There will be no prouder father at this year’s Great North Run than Ingleby Barwick businessman Derek Rye. Derek, 56, is making an athletic comeback at the world’s biggest half-marathon on September 11 a full decade after last running any kind of race. While Derek has previously taken part in the Great North Run and the London and Nottingham marathons, it will be a big race debut for his three sons. Brothers Craig, 32, Nik, 28, and 21-year-old Adam will join their dad on the starting line as they bid to raise funds for charitable movement, Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation.

I have always loved writing, but didn’t really have much time to spare in my adult life, bringing up my three sons and daughter. I worked in housing management for twenty-one years and my colleagues and I used to say that we could write a book about life working on a housing estate. I have taken some of our experiences at work and played around with them to make a back-ground for my story The Egg Timer. The main character, Rachel is thirty-nine years old and feels that her chances of having a baby, are slipping away. Three other prominent women in the story feature, each with their own problems related to modern day living. Published by 6th Element, the book has received really positive reviews up to now. I have been asked by some readers if there is going to be a sequel to The Egg Timer, as there is a possibility for one. Although it is complete as it stands, this is something I might review when I have completed my current novel. The support for The Egg Timer has been amazing and I would like to thank family, friends and colleagues. The launch took place at the Myton Farm Pub on 16th July and was an outstanding success. Being a resident of Ingleby Barwick for thirty years I wanted it here, and I also attended the Ingleby Barwick Fun Weekend to promote and sell the book, and was really impressed by the community spirit. Hypnotherapy is one approach I use when working with clients and I’m passionate about it because it is a lovely gentle therapy which empowers people to find their own answers. In order to achieve a harmonious balance in their lives I also advise clients how mindfulness and positive thinking can help create a healthy mind. Something as simple as taking a few moments a day, practising self- care and recognising little ways to incorporate positive language and thinking could actually be the first stepping stone to a whole new mindset. Hypnotherapy is also ideal for children as they have brilliant imaginations. There is nothing magical about hypnotherapy and it bears no resemblance to stage hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is about getting someone into a relaxed state (like the period before we fall asleep, or when we go into a daydream mode) and using their subconscious mind to gain control of their thoughts. Alongside hypnotherapy I also run mindfulness sessions in schools. I incorporate the practice of mindfulness, along with visualisations, positive thinking, breathing techniques and affirmations. The sessions are focussed on empowering children so that they recognise that they are in control of their thoughts, emotions and behaviour. After celebrating year-on-year growth in that time, the firm – which provides marketing and PR services to a range of businesses – has announced its appointment of account executive Rachel Sharpe and has also re-located its offices to the newly-refurbished Gloucester House, on Church Road in Stockton.

House of Tides is a 60 cover restaurant which is set over two floors. The rustic ground floor entrance level with its original 16th century flagstones, provides an excellent venue for a premeal drink. The first floor which houses the main restaurant seating area has exposed beams and big open fire place. Kenny and Abbie’s vision for House of Tides was to create a casual and informal space where everybody should feel comfortable and relaxed with no compromise on quality. Kenny’s palate for seasonality and sourcing the best quality ingredients available from our North East and UK larder is translated through his classically trained, yet modern day inspired dishes.
The restaurant was awarded a Michelin star and 3 AA Rosettes in 2015 followed by numerous prestigious awards including A UK Restaurant of the year 2015-2016, The Cateys best Newcomer 2015 and North East Restaurant of the year 2014 & 2015. Kenny has also become a well known face on TV from his appearance on the BBC 2’s The Great British Menu. He won this in two consecutive years, 2009 and 2010.

Lamb, Sprouting Broccoli, Onions, Kohlrabi Serves 4 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010, Tuscany, Italy.
Ingredients Lamb Rump 1 lamb Rump (Trimmed), Vegetable oil (to seal), 1 sprig rosemary, 3 cloves garlic, butter (knob of), lemon (spritz of) Braised shoulder 400g lamb shoulder, 1 tsbl vegetable oil, ¼ bunch thyme, ½ bulb garlic (split) 2 fresh bay leaves, 1 tsp black peppercorns, 1 carrot, leek, onion, (peeled, roughly chopped) 1 stick celery (roughly chopped) 50g tomato puree, 200ml white wine, 500ml dark chicken stock. To finish the shoulder 20g onion, 20g kohlrabi (both peeled and diced), 20g celery (diced), butter (knob of), 200g braised shoulder (flaked down), 5g mint leaves (chopped). Lamb sauce 300g lamb belly (cut into 1cm dice), 1 tbsp vegetable oil, 80g each carrot, celery, onion (cut into 1cm dice) 3 cloves garlic,, 1 bay leaf , 2g white peppercorns, 2 plum tomatoes (chopped) 1 tsp tomato puree, 300ml white wine, 500ml lamb braising stock (reserved from shoulder) Broccoli Puree 1 Head Broccoli, salt and ground white pepper. Sprouting broccoli 12 pears sprouting broccoli (trimmed) Lemon oil (drizzle of), salt and pepper (to season) Marinated Kohlrabi Discs 100ml water 100ml chardonnay or white wine vinegar 100g caster sugar, 6 sprigs thyme, 1 kohlrabi (sliced into discs) Garnish Grelot onions, Sheep’s sorrel
Method
For the lamb rump Preheat the oven 180 °C Season the lamb and pan roast in very hot oil on all sides. Add the rosemary and garlic and roast in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and finish by blasting with a little butter and lemon juice. Rest for 8 minutes in a warm area. For the Braised Shoulder (prepare in advance) Preheat the oven to 150°C Brown the shoulder in a hot pan with the oil then place into a deep pot. Add the vegetables, herbs and peppercorns to the same pan and colour until golden. Add the tomato puree and cook out. Transfer the to the pot. Pour the wine into a pan, deglaze and reduce by half. Pour over the lamb , add the stock and bring to the boil. Cover and braise in the oven for 4-5 hours. Once cooked, leave to cool in the stock. Remove the lamb and pass the stock through a fine chinois and muslin cloth. Reserve for the lamb sauce. To finish the shoulder Sweat the onions, celery and kohlrabi in the butter until soft. Add the shoulder and mix in, adding a little braising liquor to help bind the shoulder. Finish by stirring in mint leaves. For the Lamb sauce Caramelize the diced lamb in the oil. Add the vegetables to soften, then add the herbs and spices. Stir in the tomatoes and the puree. Deglaze the pan with the wine and reduce to a glaze. Add the reserved stock and simmer for one hour. Pass through a double muslin cloth. Skim any residue or fat on the surface and reduce to a sauce consistency For the Broccoli Puree Cook the broccoli florets in a salted, boiling water. Drain and blitz to a smooth puree adding a little cooking liquid if required. Season. For the Sprouting broccoli Blanch in salted, boiling water for 20 seconds then refresh in iced water. Cut in half and char on top of the stove. Toss in lemon oil and season. For the Marinated Kohlrabi Discs Bring all of the ingredients except for the kohlrabi, up to a simmer. Add the kohlrabi and bring back up to a simmer. Pour into a deep container and leave to marinate for 1 hour. For the grelot onions Wash and peel the grelot onions. Cut in half lengthways and pan fry in oil until golden. To serve Serve as pictured.

Brockley Hall Saltburn-by-the-Sea We acquired Brockley hall in January 2015 initially with the intention of opening it as a care home. However, quite a few people mentioned to us that there were already too many care homes in town and a hotel was in greater need. Subsequently we decided to survey Saltburn’s opinion through Facebook. The response was unanimous, everybody favoured a boutique hotel. So our journey renovating Brockley Hall into our boutique hotel with a restaurant. Since we started the renovation my motto has been ‘Anybody can do the ordinary, we would like to do the extraordinary. Boutique and unique, individual and stylish. People have asked me where I get my ideas and inspiration from, my answer to that is the
many place I have travelled in my lifetime, examples being Raffles in Singapore, where I celebrated my 50’s Birthday with great friends and food, the moulin rouge where I’ve spent a romantic weekend with my husband, the Orient express and believe or not even burlesque dancing for some crazy reason, along with many other exciting places. When you come to visit us at Brockley hall I know you will see this inspiration shine through.

We have had many setbacks during the renovation. Needing a new roof, new electrics and new plumbing. We have spent many nights sourcing materials from all over the world. We have worked with many excellent local tradesman on our journey and the biggest thank you to Team Brockley: Mike, Jade, Rob and Baz.

I’ve designed and made dementia cushions, and had many craft stalls and table tops over the years. I’ve made my own clothes, helped in the wardrobe department for amateur dramatic societies, in 2014 I made the costumes for the WW1 remembrance football match that took place on Saltburn beach and last year I helped make costumes for a Bollywood show at the quarry theatre in Leeds. I’ve known heather for over twenty years and she approached me to see if I could make cushions out of fur coats for Brockley Hall Hotel. And the challenge was accepted and these are some of the results! The lampshades we saw when we were away on holiday in Krakow and Heather asked me if I could make some for the hotel! I’ve really enjoyed being a part of such a huge and exciting project in Saltburn, I’ve lived here all my life and the amount of people who come up to me and say “They must be your cushions in Brockley Hall?” it makes me feel very proud and honoured to have my ideas and designs on display in such a magnificent place!

THE VOLVO V40
The V40 is Volvo’s 5-door premium hatchback in the C-segment. It went into production in 2012 and has been one of Volvo’s best-selling models ever since. In 2016 the V40 received a major refresh, receiving the new face of Volvo with a distinctive concave grille, containing the new Volvo logo, and the “Thor’s Hammer” headlights first seen on the new XC90. In addition to the exterior design updates a range of new interior and exterior colour and trim options were added.

As with all Volvo’s, the powertrain is based on Drive-E 2.0 litre turbo and super-charged engines designed and built at Volvo’s engine factory in Skövde.
The V40 offers a full range of connectivity options in its Sensus user interface, including Volvo On Call, a phone-based app that allows you to control certain features in your car, (such as preheating, locking and unlocking, navigation, vehicle location services and other features). Volvo On Call now works with wearable’s such as Apple Watch and Android Wear and also has Windows 10 compatibility, meaning that Volvo On Call can now be operated from your PC as well as your smartphone.
The V40 comes with one of the most comprehensive standard safety offers available in the segment, including City Safety, which offers a range of collision avoidance and mitigation functionalities including pedestrian and cyclist detection.
The Drive-E range of low emission, high performance, petrol and diesel powertrains offer a perfect blend of driver enjoyment and fuel economy, whilst retaining a responsive feel for city driving.

Mini realigned its Clubman model last year, taking it out of the small estate car niche and placing it in the lower-medium hatchback sector, targeting people who choose the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Audi A3 Sportback, Volkswagen Golf and BMW 1 Series.

It launched with Cooper and Cooper S petrol models and a 150hp Cooper D. You can also now choose a Clubman One D which is the model that takes CO2 emissions below 100g/km.
The all-wheel drive system is new for the Clubman and different from that offered in the Countryman, optimised for the more sporty characteristics of the car compared to the semi-crossover Countryman.
Around 50% of Mini customers select the optional Chili pack, which includes part-leather upholstery with heated sports seats, parking distance control, automatic air conditioning, LED headlights and LED fog
Adding All4 gives the Clubman range an equivalent specification to other premium hatchbacks, many of which have a fourwheel drive option on highend models, as well as the benefit of improved traction and stability on poor road surfaces.
The 190hp 2.0-litre engine certainly ensures the Clubman has plenty of pace, with a 0-62mph acceleration time of 7.2 seconds, delivered smoothly by the auto transmission and without the wheel-spinning antics that might afflict a two-wheel drive car with that performance.
The Clubman range now has the appeal to reach more userchoosers than ever, seeing off more derivatives of equivalent cars at rival premium brands, but we rather want to try the One D to see what the entry-level model means for a company car driver.
