Postgame Policies Ace Hunt and Bonnie Ryan will coordinate all postgame interviews for the Sycamores, as the locker room is closed to media. On the road, Coach Miles and selected players will be made available after a brief cooling off period in an area outside the locker room or a space designated by the host school.

At home, both team’s head coaches as well selected players will be made available in the interview area located inside the Memorial Stadium Fieldhouse.

The Indiana State Head Coach Indiana State is led by head coach Trent Miles, a 1987 ISU graduate and Terre Haute native. Miles made his head coaching debut last season against Eastern Michigan and carries a record of 0-17 into Saturday’s game. Miles previously spent three seasons (2005-07) as the running backs coach at Washington and three years at Notre Dame (2002-04) as the wide receivers coach. Miles is 0-1 against the Panthers, and is 0-10 against members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

The Northern Iowa Head Coach Northern Iowa is led by head coach Mark Farley, who is in his ninth season at the helm of the Panther program. Farley is 78-29 as a collegiate head coach, third on the UNI all-time coaching victories list. Farley is 7-1 all-time against Indiana State, including a mark of 4-0 in the UNI-Dome.

Scouting Northern Iowa Northern Iowa is a member of the NCAA FCS Subdivision and competes in the MVFC. The Panthers are 3-1 on the season, having won three in a row, including last week’s MVFC opener against Missouri State. UNI opened the year with a narrow 17-16 defeat at the hands of nationally-ranked Iowa.The Panthers had a pair of field goals blocked in the game’s final seconds which allowed the Hawkeyes to barely escape with a season opening victory. UNI is led by Derrick Law, who amassed 223 yards rushing, while quarterback Pat Grace is 74-of-111 passing for 1,084 yards and nine touchdowns.

A Little History This marks the 105th season of football at Indiana State, dating back to 1896. The University did not field teams from 1899 to 1900, 1908 or from 1910 to 1919. ISU owns an all-time record of 338-460-22 and is competing for the 24th consecutive season as a member of the MVFC. What’s Transpired Indiana State opened the season with a 26-20 overtime loss against Quincy at Memorial Stadium. The game drew regional attention, as 7,216 fans were in attendance. The Sycamores bounced out to a quick 17-0 lead in the first quarter against the Hawks – ISU’s largest lead over an opponent since 2004 -- but Quincy came back to knot the score at 20 with 43 seconds left in regulation. Darrius Gates paced the Sycamores with 102 yards on the ground and also threw a 75-yard touchdown pass as the offense showed spark early in the game.

ISU enjoyed its closest game against a member of the NCAA Division I FBS Subdivision since 2003 with a 3010 loss at Louisville. Santino Davis recorded a pair of interceptions in falling to the BIG EAST opponent.

The Sycamores were shut out in their third contest of the season against Eastern Illinois by a 31-0 count. It marked the first time ISU was shut out by the Panthers since 1962 and their 95 yards of total offense was the Sycamores’ lowest total since the 2003 campaign.

Indiana State battled tough at No. 18 South Dakota State in the first half, but it wasn’t enough, as the Jackrabbits took it to the Sycamores late in the second quarter en route to a 41-0 win over ISU. ISU trailed just 3-0 in the waning moments of the first half, but a blocked punt and a touchdown with less than a minute remaining helped SDSU to the game’s momentum and the eventual victory. Senior Donye McCleskey recorded a season-best 15 tackles in defeat, plus his first interception of the season. ISU was shutout in back-to-back games for the first time since the 1999 season.

The Sycamores were shutout for the third consecutive game, falling 28-0 to Youngstown State. The Penguins owned just a 7-0 lead in the fourth quarter as the Sycamores held YSU without a score for nine consecutive possessions and did not allow a first down to Youngstown in third stanza. Indiana State went over the 100-yard mark in total offense, but were not able to reach pay dirt, falling to 0-2 in league play.

DEFENSE...DEFENSE The Sycamore defense held Youngstown State to just seven points into the fourth quarter, continuing to improve as the season progresses. In fact, the defense did not surrender a first down in the entire third quarter against the Penguins. The Sycamores forced YSU into nine consecutive drives without surrendering a score, spanning from the 5:37 mark of the first quarter until the 10:03 mark of the fourth.

An Indiana State Win Over Northern Iowa Would...

• Snap the Sycamores’ 31-game losing streak, dating back to a 28-22 Homecoming victory over MVFC rival Missouri State in 2006.

• Give Trent Miles his first collegiate head coaching victory.

• Snap a six-game losing streak to the Panthers and give Indiana State its first victory in Cedar Falls since a 24-6 triumph in 1988.

• Snap Indiana State’s 19-game losing streak in Missouri Valley Football contests.

• Give Indiana State its first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent since 1999, a victory over No. 18 Western Illinois, and would be the highest-ranked opponent to ever be defeated by an ISU football team.

Special Teams a Strength Senior punter Gabe Mullane was extremely busy against Youngstown State, averaging 37.5 yards per kick on 10 attempts against the Penguins. Mullane’s longest boot on the busy day was 54 yards, and he pinned YSU inside its own 20-yard line once and only had one touchback in the 10 attempts. His 10 punts were just two shy of the school record of 12. For the season he has punted 35 times and has pinned the opposition deep in their own territory (inside the 20) a total of eight times, or 22.8 percent of his attempts.

Return To Sender Indiana State has been solid in special teams, as the punt return squad ranks 28th nationally with an 10.78 yards-per-return average. That mark is good enough for third in the MVFC. Bryant Kent leads ISU in punt returns with a 6.57 average, which is fourth in the MVFC and tied for 38th nationally. Individually, Darrius Gates is averaging 31.33 yards per kickoff return which is second in the league and eighth-best nationally.

As a team, the Sycamores average 21.05 yards per kick return, which is 49th nationally and in a league which boasts some of the best special teams in all of the FCS Subdivision, is seventh in the MVFC. Facing The Best The Sycamores face top five nationally-ranked Northern Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 3. ISU looks to down its first opponent in the Top 25 since downing No. 19 Western Illinois on Oct. 23, 1999. The Sycamores are 8-67 all-time against FCS nationally-ranked opponents, including a mark of 6-48 against league members that are nationally ranked.

We Are Mostly...Young Of the 84 players on the current Indiana State roster, a total of 65 student-athletes are underclassmen -- or just over 76 percent. There are 38 true or redshirt freshmen on the roster currently. A total of 19 studentathletes have seen their first collegiate action this season, including 18 true or redshirt freshmen.

Few Seniors Indiana State has just 11 players on its roster who are seniors. Of those, Mike Woods and Elliott Thomas are fifth-year seniors, while Donye McCleskey, Jeramie Gray, Jerry Calvert, Dan Millington, Pat Burke, Bill McGrath and Nate Brown are in their fourth year. Antoine Brown and Gabe Mullane transferred into the Sycamore program and are in their final season as well. Indiana State has the fourth fewest seniors on a 2009 roster nationally.

Working Overtime The Sycamores have played in 11 overtime contests since the rule was established for regular season games in the NCAA FCS Subdivision in 1996. The Sycamores are 6-5 in games that have used an extra period, including a 33-30 overtime win over Eastern Illinois in 2004.

Sycamores vs. the Missouri Valley Football Conference Indiana State is in its 24th season as a member of the MVFC. ISU’s first season as a league member came in 1986 when it went 1-5 through a six-game league schedule. The Sycamores are 39-108 in MVFC contests and have lost each of their last 19 league matchups. ISU’s last victory over a member of the league came on Oct. 21, 2006 against Missouri State (28-22). The Sycamores’ last road victory over a MVFC opponent came on Nov. 9, 2002 at Southern Illinois, a 21-14 ISU victory.

Flood Gates Open Junior tailback Darrius Gates opened the season against Quincy by rushing for a team-best 102 yards on 11 carries. He closed out the 2008 campaign against Missouri State by rushing for 237 yards on 29 attempts en route to being named the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week. His performance in the season finale of 2008 against the Bears coupled with the effort versus the Hawks, makes Gates the first Sycamore to record back-to-back 100-yard single-game rushing performances since Jake Shields accomplished the feat in the first two games of 2003 (127 at Ball State; 213 vs. Florida International). To add to his success on the ground, Gates also completed a 75-yard TD pass to Bryant Kent in the first quarter against Quincy, which was the second pass completion of his career (both have gone for touchdowns).

The Last Time They Met: Nov. 15, 2008 The Indiana State football team returned home after playing it last two games on the road, but had to face off against the No. 4 ranked team in the country in Northern Iowa. The game was forced to the ground due to rain and heavy winds, and the Panthers (9-2, 7-1 MVFC) took advantage by amassing 238 rushing on way to a 28-0 win over the Sycamores (0-11, 0-7 MVFC) at Memorial Stadium.

The Sycamore defense had the measure of the fourth-ranked Panthers throughout much of the opening quarter, stopping UNI on its first two possessions. Defensive tackle Rod Hardy came up with a big stop on a fourth-and-inches play that denied the Panthers a first down on UNI’s first possession and the ISU defense forced a Panther punt on UNI’s second possession of the game.

However, the Sycamore offense could not take advantage as the Panther defense force two-straight three-and-out possession to start the game.

Northern Iowa jumped out to a 7-0 lead just before the end of the first quarter by taking advantage of a short punt by ISU’s Gabe Mullane against a stiff west wind. Josh Collins returned the punt to the ISU 27, and it took the Panthers just five plays to go on a 27-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a three-yard touchdown run by Derek Law with 34 seconds remaining.

The Panthers added two more scores in the second quarter to widen the lead to 21-0 halftime. Corey Lewis capped a 46-yard, five-play scoring drive with a three yard run with 5:48 remaining to make the score 14-0 in favor of UNI. Lewis later scored on a 21-yard pass from Zach Davis that completed a three play, 60-yard drive with a minute left in the half that was aided by a pass interference call against the Sycamores.

In the third quarter, UNI’s Jamar Thompson intercepted a pass by ISU’s Ryan Roberts at the ISU 32 yard line and returned the ball to the ISU 21. The Panthers got as close as the ISU three yard line, but the ISU defense stiffened and forced the Panthers to attempt a 21-yard field goal into the win. UNI placekicker Billy Hallgren set up to attempt the field goal, but a bad snap from center gave Indiana State the ball back at their own 14 yard line with 1:50 remaining in the third quarter.

The score stayed that way until the fourth quarter, when the Panthers put the game away at 28-0. On the team’s first possession of quarter, UNI drove 55 yards in just three plays for its fourth touchdown of the game. A 52-yard pass from Pat Grace to Jarred Herring set up the Panthers at the ISU one-yard line after a touchdown-saving tackle by ISU freshman Julian Easterly. Lewis then scored his third touchdown of the day on the next play on a one yard run with 10:05 left in the game. The score remained that way for the rest of the game and the Panthers secured at least a share of the MVFC title.

Roberts finished the day with 45 yards rushing on 17 carries and also completed 3-of-8 passes for 19 yards with an interception. Fullback Brock Lough had a solid day on the ground, as he rushed for 35 yards on six carries for an average of 5.8 yards per carry. The Sycamores were led on defense by Jerry Calvert, CJ Cook and Jayden Everett, who each recorded eight tackles on the day. Hardy finished his day with seven tackles and a half tackles for loss.

Trent Miles Head Coach

0-17 (2nd Year) Indiana State, 1987 Head coach Trent Miles enters his second year at the helm of the Indiana State football program in 2009. Miles was named the Sycamores’ 23rd head football coach on Dec. 4, 2007.

In his inaugural season on the job, Miles had three players earn All-Missouri Valley Conference honors as Jayden Everett, Donye McCleskey and Alex Sewall all took Honorable Mention plaudits. Additionally, Sewall, Larry Carter and Ryan Roberts took MVFC All-Newcomer status.

Everett recorded 102 total tackles on the season, which ranked in the nation’s top 20 and was in the top five in the MVFC. He also had a key forced fumble and recovery in the season finale against Missouri State that allowed Indiana State to comeback from down 14-0 to force overtime. Everett posted six games in which he recorded double digit tackles, including a season-high 18 stops on Homecoming versus South Dakota State.

McCleskey posted 98 total tackles last season, including 53 total stops. In the conference opener against Illinois State, McCleskey was credited with a career-high 17 total tackles. Known as a big-play defensive threat, McCleskey recovered a fumble and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown at Youngstown State. He had four games in which he recorded at least 10 tackles, including 13 against South Dakota State, 11 in the season finale versus Missouri State, 10 at Western Illinois and the season-best 17 versus the Redbirds.

Sewall was Indiana State’s top newcomer on defense with 90 total tackles, including 52 solo stops as he played in all 12 of the Sycamores’ contests this season. He notched a season-best nine tackles in five different contests: at Eastern Illinois, at Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, at North Dakota State and in the season finale versus Missouri State.

Carter played in 10 games in 2009 and recorded 34 total tackles, including one for a loss and was credited with one half of a sack. He broke up four passes this season and recovered one fumble at Southern Illinois. In the conference opener against Illinois State, Carter posted a team-high eight tackles.

Roberts played in all 12 games this year, including the final six as the Sycamore quarterback after playing the first six games on the defensive side of the ball. He completed 39-of-84 passes for 294 yards, including a long of 20 yards. Roberts was strong on the ground with 107 rushes for 194 yards, plus three rushing touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Roberts was credited with nine total tackles. He posted a season-high 59 rushing yards at Youngstown State and was 15-of-24 for 124 yards passing against South Dakota State.

Running a well-rounded program is an important concept for Miles, as evidenced by a trio of Sycamores being named to the MVFC All-Academic squad. Those Sycamores making the second team were tight end Josh Jones and punter Gabe Mullane, while offensive lineman Jack Byrne was an honorable mention selection.

Jones, who holds 3.92 GPA in Exercise Science, was the Sycamores’ top pass catching tight end as he hauled in 11 passes for 83 yards, an average of 7.5 yards per catch. Jones also was credited with one rush and a pair of kickoff returns during the season.

Mullane, who has earned a 3.93 GPA in Physical Education, punted 82 times on the year for a total of 2,948 yards. He averaged 36.0 yards per kick and recorded a long punt of 66 yards. Mullane only had two touchbacks in 82 punts and forced 10 fair catches. He was able to pin the opposition inside their own 20-yard line a total of 17 times and recorded six punts of 50 yards or more.

Byrne, who has a 3.15 GPA in Business, played and started in all 12 games for the Sycamores at the center position. The Sycamore offense gained 1,539 yards on the ground and reached the end zone eight times. Byrne was the leader of a team which also had 881 yards through the air and reached the end zone through the air three times.

The ISU Football team is also very involved in community service, including working tirelessly across the Wabash Valley in June of 2008 helping victims of the floods in the area. The football players at ISU also are committed to teaching young children how to read and visiting with local hospitals to help children that are ill.

Miles is a native of Terre Haute, Ind., and a 1987 graduate of Indiana State.

Miles was a wide receiver at Indiana State from 1982-86, where his 1983 and 1984 squads each won nine games and advanced to the NCAA FCS playoffs.

The 1984 Sycamores were ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season.

That team was inducted into the Indiana State University Hall of Fame on Sept. 7, 2002.

Prior to coming to Indiana State, Miles completed his third season as the Washington running backs coach in 2007 after having spent the previous three years on Tyrone Willingham’s staff at Notre Dame as the wide receivers coach.

In 2007, Husky running back Louis Rankin rushed for 1,294 yards, becoming the first Washington player to tally a 1,000-yard rushing season since 1997.

While at Notre Dame, he mentored future NFL standouts Maurice Stovall, Rhema McKnight and Arnaz Battle, as well as Jeff Samardzija, who is now playing professional baseball in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Prior to coaching at Notre Dame, Miles worked under Willingham for one year at Stanford. That season Miles had the opportunity to coach some of the nation’s finest receivers including Luke Powell (whose 22.3yard average per catch set a school record) and Teyo Johnson (the 2001 Pacific-10 Co-Freshman of the Year and a second-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2003).

Miles spent the 2000 campaign with the Green Bay Packers as an offensive assistant, working with the wide receivers and as a quality control coach. During his tenure with the Packers, he coached NFL all-pro receiver Antonio Freeman.

Miles has 20 years of coaching experience on the collegiate level. He was the wide receivers coach at Fresno State for three years (1997-99), producing some of the greatest receivers in Bulldogs’ history. In 1999, two of his receivers, Rodney Wright and Charles Smith, combined to produce more than 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns on 120 receptions.

Their production helped the Bulldogs to a share of the Western Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the Las Vegas Bowl. He also recruited and coached Bernard Barien of the Minnesota Vikings.

Throughout his career, Miles has coached on both sides of the ball including wide receivers, defensive backs and linebackers. Miles began his coaching career at Indiana State in 1987, tutoring the wide receivers and defensive backs as a graduate assistant. Another graduate assistant position followed at New Mexico (1988-89), where he worked with the receivers and linebackers. Miles then moved on to Oklahoma in 1990, working with the wide receivers as a graduate assistant.

Following four seasons as an assistant at Northern Illinois (1991-93 as receivers coach, 1994 with defensive backs), Miles headed west to Hawaii for two seasons (1995-96), where he spent a season each with the wide receivers and defensive backs.

Miles earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Indiana State in 1987. He was born July 29, 1963, in Terre Haute, Ind. Miles married the former Bridget Hogan on July 10, 2004. They have three daughters, Kaylee, Anna, and Charlie Elizabeth.

Game 1: Quincy Recap TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State fell to Quincy by the score of 26-20 in overtime on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams in front of 7,216 fans at Memorial Stadium.

The Sycamores opened the game with a barrage, taking a 17-0 lead out of the gate. ISU sophomore kicker Braulio Martinez hit a 40-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 7:44 left in the first quarter. Martinez’s kick capped a 10-play, 52-yard drive that took 4:59 off the clock.

The lead grew on a five-yard pass to sophomore Ryan Roberts from Stutzriem for a 10-0 advantage with 5:50 left in the opening stanza. The four-play, nine-yard scoring drive was set up by a Sam Donatucci fumble which was forced by Nate Brown and recovered by Aaron Archie.

Indiana State’s lead ballooned to 17-0 on the biggest play of the game when tailback Darrius Gates hit Bryant Kent on a 75-yard scoring strike with 1:01 left in the first period, a play which was a perfectly executed tailback pass.

The Sycamores’ 17-0 advantage was its largest since a 28-7 lead over Illinois State on October 2, 2004.

Quincy cut the Sycamore lead down to 17-3 with a 22-yard field goal by Alex Beard with 11:12 to go in the second quarter.

The lead went down to 17-6 on a 30-yard field goal by Beard with 10:12 to go in the third quarter, the period’s only score.

Game One

That set up a wild fourth quarter in which Tyler Truttmann caught a 12-yard pass from Donatucci and then Donatucci found Chris Jenkins in the end zone for the two-point conversion to make it 17-14 with 14:09 to go.

Donatucci knotted the score with 43 seconds left at 20 with a one-yard plunge into the end zone. Beard’s kick failed after Quincy was flagged for a false start and had to make its attempt from the eight-yard line instead of the three.

Indiana State was unable to score and even had to survive a last second attempt by Quincy as they gained possession with three seconds left on the clock.

Quincy won the toss to begin overtime and elected to play defense.

The Hawks held as the Sycamores lost the ball on a botched shotgun snap back to Stutzriem.

Quincy marched down to the one-yard line and the Sycamore defense held on first and goal, but on second and goal, Donatucci plunged in from a yard out to earn the 26-20 overtime victory.

Gates paced Indiana State with 102 yards on the ground while Stutzriem was 9-of-18 for 60 yards with an interception. Gates was the team’s leading passer with 75 yards in the air on the trick play in the first quarter.

Ryan Roberts caught a team-high three passes for 18 yards while Kent paced the team with his 75-yard scoring catch from Gates.

Defensively, Donye McCleskey and Aaron Archie each had 10 tackles on the night while Archie added a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery. Nate Brown paced ISU with three tackles for loss and forced a fumble.

Game 2: Louisville Recap LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Indiana State took a 7-3 first-quarter lead but was held to 101 yards on the night by the Louisville defense in a 30-10 loss at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium Saturday night. In front of 39,344 fans, the Sycamores dropped to 0-2 on the season, while UL improved to 1-0.

The Sycamore defense proved that Louisville wouldn’t be the only defensive force on the evening as Indiana State put the stops to the Cardinal offense as well in their season opener.

ISU defensive back Santino Davis highlighted the game for ISU by posting a pair of interceptions – the most over any FBS opponent in ISU history – including one that set up a touchdown drive that gave the Sycamores an early 7-3 lead. Davis’ two interceptions in one game are the fifth-best showing in school history, and is the best performance since John Allman against Illinois State on Oct. 27, 1979.

Louisville produced a balanced offensive attack in its season opener, as Victor Anderson rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Justin Burke had a 17-for-31 passing night for 223 yards, and Ryan Payne also kicked three field goals of 28, 21 and 31 yards, respectively.

For the Sycamores, Antoine Brown led the ground game with 14 yards on nine carries, and Darrius Gates produced eight yards on 10 tries. Larry Lacotti had three receptions for 26 yards, while Ryan Roberts totaled 24 yards on two receptions. Defensively, Aaron Archie had the most tackles of any player on either team with 9.5.

Louisville jumped on the board first with a field goal by Payne at 9:44 in the first quarter. The Sycamores responded with an interception by Davis just before the 6:00 mark, grabbing a Burke pass at the Louisville 33-yardline and returned it four yards to the UL 29. The pick set up a touchdown drive led by ISU quarterback Chris Stutzriem, who guided a seven-play, 29-yard drive. The sophomore faced a third-and-goal situation from the 3-yard-line before a short touchdown run – his first rushing TD of the season – with 1:30 remaining. Braulio Martinez added an extra-point kick to give ISU a 7-3 lead to finish the first quarter.

Travis Johnson entered the game in place of Stutzriem to begin the drive, tossing a 15-yard pass to Lacotti to take it to the UL 16 and later hitting Lacotti again for a five-yard completion at the 13 yardline. The drive allowed Martinez to kick a 30-yard field goal at 12:58 to chip the Cardinal lead to 27-10.

Game 3: Eastern Illinois Recap TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State fell by the score of 31-0 to Eastern Illinois in its final non-conference tilt of the 2009 campaign in front of 2,977 fans at Memorial Stadium.

Offensively, Indiana State was led in the passing by redshirt freshman Travis Johnson, who made his first career start. Johnson was 8-of-15 for 63 yards with an interception in the contest. Chris Stutzreim, who had started the first two contests, came on in relief and was 3-of-7 for eight yards.

On the ground, Antoine Brown paced the Sycamores for the first time this season with 10 rushes for 29 yards while Darrius Gates had six rushes for nine yards.

Brown also was solid out of the backfield for the Sycamores, hauling in four passes for 29 yards while Gates had a trio of catches for 12 yards.

Defensively, freshman Jacolby Washington made 10 tackles while Santino Davis had seven tackles, including a pair for losses.

Donye McCleksey and Austen Wozniak each had quarterback sacks while Rod Hardy and Nate Brown added tackles for loss.

Eastern Illinois recorded their first score of the game at the 9:30 mark in the first quarter when Chavar Watkins raced into the end zone from 20 yards out for a quick 7-0 lead. The Panther advantage ballooned to 14-0 just 18 seconds later on a 26-yard interception touchdown return of a Johnson pass with 9:12 left in the opening stanza.

Eastern Illinois added another score on a 54-yard touchdown run by Williams with 4:41 left to go in the opening half to make it 21-0.

The Panthers got an extra three points heading into halftime on a 31-yard field goal by Austin Signor as time expired. EIU got the ball back after a Johnson fumble with 26 seconds left on the clock and the Sycamores’ Daniel Millington sacked EIU quarterback Jake Christensen two plays later with the ball coming loose. Christensen was ruled down before the fumble so the Panthers retained possession and Signor kicked the field goal to send the teams into the locker room with the score 24-0.

Williams added a 30-yard touchdown run with 7:58 left in the third quarter to give EIU a 31-0 lead.

The Sycamore offense was limited to just 95 yards of total offense in the game, marking the first contest that Indiana State did not record at least 100 yards since a 45-10 loss on Nov. 1, 2003 at Missouri State.

Indiana State was shutout for the first time against Eastern Illinois since a 13-0 Panther victory in 1962.

Game 4: South Dakota State Recap Brookings, S.D. - Indiana State opened Missouri Valley Football Conference play Saturday night, falling 41-0 to South Dakota State in front of 13,945 fans at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Travis Johnson, making his second career start, had an 11-for-25 passing night for 65 yards and no interceptions. On the ground, Antoine Brown had 12 rushes for 13 yards, while Darrius Gates rushed seven times for 20 yards. Michael Mardis hauled in four receptions for 21 yards.

Defensively, Donye McCleskey led the way with 15 total tackles, and CJ Cook added 12.

For South Dakota State, quarterback Ryan Crawford completed 21 of 27 passes for 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Kyle Minett rushed 18 times for 95 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Through the first half, the defense led the way for the Sycamores. CJ Cook totaled seven tackles, while Donye McClesky had six. Aaron Archie and Nate Brown added five apiece for a team tally of 23.

The Jackrabbits tacked on another touchdown for a score of 34-0 on a three-yard pass from Crawford to Minett (kick Peter Reifenrath) with 7:59 remaining in the game. Their final points of the contest came with a touchdown with 34 seconds to go, as Jordan Paula rushed six yards to bring the tally to 41-0.

Indiana State was shutout for the second consecutive week, following a 31-0 defeat at the hands of Eastern Illinois in the Sycamores’ previous contest. It marks the first time that ISU has not scored in consecutive games since falling 33-0 to Iowa State & 49-0 to Oklahoma to kickoff the 1999 campaign. Additionally, ISU’s 90 yards of total offense are its fewest since gaining just 48 against Missouri State in 2003. The Sycamores were able to muster just 95 yards of offense last week against the Panthers.

Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 when it plays host to Youngstown State at 12:05 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

Game 5: Youngstown State Recap TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Sycamores fell 28-0 to Youngstown State in front of 3,557 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Sycamores were paced offensively by sophomore Ryan Roberts, who returned his role as the team’s quarterback versus the Penguins. Roberts, who started the campaign as a wide receiver, went under center and was 11-of-18 passing for 78 yards.

Darrius Gates led the charges offensively with 11 rushes for 51 yards. Roberts was solid on the ground as he compiled 14 rushes for 18 yards.

Leading the Sycamores in receiving was Larry Lacotti, who hauled in three catches for six yards. Bryant Kent had a pair of receptions for 22 yards, including a game-best 17-yard catch off the arms of Roberts. Gates had 18 yards on a pair of receptions during the game as well.

Senior punter Gabe Mullane had 10 punts, averaging 37.5 yards per kick, including a long of 54 yards.

Sophomore Koby Kraemer returned from a preseason foot injury to return foour kicks for 81 yards, including a long of 32 yards.

The Sycamores appeared to be ready to knot the game at seven midway through the second quarter when the Sycamroes took over at the YSU 31-yard line with 4:24 left before the half. A fumble inside the 20-yard line stymied ISU’s best chance to score in the contest. The Penguins took the ball down to the ISU 16-yard line, but Stephen Blose missed the first of two field goal attempts to keep the score at 7-0 heading into the locker room.

The score stayed a 7-0 until the 10:03 mark of the fourth quarter when Smith rushed to pay dirt for 21 yards out to make it 14-0.

Aaron Pitts caught a one-yard pass from Summers with just 4:39 on the clock to give the Penguins a 21-0 lead and YSU capped things off with a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown by Na-eem Outler with 3:45 left.

Indiana State has now been shutout for three consecutive games.

The last time the Sycamores went 12 quarters without a score came during the 1951 campaign.
