MAPPING MOBILITY PATTERNS The smartphone has changed our everyday lives radically, offering unprecedented possibilities and now becoming part of the fabric of society. In Western Europe, the penetration degree of mobile phones approaches 100%, with smartphones accounting for more than 85%. When they are out and about, people use their state-of-the-art phones to connect to a transmitter tower hundreds of times a day. These location details can be used to identify anonymous trip patterns, which presents great opportunities for the mobility survey and transport modelling market.

MOBILITY PATTERNS: FROM MOBILE PHONE DATA DAT.Mobility and Mezuro have joined forces and developed a National Origin-Destination Matrix based on mobile phone data. The matrix opens up new opportunities to everyone working in the mobility and related sectors, from traffic and transport consultants, policymakers, logistic companies, and road construction companies, to marketers and event organisers. The National Origin-Destination Matrix provides a huge quantity of information in and of itself. However, we took it a step further and projected this data on to the road and railway networks. This resulted in information about the numbers of vehicles and passengers, including their origins and destinations, for each individual road and railway section in the Netherlands.
