Kelly Walker: Stratachrome
“ It is not the form that dictates the color, but the color that brings out the form.” — Hans Hofmann

Similar to a geologist who studies layers of sedimentary rock and soil, Kelly Walker has spent years studying the layering of both traditional and nontraditional mediums. Sometimes these bands of different colored or differently structured materials are exposed horizontally in strata like compositions, each material’s unique character distinguishing it from the neighboring layers. Other times, materials are carefully laid down layer upon layer, one upon the other, overlapping and obscuring each layer below. In all cases, Walker’s process mimics that of natural geological forces: there is a slow and steady buildup of both color and texture, visually marking the passage of time. Walker’s mastery of materials allows her to seduce viewers, pulling them in closer through her aesthetically appealing use of pattern, surface, and chroma. Goucher College will present Kelly Walker: Stratachrome in the Rosenberg Gallery at Kraushaar Auditorium from June 20 through September 2, 2012. This exhibit, which is free and open to the public, can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An artist’s reception will be held Thursday, August 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Rosenberg Gallery. I paint because I can’t stop moving. My process is an organic transfer of energy, imagination, and emotion. My studio is the only space I feel free from judgement and free to explore the materials I work with. Combining components that should not mix—oils, acrylics, resins, lacquers, metal leaf, car paints, plasters—I paint and repaint
surfaces, building up textures, layers, and a complexity of colors that reflect the many emotions and energies I’ve absorbed from day to day. Drawing from a mixture of my surroundings, experiences, travels, and feelings, my work is more a reflection of my process of exploration rather than the achievement of an end result.
