World-class degrees

Real-world learning

Macquarie University equips you with a global mindset and an internationally respected degree.

A Macquarie education is also about far more than classroom learning; it’s about real-world learning.

• Our degrees help you develop creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills – capabilities that will benefit you now and in the future.

• When you experience a Macquarie education you don’t just learn from textbooks, you learn from internationally renowned researchers, through collaboration with industry, and through our unique PACE (Participation and Community Engagement) program, so that you can see the practical application of your knowledge in real-life organisations and environments.

• All of our degrees have been developed with graduate outcomes in mind – they offer both specialisation and breadth of learning to ensure you explore your intellectual, social and creative capacity.

An interdisciplinary approach Macquarie pioneered interdisciplinary study – an approach which teaches you to think more broadly, to tackle the big questions in life and the things that really matter to society.

Renowned teachers At Macquarie we know that experiencing interdisciplinary and hands-on research and teaching gives you the lifelong skills for a real-world career. We translate what we learn in our research, and through collaboration with industry, into what we teach you.

• Many of the world’s greatest achievements and innovations have resulted from an interdisciplinary approach. This is why a Macquarie degree will benefit you now and into the future. • Though you might not yet know exactly what you want to do with your life, and you’ll probably change jobs throughout your career, this approach to learning – being able to think on your feet across problems – will definitely give you an edge.

Macquarie offers a variety of learning experiences that are structured to ensure you get the most out of your degree. These range from lectures and tutorials to field work, practical assignments and work-based placements depending on your degree.

Lectures Lectures are where you will learn most of your degree content. The length of lectures vary from unit to unit but most run for an hour or more. Some lectures take place in very large theatres with several hundred students, while others are held in smaller rooms with a handful of other students.

PHOTO: Paul wright

PHOTOs: corey Butler

Modes of study

Fast-track your degree Session 3 is an opportunity to accelerate your studies by taking one or two units during summer. It is intensive, running for six weeks from early December (five weeks of teaching and one week of exams). Units offered in Session 3 have identical learning outcomes, means of assessment and prerequisite structures as their equivalents offered at other times of the academic year, though the shorter length of the session may mean that these units will be delivered using online or group sessions, as well as face-to-face teaching. Find out how to fast-track your degree with Session 3 mq.edu.au/courses/session_3

Tutorials Tutorials, or ‘tutes’, generally include 10 or 20 students and are an opportunity to ask your tutor questions and talk about the material with fellow students. You may also be asked to complete weekly assignments or present a paper to your group.

Online lectures

Macquarie recognises that students of today lead busy lifestyles. Providing flexible learning options is one way of helping you to achieve a high-quality learning experience. Having your lectures available online means you can listen to recordings in your own time. Some students use online lectures as an additional learning tool to reinforce and review the lecture content. Others use it as a lecture substitute if they are not able to attend face-to-face.

“My time in Peru was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had. There are so many integral life skills and lessons that I’ve learnt, which I couldn’t have possibly ever learnt within the walls of any classroom. The group I was so fortunate to be a part of became like a family and we shared so many awesome memories. We were all challenged physically, mentally and emotionally and it has allowed us to learn so much more about ourselves. At the same time, we were so privileged to be able to provide a hand in a wonderful community and learn from them as well. I will remember the experience forever and it motivates me to live life to its fullest.” Nathan Millar Bachelor of Science with Diploma of Education PACE placement with Peru’s Challenge

Experience Macquarie’s curriculum difference Part of what makes Macquarie Australia’s number 1 modern university is our unique curriculum. In addition to world-class interdisciplinary degrees that provide you with a solid knowledge base, our unique program called PACE (short for Participation and Community Engagement) will open up loads of extra opportunities for you in the modern world. While some universities offer community-based real-life projects as add-ons to formal study, Macquarie is the only university in Australia to offer fully integrated practical experiences within our undergraduate curriculum. This means that your classroom learning and your participation activities actually relate to one another, which provides a complementary perspective to your education. In other words, you get to put all of your ‘textbook knowledge’ into practice while working with real-life businesses, governments and communities. Such experiences help you develop communication, leadership, professional and interpersonal skills; as well as practical knowledge; a greater understanding of the workplace environment; and the opportunity to broaden your horizons.

What employers want Graduating with the kinds of skills that PACE provides greatly improves your career prospects as employers can see that you have the winning combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

“The PACE program is seen as fundamental to our business as it allows the company to build internal talent. Apart from the tangible benefits, there are the intangible ones as well; students bring such an energy and enthusiasm into the workplace. We have had a number of students come back after their degree, and some stayed on part-time throughout their final year.” Simon Cowl Vice-President, Human Resources GlaxoSmithKline

Keith Power General Manager Human Resources Beiersdorf Australia

People, Planet and Participation Participation is one of Macquarie’s 3 Ps. The other two are known as People and Planet units. Currently all students undertake a People and Planet unit as part of their degree and over time, everyone will also complete a Participation unit. Together, the 3 Ps underpin our undergraduate curriculum. Your People unit will give you an understanding of what it means to live in the social world, and to develop cultural or social literacy, while your Planet unit will help you develop scientific literacy and understand what it means to live in the physical world.

PHOTO: Paul wright

“For our business, Macquarie’s PACE program provides a valuable opportunity to attract high-quality talent and tap into our future high performers and potential leaders. It brings a refreshing energy, different thought processes, and ensures we understand our grass roots leadership.”

“My PACE experience has made me more confident, better organised and given me the chance to build strong business relationships. One of the best things about my experience has been the ability for me to identify my weaknesses, and as a result I have been able to take up subjects to improve my skills in those areas. I have had the opportunity to work on real business projects like planning events, working with corporate sponsors, and have been mentored by my senior managers. This has definitely made me sure that a career in motorsport is what I want to pursue after graduation.” Nicola King Bachelor of Business Administration PACE placement with V8 Supercars

PACE takes you places

“I have learnt to multitask, manage myself in a stressful environment, and to interact with many different kinds of people. I have also gained invaluable animal handling skills. I have come to understand the benefit of reflection, and in turn have learnt quite a lot about my strengths and weaknesses and just generally more about myself.

PACE activities are available at an international, national and local level, and your participation can take many forms – internships, field trips, community development projects or service-learning opportunities.

Go local By participating in a PACE project locally you could be: • assisting with camera work at a national TV network • contributing to the management of one of Australia’s largest sporting events • completing a social research project with a local council • working with Indigenous tourism operators to build their community-based businesses • raising funds through music projects to be donated to specific charities • interning at a leading Australian company

Go overseas By participating in a PACE International project you could be: • building community infrastructure and working with school children in Peru • empowering street children in the Philippines • improving the health of young people in India • supporting Indigenous communities in Malaysia • working with young people on welfare projects in Vietnam

It has given me practical experience in the marine science environment that would have been extremely difficult to gain otherwise. As I am intending to be a marine scientist it was really valuable.”

“Our PACE projects involved a small-scale evaluation of the centre’s student volunteering seminars, the drafting of policy recommendations to ensure more ‘youth-friendly’ volunteer engagement, and a revision of existing surveys and feedback forms to ensure they were relevant for young people. Without the students’ help, these projects could not have been completed. They showed a commitment to the internship, but also to the organisation and its mission as a whole. The centre really benefitted from their youth voice and fresh perspective.” Jacinthe Brosseau Community Development Manager The Centre for Volunteering

“Partaking in a PACE unit was a highly rewarding experience that stands out as being one of the best steps I took in my degree. I was initially unsure and unaware of the opportunities out there and volunteering with the Fostering Young Lives program allowed me to develop a keen interest in child protection and foster care. It wasn’t long before I realised my passion for this field of work and decided that it was what I want to do. I now have a permanent part-time position as a case worker assistant and couldn’t be happier.” Hamsa Hamwi Bachelor of Arts – Psychology with Diploma of Education PACE placement with The Benevolent Society

“Inner West Neighbour Aid and Macquarie University’s PACE initiative are so well matched. There is the obvious sense of compassion and community spirit that binds this partnership, but there is also an underlying shared vision for the future. Each student who joins us brings their skills and insights to support our organisation reach our goals sooner. For us as an organisation, the PACE initiative adds valuable social capital to our present and future services.”

“Studying abroad at the University of Calgary has been one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had. I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity and would do it again in a heartbeat. One of the most frequently asked questions I got from people in Canada during my exchange was ‘why come here in winter? It’s so cold!’. Walking around a campus covered in a white blanket of snow was certainly something I had to get used to. But skiing the famous slopes of the Rocky Mountains on the weekends and attending NHL ice hockey games were just some of the extraordinary pluses of being in Canada in winter. I was also surprised at how similar my classes were to my classes back home. The structure, content and teaching style were so alike, I had no problems adjusting to Canadian university life.” Alexandra Page Bachelor of Arts – Psychology Exchange at University of Calgary

Alice Plioplis

Stephen Ahern

Be part of our graduate success Alice Plioplis

Stephen Ahern

Alice Plioplis’ Macquarie degree has led her to a profession where she combines skills with detective work – identifying contaminated land and devising ways to remediate it.

Ahern’s company, Ahern Media & Training, has recently played a crucial role in the launch of Afghanistan’s first professional media training institution, Nai Media Institute (NMI). NMI will deliver a twoyear Diploma in Media focused on radio, television and new media.

Bachelor of Science Senior geologist, Environmental Earth Sciences

Bachelor of Arts with Diploma of Education CEO Ahern Media & Training

She was recognised in 2010 with a Young Achiever Award from the Australian Contaminated Land Consultants Association. “When I first started working at Environmental Earth Sciences I realised the approach was much the same as it was at uni – prepare a hypothesis, collect data in the field, analyse and test the field data in the laboratory, create maps and drawings, then interpret the analytical results.”

In 2009, Ahern was awarded an Order of Australia Media for his services to media education in Australia and internationally. He previously worked for the ABC and the British Consulate-General in a media career spanning 30 years. As the troops pull out of Afghanistan, media will play an important role in the reconstruction of the country. “To win people’s hearts and minds, you have to win their radios, televisions and mobile phones.”

Debora Di Dio

Master of Development Studies and Culture Change United Nations World Food Programme After graduating from Macquarie in 2010 Di Dio was nominated an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development with the United Nations World Food Programme in Bangladesh. The Programme is the UN’s frontline agency in the fight against hunger. After completing her 12-month assignment, she stayed on with the programme as a consultant, working across a number of regional projects in the areas of food security, nutrition and education. “The World Food Programme in Bangladesh is a catalyst of practical hunger innovations,” Di Do says. “There are some truly ground-breaking initiatives here.”

Tim Hart

Sabrin Rahman

Tim Hart

Sabrin Rahman has been recognised as one of Australia’s Brightest Minds. She received this honour in 2008 just two years after graduating from Macquarie.

Having begun his career at Macquarie, Australian singer and songwriter Tim Hart returned this year to become an artist-inresidence. As part of a collaborative project between the University and music licenser and royalty collector APRA/AMCOS, Hart has been mentoring students through workshops and tutorials.

Bachelor of Commerce Head of Sustainability, HSBC Bank Middle East

She now brings her expertise in corporate social responsibility to HSBC Bank Middle East – one of the largest private organisations in the Middle East. “My degree at Macquarie gave me access to programs and extracurricular activities which are missing in many other universities. Initiatives such as the Global Leadership Program gave me an edge and allowed me to gain knowledge that could be carried across borders and used in the real world. Macquarie is producing successful graduates who are contributing to the global society.”

Bachelor of Arts Solo artist and member of Boy & Bear

A Macquarie contemporary music graduate, Hart is now a highprofile founding member of award-winning group Boy & Bear, and a solo artist in his own right. The band’s Macquarie links run deep. Hart met fellow band members Dave Hosking and Killian Gavin while they were studying music business together. “My experience at Macquarie has had a huge impact on my career.”

Mike Minehan

PhD Volunteer, Cambodian Mine Action Centre Stirred by the plight of its residents, in 2010 Mike Minehan packed up his home in Sydney and moved to Cambodia, a country ravaged by landmines. A former TV anchorman on A Current Affair in Australia, Minehan offered his assistance to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC). He now works at the centre full-time, shooting video stories, and accompanying experts into the field to destroy mines and explosives. He also pays the salary of a three-person explosive ordnance disposal team and provides financial support to landmine victims. “I see the changes in the lives of victims I help, and receive lists every month of the explosives I pay to have recovered and destroyed. The most rewarding part is seeing faces light up when I personally help victims.”

How much it will cost Commonwealth Supported Places At undergraduate level, higher education providers are able to offer domestic students a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) (previously known as a HECS place). • Students in a CSP make a contribution towards the cost of their education (known as the student contribution) while the Australian Government provides the remainder. • Access to Commonwealth assistance for higher education, which includes subsidised places and loans, is dependent on citizenship or residency status. International students are only able to study in an overseas fee-paying place and must pay overseas student fees. • There are government loan options for domestic students (who are Australian citizens) through the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). These students can access HECS-HELP loans, as long as they provide their Tax File Number. Please note that the student contribution rate as set by the Australian Government is subject to change. All current information is listed on the Macquarie University website. studyassist.gov.au

Other costs When estimating how much university study will cost, there are more than just course fees and general living expenses to consider. Other costs can include: • transport and parking • text books – the cost of which will vary depending on the subjects chosen • excursions/field trips The student contribution amounts for 2013 adjacent should be used as a guide only for fees in 2014.
