2019 will be a real mix of styles
Mary Martin International fashion designer Mary Martin shares her 2019 fashion predictions with Gossip readers There’s no doubt 2018 was a year of romance, fairytales, royal weddings and inclusion. For the eight months leading up to Harry and Meghan’s ceremony in May, I was combining and contrasting light joyful pastel fabrics with
FASHION PREDICTIONS FOR 2019 bold and antagonist fabric and design. The result was my Article 10: The Royal Collection which was intended to demonstrate traditionally perceived opposites have symmetry and sublime symbiosis. After the delight of the wedding, the reality of Brexit took over as the universal theme and it is one that many designers are now using as their inspiration. Designers are even more determined to showcase
Britain at its best and make our island a destination of choice for global buyers and those who will travel to wear the best. I am anticipating a revival of the swinging sixties. Remember Twiggy and her short skirts and page boy haircuts? Expect the equivalent boldness in 2019, which will be the year of powerful and bold looks. There won’t be one uniform style. 2019 will be a real mix of styles. Bold patterns, flamboyant styling, rustic
chic and minimalist fine tailoring. Punk and antiestablishment logos and political discourse will make a comeback. The recycling theme will accelerate and become mainstream, more fabric derived from plastic will be used and colours will be plant extracted and less chemical enhanced. 2019 is going to be fresh, tough, bright. I am a radio presenter, voiceover artist and event host, I’m up and working long before many people have made their first brew of the day and I admit that at this time of year when it’s cold, dark and the car windscreen needs scraping, that’s no easy task. But once I go live across Redcar and Cleveland on 105FM and online across the world with my agship breakfast show at Zetland FM, thoughts of a bleary early start have long gone. It’s years since I did my first show at hospital radio, yet it had had never been a childhood ambition. I was much more interested in acting, playing characters and doing silly voices, but I just wasn’t very comfortable with people watching me do it. So, when a fellow student suggested radio, where you can hide away in a small room with a microphone and take your listener on a journey of imagination, it seemed ideal.
I get to shine a light on the truly amazing people who make up our area I have studied radio, taught radio and feel that it is radio that really makes me tick. I know that my show can really make a difference to the local community because I get to shine a light on the truly inspiring people who make up our area, rather than focus on the doom and gloom of life.
In the last few months I have been so grateful to receive several awards. I won a Redcar and Cleveland Inspiring Women Award, Best Female Presenter at the national Community Radio Awards, shortlisted in the Best Local Radio Show in the ARIAs (the radio equivalent of the Oscars) and shortlisted in the inaugural Tees Valley Businesswomen.
The eagle-eyed may have even spotted me presenting my show in BBC2’s highly acclaimed documentary series “The Mighty Redcar”. It’s been an absolutely whirlwind of a 2018, who knows where 2019 will take me!

Local businesses bring a new lease of life to Bedford Street Bedford Street is being transformed into a business haven. A partnership between Jomast and Middlesbrough Council has resulted in the regeneration of the Bedford Street and Albert Road area. Investment has resulted in a surge of new independent businesses, micropubs and restaurants. Albert Road runs from Middlesbrough railway station to Centre Square and Teesside University. Mackenzie Thorpe was born in Middlesbrough in 1956 and studied at the Cleveland College of Art and Design. Mackenzie’s work is inspired by his childhood growing up in Middlesbrough, his artwork exudes nostalgia and local pride. Mackenzie has achieved worldwide success and critical acclaim. Mackenzie’s work has been featured in art galleries all over the world, he also opened his own gallery in Richmond in 1989 called Arthaus, it is a flourishing gallery that hosts a tremendous variety of artwork. Mackenzie has been chosen as the official artist for the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire. Bicycles are a prominent feature in Mackenzie’s work and are very popular with cycling enthusiasts, a perfect match for the Tour de Yorkshire! This collaboration proudly combines art and sport in a celebration of Yorkshire.

HORIZONS CENTRE State-of-the-art National Horizons Centre set for Spring opening
Aligned to the needs of industry, the centre will deliver industry-informed programmes to address the growth challenges faced by the bioscience sector aiming to lead to new medical advances. The centre will concentrate on developing technical skills, innovative management skills and knowledge needed for the biomedical sector to continue to flourish.
The centre has been financially supported by the Local Growth Fund, via the Tees Valley Combined Authority, and the European Regional Development Fund. The Local Growth Fund contribution of £17.5m represents the single biggest investment by the fund in the Tees Valley. The minister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth, Jake Berry described it as a facility which will, “train our young people to become the scientists of the future and continue to drive forward the Tees Valley as a leader in research, science and innovation in the UK and the world.”
Oopsie Daisys:
Vacant Loftus unit transformed into soft play centre A new children’s soft play centre and café has opened in a vacant unit in Loftus. Business owner Kelly Jones was able to open the soft play centre after being awarded funding from Redcar and Cleveland Council’s £2 million High Street Support Scheme. The scheme provides grant funding to improve shop or business units in Eston, Loftus, Guisborough, Saltburn and Redcar town centres. Before Kelly could open Oopsie Daisy’s, the unit needed a complete refurbishment. The building, which had been empty for two years, required a complete overhaul including new electrics and plumbing, damp treatment, a new staircase, new flooring and the installation of a disabled toilet. Kelly, who also runs an Oopsie Daisy’s in Skelton, now employs 12 local people and has hopes to turn her successful business into a franchise in the future.
A new facility which is set to place Tees Valley at the heart of the emerging bioscience sector will open its doors in the spring. Charity Partnership 2019 Announcement
They also organised a halloween themed dress down/dress up day along with some trick or treat games. Stacy ended up being dunked in a concoction of tomato soup, meatballs and spaghetti to boost funds raised on the day, what a woman! In total they raised over £1600 for JPC Community Farm with funds still being raised - this is all before they even commence their 2019 fundraising plan.
The Firstsource Team met with Victoria Mullen from JPC community Farm and developed a full plan for 2019 which includes a festival day, an adult World Book Day and so much more. If you would like to work with JPC Community Farm, Victoria can work with your business no matter how large or small to create a fundraising plan for the year which will support engagement in your workplace and benefit a local charity.

The team has arranged several events already in the last two months including a charity football tournament at Goals Teesside, which the Managed Services team took by storm and won scoring a total of 26 goals and conceding only 3 in 10 games throughout the day. Well done to every person who turned out on a rainy Sunday to play. What an excellent day and a special mention must go to Ben Kemp as ‘Man of the Tournament’ - he scored so many goals we lost count!
Stacy and Jonny are keen to ensure that all the fundraising is also engaging for their staff as supporting the local community whilst also making Firstsource a great place to work is key. Stacy Lawlor, General Manager said ‘My staff are so on board with this project and love getting involved in fundraising and charity events, its very important for me that we make sure we are making these fundraising days fun and engaging for the staff too as that makes it even more special for me’.

I am a self taught photographer and academically trained cinematographer, I have been practicing in the art of image capture for ten years now. From a young age the technical side of photography such as the use of 35mm film captured my attention and started a journey which would soon become my career. By college, I was developing and printing my own film negatives, then for four years I studied at the Cleveland College of Art and Design before attending York St John University where I achieved an FdA, and BA (Hons) in Film and Television Production. Shortly after University, I began working independently and started to develop my own business called ‘Baguley Pictures’ which specialises in corporate and creative Photography, Videography, Aerial Photography and Graphic Design. My work experience includes assisting North East based Fashion Magazine, LA DI DA & working as a Press Photographer for the first Newcastle International Film Festival including celebrity guests such as; Richard Armitage, Jools Holland & Caroline Goodall. My photography has been displayed in local newspapers, and national magazines (LA DI DA, Filmmaker Magazine, The Chronicle & Hello!). Recently, I have worked alongside Dr. Paul Baguley & Marketing Manager, Adam Tanfield of Define clinics to produce a promotional advertisement video for Yarm High Street, aiming to produce more business for independent businesses. The video became an internet success with over 15,000 views in just four days on Facebook. My aim for the future is to work with other High Streets in the North Yorkshire region to support their local businesses.

Port Lympne was a once in a life time opportunity and boasts some of the most exclusive and extravagant accommodation in the world! I have managed venues nominated for UK wedding venue of the year, award winning restaurants and award winning accommodation. I believe my knowledge and experience has turned me into an expert trend spotter, building a knowledge of what is desirable and what there is a demand for. This insight allows me to help Chapters evolve into one of the most well known boutique hotels in the UK. I plan to make Chapters go from strength to strength to make it the most memorable hotel and restaurant in the North East. I am very passionate about helping local charities and I have already assisted in fundraising for "Restarting Hearts in Northallerton" and plan to help as much as possible with the amazing JPC Community Farm. It is my personal belief that every restaurant and hotel is only successful if the local communities it resides in supports it. The locals are the most vital customers and it is my belief that they deserve the very best. This style of management is the very reason I have been most successful and I look forward to continuing that style in the Teesside area and bring all these lovely people a hotel and restaurant they can be proud of.
