pre-registration is required at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office by May 24 and July 5.

For ages 10 to adult.

This introductory session will give participants a basic understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu history, theory and techniques. Classes will include a warm-up, stretching and technical instruction. Self-defense techniques and movement drills, without striking, will also be taught. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is unique in relation to most other self-defense systems as it focuses on use of leverage and proper technique, taking the attacker to the ground and defusing the situation by use of joint locks and holds. Class is taught by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Goshen instructor Bryan Barrick. Pre-registration is required at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office by June 7. Fee for seven weeks is $25. Scuba Classes Learn the fundamentals of scuba diving, including equipment selection, how water pressure affects you when diving, planning your dives and safety. Upon completing the two-day course—or when a level of proficiency is achieved— participants will schedule four open-water dives with the instructor. Divers ages 15 and older who complete the course and open-water dives will earn PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Open Water Diver certification. Individuals ages 10–14 are eligible to achieve Junior Open Water certification.

Pickleball

Beginning Fly Fishing

What is pickleball?! It’s a sweet sport with a sour name, a craze that is sweeping the nation. It combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. The game is played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton-size court, with a slightly modified tennis net, paddles and a plastic ball.

Learn when and why fly fishing is the right tool for the task.

Gain an understanding of what weight fly rod and fly line to use for various types of fishing. Learn a little bit about leaders and tippets, as well as line and fly types, fly tying, basic knots, bugs, and fly fishing safety and etiquette.

Outdoor pickleball courts are located at Model Elementary School, 412 South Greene Road in Goshen (open seasonally).

If you want to learn more or see what pickleball mania is all about, you may also join us for indoor play at a Goshen Community Schools gymnasium, starting in November. For more information, including dates and times, please contact Tyler or Kim, 534-2901.

Instruction will include basic casting techniques and the five casting principles that will help you become more proficient in handling different casting situations. Fly casting is not difficult, but it does use different motions than other types of fishing.

This inviting class is an all-levels, one-hour yoga practice designed to create fluidity, flexibility and strength. These classes take place on a brick patio at the north end of the millrace, next to the Millrace Powerhouse and John Mishler’s Dream Chaser sculpture.

Men’s Basketball This league plays on Wednesday evenings, November 6 through February 12. Teams are guaranteed a minimum of nine games and an end-of-season tournament. Nine regularseason games will be played at Goshen High School (see Note below), along with a post-season tournament. Preregistration is currently being accepted at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office through October 18 or until the league is full. In order to secure a spot in the league, the registration and roster form with a paid entry fee must be collected at the Park Office. Fee is $580 per team. Adult Basketball Open Gym Enjoy some Wednesday evening pick-up games during two sessions of Men’s 40 and Older Open Gym. Individuals play each Wednesday, 7–9 pm, November 6 to March 25, 2020 (see Note below), in a Goshen Community Schools gymnasium, to be announced.

Adult Ballroom Dance Join in the fun of learning to dance the Rumba, Fox Trot, Waltz and Swing—all while keeping fit! All ages are welcome. A perfect opportunity to prepare for upcoming spring and summer weddings and events. Register as an individual or with your friend, partner or spouse to make this class more enjoyable. Two class levels are available: Introductory for those beginning to explore dance and Intermediate for those who have some dance experience and have completed our Introductory class. Family Programs & Special Events Storybook Trail: Walk While Building Literacy Skills!

This active, interactive experience is designed in partnership with the Goshen Public Library. Storybook Trail is intended to combine the pleasures of reading with the benefits of walking together outdoors. The story begins on the south end of Rieth Interpretive Center at the arch on the trail connecting to the Classified Forest. Storybook Trail is open year-round and is free of charge! Maple City Fest in Celebration of Arbor Day A free family festival celebrating Arbor Day with a variety of events, entertainment and music. Activities begin at 4:30 pm on Friday, April 26 and last until about 7 pm. Join us for a spring evening packed full of fun. The event will take place indoors and outdoors at Schrock Pavilion in Shanklin Park, 411 West Plymouth Avenue. All ages welcome. Touch–A–Truck Date: Saturday, May 18 Time: 10 am–12 noon Location: Shanklin Park Description: This event provides a unique opportunity for children to explore vehicles of all types in one place. Vehicle types may include public service, emergency, utility, construction and just plain cool!

Children will be allowed to touch, climb on and ask questions about their favorite vehicles in a safe, supervised environment.

Accompanying personnel will teach the children about the vehicles and how they benefit us and our community. This event is free for all ages.

Mother/Son Superhero Dance Calling all superheroes! Join us at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds on Thursday, May 23 from 6 to 8 pm. Mark your calendar and get your tickets for this lively evening for mothers and sons! This night out will include refreshments, mementos and music provided by a professional DJ to help you dance the night away! Memory photos will be taken and available for purchase at the dance. The dance’s theme is “You Are My Superhero!” Tickets are $12 each and are sold in advance at the Park Office or online at www. goshenindiana.org/parks-rec. Seating is limited and fills quickly, so please get your tickets early to ensure availability.

2019 Public Walking Tours Sponsored by Goshen Historical Society Courthouse The last Wednesday of each month, beginning in April and continuing through October. Limited to eight persons per tour date. Participants will enter through the security checkpoint on the west side of the building and meet the tour guide in the lobby at 10 am.

Downtown Goshen Tentative dates are June 19, July 24 and August 21. Limited to 12 persons per tour date. Participants will meet at 9:30 am at the Goshen Historical Society Museum, 124 South Main Street.

Millrace Walk Tentative date is October 5. Limited to 14 persons.

15th Annual Kids’ & Teens’ Try-Athlon Saturday, July 13

Shanklin Park, 411 West Plymouth Avenue, Goshen Youth racers will swim 25 meters (one length of Shanklin Pool), bike 1.2 miles and run 1/2 mile. Teens ages 13–18 will swim for 75 meters (three lengths of Shanklin Pool), bike 1.2 miles and run 3.1 miles (5K). Each participant completes all three portions of the race, consecutively, with one final race result.

Packet pickup will be Wednesday, July 10 at Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 West Plymouth Avenue, from 12 noon to 6 pm. You must bring your bikes and helmets to receive a “passing” sticker for each. Sprint Triathlon and Mile Swim Event Saturday, August 17 Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, Goshen Attention, triathletes and swimmers: You definitely want to put this one on your calendar! A premier event in Goshen that draws athletes from our community and beyond. Our inaugural event in 2015 attracted 227 participants who represented 64 cities and eight states!

This is a special-destination triathlon event!

Sprint Triathlon This competitive but shorter sprint-distance race is great for both veteran and novice athletes: 500-Yard Swim, 15.8-Mile Bike, 5K Run

Mile Swim Event The Mile Swim Event will be set up in a rectangular, counter-clockwise course. Swimmers will be chip-timed, and timing will end upon crossing a timing mat placed on land at water’s edge of the swim exit.

Registration and Pricing Information This is a USA Triathlon-sanctioned triathlon. Upon registration each participant must either provide a current USAT membership or purchase a one-day license. Mile swimmers are not required to have or obtain a USAT license. Must be at least 13 years of age to participate.

Elkhart River Canoe and Fidler Pond Boat Rentals

Take a canoe trip on the Elkhart River or enjoy Fidler Pond with a canoe, kayak or pedal boat. Lifejackets are provided for ages 4 and up (not recommended for children ages 3 and under). An adult must accompany children under age 18.

Season: April 15–October 15 Maximum capacity per canoe: two adults and two children, or three adults.

• Plan accordingly! Please take note of the water currents, obstructions and weather.

• Glass containers are prohibited.

• Please do not litter. Pack it in, pack it out!

Fidler Pond Boat Rentals Visit the red barn at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, for your boat rentals.

• One- or 2-hour boat rentals.

• Rentals offered daily beginning at 8 am; all boat returns are 1 hour prior to dusk, so please plan accordingly.

Fidler Pond Boat Rental Fees • Canoe, kayak and pedal boat rental fees are $10 (tax included) per hour per boat.

• Fishing pole rental (for bank fishing) is $2/2 hours.

• Lifejackets are mandatory while on Fidler Pond; if you bring your own canoe or kayak and need a lifejacket, rental is $2/2 hours.

Elkhart River Canoe Trip • Shanklin Park on West Plymouth Avenue to Ox Bow County Park.

• Trip length is approximately 4 hours.

• Canoe trip is offered daily: 10 am departure, 2 pm pickup.

• Shuttle service is provided from Ox Bow Park back to Shanklin Park. Parents/guardians must supply car/booster seats for children.

• Visit the Goshen Park Department Administration Office 96 hours in advance to make your Elkhart River canoeing reservations.

Elkhart River Canoe Rental Fees • Rental fee is $20 + tax per canoe.

• Deposit is $20 per canoe + valid driver’s license.

Tyler S. Joldersma Skate Park Visit the skate park this season to check out the surfaced, quarter pipe, half pipe, street pipe, handrail box, grind rail and more! Lighted park located near the corner of Chicago and Lincoln avenues, adjacent to Rogers Park. The facility promotes the sports of inline skating, roller skating and skate boarding (no bikes, please). When using the skate park, please follow the rules posted. Remember, be courteous, pick up trash and respect the ramps; this is your park! The skate park is open daily from dawn until dusk while weather permits. No entry fee. Skate at your own risk.

Tubing and Cross-Country Skiing Tubes and cross-country skis are available to rent at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office, 524 East Jackson Street.

Neither Abshire Cabin nor the tubing hill is staffed. Season begins in December 2019 and ends March 31, 2020 (when there is sufficient snow cover).

Rieth Interpretive Center Meta Canopy para 2045

La ciudad de Goshen está trabajando para adoptar oficialmente un objetivo de copas de árboles urbanos de “45 por ‘45,” con una cobertura de copas de 45% para 2045. Esto duplicará aproximadamente la cantidad de sombra creada por nuestros árboles (medida en 22% en 2013). ¿Por qué? La calidad de vida que disfrutamos en Goshen se ve afectada positivamente por la presencia de árboles vivos. A medida que nuestros patrones climáticos continúan cambiando, los árboles serán cada vez más importantes para mantener a Goshen como un lugar cómodo para vivir.

La ciudad de Goshen tiene dos programas de árboles que ofrece a través del Departamento de Parques y Recreación de Goshen, para ayudar a los residentes a cuidar del “bosque urbano.”

Excavando dinosaurios Durante estas “excavaciones” los jóvenes paleontólogos experimentarán la maravilla de excavar fósiles, armarlos y aprender de los misterios de nuestro pasado viviente. La inscripción al programa incluye ¡esqueleto, martillo, cincel y hoja/afiche de datos. Cada excavación tiene diferentes objetivos, disfrutar de ambos programas con todos los materiales nuevos y aprender acerca de las similitudes y diferencias entre dos criaturas presentadas en cada sesión.

Danza creativa Esta es una clase para los niños que son 3 años de edad el 1 de agosto y hasta de 4 años. La clase se centrará en el movimiento de la danza creativa, incluyendo aprender a seguir el ritmo, la técnica de replicación y la improvisación.

Una clase para los estudiantes entre las edades 4 y 5 años de edad. Clase de baile consistirá en ejercicios de calentamiento, estiramiento y aprendizaje de la técnica para el jazz, ballet y danza moderna. Esta clase es para estudiantes edades 5–7. Clase combinará la técnica del ballet clásico y moderno. Su hijo aprenderá la alineación adecuada del cuerpo y desarrollará flexibilidad, coordinación y gracia. Las clases generarán el gozo de la danza, la apreciación estética, así como fortalecerán un respeto y disciplina bien equilibrado y saludable. El nivel de dificultad aumentará con Moderna para principiantes II y Moderna para intermedios.

Moderna/ballet (para niños con necesidades especiales) Esta clase contiene los mismos elementos que la Moderna/ballet. Campamento Día del Descubrimiento

El Campamento Día del Descubrimiento es un campamento de verano divertido y emocionante, para niños de 5 a 12 años de edad. Comienza el 3 de junio y prestará servicio hasta el 2 de agosto (o conforme al calendario escolar de Goshen Community Schools). El campamento abrirá a las 7 am y cerrará a las 5:30 pm, de lunes a viernes. Esta es una actividad de verano de tiempo completo, solo se le permite una semana de vacaciones a cada participante. Programas para niños, adultos y familias

Intento de buceo por primera vez ¿Alguna vez se ha preguntado cómo sería respirar bajo el agua? ¿O cómo sería ser un pez? Jiu Jitsu brasileño Esta sesión introductoria le dará a los participantes un entendimiento básico de la historia del Jiu Jitsu brasileño, su teoría y técnicas. Triatlón para Niños y Jóvenes Sábado, 13 de julio

Shanklin Park, 411 West Plymouth Avenue, Goshen Los niños pre-adolescentes nadarán 25 metros (un largo de la piscina de Shanklin), montarán 1.2 millas en bicicleta y correrán media milla. Los adolescentes de 13 a 18 años nadarán 75 metros (tres largos de la piscina de Shanklin), montarán 1.2 millas en bicicleta y correrán 3.1 millas (5K). Es un parque iluminado cerca de la esquina de las avenidas Chicago y Lincoln junto a Rogers Park. Estas instalaciones promueven los deportes de patinaje en línea, patinaje en ruedas y patinetas (por favor, no llevar bicicletas). The parks are open to the public from dawn until 11 pm or until the conclusion of a park-approved activity.

Leaving a vehicle within any park after the location has closed is prohibited, except in cases of emergency or with the consent of the GPRD. Disturbing, injuring, or removing wildlife and/or vegetation located in any park with out permission of GPRD is prohibited.

Pets may be brought into any park only if they are continuously supervised and on a leash, including promptly repairing any damages caused by the pet and properly disposing of any excrement left by the pet on park property.

Motorized vehicles are prohibited on all bike and pedestrian trails, except if a person with a disability operates the device.

Horses and racing are prohibited on all trails.

The speed limit in all parks is 15 miles per hour.

The following activities are prohibited in the Goshen parks: a. Swimming, wading or bathing in any waters. b. Camping, erecting or maintaining a tent or other shelter, structure, or other improvement. c. Building, using or maintaining a fire unless it is contained in a unit that purpose. d. Possession, consumption, sale or exchange of any alcoholic beverage or illegal drug. e. Discharge of a firearm, use of a weapon or detonation of an explosive. f. Vandalizing, removing or altering any sign. g. Solicitation, sale or promotion of any commercial product or commercial event. h. Bow fishing. i. Smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, e-cigs and electronic water pipes), vaporizers and vapor products.

The penalty for any of these offenses is a fine up to $500.

Resident and Non-Resident Fees Goshen City residents, through city property taxes, contribute substantially to support facilities and programs offered by the Goshen Parks & Recreation Department. Non-residents are commonly asked to pay an additional amount so they contribute equally with those city residents. We appreciate non-residents’ understanding in this situation regarding finances. A city resident is anyone who lives within the city limits of Goshen. Those with a five-digit address are considered non-city residents.

Registration Procedures/ procedimientos de registro Registration for recreation programs, activities and rentals will be taken only in person at the Park Office or designated location. Registration will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. In all cases, registration fees must be paid in advanced of the start of the program at the time of registration. Program dates, times, and locations listed in this program guide are subject to change. Please call the Park Department Office to confirm program information, 534-2901.

Refund Information It is our policy not to refund registration fees once a program begins, registration closes, or class capacity is met, whichever occurs first. Consideration will be given to refund requests with extreme circumstances, but is not guaranteed. Pavilion and facility rentals must be canceled at least 60 days prior to rental date, no exceptions.

Ball diamond, canoe, ski and snow tube rentals are not refundable; rain dates may be rescheduled dependent on availability.

Program Cancellations Programs will be offered unless the number enrolled falls below the minimum. Cancellations due to inclement weather will be posted on WNDU-TV, Channel 16. For information on programming cancellations, please call the Program Hotline at 534-3200.

Special Concerns The Goshen Parks & Recreation Department’s programs and facilities are available to all patrons regardless of race, national origin, gender or disability.

Wayne Wogoman Welcome Center The Wayne Wogoman Welcome Center is located at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East. Visit the center to view displays like the mammoth and mastodon bones found locally in Goshen and rotating displays representing Goshen’s history, compliments of the Goshen Historical Museum. The center offers trail maps and information on local points of interest like where to eat, shop and play. Unique photographs and postcards are available for purchase. The Wayne Wogoman Welcome Center is open Wednesday–Friday, 10 am–3:30 pm.

Also located on the property is a gazebo with exhibits marking its historical location along the Lincoln Highway route provided by the Lincoln Highway Association.
