Nails Do You Fake It? by Aynsleigh Hollywood
Pattern
When
deciding on your wedding look it is easy to forget your nails. You pick you dress, you do your hair and you shop for your shoes. But what is it the ring goes on? Your finger of course. So many people will be wanting to see the ring so you are going to want lovely nails to go with it. But the question is, do you use fake nails?
If you want to be a bit more outlandish then a pattern would be a sure fire way to draw people’s attention. This also gives you a great deal more choice than you would have if you just wanted to go for a simple colour. You could have little gems or beads or swirls that match your henna tattoos. You could even ask for little pictures if you want your wedding to have a bit of a quirky feel to it. For this it is better to go for fake nails. They may be more expensive and getting them done may add one more thing to your already busy pre-wedding list but they are more likely to last past the wedding night if you get decent ones and you can make the designs to fit both your wedding and your unique personality.
Colour
Go French
That is the first thing you are going to have to think about. If you just want a nice simple look then there is no need to go fake. You don’t even have to splurge on the manicure. Just get one of your friends to do them the night before. The most important thing you have to remember is that they match your dress. They don’t have to be the same colour. For instance, if your dress is red then gold nails would be stunning. It’s a good way to not only save a bit of cash but also to get the ladies of the wedding party in on the action. All the prep work that needs to be done the night before doesn’t have to be nightmare. You can turn it into a fun send off between you and your friends.
This is best if you are going for a more muted, elegance with your outfit. Don’t sell modest fashion short even in something as extravagant as wedding fashion. The old saying, ‘less is more’ may be a cliché but it is true. If you are going for white, silver or more muted colours then it is a great idea to ‘go French’. You can chose between going fake and having your own nails with this one. Once again, you just have to weigh the benefits, the style you are going for and your budget. So what you chose all depends on you. Choosing your nails is like choosing anything else in your wedding. It has got to be all about you and what you want to look like on the day. The most important thing is that it all reflects you.

MARIA KHAN Award Winning Artist Bio:
Maria Khan is a 25 year old Asian, Muslim, Henna artist who has established a henna and make-up bridal service based in Glasgow. Q: Describe Henna in your own words. Well for me, it’s an art and like any art it is a form of expression. It is also another way of beautifying yourself in the Asian culture. So for me it is a perfect example of the artistic merits of the beauty industry. Henna is floral art and is culturally connected to Eastern women but in this contemporary world it is like, a feminine alternative to tattoos. That’s what Henna means to me. There is so much you can do with it but I like to stick to the cultural core of it. Also in terms of the beauty element of it, I think it completes a bride. Q: When did you first start Henna? I first started Henna when I was fifteen. I was interested in henna from a very young age, even in primary school. I was always naturally good at art and I did art competitions in primary school which I did really well in. What made me start henna was, when I use to get my henna done as a young girl they use to show me a picture and I would say, “This is what I want,” but the henna never came out the way I wanted. Because I was good at art I knew that this work could be done better. So it made me look into it and start experimenting on my own. So I’d say, they quality of the henna I use to get done was a big factor in me exploring the art form on my own.
embroider beautiful Asian weddings gowns. But then I found my calling in henna which is a big part of Asian weddings. So, I always knew I wanted to work in the wedding industry and once my work in henna had taken off I decided to explore another aspect of the beauty industry in connection to weddings and that was hair and make-up. Hair and make-up have always been interesting and eye catching to me. Even though I wasn’t a master to begin with, I could appreciate it as an art form and I always kept a close eye on it. The reason I decided to branch out into make-up other than any other aspect of the Asian wedding industry was because there is a high requirement for it. My customers were always asking me about it so their encouragement made me think about the next logical step in terms of both my business and my art. Q: What influences your designs? When I was a little girl I use to look at magazines and in some of the magazines I read were the designs of Ash Kumar who was a big influence on me. He is a very well-known artist and a Guinness World Record holder and he was a contemporary henna artist in the UK. His stuff was very eye catching when I first started. It reminded me of tattoos only in henna form. It wasn’t like traditional henna, it was all glitz and glam and very contemporary.
Q: What is the best reaction you have had to your work? The best reactions I get are from brides and their families. If they have an idea of what they want it to look like and I can produce something that is even better, then I get some wonderful reactions. It also feels really good when family members ask me if I use a stencil to get such an intricate result and I can say to them, “No, it’s all freehand,” and they are really surprised and impressed, that is a great reaction too. Positive reactions are always a real motivator. Q: What lead you to branch out into hair and make-up? When I was a young girl I worked in an Asian bridal shop. So I related a lot of myself to what I saw in that shop. I first thought I was going to be a fashion designer and I would 20
This influenced me a lot because when I was a young girl just doing this as a hobby and most of the other henna artists I knew were much older and had their own ideas of what it should be and their work was always very traditional. So for me it was the realisation that thanks to more contemporary henna there is room for experimentation and that gave me the chance to experiment. This led me to
This influenced me a lot because when I was a young girl just doing this as a hobby and most of the other henna artists I knew were much older and had their own ideas of what it should be and their work was always very traditional. So for me it was the realisation that thanks to more contemporary henna there is room for experimentation and that gave me the chance to experiment. This led me to merging a lot of different concepts into one to create my own style. I was very interested in floral patterns so I picked up influences from Indian flowers, Arabian flowers, Sudani flowers and Pakistani flowers. When I was first getting into henna I was told that these were all separate themes but I myself and some people I did henna for weren’t satisfied with those designs and that motivated me to try out more designs that I liked. This resulted in my own signature look. Going back to your reactions question, it is also very gratifying that my work is so easily recognised due to how unique it is.
Q: Describe a typical day for you. I make arrangements with my brides and schedule consultations with them. During those consultations I discuss with them the concept art and hear the ideas they have about their henna designs and what they want to bring to the table. This means I can personalise my service for them and test for colours and allergies as well as test the designs on them to make sure they get what they want. When the day comes for the design to be applied I go to their house or they come to my premises and we just work with what we have planned and I am left with a very happy bride. Also lately, since turning this hobby of mine into a business I have been brushing up on my customer service skills in order to provide the best experience for my clients because I am providing a service not just the art. Also, since branching out into make-up and hair I have been spending a bit more time on that, again experimenting and brushing up on my skills. What I pride myself on is quality over quantity. I want to provide the best service I can for my clients on such an important day for them. I do, do group bookings but that all depends on time. I will always prioritise the brides and I will always put quality over quantity. Q: What is the next step for you in business?
Q: Tell us a little about the awards you have won for your work. I have won two awards for henna. The first award I won when I was twenty-one, ‘Scotland’s Best Henna Artist’ at the Scottish Asian Beauty Awards. I had been doing henna for six years at this point and you had to submit a portfolio of your work and one of the judges in that competition was Ash Kumar. I loved looking at his work when I was younger and he was a celebrity artist who had done henna for Madonna. He was the one who introduced the contemporary look of henna to the west. So having him looking at my work, it was like a dream come true. More recently beyond my expectation this year in March , I have now won first place for henna artist at the UK wide ‘Fashion and Beauty Awards 2016’, this has been a great honour to be recognised on a bigger scale out with my own country , making our Scots proud. The greatest reward for me is my clients personalised feedback that encourages me to work harder because these titles are great to have but if you are not making people happy at the end of the day then your work is worthless. I have also won the title of best newcomer of 2015 at the ‘Scottish Asian Fashion Awards’. This has set a standard for me to always deliver the best. And I’am Very pleased to say, this year on the 2nd October, I won Best Henna Artist 2016 in Scotland at the Scottish Asian Fashion Awards (SAFA) . I am humble to receive my 3rd Award for my Henna work. Along with my 2nd award for Best Newcomer Asian Make up Artist 2016, at the same event.
The next step for me is hair and make-up. I want to sharpen my skills in this area. So far I have had a fantastic response from people in the community and from my clients. I have a great amount of trust with my clients and they are very impressed with the work I put up online so even though it has only been about two years since I started this, it has been received very well. Once again I would say that the quality of my work is so important to me and many people know about the quality of my henna art so I want to keep experimenting and practicing my make-up so that my clients receive the same quality in both disciplines. One thing I am looking to do is provide the full package for my brides, henna, hair and make-up, so as well as branching out into make-up I am also providing bridal hair-dos and sharpening my skills in this area.

Bridesmaids Who compliment
The Bride By Sultana Malik
With all these trends and themes consistently changing every season, how are you meant to fit the bridal party into these looks? A traditional bride will always go with reds and deep colour pallets but for a trendier and contemporary bride, how are you meant to match the bridesmairds? Here is a helper’s guide; > Red - Cream, whites and antique gold > Purple - Blush, lilacs and White/Ivory > Deep Blue - White, pastel blue, greys > Pastel - match with bridal embroidery or even the event theme > White/Ivory - the world is your oyster ( Pastels, deep colour pallets) > Floral - Whites/Creams, dusky pink, pastel shades that compliment the bridal outfit 34

FOOD TASTING An essential guide to ensuring great tasting food at your wedding by Aynsleigh Hollywood One of the highlights of your wedding day is the meal. It is one of the things your guests will always talk about afterwards. Plus, like everything else about your day you want it to reflect you as a couple. So that is why it is best to have a tasting session first. Much like getting your hair and make-up done you want to make sure it is perfect on the day so you always have a trial.
Here’s what to do: • Talk with each other about the theme of you menu and jot down all of your favourite foods. • Cross off foods your partner doesn’t like until you are left with choices that will please both of you. • Look up local caterers that provide this sort of food and read their reviews (remember: don’t take these reviews at face value). •
Call up the ones that look the most promising and talk to them about the wedding packages they provide and decide which ones are the best for you (remember: there is generally room for negotiation).
•
Once you have your perfect caterer you can start talking about the menu and organise tasting sessions.
This will ensure that you get a meal you enjoy and everyone at your wedding will be talking about for a while after.
