A Letter from Showstopper's Founder I have loved dance all my life! I love everything about dance: the music, costumes, hard work, friendships, and the excitement of performing. Growing up in Michigan, dance was my life. I never wanted to do anything else. My first job was teaching dance at the Battle Creek Civic Recreation. At age 16, I started a program that gave underserved public schools a dance program. After two years of teaching, I ran a citywide talent show with a $500 cash prize that Kellogg’s Cereal donated. It was a huge success, and it was all I wanted to do from then on. It took 12 years from that point to start Showstopper. My dream has always been to teach others to discover their purpose and potential. When I look back at 42 years of Showstopper and now eight issues of Showstopper Magazine, I am so happy to see the endless love our community has for dance. As founder and creative director, I have taken some risks, but I have remained steadfast to bring to the dance world the very best ideas, creativity, and inspiration.

You may recognize Kitana Turnbull as Carmelita Spats from a Lemony Snicket classic, but the events of her life have been anything but unfortunate. Kitana has been in so many TV shows and movies, with roles in The Bachelors, Puppy Dog Pals, American Princess, The Rocketeer, Costume Quest, Adventures in Wonder Park, and more.
USI N G H E R VO I C E Despite all of her roles, though, you might not easily recognize her. Why? Because a lot of her roles were voice acting roles, something she’s been doing for years! “I love working on voice-
overs because it’s the most fun job!” Kitana told us. “It takes a long time but once you see the final animation, it’s amazing!”
Photography: Ana Ochoa • Writing/Design: Holly Childs • Actor: Kitana Turnbull • Wardrobe Stylist: Angel Roberts • Hair Stylist: Rachel Ross • Makeup Artist: Laura Schaffer
H E R P RO C ESS So what does a daily routine look like for a voice actor? “I get up, have lots of tea with honey, and I make sure my voice is in tip-top shape,” Kitana said. “You can’t overthink it. You just have to make sure you have a lot of energy and have fun with it. If you don’t have fun, it shows.”
G ET W H AT Y O U P U T I N As far as how that translates into her other roles, there’s one thing that she recommends for any artist—confidence. “Be confident in your own abilities,” she said. “You can’t let other people decide if you’re good enough.” Through it all, Kitana makes sure she stays positive. “There’s a lot of rejection in this industry,” she explained, “but you just have to push through it.
The energy you put out, you’ll get in return. Stay positive! If you have haters, take that and thrive off that. And when something positive does happen, remember to stay humble!”
F U N KY FAS H I O N Her positive energy doesn’t just help her in her acting roles, it also shows through in her fashion choices. She arrived at our photo shoot with a wardrobe full of funky pieces that were just asking to be photographed! “I like fun, off-the-wall rave stores, like Dolls Kill,” she said. “They’re so fun and different. I love to dress differently. I don’t want to wear what everyone else is wearing; that’s not fun!” With her bubbly personality and unique energy, we can’t wait to see (or hear!) what Kitana does next.

W
e sat down with Gavin Magnus—singer, dancer, gymnast, performer, and actor for an exclusive interview on the inspiration behind his music, his fashion obsession, and his advice on success.
> WHY DO YOU LoVE PERFORMING?
I just love entertaining an audience. I went on tour a few years ago, and it was such a great experience. It makes me feel so loved and confident when people come out to support me; it’s a really cool thing.
> WHAT IS THE BIGGEST INSPIRATION BEHIND YoUR MUSIC? Photography: Ana Ochoa • Writing/Design: Holly Childs • Actor: Gavin Magnus • Wardrobe Stylist: Angel Roberts • Hair Stylist: Rachel Ross
I’m a big fan of Justin Bieber, so I get a lot of my inspiration from him. Also when I think of music, I try to think about what other people want to hear, what other people can relate to and feel.
> WHAT HAS BEEN YoUR FAVORITE CAREER MEMORY SO FAR?
Probably recording at Capital Records. I have my own studio there. Also going on tour and releasing new music!
> WHAT DO YoU THINK ARE THE BIGGEST KEYS TO SUCCESS?
Hard work, dedication and finding what’s best for you. People are always worried about staying relevant and staying on top, but at the end of the day, it’s mostly about what you’re happy doing.
OPENED UP ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA BULLYING BEFORE. > YoU'VE ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER TEENS WHo ARE BEING BULLIED? My advice about bullying and social media is honestly to just ignore the hate. Your haters are your biggest supporters. I think you have to be in a really low head space to leave negative feedback on someone else’s posts. Personally I think you should show sympathy to your haters. I recently met with Gary V., and he really opened my eyes to hate and how to deal with it, so shout out to Gary V.
A SELF-PROCLAIMED SHOPAHOLIC. > YOU'RE WHAT ARE YoUR FAVORITE THINGS TO SHoP FOR? Clothes! Especially designer clothes. I love Gucci. I love sweatpants, t-shirts, and hoodies… and belts and shoes… just everything! Anything that I can wear.
> HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? > WHERE DO YoU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS?
Very outgoing. I'm very loud and confident in how I dress!
Performing at Madison Square Garden and selling out the Staples Center... Hopefully making it big!
> WHO IS YoUR BIGGEST SUPPORTER? My mom... Definitely my mom.

TAYLOR'S FAVORITE DANCE ROUTINE " I have so many favorite dance routines, but I think my favorite is mine and my partner's, Josh Beauchamp’s first routine we did on World Of Dance. Our choreographer, Carlo Atienza was absolutely amazing! It was to “bellyache” by Billie Eilish, the Marian Hill remix. I had to play the part of a criminal, and Josh was the interrogator. We had to choreograph using a chair and figure out how to incorporate it throughout our routine! It was so challenging, but so much fun."

L’ histo i r e Love history? Paris has plenty of it! Take a walking tour of the city and learn about NotreDame Cathedral (currently being restored after the 2019 fire). Or, see Paris from another point-ofview on a cruise down the river Seine. You can typically find cruises that depart during the day, but we recommend doing both a day cruise and a night cruise—so you can see things from a whole new light.

simply walking around Paris. The city has incredible architecture dating back 2,000 years (yes, you read that right). While the city itself is really a work of art, there are many art pieces you can’t miss within the city’s museums. From Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa in the Louvre to The Thinker by Auguste Rodin in the gardens of Rodin Museum, there are thousands of works of art to take in. While the Louvre is arguably the most popular museum of Paris, many prefer Musee D’orsay,
Co u t u r e & C u isi n e While most of us picture baguettes and macarons when it comes to the food in Paris, their cuisine has way more to offer. While they have every type of food you can imagine, we recommend starting the day with a pastry (like a croissant or eclair), having a bowl of French Onion soup for lunch (the most important meal of the day in France), and ending the evening with a delicious dinner (and a side of escargot!). When dining in Paris (or anywhere in Europe for that matter), it’s important to know that most European countries take a sieste in the mid-afternoon. It’s a common time for people to go home, take a nap, relax, and unwind from their day. While you don’t have to partake, most restaurants also close during
sieste, so it’s essential that you plan ahead to ensure you’re not starving somewhere at 3pm. The cuisine isn’t the only thing that is top-notch in Paris, the city is also well-known for its fashion, with Paris Fashion Week happening every year in September. If you can’t make it then, there’s still a ton of fashion at your fingertips! Take a jaunt down Champs-Élysées, one of the most famous shopping streets in the world. While this street has tons of luxury brands, like Chanel, Gucci, and Hermès, there’s a lot of reasonably-priced options, too, like Zara and H&M. If you’ve tackled Champs-Élysées and still want to shop, Paris has tons of malls, too. Head to Forum des Halles or make your way to Beaugrenelle where the rooftop has an incredible view of the Eiffel Tower! Busy shopping centers not your scene? Paris has flea markets and vintage shops, too. Many of the flea markets are seasonal, so just be sure to look them up before you go. Once you’re done taking in the scents and sights of the shopping streets, head to The Alchemist Atelier, where you can create your own scent in the form of a signature perfume!

What would Paris be without dance? And what would dance be without Paris? While ballet actually originated in Italy, its word stemming from the Italian word “ballare,” it gained popularity in the French courts, when Catherine de Medici, an Italian royal, married King Henry II in the 16th century. With its dense history in France, it’s no surprise that dance is prevalent in Paris. The Paris Opera Ballet is the official ballet company in Paris, and it can be traced back to 1661. While it was one of the first dance companies in Paris, it certainly isn’t the only one, and Paris now has a much more versatile offering. From ballet to break dancing, Paris just about has it all. If you’re a dancer heading to Paris, there’s something you can’t-can’t miss, the place where the Can-Can dance was founded, Moulin Rouge! Take a train from Montmartre down to Pigalle and gitchy-gitchy picture with the famous red windmill. It's absolutely lifechanging according to dancer Rhylee Hensler: "Moulin Rouge has changed my life. Working six nights a week on the beautiful

E x t r a M AG I C A L Haven’t had quite enough Paris yet? We don’t blame you! While the city itself is incredibly magical, there’s more magic to be had just outside the city at Disneyland Paris. It’s just twenty miles outside the city, making it a perfect day trip.
