The Town Council set its budget in January 2018 and the precept requirement for 2018/2019 is £155,900. hen I was asked recently by our Editor, Julie, if I would like to try out the LumiSpa from ageLoc, I nearly bit her head off for the cheek of it! But then, I’ve never had a great relationship with my skin so decided it was probably a good idea to give it a go. I get bored easily of the combinations of all the different face washes, exfoliators, special mitts and moisturisers I’m told I need to use just to keep on top of my skin. I don’t suffer with any skin conditions as such so that level of maintenance is just outrageous, all just to feel normal.

When I took the kit home and inspected all of it’s elements, I realised it was one complete set and that I could actually ditch all of my other bottles and creams. My kit came in a handy carry case which contains everything you will ever need, including a lotion for each different skin type.

I began using it right away - twice a day for just 2 minutes. You only need to use the one lotion which goes on first and then the handheld device does all the work for you. It is designed to give the four main areas just 30 seconds of attention each, letting you know at each 30 second interval with an obvious change in rhythm so that you can move to the next area of your face. It came with 2 different heads - normal and firm. I went straight for the firm and after my first 2 minutes of cleansing, I felt such a difference in my skin. It was softer and smoother, which I’ll admit, you can achieve with your run of the mill exfoliating lotions but something I noticed that you can’t get with exfoliators was the brightness I could see in my skin. Colour was returning that I hadn’t even realised was gone. Under the surface, my skin felt healthier, I suppose, because it had been revitalised by the motion of the LumiSpa device. I also didn’t need to use my usual moisturiser afterwards as I had selected the right lotion for my skin type which didn’t dry out my skin. Also, because there were no tiny beads scratching at my skin, I had no rough patches afterwards which I sometimes experience with exfoliators. It was quick and simple to use. Over the two weeks that I used the LumiSpa, it made mornings and evenings much more pleasant in the bathroom as I was finished so quickly. It was also fun to use with no complications - so much so that my 7 year old daughter had a go and loved the feeling it made on her face as it whizzed around. I’d recommend the LumiSpa to anyone who feels they have tried everything and nothing seems to work as well as to those who would just like to claw back a little me-time from the daily rituals. This is where I discovered ‘The Harrogate Candle Company’, ‘The Pop-Out Card company’ and Sue Fenlon and Sally Anson (Sweet Designs). The products that I stock and sell are handmade by local people. i.e, Harrogate, Newcastle and Northumberland. What I love most is that I am able to pick up the phone and have a chat with my suppliers, they are the people that put their heart into designing all everything.

I thoroughly enjoy my customer contact and I get a real buzz from handing out my fragrances cards to every person that walks past to see their reaction. I can now gauge if it’s a hit or not. I can always find the right fragrance to suit you, be it a candle or a diffuser. My first huge event is on 23rd March – 25th March at York Racecourse. It’s the ‘Living North Spring Fair’. I am very excited to be exhibiting at this venue for 3 days and hope it’s the start of much more to come. Mary Martin is a self-taught, award winning fashion designer setting fearless trends and taking London and Africa by storm. Mary is still studying fashion in London, which is remarkable considering she was asked to headline the Mercedes Benz International Fashion Week 2015 in Accra Ghana, and as a result was honoured as the best designer in Africa. Mary has a faithful fan-base of celebrities who adore her outrageous, bespoke designs and her self-produced catwalk shows in Mayfair are always a sell-out. A drive to succeed and a desire to ensure longevity in her designs, Mary is on a mission to ensure her designs surpass her as an individual. A tall order, as Mary’s personality shines through everything she does. Her Mary Martin London collections include a tribute to the late “David Bowie”, the “Cecil the Lion Dress” that went viral and was also featured on the BBC News 2015 and the Apprentice 2018. I loved my mother. She was beautiful, practical and very, very fertile. I was one of thirteen children and being the seventh I was the one in the middle. Now you’d think that the middle one would be cocooned and comforted by the six children either side and it would be a comfortable place to be. But I felt invisible; the one who got all the castoffs. When it came to clothes they went to Lorna to Grace to Faith to Norma to Sybil to me and by the time those clothes 36

came to me while they were clean they were a little holy and I chose the word ‘holy’ very deliberately. One item of clothing I always got fresh were new homemade knickers. I would sit on the chaise lounge and watch my mother as she sewed the elastic into the waist. Now while I was made to sit there in silence because I often played up, I absorbed everything my mother did in terms of threading the cotton in the sewing machine and the fabrics she used. This form of discipline was the life lesson that has made me into the designer I am now. Greeted by laid-back Caribbean vibes complimented by the quirky decor and lots of comfy tables and seats, we felt instantly welcome and were shown straight to a table. We then ordered a selection of dishes from the wide choice available and loved the variety of spices, jerks and flavourings that were available with many of the dishes. We also have to commend the dishes for vegetarians and vegans which was in no way limited or inferior to the main menu when it came to choice or flavours. Top picks of the night included the Crispy Okra, Goat Curry, Pulled Pork Kingston Toasties and for vegetarians and vegans the Spiced Chickpea Wrap. Another pleasant surprise (especially to the parents of the group) was the children menu. In place of the usual nuggets, Turtle Bay offers burgers, grilled chicken and cheese, tomato and chicken flatbreads on its little turtle menu which the children fully embraced along with their free crayons and activity sheets.

Gossip meets Matty Street of

TeamKarting The UK’s Highest Rated Indoor Karting Track As the 21-year-old CEO of TeamKarting, Matthew Street is immensely passionate about motorsport. Having competed from the age of 12 he tells us how Motorsport can be a costly sport where talented drivers don’t always make it without enough financial backing and support. Matty comes from a workingclass family so at the age of 14 when he won a £30k scholarship, doors were suddenly swung open for him. Early in his school career, Matty was diagnosed with dyslexia/dyspraxia and on the verge of Aspergers Syndrome (a form of autism). Predicted very poor grades and expected to achieve nothing, a love for motorsport helped him to deal with this and to achieve academic success. Finishing school with 8 GCSEs, Matty then completed a Level 3 Motorsport engineering course in college which led to University where he studied Motorsport Management & Logistics. TeamKarting was Matty’s next stop as a part-time track marshal but he had bigger ambitions and within ten months, had worked his way up to Executive Manager. At just 19, he was overseeing the running of the full company and managing a team of 25 staff. In July 2017, Matthew bought out TeamKarting and became CEO at the age of just 21! Having a strong desire to help young people, including those with disabilities, his most recent project was Girls In Motorsport, which was backed by the royal family, and led Matty to a meeting with Prince Harry in 2016.

They have also hosted a Racing With Autism Day and recently won an award for being Autism Friendly and were presented with it at the Autism Heroes Awards 2017. A deep sense of social responsibility is what drives Matty’s reinvestment into the grassroots of motorsport, helping to make it more inclusive to all irrespective of physical, mental, academic and cultural background and offering a number of bespoke sessions to meet a variety of needs.

But it was only cardboard cut-outs of the stars that lined the red carpet during the evening celebration at Mill Volvo’s showroom on Preston Farm, attended by 150 Teessiders. Guests got a first glimpse of Volvo’s impressive new family SUV model, the XC40, which has already been named Car of the Year 2018 by Whatcar? magazine, dubbed Britain’s biggest and best car buyer’s guide. Mill Volvo’s North East operations director Jeff Tabb, who’s based at the firm’s Stockton dealership, says he expects the new XC40 to help Mill sell 3,000 new units across its range in the region this year. “It has already been an excellent start to the year,” he said. “The franchise has ambitions to do 48,000 units nationwide this year, and we expect to represent 3,000 of those across the whole range in the North-East alone. “We’ve already hit our targets in the first two months of the year, so there’s a real confidence around the franchise at the moment.”

The XC40 was unveiled by all Volvo dealerships nationwide during a simultaneous launch night. Lagonda aims to be the world’s first zero emission luxury brand. It will confound traditional thinking and take full advantage of the latest advances in electrification and autonomous driving technologies, which amount to the biggest revolution in landbound transportation since the invention of the car.
