IF YOU THINK THESE TWO MINUTES ARE SPECTACULAR

GIVE US A GO FOR 48 HOURS

It can be a mind-blowing experience. And while our Derby is one heck-of-a-race…we’re pretty bullish on our city too. We’ve kind of become a bit of a buzz. The sophistication bourbon brings to the table has the national press clamoring up to the bar and singing our praises, and the culinary world can’t stop coming back for seconds (and thirds) as they ladle the accolades onto a cuisine scene exploding with flavor. Throw in an unbelievably rich arts tradition, top-notch attractions uniquely our own, and a city that pretty much always wears a smile and your group has got the makings for a truly remarkable experience. In a truly remarkable city…where there happens to be a truly remarkable horse race. Enjoy.

Suggestions on what to pack Although Louisville experiences four distinct seasons, summer tends to come early, fall lasts longer, and the relatively short winters bring more rain than snow. March is usually the wettest month, October the driest. Whatever season finds you visiting the city, the trip will be made better by packing the right things to wear. • Spring can have warm days but cool nights can linger. To stay warm, long sleeve shirts or light sweaters are suggested. An umbrella, raincoat and light jacket may also come in handy. • Summer can be very hot and humid. Bright, light clothing is a must. • Fall, like spring, can have fluctuating temperatures between day and night, so pack sweaters or light jackets. • Layering is the key to the winter months. Long sleeves, sweaters, medium to heavy coats, hat and gloves should be included if traveling to the city in winter. Any time of the year, there are some things that will make your stay even better. Don’t forget to bring a comfortable pair of shoes for visiting Louisville’s many attractions. To protect your skin, bring sunscreen rated SPF15 or higher. Just as you would do when traveling anywhere, if you have allergies bring along the appropriate medications. This is especially important if traveling to the area in spring or fall when allergy irritants can be especially high.

Named for King Louie XVI of France in appreciation for his assistance during the Revolutionary War, Louisville was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1778. While its initial growth was slow, the advent of the steamboat in the early 1800s sparked booming industrial development, and by 1830 Louisville had secured its place as the largest city in Kentucky.

YEAH, WE’VE GOT AN UNBELIEVABLY LEGENDARY HORSE RACE, BUT DID YOU ALSO KNOW...?

LOUISVILLE FACTOIDS For over 140 years, the world has turned to Churchill Downs the first Saturday in May for the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing, the Kentucky Derby. Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron and Johnny Bench are just a few of the baseball legends who have used the Hillerich & Bradsby Company’s Louisville Slugger. The Belle of Louisville, at over 100 years old, is the oldest operating Mississippi-style stern wheeler steamboat in existence today. Louisville’s Historic Main Street has the nation’s second largest collection of cast-iron storefront facades. Only New York City has more. Two kindergarten teachers from Louisville wrote the song “Good Morning to You” which later became the traditional birthday anthem, “Happy Birthday to You.”

Oscar AwardWinning Jennifer Lawrence

A showcase of industry, and forerunner of World’s Fairs, the Great Southern Exposition ran four years in Louisville, 1883-1887. Old Louisville is home to the largest collection of Victorian Mansions in the United States.

The Pegasus Parade and the Kentucky Derby Festival

Each spring, Louisville hosts the world’s largest civic celebration the Kentucky Derby Festival. More than 70 events are planned during the fourteen days preceding the Kentucky Derby, including “Thunder Over Louisville” the nation’s largest annual fireworks extravaganza. Louisville is the location for the busiest canal in the world. More tonnage passes through the McAlpine Locks and Dam System on the Ohio River than the Panama Canal and Suez Canal combined. Louisville is the world’s center for Braille printing. The American Printing House for the Blind is the oldest national non-profit agency for the visually impaired in the U.S., and the nation’s largest publisher of literary aids for the blind. Known as the “city of parks,” Metro Louisville has 122 parks, covering approximately 12,500 acres. Louisville International Airport is the third busiest air cargo facility in North America and the seventh busiest in the world. The population of the Metro Louisville area is approximately 1.3 million. Southern Living magazine has named Louisville as one of the top ten tastiest cities in the South.

Burgoo, especially popular in Louisville during Derby season, is a thick stew made with beef, chicken, venison and plenty of vegetables (usually anything you can find). The Hot Brown originated at the Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville, which was a popular gathering place during the 1920s. The open-faced turkey and bacon sandwich is topped with a rich cheese sauce. Imagine gracious Southern Belles at an afternoon tea in the summer. What would they serve in Louisville? Tiny sandwiches of Benedictine, a spread made of cream cheese, chopped cucumber and a touch of green food coloring. Jennie Benedict, a proprietor of a popular Louisville tearoom, was the first to serve it. The Mint Julep is revived as Louisville’s cocktail of choice each year as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. It’s a powerful concoction of sugar, water, crushed ice, bourbon and mint.

Modjeska, a candy treat, originated in Louisville by candy maker Anton Busath. This specially made marshmallow dipped in liquid caramel was named in honor of famed Polish actress Helena Modjeska after Busath saw her perform a play in Louisville. The Old Fashioned cocktail is another part of Louisville’s lore. It is said that a bartender, in a sudden burst of inspiration, tossed a few dashes of bitters into a glass of whiskey. Later, a dash of sugar and bit of lemon peel were added. The Old Fashioned has been named the Official Cocktail of Louisville. Derby Pie®, a concoction of walnuts, chocolate chips, sugar and a few other special ingredients, is so popular it is registered by trademark. When you order “whiskey” in Louisville you usually get bourbon, one of the region’s home products. 95% of all bourbon is made in Kentucky. Louisville has been named as one of the “best foodie getaways in the world” by Zagat.

561 Blankenbaker Ln. Louisville, KY 40207 502-897-9845 www.locustgrove.org

The Conrad/Caldwell House is an extraordinary example of Victorian Romanesque Revival architecture. The beautifully carved stone exterior is matched on the interior by extraordinary wood carvings and woodwork. The house exemplifies the ambitions of the rising business class during and after Civil War reconstruction and the lifestyle of many Louisville entrepreneurs at the turn of the century.

Locust Grove, circa 1790, and a National Historic Landmark, tells the story of owners William and Lucy Clark Croghan and her brother Revolutionary War hero General George Rogers Clark who resided at

Thomas Edison House 729 East Washington St. Louisville, KY 40202 502-585-5247 www.historichomes.org

The Thomas Edison Museum House is located in the Butchertown National Historic District. Just after the Civil War, Thomas Edison rented a single room in this simple cottage during part of the one and one-half years he worked in Louisville as a telegrapher for Western Union. Built in the 1850’s, the structure is one of few remaining shotgun duplexes in the area. On exhibit are many of Edison’s early inventions, along with period artifacts from the Butchertown neighborhood. Farmington Historic House Museum 3033 Bardstown Rd. Louisville, KY 40205 502-452-9920 www.historichomes.org

Farmington was constructed in 1815, with the home’s design taken from plans by Thomas Jefferson. No house in Kentucky more embodies Federal architecture than Farmington. Farmington’s most famous visitor was Abraham Lincoln who spent six weeks with Joshua Speed during a temporary break in his relationship with Mary Todd.

LOUISVILLE’S HISTORICAL HOMES

IT’S WHERE HISTORY HANGS ITS HAT. Louisville is rich in history, and celebrates it by preserving the beauty of its historic homes. Inventors, presidents, war heroes, explorers and slaves are part of the fabric that make-up the fascinating stories of these homes that were the sites of Kentucky life. Much more than brick and mortar, these places are invitations to experience the daily lives of the people who called these houses “their homes.”

Locust Grove with his sister and her family during the last years of his life. Their youngest brother William Clark and exploring partner Meriwether Lewis were entertained at Locust Grove upon returning from their expedition to the Pacific. Other important visitors to Locust Grove include U.S. Presidents Monroe, Jackson and Taylor.

Riverside, The FarnsleyMoremen Landing 7410 Moorman Rd. Louisville, KY 40272 502-935-6809 www.riverside-landing.org

Standing atop a gentle rise overlooking the Ohio River, the FarnsleyMoremen House is the centerpiece of a 300-acre historic site in Louisville, called Riverside, the FarnsleyMoremen Landing. Built circa 1837, the house stands as a testament to the important role agriculture, along the river, played in the development of our country. Two upper middle class farm families, the Farnsleys and, later, the Moremens, brought the Riverside property to life by cultivating the fields and trading on the river. Today, visitors to Riverside may tour the historic house and grounds to get a glimpse into what life was like on this beautiful 19th century Ohio River farm. Whitehall: Louisville’s Estate Garden 3110 Lexington Rd. Louisville, KY 40206 502-897-2944 www.historicwhitehall.org

Whitehall, thought to have been built circa 1855, began as a modest twostory brick house in the Italianate style popular during the mid-19th century. Through the years, and various owners, the house has been renovated and expanded into its present day grandeur. Upon the death of the last owner, the house, gardens and many of the unique furnishings were bequeathed to the Historic Homes Foundation of Louisville to be shared with the public. Whitehall was extensively refurbished in 1994. The gardens of Whitehall are the centerpiece of the home and make it a popular place for outdoor weddings. There are four separate gardens – an arboretum, the Woodlawn Fern Garden, a Formal Florentine Gardena a Specimen Garden.

The Abbey of Gethsemani Bourbon Heritage Center Located at Heaven Hill Distillery, this state-of-the-art center provides visitors with the ultimate educational and entertainment experience in the making and the history of what was designated “America’s Native Spirit” by Congress. Old Talbott Tavern Talbott Tavern is said to be the oldest western stagecoach stop in America as the westward expansion brought explorers from the east into Kentucky. According to legend, figures straight from the history books sought lodging here during their travels. Abraham Lincoln and his family stayed here, as did General George Rogers Clark and Daniel Boone. There are noticeable bullet holes in the now faded paintings and Jesse James is said to be responsible for them. The Abbey of Gethsemani Founded in 1848, the Abbey of Gethsemani is the largest and oldest Order of Cistercian Monks in the U.S. The Trappist Monastery was home to Thomas Merton and is known today for its delicious fruitcakes and cheeses.

AROUND LEXINGTON (approximately one hour east of Louisville) Kentucky Horse Park A working horse farm with 1,200 acres surrounded by 30 miles of white plank fencing, the Kentucky Horse Park is like none other in the world. Dedicated to man’s relationship with the horse, the park features two outstanding museums, twin theaters and nearly 50 different breeds of horses. Old Friends Beginning in 2000, Old Friends became a retirement and rescue facility for pensioned Thoroughbreds. After the news broke in 2002 of the inconceivable death of Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand in a Japanese slaughterhouse, Old Friends became the place where at risk racehorses – those whose racing and breeding careers have come to an end – came to live out their days in a dignified retirement in a manner they deserve. By promoting these one-time celebrated horses through a campaign of education and tourism, attention can be drawn to all retired Thoroughbreds and all equines in need. Tours are hosted daily.

West Point Located just minutes from Fort Knox, West Point is one of Kentucky’s oldest cities and is rich with Civil War history. It is here you can visit Fort Duffield, an earthen fort built by Union soldiers in 1861. The Bridges to the Past is a one-mile walk, along the old L & N Turnpike, that includes three pre-Civil War stone bridges. Knob Creek Gun Range Knob Creek Gun Range is Kentucky’s premier outdoor shooting range. It is a family-owned business with three generations of the founding family working there. The Range offers a safe place for target shooting, educational classes and firearm education. Gun safety is practiced at all times in the shop and on the range. Range officers are on the firing line to keep a safe shooting environment for young and old alike.

KENTUCKY BOURBON DISTILLERIES

RUGGEDLY SMOOTH. INTENSELY MELLOW. THIS IS BOURBON COUNTRY.

Today, Kentucky produces 95% of the world’s supply of bourbon at over a dozen distilleries. Many are open for public tours. Each one practices the art, science and magic of making bourbon, yet with its own distinct traditions and heritage.

Buffalo Trace Distillery sits on an ancient buffalo crossing that became a pathway for westward-moving explorers, pioneers and settlers. Buffalo Trace is the oldest continuously operated distillery in the country. It was one of only four distilleries allowed to produce alcohol – for medicinal purposes – during Prohibition.

KENTUCKY IS THE BIRTHPLACE OF BOURBON

Alltech Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. offers the unique distinction of being both a brewery and distillery. It also is the first distillery built in Lexington in over one hundred years. Its barrel aged beers incorporate the unique attributes of Kentucky bourbon and provide a distinct flavor profile. Town Branch, a Kentucky straight bourbon, is the distillery’s hallmark bourbon product. The name “Town Branch” commemorates the body of water that presently runs under Lexington, on which Lexington was founded. The distillery house produces four spirits – Town Branch Bourbon, Pearse Lyons Reserve (a single malt whiskey), Town Branch Rye Whiskey and Bluegrass Showdown (a bourbon-infused coffee drink).

Jim Beam’s American Outpost gives a thorough view of the distilling process and the Beam family’s more than 200-year history as distillers. Jim Beam is the world’s most popular-selling bourbon.

Barton 1792 Distillery

One of the best-kept secrets in Kentucky, Barton 1792 Distillery, home of 1792 Ridgemont Reserve, is located just one mile from the center of Bardstown. Founded by Tom Moore in 1879, the whiskey was of such high quality that he gave it his own name. Tom Moore Bourbon is still produced, along with Very Old Barton, Kentucky Tavern, Kentucky Gentleman, Ten High and 1792 Ridgemont Reserve. In fact, the spring used by Tom Moore still flows today and is in every batch produced. 1792 Ridgemont Reserve is an eight-year-old, uniquely crafted small batch bourbon with a complex taste that’s rich, well-balanced and promises to raise the bar of bourbon. It is named for the year the Commonwealth of Kentucky entered the Union as the 15th state.

URBAN BOURBON

THE URBAN BOURBON TRAIL

WHERE CITY MEETS (BOURBON) COUNTRY. Here in Louisville, we’ve embraced bourbon, our state’s signature spirit, as a key ingredient in what makes our city so unique and attractive. We appreciate it so much, in fact, we’ve created the Urban Bourbon Trail – a spirits experience comprised of restaurants and bars that know and appreciate bourbon. When your group is traveling along the Urban Bourbon Trail, they’re in for cocktails both classic and modern, live music and the bourbon-inspired creativity of the city’s best bartenders and chefs. Each stop is well stocked with anywhere from 50 to 150 varieties of Kentucky’s signature spirit.

URBAN BOURBON

URBAN BOURBON TRAIL An authentic Kentucky experience should include some bourbon, so why not treat your group to a meal infused with bourbon in its food, cocktails and tastings along the city’s Urban Bourbon Trail. The city’s bourbon heritage dates back to 1774 and continues to evolve to this day. One of the most exciting evolutions is the growth of restaurants celebrating bourbon in their cuisine, cocktails, décor and on the bar shelf. Many of the stops along the Urban Bourbon Trail exude a sense of history and connection to bourbon, while others put their own modern twist on America’s only native spirit.
