back to winning ways It had been a long time since CSU-Pueblo was a winner. For a team that hadn’t sniffed the playoffs since 2006 and hadn’t won a playoff game since 1999, a culture change was undertaken in 2011 by new coach and former ThunderWolf, Jen Gomez. The result was the ThunderWolves’ first winning season in five years as well as the biggest intangible of all – they learned how to win. In 2012, the time has come to not only win, but to dominate. Boasting one of the strongest incoming classes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as well as a solid group of experienced returners,

The time is now!

HEAD COACH

JEN GOMEZ

2nd SEASON • SOUTHERN COLORADO (‘01)

Colorado State University-Pueblo named former CSU-Pueblo assistant coach and volleyball player, Jen Gomez, head volleyball coach on December 22, 2010. In her first season coaching the Pack, she promptly led CSUPueblo to its first winning season and RMAC playoff berth since 2006 as the ThunderWolves turned in a 15-13 record. Gomez, formerly Jen Salmans, was an assistant coach with the ThunderWolves from 2000 to 2004 after playing for the Pack from 1998 to 1999. She been the head coach at Oklahoma City University since 2006 where she took over an OCU volleyball program that had been dormant from 1981 to 2005. Gomez immediately turned the Stars into a winner, going 26-8 and making an NAIA regional tournament appearance. Over her five seasons at the helm of OCU, Gomez was 134-60, leading the Stars to the 2010 Sooner Athletic Conference title and the school’s first ever NAIA Championships appearance. She has led the Stars to at least the NAIA regionals three of her five seasons at Oklahoma City, including four 20-win seasons and two 30-win seasons. She also coached the program’s first ever All-American, Xiaoting Ma, who was named All-American three times and earned first-team honors in 2010. Prior to being named head coach at Oklahoma City, she was the assistant volleyball coach at Angelo State (Tex.) University for two seasons, and was the assistant coach at CSU-Pueblo prior to that. In all, she has a total of 11 seasons of collegiate coaching experience. As a player at CSU-Pueblo, she was an All-RMAC selection, as well as the CSU-Pueblo (then-University of Southern Colorado) Female Athlete of the Year in 2000. Prior to CSU-Pueblo, she was an NJCAA All-American at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan.

BUILDING A WINNING TRADITION

To a casual observer, CSU-Pueblo’s 2011 volleyball season was ho-hum at best. It finished the season two games above .500 with a 15-13 record and was bounced from Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference playoffs after just one game. But to those who have followed the program for years, observed its ups and (mostly) downs, 2011 might as well have been an RMAC championship season. Under first-year head coach Jen Gomez, job one was reversing a culture of losing that had permeated for a decade. She had a group of seniors that had won just 24 games in three seasons and hadn’t really learned to win. With that group at the core, CSU-Pueblo was in first place in the RMAC West Division for most of the season, and may have been able to snag a few more wins if starting outside hitter and leading attacker Janae Heiser wasn’t lost for the season on a knee injury midway through the season. Gomez has the pedigree and a track record – already. Entering just her seventh season as a collegiate head coach, her

But that figure certainly comes with a caveat, as most of it was accomplished at NAIA Oklahoma City University. Additionally, her CSU-Pueblo coaching record of 15-13 (.536) also puts her second all-time in terms of career win percentage, only behind the iconic Jessie Banks at .710.

INDIVIDUAL single match records Volleyball Record Book Note: The format of the game changed in 2001, with scoring for the winning team in each game moving from 15 points (“side out scoring”) to 30 points (“rally scoring”), except in matches that go to the full five games, in which the winning score in the fifth game remains 15 points. The format of the game was further changed in 2008, as the amount of points needed to win a game decreased from 30 to 25. In reflection of this change, category leaders under the new scoring format are separated in order to not eliminate the achievements of those student-athletes who played with the previous format.

Note on 25-point rally scoring format: Record-holders under both the 30-point rally scoring format and the 25-point rally scoring format are grouped together, though players under the 30-point format had a greater opportunity to accumulate statistics. This reflects the NCAA Record book. Note on blocking statistics: Information on blocking are not included in the official NCAA official records, since there appeared to be a significant variance in the methods by which blocking statistics were kept during the 1980s. In CSU-Pueblo’s statistics, the breaking point for this variance seems to be 1992. As a result, blocking statistics in the CSU-Pueblo record book are included in two sections: 1992-2000 and 2001 to the present. Pre-1992 blocking statistics are also listed as is.
