Teacher Assessment of the Learner We use a variety of assessment techniques to gauge student progress at BROWNS. Assessing students is done both formally, using paper-based tests and speaking interviews, and informally, from classroom participation, performance and homework tasks. As all of our teachers meet the NEAS teaching accreditation standards, we trust them to measure student progress and provide feedback to the students on areas of strength and areas for improvement. Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training It is mandatory for students who want to work at a licensed premise in any job serving, supplying or selling alcohol to have completed Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training either before employment or within 30 days of commencing work. At BROWNS, students can take the course SITHFAB201 – Provide responsible service of alcohol at any of our campuses monthly at a set cost. The course is delivered by an accredited vocational trainer. Students who have completed RSA training are aware of legal obligations and the ramifications associated with the sale of alcohol which helps employers comply with legislation and helps provide a safe and enjoyable venue for customers. Each student who successfully completes RSA training at BROWNS receives a Statement of Attainment as evidence they have completed the unit of competency. A statement of attainment does not expire.

The Barista@BROWNS course has been developed to better meet the needs of students who want to increase their chances of employment and improve their intercultural competence and English Language skills.
Students must demonstrate a minimum of B1 (Pre-Intermediate) level of English language ability.
5 weeks (refer to start dates on enrolment form) 30 contact hours per week 20 hours per week of English language skills and knowledge development in four key areas: – Context-specific vocabulary – Oral and written communication skills – Interpersonal skills – Intercultural skills 10 hours per week training from qualified and experienced VET trainers for two units of competency from the Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Training Package – SITXFSA101 – Use hygienic practice for food safety – SITHFAB204 – Prepare and serve espresso coffee Material Students will be provided with material designed in-house and taken from a range of external sources. I’ve never worked in a café/restaurant/ etc. before. Can/should I do this course? Yes, definitely. You don’t need any experience in a café or restaurant or in the hospitality industry. I don’t want to become a Barista in the future but I’m interested in the course. Will this course be useful for me? The course is challenging and engaging so you will learn a lot of vocabulary and do lots of speaking and listening practice. However, you should have at least some interest in coffee!

The course also includes project-based learning through our BROWNS Business Challenge. The majority of learners would be intending to: (i) secure employment in Australia or their home country; and/or (ii) participate in further study at tertiary levels in Australia or their home country. How to enrol@BROWNS To enjoy your first class BROWNS experience there are a few things you need to have ready. This handy check list will help prepare you for your time at BROWNS.
