Welcome to La Maison Interiors We are a family run business and have been in the Furniture trade for around 20 years.

C

arol and Mike established the business by introducing a furniture section within their television business, Superscreen, at Cannon Park, in the early 90’s.

In 2009 they moved the furniture & accessories business and opened upstairs in Strickland & Holt, Yarm, under the name “Monks Table Designs”. Many will recall the adverts promoting the latest offers under the banner “Carol Say’s”. After a successful 3 years in Yarm, the shop was sold and Carol & Mike focused on the website and semi-retirement, However, they didn’t like retirement and as well as building the website business, they went on to develop a distribution business for the furniture trade. This business grew and they needed premises.

The distribution warehouse opened in Cannon Park in 2014 along with the re-opening of the shop “La Maison Interiors”. Carol and Mike’s son Craig and his wife Suzanne got involved with the business in 2015 and have brought with them their experience in customer service, sales, marketing and advertising. Craig previously worked at the Gazette and Suzanne ran her own beauty salon, Amethyst, for 10 years. It won’t be long before their children are involved too!!! The shop originally specialised in the French Shabby Chic style and whilst this is the foundation of our business we now also offer a huge range of Modern Contemporary and Traditional Furniture, Lighting and Accessories. Carol Say’s “If you are looking for something with the WOW factor or just that little bit different, La Maison Interiors is the place for you!” La Maison Interiors bridges the gap between the very expensive showrooms and buying from the internet. We sell at the same great internet prices but you can come in and meet us, touch, feel and see the quality of the products and get free guidance and advice from us before you order. If what you want is on our shop floor you can, of course, buy it and take it away there and then! Visit our beautiful showroom at Cannon Park, Middlesbrough or browse online at

We look forward to dealing with you!! 6

At Novi, we offer a unique combination of software innovation and the latest manufacturing technology to deliver you the finest in contemporary fitted furniture. Our specially developed design tool gives you the freedom to create a completely individual solution, with instant pricing and flexibility over material choices. Precision machining for ingenious concealed fixings and the latest panel edging technology ensure a perfect fit and a flawless finish. We have almost 30 years experience of designing and manufacturing for a wide range of discerning clients. In that time we have established a solid reputation for quality and good service. We operate from a 30,000ft2 manufacturing space with offices and showroom in Nottingham. We combine a craftsman's skilled eye for detail and finish with a workshop that reflects all the latest developments in flexible manufacturing technology. We have also recently opened a new showroom on the High Street in Yarm and welcome you to come and visit us.

We select all our materials for their appearance but we also value long term resilience. Some of the most important elements - the soft-closing drawer runners or the sliding door mechanisms are almost completely hidden from view but we take great care to select quality components with proven durability and performance. Our wardrobes are constructed with a full carcase - absolutely essential for long term durability. All the internal panels are jointed using carefully chosen concealed fixings to create a very strong, rigid structure with a peerless interior finish. Consequently our wardrobes are equally well suited to fitted or freestanding installations.

Gossip Interviews Basil Al Khabass Pilates Classes & Personal Instruction

1) What is the dusk till dawn challenge all about and why did you decide to start it initially?

I N YA R M

As a Muslim, I fast from dawn till dusk during the month of Ramadan, so that was the name sorted! For one month in the year, it’s my chance to put aside all the world's hustle and bustle and focus on my spirituality. Two years ago, I decided to put that into action by walking to a new city (approx 400 miles in total) to raise awareness and funds for a different charity each day.

Pilates for all levels Yoga for all levels Antenatal Pilates Post-natal Pilates

2) What made you decide to support JPC Community Farm This year? I met the Connaughton family behind the project (and their supporters) as I fought on their boxing show. I was touched by their passion for their “dream” and how it all stemmed from their love for their son James, who has cerebral palsy. It’s also a local project so it’s an investment for the community. 3) What are you hoping to achieve by involving young people with special needs in this year’s challenge?

Reformer and equipment classes

mail@studio21yarm.co.uk

Boxing is great for fitness, self-confidence, relieving stress and unleashing some energy. I wanted to give those kids a chance to access that through the “sweet science” like everybody else. 4) A bit of background history about yourself. Something about the boxing academy, Imran and the twins? Boxing on Teesside is on the rise with the coach Imran Naeem’s gym (natural progression Boxing Academy) leading the way. As well as (recent addition Simon Vallily), he has 3 undefeated boxers signed on with Boxnation and BT sports promoter Frank Warren. These are; Joe Maphosa (team GB at the amateur level), Kalam Leather and his twin, undefeated IBF Intercontinental champion Josh. Like Imran, these guys are down to earth and always willing to do stuff for the community, as was shown by the twins who helped out with the kids. Interviews Upcoming Singer and Songwriter

by James Stevenson

W

e got the chance to sit down with the ever beautiful and talented 22-year-old singer-songwriter Annabel Pattinson to talk about her latest single, Psycho Bitch, and headline show at the O2 Newcastle Hailing from the North East Annabel’s love affair with music began at a young age, “My dad played so I was always brought up with music and always had it around me growing up.” Annabel’s love of her craft falls firmly on the writing side, at age 13 when she first started writing her own songs is when she knew this was what she was meant to do. Annabel’s lyrics are evident in showing her love of selfexpression and finding the process cathartic. “I write all of my own songs, it’s the main reason behind my passion for music and why I enjoy it. It’s my way of dealing with things so it’s all personal to me.”

“Something will happen that I want to get out of my system so I’ll just go and write a song.” Annabel’s distinct acoustic indie pop is such a pleasure because it doesn’t rest on its laurels of being overly sincere and emotional. “I want my music to be fun, I don’t want it to be overly dramatic. I’m sarcastic in myself and try to put that into my writing. I think it really gives colour and life to it.” “I like artists with a bit more to them, Katy Perry’s first album was amazing and hilarious, I like the Arctic Monkeys, Blondie. I think Alanis Morissette is an amazing lyricist so I love her. I like indie and indie pop but love good lyricists the most.” Following on from her independently produced EP Annabel has toured the UK and played at venues such as The Sage

GOSSIP Gateshead, The Jacaranda Liverpool, The Garage London and The Cluny Newcastle and much more including her own headline shows and touring alongside The Coffee House Sessions. Looking forward to the next stage of her career Annabel signed a single deal for her track ‘Psycho Bitch’ which is now available. “The song is a bit crackers. It’s about wanting to smash someone’s windows but to kiss them goodbye at the same time, I think it’s pretty relatable! I didn’t want it to be so serious so had some fun with it.” To support the song Annabel filmed a music video in London which features her trademark personality. “It was very exciting! I got to storyboard it myself as well so it’s very much my own video.” “It was manic but a lot of fun, I’d like to thank Lance Anthony for being in the video as well he was really canny. We liked a lot of the unplanned elements like where we were filming there was a carousel so we included it and in one shot I’m singing in the street and someone passing by jumps in the frame and sings which we found hilarious so kept. It all feels natural.” Following from the single launch on June 1st Annabel headlined a show at the O2 Newcastle with her band and support from Craig Roddam, Amy Ridley and Sam Wright.

Annabel’s signature style, however, couldn’t be done without the help of her sponsors. “I’d like to thank Zanders Hair Design for their help with my poster, I wanted something quirky to stand out and they really helped with the 1950s/Audrey Hepburn style I wanted. And to Locks of Love hair for my extensions, and to Newcastle Hair and Beauty for all their talented work.” With Annabel’s stepping stones of progress, she is making a name for herself and there is no slowing down with success after success coming her way. “I’ve still got a lot of materials, and I’ll never stop writing. I’d love to do a full band tour, and maybe an album soon who knows?” Whatever is in store for the future Annabel is a local star and one to keep your eye on.

At her O2 Show Annabel debuted her new personal white leather jacket with her name and lips motif thanks to ‘Custom Artwerk’.

IN BUSINESS My name is

Marshall

Salon Business owner, Tilli Capelli Hairdressing My passion for hairdressing started when I got involved at the age of 13 as a Saturday girl in a small village of my childhood home in the Scottish Highlands. As much as I loved my hometown, at the age of 15 my parents had to make the decision to move nearer to Teesside so we could be closer to my grandparents due to their ill health. I soon got back into what I was most passionate about and that was my hairdressing. The opportunity came up for me to work in a busy salon in Yarm where my skills flourished whist working alongside a very talented stylist, June. We soon became good friends as we shared the same passion. My motto is “Tomorrow is not promised” if you want to want to do something you really need to grasp the opportunity and pursue it. My dad, who sadly passed away, was one of my biggest supporters. So finally, after 20 years as a stylist, working for other salons, it was time to make some changes and I took the plunge to become my very own entrepreneur Tilli Capelli was born. It wasn’t long before June decided to join me hiring a chair within Tilli Capelli so she could give extra attention to her long term clients. Our stylists are all leading professionals who are trained to the highest standards who care passionately about our clients and deliver a very personal and bespoke service to each individual customer. Our most popular treatment is colouring which I would say takes up around 80% of our total weekly treatments. I have always worked with Wella, which offer a great range of products for all hair types and colours and really helps us to keep on top of the everevolving colour trends, catering for all age groups. The business is growing and we work hard every day to realise our full potential.

RESOLUTION COMMUNICATIONS was launched by PR and marketing specialist Sharon Starkey three years ago. After more than 15 years in the marketing and public relations arena, I felt something was missing. I spoke to many friends and business owners who were telling me they needed their promotional material to deliver more. It was clear to see, business owners wanted advice and a plan that aligned with the objectives of the business, something that was targeted and more importantly, measurable. At that point Resolution Communications was born, offering marketing, PR, social media and events. We work closely with our clients, developing a strategic plan rather than a one off marketing piece. Our team acts as an extended marketing department to our clients, providing expertise and efficiency and allowing them to concentrate on what they do best; looking after the needs of their clients. We regularly work with our accounts to find and showcase the unique elements of their business, so it was important to me that we were able to offer a bespoke service, tailored to them. With an expertise in marketing and public relations, we use a mixture of design, copywriting and digital knowledge to get the message across. Resolution Communications was established three years ago and we have seen the staff numbers triple in the last 12 months. We work with clients in the business to business field, as well as lifestyle products selling to consumers and public sector organisations. The concepts are the same whoever the client; what is important is that you establish early on what you want to achieve and manage that message consistently whilst remaining true to the brand.

Councillors There are 12 Councillors, six for the east and six for the west; elections are held every four years. All Councillors are unpaid volunteers who strive hard to ensure that Ingleby Barwick continues to be a safe and pleasant place to live.

Town Council Meetings The Town Council, where possible, meet on the third Wednesday of the month, except during August when no meeting is held. Additional meetings are arranged, as and when required. Members of the public are welcome to attend Council meetings and are given the opportunity to make comments or raise concerns in the 10 minutes dedicated session for public participation at the start of the meeting. Regular monthly updates are provided by Ingleby Barwick Enforcement Service.

Activities/Projects Various projects have been undertaken including installation of the War Memorial, provision of the Christmas tree, progression of the proposed new Community Centre at The Rings, to name but a few. Proposed Community Centre, The Rings

Crime Prevention

The land on which the Community Centre is to be built is currently in the ownership of Persimmon Homes. It is anticipated that the land will be transferred to SBC who will then lease it to the Town Council, subject to the Town Council securing sufficient finance to build and maintain the community centre. Progress to date is as follows:

The Town Council has agreed to continue funding I.B. Enforcement Service in 2017/2018, the finance for which is raised through the parish precept. The cost to provide the dedicated service is approximately 13 pence per household per week. Residents can contact the Enforcement Service by ringing Stockton Security Centre on tel: (01642) 528439 7 Days a week from 0700hrs to 0300hrs.

I.B. Enforcement Service

• Planning permission has been approved • The tenders for the contract are due to be considered at a Special Meeting of the Town Council on 31st May, after which the amount of funding required for the project can be finalised. The funding will potentially be obtained from the following sources:

Anti-Social Behaviour hotline tel: (01642) 607943 Answered 24 hours a day. Crime Prevention The Town Council is currently looking at crime prevention to ensure the best use of funding. Cleveland Police & Crime Commissioner along with representatives from the Police, SBC Enforcement and Security/Surveillance attended the Town Council meeting in April 2017 to discuss the matter and the options available. An ‘evidence based’ Study has been initiated to ascertain the relevant information to assist the Town Council in their deliberations.

• Ingleby Barwick Town Council • Loan from the Public Works Loan Board (PWLB) • £50,000 from SBC towards the capital costs for the Youth Café

How will the Loan be raised? The Town Council is looking to seek ‘borrowing approval’ from the Secretary of State, which will enable them to take out a Loan. The decision to borrow and the amount of loan required will be considered at the Town Council meeting on 14th June 2017. The decision to seek borrowing approval from the Secretary of State will also be made at the meeting.

Estimated Loan Repayment Costs PWLB The Loan would be taken out over a 25-year period, with the repayments made through the Town Council’s annual precept. The guide figure for the Loan, which was used when setting the budget for 17/18, was £800,000. The estimated annual repayment costs being in the region of £44,000.

What is the cost to residents?

THE GREAT INGLEBY BARWICK

• The Town Council has not had to raise the precept to cover this. The annual cost per average band D property in 17/18 has been reduced by approx. 2.3%. Further information and regular updates will be provided.

Commencement on site • It is hoped that work on site will commence in early/mid 2018.

The Town Council would like to hear residents comments on the project, particularly in respect of seeking ‘borrowing approval’ from the Secretary of State to take out a Loan. Please send any comments in writing using the contact details provided by no later than Wednesday 14th June 2017.

AMANDA BELL ELITE MAKEUP STUDIO

ELITE MAKEUP ARTIST OPENS STUDIO IN THE NORTH EAST TO SHARE 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH HER CLIENTS AN ELITE makeup artist who has beautified the faces of many A-List celebrities and top models is today (MAY 11th) launching her own studio in the region to share her knowledge and expertise after 20 years in the industry.

A

manda Bell has worked on clients including Goldie Hawn, Sienna Miller and Emilia Fox, was head makeup artist at the BAFTAs and transformed models’ looks for London Fashion Week during her many years working in London for French luxury cosmetics house Lancôme. She returned to her home to the North-East and worked as a freelance makeup artist before deciding to set up her own studio on Norton’s high street to provide a dedicated, luxury space in which to train clients in the art of makeup through a range of masterclasses.

A

manda was the official head makeup artist at the BAFTAs for eight years and styled the makeup at numerous shows including at London Fashion Week and Central Saint Martins Graduates. Her new studio, above fashion boutique Christian Alexander, has space for up to six clients and group masterclasses start at £75 per person for 2.5hours. “I’ve designed the studio to be like every woman’s dream dressing room - a light, bright and chic space that every woman wants to be in – where they’ll learn what makeup best suits them and how to apply it to get the results they desire. “Women spend so much money on makeup and brushes, they bring them home and then don’t know what to do with them and it can be such a waste of money!

The mum-of-two has transformed The Loft in Constance House to cater for up to six clients at a time and she intends to run five different workshops from ‘complexion perfection’ to ‘red carpet glamour’, as well as private classes. Amanda, from Seaham, County Durham, said: “Over the past 20 years I’ve worked in very high profile, high octane environments and I’ve loved that, but I’ve realised this is what really makes me tick; makeup for real women who want to look and feel amazing in real life. “Women can get stuck in being the best version of themselves - stuck in the time they felt most beautiful and don’t move on years later – and I can teach them that with makeup they can create the best of themselves at any given age.”

“I want to teach women how to use and love their own make up by giving step by step demonstrations and personal one-on-one coaching, using their own products as far as possible.” Ultimately the goal for Amanda is to run her own makeup academy from the Norton studio to also deliver accredited courses for those looking to train and qualify as professional makeup artists.

Amanda herself was trained by some of the best make-up artists in the industry including Gucci Westman, a favourite for many Hollywood film stars, fashion houses and magazine editors, as well as internationally renowned “makeup magician” Fred Farrugia. She also trained in Paris with Oprah Winfrey’s personal makeup artist Ross Burton and learned the true art of makeup for black and Asian skins. The now 40-year-old worked for almost a decade in London for Lancôme, initially as a makeup artist in Harvey Nichols and then Selfridges, before the role of National Makeup Artist and Trainer for the UK was created specifically for her. She headed up a team of 25 elite makeup artists and trained a further 120 experts.

The Black Swan Brasserie Located on Guisborough high street incorporates the traditional English pub with a fine dining brasserie. The building which the business operates in has a lot of deep history that goes back to the roots of Guisborough as well as England and it’s religious history tied in with Guisborough Priory. The pub itself has a bright well lit warm interior and a wide selection of drinks to suit all favourites be it the rich Ale or the fine wines with the optional shots for the partygoers. The pub serves the traditional pub bar meals however the brasserie is the hidden gem. The pub is split between the official pub, however, a brief walk through the courtyard and you get to the brasserie. The brasserie is due to be redecorated with light airier colours but keeping its intimate setting. Welcoming you as you open the door is the bar which is well stocked similarly to the pub both of which offer delicious Cocktails which include the famous Mojito, Blackberry Mojito and a custom Cocktail that is only served at the Brasserie but I’m sure the secret ingredient is strawberry. The food inside the brasserie is excellent and cooked fresh and the new menu coming out follows the A la Carte style with a new menu with a Mediterranean twist ready for the summer coming soon. The food is prepared fresh and the service is quick with great sized portions. The food was filling and extremely tasty. Two dishes were served one being Sea bass with Croquettes served on a bed of asparagus and the second dish was a Cod fillet with mussels and

The building The Black Swan is based in has a lot of history that is confirmed to date back to the 17th century after recent renovations uncovered an old wall that Leeds University carbon tested to get a rough estimate on a date and is believed to have been the priories Coach House and stables linked to the building next door that used to be the old candle makers shop. Which is thought to have been burned down in the 16th century but the building is believed to have had an original presence since 1250AD.

A regular customer came in who has been coming into the Black Swan since the 1980’s and has said that everything has changed for the better in the time he has been coming in and that the staff, the food and decoration is improved, modern yet still sticking to traditional decor fitting the building’s history.

There is a set of tunnels underneath Guisborough that lead to the priory which is believed to have been

Stokesley apprentice toasts funding boost for studies

A Stokesley teenager keen to further her career in the hospitality sector has become the first apprentice to receive a prestigious educational grant. The Preston Trust, based in Stokesley, is providing financial support for Meghan Wilson who is currently part of the front of house team at Howard’s in the town and is studying for her level 2 hospitality apprenticeship at Middlesbrough College.

Meghan has been working at the family-run bistro since August 2016 where managers noticed the 16-year-old’s potential and offered to support her studies whilst she works full-time.

or vocational training. The charity has now started to offer support for extra training and apprenticeships for the first time in its history in response to a change in demand in the educational marketplace.

The new funding from the Preston Trust will help Meghan progress further with her studies at Middlesbrough College in courses including food hygiene and first aid. Meghan also hopes to progress to her level 3 hospitality apprenticeship and to become the youngest person in the country to obtain a personal licence for serving alcohol.

The group was founded in the mid-1900s and used funds invested from the sale of the old Preston Grammar School, formerly on College Square in Stokesley close to where Howard’s stands today. Tackle the mighty On Saturday 20th May 2017 The JBC accountants team competed against the might of inflatables and foam in the Gungho course, Leeds and bounced, climbed, crawled and slid their way to the finish line to raise funds for the JPC charity organisation supporting the construction and maintenance of the local charity that will create a big difference across our region. The Gungho course challenges participants in both the physically and mentally needing fitness and strong determination to overcome the inflatable obstacle course which requires teamwork to overcome. The course length was 5km and participants had to leap hurdles, scale the tall inflatable mountain peaks, and dodge between the inflatable pillars whilst keeping an eye on the competition on either side sending the pillars your direction. As the team ran a constant

stream of encouragement from the other members was needed but when it comes to the tunnels the team had to get down low on their hands and knees and army crawl through the darkness waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel to continue to the next obstacle. The race was not just against the other teams or for personal pride it was also against the weather with black rain clouds looming and coming ever closer. As they participants ran round the final corner to see the final hurdle it required the team to assist each other pulling each other up and over and descending in pairs. The Final part seemed the most fun descending in pairs into a big foam pit with a lot of shouting of excitement and happiness to have completed the monstrous course that was challenging and fun.

Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club is the youngest of three Middlesbrough Clubs, having been chartered in 1985. Since its formation, the Club has gained a reputation in Rotary for being innovative and breaking new ground. In the mid 1990s it established the North East Games for People with Disabilities and this event, which is now run by Rotary’s North East England District, has proved to be highly successful. In addition to a series of annual fund raising activities, the Club has run several special charity projects including sponsored walks over the Transporter Bridge and the Great North Bikini Challenge that attracted excellent publicity for

Rotary on Radio 2's Chris Evans Show. More details of recent and planned future activities can be found on our website. Recently the Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club sent its volunteers on their fourth visit to Yatton House this time to replace raised garden wooden surrounds and start to level the land. The Chairman of Yatton House and incoming President of Middlesbrough Erimus

Rotary Club, Dave Jackson, is keen to start the horticultural business to give the disabled members attending Yatton House the chance to get involved in gardening and running a small business. It was a hot day but the team enjoyed the work on the raised gardens.

1. Ombre Nails - Ombre 1 hair is very big right now and ombre nails are just as in-trend. If you want elegant wedding nail art designs with a slightly more modern twist, these are the kind you should look at. The beautiful fade is barely noticeable but is striking and simple all at the same time. What’s not to love about them? They would even work with multiple tip-shapes too… Pointed, square, coffin, and even you could even do this for short wedding nails too.

Living Proof interview with Sunflowers Catherine Burrell In this interview Catherine shares the difficulties she has had to face during her life. Catherine talks to us about bullying and how this affected her relationships around her and self-confidence. Chatherine shares this emotional story with us and talks to us about her diagnosis of dyslexia and narcolepsy, but most of all shows us how she has used her personal experience to drive her forward to retrain and learn more about how to help others with mental illness, confidence and self-esteem issues. Catherine has recently set up her own private clinic as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and offers a range of therapeutic services to help children, young people and adults as well as other professionals. Living Proof is a feature that showcases all types of women and men and showcase how they’re living a life of purpose and passion - their way!

The Interview What were you like growing up Catherine? I have very few memories of my childhood but the happiest ones are of time spent with my family. Being one of four siblings and having four cousins living five doors away, there were always a lot of people around. If you asked my parents what I was like as a child, they would say that they rarely had to tell me off and that I was well mannered, sensitive and sensible. I have always enjoyed music, playing the clarinet and piano, I sang and played in the church youth music group, later going on to play the organ at Mass too. Looking back to school, there was one girl in particular who bullied me. I’d try to joke and act like I was not bothered, but inside I was both confused and terrified; one day she was a friend and the next day - silence. This accompanied sly kicks under the table in lessons,, and turning others against me. These actions, along with others, impacted not only on my confidence and self-esteem but my friendship groups. I found it hard to truly trust others and make genuine friends. In my final year at school, I started to have episodes of low mood and anxiety.

Did this continue in college? College was very different initially, in comparison to school I loved it, I felt like I could be me and no one would make judgements and I made new friends. Only, I did find that the problems I had experienced at school followed me to college. I had friends in different circles and again would flit from one group to another. I also began to realise just how challenging the academic work was, I did not get it. Deep down, I knew I wasn’t stupid but I just couldn’t understand why things were not making sense to me. Confiding in a friend about my anxieties, she encouraged me to see my GP and I was referred for counselling. I changed course after a year from A Levels to GNVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care, this also meant that while my friendship groups moved on to start University life I had to stay back at Sixth Form for an additional year.

Did you always know what you wanted to be growing up? I have always wanted to do something to help and look after others, and perhaps this was as a result of my experiences. At Sixth Form College, I changed courses as I knew then for sure that being a nurse seemed the best route in order to help others. I then went to St Martin’s College, Carlisle and I studied a Diploma in Health Education specialising in Children’s Nursing. I loved University life but,

40

JuneGossip.indd 40

unfortunately, my problems with falling asleep and keeping up with the academic studying continued. I started to become quite introvert and found myself slowly isolating myself from friends again. While returning home to attend a wedding reception, my parents were shocked to see the signs of the emotional and physical stress I was under. I had to make the hard decision to take a year out in order to get myself well again. It was during this time that I was diagnosed with Dyslexia. College arranged for an assessment to be carried out after a friend recommended I look into this as a possible cause. The results indicated that I had a reading age of an 11-year-old and spelling age of a 12-year-old - I was 21! I couldn’t believe it, after all these years, the reason I had struggled so long wasn’t because I was thick or stupid (like I once thought) I was Dyslexic! The EP assessment also showed I had an IQ of 109 and that gave me the confirmation to know that I was capable, very capable. I returned to college, with a fresh start. This time getting the academic support I needed and my results began to soar. My confidence grew, but there were times where I struggled to get up on mornings and would still not feel refreshed after a full night’s sleep. It was at this point my GP referred me to the Neurology Department at the RVI Hospital Newcastle. After a year of tests, my results kept coming back as normal. I was told I needed to do more exercise. On the contrary, I was a keen runner at the time. With no answers, I had to continue struggling.

GOSSIP What happened next? I graduated College as a Children’s Nurse in 2003, returned home to live with my parents and began working on a Medical Children’s Ward in one of the local hospitals. While working on the Children’s Ward for 2 years, I met a lot of children and young people who presented with mental health problems, eating disorders or self-harming. It was then I realised that my time was limited on the ward. I wanted to do more for them than I was able. Another job opportunity arose and I took it. I left the Children’s Ward and I began working in a Community Child Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS) Team as a Community Mental Health Nurse. Around the same time, I was referred back to the Neurology Department, this time at James Cook University Hospital and was diagnosed with Narcolepsy shortly afterwards in November 2005. After all this time, 10 years on since the days when I started falling asleep in college, I was diagnosed and I finally found out why I kept falling asleep.

I’m sure you were relieved after your diagnosis so what happened next? Being prescribed medication to control my condition, I worked for 11 years in CAMHS and during this time my role developed from a Community Mental Health Nurse through to CAMHS Clinician. Developing my role and skill base meant that I was able to build therapeutic relationships with the families I worked with, delivering therapy for a range of social, emotional and mental health disorders including Anxiety, Depression, OCD, ADHD and ASD. Alongside work, I completed a BSc Hons in Practice Development, CAMHS. Then in 2014 my Post Graduate Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapies ‘Cognitive Behavioural Therapy’ in 2014.

How did you meet Christopher, your now husband? The first time we met was on Christmas Day 2003. Caroline, a good friend I had worked with on the Children’s Ward, invited me out with her friends on the night. We became friends and began dating in 2005. Chris proposed on the 7th November 2008 and we got married 7 months later on 7th June 2009. It was the happiest day of my life because not only had I met someone who I trusted and loved, he was my best friend and most of all loved me too – just the way I was!

We have two sons, Tom, age 6 and Harry, 2 years old. I love motherhood and, while I find it challenging at times, it’s interesting to see as our boys grow, how different they are from one another. Prior to returning to work, I raised concerns with regards to my medication as it began to stop working I was feeling constantly tired, and had my driving license revoked. Eventually, I got the right medication and I went from taking 6 tablets a day to 17 and I still continue to take this many now. I also have to build in times during the day when I can sleep and this means relying heavily on my parents to help out with the children. I couldn’t have got through any of this without the love, kindness and support of my family. Disheartened by the difficulty I faced with returning to work, I handed in my notice in March 2016. I had no idea how it would work out, but I knew I had to try something different. I left the NHS and set up my own private practice, ‘Sunflower Cognitive Therapies Limited’. Over the last year, I have developed close working relationships with numerous schools and professionals in the area, while offering private CBT to clients of all ages and with young people. I have designed and am having published, three training programmes, that are delivered to teaching staff. I have also provided teaching sessions and presentations to classes and whole year groups.

You certainly have had a roller coaster of a ride so what lies ahead for you now Catherine? Working for myself is amazing and I love what I do so it doesn’t seem like work, but I need to look after my health. There currently is no cure for my condition so I just need to be mindful of my limitations and physical warning signs that tell me to slow down. I am currently planning a Summer Charity Ball at Wynyard Hall in aid of the JPC Community Farm and I am very excited to see what else the future brings.

What’s the biggest life lesson you’ve learnt so far? It’s the small steps we take that help us achieve our long-term goals. This is my motto, it has helped me hugely and I now share it with my clients because no matter where you are now, you start from that point and take one step at a time. I am ‘Living Proof’ that you can use your personal experience to the benefit of others and that’s what I try to do every single day – Make a difference and help others be the best they can by having confidence and self-belief.
