DEAR GRADUATES AND FRIENDS, In some ways, you could say that this year was the calm before the storm. As we prepare to launch an ambitious, comprehensive campaign for the future of Goucher in March 2018, it’s hard for us to take our eyes off the future. Nevertheless, this year was by no means calm. In fact, it was historic and record-breaking. Support from you and other generous donors has allowed the college to make significant strides toward becoming the national model for a modern and developmental liberal arts education. This means we have doubled down on the liberal arts with a new curriculum that focuses on the core skills of writing, data, and complex problem solving that we know employers need while keeping a high bar for academic success; we produced a record number of Fulbright scholars this year and attracted one of the largest and brightest entering classes in our history. This means we were once again named Innovator of the Year, thanks mostly to the bold decision to move all three Froelicher buildings across campus. This move not only garnered national praise but also made room to complete the First-Year Village, a learning-living community that is one of the first residence halls in the country specifically designed for student success using behavioral science. This means leading the nation in equitable pay. This is the right thing to do, and our faculty and staff work on the frontlines every day for our students, creating an educational experience that allows them to thrive. This means giving our athletic teams the facilities that match their talent. For example, the tennis team, which won their second consecutive Landmark championship, will soon be serving up aces in the Evelyn Dyke Schroedl ’62 Tennis Center. In short, it means a lot—more than one letter can cover. We are on the forefront of progress. And we know we cannot do any of it without you. Everything that makes Goucher great—every accolade and award we have achieved over the past year—is only possible because of the support from our entire community. Gifts from alumnae/i, faculty, staff, students, and friends not only sustain Goucher but propel it forward. And it’s not just financial support. The time and talent you give to our institution, whether mentoring our students or serving on committees, is just as vital. I want to thank everyone who made a gift in the 2016-17 fiscal year. We say it often, but that does not make it any less true: Your support has a direct impact. Just look at all we accomplished this past year and the difference it made in our community. Reflecting on that success, I am even more excited about the future and partnering with you for another record-breaking year. With sincere gratitude,

José Antonio Bowen, President

DEAR FELLOW GRADUATES AND FRIENDS, With everything we have accomplished this past year, it is hard not to be #goucherproud. It is hard not to be inspired by our alma mater’s commitment to the value of a liberal arts curriculum and determination to make higher education more accessible. The very fact that we are growing our class size while other liberal arts colleges are shrinking or adding revenue-generating, professional programs proves that Gophers are a different breed—standing up for our values in the face of adversity. But, most of all, it is hard not to be inspired by the incredible support of our entire community. Everything that makes us proud of our alma mater is made possible by your generous support. Together, we are building the vibrant community that will drive Goucher’s future success. Your impact is felt all over campus. As you know, our priority areas for the Greater Goucher Fund touch everything: academics, financial aid and scholarships, faculty and staff support, student life, sustainability and facilities, and social responsibility. We are also grateful for those who have spent countless hours sharing your time and talent with our students and hosting events for the college. Your direct involvement strengthens our community and is an essential part of our success. On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, we thank you. You continue to inspire us with your generosity and support; Goucher would not be what it is today without this community. We look forward to continuing this great work in the new year as we launch a bold campaign for the future of our college. Sincerely,

Kimara Ahnert ’91 Goucher Society Co-chair

PAYING IT FORWARD DANIEL MCQUIRTER ’99 When Daniel McQuirter ’99 started to think about where he wanted to go to college, his grandmother, Perlena Dock, was hesitant. She had raised McQuirter and his siblings, and he was the last to leave the house. And now he wanted to leave Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and go all the way to Baltimore? But McQuirter’s mentor, a family friend named Richard Kalich, explained the value of the education McQuirter would get. Kalich had been the one to find Goucher in a guide to colleges. After that, “her whole perception changed,” McQuirter says, “and she was happy.” McQuirter found a new home at Goucher, one completely different from where he grew up. “I was pretty much out of my comfort zone,” he says. “But I was around individuals who had a common goal, who wanted to learn more about me, and my culture, and I was eager to learn about them…I left Goucher with a sense that I’d had an opportunity to learn more about life, more about what I would encounter in the real world.” He learned how important it was to be open-minded, to put aside biases and listen to what others say. This has helped him excel in his career; McQuirter currently works as a business systems analyst for the Las Vegas Valley Water District, where he works with and trains people from all different backgrounds.

10

“I was around individuals who had a common goal, who wanted to learn more about me, and my culture, and I was eager to learn about them” McQuirter’s grandmother was always there for him throughout his years at Goucher. She only had a sixth grade education, but taught McQuirter that he could make it with hard work and perseverance. Whenever she could, she sent $50 or $100 to the grandson who made her so proud. Dock was that kind of person. She had a huge garden and gave away food to anyone who needed it. “She always taught me it was the right thing to do,” he says. Dock’s generosity has inspired McQuirter to give back himself. He has committed to giving $3,000 per year for the next five years to support a scholarship student at Goucher each year. “She taught me about helping people in need, and I’m hoping that my gift to Goucher will help someone,” he explains. “Because I needed help.”

“The reason I became a professor was to interact with my students. To mentor them, to talk with them, to listen to them, not just to teach mathematics.” — Rachel Grotheer, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Faculty in Residence Alycia Johnston ’15

THE PARENT CONNECTION NAN DAVIS P‘18 In working to revitalize Goucher’s Parent Council, Nan Davis P ’18 says she and her husband, Rich, who is on the board of trustees, had an idea in mind. While the councils at most colleges are composed of folks who open their wallets the widest, Davis, as the first chair of the newly reorganized council, didn’t think that fit Goucher’s progressive mindset. She wanted it to be open to all.

“What we hope for many parents is that, even from a distance, they can feel they are part of the Goucher community by becoming a parent volunteer.” “We wanted parents to experience the same feeling of belonging to an inclusive and welcoming community that our kids experience on campus.” Davis cites a story she heard from her daughter as an example: A freshman posted on Facebook that she was having a hard time. “I need to hug a dog,” she wrote. “I need some ice cream.” A reply came from Kimberly Bowen, wife of President José Bowen—come to the president’s house. They had dogs and ice cream. To foster that kind of community for parents, Davis and a number of staffers at Goucher’s Office of Advancement put together an organization that aims to offer parents the kind of support she saw students receive from the college. “Our Parent Council Ambassadors reach out to new families, welcoming them and answering their questions. They host ‘Sendoffs’ for incoming students and their families, where members of the administration are there to answer parents’ questions and where both students and parents can meet and begin to know one another. And,

16

recognizing that parents lead busy lives and might need help remembering college deadlines, the Parent Council sends out timely reminders about things like tuition payments, housing deposits, and insurance waivers.” Aside from giving support to parents, the Parent Council also aims to support the goals of the college itself. “One of the priorities of the Parent Council is to partner with Goucher’s Career Development Office to help our students as they explore career options,” Davis says. Parent volunteers have participated in webinars about various career fields and have agreed to mentor students by being available to answer questions, inviting students to visit their workplaces and coming to the campus to talk about their own work experiences. All of this can be done no matter where a parent lives. “What we hope for many parents is that, even from a distance, they can feel they are part of the Goucher community by becoming a parent volunteer,” she says. “How great to know that by participating in a webinar you can be of help to students at Goucher even if you’re in Los Angeles.” Of course the hope is that this feeling of connection to the college through the Parent Council will also translate into financial support for Goucher. “In my own experience,” Davis says, “the organizations where I spend my time, that I put my energy into— that really grab my heart in some way—are the ones that I financially support. And I think this is true of many people.” Davis says she and her husband didn’t anticipate, when their daughter was looking for a college, that they would find one themselves. “Goucher has been a tremendous experience—not only for Annie, but for us, as well.”

2016-17 ANNUAL REPORT

23

FINANCIAL RESULTS FOR FY2016-17 The audited financial results for June 30, 2017, reflect the ongoing growth and revitalization of the college’s campus. This year the college opened Pagliaro Selz Hall and continues with its plan of completing a first-year village, which involved moving an existing residential complex to make way for two new residential buildings. Revenues increased $1.7 million, to $73.7 million, driven by our community’s contributions to this innovative capital improvement plan. Contribution revenue increased $1.8 million, to $9.3 million. In addition, the opening of Pagliaro Selz Hall led to additional room and board revenues. The college’s endowment grew in fiscal year 2017, ending the year at $206.5 million and generating operational support of $12.1 million. Current giving and endowment support from prior gifts comprise more than 27 percent of total revenues. This growth allowed the college to continue its strategic initiative to make a college education more affordable for our students by increasing the student aid available by $2.6 million. For the first time in the college’s history, President Bowen announced that Goucher will not raise tuition for the upcoming school year (2017-18). The initiative builds on Goucher’s long tradition as a leader in liberal arts innovation and in advocacy for access and equity in education. Overall, expenses rose a percent, driven by investments in personnel aimed at growing enrollments and campaign giving over the years to come. Goucher ended the year with a $2.4 million surplus—a $1.1 million improvement from the prior year.

FINDING THE RIGHT PLACE ELANA COHEN ’08 Before Elana Cohen ’08 had even walked across the stage at graduation, she was already giving back to Goucher. In fact, she has supported her alma mater each year for the past decade. A determined and deliberate person, Cohen, now an executive assistant to the director at a Jewish nonprofit in Cleveland, did exhaustive research during her college search. “I wasn’t going to rush into anything until I felt ready in every way,” she says. Growing up in the Cleveland area, she knew she wanted to find a four-year college on the East Coast. She decided to knock out some core requirements at a local community college while looking for the right fit. Cohen knew what her perfect college would have. “I was looking for a small liberal arts school that was academically rigorous but also supportive,” she says. It would have a welcoming Jewish community, as well. And it just had to feel right. Then a family friend recommended Goucher. She was familiar with the college from the book Colleges That Change Lives and decided to see it during her tour of East Coast schools. “Goucher just seemed like the best fit for me, and I loved Baltimore,” she says. It felt right, and she knew she was ready.

It can be hard for transfer students at any school to find their place. Cohen credits Goucher Hillel with making her feel at home. “It was a warm, welcoming environment,” she says. “I always knew there would be a friendly face there.” Cohen is now serving her second term on the board of directors for Goucher Hillel. “I really wanted to give back and stay involved, and be as engaged as I could so, hopefully, people in the future would have a similar experience.” Cohen has financially supported Goucher Hillel and given to the library, the Art and Art History Programs, and the Book Studies Program. The art programs, speakers, and events are some of her fondest memories of college. “We were able to walk out our doorstep and go hear world-renowned speakers and see amazing performances. Goucher makes it really easy for students to participate in cultural events and meet people from all over the world.” She continues,

“As corny as it sounds, the book Colleges That Change Lives—it really did. It was the hardest thing I ever did, having taken that leap and going there. I put my faith in it, and I was able to excel and soar.”
