Melbourne CBD All postgraduate law courses are taught at the Monash University Law Chamber, located in the heart of the city’s legal precinct at 555 Lonsdale Street within walking distance of the Magistrates, County and Supreme Courts. The Law Chamber provides independent student study areas and amenities conducive to creative and independent learning.

Parkville

Drive time: 3 km, approx. 10 minutes Located three kilometres north of Melbourne’s city centre, the Parkville campus houses the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, with first-class teaching facilities, innovative learning spaces and research laboratories. The campus is home to the Centre for Medication Use and Safety and the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which comprises the largest and most experienced group of pharmaceutical scientists in Australia.

Caulfield Drive time: 9 km, approx. 20 minutes 20km

Berwick

Caulfield is the second-largest Monash campus, with about 13,000 students. It’s the main centre for the faculties of Business and Economics, Art Design & Architecture, and Information Technology. Caulfield is nine kilometres from the Melbourne city centre and adjacent to Caulfield train station. The campus has a gym, library and cafes, and is close to several shopping precincts.

Clayton Peninsula

Drive time: 20 km, approx. 25 minutes Clayton is the largest of Monash’s campuses. It combines a vibrant research, technology and manufacturing precinct with first-rate sporting facilities, shops, a student centre, libraries, a post office, banks, medical services and religious centres. The campus can be reached by public transport utilising an extensive bus network combined with train stations in surrounding suburbs.

The Monash Warwick Alliance In 2012, Monash partnered with the University of Warwick (UK) to form a unique global alliance. This partnership raises our international profile and provides unparalleled access to new opportunities and benefits to our students. The Alliance aims to deliver a seamless international experience for students, offering innovative academic programs as well as opportunities for real and virtual student exchanges. We offer a joint PhD program in which both institutions are the ‘home’ institution, as well as joint and dual master’s programs that combine the distinctive strengths of each university.

Drive time: 40 km, approx. 40 minutes Berwick is a small, friendly campus with about 2000 students approximately 40 minutes south-east of Melbourne. It’s a five-minute walk from the heart of Berwick’s specialty shops, cafes and business services. Berwick campus is a centre for the Faculty of Education.

Peninsula Drive time: 40 km, approx. 40 minutes The Peninsula campus is about 40 minutes south of Melbourne. It is a centre for nursing and paramedic training, early years education, primary education and health and physical education, and is also being developed as a centre for health science research. There is a bus connection to Frankston train station, and a free shuttle bus runs between Peninsula and Clayton campuses. All times and distances are approximate and use the most direct driving route from the Melbourne CBD.

Nam is the chief operating officer at MobiVi, Vietnam’s leading electronic payment service provider.

As managing director of Singapore-based consulting firm Business Breakthrough Technology Pte Ltd Rameshwari manages the operations and expansion of consulting initiatives and blue-chip clientele in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines.

He helped co-found the company in mid2007, and it has grown quickly on the back of massive growth in the reach and popularity of the internet and mobile phones, and business uptake of electronic communications. MobiVi is at the forefront of e-commerce with their e-wallet payment system. E-wallet uses highly-secure computer networks and programs enabling airline tickets to be bought online, peer-to-peer payments undertaken via a mobile phone or over the web, and bills paid with the touch of a button.

She is passionate about the role of women in decision-making and is involved with organisations including the Development of Economy for Women, DEW Credit Co-operative Ltd, Singapore National Co-operative Federation, Netball Singapore and the Singapore Council of Women’s Organizations.

Our research

Michelle leads a team at Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences working on a project to develop an aerosol delivery system for oxytocin that can be inhaled by patients from a simple, disposable device immediately after childbirth. Every year more than 100,000 women die of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), a condition of excessive blood loss after childbirth. Although PPH can be effectively prevented or treated with an injection of oxytocin, access to this drug is limited due to the requirements for refrigeration, storage and trained medical personnel for administration.

Our research tradition Even before we became the global university we are today, our researchers looked beyond traditional boundaries, creating new frontiers and discovering new ways of approaching the fields in which they worked. That’s why a Monash education is respected around the world. Things that we now take for granted would not exist without the initial work of Monash researchers:

First in-vitro fertilisation pregnancy Professors Alan Trounson and Carl Wood achieved the world’s first IVF pregnancy in 1973. The Trounson and Wood team went on to achieve Australia’s first (and the world’s fourth) successful IVF birth in 1980.

Fighting influenza In 1986, a team from our Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (formerly the Victorian College of Pharmacy) designed and synthesised the anti-flu drug, Relenza. Relenza first became available in Australia in 1999 and is now used globally.

Nobel Peace Prize In 2007, eight scientists from Monash University shared in the prestige of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, awarded jointly to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and former US VicePresident Al Gore. We judge our research by its academic excellence, but also by the impact it has on the communities we engage with and serve. Super sand acts as an inexpensive filtration device in third-world countries.

Brendan is the Executive Principal of Parkville College – a Victorian Government School established to provide quality education for all young people detained in custody.

Dr Anwar is currently Research Professor at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Chairman of the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights – The Habibie Center and Deputy Secretary for Political Affairs to the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia. She has long been active in promoting equal opportunities for women in Indonesia and greater representation for women in government and politics, and was voted one of Indonesia’s most powerful women in 2007.

Deeply embedded in his community, Brendan is also the co-founder and former principal of the Pavilion School – a Victorian Government school that seeks to provide the highest standard of public education for adolescents who are disengaged from education. He was awarded the Victorian Outstanding Secondary Teacher Award in 2009 as well as the inaugural Australian Federal Government Closing the Gap Award. Having completed his Master of Education in 2010, Brendan now intends to pursue a PhD at Monash University.

Our research today Today, our ambition and optimism are stronger than ever. We have a clear vision of what we want our research to achieve and how we’ll help our researchers make it happen. Although we conduct research across more than 150 fields of study, we focus on a number of specialisations. We call these our leading capabilities. Building stronger, lighter planes Professor Xinhua Wu and her team at the Monash Centre for Additive Manufacturing (MCAM) are creating a new aluminium alloy that will make aircraft 30 to 40 per cent lighter, twice as fuel efficient and still structurally sound. So significant is this project that they are working in close partnership with Microturbo, the European Space Agency and Bombardier.

Helping the blind to see

Eliminating disease

The Monash Vision Group (MVG), draws on the capabilities of Monash University, The Alfred hospital and industry partners MiniFAB and Grey Innovation to develop bionic eye technology that connects to the primary visual cortex.

The Eliminate Dengue Program, led by Monash University’s Professor Scott O’Neill, uses a naturally occurring bacteria (Wolbachia) to reduce the ability of mosquitoes to pass dengue between people. Dengue fever affects an estimated 390 million people worldwide annually and is ranked by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the most important mosquitoborne viral disease in the world.

This means that patients unable to make use of current retinal implants because of damaged optic nerves or physical trauma to the actual eyes may now have the opportunity to see again.

Super sand Monash has teamed up with Rice University (USA) to create a ‘super sand’, which acts as an inexpensive filtration device in third-world countries. They have significantly enhanced the natural filtering properties of sand by coating it with a nanomaterial called graphite oxide (GO). Lack of clean drinking water is the cause of more than 2.5 million deaths per year according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Combined degrees offer you the flexibility to complete part of your course by following a subject-based program, and part of it by completing a research thesis. It will allow you to grow through experiencing two very different methods of higher education.

1. Professional entry postgraduate courses These courses are specifically designed to train students to enter regulated professions such as law, accounting and teaching after they have completed an undergraduate degree. These programs can range from two to four years depending on the discipline.

Expert master’s These programs allow you to either extend knowledge and expertise gained though your undergraduate degree or add breadth to your knowledge and skills in a new discipline.

Length of programs Many of our master’s programs offer block credit to students on the basis of their education background. 2-year programs – if a student wishes to undertake a master’s program in a different discipline to their three-year undergraduate qualification it will usually take two years (96 credit points).

2. Research options

1.5-year programs – if a student wishes to undertake a master’s program in the same discipline as their three-year undergraduate qualification it will usually be a 1.5 year program (72 credit points)

Monash offers research-based postgraduate degrees in all disciplines. And, while the challenge takes commitment, drive, motivation and talent, the benefits are enormous.

1-year programs – if a student wishes to study a master’s in the same discipline for which they have a four-year honours qualification it usually takes one year (48 credit points).

Fees Most postgraduate coursework programs are offered as full-fee places. Students in these courses pay the full tuition cost of the course and must make the payment upfront each semester. Details of course fees are included with course descriptions in this guide. A different fee is charged to Domestic and International students. Fees quoted are for courses commencing in 2014, are subject to change and are indicative only. Fees for courses commencing in 2015 will be different. The Master of Counselling is a skill-based course suited to professional people with an interest in counselling. Master of International Health

Clinical epidemiology attempts to answer questions relevant to the daily practice of medicine and other health sciences and to improve patient care. Step 4: We send you an Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE) and enrolment package

Use the Monash Course Finder to check: ■■ the international entry requirements ■■ extra documentation required, for example, details of relevant work experience ■■ fees ■■ closing dates ■■ when courses start.

An eCOE will be emailed to you or your Monash registered agent when you accept your full ISCA or packaged ISCA (with no academic conditions specified) and we have undertaken the necessary student genuineness checks as required by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). You will need the eCOE to apply for a student visa.

Applying for postgraduate degrees by coursework When should I apply? Apply as early as possible. Some courses have application closing dates two to four months prior to the start of the course, while others have quotas. Aim to have your application received by International Recruitment at least two to four months prior to the course start date. This allows time for your application to be processed and can help to ensure that you secure a place if your preferred course has limited places. Applying early also gives you time to get your student visas, which can take up to six months for some nationalities and countries.

Step 2: Your application is assessed When your application is received, Monash University will assess your application according to university entry requirements. If your application is successful, you will receive a conditional or full International Student Course Agreement (ISCA) via email.

Step 3: Accept your offer To accept your offer, follow the instructions in your ISCA. You must complete, sign and return Part B of your ISCA along with payment and a photocopy of the personal details page of your passport before the offer lapse date.

Step 8: Start your studies On arrival at Monash University, you will be assisted through the process of enrolment. There will be an orientation program to help you familiarise yourself with the university and your new surroundings.

When should I apply? Research degree-only applications may be submitted at any time of the year, but restrictions may apply to your course commencement date if you must complete any coursework as part of the degree. Applications for the university’s two research scholarships rounds close on 31 October and 31 May each year. Scholarship applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application approximately six to eight weeks after the closing date.

Step 1: Check your eligibility Once you know the degree you are interested in, check your eligibility for the course and a scholarship. Refer to monash.edu/migr/apply/ eligibility Our scholarship rounds are very competitive. Most scholarships require the equivalent of a first-class honours degree from Monash University. You’re assessed for all scholarships and grants for which you are eligible when you apply.

Step 2: Find a supervisor and submit a research proposal Research degree applications may only be submitted once you have obtained an invitation to apply from the faculty at which you will be enrolled. In order to obtain an invitation you will need to, ■■ complete an expression of interest and/or ■■ find a supervisor who agrees to supervise your research. It may take you up to four weeks to obtain an invitation. You should initiate the process to obtain an invitation not less than four weeks prior to the date on which you expect to submit your application. Scholarship applicants are required to initiate this process no later than 30 April and 30 September for the mid-year and end of year rounds respectively. Different faculties have different processes, so it is important that you read and follow the instructions that each faculty provides. English language requirements English language requirements for coursework degrees All students who apply for a Monash University course must satisfy English entry requirements. Different English entry levels apply to Monash courses. If a student has completed several measures of English proficiency over a period of time, only the most recent demonstration of English is considered. Certifier must write a statement acknowledging or apply a stamp that shows they have sighted the original documents using words such as “certified true copy of the original” OR “original sighted”.
