introduction to vocational studies What is Vocational Education and Training? Vocational Education and Training (VET) is education and training for work and is directly linked to the needs of business and industry. Providers of VET are registered by the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) and are regularly audited for service quality. This system enables providers to operate anywhere in Australia and to issue nationally recognised qualifications.

What is Competency Based Training? Competency Based Training (CBT) relates to the demonstration of skills, knowledge, attitude and application required for effective performance in the workplace. Nationally agreed statements called Competency Standards are used to describe the skills and knowledge required for a person to operate effectively in the workplace. They contain descriptors of outcomes to be achieved (Elements) and criteria for performance (Performance Criteria). CBT allows for the required level of performance and expected mode of assessment to be made clear before the commencement of training, with the rate at which a learner will progress through the program determined by their demonstrated competence rather than by time spent engaged in study.

Learning and Assessment Assessment under the CBT system takes into account the participant’s knowledge and attitudes but requires actual performance of the competency as the primary source of evidence. To be deemed competent the learner must be able to perform a skill to a specified standard under specific conditions. Assessment methods incorporated at Carrick Institute of Education are: 1. Flexible – appropriate to a range of delivery modes, sites and learner needs 2. Valid – assess what they claim to assess 3. Reliable – consistent from learner to learner and context to context 4. Fair – do not disadvantage any individuals or groups of learners.

Assessment methods are usually determined via a combination of methods, which can involve any of the following: • Written assessments • Class participation • Discussions • Project work • Oral presentations • One-on-one examinations • Teacher observations • Debates • Role plays • Performing practical tasks • Workplace environment observation Unlike the traditional education system, CBT adopts an assessment process that is continual. Assessments can take place before, during and after training to give the teacher the opportunity to assess all aspects of competence across a range of situations and over a period of time.

Mode of Study Teaching and learning rely on two way communication, and students are encouraged to discuss and actively participate in learning. All programs provided by Carrick Institute of Education are offered in a variety of interactive teaching methods to accommodate a range of learning styles. Students are required to attend all classes with prescribed textbooks, correct uniforms (if applicable) and all necessary equipment to ensure that they are able to meet course competencies. Some of the different teaching methods used in Carrick Institute of Education’s programs consist of: • tutorial group discussions • lectures • group work (working with other students in a team environment) • audio or visual presentations • self-directed learning through research • problem solving and problem-based learning methods within a ‘real workplace’ setting • web-based/online activities (e-learning)

Jobs and careers Carrick Jobs and Careers (CJC) is a division of Carrick. CJC offers services to students, graduates and associated industry clientele. Carrick currently has more than 5000 students enrolled in a variety of courses covering a range of study areas. CJC proudly promotes dedicated and enthusiastic students to employers for a variety of staffing needs.

Student Success Story

Students have access to this free service, which is conveniently located at the main Carrick campus in each city. CJC offers exciting job opportunities and assistance in all areas of employment, such as:

Seang Nee Hong (Annie) | Malaysia Bachelor of Business (Hospitality & Tourism Management)

• pre-placement training • interview preparation • resumé development and analysis • work experience programs • liaison with key industry personnel • advice on personal development • voluntary work programs • overseas work experience and work placement • graduate positions • employment-based seminars.

While enrolled in the Bachelor of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Management), I was looking for an opportunity to gain experience in the hotel industry. I went to the Carrick Jobs and Careers team to seek assistance. The team helped me find an internship opportunity in the Sales and Marketing department within one of the five stars hotels in town, Sheraton on the Park. During my internship, I was able to utilize different marketing skills especially within online marketing. After completing my internship I also received a great reference from the director.

CJC services are available to all students undertaking vocational courses who wish to gain valuable work experience in their chosen industry while they study and graduates who have completed their studies. Australian residents also receive full-time employment assistance. International students on a student visa with work permission are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week.

Thank you CJC team for helping me land my first position in the hotel industry! I am currently working at Traders Hotel by Shangri-la in Malaysia as a Marketing Services Coordinator/Marketing Analyst.

Student Success Story Manpreet Singh | India English for Academic Purposes My name is Manpreet and I am from India. I’ve been in Melbourne for 2 months, studying English for Academic Purposes (EAP). I have an excellent teacher and great classmates from all over the world. Life was difficult for me when I first came to

Melbourne but with the help from the Carrick Jobs and Careers team I now work in a café and have learned a lot. My confidence and level of English are improving everyday thanks to Carrick.

Student Success Story Corinne Sammut | Australia dvanced Diploma of Hospitality A Management (Commercial Cookery) I started at Carrick in January 2008, studying the subject of an “Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management and Commercial Cookery”. Right away I started working with the great recruitment team at CJC. Together we worked on fixing my resume. We discussed what I want in a job and from that they got me started right away with a casual job with fresh catering, which I still work for when I am available, which was fantastic. While working at fresh catering and gaining experience CJC set me up for a trial at Doltone

House in Pyrmont, through which I was successfully given a job, as an apprentice chef, which I am enjoying. Thank you, and hopefully you too will seek guidance in the great Carrick recruitment team, to help you find a job.

Accommodation aND LIVING COSTS Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney Living Costs

Homestay

Students relocating to Australia should keep in mind the relevant costs when they undertake studies. When calculating the cost of living in Australia, students must also budget for food, health care, transport, books, clothing and entertainment. Please note that all costs listed are estimates only and will vary depending on location, lifestyle and inflation.

Carrick Education is proud to associate with the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) for the provision of homestay services for its students.

Students are recommended to allow a minimum of A$18,000 per year to cover their cost of living. It is highly recommended that students arrive with an additional A$2,000 to cover settling in costs such as rental bond and to purchase basic furniture items, if this is not already prepaid during enrolment.

Other costs • Overseas Student Health Cover* – A$354 (one year) • Rental bond – A$1,100 (Adel), A$1,100 (Bris), A$1,200 (Melb), A$1,800 (Syd) per rental • Music concert tickets – A$60 – A$100 • Cinema tickets – A$10 – A$18 • Mobile phone – A$50 per month • Stationery and books – A$500 per year

AHN is Australia’s leading Homestay provider and was recently commended in the Senate Inquiry into the Welfare and Safety of International Students for meeting the appropriate standards in Homestay accommodation. Homestay is a cultural exchange between a local individual or family (called a Host) and a visiting international student. The student lives as a guest in the home. In traditional homestay, students can expect to be provided with their own room, food and space to study. The homestay hosts will assist students to become familiar with the local area and customs in a relaxed and friendly household setting. This is the recommended option for all new students studying in Australia for the first time. Students are encouraged to share information about their home country and culture with their AHN homestay host. After the first 2-4 week minimum stay period there are numerous continuing AHN Homestay options to suit the various students needs. Please refer to the accompanying Homestay Chart for 2010. AHN Homestay helps students to better settle into life in a new country and gain the confidence to build important social networks in Australia.

* Australian Government Requirement – cost varies according to duration of cover. Prices include goods and services tax (GST). Costs are based on figures at time of printing and are subject to change without notice. From the 1st July, 2010 students will have to obtain OSHC for the proposed duration of their student visa.

Terms and conditions Please Visit Carrick’s Website to View All Current Carrick Policies: carrickeducation.edu.au/policies Carrick’s Policies are updated from time to time and perspective students are expected to visit Carrick’s website prior to lodging an application to study at Carrick. Attendance Policy for English Language Students Carrick English Language recognises the correlation between student attendance and successful achievement of the qualification studied. Hence, Carrick maintains a policy of 100% attendance for all class sessions and activities. Attendance is recorded on an hourly basis for all programs. Any class session or activity missed, regardless of cause, reduces the opportunity of learning and may adversely affect a student’s achievement in their enrolled course. Code of Conduct All students enrolled in and participating in programs or using the services of Carrick English Language, Carrick Institute of Education and Carrick Higher Education (Carrick) are expected to maintain appropriate standards of conduct at all times. Disciplinary Procedures Where behaviour is deemed to be inappropriate, Carrick will take appropriate action as outlined in the Student Disciplinary Policy. Fees & Charges It is understood that payment of tuition fees will not be accepted by Carrick until: a. A signed and dated Enrolment Agreement (outlining Student Terms and Conditions of enrolment, including International Student Refund Conditions) is received from the student, thereby agreeing to abide by all the conditions contained within the document; and b. All entry conditions stated in the Letter of Offer have been satisfactorily met. Course fees and additional charges are set out in Carrick’s Fees and Charges Policy. Where applicable additional fees are charged for items such as text books, uniforms, course equipment, excursions and a range of sundry fees as listed in the Fees and Charges Policy. Students required to undertake an out of class reassessment, repeat a unit or stage will be charged relevant fees as set out in SMP 3 Student Fees and Charges Policy.

International students are required under The National Code 2007 to complete their course within the duration specified on their Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) except in limited circumstances. In these circumstances a new COE will be issued to extend the duration of study The National Code 2007 The National Code 2007 requires International students to keep Carrick informed of their current address and must notify Carrick of any change in residential address within 7 days of the change. Provider Transfer The National Code 2007 restricts the capacity of students to transfer to another providers prior to completing six months of their principal course. A Carrick student may apply to transfer to another provider after they have completed six months of their principal course. If a student is enrolled in a package of courses, they must complete any prerequisite courses, and then the first six months of the principal course. See Transfer Request Assessment Policy AP40. Carrick will not knowingly enroll a student transferring from another education provider prior to the student completing six months of their principal course unless the original registered provider has provided a written letter of release. Refund Policy 1.0 Scope Carrick’s Refund Policy observes the principles outlined in the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act) and The National Code 2007 and applies to all new and re-enrolling students unless otherwise stated. 2.0 Definitions Institute Default occurs when: (a) the course does not begin on the agreed commencement date; or (b) the course ceases to be provided at any time after it commences but before it is completed; or (c) the course is not provided in full to a Student because a sanction has been imposed on the Institute. International Student – a student who is granted a visa to attend and study at an Australian education institution

Tuition fees for continuing students are due to be paid in full by the due date as set out in the student Enrolment Agreement. Failure to pay scheduled fees in full by the due date may result in the charging of a late fee, possible cancellation of enrolment and subsequent reporting to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

Package of Courses – where a Student is enrolled in a package of courses at the Institute.

Principle Course of Study

(b) a Student canceling their enrolment in a course (this includes an abandonment of the course before its completion);

If the student is on a package of courses, the course leading to the highest qualification will be the student’s principal course. Privacy Carrick is committed to protecting each individual’s right to privacy. Reasonable steps will be taken to protect all personal information from misuse and loss and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure, in line with the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000. Student Course Progress Carrick Institute of Education and Carrick Higher Education are required by The National Code of Practice 2007 for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2007 to monitor student course progress. Course progress is monitored regularly and student support is offered to students who are not progressing satisfactorily.
