Is it okay to have Katy Perry as a role model? Her latest number one single, “Part of Me,” is fine, fresh, fierce with not-toomasked references to her recent breakup with Russell Brand. Her words could apply to anyone who’s been in a dysfunctional relationship: “You chewed me up and spit me out, like I was poison in your mouth. You took my light, you drained me down.” But our girl Katy – and that’s why we love her – is a survivor, she fights back: “Now look at me I’m sparkling, a firework, a dancing flame, you won’t ever put me out again.” So take your cue from the toughest
California Gurl, pack your bags, walk away and start anew. After all, spring is here, and there’s no better time to enjoy all that life – and Lebanon – have to offer.

Eddie Redmayne | Citizens
Edible Eddie Text Laureen Parslow
Sexy British actor Eddie Redmayne is the new face of Burberry In My Week with Marilyn, British actor Eddie Redmayne holds his own next to Hollywood heavyweights Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh. Before landing his big role in My Week with Marilyn, Redmayne had supporting roles in contemporary American indie movies like Savage Grace, alongside Julianne Moore, and The Yellow Handkerchief with Kristen Stewart. He’s also starring in this year’s movie version of the Broadway musical Les Misérables. The young star is currently the face of Burberry Prorsum.
. You just turned 30, how do you feel?
1
Well to be honest I haven’t even had the time to think about it. The night of my birthday I was on stage playing Shakespeare’s Richard II. I haven’t properly celebrated my 30th. I’m waiting until everything settles down.
. You’ve played in a lot of historical movies, is it
2
because you’re British? Gossip No. 18
Actually, I’m more under the impression that I have a very bipolar career: either I’m in a movie that portrays a certain British era, or I am in US productions where I incarnate a young American drug addict. I’ll never get bored of telling a good story.
. What attracted you to the story of Colin Clark and
3
Marilyn Monroe? It’s because I’d never heard of it before, and I was instantly interested in Colin Clark’s character. Also, Michelle being cast in the movie persuaded me even more. She’s an actress I profoundly admire.
.
4 In an interview, Michelle Williams says that everybody has their own Marilyn Monroe memory. What’s yours? This might be a bit embarrassing, but I must admit that before filming the movie I knew her more for her looks than her work. During my research I watched her films, and it was a revelation to discover how fantastic an actress she really was.
.
5 One of your first roles, in Savage Grace, was extreme. How did your parents react? I took my then-girlfriend, her family and mine to see it at the London Film Festival and during the first few minutes I thought: “What am I trying to do here? Am I crazy?” Playing an incestuous son who’s making love to his mother on the big screen, in front of his own mother and his girlfriend. I had to do it, but I was very proud of the film.
. Has Hollywood always been your dream?
6
Honestly, not really. My dream is to be able to juggle between theater and film and to work with interesting people.
.
7 Tell us about your relationship with Burberry Prorsum. I’ve known Christopher Bailey for five or six years now. He’s a lover of art, and he came to watch me in a play recently. It’s a privilege for me to collaborate with him. I love wearing his clothes, and I love the fact that Burberry is fundamentally British.

What to do | Restaurant
Give me Gossïp Text Natasha Dirany Photo Raya Farhat
It’s finally here: a restaurant inspired by the publication you’re now holding in your hands It’s not every day you get to eat off the pages of a magazine. But that’s all part of the gloss and understated glamour at Gossïp, a new restaurantstyle-café. Located on the basement floor of ABC Mall in Dbayeh, the restaurant is drenched in style, with each table featuring visuals from Aïzone’s high-fashion ad campaigns. Models sprayed head-to-toe in op art-esque monochrome prints, shot by the illustrious Stefan Sagmeister, are the ultimate fashion tablecloth (and make gingham tablecloths look like a dusty heirloom). Set around designer Perspex chairs, marble flooring and deliciously deep beige leather sofas, Gossïp is set to put standard mallrat cafés in the dark.
10
It’s the most suitable backdrop for a serious menu. There’s a selection of sandwiches, quesadillas, pizza, pasta, burgers and fun-food items, all with a street food-meets-gourmet feel. Refuel your shopping vigor with a Black Angus sirloin burger (served with French fries and in a freshly baked bun), avoid that changing room bloat and opt for grilled salmon with greens or split a super fresh salad with warm caramelized goat cheese, walnuts and dried apricots. Desserts on the menu are freshly made (try the banana split, chocolatestuffed éclair or cutesy lemon meringue pie) and ideal for divulging your own private scandals at Gossïp’s bar-like counter.
There’s no need to use a bite as an excuse to miss out on another bout of shopping either. Open from 10am to 10pm, Gossïp’s edgy spirit makes for a fashion-forward pit stop that matches Aïzone’s own nearby store. Handily flanked by Burberry and Tony Burch clothing, Gossïp guys and girls can make a mental note of their next fashion extravagance, as well as pick up a few coveted items in Gossïp’s own store. Hardbacks by Taschen and Assouline line the bookshelves, and there are home accessories by Skitsch and Diptyque perfumes and candles. Gossïp restaurant is at ABC Mall in Dbayeh, tel. 04.417.217, ext. 104. Apr-May 2012

Jonny Briggs exposes himself to inspire humanity “I would be doing this whether people were interested in it or not,” says 27-year-old artist Jonny Briggs. This statement encapsulates the young man’s mindset – and consequent aesthetic. His drive to create does not come from commercialism, but from a conflict within. The Berkshire-born artist has always been interested in the internal conflict of the self versus the pre-ordained roles of social interaction. Briggs originally began to train as an architect, but he soon found himself drawn to art, and left the course to start an art foundation degree at the Chelsea College of Art. It was at this stage that he began to examine the relationships within his family, and he continued to do so throughout his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in fine art. In October 2011, Briggs won the Saatchi Gallery’s New Gossip No. 18
Sensations prize, and success soon followed. “It’s been really exciting, but it wasn’t expected. I feel like I have to explore these issues, and the fact that people are interested is a separate factor.” Briggs’ relationship with his family – his father, mother and sisters feature heavily in his work – is one of his main concepts, a concept that informs his shows across Europe this spring, including a major exhibit at Verona’s Fama Gallery. “I’m really interested in how children don’t have any idea of conforming. They cannot think within the box as they don’t even know that the box exists.” The artist’s “The Kiss” features a large wood carved sculpture of his father’s head, with a cast of Briggs’ own head, set in a big grin, on the inside. “I’m very interested in the whole idea of the dou-
ble. How we inherit things from our parents, but we are different – the domino effect of existence.” Another piece, “The Empathetic vs. The Mimic,” is a scene of doubles, two beds parallel each other along with over 200 identical objects that have been arranged to mirror each other symmetrically – Briggs and his partner both appear in the picture set in his aunt’s house. “It’s a rebellion of the childhood photograph. Yet it relates to family, highlighting how two things, two people, can be the same but very different. It goes back to my relationship with my father, we are similar yet we are not the same.” Jonny Briggs’ solo show “Familiar/Familial” is on view until May 19 at Fama Gallery, 25/57 Corso Cavour, Verona, Italy, T 39.04.5803.0985, W www.famagallery.it

Cosmic witch Text Lucy Gillespie
Sofia Ajram casts a spell with her whimsical photographs Dreamy gamine Sofia Ajram is the spirit behind Cosmic Witch, a feast of a blog featuring photography, accessories and fashion. Ajram’s shots are like modern tarot cards; a trio of girls casting spells in the forest, lovers in union in a hotel room lit like a fluorescent starburst or her own doe-like form, gracefully levitating above a bed in the moonlight. And with spreads in magazines such as Bullett and Vice, Ajram’s star is clearly on the rise. Claiming such varied inspirations as ‘70s horror and erotica, Norse mythology, nature, the cosmos, magic and alchemy, Montreal-based Ajram also mines her psyche for images that tell a story. “I started taking self-portraits when I was 13, as inspired by a beautiful German girl that used to do the same. I would take my most emotionally charged portraits of myself during times in my life in which I felt some extreme emotional imbalance.”
12
Ajram continues to feature often in her shots. “With professional models, there is sometimes a lack of connection between the subject and the mood I am trying to portray in a shot. If it’s a portrait that’s truly meaningful to me, I’ll use myself as a model. No one knows what you want creatively more than yourself.” Her process is part technique, part happy accident. “Having no one behind the camera creates an intuitive element of the random that I enjoy discovering once the shot is taken.” With her signature ethereal aesthetic catapulting her work to acclaim, she is beginning to enjoy collaborations with designers such as Grimes. It is easy to see why the fashion-conscious are drawn to Ajram, whose lithe frame and haunting face give an aura of renaissance romance, modern gothic and just a pinch of Japanese schoolgirl. Her fashion shots evoke Annie Liebovitz’ fairy tale series;
Ajram’s models seem “in character” rather than merely “dressed.” Still, fashion photography in Montreal presents fresh challenges. “It’s so cold and gray so often in Montreal that it’s difficult to create successful shoots. With my last shoot I was outside with the model for maybe 30 minutes – I didn’t even shoot a full roll of film because she was so cold. It’s completely understandable. It was minus 30 degrees Celsius outside!” For the time being, Ajram is the mistress of her realm, balancing a growing cult following with the pursuit of her undergraduate degree. “Studying can often be a source of inspiration, especially with different streams of film, literature and art constantly being discovered. I’m grateful to be able to continue my education.” Check out Sofia Ajram’s blog at www.cosmicwitch.com Apr-May 2012

Music | Cassette tapes
Really awesome Text Natasha Dirany
One blogger shares the weirdest and wildest cassette tapes from Africa Awesome Tapes from Africa is, without a doubt, buy-me-a-plane-ticket awesome. Brian Shimkovitz, a New York-based cassette junkie, started the blog to share the tapes he picked up on student trips and a Fulbright scholarship to Africa. His first find was some “mysterious and wonderful” music by Ata Kak in Cape Coast, Ghana. “I had no idea what it was, but I became obsessed with it. And so many people who read the blog have become big fans as well.” Drop by awesometapes.com today and you can freely download anything from Sufi music from
14
Burkina Faso to “glittery and glammed out Manding pop from Guinea.” Shimkovitz posts each song, and often the whole tape, along with its original killer kitsch cover and his own stoner-like commentary: “This tape gets the award for wily, sinewy and swirly lo-fi keyboard tone of the year.” Now a record label, Awesome Tapes from Africa released La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol 3, a 1983 tape by Malian singer Nâ Hawa Doumbia last year, on vinyl, CD, mp3 and, naturally, limited edition cassette. Shimkovitz left behind his nine-to-five job to devote himself fully to running
the label, trading his desk as a music publicist for DJ gigs across Europe and America. “I am so stoked to not be working in an office anymore,” says Shimkovitz, who DJs using the original cassette tapes, rather than CDs or mp3s, and likes playing to “open-minded crowds in bizarre warehouses in weird parts of town. It’s been a lot of fun to DJ with tapes…something about the rectangular shape of the cases and the design of the reels inside have always attracted me in an aesthetic sense.” Check out www.awesometapes.com Apr-May 2012
Charbel Bouez | Citizens
A man and his cam Text AG Joy
Charbel Bouez snaps intriguing shots of Lebanon’s remote regions Charbel Bouez’s first major exhibit of his photography is, appropriately, entitled “Audace” (English translation: daring, bold, audacious). Although the word accurately represents the breadth and depth of his photographs – of nature, the environment, landscapes and portraits – it’s also a true reflection of the man behind the shutter. The word came up when he was talking about his photos with a major sponsor of his exhibit. As Bouez recounts it, “He told me what I was doing was audacious.” It’s not necessarily the act of clicking away that renders his work daring. Rather, it’s the situations and locations he pursues before finding that perfect combination of subject, light, angle, inspiration: climbing mountains, hiking down steep valleys and exposing himself to the often unpredictable and harsh elements to get that perfect shot. And he manages to capture the intensity of his subjects, even in black and white. Gossip No. 18
As any amateur photographer knows, accurately depicting a subject in color photographs is generally less complicated. With black and white, the texture, tonal contrast, shape, form and lighting has to be just right. Although Bouez has been passionate about photography since he picked up his first camera in his early teens, it was his love of nature, of exploring his surroundings, that led the 28-year-old to begin taking photos. Initially, he wasn’t thinking of photography as anything more than a hobby. He already had (and still has) a full-time career working in corporate communications. In the beginning, when he would return from hiking in some unexplored corner of Lebanon, or from a trip to discover another country’s unchart-
ed regions, he regularly posted his photographs, or his “visual communication,” as he calls them, on his Facebook page. “I became more confident. I traveled a lot, took lots of photos and began to show more and more of them. The comments I got made me realize that my photos were good.” Bouez’s photos also served to show the Lebanese a part of the country they didn’t know existed. “Most people don’t know this country very well,” he says. “They were amazed by the shots I took and always asked whether they were of places in Lebanon.” One day, he even got a phone call from an ad agency. “They had seen some of my photos and asked for directions to one of the sites as they wanted to do a photo shoot there.” “Audace” is on view until April 9 at The Venue in the Beirut Souks.

24 Hours in Toronto Text Lucy Gillespie Photos Pascale Beroujon
Toronto has long been a well-kept secret for those in the know. One of the world’s most diverse cities, it is known for global cuisine, unparalleled entertainment and world-class nightlife. The annual Toronto International Film Festival inspires a game of celebrity-sighting bingo: catch Brangelina, George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston, Blake Lively and more at the following hotspots
7-8:30am
Breakfast at Studio Café Steep yourself in Toronto’s spunky charm at this sun-lit Four Seasons enclave, where bright glass sculptures and art-laden walls make for breakfast decoration. Feast your eyes on the open kitchen and culinary wizards whipping up fare like the super-healthy Ultimate Power Breakfast (protein power juice, bruléed bananas, Omega-3 minute eggs) or the super-indulgent Montreal smoked hash with chipotle Hollandaise. Four Seasons, 21 Avenue Rd., T 1.416.964.0411, W www.preview. fourseasons.com/toronto
9-11am
Helicopter ride over Niagara Falls The world’s most romantic site, where 750,000 gallons of water plunge off a 173-foot cliff, is a must-see for any trip to Toronto. Skip the 90-minute drive and throngs of tourists, and stay warm and dry in your very own chartered helicopter to whisk you across the panorama. Lovers be warned: the site has a history of tempting impromptu proposals. W www. niagarahelicopters.com
11am-1:30pm
Shopping in Bloor/Yorkville District Float back down to earth to meander the enchanting, tree-lined side streets of Toronto’s shopping mecca. Flower boxes burst from the windows of old world standards like Gucci, Chanel and Hermès, and a constellation of local exclusives like Holt Renfrew department store or Corbo Studio, which houses Sienna and Savannah Miller’s exclusive twenty8twelve collection.

Lunch at Pangaea Another celebrity haunt, Pangaea operates under the helm of head chef Martin Kouprie, who has an international reputation for seasonal dishes with show-stopping flavors. The spectacular cheeses are prepared in-house, the dreamy risotto is awardwinning, but it’s the eclectic panoply of small plates, representing Toronto’s multicultural history, that truly leave an impression. The holy trinity is made up of foie gras terrine, savory smoked trout and oysters in warm truffle cream sauce. 1221 Bay St., T 1.416.920.2323, W www.pangaearestaurant.com

Art Gallery of Ontario This imposing steel-and-glass structure, like an artfully hunchbacked skyscraper, is Toronto’s Pompidou. Designed by celebrated architect Daniel Libeskind, the gallery showcases a jagged exterior, breathtakingly airy ice-cavern hangars and the odd whimsically bedecked renaissance ceiling. Collections focus on the art of Ontario’s native peoples, as well as Chinese art and culture. 100 Queen’s Park, T 1.416.586.8000, W www.rom.on.ca
6-7:30pm
Ice Skating at Nathan Phillips Square Hockey is the Canadian national pastime, so when dusk falls, there’s no better spot to show your allegiance than Nathan Phillips Square. A fountain in summer, the square comes to life in the colder months, when visitors and locals alike work up their appetites. Admire a veritable timeline of Toronto’s architecture. 100 Queen St. West, W www.toronto.ca/city_hall_tour/nps.htm

Dinner at Sotto Sotto Toronto’s longtime darling restaurant is filled with light-catching glasses and chandeliers, heady inked paintings of ancient Roman landmarks and photos of celebrity patrons enjoying the trattoria fare. The minestrone is sumptuously nostalgic, the gnocchi pillowy and the pesca spada (swordfish) with fennel and orange is bright and brilliant. 116A Avenue Rd., T 1.416.962.0011, W www.sottosotto.ca
10:30-11:30pm
Comedy at The Second City Comedy breeds in cold climates: Mike Myers and Jim Carrey both earned their chops at this very cabaret. Grab a drink from the bar (mixers and microbrews are the language they speak), and get ready to laugh the chill away at Dreams Really Do Come True! (And Other Lies), the sketch standard with a rotating cast of seriously funny people. 51 Mercer St., W www.secondcity.com/performances/ toronto/calendarandtickets/
Midnight-3am Clubbing at Courthouse Oh the irony! This ornate glam-pleasure palace is, in fact, housed in a former court of law. After a day of walking, settle into a plush sofa before a roaring fire with a kir royal. Exposed brick, massive chandeliers and swathes of primary beams set the tone of Toronto’s standard classical whimsy. Below the balcony, the dance floor pulses to Top 40 mash ups and house music. Meet Iris Apfel, the world’s oldest fashion icon Iris Apfel is the world’s oldest fashion icon. In 2005, New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) conducted a retrospective of her incredible wardrobe. Today, documentarian Albert Maysles (of Grey Gardens fame) is devoting a film to her. And at the ripe old age of 90, she’s the face of a new makeup collection for MAC.
. Was the MAC makeup collection by Iris Apfel an

exciting project for you? Yes. I’d never done a makeup collaboration before. I find that MAC is a trendsetter, and the products are great for all generations. I’ve been

a fan of the red lipstick Lady Danger for some years now!
.
2 What’s your favorite product? I love lipstick. Lipstick is a must in my beauty routine. I always try to use bold and bright colors. The young woman at MAC told me that all the designers absolutely loved my colors.
. The red lipstick is your trademark, correct?
3
Exactly! My red lipstick and my eyeglasses.
. What’s the story behind your round oversized glasses?

I bought them many years ago at a flea market. I said to myself if I have to wear eye glasses, let them at least be real glasses, big ones.

I also just signed a contract with Eyebobs, an eyewear brand that’s beautiful and affordable at the same time. My husband and I use the same one, Yatagan de Caron. It’s a wonderful, very spicy fragrance that’s not very well-known.

7 You seem ageless. What are your beauty secrets? I don’t really have any. You just have to be natural. Coco Chanel used to say “Nothing makes you look older than trying to look younger.” You have to age gracefully. All this plastic surgery is ridiculous. Gossip No. 18

9 What is, in your opinion, the ultimate faux pas in beauty? Applying too much makeup and powder, especially when you’re old: it highlights the wrinkles. And also, too much green or blue eye shadow: if it’s not applied properly or if you have wrinkly eyelids, you will end up looking like a turtle.

Beirut | Nightlife
Your new Saturday night Text Natasha Dirany
Dare to change the typical Beirut night
Your Saturday night is in urgent need of a makeover. A regular night of bar-hopping between Hamra and Gemmayze, followed by an overhyped “underground” party, have become the nightlife equivalent of skinny jeans; a well-loved staple, but shouldn’t we be aiming for something a little more daring? There have been a few recent attempts to give those skinny-jean-Saturdays a bit of flair. Creative options such as Beirut’s first silent dinner party at Zico House (think The Artist but with hummus), zero-technology night at EM Chill (where music, cell phones and even electricity were banned for the evening) and the Gemmayze bar that controversially invited the public to dress up as “Sinkara or Milenga” for a domestic worker-themed night (the less said about that PR monstrosity, the better) are a step in a more risqué direction, but it’s time to take it even further.
Tetas and gangsters Do we really need to explain this? Tetas sit around all day drinking coffee, wearing gold jewelry and dodgy perfume. Gangsters sit around all day drinking coffee, wearing gold jewelry and dodgy aftershave. Both bosses of the neighborhood keep their cash underneath the mattress: it’s a match made in costume party heaven. Alternative themes include: Jagals and Angels, Phoenician Toga Party, Sluts and Service Drivers.
ABC Party A college classic in the United States, an ABC party has a strict dress code: to wear “Anything But Clothes.” While the young and wasted choose to parade around frat houses in cling film thongs, add a squeeze of Lebanese to the theme and stick together an on-trend metallic bikini, made entirely from Tarboush wrappers.
Fake rooftop party Not everyone has their own rooftop with a panoramic view and Iron Curtain guest list, you know. Time to paint your ceiling black, grab some glow-in-the-dark stars and crank up the A/C for some simulated sea breeze. For a real Beiruti rooftop experience, make sure your guests spend the entire evening Whatsapp’ing, only pausing for photo opportunities. Feeling doubly ambitious? Recreate B018’s famous retractable roof with some black sheets and wire coat-hangers.

Occupy Gemmayze First they took over Wall Street. Now they’re taking over the world. Join the 99 percent next Saturday by pitching your own tent, homemade banner and sense of social and economic inequality, right in the middle of Gouraud Street. What do we want? Healthcare and doudou shots! When do we want them? Now! ‘90s night The ‘90s resurgence is all the rage right now, but Kurt Cobain grunge on the catwalk somehow feels a little bit too cool. If in the ‘90s you were watching repeats of Boy Meets World (and crushing on Topanga’s hair) instead of in the Viper Room, then bring back the real ‘90s vibe this Saturday. Put on your best baggy tee and cycling shorts, serve up some Cheesestrings and SunnyD, and blast that Alanis Morissette MiniDisc on repeat.

Style | Ivanka
Rocking the rag trade Text Serena Makofsky
Get this: now you can buy clothes and accessories made of concrete Concrete, the material you associate with industrial-chic countertops and suburban sidewalks, has amazing properties. Just ask Katalin and Andras Ivanka, the founders of Ivanka Studio and Concrete Works. They’ve just released a line of accessories made from their proprietary lightweight concrete concoction. These aren’t mere readymades, but rather ready-to-wear, completely flexible and even stylish in a post-apocalyptic, film noir way. It was a roundabout route to concrete couture. Katalin and Andras went on holiday to Canada and wound up working with a landscape architect. They witnessed the surprising versatility of concrete and took to their garage in Hungary to experiment with lighter, brighter formulations. Beginning with kitchen units, the duo were soon evolving their design process to incorporate home decor. The mad scientists then turned their attention to fashion. They experimented with combining con-
crete with nontraditional materials. Enter the Genesis collection, which the designers describe as “…where real high performance concrete meets leather to create a sequence of clutch handbags.” To make it all the more surreal, Anna Szabo, an intern at Ivanka, designed a complementary line of concrete charms in the shape of various vital organs. The quest to create clothing that emulated concrete had many reporters, critics and fashionistas doing a double take. While Ivanka does not specify the unique ingredients of this “new textile,” it is soft and wearable, but looks like a masterfully modeled sculpture you might find in an art installation or a contemporary museum’s garden. The designers have penned a love letter to concrete, in which they hailed the material’s versatility that “will open the gates of creative expression and will ensure a multitude of collections in our future together.” Ivanka’s future in fashion looks rock solid.

Hard as nails Text Grace Banks
Nail art is spring’s coolest beauty trend First London’s premier “it” girl Alexa Chung, then stateside wild-child Rihanna and now Kate Bosworth. It’s official, nail art is having a bit of a moment. Starting on the super-cool streets of East London and rising into the ranks of an exhibition dedicated purely to nail design – this trend demands you to channel your inner creativity. The movement started a couple of years ago in 2010 when magazine stylist Sharmadean Reid was unsatisfied by the nail bars on offer in her neighborhood of Dalston. “They just weren’t any cool and creative designs on offer. I got pretty

frustrated, so I decided to just open my own nail salon.” A year later WAH nails opened its doors.
most popular prints are leopard and tribal, both essential trends for spring/summer 2012.
The salon is a manifestation of Sharmadean’s goal. The hip Dalston space is a haven where cool girls from the fashion industry flock to get manicures alongside grungy art students. As Missy Elliot would say, it’s ladies getting their nails did. WAH has brought back the creativity of nail art and mixed it up with a cool and undercut urban vibe as seen in ‘90s hip hop and R&B videos. Nails are adorned with everything from Prada-style banana patterns to Mondrian’s Composition II. The salon’s
If there’s a Ferrari of this scene, Sophy Robson is most definitely it. Robson has been creating designs for catwalk shows for five seasons of fashion week now. “Basic gray colors with neon patterns on top is going to be a spring/summer essential,” she says. It’s easy to see what’s given nail art its popularity. “There’s something really indulgent about it,” says Reid, “yet every woman can enjoy it, whether she’s a working girl or a student.” Apr-May 2012
Doughnuts | What to do
Year of the doughnut Text Serena Makofsky
Forget cupcakes. Doughnuts are all the rage this year A cold, wet, so-very-Seattle day. I’m wandering the stalls of Pike Place, the waterfront public market, when I see the guy. Or, really, the cart in front of the guy. He’s hawking doughnuts, but not those pristine circles you see at chains. These babies barely outsize a Ring Pop. And, like the guy dishing them out, they look hot. They were. I bit through the sweet fluffy nothingness and saw my Nana frying cream puffs in her orange-and-avocado kitchen. She shook the fried dough balls in a bag of powdered sugar and cinnamon before displaying them on her pokerthemed serving tray. Full house. Doughnuts stand as top contenders for the trendiest sweets of 2012. Can cops’ standby carbs kick cupcakes to the curb? James Beard thinks so. On his foodie blog, he shares, “These irresistible Gossip No. 18
fried treats have recently resurged in popularity: our in-depth study of the Serious Eats archives revealed that doughnut-dedicated content rose by roughly 80 percent between 2010 and 2011.”
What makes a doughnut a doughnut? Some points to consider:
This year’s doughnut is a world away from the fried treat of yesteryear, with a passport filled with stamps. There are kolaches, central European pastries with fruit filling; lokmas, Turkey’s fried dough balls in syrup (second cousins to gulab jamun, the Indian treat of milky dough in rosewater and sugar syrup); churros, Mexico’s thin bars of cinnamon-crusted dough; and malasadas, Portuguese sugar doughnuts. Europe also provides us with the kinkiest-sounding doughnut: smoutebollen, from Belgium (the translation, lard balls, is decidedly less sexy). And don’t forget France’s beignets, which have become New Orleans’ staple pastry.
-That dough must be fried. There are healthier, baked versions out there, but these are faux-nuts.
-It must consist of dough. Hence, the name.
-It must be sweet. Except when it isn’t. Fat, not sugar, is the vital ingredient when making doughnuts. At Chicago’s Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, chefs whip up a light pâte à choux pastry and stuff it with pumpkin and spice. And your doughnut needn’t be circular. Voodoo Doughnut, a pastry-shop-cum-wedding-chapel in Oregon, concocts its namesake doughnut in the shape of a person, piercing the heart with a pretzel stick. Revenge never tasted so sweet.

Music | Radwan Ghazi Moumneh
The shape of music Text Shirine Saad Photo tanya traboulsi
Beirut-born Radwan Ghazi Moumneh has been instrumental in shaping Montreal’s indie music scene When Radwan Ghazi Moumneh was sent to an all-boy’s boarding school in the tony Westmount neighborhood of Montreal at age 15, he was out of place. The young Lebanese student wasn’t familiar with peanut butter and other local specialties, and he listened to obscure punk bands with skulls on their tape covers while others played hockey. Eventually he met other outcasts and started playing covers of songs by The Misfits, a New Jersey punk band, and Sonic Youth, a New York noise band. “At the school talent show,” he says, “my band’s loud, messy show was censored.” This marked the beginning of a long, rebellious road for the young guitar player. “I loved breaking expectations,” says the softspoken, lithe 34-year-old, who was born in Zokak el Blatt in Beirut and grew up in Oman during the Lebanese Civil War.
54
Later, after attending recording school, Moumneh had to take several random jobs – including one as a bike courier. He became acquainted with young indie bands. Montreal’s affordable rents and large lofts were attracting talent from around Canada and the United States, who got together to experiment with new sounds, migrating organically toward the working class neighborhood of Mile-End. Rising bands included mythical experimental band Godspeed You! Black Emperor and post-punk band Silver Mount Zion. One day, during a friend’s gig, Moumneh met the owner of a studio and started producing records. Moumneh eventually opened his own Montreal recording studio, Hotel to Tango, with three partners – two of whom were members of Godspeed and the other of Arcade Fire. There
he has produced records, among others, for French pop band Pas Chic Chic, French singer-songwriter Yann Perreau, Parisian romantic pop band Altr and garage/electronic band We Are Wolves. A lover of traditional Arabic music, Moumneh also has his own project, Jerusalem in My Heart, in which he experiments with Middle Eastern music and culture. He plays the buzuk, sometimes sings old Sufi songs, shows experimental 16-millimeter films and works with other musicians to raise awareness of Arabic culture. “It’s a mash of things,” he says. “It’s about my ideas on how I see my place as an Arab living in North America, being in a scene where there are virtually no Arabs.” It seems that the young punk has remained romantic at heart. Jack White Blunderbuss When The White Stripes officially disbanded last year, the ex-front man immediately immersed himself in a series of projects, including work with The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs and Wanda Jackson, but audiences were hungry for more. They’ve followed his knockout performances on Saturday Night Live, which featured the surprisingly mellow, soulful lead single “Love Interruption” (with Ruby Amanfu sharing vocals) and the badass “Sixteen Saltines,” effectively stealing the show from guest host Lindsay Lohan. The rest of Blunderbuss is a jewel, shifting from bluesy vocals to hard rocking numbers, underscoring White’s claim that the music is “my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas.” PLAYLIST The Shins Port of Morrow Fans have been waiting since 2007 for another release by this Portland band, but the follow-up only has one remaining musician from the original lineup, singer-songwriter James Mercer. While the polished pop sound of the lead single “Simple Song” may surprise some fans, the music has the same flashes of sweetness that made the first incarnation of the band famous.
Katy Perry Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection In an MTV interview, Katy Perry explained the reason for releasing the deluxe version of Teenage Dream: “I’m doing it mostly for the hardcore fans, because they always love all the extras.” KatyCats score the 12 original tracks, three new songs and alternative versions of “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F),” “E.T.” and “The One That Got Away.”
Melanie Dagher, 22, is making a foray

Mikhael. She shares some of her favorite tracks with Gossip. “Open” by Rhye
The Dandy Warhols This Machine Recorded at the band’s rock complex The Odditorium, the band’s ninth studio album is its grungiest, according to singer and guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor. He describes the standout single “The Autumn Carnival” as “outdoorsy Goth.” Folksy and groovy, the music harkens back to the days of vinyl, so it’s appropriate you can get this release in an LP format.
“Forever Young” by Joakim “Dead and Gone” by The Black Keys “Paradisco” by Charlotte Gainsbourg “Happy Up Here” (Boys Noize Remix) by Röyksopp “On’n’on” by Justice “Love Interruption” by Jack White “Quicker” (Shook Remix) by I Blame Coco
Madonna MDNA The hype over this album has been building since the Queen of Pop released “Give Me All Your Luvin’” in February. The music references classic dance floor Madonna, but with an electronica vibe. Nicki Minaj shows up, as does M.I.A. The question is, are catchy tunes heavy on the synthesizers enough to grab Madonna another Grammy?
“Feel So Good” by Mase “The Party” by Singtank “Battez-Vous” by Brigitte “We’ll Meet Again” (featuring Marian Gasolina) by Mickey Moonlight “Il Est Cinq Heures, Paris s’Eveille” by Jacques Dutronc “Above Your Head” by Anoorak
Adam Lambert Trespassing The rousing title track of Glambert’s new album is apropos for the singer who has “Another One Bites the Dust” as his ringtone. This sophomore release does not disappoint, with the near-soprano notes of “Better Than I Know Myself ” and the electro-dance hit “Cuckoo.” The ballad “Outlaws of Love” is rumored to be his “coming out” song.

Citizens | Elizabeth Olsen
The other sister Text Jean-Pascal Grosso
Young actress Elizabeth Olsen refuses to ride the coattails of her famous twin sisters In Martha Macy May Marlene, Elizabeth Olsen plays a young, depressed girl trying desperately to rebuild her life after escaping from a cult. As the younger sister of über-famous twins, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, 23-year-old Elizabeth is determined to establish a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s next big names. Gossip met up with the captivating actress at the Cannes Film Festival, where she divulged details about life, family and acting. Anxiety “When you find yourself, for the first time, carrying an entire feature film on your shoulders you start questioning yourself. Was I really a good choice for interpreting Martha? I asked this of Sean Dirkin, the director, a handful of times. The funny thing is that I didn’t really have the time to be nervous. I was shooting Silent House in New York and then Martha Marcy May Marlene directly followed. The two films overlapped. All they asked of me was to be ready on the first day of shooting. I wanted so badly to make this film, so I dived right in!” The movie “When my character Martha first joins the cult, she feels elated. For the first time ever she has confidence and feels she’s found a purpose in life and a place where she belongs. There is this paradox in the film – once she’s liberated from the
56
cult she begins to go insane and isolate herself form the world.”
and want to enjoy things I should be enjoying at my age.”
Inspiration “Initially, I regretted not having had more time to prepare for the role. I put a lot of me into this character. The movie was inspired by the experience of a young woman the director knew. He even asked me to meet her but I refused. I’m always wary of personal implications when preparing for a film.”
Life “I’ve never been a crazy party girl. I must’ve been like 17 the last time I had a huge blowout! I like cooking and traveling. I often travel spontaneously. I just pack my bags and leave in a hurry. I also love music. I think, musically, we are living in a great era.”
Nudity “It’s difficult to appear nude in one of your first films. I don’t want the public to expect to see me undress in everything I intend to do next! At the same time, Martha’s character is so disoriented that she’s not even aware of people looking at her. She has no real concept of what she’s doing. My job is to make my character as credible as possible, and I think Martha’s nudity in the film is crucial to better understand her disorientation and the innocence that was stolen from her.” Maturity “Most people are shocked that I was born in 1989. I have a pretty chubby face. When I was younger, I had the impression that I was taken a bit too seriously because of my determination to become a comedian. I worked hard and spent my time in class rehearsing. I am now more relaxed
Family “Thankfully, being the younger sister to the Olsen twins hasn’t affected me. Even during college, everyone knew that I was just as determined as the next student and never wanted to step on anyone’s toes to get ahead.” Hollywood “I know the world of Hollywood is tough and that overnight you can be in the spotlight and then disappear. I want longevity in this business. Actresses with more experience have told me what I should be weary of. It’s all about making smart choices. I still want to be acting when I am 60 years old.” Future “I just finished Red Lights with Robert De Niro, Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy. I couldn’t say no to a project like this one!” Apr-May 2012

on the big screen
Dark Shadows What do you get when you cross a cult-favorite TV series, a 200-year-old Johnny Depp and quirky director Tim Burton? A campy, gothic fantasy soap opera of a film, of course. Starring with Depp, as man-turned-vamp Barnabas Collins, are A-listers Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green and Jonny Lee Miller. The plot unfolds as Barnabas, a wealthy playboy in the mid 18th century, breaks the heart of a witch (Green) who subsequently turns him into one of the undead and buries him alive. Fast-forward to 1972, when Barnabas returns to his oncegrand mansion, now in disarray, and encounters a cavalcade of dysfunctional descendants. A horror film to sink your teeth into.

Hysteria
Whit Stillman, how we’ve missed you. The writer/director of cult favorites Metropolitan, Barcelona and The Last Days of Disco is back – as is his distinctive “whit.” Here, a group of female friends attending a guy-centric, grungy East Coast college attempt to shake things up by brightening the depressing atmosphere with musical dance and doughnuts. Greta Gerwig plays ringleader Violet in this dramedy.
It’s made up of a series of short comedy segments, shot by more than 10 directors and a ginormous A-list cast, including: Kate Winslet, Emma Stone, Uma Thurman, Hugh Jackman and more. Tying the shorts together is a search for the most subversive/banned movie ever made – Movie 43. The hunters are two teenage stoners and an egghead 11-year-old who discover tons of great films along the way.
Like most toddlers, Oscar is playful and utterly adorable. His playground? The gorgeous Ugandan rainforest. All is going swimmingly – with a doting mother and loving family – until an unfriendly band of chimps enter Oscar’s territory, leaving him orphaned. Luckily for Oscar (and viewers of this documentary), the camera catches the rest of the story, as an unexpected ally takes Oscar under his wing.
The setting: Victorian England. The problem: hysteria in women. The cure: orgasm. Yes, this film is about the invention of the vibrator. And it’s a romantic comedy. Hugh Dancy plays Dr. Morgan Granville, the man who tackles the 19th-century phenomenon of hysteria, thought to be the result of sexual dysfunction. His work birthed the first dildo known to man. Maggie Gyllenhaal is the doc’s love interest.

All about Allie
Text Kristin Julie Viola Photo sierra prescott Styling Karen raphael
Allie Gonino from The Lying Game talks about her life as a budding TV star Allie Gonino is a true triple threat who can sing, dance and act. She was a member of the pop group The Stunners, before moving to the small screen to appear on shows like Lie To Me and 10 Things I Hate About You. The 21-year-old can now be seen on the hit TV show The Lying Game. Gossip chatted with her about touring with Justin Bieber, landing her current gig and more.
. What made you want to make the switch from
1
singing to acting? There was no “switch” really. Even though I’d been professionally pursuing music before acting, I was always a performer and always knew I wanted to be an actress from an early age. If you ask my parents, they’d say I’ve been an actress my whole life. I was very dramatic as a child.
. What was it like touring with Justin Bieber when
2
you were a part of The Stunners?
58
The Bieber tour was pretty unbelievable. Before, during and even now, I still can’t comprehend the gravity of that whole experience. I mean, we played 20 sold-out shows to about 12,000 to 23,000 people! We had such a great time. It was like being at summer camp, only you’re with four of your close girlfriends, and you live on a bus that travels all over the United States. And, of course, at summer camp there aren’t thousands of fans wanting to take pictures with you. Justin’s fans are really great, so supportive of him, and surprisingly really supportive of us. You’d think they’d see us as competition, but they were just thankful for a fun show, which is all we wanted to provide anyway! 3
. How did you land the role of Laurel on The
Lying Game? I’d been working a lot with The Stunners, writing and recording songs to pitch to radio for a
second single. Somehow I managed to also go to my auditions, and I think it was early November 2010 when I got a call from my agent to read for Laurel. I actually didn’t even read the script before going into my first audition, after which they called me back to test for the show. I had two tests, one for the studio and the last for the network. I felt really connected to Laurel the minute I read the sides. I reverted back to my 16-year-old self and somehow convinced everyone that I was right for the part.
.
4 What do you like to do for fun? I really enjoy going to dance. I’ve been a dancer since I was seven, so I still go to ballet classes when I can. I’ve also started to take West African dance classes, which are so much fun! I also love yoga, jogging around the lake or hiking. I try to see movies when I can and love hanging out with my friends. Reading is always a good time. Apr-May 2012
