When we’re deciding what to include The The in The Go! List, we try to reflect the spirit of St. Louis. ❡ Who is pushing boundaries in the kitchen, onstage or in the studio? Which new (or old) List List List attractions and2016 events are people 2016 2016 buzzing about? What historic spots deserve a fresh look? ❡ Those often are tough decisions, but highlighting great things in our community is something we love doing. ❡ Welcome to the fourth annual issue of The Go! List, a celebration of the best people, places and things in St. Louis. You’ll find our picks in 85 categories, along with readers’ selections decided by more than 30,000 votes at STLtoday.com. ❡ We toasted with the honorees at a party April 21 at the Missouri History Museum — beneath a giant replica of Lucky Lindy’s plane, appropriately — and now we present The Go! After facing delays when plans were announced in 2010 and then skepticism over whether it would ever come to fruition, the newly opened National Blues Museum is the go-to blues experience for St. Louis. The requirements for a sports bar are few — which probably explains the proliferation of sports bars: booze, plenty of TVs, happy hour specials and food. Wheelhouse downtown has all that covered, but

it’s not your typical dingy, framed-jerseys-on-the-wall kind of sports joint. The 10,000-square-foot space has an upscale, uncluttered feel, with exposed brick and concrete, high ceilings, patio seating and proximity to Busch Stadium. Best St. Louis director

Suki Peters More info 314-361-5664; stlshakespeare.org

The new artistic director of St. Louis Shakespeare showed her hand quickly, focusing on brainy comedies with a literary bent. Whether she’s directing (“The Liar,” “The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler”) or not (“Wild Oats”), Suki Peters reaches out to a wide audience without sacrificing stature. And of course, she’s true to the troupe’s namesake: Peters also directed its recent production of “Richard III.” JN Readers’ pick: Gary F. Bell

cooperates). And the audience, picnicking on the lawn or enjoying the pre-show entertainment, is totally relaxed. But the festival also includes Shake38, a communitywide series of events celebrating Shakespeare’s oeuvre. Not to mention Shakespeare in the Streets, new adaptations of plays in the canon that take place in local neighborhoods. (This year’s show will run Sept.

16-18 in Maplewood.) Add it all up, and the festival could change some old assumptions. You can take Shakespeare on your own terms, at your ease. JN Readers’ pick: Shakespeare Festival St. Louis

grace and authority to the characters he plays — and he has the imagination to take on work that pushes the bounds of conventional theater. This spring, he delivered back-to-back performances of two very different men: a troubled widower who thinks he is haunted by his wife’s ghost in “Shining City” at Upstream Theater and a music professor who’s haunted by terrible memories in “Old Wicked Songs” at the New Jewish Theatre. The men had nothing in common, but thanks to Vogel, we got to know both of them intimately. JN Readers’ pick: Joneal Joplin

Best St. Louis stage actress

Amy Loui A veteran of the St. Louis stage, Amy Loui has played her share of mothers and neighbors. But she soared to new levels in the heartrending one-woman drama at Mustard Seed Theatre, “The Amish Project,” playing a wide range of characters, from innocent schoolgirls to a killer. Layering a factbased, horrific story with redeeming grace, she made theatergoers eager to learn what she’ll be up to next. JN Readers’ pick: Sarajane Alverson

Under artistic director Deanna Jent, Mustard Seed Theatre consistently presents plays that have a lot to say about society and our connections with one other. But that doesn’t mean a bunch of lectures — far from it. Mustard Seed has mounted everything from classics (its brilliant “Measure for Measure”) to brand-new plays (the futuristic “An Invitation Out,” the upcoming “Bosnian/ American,” and Jent’s own drama about autism, “Falling”). One show, the a cappella World War I musical “All Is Calm,” quickly turned into a new St. Louis holiday tradition. Catch it this year if you haven’t already; this is its last outing. Once again, Jent will direct. JN Readers’ pick: Repertory Theatre of St. Louis

Stages St. Louis Where Kirkwood Community Center, 111 South Geyer Road, Kirkwood • More info 314-821-2407; stagesstlouis.org

OK, Stages St. Louis doesn’t usually use a live band. But that has not been a problem for its enthusiastic audiences, who are known for their love of classic musicals but have been extremely open in their embrace of new works, such as the hugely popular “Always ... Patsy Cline.” With its jewel-box sets and glamorous costumes, Stages founders Jack Lane and Michael Hamilton satisfy one of the main appetites that musicals address — and they have a knack for finding talented, not-yetfamous performers who give their all. The 2016 sea-

Michele Friedman Siler Siler often works at small theaters — which means that her costumes generally need to come in on tight budgets. But she makes up for dollars with creativity and with her keen use of details that reveal character. In “Old Wicked Songs” at New Jewish Theatre, she showed an uptight young pianist evolving from jackets and

ties to sweaters and jeans as he gained insight into himself. In “Blithe Spirit” at the St. Louis Actors’ Studio, she captured the drape and style of glamorous midcentury outfits — including a witty gray gown for its ghostly heroine. And for St. Louis Shakespeare’s modern-day, gender-bending “Hamlet,” she nailed status and mood with everything from the prince’s ripped khakis to Gertrude’s slinky black jumpsuit. For the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis’ world-premiere production of “Georama” in the intimate Emerson Studio Theatre, Neale designed a 600-foot-long scroll, featuring scenes of life along the 19th century Mississippi River. The scroll provided changing backdrops to suggest the work of the play’s main character, painter John Banvard. The proportions could not be more different. Gateway Arch Where St. Louis riverfront • More info 877-982-1410; gatewayarch.com

This iconic monument features a ticketed ride to the top for a magnificent view of the city. The Arch grounds and visitor center have been undergoing a $380 million renovation project, making this 630foot architectural wonder and visitor center an even bigger draw. Until construction is finished, only tram rides to the top of the Arch are available.

Civil War artifacts including uniforms, weapons and medical equipment — lots of saws and cutting tools! — help bring to life the story of the soldiers, guerrilla fighters, slaves and ordinary people who lived in the middle ground of the war between the North and the South. The museum’s newest exhibits focus on the history of its home, Jefferson Barracks, and Hollywood’s depiction of the Civil War. While you’re there, pay your respects

Before there was Nelly, before Ike and Tina, even before Chuck Berry, there was Scott Joplin. The King of Ragtime wrote the influential “Maple Leaf Rag” and “The Entertainer,” among dozens of other tunes. His modest flat on Delmar Boulevard has been maintained with a turn-ofthe-century feel, lighted by gaslight and decorated with period furnishings. A player piano provides a syncopated soundtrack to visitors’ time travel. CS

Sure, we have a great Fourth of July celebration. LouFest hosts some can’t-miss bands. And PrideFest just keeps growing. But visit any major metropolitan area and you can find festivals of that ilk. There’s only one city that’s bold enough — some might say spicy enough — to put a root vegetable at the center of

There’s nothing like a Fourth of July parade to make our hearts swell with pride: the marching bands, classic cars, spectators waving tiny American flags. The VP Parade dates to 1878 and most recently has found a home in Forest Park — but its starspangled sizzle is the same. (The parade returns to its

Yes, there’s a human behind this Twitter account, but it’s more fun to read when you imagine an anthropomorphized “fun bus” posting the tweets and retweets. Gus Gus is a business account but highlights the fun to be had in and around St. Louis. From the opening of the National Blues Museum

“A magpie for rust and decay, I share my photos of the day to day,” reads Allison Woodworth’s Instagram bio. The ArchCity Defenders are determined to ruin all those crooked lawyer jokes for us. Attorneys at the nonprofit, which was founded in 2009, provide a voice for the voiceless in our community: the homeless, working poor, mentally ill and immigrants. ArchCity Defenders give free “holistic” legal aid, meaning they connect their clients to social services, such as drug treatment and employment help. And they push for policy change, with a focus in the past year on reforming municipal court practices that profit off the poor. CS Readers’ pick: Yadier Molina
