OVERVIEW

Student support Orientation

Student Services Centre

Eynesbury offers a comprehensive orientation program for all new students at the beginning of each term. Students are provided with valuable information to help them settle into Eynesbury and perform at their best during their studies. Attendance at orientation is compulsory.

Eynesbury has a dedicated team of Student Services staff who will often be the first people students turn to when they have a question. The Student Services Centre at Coglin Street provides a range of advice, information and support services to students throughout their studies at Eynesbury.

During orientation students will:

Study and learning support

• meet staff and current students • get to know new classmates • receive student ID card • tour the campus facilities

Studying away from home can sometimes be difficult, and Eynesbury provides a supportive learning environment to help students with their studies.

Personal support Eynesbury has a free and confidential counselling service available to all students to discuss any problems or concerns relating to their academic, social or personal life. Seeing the Senior Counsellor is often a good place to start to resolve issues.

The student experience At Eynesbury, students can take full advantage of the opportunities the city has to offer. Eynesbury is committed to working with Study Adelaide — a South Australian Government initiative for international students studying in Adelaide. For more information visit: studyadelaide.com.

Events and activities The Student Experience Coordinator organises a broad range of activities for students both on and off campus including barbecues, bush walking and social activities that provide students with an opportunity to relax and meet others.

The Eynesbury Student Leadership Program and Forums Students participating in the Eynesbury Student Leadership Program develop leadership skills and confidence. Participants learn to facilitate student focus groups and forums and have the opportunity to become a mentor for other international students. Participants will assist in helping new students make the transition into their studies as smooth as possible.

Sports and clubs

Job search support and volunteering

There is a range of sporting and social clubs to join in Adelaide, which are a great way to develop a network of friends and become involved in the community.

Eynesbury holds regular job search and interview skills workshops to assist students in building a resume and finding part-time employment.

Eynesbury also supports students interested in volunteer work. Volunteering provides students with the opportunity to experience the Australian work place environment, meet new friends and contribute to the broader community.

Student assistance Students can keep up to date with events and activities by joining the Eynesbury Facebook page (facebook. com/eynesbury), viewing regular email information, checking the notice boards and meeting with the Eynesbury Student Experience Coordinator on campus.

PROGRAMS

Intensive General English

Pearson Versant Test (PVT)

Students can begin General English studies at the start of any teaching week throughout the year except during designated holiday breaks.

Students who have not met their English entry requirements via IELTS or TOEFL for direct entry into an Eynesbury program can take the Pearson Versant Test. This free online test is used to determine your level of English, and takes approximately 50 minutes to complete. Students, who sit the PVT and successfully achieve a score that meets English entry requirements, will gain direct entry into their program.

Students with an IELTS of 4.5 or below may commence in an Intensive General English Language program prior to commencement of an EAP program. Students who intend to commence an EAP program after IGE are encouraged to apply for commencement on the 2013 dates noted in this brochure.

Timetable ECAE operates morning and afternoon classes from Monday to Friday. Classes run from either 8.45am to 1.00pm or 1.00pm to 5.15pm. Students have a 15-minute break at approximately 10.00am and 3.00pm. There are 20 hours of scheduled classes per week.

Students who sit the PVT and do not meet the English entry requirements for their program, can be packaged to complete Eynesbury EAP language study for the assessed number of weeks required to meet the entry requirements for Eynesbury.

Students who are applying off shore may be able to sit the PVT in their respective country and, at the time of enquiry, Eynesbury Admissions will provide contact details for nearby Test Centres. To sit the test, the student must submit their Eynesbury Application for Admission, if they haven’t done so already.

Pearson’s Testing Centre Eynesbury operates the Adelaide Pearson’s Testing Centre at the Coglin Street campus (16–20 Coglin Street, Adelaide). The Pearson’s Test of Academic English (PTE) is offered on numerous dates throughout the year. To register for the PTE, please visit pearsonpte.com.

Eynesbury’s dedicated accommodation staff can advise and help students arrange suitable accommodation. The Accommodation Office can arrange homestay, student residence and temporary accommodation and provide advice on other options, including renting apartments or houses. Students under 18 years of age Students under the age of 18 must stay in homestay accommodation unless they are living with a parent or a guardian who is approved by the Australian Government. Full details are available from the Eynesbury Accommodation Office.

Homestay Homestay allows students to live with an Australian family. As members of a host family, students will be introduced to Australian culture and have the chance to practice their English language skills in everyday situations. Most host families are located less than 30 minutes by public transport from Eynesbury. Homestays are also a good short-term accommodation option for older students while they are looking for an apartment or house to rent. In a homestay students can expect: • a warm, caring family environment • a bedroom with a bed, a wardrobe and a desk for studying • bathroom and laundry facilities • towels, pillows, bed linen and blankets • nutritious meals • negotiated use of the kitchen, telephone and internet • guidance, support and encouragement with English language, studies, planning social activities and adapting to life in Australia • public transport information and assistance Some homestays provide all of the above, except meals. Students in these homestays are expected to buy and prepare their own meals using the homestay kitchen facilities. The cost of full-board homestay starts from A$230 per week, and may include breakfast and dinner from Monday to Friday and all meals on weekends and holidays.

Student residences offer: • private bedrooms • shared bathrooms • full kitchen facilities • barbecue areas • common rooms • indoor and outdoor recreation facilities • coin-operated laundry machines • communal TV rooms with DVD players

The cost of part board homestay starts from A$140 per week.

Fees vary from A$125–$150 per week for part board (meals not included) to A$245 per week for full board (three meals per day).

For further information about homestays and fees, visit eynesbury.navitas.com.

Student apartments

Homeaway Residence Accommodation for overseas students under 18 years of age. Eynesbury, in partnership with Homeaway, now has a purpose built environmentally friendly student residence available to students who are under 18 years of age and are studying a program with Eynesbury. Homeaway aims to provide a ‘home away from home’ for international students just three kilometres from the city centre of Adelaide. The Homeaway location is based within close proximity of all major bus and tram transport services, a variety of food outlets, shopping centres, travel agents and medical centres. Accommodating up to 32 students in single rooms, Homeaway is designed primarily for students who are here to complete their final years of schooling. Homeaway offers fully catered accommodation where meals and a weekly room clean (optional) is incorporated in a single fee. Full details are available from the Eynesbury Accommodation Office.

International student residences Student residences provide excellent living facilities in an environment ideal for studying. Usually, students have to sign a lease for a minimum stay of six months although some student residences only ask for a minimum stay of seven weeks. Full board (including all meals) and part board (meals not included) options are both available.

Many student apartments are situated in the city centre, close to Eynesbury. These apartments are usually fully furnished and are only rented to students, normally for a minimum term of 12 months. Apartments offer between one and six bedrooms and generally include a kitchen, bathroom, air conditioning, living/study area and heating. Single, twin and double accommodation is often available. Student apartments vary in cost from approximately A$200 to A$300 per week. Extra charges may apply for electricity, gas, internet access, telephone connection and laundry facilities.

Private rental accommodation Private rental accommodation, usually for 6–12 months, can be organised following arrival in Adelaide. Full details are available from the Eynesbury Accommodation Office.

Temporary accommodation Temporary accommodation is available in shared dormitories, hostels or hotels. Eynesbury can assist the parents of the students in finding short-term accommodation when they come to visit in Adelaide. Costs depend on the type and quality of the accommodation.
